Are you all muscle with a six pack to die for? Do you prefer to make people laugh? Are you ready to take control of all three rings?

See you all under the big top hat on Saturday 29 September.

I don't know - is it a good line up or not? It's the most puzzling line up that I've ever come across. Assuming that Rob Davis, Feisty & Steve Sonius are in the Dome - maybe one other? But Rob Davis could just as easily be in the Hordern (as per last year) except that I can't work out who he would he be b2b with? Hope that Feisty is in the middle for a bit of grungy energy. Certainly not an equivalent line up to last year's Dome dream team. Combination of trance and house in the Hordern? Hope that there's a lot of people in Sydney who are open minded to hearing both on the night. I'm not sure I get all this b2b work - someone appears to be a fan of it . First Get Together and now Sleaze. Best of luck to everybody and I sincerely hope it works on the night.

Back to back can go back in the shed
The whole back to back concept is a shameful way of getting more DJ names on the bill.

What next ? Do we follow the lead of straight dance parties and have DJ's play 30-45 minute sets ?

God i hope not.

Back to Back DJ's is treating the paying customers with disrespect in my opinion.

More back To Back issues
Oh and one more thing re back to back DJ's.

Wouldn't it be expensive ?

NMG would have to pay the hourly rate for both DJ's in a back to back arrangement.

Surely nobody expects to only get half pay because the DJ work was spilt between two DJ's in the same set ?

In times where NMG is trying to save $'s paying double DJ fees by employing 2 DJ's at once seems rather extravagant dont'cha think ?

NMG DJ Controversy , Yet Again !
Yes indeed. I've also heard about some rather unusual information regarding Tim Graham's selection. It seems odd that he be selected in the main room at Sleaze based on only one DJ spot at Mardi Gras in the so called "up and coming" space and also due to the fact that the guy holds no DJ residencies ANYWHERE on the gay scene.

All this on the back of the fact that he was one of the head guys on the NMG dj and party working group up until earlier this year. I'm doing some fact gathering today with some sources close to NMG and will report back with more info soon.

re: Sleaze DJs
Good to see Rob Davis, Feisty & Steve Sonius on the bill. As for the rest of the DJs, what ever happened to Sleaze having sexy/dirty/SEAZEY music?

Re:
Sleaze has NEVER had an exclusive selection of DJ who play this so called "sexy / dirty /Sleazy music". Sure Sleaze isnt as commercial as Mardi Gras but its never been 100% dirty music. You gotta cater to more than just one genre if you want the party to sell. Surely thats just common sense.

You want dirty - fine , enjoy Rob Davis, Feisty & Steve Sonius , they'll be right up your alley. The other DJ's will more than adequately cater to the rest thank you very much.

Oh , one more thing. To show that NMG isnt "Camping Up" Sleaze this year - TAKE NOTE - There is NO retro space this year at Sleaze. Stage 11's DJ's apparently have been asked to play what would normally be allocated for the RHI - ie Commercial and Hangbag Music.

As for me , well I'm not being catered to , so I wont be going. I'm sure Retro will be back on the bill for the 30th Anniversary party on March 1

scott anderson would have been a perfect trance dj for sleaze. new, fresh non girly trance. i agree, a shame trance djs such as him (who is a resident dj at beyond of all parties!) are not selected. how about mark alsop? another dj who plays at manacle and inqusition and has built a following over many years as a dj playing dirty house to a leahter crwod - also over looked.
who ever is putting these lineups together has a very limited idea of djs available - both in sydney and further afield - to the detriment of the party - imho.

Pinkboard is unable to verify this statement.

Tim Graham plays trance music well. He is a classical composer as well as massive trance lover. i think he is the best new blood in the scene and you´ll be surprised and happy to hear him.

unfortunately, the undersground djs, excepting feisty and steve are a bit of a loss.

as for B2B, funny how people think they have a clue. some djs are good at it, some are not. blanket rules are not really very good places to start criticisms when referring to music.

one of the best sets i ever saw was GROOVE ARMADA djing at Sublime on Pitt St around the time of I SEE YOU BABY´s release..... one track from Andy... wow, the next from Tom, bugger, he topped him.... over and over until we all hurt our jaws form smiling and ruined our dancing shoes that were guaranteed to last longer by the nice people at foot locker

feisty and mandy rollins ALWAYS deliver together. lanny k and miss yetti are a well established duo. be a bit ABBA and take a chance.... you might like something new:)

Re:
so what if a dj has sex or even loves another dj. you are doing an AD HOMINEM attack. an attack on the person. attack the substance! or is this the liberal/labour homepage?

as for tim getting a go in the main room, and comparing him to "experienced djs like ruby, stephen simpson" et al... maybe he is GOOD. maybe the other djs you speak of are not as talented. some people simply make an impact quickly, because they are talented! and correct me please, but weren´t 2 of the djs you mentioned also a couple!

i am not playing in this party, but i am happy tim is. he is a musician, dedicated to his classical side possibly longer than trance music has existed, a long time volunteer of MG, and a good guy with skills. what do you have to do in this town? win a nobel prize for trance music?

Interesting comments about Mark Alsop and Inquisition.

Last year at INQ the 4 DJ's who played in Stage 11 - Justin Scott, Shanobear, Mark Alsop & Ryan Murphy - all missed out on Sleaze 2006.

This year it's the same story with almost the exact line up of DJ's being overlooked. In the main tent this year at INQ were Shanobear, Mark Alsop, Sveta & Ryan Murphy and all missed out again.

Obviously Shano, Mark and Ryan have upset someone along the way.

Re:
Tim Graham doesnt have ANY regular work as a DJ anywhere in Sydney. As far as i know he has played one night at Arq on a slow Friday and hasnt played anywhere (not even once) in any of the other gay clubs & bars in Sydney.

How does one get to be chosen in the biggest and most popular space at Sleaze Ball when the party working group dont have a chance to hear him play "live" anywhere ?

The only answer to this question is that he must have been chosen based on the friendships he built up with others on the party working group during his time on this committee.

A DJ needs to do his dues as a DJ to be rewarded with a selection to one of the biggest gay parties of the year. To be selected in the manner in which he has is a huge kick in the teeth to all the hard working guys and gals who DJ night after night , month after month , year after year out there in the gay club circuit.

It's disgusting. I think everyone involved in this DJ selection should be immediately sent back to school and learn what good and proper morals are all about.

I don't care how good or bad he is as a DJ. He just hasn't done his dues.... yet.

This post is my opinion.

Re:
"We want new blood - We want new DJ's"

There is no disputing that fact. We all wanna see new DJ's come thru the system.

I'm excited by the selection of Murray Hood at Sleaze. A new DJ whose busted his hump working residencies around Oxford Street for the last few years. Sleaze will be his first full on DJ gig for NMG ** - I APPLAUD this selection.

Footnote ** I dont count Murray's performance in that up and coming tent he did 2 years back as the selection process for up and coming is different to DJ's for the main halls

Getting back to new talent DJ's - I think everyone just wants to see them come thru a FAIR system and not have a stench of nepotism lingering around the manner in which they were selected (i know you agree, dont you Noisy Gypsy). It also helps to make the DJ selection look semi fair if you have actually held down REGULAR week in week out DJ work on the scene - which Tim Graham has not despite Noisy Gypsy's claim the contray.

Fair go - give Tim a break for Christ's sake. Half of you whinge when there is trance and then where there IS trance, and it's going to be presented by a new DJ, you still piss and moan. Whatsupwiththat? All of this complaining and moaning on the party wall about old trance - and we get a new-ish trance DJ, and you lot still complain? No pleasing.

