Pinkboard Sleaze Ball 98 Graffiti Wall 2

Sleaze is
Sydney is getting weirder and weirder as the night approaches. The sewing machines are humming (and even singing). The new tatoos and peircings are healing. The new limbs are getting comfortable. The weather is constantly changing. But the big question is will we be dancing under the stars?

So leave your weird comment, gossip or costume ideas in the form at the bottom of this page. It will be automatically added to the wall.

If Sleaze disappoints, or is rescheduled, or cancelled, or moved to Homebush … pack up your troubles in your old kit bag (?!) and join the rest of us heading west to Perth for the Pride parade and party on 31 October. The theme for the party this year is Eternal Glamnation — something to do with the fact that it's Haloween. They get about 4000 people I think and its very very gay and lesbian from past experience. F*F*F*F*Fabulous. See ya there.

100% gay - leave it to the experts and never mind worrying about rain days and site problems. What to wear?

I am going to Perth for their Pride Party and whilst I can't wait for sleaze if the dates did somehow clash then Perth is where I will be. Perth Pride is the B*E*S*T party I have ever been to. And its under $40.00 at last time I asked.

It just has to be said. Why do people insist of applying fake tans to go to parties? Is it because these people are desperately trying to 'look good' by attaining that exact same look as all those 'beautiful' boys we see out and about, that not only have a tan, but also 'a body'. Do people who 'apply' tans on the day of the party so desperate to look like that because they think that it will illude people into thinking that since they have a tan they must have 'a body' too? Don't these 'applicators realise that those boys with tans and bodies to match, actually have those tans because they work on them, just like they have bodies because they work on them too. You can always pick the 'applicators' at the end of the night, because their 'tans' have gone patchy, and mostly turned a sickly yellow/green! If anyone says that no one notices that at the end of the party is badly mistaken, as one of the games that we play walking back from a party is 'spot the applicator'! Not only does it look 'odd', to say the least, after the party, even during the party they are spottable under the lights, especially when they use a lot of the purle/UV lighting, as they are prone to do. I find its usually the same people who apply their tan as part of the dance party uniform, ie. Shorts / Singlet / Fake Tan, as those who put no effort into what they wear either, ie. Shorts / Singlet / Fake Tan. If it's that important that you look 'so hot', why don't they go to the least bit of effort and be a tinsey bit imaginative. A Sleaze Ball with out fake tan - that would be weird, and we wouldn't have to wonder whether it was fake tan, or just a serious but of Hepatitis. SBLB - I left my brain at Trade, and my heart in Russell Square. Watch out for trade in November, 14th and 21st - yes, two weekends in a row! See you there.
Lilli White - Fri Sep 18 10:02:03 1998
My fake tan is really good and it just enhances my semi tanned skin, which hasnt had the opportunity to see the summer sun for a few months, but it looks very real and my bod is nice and cut, so snow white good luck picking me as an applicator , oh yeah and kiss my freshly waxed butt
we are living in a superficial world, and I am a superficial boy - Fri Sep 18 11:41:59 1998
Hey Guys - can I come to the Sleaze Ball with you guys? I promise I won't tell anyone. It will be "our" little secret. I have this great outfit that I know you will all just love, only thing is I have to remove the stain first!

Fri Sep 18 13:12:51 1998
This year I will not hide my whiteness beneath fake tan. This year I will walk with head held high knowing that in twenty years I'll be damn glad I didn't bake myself in the sun like the rest of those lizard faced queens (muscled or otherwise). It should fit in well with the theme too...its pretty weird to see a fag without a tan.
Bright, white but very youthful sunscreen queen! - Fri Sep 18 13:28:56 1998
What's worrying is the number of party people who have been to Sleaze before but aren't going this time. Some are doing Frisky but many aren't going to anything except maybe a recovery. If MG is saying that "ticket sales are on a par with last year" my judgment is that sales are down! A smaller party will be a pity. Speaking for myself, I like a big party. But speaking for the wider community, we also need a diverse party with venues, music and events to cater for all tastes - including costume parades and, yes, catwalks for eckied exhibitionist dykes, queens and str8s. And not just because that would be terribly politically correct, nor because for many of us it would thus be more enjoyable. We have to remember (1) that the MG parties are fund-raisers without which we would not have the core events of parade and festival; (2) people won't go to the parties if they don't feel they get value, which in turn means they cost to put on; (3) to be big enuff, the parties need to be fun for all of us - and we are a diverse community. Think about this next time you want to complain that the parties aren't pandering one person's ideas of what is good music/ambience/size/crowd makeup.
78er - Fri Sep 18 16:28:23 1998
Superficial Boy : If you're already semi tanned why go out at just prove to everyone that you're an 'applicator'? Of course your skin hasn't seen the sun for months, no ones has, why make it plainly obvious to us all that you're an applicator? If you think that you'll look out of place with a tan, perhaps you should realise that there are plenty more people out there who won't be 'applicating' hence making yourself even more obvious.

Fri Sep 18 16:49:27 1998
I don't what's worse - complaining about fake tans, or actually being petty to play "spot the fake tan"! As for the shorts and singlets thing, I like to dress this way for comfort on the dance floor. Maybe I've got more interesting things to do with my life than lie around in the sun, go to they gym and preoccupy my imagination with costume ideas for Sleaze!
Get a life, not a tan! - Fri Sep 18 17:02:37 1998
If you haven't got two seconds to try and bit the least bit imaginative about a costume than you are obviouly 'way' to busy to even go! Playing 'spot the tan' isn't petty, it's an interesting reflection on the people who go to the parties.
Fri Sep 18 17:14:45 1998
A good friend of mine is on the exclusive party committee & told me that an Aussie gal who's made it big in Japan is performing At Sleaze. Her name is Paula Terry! She has a voice a bit like Kylie's & the CD is great! She's performing with 50 naked dykes to an erotic song!! By the way, who cares about tan's!! Everyone, just gets really trashed & in those dark halls, you cant really tell! Also, everybody looks really f*%ked when leaving the party! What's the goss on the shows? I heard Danni is also making an appearance! But don't tell anybody!!

