Farewell Message- Straight Darren says "I Love You" to Gay David on Big Brother...
This was really touching, to see such a bond between a straight guy & gay guy. When Darren's message was played & David started crying when he said he loved him (as a friend of course), it bought a tear to my eye too. Straight guys can really bond & connect with gays, & it's great to see that shown on tv where there are normally stereotypically depicated as being like oil & water.

Fashion on Big Brother
Has anyone else noticed that David often wears a t-shirt with "good mates" written on it? I think this is a t-shirt from an ACON campaign a few years back. How's that for publicity!

Something about the timing of this doesn't fit right with me, but it just may be my cynical side showing.
He "parts ways" with his record company the week before, which is industry speak for getting dumped. Then suddenly come out and has this whole new audience ready to embrace him and his new album (which also got announced as coming out whenever, I forgot). Yes he may be gay and he's married now and I wish them all the best, but it does feel a bit too staged for my tastes.

Gay Sex on Desperate Housewives getting more intense
The gay sex on this show is getting really raunchy- first Bree's son is kissing & sleeping with his "buddy" after playing computer games in bed, ..... now he's seduced her adult friend & A.A. "coach" (himself a reforming alcholic & bisexual sex addict). Although only kissing has been show so far & the bed scenes, it's still been pretty intense. I was a bit shocked though to see her son seduce her adult friend....no wonder she then kicked him out of the house!

I can't imagine anyone rushing to get civilised (joined in a civil union) after something as majorly stressful as being dumped from a record contract.
My guess is that it was the other way around. That the record contract forbade him from announcing his sexuality, so he had to get out of the contract before he could come out. Darren, I hope you have a long and happy union.

That may be the case but it wouldn't be the first time a fading celebrity got married for publicity.
When Eltons career started to tank in the 80's he played the marriage card. The only difference here is now his mass appeal had waned, Mr Hayes now has the unsuspecting gay community lining up to support his career. Gay for pay is one term that comes to mind.

Gay Romance on marathon Big Brother Sunday broadcast
To see David sit there & say in the diary room footage that he would like nothing more to go back to living on his farm, with a husband, then to be evicted & reunited with his boyfriend Sherif was a fantastic sight. The way they hugged & kissed & cuddled while the nation stood still to watch was a blast.

David might not have won the game, but he absolutely stole the show. Seeing him and Sharif reunited on stage was fanfuckingtastic. - Sun 30 Jul 2006 22:02:29 Replies: add Au contraire. Seeing the guy go the pash with a bloke he met THREE WEEKS before he went in the house and declaring how much he loved him only confirmed how tacky and contrived the whole exercise is. The bloke exploted himself, then his parents by having the most personal and intimate conversation imaginable with them ON NATIONAL TV without preparing them for it - unforgivable to my way of thinking - then his most recent bonk (i cant bring myself to call an acquaintance of 3 weeks a boyfriend or partner) strips down to his jocks for a gay rag so he can get his share of the action, then they parade themselves on the box last night as if they were celebrating their silver wedding anniversary after being kept apart for years by the Berlin Wall. And this is all sposed to be a good advertisement for the gay community? One thing I suspect it might confirm for the wider world is that if given marriage rights, we'd be frocking up and marching down the aisle every couple of months with whoever it is we last picked up at the Shift. It don't get any more crass and tacky and cheap than this. But I guess if you take as your starting point, as so many do these days, that it's all about fame, attention and money, then they have succeeded admirably in their goals. Leaves me just feeling in need of a good scrub.

I think David and sherif contrasted nicely to the little sooks that were jamie and katie who both "chucked a huge wobbly" (to use david's ockerism) when they both came up for eviction.
"but i'm going to lose jamie!!!!" shrieked Katie. "what if he runs off with some other girl whilst i'm still in the house!!" meanwhile David had someone waiting for him the whole time he was in the house! He managed to survive the supposed nightmare Jamie and katie were getting so worked up about. I thought Ten's attempts to deal with the issue of coming out were admirable (if alittle naive ie. Gretal asking David why it's such a big deal to come out. David's answer "because we run the risk of getting bashed" - like it wasn't obvious gretel). I also note that the camera angle changed quite quickly and awkwardly every time David and Sherif went to a lip lock. But hey, they still managed to make a gay man a fully fleshed out person, with hopes and fears. I'm sure more than a couple of young gay boys took courage from what they saw of him. And perhaps even a few fence sitters were convinced to take the side of decency and understanding and not homophobia. I really wished David had won, but then his final interview and reunion with Sherif wouldn't of taken centre stage the same way it did last night if this all happened after he was announced as the winner. And as someone said further up this wall, he may not have won, but he really did make a difference.

Yes I don't deny it would have made a difference to some and in that sense cant be derided completely. But really - you have to wonder about the motivation. Devoid of class, self-respect or respect for his family... and as for the "boyfriend" who unbeknowns to his imprisoned "boyfriend" got his gear off for a gay magazine to make his own quid from the shabby exercise.... enough said. All driven by money. Big Brother contestants, by definition, are self-selected show ponies from that segment of society that craves attention, fame and cash as their reason for being. 99% of the population would not go near the thing, and with good reason. Dignity, for one. And let's not get carried away by the gay farmer thing - the guy used to be a fashion model.
I think it's time for a new name for the generation that is enchanted by it all and who are so dumbed down that they find this nonsense uplifting and rewarding: forget generation x and y. Taking into account the pursuit of celebrity and money and the endgame of being famous for no other reason than that they have appeared on television without ever actually achieving anything, perhaps its time to christen them Generation Paris.

David went onto the show to specifically highlight the issues & discrimination faced by gays. He's on Rove Live tonight & said he's be back on the farm on Friday. The younger generation are very demanding & they demand respect & above all they demand equal rights & equal choice. To be honest they make some in the older generation look like whimps. (albeit thick skinned, cranky old whimps, who were happy to settle for second class citizenship by not looking beyond decriminalisation & segregation).

You've obviously never been in love now have you.... Sure David is naive in saying that he and Sherif will be together forever etc etc - but isn't it nice that he's actually showing love and affection to another man? and that so many heterosexual people are following it and more importatnly applauding! have a visit to the news.com.au website and have a read of their Big Blogger section where people write their thoughts about the show. YOu'll see that whilst there is still homophobia in this country, there is a slow change happening and lots of people are on our side! they've been following the show and very much enjoyed watching David be reunited with his bf - even if he is only a boyfriend of 3 weeks - hey didn't katie and Jamie get "married" after only knowing each other for only three weeks? what's the difference in the situation apart from the fact that David and Sherif weren't stuck in a house together and just hooked up with the person who happened to be sharing a bed together. Give David a break. he's only 26. and i think he's done a good of a job as could've been done.

GMA with Bert HAS to be TV's worst program of all time.
- Tue 1 Aug 2006 21:19:25 Hey if you thought GMA was bad, I wonder if you're old enough to remember Good Morning Sydney with Maureen Duval and Andrew Harwood? Now THAT was bad TV! Maureen was a sweet biddy, but so scatty she'd often forget they taped all five half-hour shows for the week on a Monday, and she'd say: "Good morning Sydney, and isn't it a beautiful day?" And the 20 or so people tuned in on Wednesday would look out the window at the pissing rain and wonder what drugs they were giving her at the studio.... and Maureen used to be the host as well as doing the Moira-type stuff, which would often go wrong. Like the time some woman was showing Maureen a battery-operated contraption to make instant coffee froth like capuccino (I kid you not), except the thing went haywire when she put it in the mug and saturated both of them. Oh, classic stuff.

That would be right. The beautiful gay couple in The Bill have been 'killed' off, one literally after going to a gay bar where a serial killer lurks and the other who recently rejected him after getting into a crystal situation after shooting someone in the line of duty.
Once again, gays are only allowed on TV so long as their ending is tragic. When are we going to be represented fairly - or maybe we are being?

Well, have The Bill redeemed themselves? The gay copper killed by a 'pretend' gay man working as a barman in a gay pub. Better make sure you sleep with the barman guys just to make sure he isn't a 'straight' serial gay killer. Watch out though, if he is, you may not live to to gossip about it at the Oxford next weekend. Still appears like gay tragedy to me - another waste of a once quality programme of more than 2 decades trying, and unfortunately failing badly, to deal with gay and openly honest lives.