Good on Tim, I say. He kicked butt in the trance room at the last Homesexual party. He was great and I'm happy he's in the line up. Why do you people think it all has to be about the DJ's that have been around for yonks? Clearly the Sleaze team were looking for trance DJ's and found something in Tim that they liked. They WEREN'T looking for house/retro/etc DJ's. If any of you should complain, it should be that other trance DJ's who have been around for ages weren't chosen - not because your favourite electro/techno/whatever DJ wasn't.

Get over it.

DJ Lineup
Come on everyone, isn't it time to back off a bit? Instead of trying to tear down certain DJ's, we should be congratulating them instead.

Having put together a few parties over the last couple of years myself, I can tell you now by far the hardest part is selecting the DJ's.

Sydney has a huge number of talented DJ's to choose from, all equally deserving as each other and all capable of playing at the highest standard.

I personally think the DJ line up is bold and innovative. I'm very excited to see a number of my friends selected and equally excited to see some new names on the bill.

If you don't agree with particular DJ's being selected or if there's certain DJ's you think should have been there, write to NMG instead of airing your complaints in public on a forum not connected with NMG.

It's an exciting time for everyone who has been selected and they should be patted on the back instead of beinging singled out for critisism.

Re:
"If you don't agree with particular DJ's being selected or if there's certain DJ's you think should have been there, write to NMG"

Oh Shanobear, What a naive thing to say.

From my experiences history shows (and for proof you only have to scroll back thru page after page on this forum) that NMG quite often chooes to ignore letters , emails and phone calls when they are being critisised. In fact there's a strong history of critical feedback to NMG not even being replied to. In my opinion they have this "we are above critisism" mentality. Sort of like the Vatican. This is why people bring their beefs to pinkboard, And there's absolutely nothing wrong with it either.

If you choose to be a DJ then the reality is that you have chosen to do something in the public spotlight.

Just like our sports people , politicians , and TV and movie personalities a DJ too is somebody who is vunerable to public aclaim as well as public critisisms.

The old saying never rang so true - If you cant take the heat , then get out of the kitchen.

Or better still , dont read pinkboard ;)

This is my opinion.

Trance at Sleaze
I am VERY happy to see a new-ish trance DJ on the line-up for Sleaze. Yes, there have been quite a few people (me included) who have been moaning about how most of the established trance DJs on the scene seem to be quite happy to spin mostly old trance classics in their sets. I'm all for giving the young blood a chance to blow us away with some fresh new music. I haven't yet heard Tim Graham spin, but I've heard a lot of good feedback from a few people who have. So, I'd say give the guy a chance to show us what he can do before releasing the hounds on him.

As for the comments above about Tim Graham not having a regular weekly DJ gig. Maybe someone would like to tell me where the regular trance night on the Sydney scene is at the moment? That's right, there ISN'T one! In fact, there is not even a regular 3-4 hr set on one dancefloor in one venue on one night of the week which is dedicated to trance (or prog trance), as far as I'm aware (since Luke Leal rarely plays trance in his sets these days). I have been to all of the major venues in recent months and, if you are lucky, you might hear maybe a couple of tracks that venture into trance territory over the course of a night. That leaves only occasional boutique events on the scene, such as Homesexual, Toybox (which consistently uses the same small number of "trance" DJs), or the Ruby parties, if you are a new trance DJ wanting to "pay their dues". Then again, maybe he should just conform to the rest of the crowd and play bland commercial house week after week, just so that he can say that he has a weekly residency? ;)

Re:
... the AGM was held BEFORE the Dj's were announced
There were concerns about the DJ selection process well before the AGM with many people complaining about transparency. Theose people were then invited to become members and voice their concerns at the AGM.

It's not compulsory to be a member of NMG to have an interest in NMG activities last time I checked.
Expressing concern about a DJ selection process is actually having an interest in NMG activities.

Even if you/they are not a member of NMG you must know someone who is. Surely you can get them to ask your questions.

Maybe you and your (29?) friends can chip in and buy one membership. For a start you get discounts of $20 to each party. There are a number of other benefits such as the members area at parties and discounts at other events. I save well over $45 on my membership.

Bloody great idea they have now where you can opt for a pdf version of your ticket attached to an email confirming your purchase.

That way the ticket can be printed out just before you leave home on the night, rather than getting misdirected in the post, washed in your jeans, or lost at home somewhere.

And geez, $79 early bird price (then $119)... who knows when the early bird allocation will sell out?

The Theme
I'm excited about Sleaze, as always, and I'm sure the DJs will be fine, as always.
But this theme - yeeeeeeeesh. We had a circus theme for Sleaze back in the 90s, and a circus theme for a Pride party as well, not too long ago, and as I recall, niehter of them were a big hit, themewise. (Clowns are not sexy. Repeat: clowns are not sexy.)
Indeed, it's been a while since Sleaze has had a real cracker of a theme. Remember Atlantis, Homosutra, Beast and In Uniform? They were all great themes - sexy, funny, with heaps of room for interpretation for a costume.
Is it too late for NMG to reconsider, and opt for a fresher theme?

.
everyone who knows the industry must be appalled when someone who has been influential in choosing DJs for MG parties gets a prime spot at a big party.
it is disheartening for established DJs who work week after week, for years going from club to club, to see someone jumping the queue. let's hope they can rise to the occasion.

OH FOR GODS SAKE ..... Knock it off please.

The other DJ's will more than adequately cater to the rest of the so called "cheese" lovers who WILL be the MAJORITY of the punters in attendance.

This sort of post really pees me off. The sort of post that comes on here critising another poster without offereing any alternative opinion.

Debate the issue please rather than just attacking the other poster who is at least offering their opinion.

Your post simply makes you look even more foolish that the poster that you've decided to rip/shred/meow/scratch/bitch/whinge about.

Here's a comparison -

Kevin Rudd goes on TV and announces a new policy regarding (lets say) how much extra money he's gonna pour into our national road system if he wins the election. John Howard then gets on TV the next day and in response to Rudd's announcements says "Rudd is a whinger. He smells bad , has crooked teeth , bad dress sense and he has an ugly cat. Nobody should vote for me because of this"

Response to an opinion by attacking irrelvant side issues.

Its a politicians best weapon. And it seems the poster at Tue 7 Aug 2007 08:54:29 has this skill down to a tee.

Nope. But because of that I decided to get in quick.

I think the early bird will be removed when the (supposed) magic number of tickets sell. Then it'll be $120.

I think it's a great strategy... if there's a publicised cutoff date then there'll be a huge rush for cheap tix on the last day which simply reduces overall funding for the 2008 Mardi Gras season.

the djs selected should be those who will blow the roof off a room. so, they should be the ones who will deliver, ie they´re good. good does not mean they play 5 times a week.

Try to keep up with the arguments for goodness sake.

NMG HAVE scrapped the EOI process and did so a few years ago. Since then only a handfull of DJ's have been selected, some on the basis of who they know not how they perform.

This time for Sleaze, the "cirle of friends" have mostly been rested and finally some new blood injected.

You can rest assured that when the DJ's for MG2008 are announced, it will be the circle of friends again though. They're being rested for Sleaze so the party organisers can give his/her friends a higher profile event for the 30th anniversary.

The difference between private profit and community based non profit dance parties
Toybox, Homesexual etc are private parties run by individuals driven by the desire to make profit for themselves. They have every right to chose whatever DJ they want , there is no dispute there.

New Mardi Gras however is a *COMMUNITY* based , not for profit organisation that is answerable to its membership base and also the gay and lesbian community at large whom it represents. The ethos behind a community organisation should be that it embraces the concept of inclusion for ALL of its community.

The concept that everyone based in the community has a fair and equal opportunity to be included.

This is the reason why DJ's should be given the opportunity to at least express an interest to play at NMG community parties.

In my opinion the current selection process is highly secretive and does NOT embrace the concept of inclusion for all of its community.