To the fake tan man ..... get a life! who died and made you the fashion/good taste/ettiquette/know all of the g&l community. No wonder people talk about Sydnet 'attitude'. To all the fake tanners out there - go for it....it's your night and if it helps you to feel a little glamorous then it cant be all bad..enjoy!

nood_dood - Sun Sep 20 6:03:28 1998
How about dicks out all night all over the showgrounds!
Sun Sep 20 10:12:05 1998
Dicks Out has to happen in the RHI. It serves no purpose happening in the mostly gay male Dome (where there are always a few dicks out anyway).

The Big Event is on Tuesday night at 6:30pm. It will be an evening of entertainment outside Parliament House. If you are lesbian or gay and will ever be in a relationship, make sure you attend. If you support the gay and lesbian community by attending our parties, show the government your support by being at The Big Event.

Shows originally planned for 12, 2, 4, and 8. 12 and 2 to be "boys" shows, with 4 and 8 to be "girls" shows. One of them is to be cancelled, however, but not yet heard which. Will keep you posted.

Girls shows at 4 & 8 - haven't all the lesbians gone home by 4?
Sun Sep 20 14:43:41 1998
To all these people touting the idea of "dicks out", perhaps the fantasy is overriding the reality considering the physical effects of certain substances. I don't think it would be a good look. Kinda infantile really.
Kirk - Sun Sep 20 15:16:28 1998
You know, this idea of "Weird" is an enigma. Like, since when has Sleaze not been Weird. It's like a Right-wing Christian rally with a "Fanatical" theme, or an Amway seminar with a "Greed" theme. I can't think of one idea that would be really weird that I haven't already seen at Sleaze. We could all go as Line Dancers, would that be weird enough? How about a sexual abstinence theme? I'm just going to go as the boring fag I am, and hopefully something really weird, like the second coming or a Queensland election will eclipse the night.
Kirk 2 - Sun Sep 20 15:27:48 1998
The only thing infantile about 'dicks out' would be the size of most of them as a result of penis altering substances!

Bimbolina - Sun Sep 20 18:09:22 1998
Does anyone know if MG plan to release a Sleaze '98 cd prior to the party as was done in '97? What's the latest on the venue situation as far as a ceiling and windows are concerned? Pleasing to see the Health Authorities and the Media having such concern with the G+L community by issuing a warning related to the mixing of Viagra and Auntie Amyl. (with film of people going to Mardi Gras playing). Excuse my sarcastic tone. I'll be one person sticking with the usual party accessories. Imagine Viagra with an E. The outcome would be a 1 inch erection. That is weird.

Pretend that you are on drugs. Take ziploc bags filled with talcum powder, capsules and small pieces of cardboard. The party had better be a hell of a lot better than last year - hopefully all the straights from Bankstown way will leave their knives at home this time - worst part is they will be next door for the Grand Final - I hope the car park security is up to it - so far a dozen straights from my office are going to OUR party they say they got tix from a (gay) non member who has a boyfriend working for MG!!!!

Thu Sep 24 8:23:37 1998
Last years party was great! I just had the worst time in my life though. Thank God my night was saved by Chelsea Buns with that awe inspiring closing show that made my whole night worth it! I've never loved a drag before, but I feel in love with Chelsea that morning.

If you won't to discuss ticketing scandals: A friend couldn't get through on the Mardi Gras / Ticketek hotline, so tried a regular Ticketek number. Was able to purchase tickets, with no questions about membership details, and had the tickets mailed to his address. He's written to MG, I beleive. I would like to see there response and Ticketeks too. Another friend who rang Ticketek was told very abruptly that tickets had sold out and was hung up on. I hope this would be looked into as well!
Not against Ticketek, but would ike to know if the system is working. - Thu Sep 24 8:55:56 1998
Fake tan, the Grand Final & Kate Cerbrano?!!(Doing a medley?aaaaarrrggghhh!) All these insignifigant & shallow details read like a Sienfeld script! Lets get down to the nitty-gritty:Are there going to be any actual VIP's in the VIP bar or just the usual motley crue hoping for an open bar?(and Moggy of course)

It was not John Howard (yuk) that called the election to fall on Mardi Gras Party night a few years back - it was Paul Keating. We need tax reform with adjustments - so I will be voting Democrat in the Senate and for the GST in the Lower House. Now, onto Sleaze, glad to hear about the 'gender specific spaces' in the Hordern (how many straights will try get into the same gender areas?)
Proud to be Gay - Fri Sep 25 2:37:26 1998
I think that MG are stealing my trips right out of my head. It was I who saw them peal off the roof of the Horden at Cyber sleaze to reveal all the stars..... OK different hall and the roof will be missing as you get into the party not as your fun kicks in, and I guess there will be *weird* things floating in the air rather than spacestations. And in my trip the toilets worked...mmmm.. maybe they didn't steal my trip ...

Gary Leeson said on out fm that not only is the roof back on both the Hordern and RHI but the first layer of sound proofing will be in the RHI. They are expecting improved sound quality this year. They also say that the exposed roof in the Hordern is quite beautiful and will only be exposed for this party.