"note to big brother bimbo Katie - try calling your boyfriend before you tell everyone he has dumped you". apparently Jamie has been too busy to call her, he still loves her and didn't know what she was "banging on about" (daily terrors words, not mine). seems that some heteros think that not seeing your partner for 3 weeks (plus the other weeks they were separated by the voting public) isn't an issue. not even a call. Not even an sms for your loved one. but you can tell a gossip rag it's all over. man i wish i was a hetero. meanwhile David and Sherif have been living an ordinary life together doing the sight seeing tours of sydney (Centrepoint Tower skywalk) and being snapped for some gay papers in the social section. i know which r'ship i'm betting on to last longer....

Gay storyline on Home & Away
There was a gay storyline on H&A this week. A new character came out but i'm sure he'll very quickly disappear from the show. However I read this interview on the H&A website , http://seven.com.au/homeandaway/feat_general_060911_deanssecret and I must say that I am quite shocked at how someone in our community (what is a "queer/pop expert" anyway???)has had the hide to stick up for the producers when they write this character out. The specific quote i have a problem with is: “That’s probably pretty realistic for a kid in a country town,” explains Roozi Araghi, queer/ pop culture expert...... .....As we all know, Home and Away isn’t a show bursting at the summery, sandy seams with gay characters. As Roozi points out, “It can be quite difficult to integrate gay or lesbian characters into a show like Home and Away on an ongoing basis because [the show] revolves around the romantic relationships of the characters, and so if there’s a pretty limited number of people they can date, it makes it difficult to create ongoing storylines. ” shouldn't he have been saying something like: *introduce more gay characters so you don't have to write the only ones out *characters can be in more than just "romantic" storylines *realise that having a diverse range of characters is good for all the viewers and thus make efforts to intergrate characters from all walks of life. ?????? I'm shocked that someon from our community could have such a "blame the victim" mentality. "oh the H&A stories are all romantic (like the summer bay stalker??) so you can't have a gay boy hanging around (why not?)".

I did say all of those things too. Ever heard of being selectively quoted?
That said, be real about what Home and Away is... it is very significantly about romantic relationships. I guess they *could* make half the show's characters gay, but having a vaguely realistic depiction of the struggles that are faced by gay people in places like Summer Bay is a good start. Realistically, how many young gay guys would actually stick around a place like Summer Bay? Do you want a celibate guy who hangs around being friends with everyone and eventually gets turned straight again, or do you want to have it shown to people that prejudice is sending young queers flocking to the cities?

There are plenty of storylines on most soaps that have nothing to do with romantic relationships. kidnappings and other crimes, fires in schools, natural disasters etc. There is no need to make "half the shows characters" gay. there are plenty of almost asexual characters on these kinds of shows anyway.

people who work in media should know about selective quoting in this age of sound bites and need to modify their what they say to take that into account so you don't wind up looking like you are supporting something stupid or homophobic. people get media training about this all the time.

OK, saw Priscilla today and it was fan-bloody-tastic.Everyone should go and see it, really world class. Tony Sheldon was brilliant, but looks like his mum Toni Lamond pretty much ALL THE TIME, which is very off-putting. When the wig comes off he looks like a cross between Lamond and his aunt Helen Reddy. Great singing, great energy, brilliant sound, lighting, costumes etc etc. The only song that seemed out of place was Colour My World. I'm giving it 5 stars.

Is anyone else watching this? I used to LOVE this show when i was a kid. I still remember watching the very first episode when it first aired and I had the biggest crush on John Palmer (Peter Phelps) even as an eight year old.But now i'm feeling like abit of a pervert perving on someone who (in the repeats) is 10 years younger than me!

Can anyone answer this question?
If you're at a venue and a TV crew shoot segments at that venue with you clearly in their shots, do they have to ask permission from you to be filmed? Recently Queer TV visited a venue where my friends and I were and filmed various people without asking permission from anyone. I would have thought it was at least common curtesy to ask, if not a legal requirement. Unfortunately I have to say we were all underwhelmed by the blatant rudeness of the Queer TV crew on the night and some guys who are not out were pissed off to have their privacy violtated in this manner.

How embarrassed was I to have friends see me at his concert ![]() I gave that concert 1000 out 10 though. I think it has to do with if you are out in public then no permission needed. Look at interviews in Pitt St mall and all those people in the background etc. Impossible to ask them all if OK.

I agree with you. Having said that, Queer TV is hardly Today Tonight. Somebody you know who is unaware you're gay would have to: 1. watch Queer Tv when they screened that segment (most probably with no advance promo's that it'd be on), 2. pay attention to those in the background, and 3. recognise you. I'd say the odds are 1 in 872,591.

Photographers in clubs have to ask permission from the patrons to snap them, why aren't TV crews subject to the same rules? At the very least it would be basic curtesy and good PR for the show involved.

I think there's a difference between "basic curtesy" and the law. If you are doing something in public and don't have a problem with people seeing it, then you should have a problem with people recording it (despite what NSW law says about filming topless women on the beach).
Besides, with mobile phone picture and video technology a tv crew is the least of your worries if you are somewhere you don't want to be identified at. Alleged rude tv crews can be tracked down and complaints made (as talked about above) - but a bitchy enemy can easily send photos of you in a gay bar to your boss, family, etc . and then you have no recourse even if you knew who it was that did it.

Stars Come Out!!
It must be the Brokeback effect - coming out seems to be the thing to do these days. Following in the footsteps of Darren Hayes and Lance Bass two well known American TV stars have come out in recent weeks. The first to come out was T.R. Knight who plays George on Greys Anatomy and the second is Neal Patrick Harris who appars in "How I Met Your Mother" but is probably best known for starring in "Doogie Howser MD". See the article at http://www.eonline.com/news/article/index.jsp?uuid=b38b6ba8-a8b1-43db-ad84-03fba25474db As a teenager knowing Doogie was gay wouldve made my life complete...sigh!

Rest in Peace Belinda Emmett
It's extremely sad news to learn today of the death of Belinda Emmett. Although it is always sad when someone dies, when still so young it seems so unfinished and completely unjust. I heard her say once that when she would hear people complaining about getting old, or dreading growing older that she would think to herself 'I think that'd be really nice actually.' It's very sad that this want has not been fulfilled for her.

Holding The Man
Stephen Dunne (a hard man to please!) gave a great review in the SMH:http://www.smh.com.au/news/arts-reviews/holding-the-man/2006/10/26/1161749228028.html "Tommy Murphy's adaptation of Tim Conigrave's memoir is an act of urgent remembrance, an unflinching, devastating, moving and funny reanimation of that awful time. It is also the story of two people in love." It concludes: "There's a famous slogan from that time: "knowledge equals power". It still does, but knowledge isn't just safer sex and treatment regimens. It's also knowing how the past helps prevent recurrence. "Murphy, Berthold and the cast's tribute to Caleo and Conigrave is compelling, wrenching and essential. I laughed, and I wept. History's like that." Couldn't have said it better myself. The original post was made ages ago so maybe this wont be read by the original poster but for what its worth I work in television and can tell you that we always need legal permission to film anyone. That includes the public, talent and extras -basically anyone that can be distinguished on screen. Out of focus or unidentifiable people in the background are fine because they can't be identified. Some doco makers have successfully argued that if a person is knowingly being filmed, such as an interview subject, then the act itself proves consent. This is not always a successful argument and so most filmmakers make sure they get signed release forms. Also, this "consent through action" argument would not hold for your situation. I suggest if you are concerned write to Queer TV and tell them they do not have your legal permission to use your image.

Re: Tanlines
Yes, I think it's pretty much universal that the movie wasn't up to scratch.I liked the characters and the actors were quite endearing, but they were let down by a meandering script and very poor production. If only they'd lit the set properly and focused the storyline alittle, it would've been a much more enjoyable film. The fact that it was filmed on video and not actual film shouldn't of been a problem if they had dealt with the lighting and sound properly. there have been been plenty of good films produced on video. I too was disappointed with the film. My friend even walked out halfway through he was so bored (granted he wasn't really interested in the film in the first place and I dragged him to it).