It seems from my perspective that a new up and coming DJ who doesn't go out of his way to make friends with people on the selection committee has very limited (if any) realistic chance of ever being chosen

In my opinion the selection process is tainted and grubby due to the lack of transperancy shown by NMG

Re:
NMG is most definitely for profit. In fact, NMG recorded a profit of 150K in 2005/06. If it was unable to make a profit, NMG would quickly collapse, just as its predecessor did.

I frankly don't believe that implementing all the empty PC rhetoric about EOI's and "community inclusion" would make any difference whatsoever to the inevitable reaction that DJ selection announcements get from people - or the friends of people - who missed out on selection. The same tired accusations about lack of talent, nepotism, favouritism and sleeping with the selection committee would continue to be hurled, regardless of the selection process. That's the downside of "community" - eternal bitching, sniping and backstabbing

All I want is for NMG to hire the sort of DJ's who will make for a memorable party experience and I really have no interest whatsoever in how they do it.

Re:
There are lots of good arguments here at the moment for and against DJ EOI's. I guess the main factor that NMG is looking for is which DJ' are hot NOW and which DJ's will attract crowds of people, resulting in large numbers of ticket sales. Sure some people will go to a dance party not knowing who is playing, however in my honest opinion times are changing and most punters these days want to know who is DJ'ing before they purchase their tickets as the DJ's selected will influence their decision on going to the party or not.

NMG has to be realistic and look at the scene to see which DJ's are hot, who is packing in them into the other clubs and parties. By picking these people there are more chance of higher tickets sales and NMG being around to do more parties/fair days/parades and festivals.

I don't think the EOI process is necessarily going to help them find those people. A few weekends out on the scene in Sydney/Melbourne/Brisbane certainly will and from what I have heard this is now what certain volunteers and paid contractors are doing to find the right mix.

Makes perfect sense to me

Re:
"NMG is most definitely for profit. In fact, NMG recorded a profit of 150K in 2005/06"

Goodness golly gosh. What a foolish and uneducated statement the above is.

Of course NMG makes a profit. But the difference is that it makes it's profit simply to keep the organisation alive with no money being pocketed by share holders , members or owners. That's what a true "non profit organisation" is. One that generates profit but churns back 100% of that profit into running the business.

Reference / Definition from the Australian Tax Office website of what constitues a non profit organisation can be located here -

http://www.ato.gov.au/nonprofit/content.asp?doc=/content/24481.htm&page=2#P7_443

Thats what seperates NMG from the private parties like Toybox & Homesexual who are simply in the business to squeeze the pink dollar and bankroll their chosen lifestyles.

I think you will find those 99% couldn't give a rats arse how the party is organised so long as it turns out great.

You wont even give the guy a chance ! which is so unbelievable. I hope I never work with you or ever meet someone like you.

Could this have been a sly marketing ploy by NMG ?

Did they only put out on the market place a tiny tiny number of $79 tickets and now they are all gone ?

I wonder how many of the $79 tickets there were ... a few hundred at most ??

So now the feet draggers complain.

Just be lucky there WERE any first release cheap tix at all. After all, Sleaze is a community fund raiser not a marketing exercise.

This has been discussed time and time and time again.

Just because you have a ticket numbered 1,000 doesn't mean to say that tickets 1 - 999 have all been issued as well.

It simply doesn't work like that with the ticketing agencies

Re:
"Sooo checkout chick, how DOES the numbering work if it's from a computerised system"

I'm appalled this has to be covered yet again , but here it is for those that are too lazy to scroll back on this issue on previous walls.

Each OUTLET is given an allocation (yes , even electronically), and not all outlets receive equal allocations compared to each other - For example -

Ticketek Location #1 might have for sale ticket numbers 1 - 100

Ticketek Location #2 might have for sale ticket numbers 101 - 400

Ticketek Location #3 might have for sale ticket numbers 401 - 900

Ticketek Location #4 might have for sale ticket numbers 901 - 1200

and so on and so on.

In the case of the two posters above who both have tickets in the 900's , all that means (in the example above) is that you've bought two of the first 100 tickets sold from location #4. Locations #1,2 and 3 may not have sold one solitary ticket at the moment !

And so my lesson has ended. Rocket science wasn't it ?

However many were released, it was a great opportunity to save a bit of money by getting off your butt a little earlier than usual. If some people didn't do that, then I don't see how that can be blamed on MG... as Dr Phil would say "whose fault is that? Not miiine. (or Mardi Gras's). :D

So true, I got in early and bought my tickets.
Others just wank on whether to go or not and get left out with higher prices. Even if I had to pay higher prices it wouldn't bother me as I started saving my pennies a month ago. lets face it, even with lower ticket prices Sleaze is still expensive and needs loads of financial planning.

non profit
mardi gras does not make profits exceeding that which it uses to fund other initiatives. if mardi gras does not make a good quota, less funds come back to the community.

so, they pick the hot djs of now, and some long respected stars, and create a line-up designed to make you enjoy your night.

mardi gras party workers give generously a lot of their time. why would they wish to subvert their result by choosing untalented friends? give Tim and NMG a break folks.

go to the party with open ears and fun in mind. judge fairly on the day:)

Re:
nd lets reverse the roles - You are the DJ and someone says they can help you get a big job............. Would
you say NO ? would you say you have to serve more time in smaller venues ?
actually that is exactly what i would say - to myself - if not out loud. And I did. I cant tell you how thankful I am that when I started out (and by that i mean in the first two years of working) that I made a deiberate decision to steer away from playing anywhere and everywhere an opportunity arose. I honed my skills and most importantly my crowd reading abilities and made my mistakes. Now I have my pick - and I play my slots well - as they should be played. Djs who jump the gun too early, no matter how good they are, or how good they or others think they are, generally end up burning out very quickly. There is no substitute for experience - and if this is his first dance party, coming off a background of no solid residency, i would be worried. Why? because Tims ability to read, predict and adjust his programming according to the crowds reaction is going to be severely limted, based on the fact he has had very little experience at doing this live.
Also, it IS a respect issue, as someone mentioned earlier. As a dj you are a part of a djing community. It's never all roses, but there are certain bounderies in place, and if they are perceived to have been crossed, you will lose that respect. Part of being a rally good dj is knowing when to work and when not to work. Perhaps an opening slot or in a smaller room would have been more appropriate? I think in the long term Tim has drawn a short straw here - i wish him all the best though.

How about the boys and girls that already bought early bird tix at non member rates?

$79 is still a bargain for a full on fun event (I can't wait) keeping it fair for the ones that committed early would be appropriate.

This way it takes care of issue of our partners accessing the member's area too.

I think it's a great one time move from NMG to attract and then keep a good proportion of the new member's for the following year.

And why don't the organisers of Toybox/Luminere (or whatever you want to call it) give a discounted ticket rate to NMG members hmmm?

In my opinion it would seem to be the right thing to do given how Toybox/Luminere piggy backs and profiteers on the same party weekend that New Mardi Gras has built up over the years.

Thumbs up to Homesexual for offering NMG members a discount.

Thumbs down to the Toybox/Luminere crew who don't.

Re:

There parties are sell outs or close to it. If I owned Toybox I certainly would not be giving away $'s. Usually those parties/clubs needing to boost numbers give incentives.

But just dont understand why you expect ?
Huh ? - Replies: 1, 2, add

Re:
It's simple really.

For decades Mardi Gras has built up a good will by turning the October long weekend into a traditional party weekend which also happens to be a fund raiser for our Mardi Gras festival each February. Then the Toybox's and Homesexuals of this world come along and copy Mardi Gras and piggy back on the good work done by Mardi Gras over the years. It's akin to stealing someones idea and profiteering off it.

At least Homesexual has the good manners and morals to acknowledge that without the existance of Sleaze on the October long weekend it would be just another average weekend. By offering NMG members a ticket discount they are helping out the G&L community who make this weekend what it is.