I had a Weird pre Sleze dream last night - I was in the RHI and Bonnie Tyler and Celine Dion were duetting to Total Eclipse of the Heart. Help me. Please.
Need help - Sun Sep 27 14:53:01 1998
Stony Chute? as in Nimbin? My your head must be either full of fabo idea's or totally empty, guess you are one of us! Personally I like the idea loincloths and fake tans and wild wigs, shame that I don't have the body for it. Guess that it will have to be those little see through shorts with the black banded waist, cause with a big dick who want's to talk??? Keep those ideas comming at me people, never to late to find inspiration!

Is this board working?
Sun Sep 27 23:43:06 1998
Yahoo, it looks like Pauline Pantsdown is a shoe-in for a Sleaze performance - topical, clever, local, weird *and* she can mime, which is more than you can say for most Sydney drag queens (oops, well if you're talking about drag queens it's mandatory to bitch, isn't it?). She may even be sexy - but is she sleazy tho? Maybe she'll prove she's a backdoor man on stage...
Fastlove - Mon Sep 28 16:20:28 1998
Five more sleeps 'til no sleep at all!
Rowan - Mon Sep 28 17:36:05 1998
I can't wait to see how the same sex spaces are going to work. I hope they do work, tho' cause if they do, we'll have them forever ! Which will get the misogynists out of the lesbian's hair, and the straights out of the party. I think it's a great idea to have the same sex spaces in the same hall, so we can get with our gay boy friends after the party and go off about the same lighting or music, instead of us all having been in different halls with different vibes. Good option, Mardi Gras.
Hopeful - Mon Sep 28 19:08:16 1998
Just confirming that the roofs are definitely on. I was bumping in today and it looks all really weird because it is so different.

Martia, Martia, Martia! She was all over the strip this weekend promoting her new single - Flashdance, what a feeling - What was Weird though was that she did'nt sing, hmmmm. Perhaps she has signed a contract to perform somewhere.......

Carol, aren't you keeping up with the boys, now that Bobby has grown up, and come out, all his friends call him Martia. But how is he going to use that economy pack of genital swabs in his costume.
Alice - Tue Sep 29 4:03:08 1998
Love Marcia. She's also local, clever *and* boy she can sing. And when she sang "Your love still brings me to my knees" at MG all those years ago fan dancing and wearing purple lycra, she really was 'one of us' - and weird with it. As for her choice of a disco diva revival number: "Flashdance - What a feeling", I was disappointed hearing it at the Sh**t last weekend coz' I know she can do so much better...but I'll probably go off to it if she performs it live at Sleaze, nevertheless! PS Wasn't fussed with the poster, but the cartoonish banners/ decorations look amazing. As for using them as room dividers in the Horden - hmmmn. Guess we'll have to wait and see how that works (or doesn't!).
Fastlove - Tue Sep 29 12:20:45 1998
Went to the old showgrounds today & it is fantastical - The Horden is going to be weird!See ya there... nobody

So even Gary Leeson thinks of himself as a "tired old party director" (SSO 24/9/98). Couldn't agree more. Isn't it time to move on Gary and let someone with some fresh ideas take over? Or is your boyfriend using you as his "voice" within the organisation?
Nat - Tue Sep 29 22:42:31 1998
I wonder whether Nat has ever taken time out to volunteer his services to Mardi Gras. Probably not, as it must be so time consuming to sit back and heap shit on those that do.
Wed Sep 30 10:41:00 1998

Greg - Wed Sep 30 15:29:20 1998
Nightmares, butterflies - who'd have thought something like a dance party could inspire such fabulous terror? Love it. Awful but true stories about what can happen include one about a friend of mine who shall remain nameless (Peter) who had a restless Friday night's sleep, rushed madly around getting things together Saturday, got prepared and costumed and lay down on the couch for a pre-Sleaze disco nap...and woke up at 5am. At least he looked fresh when he finally arrived. I think there's something in that for all of us...
Fastlove - Wed Sep 30 16:51:38 1998
dear 78er, there are verious reasons one goes to sleaze. dancing is not one of mine... i like it as a safe freindly enviroment to get 'off my face'. a couple of things have been missing due to the venue, seating in a dance space. the second is a real warm chill out space. i rather enjoyed (and spent most of my night) at either the groove bar or the old chinese resturant, which had soft lounge music. both these buildings have gone and i wonder if mardi gras could look into doing something else to add these sort of spaces. at my request i got NYC top lounge dj (yes there is a big scene there) to submitt a tape for consideration. (he was rejected). i like the idea of many spaces, dance chill out etc. spaces were one can find a sence of comfort and well being with out being in the medical tent when/if the sences are over loading or your overheating (in this regard mardi gras party was a disarster, it was about 9 deg outside and 34 inside...not good for the body. these other options are important, many on this board are happy to spend the night on one of the dance floors, but most of us need a break ( and if its a good year to spend a couple of hours gushing over someone - hopefully our bf!) how do others feel about these issues? it is after all a fund raising event....
sailorboy - Wed Sep 30 18:50:31 1998
I wanna get f***ed under the mirror ball ... is it still there?
synner - Wed Sep 30 21:12:22 1998
Could someone please tell me why the party committe will only select DJs on the basis of submitted tapes? With the right equipment its very easy to put together a well mixed tape. If the party committee know what sort of music they want in each hall, why don't they also approach DJs who are good at playing that aprticular style? Probably because the party committee know very little about dance music. (Heard the rumour that when approached by the managers of both Frankie Knuckles andTtony de Vit to play at last years Mardi gras, the committe asked them to submit demo tapes!!!!)
Its Time - Wed Sep 30 22:21:12 1998
I have every intention of trying to get on the party committee. And his boyfriend is Richard Cobden.
Nat - Wed Sep 30 22:25:52 1998
Speaking of which — why would one choose Warren Gluck, who was okay but very cheesy, above so many Aussie DJs capable of playing to the RHI crowd. Ah, there's a story there too isn't there RC.?