Re: Tanlines
Disclaimer:I was awaiting the release of this movie for ever, for I am Midget, well not really Midget, but grew up a gay surfer in a small coastal town, so in true cliched terms this movie was going to speak to me from start to finish. Maybe I had hyped this movie in my head way too much. One last thing, I never shared a bed with mother tho! I agree this movie had so much potential, and could have said and done so much more. While there were some great moments here they were far outweighed by the bad production, the one dimensional acting and plot flaws so insurmountable as to de rail the whole movie, ie a whole town knowing about the sexual relationship between a male teacher and a male student. Not only is he still allowed to teach but in the same small community where it happened just totally inplausible. If the department hadnt removed him surely the good townsfolk would have ran him out of town with pitch forks and torches ablazing. Having said that this sordid detail evoked thoughts of what Larry Clarke mighht have done with this movie, and somehow I get the feeling that Ed was looking to Clark for some inspiration in places, (why else include the cunninglingus narrative and scenes into thsi movie? Although I have some ideas about this and the lengths Midget would go to escape his home) Now that I have mentioned Larry Clark, who i think is a genius, i wish Clark would have a go at this script and do the film the script deserves, that is make a gritty gay teen movie, no not pseudo kiddy porn, but woven in this bizzare teenage experiences and encounters, removed some of the obvious inplausibnility, inserted some freaky shit, let the actors be who they were without sticking to a script. Some great moments (the party scene, the orgy of bowling, the beat scenes (and for their plot twists, nothing more) but some really bad directing and production. Im gonna sit back, go home and visit the folks for Xmas in the same small coastal town where i grew up, go to the beach where I always surfed and stare at my favourite break, and think how I can reach Larry Clark and tell him about his next movie.

Re: Re: Tanlines
It's a shame that a movie like this comes off so badly. We all know that the "entertainment industry" runs on sex, and that the casting couch is far from Hetero, but it would be quite difficult to assemble a cast of competent talent in Australia for this type of movie. Most people reading the script who had some control over their own careers would walk away because it's "not cool". One of the best ways to get a good performance out of a "bad" actor, is to shoot during a rehearsal without telling anyone--then you do the "real" shoot, and often the rehearsal is better in editing. Having not yet seen the movie, I don't know if it was shot on film or tape. Tape is cheap and allows a hundred takes to get it right. Film is not as forgiving. As far as the gigantic holes in the plot are concerned, what you have highlighted is clearly ludicrous, because the teacher wouldn't have just been chased out of town, but the education department would have chased him out of the state. Unless this was a one-shot to get some attention, it's quite likely that the intent of the film will be revisited in a more sound future project.

Re: Re: Tanlines
It wasn't the acting that let the movie down. it was the production values. it's as if they didn't even know how to do a manual focus and just left the camera on autofocus the whole time.

"what you have highlighted is clearly ludicrous, because the teacher wouldn't have just been chased out of town, but the education department would have chased him out of the state."Lordy, lordy me. What a sheltered and naive life some must lead! It was only last year that the Western Australian Crime and Corruption Commission investigated the WA Education Department's handling of teachers accused of sexual misconduct with students, where the Department would just move the accused teachers to different positions after 'counselling' them. It ultimately lead to the Department Head having to publicly resign, and the Education Minister, who used the 'nobody told me' defence in the Commission hearings, was eventually demoted. And let's not even go near the inequity of where male teachers can get sentenced to 10 years imprisonment, whilst female teachers can get 'punished' by the courts with as little as a 2 year good behaviour bond.

I agree, teacher/student relationships are more common than people suspect. and not just when the student is in high school, but in other situations as well ie. uni student/lecturer, coach/athlete, mentor/apprentice etc. I think that this is one of the situations where both of the parties seem to get quite abit out of the relationship at the begining which doesn't always pan out because the relationship is too often stuck in the original teacher/student role.

My Queer Career
Went to this event last Thursday night. It was a lavish affair and very well done. Angel Place Recital Hall is by far the best venue ever for this event.Best films: Look Sharp - beautifully directed and acted. Fantastic script. This film really respects the audience with it's intelligence and maturity. Prada Handbag - gorgeous production design, costumes, great energy. A funny, sad, unique and beautiful film. Seeya Rach - great acting, simple idea executed well. Hilarious, black ending. Filled With Water - wonderful animation with beautiful pace and tone. The Manual - professional and well-crafted. Fantastic acting from not only the big names actors, but also the young children. Australian Tails - a crowd-pleasing effort. Best running by a lesbian I've ever seen. Least successful films: Mizu - lacked emotion and clarity. Indulgent and frankly boring. My Malaysian Trip - boring and nothing new. Terrible narration. Salt - tryhard and not funny enough. Most overrated: In The Ladies Lounge - started off well but outstayed it's welcome during the dancing sequences. Went downhill quickly with bad editing and repetitiveness. Conceptually, this film is good, but the execution is really heavy-handed and show's the director's lack of experience. It's good to finally see more lesbian films in the finals, but surely Prada Handbag deserved an award from the judges? It received the audience award, so was regarded as the most entertaining by the public. I felt that Prada Handbag perhaps deserved the Queer Portrayal award more then In The Ladies Lounge. And "Seeya Rach" certainly deserved an award or at least an honourable commendation. Sarah Spillane certainly deserved her Emerging Talent Award with 2 very accomplished films stretching from comedy to serious drama, and I look forward to seeing more of her work in the future. Look Sharp was fantastic and I can't wait to see more of Amy Gebhardt's films. I wish her all the best in October with the Iris Prize and hope she wins it!

I have to disagree about the venue. The hard surfaces and no carpeting on the floor made it abit to echoy for my tastes. But everything else I pretty much agree with. Went to the Celluloid Sallon session on Saturday afternoon and they showed the films that were runners up in the My Queer Career competition (ie. films entered into the comp but didn't make it into the top 8 films).
There were some real gems in there. I particularly liked "A Bear in There" (i think that was it's title). its was an interesting animation which might've been abit too abstract for most people but i thought was really sweet. I'm glad they put it on the DVD, I've watched it twice since Saturday - I like the imagery and the music - it's a nice way to start the day. There were some quite bizarre films too in the mix. Which kind of gave me the "I can do that too" kind of feeling - films that were so abstract I didn't get anything except boredom and confusion from. But the most interesting thing about that session was an explanation from someone from Queerscreen about how films make it into the main competition. What they do is have the judges view all the films and give them scores on certain criteria. The films are then ranked on those scores and whatever makes it into the first 90 minutes of those rankings gets included into the main competition. This seems like a very logical way to program a festival competition, but has some interesting effects. It's been noted that some films could've been much shorter, so potentially a quality 3 minute film that just missed out on being accepted into the main competition could've missed out - and instead we got 5 extra minutes of an over-indulgent film. It's an interesting thought. I know Tropfest has a 7 minute limit on their short films. I'm wondering if My Queer Career has a similar restriction. Does anyone know what the definition of a "short film" is? is a 30 minute film short? or does it have to be under 12 minutes? Sometimes though 12 minutes can seem like forever in a bad film and 15 minutes can seem so quick in a good film!

Anthony Callea in Same Sex Relationship
"Eye in the Sky reporter Vic Lorusso seemingly outed the singer after mentioning meeting Callea while discussing an old school mate on The Edge's brekkie show. Why is it that heteros can have thier partners mentioned with little fanfare, but when same sex couples/partners are mentioned it's classed as "coming out"?
I think there is a difference between saying "hey look at me I'm a single gay man"- maybe that is coming out, but to say "my partner Mark", or "my partner he's wonderful" etc are not classed as coming out, but rather just doing exactly what straights do- just talking about it like it's no big deal.

Re: Re: QueerTV
Well, I would always watch Queer TV when Aurora were airing it last year simply (and only) because it was gay. It wasn't very entertaining, the hosting was pretty darn bad (sorry guys but it really was), the editing was even worse and I feel they had a slight obsession with Master/Slave... oh and not to mention the awful Frocks film-clip for the theme song. I do hate to be negative and I'm certainly no professional (I just watch shit loads of tv) but I feel they needed to work on some things. I do wish them all the best of luck with the new show though, on channel 31. Hope they just get better and better. ![]() PS Thought the last 10 minutes of the show they filmed at Sleaze last year was hilarious! Matt and Pandora were so badly slurring their words and fucking things up... peaking off chops! Classic.