Toybox sees tourists flooding in to Sydney because it is Sleaze Ball weekend. They copy NMG , put on an opposition party , grab the pink dollar and run with it without even the slightest thank you to NMG or its members for putting into place the infrastructure that is the traditional October long weekend dance party experience.

If your going to piggy back on a community then you need to be seen giving back to that community rather than treating us like an enormous pink sponge.

HOW DARE YOU say my post has no credibility.

My opinion is just as valid as anyones.

Mardi Gras built up the tradition of the October long weekend. Others have now come in after all the hard work has been done and are bleeding and leeching on that good will. All the other parties on the long weekend are simply copy cats - You talk about having no credibility, then look no further than all of these copy cat parties.

Leaders lead. Sheep follow.

Mardi Gras is a leader. The other parties are sheep.

Re:
The Sydney Recovery Weekend phenomenon was certainly kicked off by the mega Mardi Gras/Sleaze parties (and the widespread availability of E from the late 80's, of course) but Recovery has always been about other community venues and events picking up on the extended partying opportunity that thousands of partygoers, a long weekend and the means to extend the good times into the early hours of Monday, offers.

Homesexual and Toybox are but the latest incarnations in a long line of Recovery party options over the years and let's not forget that the pubs and clubs always do a roaring trade on these weekends as well.

The reality is that many people see these weekends as three day parties. Others pick and choose the events they go to. You're right that Mardi Gras makes it all happen and it would be good if that was maybe more transparently acknowledged, but: you can't blame event promoters for giving the punters what they want.

Good post that one above... However,

Let us not in any way shape or form point the finger of blame at our regular pubs and clubs who do a good business on dance party long weekends. They deserve all the business they can muster. Afterall, These are the venues that are loyal to the G&L Community who are there providing us a service 52 weeks a year.

What gets up my nose are these other one off parties that leech off the celebrations of the weekend and profiteer off the G&L community without ever providing an *ONGOING* service to that community. Nasty money grabbers who in my opinion do more harm than good for the G&L community at large

Sleaze Ball 2007 – “Zirkus” - Open Auditions
Can you breathe fire, juggle, ride a uni-cycle, do magic?
Are you a little wacky, zany, extroverted?
Are you a street performer, circus type or just have a great show that you want people to see?

If you answered YES to any of the above then you should audition for one of the volunteer roving entertainment positions that New Mardi Gras currently has available at its annual Sleaze Ball dance party.

Sleaze Ball will be held in the evening of Saturday 29th September 2007 at the Hordern Pavilion, Dome and The Forum at the Entertainment Quarter, Moore Park.

Sleaze Ball is one of the largest gay and lesbian dance parties in the world, this year with an anticipated attendance of 8,500 people dressed up to the theme of ‘Zirkus’.

Open auditions for roving entertainers will be held from 12 midday on Sunday 2nd September 2007 at Brent Street studios, Building 101/102 Bent St, Entertainment Quarter (formerly Fox Studios).

If you are interested in auditioning please contact Nick Bozanic on 0421 556 727 to pre-register then come along and give us your best two minutes.

Entertainers selected will be expected to volunteer some time at Sleaze Ball and to work with the creative and management teams to ensure the creative brief for the event is fabulously executed.

The auditions are open to anyone and are a great way to meet new people and to get involved with New Mardi Gras. Please wear comfortable clothing and don’t forget to warm up!

Further questions please contact the Event Manager, Brad Wright on (02) 9568 8600 or via email brad@aztechevents.com.au

Re:
"Correct me if I'm wrong"

You're wrong. I don't think that DJ selection and roving entertainer open audition processes have to be identical. In fact, I can see good reasons why they might be different.

Let's hope that the entertainers eventually selected aren't subjected to the same unfair, anonymous trashing that some of the DJ's were subjected to.

Will you get off NMG's case !

DJ's pull in the crowds and so it is NMG's choice to choose who they want. Accept it.

Performers dont pull in a crowd, they will entertain the crowd. Hopefully giving us " Ooooooh " moments. Also as they are probably scattered all over Sydney or Australia then its not as easy as popping into you local pub/club to hear the DJ play.

So give it a rest will you. Accept the way things are being done. Show your disgust by not attending Sleaze.

The numbers in the end will see who is right and who is wrong.

Re:
"It really is quite irresponsible of New Mardi Gras not to release this information so close to the party date in question"

Oh please... you know who the Dj's are. All dance events these days slowly release information over the weeks leading up to the event in order to create interest and spur ticket sales. Case in point Toybox haven't released set times yet either (how irresponsible of them).

With 4 weeks to go I wouldn't normally expect to get this information until a couple more weeks. That being said I think you'll have your answer sooner.

Does anyone else share my fear that the hordern could be very musical disjointed all night. Not only do we have a range of very different sorts of music but we also have three DJ's battling against each other in the middle of the night. I'm sure the guys will all try their best to make sure it flows but ultimately when you play with fire something like this 3way DJ set seems to be doing then things might be a tad bumpy.

Look , I hope it works , and I know the DJ's are professional enuff to try and make it work but I just have my doubts.

However - I look forward to be proven wrong on the night but wont be surprised if I'm not.

Countdown boy makes more of a contribution to this wall than anyone. Havent you thought for one single moment that the more you whine about it means CB will just dig his heels in and make the posts longer and longer. Sometimes keeping quiet is the best remedy.

And what those poor widdle fingers of yours that are just soooo sore from too much scrolling... Oh Pleeeease.

I cant believe people can be so petty asking for countdownboy to limit his posts. Havent you got anything better to do ?

I feel sorry for people who take offence in having an extra 0.5 seconds of their life stripped away by having to scroll an inch or so longer.

C'mon ... The world has Terrorism , APEC , the depletion of the ozone layer , war , poverty and disease and you're complaining about an extra scroll or two on your mouse each time you visit this wall.

Please people, lets put things into perspective.

You go Countdownboy. You go as long and as colourful as you want. You're a hero in my eyes.

You assumed ! and as usual , WRONG.

I can multi task and guess what I do lots more than just Pinkboard ( which I love ). I think the request to make countdownboys posts shorter was reasonable. It just fills the entire wall too quickly and for the bitches who say get cable etc there are a lot who cannot whether its location or the $'s so for them it just makes it much slower downloading.

slow
I dont think the countdown has anything to do with the slowness of this wall. There's just been so much on , so much to look forward to recently (and then there's also the over-saturation of Toybox/Luminere issues that we're all being hit with on the party wall)

One thing i do find amazing is how all the DJ's have gone quiet on this wall. In the last 3 or 4 years a lot of the DJ's playing at the parties have been active on here fielding questions (within the limits imposed on them by NMG of course) as well as taking requests.

So , I wanna hear from Justin Scott , Murray Hood , Dan Murphy and all the other DJ's playing at Sleaze who use and read this board. LETS HEAR FROM YOU !!!

What are you planning for your sets ?

C'mon , lets hear it.

But if the RHI ever comes back to it's former glory at Sleaze, with fabulous laser lights, magical music and thousands of friendly faces, I'll be there...third pylon in...right hand side...ah, the memories.

Look up
Hi all,

is the fancy lighting being designed and run by the same troops as last years Ssssleaze?
Is it Paul Marin and Richard Neville? In the Hordern last year I really enjoyed the lighting effects, the Dome was good when it was not too bright. Deep and dark music goes 'hand in hand' with good matching mood lighting. To me at least.
Lighting is an important ingredient in the party mix.

Are there any aerial props to enhance the lighting?

Lots of us like lasers, I'd rather have a number of single colour lasers than one full colour, in the hands of imagination it can be wow when you look up.

Have I missed a memo? Reading the Star this week, you'd never know that Sleaze Ball is on in two weeks. But - if you visit TNT's website (a site that caters to backpackers), straight backpackers are encouraged to enter a competion (in which NMG has teamed with TNT) to a win a double pass to SleazeBall (see http://www.tntdownunder.com/competition/760.html ). Go figure!