JAG - Thu Oct 1 11:33:15 1998
Wow, that offer doesn't warrant a reply JAG, for a whole lot of reasons, (two of which are that Viagra is a prescription medication and anyway 4 tabs retail in a pharmacy for less than the price of one ticket). On another subject, I was interested in sailorboy's comments - please can we have bleachers back in the halls for sitting and resting where you can watch the dance floor, and please, please some kind of stages/podiums to dance on - both so that there is a maximum choice of party experience?
Fastlove - Thu Oct 1 11:48:07 1998
Mardi Gras continually ignore the request for adequate seating in the halls. They seem to think that if people want to sit, they should go outside. Some of us like to sit and stay inside.
Thu Oct 1 13:28:12 1998
So do we have a definite on who is performing at SLeaze this year? Someone please help!
Curious - Thu Oct 1 13:51:23 1998
Hopefully 15000 fabulous gays, dykes, trannies and their straight friends will be performing. This is the best show.
Kylie herself - Thu Oct 1 14:09:04 1998
Sorry Curious, only fab rumours on performers here. But is there a definite answer from someone on seating in the halls? Are there reasons against seating - like lowering hall capacity, too high extra costs, the dangers (?) of bleachers, problems with circulation? If there are no good reasons for doing without them, it'd be great to have them back...
Fastlove - Thu Oct 1 14:14:38 1998
Opening show is Horny. All boyz. Kate Ceberano is the main attraction (90% sure, but don't slap me if I've been misled). Mary Kiani MAY be performing, but MG were umming & ahing about that. Okay? That should keep you happy, and in any case you'll be too far gone to care about the rest. Have fun. Wish I were going : (
Deep Throater - Thu Oct 1 15:54:56 1998
So, the SSo now tells us it was "tricked" by the Madonna rumour. Please! What sort of deal did they do with Mardi Gras to run that one and give ticket sales a massive boost. And just how gullible are people.
Thu Oct 1 21:09:49 1998
Theres no seating cause it takes up room. They like to cram in as many people as possible (and sell as many tix as possible). Oh for the Hordern before they took out all the seating. These parties have never been quite the same for some of us since they stripped they sacred dance place. (Kate Ceberano and Mary Kiani - should we be getting excited about that - at $78 a ticket!!!).

This will be my first Sleaze Ball alone. My boyfriend of 12 years died from an AIDS related illness in May this year. I know he will be there in spirit. The party is a celebration in so many ways - not least being a celebration of the lives of those who are no longer with us. I will take some time out during the evening to reflect on many of our precious Sleaze memories. But I also look forward to the future. I feel privileged to be part of the wonderful diverse gay and lesbian community in this truly great city. Guys and gals, celebrate with pride who you are and what you stand for. Have the most fabulous evening of your life.
There is nothing we cannot achieve - Fri Oct 2 16:59:46 1998
This party looks f*cking fantastic. It's twisted, and starnge, and Weird. Anyone who misses this party is going to miss a special party. It even sounds great. To stand alone in the middle of the RHI whilst they are doing sound checks is just one of the most amazing things to hear. It sounds sooo Big and beautiful. I could feel the music reverberate all the way through my body! The lights are very simple, but what that acheives is it brings out the fantastic new ceilings which are an amazing feature of this party - we couldn't have asked for more appropriate ceilings. Yes it is raw, and rugged, but it all adds to the feel of this party.
Happy Sleaze - Fri Oct 2 17:43:06 1998
Back from my Northern Venture and god, every morning I wake up, Sleaze is on my mind. I too love the dancing podiums, (for myself when completely free of inhibitions, and dancing with people in a fun, weird party type thing. Have a grat one everybody and if you see a guy with a mirror ball necklace, say hello. Welcome to Sydney (doing a Brisbane impersonation with the weather), Brisvegas. See you where we arranged and may the party gods be kind and shine in your direction.

Sun Oct 4 2:40:55 1998
I'd give it 6/10. Male and female only spaces were a joke, they have to put more seating in the halls, and sound quality was poor. Music in Dome was shite but for me, I enjoyed the RHI from 2.30 til 4 for the first time in years. Last DJ in the Hordern was superb!!!
Nat - Sun Oct 4 8:24:26 1998
I had a faaaaabulous party. Not the best Sleaze ever, but up there. Who needs international artistes anyway.