Big Brother 2007
The papers are saying today that this year, the Uncut show will not be screening, due to "a changed climate".My guess, is not just a post-Family First Political Climate. In addition to Australia having a changed Political Climate, it also has a changed Social Climate. Post Cronulla Riots & Revenge Attacks, we are all too highly sensitive, compared to the carefree days in the year 2000 when the first BB was lauched with Uncut being one of the most popular segments & no complaints whatsoever. Even compared to the early 90's when the Channel 9 Sex program was on.... that show wouldn't see the light of day now in 2007.

Re: Big Brother 2007
Meanwhile on Home & Away the hetero partner swapping and incestous relationships continue! There have been plenty of boys and girls getting together even though their parents are together - surely there's a taboo against dating your step-sister or brother? This has happened not once but numerous times - even amongst foster siblings!! (certainly a no-no in real life DOCS). Just last week there was a wedding - it seemed pretty simple, one man one woman getting married - but geez did it through up a heap of questions about incest. The woman had a child with her husband's to be brother. So the kid was going to have his uncle be his step-dad. The step-dad had a son of his own. That son at one point was in a sexual relationship with the woman he was marrying - so the son was doing it with his step-mom to be. So both father and son had the same woman in their beds. To make matters worse, the woman had another daughter from a different relationship. That daughter also went out with the son. Her now step-brother. Their r'ship seems to be on-again off-again - so the next time it's on again it definitely will be a taboo. So the poor little kid now has his uncle be his step-father. His cousin also be his step-brother and his sister going out with his step-brother! And all in a 7 O'CLOCK timeslot!! Not one person seems to mind it all happening (they must be distracted by the pole dancing storyline). PS. haven't really watched Big Brother Uncut because I really haven't wanted to perve on any of the guys (and that's the whole point of the show).

"I have to disagree i dont care if im called poof etc
I am not that thin skinned." It's not about being think skinned. It's about the attitude that is encouraged by allowing that kind of language to persist. People refrain from making racist remarks these days because of "political correctness" thus people understand that racism in any form is bad. By allowing homophobic comments to be aired they are encouraging an attitude that says we as homosexuals shouldn't be afforded the same respect as other people. Whether you are thin or thick skinned the attitude of those around you will have an impact on your life.

is it acceptable because they are gay? just like two african-americans calling each other nigger is ok but if a white person says it ,it is racist? Surely hetrosexuals can take offence to being called straights or breaders under the same standards and surely "gay" mardi gras should be changed too Take a look at the term wog years ago it was offensive yet look through gaydar etc and see how many profiles wear it with pride. Calling us by other names will not change attitudes towards us. So you are fine with people referring to you as a "fag", "fudge packer", "pillow biter", "poofter", "shirt lifter" instead of "gay" or "homosexual"? you are happy with those other words to describe you on television? Especially considering that that kind of language on tv is going to influence the way that many young people view you (and the rest of us). This attitude that they have will manifest itself into actual behaviours which may not affect you as an adult if you are living in a gay ghetto, but it certainly would affect young gay people in schools, and it certainly affects gay people who get bashed because others think it's ok to bash fudge packers.
Look at the contraversy in the USA at the moment with a white shock jock referring to black women as "ho". Now they are even saying that if rappers show such disrespect to black women then why is it such a big deal when a white shock jock uses the same terms? PS. as for "wog" - I'm sure lots of people took offense to it when the Cronulla bogans chanted it as a derogatory term in December 2005 despite the advances made in race relations.

aids ridden i do as it shows a prejudicial attitude all gay people have aids thus the person is ignorant. Fag on its own only indicates sexual preference.
Their is a diference between the way the names are called if someone says "oh your such a fag" or "that is so gay" it is a lighthearted comment but being called "an aids ridden fag" shows a hatred and,If it is said with violence or intimmidation it is not acceptable as it is not in any situation. Words themselves are not the issue, if you respect others you can converse with the foresaid words.ie how often have you been out and someones said "hey fred how are you you ol c#nt" its meant as a term of indearment and not derogatory.

Actually, for better or worse, I believe the law has been modified so truth *is* now a defence, rather than true and in the public interest.
It is a defence to the publication of defamatory matter if the defendant proves that …the matter [is] substantially true. — Defamation Act, 2005, NSW, Section 25 http://www.abc.net.au/mediawatch/transcripts/s1613045.htm Also, I think there is a precedent thanks to Rene Rivkin's unsuccessful action against Ch7 that it is no longer defamatory to say a person is homosexual, unless it also implied they were dishonest, hypocritical or abusing power. http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2006/07/21/1153166587297.html?from=top5

Anthony Callea at the Logies
Can anyone tell me who Anthony Callea's date was at the Logies.I didn't watch it at all this year (yawn), but saw clips the next day & that Anthony was there. So, for those who watched the marathon telecast, did you see who his date for the evening was? i.e. did he bring his same sex lover Paul?

what he actually said was "I feel like I've had sex with a black man". Meaning he felt totally, completely and thoroughly rooted (or f**ked to put it less mildly. THAT was the comment that was considered racist because he implied that black men were aggressive and predatory.
And by the way, I don't think he's cute - just annoying and WAAAAY over exposed.

No.... because they are "all well hung" & that is what makes you really rooted. The well hung reference is the racist part. (or racist compliment?) I think it's more tacky, crude & very rude/explicit, rather than racist.

New gay play mate for Bodie in BB
We finally have a gay boy in the 2007 BB house. His name is Nick and Bodie seems very happy with his new best friend.Late last night in the Sauna Bodie told Nick and Zoran that the guy in Prisonbreak is HOT and that he likes looking at HOT guys. He also kept telling Nick and Zoran that he was straight. Things that make you go H'mmm!

The King - Foxtel TV1 - 20 May 2007
Who watched this programme last night ?To be honest I thought it was pretty dull and the fact the movie only covered kennedy's life from childhood to the Blankety Blanks era was disappointing as Kennedy did so much more work after Blankety Blanks More importantly it was very interesting seeing how the overwhelming current of the programme covered Kennedy's battle with his homosexuality. Funny how Derren Hinch upon Kennedys death was lambasted by the media for "outing" him after his death yet this programme is likely to be heralded as a good programme. Derren Hinch must feel some large amount of vindication this morning.

I didn't watch on principal. Mr Kennedy was very private when he was alive and I don't feel his privacy should have been violated simply because he passed on.
I could not care less if he was gay bi or straight. The man was an entertainer the likes of which we won't see again. He chose to live his life the way he wanted and some respect should have been shown for his choices..

"He chose to live his life the way he wanted and some respect should have been shown for his choices."
And does that include respecting his choice regarding the the appalling manner in which for months (maybe years) the programme has reported he used to sneak a boyfriend of his from the studio to his home and back to the studio again the next day in the BOOT of his car because he was too "private" (lets say embarrassed) to be seen driving in his car with another man. This is exactly what happened according to this true recollection of his life in the programme. If it is true then I have no sympathy whatsoever him. What a shameful thing to do to another human being. This overrides any respect for Kennedys so called "privacy" in my opinion.

what year did all this happen ? 2007 ? hardly. In those days it was frowned upon/scandalous so it was his choice. NOT yours and perfectly fine you have no respect. But........... put it into perspective and you will find that gay bars where pretty much undercover stuff as well or bribed the hell out of the authoriteis to leave them alone. Times change, but dont crap on comparing the past with the current standards.