The Star Observer is no longer the media partner of New Mardi Gras... that role was recently taken over by SX. If you look at this weeks SX they have Sleaze Ball featured all through it. The Star have obviously decided not to cover it at all.

So go get the SX.

If SSO are so annoyed that NMG have taken the official media partner work across to SX that they stop reporting on Sleaze ball then they are simply NOT worthy of being called proper journalists.

But SX is not delivered any where near where I live. The Star has always been the paper of record in our community and for it not to even mention that Sleaze Ball is on - is a shame. The more powerful point is that NMG has 'teamed' up with a straight backpacker site and is encouraging people with little connection to our community to come to our parties.

Mardi Gras have announced the entertainment line up for Sleaze – well most of it – and things sound like they’re shaping up nicely.

Cosima De Vito will be performing, and will be joined by tireless Ring Master Ashley Swift as well as Zirkus’ Half Man / Half Lady, the stunning Miss Dallas Dellaforce. It’s sure to be a knockout show.

Human Nature’s Toby Allen will be setting the stage alight with a surprise special guest – honestly, you won’t see this one coming – you do not want to miss this show.

Forget the traditional format, it’s gone – this is Zirkus, so expect to see roving entertainers and happenings throughout the night. Get dizzy watching Bunny Hoopster and her hoola hooping team, let D-Vinyl and Lillian Starr entertain you! Keep an eye out for the blow up peep show. Watch amazing aerialists, creepy contortionists, firebreathers and girls bathing in glasses of bubbles.

Mardi Gras have coined this their “Greatest Show On Earth” – as a precursor to their 30th Anniversary festival events....

Vanessa Amarosi
From the New Mardi Gras website...

New Mardi Gras has secured the awesome talent of Vanessa Amarosi the internationally renowned Australian singer/songwriter to perform at Zirkus Sleaze Ball on September 29 September 2007.

It is hard to believe that six years have passed since the eight-time ARIA nominated Vanessa Amorosi released her debut album The Power, which sold over one million albums worldwide. Fresh from recording her second album Vanessa has agreed to appear at Zirkus Sleaze Ball much to the delight of hundreds of fans within the GLBTQ community across Australia.

At only 24, Vanessa has already achieved some amazing triumphs.
• Her debut album 'The Power' entered the ARIA Chart at #1 and went on to achieve Platinum sales.
• 'The Power' also spawned the Platinum single 'Shine' and the double Platinum single 'Absolutely Everybody', which still holds the record for the longest charting single by a female in Australia.
• Vanessa won the APRA Award in 2000 for Most Played Song on Australian Radio with 'Shine' and
• Received international acclaim in Germany where she won Best International Newcomer at the 2003 Viva Comet Awards.
• Vanessa opened the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, performing 'Heroes Live Forever' to nearly 4 billion viewers. She also took part in the Closing Ceremony where she sang 'Absolutely Everybody' and
• Performed 'The Power' and 'Shine' at the Opening Ceremony of the Paralympics, which was broadcast in 80 countries.

Prepare yourself for the power of Vanessa appearing on stage at Zirkus Sleaze Ball, Saturday 29 September.

"why does NMG management had never announce the performances time for each performance and the venue where they are performing ???"

Because if you announce the hall and time of the performances you get the majority of punters all trying to squeeze into the same space at the same time rather than having the patrons equally divided around all of the spaces. This then becomes a safety issue.

Womens Space, Again!!
I fail to understand the need for a womens space?
I had thought we had resolved this issue once and for all.
It appears that gender segregation is still a necessity for women who need to shelter themselves to feel safe. If these ladies feel the need to be isolated then may be it would be better that they stayed at home. NMG members need to hold a referendum on this matter. In this case, considering how hot the Dome gets they are utilising the outside area of the Dome, which is a great location in which chill out.

I can't say I remember being pushed or shoved by the boys. To be honest though, I'm sure it's happened, but I don't know that it's a matter of boys JUST shoving lesbians, I think people in general are pretty rough in that environment due to being on stuff and also it being so crowded, it happens inevitably I think. I think I've made my opinion pretty clear on Pinkboard about how I feel about a girls' only space... I do find it a little unfair that the boys don't get one as well... and yes, I'm well aware of the likelyhood of the boys turning it onto a sex space. :) I dunno... I spose I can see all arguments, they all seem pretty valid. I just personally don't get any joy from a women's space, but then again, I don't really get any joy from womens' nights either... I think I'm in the minority there though.

I just dont understand the segregation when its a night we are all celebrating. We have bars and as you say boy or girl only nights at venues for that.

Best if there is nothing special for one group as it causes complaints from others who feel they should have
a space etc.

Also right about it can a bit pushy ( not deliberately ) on the floor from all genders. When that happens we just move to a quieter spot.

A liar, eh? Charming. So because it's not YOUR experience - you refuse to believe it? Hmm.

I too have a mixed group of friends and I am a lesbian - and I don't like the separate space for myself either. That's just me (and jgirl it seems ;)). I am just telling it like it is. You can choose to believe it or not - I don't care. But to call me a liar is just a smidge outside the guidelines here and at the very least, downright rude.

For the younger or newer lesbians in particular, it can be EXTREMELY intimidating out there on the dance floor. You can't understand it? Fine. Good for you. Just let yourself see outside your world for a minute.

Or as Magda would say - I said pet, I said luv, I said pet. Look at it from my side (or at least the side of those women who feel the need for a space. Maybe the next year's party, they will have the confidence to brave the dance floor - like I did - and never look back).

If you think that the dance floor at sleaze/Mardi Gras is rough, you should try the mosh pit at a straight rock concert! Makes the gay parties look like tea party! Women aren't as explicit sexually, they are subtle. We don't turn our toilets into sex rooms, but we would like a small space of our own to stuff full of hot babes so we can feel sexy with one another. Just let it be guys - I'm suprised so many gay boys are upset by this need. The lesbians that enter the womens space are there to check out the talent - its nothing to do with segregation or anti-male sentiment. There are still plenty of surprises in store that Mardi Gras are keeping firmly up their sleeves. Who else will be lighting up the stage that night? The only way to find out is to make sure you’re there to watch it all unfold.

Happy Sleaze Ball!

Re:
Hello boys and girls,

I don't use the men's toilets (except member’s area toilets) because they are disgusting by the middle of the night. I don't want to skip around the used safe sex items. I hope to use a toilet that is reasonable clean. (Hope I can stay hydrated). I use one of the girl’s toilets for that reason. And yes I do leave it clean/tidy and technically I'm not meant to be there but we are all grown up and that's what doors are for. :)

My girlfriend loves going into the girl’s only space for short spells. I either join her for a little while or just leave her to her space. Not only lesbian girls are in there it's also the straight girls or bi or what ever.

There are straight boys, bi boys and most confusing for her boys that say they are gay only to want to get sexually physical when she has made it clear, no thanks. (Only a small percentage thankfully, but enough to make the night less enjoyable).
It's a nice option to have a women's space, she can wear her usual skimpy outfit be and feel sexy and we can both relax a bit more.

When there are more girls than boys going to sleaze, then we can ask for our own space. . . :)

Girls are more subtle. . . Go Girls

Re:
There have been many attempts to create a mens space at MG and Sleaze in the past. They never worked. Before the no sex at parties thing started to be enforced the spaces simply became a sex space which was ok for those who liked it. Further attempts have failed as most men seem to prefer to dance in the main halls. Let the women have a space to get away from the main party for a while. I sometimes feel squeezed out in some of the dance floors by the bigger guys.I imagine some women would feel the same and sometimes the dance floor does get very masculine! All those hot sweaty bods, I love it but I doubt I'd feel the same as a women lesbian or straight. Let the women have there small space at the party, we are welcome when acompanied by one anyway!