James - Sun Oct 4 16:28:10 1998
Yeah yeah, nice to hear, but was there a live act?
Sun Oct 4 19:08:23 1998
I agree with the 6 out of 10. I had a really great night and enjoyed the new roof. I didn't have a problem with the sound quality, though it changed depending on where you were dancing. The last RHI DJ was great, and I loved the opening of the 4am? set in the hordern with Jesus Christ Superstar. I caught all the shows except for one that apparently had a drag queen being led around. Can anyone fill me in on who she was, what was the song etc. Nobody I asked seemed to know. Well Brisvegas, I danced alot around the 3rd pillar from the front RHS in the RHI but didn't meet up (was that the one level with the front of the stage?) Unfortunately my mirror ball necklace was removed by a roid monster who in trying to admire it, didn't know his own strength and ripped it off. Thanks a lot for that! I was restricted to carrying it in my hand in an attempt to still meet up. Met a lot of wonderful people and had some great sleazy + weird dances. My only complaint is that for the second year in a row, when totally destroyed, the same leather man with a bone through his nose trys to give me a physical. Sorry Sir, but you really freak me out, hence my sudden departure. Get rid of that bone thing and I'll dance! Thanks also to the wonderful people at the front of the RHI who cleared a path quickly and with no hassles for me when carrying a passed out female off the floor. I don't know who she was, but one minute having a dance with her and her g/friend, the next a thud at my feet. I would like to think that it was my charm and sexiness that made you drop, but I have a pretty strong feeling that the heat and medication may have played a significant role. "ego squash" . Also, to the boy who wandered past, pinched my butt, gave me a back massage and a mean kiss in a nanosecond, that was good. It took me about 10 minutes (or was that 3 hours) to stop laughing at the look we gave each other after that. Now for the hard part. How to remove all this glitter before Tuesday.
Mark and I'm sorry but I'm straight - Sun Oct 4 19:26:20 1998

"What's she going to look like with a chimney on her?" (Feel It by The Tamperer
Panther - Mon Oct 5 10:35:49 1998
Shows: midnight Boys and some drag queen playing Mr Squiggle in a dick shaped rocket doing Horny Horny Horny Horny Horny. I loved this show, really fun. 3am: Girls doing a Prodigy song In a straight-jacket, attacked by nurses and they break free! 5am: Robbie Robot carrying a drag queen around the dance floor to Dannii's Everything I want. Watched one of the arms of the robot loose control. Lovely robot but the show ranks with the drag queens in hoops at MG. Closing: Pauling Pantsdown doing a new mix of I Don't Like It with a dozen other Paulines. In the end they blew up an effigy of Ms Hanson. First time for ages I happened to see all the shows.

There were sound problems in the RHI, if you were near the edge there was a terrible echo(?) of the beat which made it mushy and out of time. I couldn't dance to it, though lots of people could. I think the lack of ceiling absorbing the low frequencies caused this. Roof looked fantastic though. So I went to dance in the Horden and *loved* Mandy Rollins until she cranked it up to 9000 bpm and I couldn't keep up.
Panther - Mon Oct 5 10:55:49 1998

Why do I always have to post a pic to get any messages posted since last Monday. Anyone else have that problem?
Speechless - Mon Oct 5 12:27:09 1998
I don't think you're "straight" Mark. I think the term "queer" fits you perfectly and as far as I'm concerned, guys like you are welcome at these parties as much as any gay or lesbian. As for Mandy Rollins Panther, I loved because she cranked up tye bpms to about 9000 (well, 150 maybe).
Not so speechless - Mon Oct 5 12:33:45 1998
What a briltastical sleaze. I loved the school fete atmo outside. My old Sister Estemia would have loved it, sampling all those home made treats.
Jamis 1 - Mon Oct 5 13:59:30 1998
Did anyone notice there were a lot of devils this year? Is that because of the theme song "horny horny horny"?
Jamis 2 - Mon Oct 5 14:07:49 1998
In hindsight I think the sexperiment was a good idea, harmless and inintimidating to everyone else. Pity the facades were a lot more inviting than the reality. Kind of like a cheap fairground ghost ride. The spaces might need their own lighting, maybe some seating, and some groovy decoration. Maybe make the walls lower - about 6ft - so the whole sleaze atmosphere still permeates.
Jamis 3 - Mon Oct 5 14:12:06 1998
We couldn't find the dome - and no we weren't that far off our faces.
Jamis 4 - Mon Oct 5 14:14:11 1998
I thought the DJ's did a pretty good job considering the echo probs. You know, the shows get the best songs. Half the joy is hearing a song you really love. Wouldn't it be great if one Sleaze they did a string of all the songs that had been used in the shows over the years. How nostalgic that would be...sigh.
Jamis over'n'out - Mon Oct 5 14:22:28 1998

Thankyou for the vote of support "Not so speechless". Straight covers such a wide range that I consider myself to be well over one side of the spectrum though still within the bounds (never really liked tags anyway). I have a lot of G+ L friends, love partying with both sexes and look forward to Mardi Gras and Sleaze like the world revolves around these events. The Gay and Lesbian Community knows how to throw a party and have been doing it so well, so camp and so different for years. Undoubtably this wall will close soon, so thanks Panther for the use of your excellent facilities, I'll return around February next year for some pre MG gossip/trash/fun/..... I've said enough once again. so ...... Have a good 6 months everyone and you wouldn't believe who I heard was playing MG 99.

Well, what a night it was, not normally one to complain but here goes, wasnt it a little too hot this year, I think ventilation needs to be fixed, also loved Mandy rollins set, original, very funky stuff, pity she is a bitch with a bad attitude.
Tue Oct 6 11:46:57 1998
Best straight party I've been to in years. With the occasional gay man.
Tue Oct 6 11:58:01 1998
Party was OK...I didn't enjoy it as much as last year but it could have been because I was E-ing and the BF wasn't...we were in totally different head spaces all night. So I ended up getting led around like a zombie all night wondering what the hell was going on...BF, however, has learnt the error of his ways and will never attend a dance party drug free again! (the reality is too upsetting...). I also thought the sound in the RHI was distorted (too bassy maybe??) and the music pretty average. Where were all our handbag favourites?? Where were the words to the songs we all know and love??? I wasn't my usual friendly self either and didn't really manage to connect with anyone all night...and to top it all off, when BF and I left at 4:30am he was too tired to give me a bit so I had to lie there and feel totally (and torturously) in love with him while I watched him sleep...Roll on Mardi gras I say. By the way Mark and I'm.... i was sorry we didn't catch up with you, but I think we were a bit further back from the front than you guys. Next year.