"This is exactly what happened according to this true recollection of his life in the programme"
Perhaps you should learn to assess various 'accounts' of his life before swallowing and regurgitating this diatribe as a "true recollection of his life"? Kennedy's long-time friends and neighbours, actress Noeline Brown and her TV writer husband Tony Sattler, are bitterly disappointed with the portrayal of the man regarded as Australia's king of comedy. "I thought it was very bleak and it was a portrait of somebody not very like the Graham Kennedy I knew for many years," Brown said. Sattler, who knew Kennedy for almost 40 years and was a director of his company until the comedian's death, said the telemovie was not a fair representation of his friend. "The bitter and twisted figure portrayed by Stephen Curry is not the Graham Kennedy that I knew," he said. One scene shows Kennedy convincing a young man to travel in the boot of his car to avoid being seen, thus raising questions about the nature of their relationship. "At the time everybody suspected he was gay but nobody gave a shit about it, nobody cared and back in those days nobody even talked about it," Sattler said. "So what's the point of hanging a plot on that? That ludicrous thing about making the bloke climb into the boot of the car - that never happened. "Graham did tell me he made a guy sit in the back seat with a rug over him but he never made him get into the boot." Sattler also objected to scenes in which Kennedy was driving a Rolls-Royce, when he always had a Mercedes-Benz, and drinking Scotch when in fact he preferred gin. "There are so many inaccuracies that would have been very easy to check," he said. http://www.smh.com.au/text/articles/2007/05/19/1179497339366.html

I made comment about "The King" previously.
As I won't pay for ads, I don't have any form of pay TV in the house so therefore can't watch the movie, and probably won't when it's available to me anyway. I'm left wondering if The King was intensely reclusive because of his homosexuality, or perhaps in spite of it? I can think of many other people who don't go living their lives in tabloid magazines and only come out when they have something "professinal" to do, and I strongly doubt that they are all reclusive purely because their sexuality may not be accepted by the public.

I watched the making of it & the re-run of the movie last night. And yes, in light of this movie being made, it makes it look like overkill the attacks that were made on Derryn Hinch... although I think the attacks were probably warranted in light of Derryn doing what he did so soon after the death & before the funeral had even taken place- he was a bit too quick off the mark & so his timing was very tacky & inappropriate.
As far as what I thought about the movie, they wanted to make it in the same style as Walk The Line, and in that respect I think it worked really well. As Walk The Line also had an other worldly detached (almost boring) feeling to it as well, but also gripping at the same time. The only jarring thing was that with that detached style, any of the on air humour scenes of Graham's career also left you feeling detached, which is not the true spirit of Graham- they did not capture his infectious humour- they only displayed it, from a detached perspective. This then left you feeling detached & uneasy for the entire length of the movie with no let up, so this was a weakness in the storytelling, as it was too monotonous, with no ebb & flow of emotion for the viewer- you just felt sad the whole time, which is not good- some of the saddest movies also make you laugh in parts, which then makes the sad parts even more powerful. This was just sad & detached the whole way through. As far as his homosexuality, think back- he was born in 1934, and grew into an adult in the 50's before the word gay was even invented. The word homosexuality was only used to describe criminal acts & mental illness. There were no words & hence his cone of silence that, once cocooned around him, was never broken, even after so-called gay liberation. I watched the show with someone who themselves has only come out of the closet now aged 47 & he was very moved by the movie, seeing himself in the trapped web of self denial. I wonder if Alan Jones watched it- as he too is living under his own cone of silence, oblivious to books about him that even spell it all out. I'ts denial in the highest degree, but that denial & stifling of thier own personal life then makes them brilliant in their work, as that is where all thier energy goes into. Overall, I really enjoyed the show as it finally revealed the true story of one of our best gay icons who was mincing around before the word gay was even invented, but who was trapped by the overwhelming feeling of 1950's society's complete rejection & criminalistation of homosexuality, in an era when even flouncing Liberace lied under oath to deny he was homosexual. Once you set up that lie, under the media spotlight, it's almost impossible to deconstruct- you only self destruct. Things have changed now in 2007, but only just... we've seen an unbalanced Darren Hayes, denying he was gay, we've seen Anthony Callea deny he was gay. But for these two, there was healing & Darren has now got married in the U.K. to his same sex partner, & Anthony has faced up to the rumours & finally revealed he has been in a same sex relationship for two years. So if it's still that hard in 2007, the imagine what it was like for Graham.

"... in light of this movie being made, it makes it look like overkill the attacks that were made on Derryn Hinch... "
The "attacks" on Hinch were based on Hinch claiming that Kennedy had died of an AIDS related illness -- claims which, despite categorical medical evidence to the contrary, Hinch has steadfastly refused to retract. Overall, I really enjoyed the show as it finally revealed the true story of one of our best gay icons ... True Story? It is, at best, a dramatisation of some aspects of his life. It's certainly neither a biography nor a true story. It's been reported that twelve "friends and associates" aided the production team, including John Michael Howson and Pete Smith. Three words come to mind: 'stones', 'glass-houses' and 'karma'.

On a related matter, I wonder how CH10 will handle the overt gay subject matter in Torchwood which starts this monday? In case anyone isn't aware, Torchwood is a spin-off from Doctor Who but don't let that put you off. You don't need too much knowledge of Doctor Who to enjoy Torchwood. John Barrowman is still cute as Captain Jack, although I liked him better all those years ago in Central Park West.

Torchwood, starts 9:30pm Monday June 18th, with hunky gay lead actor/character
With a gay writer, a gay actor playing the lead (a bi- character), then this is heaven. Only downside is it clashes with the gay character on Brothers & Sisters on channel 7 in the same time slot. The bes thing though is that the lead actor, studly John Barrowman, recently got "gay-married" to his partner of 16years, wearing a kilt for the ceremony. I love this quote.... "Our relationship was legitimate for us a long time ago. We have been spending most of our time together. The ceremony is because we have the right to be recognised as a couple. It forces people who don't want to recognise same-sex relationships as legitimate, it forces them to do so.” http://www.techstickle.co.uk/2006/12/31/gay-torchwood-actor-john-barrowman-gets-married/

Dr Who started out as a Kids' show, and any perceived sexual tension between the Doctor and his assistants, was purely up to the audience. The Doctor's interest was always 'parental'. John Barrowman was turned down for the role of Will in "Will & Grace" because he's "not gay enough".
John of course is gay in real life, and recently married his same sex partner of 16 years in a civil marriage in the U.K. Eric McCormack who won the part of Will (as he was "gay enough") is actually straight in real life. Go figure!!! When is the general public going to realise that many gay guys are actually 100% masculine-acting? She wasn't "outed" - merely reported on. Treated exactly the same as any other person in the spotlight when it came to her lovelife. If it's OK to talk about Britney Spears' marriage woes - then why is it not ok to talk about a gay person's? By all accounts Deborah Hutton was open in her everyday life about her relationship with the hockey player. she was treated EQUALLY - like any heterosexual person in the spotlight. she wasn't outed to defame her - or to even say she was a bad, sinful person. merely that xyz had happened.

Jauntbelt? That's seriously 70s. My disappointment is that they routed K9 out of the storylines. It doesn't make sense to go to all that trouble to resurrect the character and then just "timeslip" it out of the story. Surely she couldn't take it everywhere she went, and couldn't always go home, so "K9 to the rescue" would never have been an ongoing problem.I also encountered evidence that as a result, K9 is getting his own spin off (again), but this time it's a digital mockup that bears as much resemblence to the original as a Big Mac has to a hamburger.

*** SPOILER ALERT ***
In Episode 9 of Skins (SBS Mondays 10 pm): There has been tension between best mates Maxii and Anwar over Anwar's refusal to tell his parents that Maxii is gay. When Anwar's Dad discovers Maxii and Anwar outside the venue of Anwar's 17th birthday party, he asks why Maxii won't come inside. Anwar and Maxii tell Anwar's Dad, a devout Muslim, that Maxii is gay. Anwar's Dad replies: It's a fucking stupid messed-up world. I've got my god. He speaks to me every day. Some things I just can't work out, so I leave them be. Okay? Even if I think they're wrong. Because I know one day he'll make me understand. I've got that trust. It's called belief. I'm a lucky man. He then invites Maxii into Anwar's birthday party.

Have you seen this woman on youtube? she's an absolute nut. Just a tip, if you ever have the misfortune of having a conversation with this woman, don't forget to bring up the topic of her illegitimate children.
Personally I really hope they protest Heath's funeral, because i think that they'd get promptly removed and the police will look the other way on this one.

The first I ever heard of "GodHatesFags" was an accidental discovery on gootube of some way over the top guy singing a song called "God Hates Fags" with Deborah Harry (my Goddess--yes I'm a punk poof) backing him. I've never thought of Deb as a gay icon, but have been well aware that she has supported individual rights in the past. And she did admit to Dame Edna that she had played "Nurses and Nurses".