Re:
For the record the Mardi Gras website states

"...or the ladies who like it, you can rub shoulder-to-shoulder in a dedicated space- for you and your male friends- decked out in luscious, sexy Sleazy fashion, of course."

There is also a space for Members only known as the Members Lounge which is on the top floor of the Forum.

So make friends with a Lesbian or become a member or just enjoy one of the three main halls!

Oh and the website also states...

"New Mardi Gras are remaining tight-lipped about an exclusive female surprise in one of the main shows. You'll have to see it to believe it".

We have all had an instance of 2 where some aggro has happened but doesnt make us run to girl or boy own

If you are saying it has happened many times then sure I think you are being untruthful or maybe its your actions causing the problem ?

Re:
New Mardi Gras by creating a womans space but not a mens one is in my opinion participating in a very crass case of gender discrimination which i believe is against the law

Forget the old tired argument that mens spaces end up in sex spaces, that excuse doesnt wash anymore under the current regime at Fox Studios who would not allow a sex space to happen in the first place.

What im talking about is the PRINCIPLE that both genders be treated fairly and equally under the law. NMG in my opinion are flouting this law by not treating both genders equally.

A mens only space that would NOT be a sex space probably might not work at all , but at least give it a go if only to show that both genders are treated EQUALLY.

I'm sure that anyone who entertains friends from overseas has had this same experience - trying to explain to them that the women need their "space" at the party and men aren't allowed into that area beside the dome. It pains me to have to explain it, and in fact I try to avoid it and hope my friends won't notice or ask. Its so badly damaging our image, I do hope NMG will eventually listen to what seems to be the majority over this issue.

Re:
A few posts on this page does not account for "the majority" that you speak of. Men are welcome in the womens space accompanied by a woman. Get over it and let the girls have their own cruising space - its nothing to do with segregation. And consider that men out number women at these parties something like 5 to 1. Show me a dance floor that is predominantly full of girls and then you can argue about a mens space. Its about a fun sexy space for women. When will the whining end?

In 1997, Sleaze sold 22,000. Once you add comps, performers and volunteers, it was around 25,000. And in those days you had to be a member of an organisation that proudly called itself Gay and Lesbian.

Arrrr yes, Sleaze 1997. That was the Atlantis Theme party. It was also the infamous "dicks out at 1am" party (if you dont know what im talking about go back to the pinkboard archives of this party , interesting reading).

From a DJ'ing perspective I rate that party as one of my proudest moments as a DJ playing my set in the RHI that night. My God that was a huge party ! It's a sad shame things aren't like that anymore.

According to Pinkboards history page it was more like 17,000 and if you look at every year since it has steadily declined. The bubble burst, straight people got their act together, being gay became mainstream... and Mardi Gras has had to rebuild out of the ashes.

Sleaze may be smaller than 1997 but the quality is better than ever. Last years Ghetto Fabulous was a great party and every effort is being made on Zirkus to blow people away.

Cant wait.

Re:
People go on about the good old days when parties easily
had more than 20,000 and how parties are not what they used to be.

But back in the good old days there were only a couple of parties on for all of Sydney so at Mardi Gras and Sleaze you easily come close the 20,000-25,000 but it wasnt just the clubs that took punters away, the parties
themselves diversified for the straight and gay scene and if you pick up any Gay or Straight paper you can see that there are stacks of small to medium to large parties all catering to different styles of music.

So the party goers are still there and growing. They just dont pack into one party anymore.

Look at this weekend ? heapes of options. In the good old days it was mainly the Flinders and the Laneway where you went for a recovery and certainly not parties like Home or Luminere if it had been on.

However for Mardi Gras 2008 and the 30th Birthday etc, I have a feeling its going to be a massive party.

seriously??
reading i cannot help but shake my head and hope thatthe change to a warm mood fills the air in sydney this weekend. are people really squabbling about a tiny part of a venue that 99% of partygoers would never have even past, should there not have been another ATTRACTION added there? women rock, lesbians rock, men rock, WE WE WE ALL ROCK!!!

we are here, we are queer, and so far as i gather, it is not an area with free beer LOL.

i wish i could be in the postcode for this night, but it is not possible. think of people like me who miss the fun. think of people in far worse places, who will never have even have had the chance to know of such ways of life, and in such, to miss out. think of the brats that you have become and drop it, it really isn´t cool to be negative, and wrinkles are a bitch!

since i can´t be there, can someone else
-have loud and embarrassing toilet sex,
-lose their friends, and spend the whole night not really looking for them,
-stay glued to steve sonius´ sexy... beats,
-try to at least trip over on something and get laughed at (break a nail, heel or sunglass if you dare)?
-start a game of tennis outside the hordern door utilising only an imaginary set of equipment?
-wake up next to at least 3 women, wondering who the hell they are (female-male-trans applicants welcome)
-hug a person and say "i love you... man", or if not a tree

report all amusing incidents back here, for me and the african folks who missed out.

anyone caught elbowing a lesbian will be forced to clean toilets at all future lesbian events, at least until Sleaze 2017

Just back from DJ Soundchecks and show rehearsals around them. I have to say the vibe is awesome, the lighting rig very appropriate (nice Richard), the stage is stunning, more than enough laser heads for the Trance hours... and that's just the Hordern. Rob, Steve and Feisty will ensure the BKH (old Dome) has that good old dirty sexy feel that made the old dame of a venue famous. Everyone performing (meaning the music people) are happy, in a great mood, and ready to rock your socks off. I left watching a seriously full stage of performers rehearsing - looked great.

Don't miss this one.... and yes, I am biased, but hell, I'm honest about it.

Whatever you do tomorrow night, be safe.

PS. Oh yes, and Twilight Malibu Beach, at the Shift, on Sunday will not, obviously, be quite the level of production of our beloved Luminere/Toybox, but 5 full colour heads and 4 extra Subs should satisfy the die hards and this should sell out easily tomorrow.

OK, this year, I'm missing out - first one in ages - and I'm going to miss it bigtime. I didn't have any choice because, for me, it's all about the music and I'm sorry to say this, but the music on offer is just not good enough. Four hours of trance to take the party to the end may appeal to more people - rather like high-rotate commercial radio - but Sleaze has always been about cutting edge music, including eclectic mixes, which are just not evident in what is on offer tonight. A NMG party that doesn't utilise the skills of either Sveta, Seymour Butz, Gemma, Stephen Alkins and numerous other hard-working internationally recognised DJS is just not happening.

I just wish parties like Toybox/Luminere would put on parties on other weekends and not bleed goers from NMG. I would also then attend those other parties. I mean there are 50 other weekends they could do it and both NMG and the other parties could capture the most attendees they can.

I miss big NYE parties and the June long weekend Parties.

And to the other poster about no whinging re wooden dance floors.......... there is no more whinging cause NMG learnt their lesson a few years back and realise its a must for us :)

Re:
i think the argument being made is that sleaze ball (and most other mainstream mixed parties) are, in effect mainly a mens space. when you are on the danceflloor and 80 per cent of the people around you are male, that's a prettty good comfort zone. i agree, so what if the girls get a small area to themselves - guys have most of the rest of the party surrounded by (mainly) other men.

Re:
Hey Party, Party, Party

As someone who had chosen to go to Luminere this time instead and then had to do a fast turnaround when it fell through, I want to tell you why me and my girl chose that party, and Toybox previously when offered. First of all, we have been disappointed by the relatively lacklustre laser lights at more recent dance parties. As I am almost 50, I notice there is an increasing gap between the music I used to be turned on by and the music currently on offer. For me, the lights offer one way in to reach a great mood, bridging what is becoming an ever widening gap to allow me a great dance party experience. No/ minimal laser lights equals a harder time getting into the atmosphere - sometimes, not finding the atmosphere at all!! In contrast, Toybox and Luminere offer a fantastic mix of uplifting music (read: more familiar and easier to access for me) as well as fantastic lasers. If NMG can offer that sort of mix, I promise I will come back to the fold. I don't want to give up my dance parties yet, but, with advancing years, I need a little more 'help' getting into the groove. And I don't want that to mean more drugs! On the other hand, with Luminere folding, I say 'Yay!" and 'Thank God!' for Sleaze.