So what was Frisky like? Since all the gay boys had to grovel to get tickets I was wondering how straight the party was? Were the people there people who had been to sleaze or was Frisky their only party?
Wondering? - Tue Oct 6 18:57:36 1998
My scores - Sleaze 2 Frisky 9.99 (The record jumped in "The Love I Lost" - not the Sybil version - so not a perfect 10).
The verdict - Wed Oct 7 7:42:49 1998
Go Frisky!!!!!
Wed Oct 7 10:34:11 1998
Highlight of Frisky - seeing Lexie Bradfield (dyke DJ) partying with all the gay boys. I don't think Warren G is her cup of tea, but she was having a fine time. Coalition lives on !!!
Luv ya Lexie - Wed Oct 7 11:32:10 1998
frisky was just a lame "jamie & vanessa" with lamer music and no jamie and vanessa
punters have a voice to promoters - Wed Oct 7 12:40:42 1998
Heard a rumour that Ticketek did not control re-entry into the party. The tickets were left intact when you first went through the turnstiles. The trick was to get a ticket from someone else already in the party. You left the party with two intact tickets and got your 'pass out' band. Give one of the intact tickets to a friend who could then enter the party. You then reentered the party showing your band and the other intact ticket. 3 in for the price of 2 !!!!
Good one MG and Ticketek - Wed Oct 7 14:19:28 1998
I've heard the same scam rumour as well. Though I was told you only needed one ticket when you left and two people could get back in. I've also heard there were over 800 duplicated bar codes in the computer, which indicates the extent of the scam.
The rumour was probably started by some queen still tripping (we hope) - Wed Oct 7 14:39:44 1998

Frisky was Fabulous!! best party for years, lights music, even a little chill out cinema, what about "hoplessly devoted to you" towards the end, just as i was peaking....10 outa 10
great one frisk - Wed Oct 7 23:46:23 1998
Well I thought it was the straighest party I've ever been to. Where were the lesbians & gays? Most g&l I spoke to during the week didn't go. Of course, that means that someone else had to buy the tickets, or else MG wouldn't have the all important festival next year. Perhaps we should leave Sleaze to the straights, so we can cream the money off them instead of sponsorship.

Thu Oct 8 9:23:11 1998
Early estimates are somewhere between 14,000 - 15,000 tickets sold. That's well down on the 16,500 they had budgeted on. (No wonder David looked stessed on Saturday night.) It looks like the profit from Sleaze has fallen at least 35% from last year. By the time increased costs are added (I'm sure Fox or Playbill didn't through in the circus tents, fencing and extra security for nothing) total profit could have fallen by 50% or more.
I can't wait for the boards next press release - Thu Oct 8 11:03:28 1998
A couple of DJs saved the night for me. Thanks Luke Leal and Mandy Rollins. (Note to Mardi Gras - please please please could we have more seating inside the halls - surely its not too much too ask).
Technowarrior - Thu Oct 8 11:08:04 1998
I thought sleaze was gay enough and I thought the ticketing purchase and entry worked better than ever. This has finally been a step in the right direction. Mardi Gras will be the proof in the pudding however.
BND - Thu Oct 8 11:16:39 1998
Why were people, whose tickets didn't work when scanned, just asked to walk through? What happened to the guy at the gate with tens of tickets in his bumbag? How good is a "new improved expensive" ticket system if no-one uses it properly? (Remember they sold us out to put this one in)
Thu Oct 8 12:32:56 1998
It appears to me that alot peeps doing the big parties are trying to relive something (or an awful lot) of the past. This is the 90s... well, yah, I know, stating the obvious. A party where all the songs are from shows of old????? Hello!!!! And Warren Gluck fabulous because he played near nothing from this decade???? Shit guys... bring yourselves into the future. Explore something new. You may enjoy!!! Stop clinging to the past and trying to drag us down with you!!!
*fun*keeBoi - Thu Oct 8 14:39:06 1998
Lilly White: I find your condescending manner laughable, especially since you are trying to deride other people (in a pathetic manner) and in the process exposing your moronic ignorance. "Do people who 'apply' tans on the day of the party so desperate to look like that because they think that it will illude people into thinking that since they have a tan they must have 'a body' too?" I have yet to be "illuded" by someone wearing a fake tan, or an "applicator" as you call them, as far as i know, I will never be illuded. Obviously you have. I'd better be careful or you might "illude" me too. "It just has to be said. Why do people insist of applying fake tans to go to parties?" "It just has to be said", does it? Hello!!!, someone should get a life right here-->. "You can always pick the 'applicators' at the end of the night, because their 'tans' have gone patchy, and mostly turned a sickly yellow/green!" <----a life should be got here too. BTW, as you leave home at the end of the night trying to "spot an applicator", we are spotting dickheads. (I bet I have seen you many a time). "If it's that important that you look 'so hot', why don't they go to the least bit of effort and be a tinsey bit imaginative." Hmmm, a *teensy* bit of effort is what the original problem is (according to you) perhaps they should have gone to a huge amount of effort to "look good". Unlike you, not everyone lives a deluded existance vicariously through the night club scene. BTW, you know the difference between applicators and morons? An applicator's skin patches are temporary, a moron's idiocy is not. I know which one I'd prefer to be, and which category you fall into. Get a life, and a personality!
Lilly is a Moron! - Thu Oct 8 16:48:36 1998
I thought Sleaze this year was pretty good... People who say it was too straight obviously can't remember past the last party because it was much gayer than any other recent Sleaze Ball. The music was good (especially in the Dome) and the last set in the RHI was fantastic - dancing in huge throbbing hall at 8.00am on a Sunday morning... what better way to pass the time (hehe). The shows were good too (too true whoever said who needs international guests although my predictions re:Kate Ceberano and Dana International were way off). Anyway Happy Sleaze everyone!
funkatootle - Thu Oct 8 18:31:04 1998
Here's what I heard from a board member on Sunday morning. People were getting passout bands, leaving the party & re-entering. They then cut off the passout band & put it in their pocket. They got a new passout band, left the party again & sold the other passout band to someone who then used it to gain entry.
maybe an arm stamp should have been used as well - Thu Oct 8 20:16:16 1998
So now is the time people to put words into action and volunteer your help for the Mardi Gras party. Lets all make it the best party ever.
Nat - Thu Oct 8 20:21:11 1998
I'm with you *fun*keeBoi. I've already sung my praise (further above) for two DJs at Sleaze whose music was some of the most progressive I've ever heard in the Horden or RHI at a Mardi Gras or Sleaze party. Hearing the brilliant trance track "1998" by Binery Finery in the RHI at around 3am was the moment of the party for me.
Technowarrior - Thu Oct 8 20:28:58 1998
Here we go again - techno versus handbag. Never the twain shall meet. Techno in the Hordern, Handbag in RHI (or vice versa). It's so simple really.
Vote 1 for handbag - oops the election is over - Fri Oct 9 7:48:17 1998
Handbag was sorely under-represented on the night so all of us who love having a few words in the songs couldn't help but leave feeling a little disappointed! Vote 1 for handbag (or house at least!)
Fri Oct 9 8:16:49 1998
I agree - Handbag does it for me (especially the classic ones) and they should have had more of it in the RHI - hopefully we will get some at Mardi Gras 1999!!!!!