I read a report that Mel Gibson also disapproved of Heath Ledger's choice to play a gay man in Brokeback Mountain and that apparently broke Heath's heart.
Just another reason to dislike that racist homophobic alcoholic!

Denyer does it again - Foot in mouth disease #323503483 for him
This morning Grant Denyer, macho racing car driver, was dared to busk as a mime on Melbourne streets in full face make up. Then when he moved into "Naked Cowboy" mode dressed in only a guitar and undershorts (plus previous face make up) he made the intelligent comment "Geez, this isn't a good weekend to be wearing a costume like this - I'm glad I'm not in Sydney". So Grant, macho racing car driver, thinks that he might be mistaken for a gay man simply because he's in costume. Further he's glad he's not in Sydney because we might mistake him for a gay man and things might happen. Being the predators that we are and all. What a stupid man, and a stupid stupid comment made on national television (not in his racing car drivers locker room). This from the man who once commented "I feel like I've had sex with a black man". How does he know what it feels like to have sex with a black man? Poor little boy. Short man syndrome strikes again!

Hey, what does everyone think about 37yr old Australian ex-Baywatch star Jaason Simmons getting married to his partner in Canada & adopting a child together. Much of the media (incl gay multimedia) have gone out of thier way to totally ignore the story. You'll have to google it yourself to find the links, or just pop out to read it & see the photos in New Idea magazine.

We all put our foot in it sometimes, either through sheer ignorance, or as suggested in this case, potential misunderstanding.I wouldn't want to be wandering around Sydney in shorts, facepaint and guitar--at least not until I've regained my waist. I would be too self conscious about people looking at my gut. Go back and look through all the posts there are and you'll find plenty of times that I've put my foot in it too. As for Sydney Gay Boy TV, I think he's on to a short-term winner, and should "keep it up".

The opening show of Big Brother 2008 can only be described as a train wreck! What a load of garbage. The opening show was dull and boring. I think the ratings will highlight how flat the opening show was.And what's with the cheap set. It looked like it was recycled from a 1980's game show. Was there a special on white paint and plasterboard at Hardwarehouse? Kyle will not be happy. Ian Thorpe's "genderless" new lover - ie no gender specified, in fact completely avoided mentioning
In Ian Thorpe's exact words- "There is (someone special in my life), but they don't live in this country," Thorpe told The Sunday Telegraph. Mmmm, how many of us when feeling pressured to stay in the closet in certain situations/conversations have carefully replaced the words "he" with "they" when talking about a boyfriend. I guess we can all just stay tuned! I just want to know if he's a top or bottom! Maybe he's hooked up with Ian Roberts??? Seriously, now is the perfect time to come clean & reveal the truth if he is actually gay, to lend much needed support to the firt openly out Aussie Olympian Matthew Mitcham trying to have his open, yet officially "invisible" relationship recognised- http://www.smh.com.au/news/beijing2008/out-proud-and-ready-to-go-for-gold/2008/05/23/1211183107597.html

Isn't it interesting that it's Matthew who has come out.He is younger, not financially secure, and isn't an undisputed world champion (yet). You'd think that someone who had unqualified success (both financial as well as sporting) would be in the position to come out publicly and be unaffected by it. I guess having guts isn't a essential quality to being a world champion. Good luck to Matthew. He is already a winner, whilst others still play the coward....

Good luck to Matthew. He is already a winner, whilst others still play the coward...." I've never understood why famous people have to publicly declare their sexual preferences. It's a private matter and NONE of anyone elses business. To call someone a coward for keeping private matters private is perverse and offensive. It's idiot comments like yours that force celebrities to keep on hiding. If thorpe comes out then well and good, if not then he's still a champion and a role model for anyone to look up to. What or who he does in the privacy of his bedroom is none of your business. At least he's not like certain singers I know who hide their sexuality from the world while they are making money and "come out" after a few failed releases. Suddenly they have to come clean and find a whole new gullible audience at the same time.

Your attack on "certain singers" is as bad as the others attack on sportsmen. I agree that sexuality is a private matter and no one should be forced to come out. This applies equally to sportsmen and musicians and anyone else.
On the other hand if someone chooses to come out publicly they must also be respected for that decision. If it finds them a new audience that is their good luck and the luck of the people who enjoy their music. There is absolutely no need to put either the artist or the audience down for enjoying music.
|
Arti, my point was they were quite comfortable in the closet while the 12yo girls bought their records but when that audience dries up, they declair their gayness and boost record sales.
It's happened a few times lately and just smacks of desperation rather than any genuine desire to come out.

Maybe its the other way around. Because they have all these 12yo female fans they fear that by coming out they will loose those fans. Once the 12yos move on to the next artist they can afford to let the world know the truth.
There are so many other reason why someone would choose to come out (or not). Your post just smacks of cynicism.

Re: Ian Thorpe's "genderless" new lover - ie no gender specified, in fact completely avoided mentioning
See the whole thing with high profile people is the feeling that by coming out they are saying "Ok I perpetrated a huge fraud/charade all these years by implying I was straight".They anguish over the effects of that, such as "can he be trusted? How can we believe anything he says now" So whilst the fear of being exposed as a liar and somebody untrustworthy is bigger than the hassle of hiding in the closet, they won't come out.

I dont think its anything like this. I have worked with these people.
Depending on what profession you are in , a lot of people stay in the closet so that they can get Movie and/or TV roles or if sports people can get advertising sponsors. Its a case of they gay guy not being seen as able to do the romantic role or the butch Rambo type roles. Sports people in a similar predicament ie will those who buy the products buy them because the person is gay ? How many sponsors does Ian Roberts have ? So its best for them to just shut their mouths, keep themselves in the closet and suck as much money out of the Studios and/or Sponsors. I little birdie told me exactly that about a certain sports person. Shut your mouth, get all the $'s you can and when you are financially secure , you decide if you want to come out. I dont agree with the line of "can they be trusted" etc as most people would understand why they kept their mouth shut. To be honest I dont mind this approach as after this person has acted in their macho roles , or won gold medals etc it just proves that we are no different than anyone else. Instead of the reverse of coming out and then trying to win those roles/sponsors.

people like you make me sick. Why should someone come out because you want them to ? Does everyone come out when they are a teeneager or ealy 20's ? NO People come out when they want to if they ever do. It is their life and not yours. What do these people owe you ? or owe the gay community ? I can think of an older female Olympic winner who wont come out. If they turn against the gay community or say wrong things then yep then it can be open season on them. I loathe nothing more than people who go about outing others unless as above they are saying negative things. There are lots of way more famous actors/actresses who also have not come out - their choice not yours. So honestly, stop moaning about it. Cowards are those that out people because they think
they should declare their sexuality. Its great you are out and about and leading the gay community. Others dont care about their sexuality , dont care about the community and that my friend is their choice. Not everyone comes out so easily. For some it is a painful experience. They get married, they have children and they are in the 40/50/60's before they fully accept they are gay or they may never accept it. I go to the gym with an Italian guy who is such a woman........yet he is married , trying for children. He is feminine, he looks at other guys. Should I demand that he come out ! Should I announce to the gym that he is gay ? Just leave off with your sad assumptions. Whether they are right or wrong ( and I too doubt that ).

I have been coming back to this wall re outing/coming
out. I am curious as to why some posters think, almost demand that a certain person/s should come out. Why ? As another poster stated it is their life to live and that people come to grips with their sexuality at varying ages. If these people are not making homophobic comments etc then they should be left alone. It would be a perfect world if everyone declared their sexuality at 18 but I have worked with people who came out only after they were married and had a couple of kids and were in their 40's. When they did come out I asked the questions - Did you always know ? did you hide it ? and they said they felt things towards other guys but had no acted on it. One guy just did beats but eventually came to realise what his preferences were and finally admitted to everyone. Life is not perfect and everyone comes to terms with things like their sexuality under their own terms. Just because someone is famous does not mean they have different rules apply to them. They are still human and have to work out their own feelings themselves and not by someone else who assumes they are gay and should immediately stand up and say so. Not all of us are gay and proud.

