Spencer Tunick took photos of 5200 gay and lesbian and straight people on the steps of the Opera House in an artwork called The Base. The work was commissioned by New Mardi Gras and supported by City of Sydney, The Opera House and The Royal Botanic Gardens.
People gathered at 4am and waited until sunrise before taking their clothes off and arranging themselves nude on the steps and the forecourt of The Opera House. It was overcast and there was a chill breeze, but most participants stayed until the end.
Many then participated in a second shoot inside the concert hall.
A photo shoot for New Mardi Gras members only was held at Lady Jane Beach on 2 March.