Urgh. It's that dreaded Hordern flu. Its almost enough to make me wonder whether its at all worth it.
But I'll be back at Mardi Gras party - Sun Oct 11 7:59:44 1998
I'll be back: Dose up on vitamins the week before and then start taking them immediately after the party again to keep those colds and flus at bay. Echinacea + C is a good combination.
Sun Oct 11 11:23:21 1998
Hordern Flu!!?? LOL. Luv it. And what about Dome Throat and RHI Fever?

Mon Oct 12 16:00:05 1998
Damn damn damn. I wanted to hear Binary Finary all night - who knew I had to be in the RHI to hear it. Made up for it though with the first DJ who played El Nino about 1:30. Still - would miss the RHI again to hear David Morales "Needing You" in the Dome.
Despite the trend, I had a great time - Mon Oct 12 18:50:24 1998
Thank you, thank you thank you, 'Lilly is a moron' I just could not have put it more eloquently myself. I Sleaze - I wear my fake tan, I feel georgeous, oh and gosh did I mention I am not the 'perfect' bod, but Sleaze it's all about attitude honey, it's all about fab times and of course about acceptance of all kinds of glam, amazing, different, exciting people. I hope you find your equally shallow and misled match Lilly, as I am convinced it would be quite a miserable thing to be you!!

I'm just getting home from Sleaze now. My feet are like a pair of f**king led boots and my head is singing "don't let go". I've never slept in so many gutters in all my life. After Sleaze in Sydney I somehow ended up at Sleaze in Cairns the following week. Uncomparable events but I thought they were both brilliant. I wanted to have a fantastic time in Sydney and I did. Oh and I didn't wear fake tan either, mine was au naturale. However, it's traditionally of the bottled variety. Do what ya wanna do, be what ya wanna be.... What was the story with the dome though? It was funk'n'groove when I stumbled through the door at about 5'ish. I thought it was great but was very surprised that it wasn't much harder. The best part of the night for me was falling in love. I fell so in love with the most gorgeous glow-stik in the whole wide world which meant all those wonderful lights the Mardi Gras party people supplied were wasted on me. Sorry Mardi! 'Bluey' (as i've affectionately named him)and I are now working on developing a serious relationship and we're hoping we can last through 1999 together. He's curled up in my fridge right now. Oh what a hunk! What a man. When I look at him I feel so horny, horny horny...