NO.
what you think someone who is "famous" and has money has the answers to everything ? puh-lease ! Do they "owe" the community something ? NO. Dont you get it ? it is their life not yours. Doesnt matter who they are out to , if they do not wish to speak about it in public life it is their call, their choice and NOT YOURS. As Arti has said, everyone is entitled to their own private life. Lets reverse things. If someone demanded you should do something in your life that you did not want to do who would you please ? the person demanding ? or yourself ? School kids have been bullied ever since their were schools for all sorts of reasons whether they are gay or fat or ugly or clumsy. Thats kids and thats part of growing up. Sure some dont handle it but the majority do. Its life's lessons. I could just imagine a gay kid staring down the other kids and saying " ........... is gay so there " ! get his head punched in before he knew it. Let go of it will you.. Its their life and you have no right to demand something of/from them.

Unless they are being negative towards the community the answer is no.

The point of the post is that if it is not skin off their nose (ie. no family fallout, no financial fallout), then it's just selfish to not come out.
Yeah, it's a pretty high standard to live up to, but hey some of us are community minded and not just thinking about ourselves. If it weren't for people coming out before me/us and putting up violence, discrimination and real, life-altering bigotry, then our life (and closeted sports stars lives) would be very different. They wouldn't be able to be out to their family and live their lives the way they do if it weren' for those people who came before us. And if we owe our predecessors, the only way I see in repaying them is to contribute to the community and what they have fought for. And to make things even before for those who will come after us. As for "xyz champion gold medal swimmer/diver/sprinter is gay" being followed by punch in the head, you really don't know how the world works and what effects people coming out can have on people's perception on what it means to be gay. Homophobia isn't "one of life's lessons" any more than domestic violence or child abuse is. Homophobia is bigotry. Pure and simple and it DOES affect EVERYONE - whether you believe it or not. Just imagine what your life would've been like had there been no homophobia in this world. Your friends would be different, your upbringing and personal history would've been different and your whole personality would've been different. Believe that because it's true. So many of your circumstances would've been different that everyone's lives would've been different. That's something you can't deny. And as for those sportstars who have nothing to loose and yet still don't lend a hand to the cause, well in my book they are bigger losers than anyone I can think of. It's pure selfishness in my book, even if you think it's perfectly acceptable. All human beings are a part of a community, and it's this community spirit co-operation that has altered the course of human history and it separates us from most other animals.

Yes everyone DOES come out at different stages in their life. Some people have already come out to family and friends and it is an "open secret" - it's just the suburban public who are played for fools thinking that so and so is heterosexual.
Sure it's their right to not come out publicly. And it's my right to think those people are losers because they are selfish. But hey, come on, I'm just expressing an opinion - i'm not outing people. I'm not typing a long list of people who are gay. I'm simply expressing an opinion that those people are hardly heroes. it takes courage to come out. And if you are financially secure and out to all your friends and family, then how come you don't have that little bit of extra courage to state it publicly? I'm not saying that completely closeted stars who are unsure or anxious about their sexuality should come out - but those people who ARE secure in their sexuality, who ARE out to their family, who ARE financially secure and will never need to work again in their life. You'd kinda expect that those people coming out would be a no-brainer - but it's just selishness because they don't want people to think less of them, because they don't want to miss out on some lucrative deal to add 1% to their total wealth. It's pure selfishness, and a whole lot of gutlessnes as well......

This is all one sided ie your side. Again its you who are selfish. Yes you have your opinion but you keep forgetting one thing ! and its in your first sentence. People will come out at different stages of their life. End of your selfish rant because thats it in a nutshell. You are saying they are selfish but they are not ready yet is all. True they may never come out but just how do you gauge they are ready ? because they are famous and rich and financially secure and have come out to family ? There are plenty of examples of people who have come out publicly and they are all different ages. So get of your high horse about who ever is up your nose. What if as a possible scenario that in say 5 years time this person comes out, devotes half of their millions to gay charities and devotes 75% of their life to campaiging for the gay community. I am sure that will be alright by you ? and to them. But at the moment they dont want to.

But currently they don't. I think you are the one who should let it go - i'm hardly holding you to ransom on this thread - merely pointing out that there are certain stars (not naming names) who are taking the easy road at the expense of vulnerable others. now seriously, if someone is out to their family and friends, and not in need of anyone financially, what reason could they have not to publicly come out? More money? Ego? Wanting to be universally loved by the public? I think it's a combination of all three.

Because they are already "out now" but just staying in the public closet for financial gain (when they don't really need that extra money). In my book that's the worst possible reason to be in the closet.
You seem to have a real problem that one person out there in the anonymous THINKS these publicly closeted stars are gutless. What difference does it make that I think that to you? I'm not threatening to go public with names, I'm merely stating my opinion. (Which has been thought out long before this discussion ever came up on this board). Look I don't think we are going to change each others opinion. I think they are selfish, you think I am selfish. end of story.

How do you know they have nothing to loose? Are you able to guarantee them that everything will be alright after the come out? Can you prove that they will not loose any opportunities, friends, money, etc, etc? Can you ensure they will not be affected by homophobia? No of course you can't. Until there is absolutely no stigma to homosexuality coming out will always be a difficult decision, one where you have to weigh up the costs against the benefits. You are the one that is being selfish and insensitive by claiming that they have nothing to loose, by demanding that they proclaim their sexuality. As Kylie says "better the devil you know".

All that security does not detract from the basic fact that if I outed myself to my father, it would crush his heart. So, are you going to accuse me of being selfish because I spare my father such feelings? It's not my fault he grew up in a less tolerant world. I think you're the one being selfish for criticising people who don't conform to your standards of social acknowledgement. If there's a piece of eye-candy out there--enjoy the view, but don't complain because it doesn't behave the way you expect.

And thank you Professor !
I was getting worried I was the only one replying to this guy. And that is another factor you have added ie your father. Each to his own and just accept it.

Yeah do you reckon Rupert Murdoch's children would be "crushed" if their father came out? The possibility of losing out on the $$$$ would mean they wouldn't have a problem with it at all. it's funny what lots of $$$ makes people do.
Sure your father might have a problem IF you come out - but what if you WERE out to your father and he didn't have a problem with it? How would you be sparing him then? And how does your father's "feelings" compare with violent homophobia that others less fortunate than us experience? Merely a brief sentence at the bottom of a long long article. BTW - the people I'm referring do - I don't consider eye candy!

You are truly unbelievable.
Explain to us all when people you should come out ? You have posted many times saying now ? you mean every single gay person should stand up right now this minute and declare publicly they are gay ? I'm sorry but your view on this is so twisted as to be disturbing. Not only do you not know the Professor's situation or his father's but you dont seem to believe in personal rights in this world . You obviously have a bug up your butt on the subject. What has happened to you ? violence ? rejection ? mis-understanding ? Again, individuals make their own choices with their life and if they want to come out they will decide in their own time frame. Whether they decide to come out at 20 or 20 or 50 or 70 or never is their choice and will never be yours. And you have to accept it.

There will be no exemptions. Newsreaders, sports participants and sports commentators, reporters, politicians, law enforcement.Do you really want to wind the clock back so far? When did you come out ?
Did you never lie to family and/or friends about your sexuality ? A lot of people did but you have to accept people will come out when they are ready and not when you expect them to. Its like you expect whoever it is your not outing to stand up and say they are gay. They may be still uncomfortable with that idea and coming to terms with it much more slowly than others. There is not golden rule you must declare your sexuality at a certain age is there ? NO. Just give it up.

can I ask if you are happy the way Darren Hayes has come and marrying his boyfriend ? My guess is you are happy with him. Darren born 1972 and the other person you want to come out 1982. So 10 years apart and Darren only came out recently. So that gives the other person a few more years yet and who is to know if he doesnt came out in a blaze of glory and marry his boyfriend as well ? Just accept each person will come out in their own time frame , not yours.

