Queer is often used to describe anyone who does not identify as straight. There are many different definitions of queer.

In the 1990s queer started to be used as a term to include the whole of the LGBT community. It was an attempt to return to the 1970s when the term gay was universally accepted. while many people happily accepted this label, many others objected, prefering to be called gay, lesbian, etc. Subsequently queer was recognised as an identity on its own, and included in the acronym GLBTQ.