All the lasers that were going to be at the now defunct Luminere will magically appear in the Hordern but not until the trance djs start. From what I can gather they have gone from around 4 lasers to at least double that.
Now that makes me want to stay until the end of the party.

Yep great party.

Took me back to late 80's/early 90's with Bacchnalia /
Sweatbox parties where there was some extra design to the Hall ( Hordern anyway ) and little things to entertain us like the fire shows, the lasers etc. Sitting in the bleachers watching was like blast from the past.

Pity the dance floor in Hordern was shorter than usual as got to be a sardine can but that was because everyone was down on the dance floor. But not a whinge.

Thank you NMG , you've proved all the negative nellies
wrong in my opinion. The trance people seemed to be happy even though it didnt start till 4am but good to have some different styles otherwise way too repititive.

Great night.

Sorry did I step on you?
I won't be going to any more Sleaze balls. I can't stand the crush any more. It's like being stuck in a packed elevator for hours on end, can't dance, can't go out cause it's too cold, can't sit down anywhere, and some people should realise now that there's no smoking, they might need to pack on a bit (a lot) more deodorant. My poor guy left after 2 hours and we left at 4.

The music in the Horden, at least from 12 till 3, was hard, hard harsh, like some kid banging on pots and pans. The nightclub, as expected had awesome music, but it's not much use when there's nowhere to dance to it.

I think the people who attend are great, the set designs always interesting, and I have to commend MG on keeping the cost of tickets down. But if it means being jammed in and really uncomfortable for hours on end, I think I'd rather skip the whole affair.

The growing intollerance for loud music and large crowds is a common feature of ageing.

I'm mid 40's and cant stand squishy crowded areas anymore , when I was 18-35 I loved it, from 35-40 I tollerated it , but in recent years I've simply detested it.

I would suggest James A is just experiencing something we all go thru - growing old. Time to re-create your life my friend. Life after night clubbing and dance parties can be very satisfying if you allow it.

Re:
James A

I'm sorry you didn't have a nice time. I agree with the other person who suggested part of your reaction has to do with ageing. For myself, approaching 50, being female and measuring only about 5 feet four inches, I find I have to both 'claim' the space around me more (read, use my elbows a bit, wave my arms out, tap people to let thm know I'm there) and watch for other partygoers who don't register short(er) folk. One way to deal with this has been to persist and look for space where the music helps to get me into an expansive space instead of a contracted, defencive one. On Saturday night, the Forum was that for me. Yes, it was crowded there too. Yes, there are those godawful stairs and a relatively small dedicated dance space, but the music made braving the throng and the steps worthwhile. I also found lots of caring people, mostly men, who helped steady me when I was struggling down the steps, reached out and warned me that a step was nearby, and graciously moved aside when they saw I was trying to reach the dancefloor. One guy, also short like me, encouraged me to 'Push them all out of the way, darlin'!!' after observing my temporarily inefffectual diplomatic efforts at making my way through. Once on the dancefloor, people readily moved aside and made space for me and my girl, and I didn't have too many issues with elbows in my breasts or steel capped boots stomping on my toes. The only thing I would add to my wish list for next NMG party would be: can we PLEEEEASE have a laser light in the Forum too? I missed the lights, and going out to the Hordern to catch the amazing lightshow meant losing my mood as I didn't relate to the music or the crowd there at all.

All in all, thanks NMG for a fantastic Sleaze!!

Fab Fab Fab!
I never thought a Toby Allen/ Nikki Whatsername show would work but it was ay-mazing! VERY well produced and choreographed, very professional dancers and costumes, set and makeup. I don't mean to be nasty, but I couldnt tell if Nikki was fat now or if it was padding. Loved her performance.

To the squishees, I had a similar dreadful time last year but learnt to keep moving around. I actually spent most of my time in the dome because it was roomier, cool, and the music was consistent - no vocals! But the Hordern rocked as well. The staging, lighting and sound were fantastic.

All in all it was a great theme. Enough people dressed 'cirusy' enough to spread the theme, although shame on those who took their speedos and footy shorts!

Sleaze 2007 was the best I've attended. It seemed like a compact Mardi Gras, and I hope all the punters BUY a MG ticket next year so we can all continue the fun. Somehow I think they will :)

Security was wonderful... present but in the background. Volunteers were just great and having fun as well.

DJ's, well they brought SEXY back! I'm sorry for those who had to scurry over to the Forum, but Sleaze really is about sexy and dark rather than Top 40 commercial muscic, ya know. But they managed to have 3 halls playing 3 different styles to cater for most, which was FAB!

Thank you New Mardi Gras for bringing Sleaze Ball back to what it's supposed to be; fun, sexy, dirty, crazy, but above all FUN :)

Re:
"but Sleaze really is about sexy and dark rather than Top 40 commercial muscic, ya know"

Wrong Wrong WRONG.

Sleaze is like any other party. It's about supplying a selection of music over all spaces so that lovers of all sorts of dance music can feel comfortable somewhere.

NEVER say Sleaze is only supposed to be about dark music.... that simply put, is an urban myth !

Fantastic rig, lighting and sound. The shows were amazing too. And the trance set really brought it home at the end with the fantastic laser show - was awesome sitting in the bleaches and watching it all. Stage 11/ Forum was really packed with camp disco playing each time I ventured there. Dome really didn't do it for me sorry.
All in all me and my mates had a great time.

Only downside for me was dance floor was too small - very squishy there in he middle, so opted for he sides of the dancefloor as usual.

Again thanks NMG for a great time....

If they had had the dance floor with just one more section added down the side like it normally is would have been great but I still enjoyed myself.

Great party with a great crowd.

Loved the Dome and Hordern where the laser show was better than any I have ever seen (including at Toybox) but I did find the fire blast a bit of Luminere 06 rip off.

Shows were excellent, as was the music. Once comment about the closing trance set, for me this would have been better placed in the middle of the night, when my energy levels where higher. I just coudn't jump up and down and scream and shout at 7 in the morning.

What a great night! Fabulous, fantastic lighting in the Hordern - best I have seen there in years. Was a bit squishy in the middle of the Hordern, and more so in the Forum, but that just meant that there were lots and lots of our community having a great time. The crowd was friendly and happy and smiling throughout.
Music in the Forum was fabulous for us older approaching 50 folk - brought back many memories of the mid nineties, but one or two lasers in there would be the icing on the cake!
Thanks to the two lovely boys who kept offering us yummy chewy lollies throughout the night, and thanks to the bears who happily made space for a couple of old dykelets in their midst in the Hordern.

My compliments to NMG for a job well done. As for the cancellation of Luminere. No regrets. I would happily attend their parties if they planned it on another weekend instead of the coatails of Sleaze or MArdi Gras. Why can't they stage a party at the Horderns on NYE? I would definitely be there.

I tend to agree with your views. When I was in my 20's and 30's crowds were never a problem at these parties. Now I'm 49 and I tend to be a bit sensitive to these situations. I also say to myself that much of what I experience is directly related to my state of mind. If I find myself becoming selfconscious I simply bring my focus back to it's centre.Every now and then I would silently chant my Buddhist mantra "Om mani padme hum", it really helps to keep a positive focus towards myself and others. I was a bit concerned by the number of OD's I witnessed. Two people collapsed beside me while dancing. Not a pleasant experience. I had a wonderful time, probably the best time out of the last 5 or more years.