Peter Lloyd sacked
The AustralianDecember 03, 2008 A spokeswoman for the ABC yesterday would not say the broadcaster had terminated Lloyd's contract, but confirmed that, following Lloyd's sentencing and his inability to continue working, "the ABC's employment relationship with Peter has come to an end". What abysmal treatment by the ABC of a staff member suffering PTSD, depression, and goodness knows what else from assignments ABC Television sent him to report on. He should have been placed on 10 months sick leave until he can return to Australia. Shame Mark Scott!!! Shame!!! Australian Broadcasting Corporation Lateline Broadcast: 31/05/2007 http://www.abc.net.au/lateline/content/2007/s1939384.htm TONY JONES: Channel 7's head of News and Current Affairs Peter Meakin was today sentenced to 14 months of weekend detention after being found guilty of drink-driving. The news boss also lost his licence for eight years. JOHN STEWART: Peter Meakin was found guilty of drink-driving and dangerous driving after failing to stop for a random breath test and speeding away from the police last year. JOHN STEWART: Despite the embarrassing episode, Channel 7 management are standing by their head of News and Current Affairs. BRUCE MCWILLIAM, CHANNEL 7 NETWROK DIRECTOR: The company accepts Peter's contrition and acceptance of responsibility which he's always been completely up front about and that's very typical of Peter. __________________________________ Peter Meakin is arguably one of the prime culprits for dumbing down television journalism over the past 20 years. He is convicted of crimes that put at serious risk the lives of the police doing their job, and the lives of other people in the community using the roads. He receives a domestic jail term of 14 months home detention, and retains his position as head of News and Current Affairs at SEVEN. Glenn Milne verbally and physically assaults another journalist on national television during the Walkley journalism award ceremony, blaming a mix of migraine medication and alcohol. ABC Television still invites Milne onto the Insiders. Peter Lloyd self medicates with an illicit drug, a victimless crime, for which he would receive a fine, a slap on the wrist and diversion to drug counselling if he'd been caught in most jurisdictions in Australia. ABC Television sacks him.

May I suggest a flood of emails and letters pointing out the above anomalies (keep it polite please), pointing out that Lloyd has indeed served the ABC well by entering into dangerous and traumatic areas, and yet a couple of pen-pushers have gotten away with more reckless behavior.

oh come on, he pleaded guilty to drugs charges overseas. If he was suffering from PTSD he should've gone on leave and returned home to Australia. How can he ever continue to do his job when he has disrespected his employer's relationship with foreign countries (even if they are unreasonable). He's not a labourer or businessman, he's (or was) a foreign correspondant for our national broadcaster and brought them into disrepute.
I hate it when people use genuine psychiatic disorders that disrupt and destroy other people's lives as excuses for their own bad behaviour. Pointing out that commercial television stations don't have a problem with criminal records is NOT a reason for the ABC to lower their standards. Perhaps he could just move over to commercial journalism instead???

Most people with PTSD don't realize they have it. It's only after they or others start to recognise incredibly bad decisions that the condition is even noticed. Surely, once Lloyd has paid his dues, just like anyone else, he should reasonably expect to find himself back where he started, but with the correct meds.I know I'm further revealing my age, but once upon a time, the ABC set the standard as to what sort of material "should" be on TV, and it was up to the commercial stations to try and match it. ABC reporters were the ones who dared to suggest that Australia's participation in the Vietnam War was inappropriate--these days they just toe the party line. As for the its reputation, the ABC has been on a down hill slide ever since a certain CEO (whom I shan't name because of libel laws) strangled its finances and its creativity. And then johnnie howard came along and crippled it further. Do you think now that jackboot johnnie is gone, we may get The Glasshouse back on air? Even Media Watch is a mere wrist slap compared to the Power Punch that it used to be. At least they're still willing to point the finger at themselves. And yes, a former flatmate's son used to play on his schizophrenic bipolar disorder. One doctor put him on Vitamin B and he "magically" became normal, but because he then had no excuse for misbehavior he stopped taking it.
The Professor - I'm not defending drugs, but I disapprove of double standards. - Sat 13 Dec 2008 00:33:07 Replies: add

Thorpie Part 2
AND...........http://www.news.com.au/story/0,,24983903-1702,00.html Swimmer Amanda Beard flatly denies relationship with Ian Thorpe By Carly Crawford in New York The Daily Telegraph IAN THORPE thought he and the world's sexiest swimmer Amanda Beard were in a relationship. She saw it differently. Champion athlete Beard has flatly denied that she and Thorpe were once lovers. "It's baloney," her agent Evan Morganstein told The Daily Telegraph. As speculation swirls around Mr Thorpe's friendship with his Brazilian flatmate Daniel Mendes, Beard was adamant that she and Thorpe were never an item. But Thorpe maintains he is not gay. The retired superstar swimmer was again forced to deny rumours he is gay after he was photographed with Mendes on holiday in Brazil where they had been visiting Mendes' family. Thorpe's management issued a statement pointing to his comments in a 2007 magazine article in which he spoke of his affair with Beard. "Well, I did have a long-term, long-distance relationship (with champion American breaststroker Amanda Beard), and it was great while it lasted. It was sort of public knowledge we were seeing each other, and yet not. It went on for ages, years," he was quoted as saying. But Beard, 27, yesterday told her agent: "Take out the word relationship and put in the word friendship and that's exactly what it was." Mr Morganstien insisted Beard was never been romantically involved with Thorpe. "To her it was absolutely a long-term, long distance friendship and that's all it ever was," Mr Morganstein said.

Home & Away lesbian kiss cut by Ch7- after complaints by Howard/KRudd emboldend Christian Extremists
"The original scene, played by actors Esther Anderson and Katie Bell, was no more intimate than any kiss shared by a heterosexual couple, sources said. The show is popular internationally, especially with younger viewers, and attracts an Australian audience of more than one million every week night. "To me there's no difference - love's love. The fact that your partner's the same sex is no different. You just want to be loved." " The storylines on H&A in the past have included rapes, kidnappings, gang violence, murders, and all the hetero kissing and sex you could poke a stick at. But the sight of two girls sharing one kiss has to be edited out in our new Christian-Extremist-Americanised Aussie society that has developed under Howard and Rudd. (and don't forget Rudd sidekick Senator "Catholic Conroy" also wanting to censor the internet) But in the U.K., you can see Elton John kissing his male partner & even having a gay wedding, while we drift away from U.K. influence, into American Hillbilly Hillsong influence.

I was on set at Channel 7 back when A Country Practice was in production. At the time, they had an M2M kiss which made it to air, and the story line revolved around this guy being unwillingly outed to the whole "valley". I guess we're now going backwards. Given the "backdoor" deals that have been done in the past, some who's good at Photoshop should produce a picture of Fred Nile and John Howard in a passionate embrace...

True Blood was interesting if a tad inaccessible, with a few hot guys thrown in to make it more appealing.
Personally I preferred "Being Human" for the greater characterisation. Nevertheless, I can't wait to see Season 2 of both.

Whatever! The Science of Teens
Totally unbelievable that a program on teen sexuality can sum up sex as being a chemical urge to procreate. Fred Nile would have been proud how the program did worse than discount gay sexuality, it totally ignored its even existence. Whatever, the science of teens? Yeah well whatever. :\

In defence of the programme, which clearly aims to be a somewhat scientific but light hearted look at teen realities, general biological urges are probably much better understood by science than homosexual urges. As a result the programme naturally discusses what is best understood and at the same time least controversial. It is also possible that the series will deal specifically with homosexuality in a later episode in which case the quetion will be how well it does that. Being in a minority is difficult, of course, but let's not let it make us paranoid about every last thing we ever see discussed. That's just my opinion.

Didn't see it. Got enough info from the above posts. Of the sentient creatures on planet Earth only Humans and Dolphins engage in sexual behavior on a purely recreational level. The Bonobo monkey has integrated sex into its social structure quite nicely: gay or straight. Hi! Bonk. Bye! Bonk. Fight! Bonk. Share food. Bonk. Just passing. Bonk. And let's not forget those gay penguins who maintain their relationships as strongly as any "straight" pair of penguins. I think the science around sexuality is still quite tainted by our morals - and that is affecting the kinds of "theories" people come up with.
Clearly sexuality is not only about procreation because even heterosexuals do everything in their power not to procreate 99.9% of the time they are having sex. Just like whats-his-name got imprisoned by the church for suggesting that the earth was not the centre of the universe, so too our research on sexuality is tainted by religion.