I may be a only a young gay bloke (21) but will you guys ever get over the fact that there will always be straight people at gay parties. It basically shows that the straight community and the gay community are growing closer. I am gay and i would have loved it if more of my straight friends had of been able to come to sleaze. Maybe it is just that some of you guys out there are just to old or stupid to realise that things are changing. Now to sleaze - thought it was great - a little to hot in some areas but i guess thats waht sleaze is all about. I also agre that a few more seats arouns would be a nice idea. Congrats to Luke Leal and Mandy Rollins! also to Alan Parkinson - Lights in the RHI.
Brad - Thu Oct 15 16:22:41 1998
Brad, It's not straight people that we don't want at our parties. It's Homophobes. Unfortunately alot of us have been abused by homophobes at our own parties so tend to get quite upset that once again we are not safe. When you get abused by a homophobe at one of the parties (and you will - it's only a matter of time till your turn comes up if things keep going the way they're going) you will also change your mind about whether straight people should be allowed into our safe places. Unfortunately for us it is our own community who are letting these homophobes in. Some people in our community do not care who they sell their extra tickets to as long as they make their profit - at the expense of the entire community. I personally think that we should adopt a new ticketing system in which invited guests must pass through the gates with the member that invited them as a sort of sign in like they have at Rsls and Leagues Clubs. That way the members will be less likely to sell tickets to people they don't know (seeing as they will then be responsible for their guests).
Jono - Fri Oct 16 16:23:48 1998
umm...excuse me Brad and johno...but I'd like to correct you both. We want neither straights nor homophobes at our party. One of the main aims of the Gay and Lesbian Mardi-Gras is to hold a couple of celebratory events per year that are exclusively Gay and Lesbian. It has nothing to do with not wanting to socialise or associate with straights. We do that every day of the year and in so many different ways. We acknowledge that we couldn't have come so far in our struggle for equity and recognition without the support of our straight brothers and sisters. However, for two lousy nights per year we want to have an event that is exclusively ours in celebration of our own diversity and sexuality. Just us and no-one else, just twice! There is nothing anti-straight about that is there? Oh and Johno, I like your idea about the ticketing system. To glowstick-boy: hope your romance hasn't faded out! : )
free gay and happy - Fri Oct 16 23:45:02 1998
Well said Free Gay and Happy, though it seems it is FAR too much to ask that we have those two nights a year.
JJ - Sat Oct 17 4:40:26 1998
So most people seem to think that Sleaze Ball this year was very average. $78 is a lot to pay for an average party. If Sleaze Ball is gonna last, thay are going to have to do better than that. Isn't it time to give someone else a go Gary Leeson? Is your ego not too big to allow for that?
Technowarrior - Sat Oct 17 10:13:32 1998
You can only speak for youself f g & h - so cut the 'we' bullshit. You may not want straights at the party and you have every perfect right to that view. However, don't pretend to speak for anyone else and definitely not for the 'community'. Your view is not in line with the official Mardi Gras statement on this. With every party, Mardi Gras extends an invitation to members and their guests. Each member is asked to act responsibly in the choice of their guests. However, there is no request from Mardi Gras that the invitation should not be extended to straight friends. The expression 'community straights' seems to have evolved to meet the description. Correct me if I am wrong, but Mardi Gras has never never never stated that the two parties are 'exclusively gay and lesbian events'. Gay and lesbian celebrations yes. I have on a couple of occassions invited who I consider to be a suitable straight friend to the party. I do not feel that I have acted irresponsibly in the choice. If by my making such a choice, this has somehow detracted from your party experience, then I feel sorry for you.
PC - Sat Oct 17 10:22:12 1998
I'm with you Brad, and I'm in my thirties. People are just going to have to accept that there are going to be straights at our parties. Mardi Gras have done everything possible to cut down on the numbers coming. So long as gays and lesbians are the majority and those straights there are enjoying the party with us, who cares! Get over your heterophobia people. I'm also with Brad on the sets played by Luke Leal and Mandy Rollins - loved 'em.
Technowarrior - Sat Oct 17 10:23:32 1998
Hey PC. You stand corrected and you ARE wrong. My view is in line with the official Mardi Gras statement on straights at the party. As an active member I have sat in on several discussion meetings around the topic and this view is the general consensus of the membership and has been the source of much discussion and debate over the years. You are obviously one of those queens that sit back and bitch at other people but never get involved enough to know what's really happening out there. My view (I'll claim it for myself if it pleases the likes of you) is definitely not heterophobic (as technowarrior put it) and I've never sought to be. Further, I was attempting to put my view across in an educational and polite manner so your 'catty' response is totally unwarranted! I strongly suggest you do your homework before shooting your mouth off! My party experience has never been detracted by the straight element because I refuse to allow it to be so but I'm prepared to sacrifice a couple of nights out with my numerous, and wonderful, straight friends in support of an exclusively Lesbian and Gay event, regardless of how much I would love them to be there. Thanks for the sympathy but I'm grounded enough to not need it.

Free, Gay and happy - Sat Oct 17 16:08:23 1998
This all may sound sematical but I think Free, Gay and Happy has misrepresented the MG position on straights at the parties issue. The likes of Bev Lange and her predecessors have never in my recollection made a statement either in the press or at a community meeting to the effect that all straights are not welcome at our parties. Statements about maintaining the integrity of the parties, straights you are not guests of members and undesirable straights (hompohobes etc) come to mind. But a blanket exclusion of all straights - no I don't think so. Anyhow if David McL or any other board member happens to read these comments, then a clarification of the official line would be appreciated. To Free Gay & Happy, stay just that and don't let the bastards get you down.
It's all in the words - Sat Oct 17 17:43:49 1998
I'm with F,G & H regardless of what Mardi Grass says. Why the hell can't we have our party just for us poofs and dykes? And why is the suggestion interpreted as being an anti-straight gesture when it isn't? There's so much pressure to have a men only space and women only space when I really just want a chance to truly experience a gay and lesbian only space.
Boodies - Sun Oct 18 0:01:11 1998
Because some little gay boys can't go out without six giggling straight girls on their arm. Why don't they get some lesbian friends and save us all a lot of space?
Sun Oct 18 19:36:50 1998
Average party??? Each and every party is only as good as you make it, I have been to the last 5 big parties and thoroughly enjoyed each one, and truly do not understand all the criticism, maybe Im just easily pleased or maybe its because I go to the showgrounds with the right attitude ?? For all the whingers next time why dont you just buy your ticket and go to the party expecting nothing, talk to a few people, wiggle your butt a little and smile a bit, Who Knows - you might just enjoy yourself