Just while we're on the topic of security, was it true that they were not letting boys in to the girls bathroom? All night? It's almost always been OK in years past, and obviously creates a huge problem given the huge amount of boys at the party versus the 4-5 cubicles in the underground boys hordern toilets.

Sleaze was really great this year (as was the sensational ghetto fabulous in '06), but a little consistency would be nice (ie music style in the hordern, bathroom policy etc. 9/10 :)

No offense to the 3 DJ's but for me B2B2B2 at the Hordern didn't work at all. The music was all over the place; to be blunt, it was dog's breakfast. Lumping DJ's with varying musical styles/instincts into one slot has rarely worked for me and it was abysmal this time. Having said that, the 2 boys who later played seemed to deliver seamless trance. Perhaps there is not too much variety in trance as a musical genre than say 'house music'???
Music aside, Sleaze was fabulous (if you can find the music you want to hear). The theming was like no other. It is obvious that much thought and preparation has gone into it. The shows at the Hordern were of a very high standard. Thank you NMG for your work of love. Big hugs to the vollies; you do a great job for all of us. I look forward to next year's big 30.

Please no more B2B's unless you are sure the DJ's concerned are not too different from each other (Mandy and Feisty seem to work as well -- every time).

DJ wish for next year: a Melbourne DJ named Andrew Padula who I heard play for the very first time at Action. IMHO, as DJ's go, simply a rare talent. He had the main room under his magic spell from the first beat to the last bar. Amazing! His natural home is the Hordern 1-3pm.

What I don't understand about the b2b thing is that some of the DJs had never played with each other before - how do they know whether there would be rappore or not? I agree that it works well with DJs who have it sorted out - Mandy & Feisty are the best example of this, but there have been others who have also played regularly together (Eg Alex Taylor & Chip who played Sleaze last year but also regualarly played Slide). It's hard to think about which other DJs would regularly play this way. Mandy Rollins & Buck Naked have been doing this at Dirty but that's about all I can think of off hand.

Payment ?
In a B2B arrangement of lets say a 3 hour set , do BOTH Dj's get paid for 3 hours or do they spilt the 3 hour fee between them ?

just curious ?

We had a fabulous Sleaze. Top crowd, great music, great vibe, and happy party friends, but a HUGE thanks to

Hey Lighting Guy!

who made my special party moment as I sat in the bleachers at the back of the Hordern and waited for the lasers to go on. They didn't just "go on", they fucking exploded, and everyone around me went off their nuts.

Thank you so much Mardi Gras for putting on a great party, to all the vollies and tech crew and DJs, and to all the fabulous punters who bought their manners and vibes and love to a top night.

Re:
Agree also re the B2B. Didn't quite work for us, so we went off to the Forum while that was happening, and came back later for the blow your mind amazing lights. Think NMG were trying to please as many people as possible, which is a big ask.
But still the best Sleaze for a long time!

Re:
I agree the back to back dj thing is a bit confusing on teh dance floor. It was especially evident in teh 2nd set with Kate, Alan and the other dj. It was just not consistant. I know these three djs are very god and well qualified but it was evident that they did not pre plan what they were going to play and subsequently made it very disjointed. This back to back dj thing is something taht doesn't always work especially if the djs have not worked togther like that before. Sleaze Ball was great but I don't think it was one of teh best that has been on. The last minute addition of the cancelled Luminere lasers was welcomed but it would have been a vastly different Hordern if they didn't have the extra lasers. Hopefully Mardi Gras will have the same amount of lasers again next year and please bring back the bigger dance floor. It shrunk at this years Mardi Gras and subsequently was shrunk again for Sleaze.
Overall it was a great party but not a fantastic party.

Re:
Yeah this is not a bitch but both MG and Sleaze had the
shrunken dance floor.
Is it to make it look packed ? due to lower numbers ?
Dont agree if this is so. Would much rather have a large dance floor with plenty of room to move etc.

Again not a whine, just wondering.

Looking like MG 2008 is gonna blow the socks off us.

Sleaze proved all those negative nellies wrong with their particular bitching about Tim Graham.

Where are your apologies ?????????????????
? - Replies: add

Tim Graham was only average at best in my opinion.

There are no apologies required.

I would agree that Tim Graham was average. For me his inexperience showed. It was however a great night overall.

The shrunken dancefloor which as featured at the last few MG parties is a cost cutting exercise. You wouldn't believe how much the flooring cost to hire.

After the party
I walked past the Hordern this morning and they are still cleaning up.It amazed me the amount of stuff that people loose at these parties!
It also re-inforced home how much effort goes into staging these events. The level of detail and organisation to make it all happen is simply awesome.
I accept that people make critical comments about one thing or another at these parties. But with the immense diversity of people attending these events. It is simply impossible to please everyone.
On a high note I joined NMG today, I encourage anyone and everyone to do the same. It's one way of supporting NMG and each other.

Thankyou NMG.

Re:
Funny, the dance floor was packed and till your negative comment there were none from any other posters.
Only praise for the whole party.

Re:
Average? were you even at the party? Tim Graham and Pete Newtown kept the Hordern packed until the party ended. I've never seen so many people jumping around at the end of sleaze. given that they were back to back i'm not sure how you can separate one from the other - they both rocked. sounds like you've got an axe to grind rather than talking about how the party actually went.

Re:
"Tim Graham and Pete Newtown kept the Hordern packed until the party ended."

Ummmmm , thats not quite true at all.

The crowd numbers in the Hordern were waning in the last 90 minutes, so much so that a snap decision was made at 7.30am to close the packed Forum (aka City Live) at 7.40am and herd those people into the Hordern for the closing show. When Murray Hood (last DJ in the Forum) was told of the snap decsion it came as a surprise.

Pinkboard is unable to verify this statement.

Re:
Imagine how frantic the clean up of the party must have been given that the Parklife afterparty (Afterlife) was held at the Horden from 10pm on Sunday night! I wonder whether the two groups then share the dance floor hire to save the pack up and re-lay (as I imagine it would take a long time??) and then the lighting rigs and DJ set up's etc must take quite a while to be packed up for the Afterlife group to then install their bits and pieces.

Loved the party, really enjoyed the crowd. The lights and lasers and happy people I encountered were probably my favourite aspects of the night. Hopefully if we all buy our MG08 tickets nice and early we might have larger dance floors in both the Hordern and the RHI. :-)

Great night overall. Thanks so much to everyone involved and all of those who worked so hard to provide us with all the ingredients to create a truly fun night out!

Looking forward to MG08...now if we could just have a great big NYE party at the Hordern to tide us over 'til then!! ;-)

Sleaze was awesome
Congratulations to Brad Wright and everyone responsible for staging a fabulous Sleaze.

The shows and costumes were great. The stage looked fabulous and the Cosima De Vito show was amazing. What a great voice! Toby and Nikki were great and how sexy is Vanessa Amorosi now that she has dumped Mark Holden as her manager. This years shows oozed creativity.

I really enjoyed the Hoopaholics. I could not take my eyes of them. Will someone please tell Santa that Laserboy would like a few of those hoops for Christmas.

The lighting in the Hordern was awesome. The extra lasers really made a huge difference. Big halls like the Hordern need lots of lasers and NMG certainly delivered the goods. Hopefully there will be just as many lasers for Mardi Gras 2008 and all future parties.

It has been a long time since a NMG party has resulted in so many positive comments on Pinkboard. NMG have lifted their production standards and the punters are extremely happy. Congratulations to everyone involved. You really nailed it! You have restored my faith in Mardi Gras and Sleaze!

Re:
In fact the dance floor was lifted up by Afterlife after Sleaze as they didn't want to raise expectations of having a dance floor at future parties.
MG are the only people who lay dance floor down in the Hordern
