The Sydney Star Observer (SSO) is a weekly Gay and Lesbian newspaper published by Gay & Lesbian Community Publishing Limited. It is available for free from most gay venues across Sydney.

History

The Sydney Star (as it was then known) was initially founded in 1978. In 1988 the paper was purchased by a company formed to bring the paper into community ownership. There were initially 200 shareholders however this was later increased by splitting each share into four. The shareholders do not receive a dividend on their shares with all profits being put into building the business.

Management

The running of the organisation is overseen by a board of ten directors. The editor is always on the board of directors. Eight directors are elected by the shareholders at the Annual General Meeting and the final director is elected by staff.
