New Mardi Gras
Sleaze Ball 2003 Graffiti
Wall 2
Firstly, do not be blazé about the effects and dangers of drugs. If in
doubt, say no. Don't pressure your friends to do things they are not
comfortable doing.
Secondly, look after your friends. If anything does go wrong go to Medical. They are there to make sure we have a safe party.
Have a great Sleaze! Panther
NEW WALL YAY !!!!
i love your intro panther:)
can we just have a wall to comment on djs... a DJ wall???
that way, the other walls could be censored and there wouldn't need to
be this constant debate over material in the graffiti walls
maybe a silly idea, but it is one - Mon 29 Sep 2003 23:38:58
emergency departments
don't report drug overdoses to the police. This would only stop people
seeking medical attention. That makes these predictions totally false
why didnt DJ Kimchi
get asked to play at Sleaze ? he'd be great in any of the halls. anyone
know what time he's playing at QN and what room ?
Good point, well made.
- Tue 30 Sep 2003 07:57:04
An PRA perspective, the emergency department's primary focus is the
patient's well being, not policing the law, or taking on any sort of
parental/judgemental role. We are far too busy, overdoses far too
common and have got far more important things to worry about. No single
entity, nurse, doctor, clinitian is going to take it on themselves to
call up the police to report an overdose or any type of drug use. The
police would not be terribly interested in any case, they're far too
busy as well. geeze they're not terribly interested when someone has
been shot or stabbed. It's all very ho hum, that's the reality, and
like, I'm yet to see a nurse or doctor in the ED or ICU who could be
bothered with that side of the situation.
- Tue 30 Sep 2003 09:31:10
If Sleaze fails to
get the numbers it can be blamed on the "Community" minded loosers who
developed the origninal Advertising concepts. Look at at those people,
its hardly aspirational. Ian Jobson did a great job in redesigning the
posters one week before the party but anyone with any Marketing
experience will tell you its too late. This is simple bad management.
If the Party fails it will be directly as an adverse reaction to the
Original Advertising concept and the people who commissioned should be
held accountrable. They will be to blame as to why Sleaze is no more
DJ Kimchi arrived today
For my two cents worth, I don’t think a poster sells an event like
Sleaze. If you select a target market (that is realistic, not just all
people who might want to go out on the night of the 4/10) and find out
what they want and tailor the event to them then people will go. These
days I perceive Sleaze as a night time Big Day Out, only the dress
sense is WORSE!

So you bought your ticket then ?

Mmmm Stephen Kidman.....move on..this topic has been discussed, disected, bitched about, applauded, for the last month on pinkboard.....Get over it!!! Any one with any marketing experience knows that if a campaign is not working then you update it...exactly what the guys at NMG did.
You need to catch up with everybody else Stephen, and look forward to
what will be a great night...and if your'e not there, then all the
better for those of us who will be!!!!
We've all moved on, and can see past the poster mate ...why can't you!

Now that Cle has been
eliminated from Australian Idol (still can't believe it), is there any
chance she will perform at Sleaze????Thank you so much for your insight and marketing advice. I am sure that NMG could use someone like you on their marketing team. Oh sorry, thats right, you dont have time to volunteer your services... you are too busy criticising those we give hours and hours of their time to community organisations.
Buy a ticket to sleaze, get laid, and hopefully it will move the stick thats up your.....
- Tue 30 Sep 2003 13:28:06
"The comments re ED and their likely response are all very well made and make sense........ but somewhat besides the point'
Well...no.... the point was that people need to know that an emergency medical response doesn't automatically engender a police response. The poster who made the point suggested that people would stop seeking ED help if they thought that clinical staff would "dob them in." And the poster is right. They would. And then the chances of people experiencing much more adverse outcomes would be greatly increased. And that wouldn't be very good....would it :)
That doesn't in any way detract from your excellent point that a Saturday night
withou an OD would be a bloody fine thing.

Moving on, does any have the right time/right hall for this Russian Olympic
aerial artist ? I bet it will be a real mind blower and would love to be
there.
No guesses please.
Where is Inside Phantom ? or at least his/her replacement ?
Just enjoy - Tue 30 Sep 2003 17:30:34
There was a huge queue at Ticketek by Hyde Park yesterday lunch time which is real weird for a monday, as most of the usual suspects would be recovering fromn the weekend.
Someone also told me that the discounts and concessions do not apply to Saturday night sales ? Can anyone confirm?
- Tue 30 Sep 2003 18:26:06
It's too late to buy
tickets through Ticketek now in Melbourne. They need a week to post the
tickets to you. Will there be sales at the door? (Saves the booking fee
too!).
lucky 10,000th should win free entry
The Russian aerial
performance will be in the RHI, spoke to one of the NMG guys last night
and he said they were very confidant of 10,000+. The small amount of info he would reveal about shows sounds great, Lot's of lasers etc, openning show in RHI, he said do not miss!
As for city live / stage 11, he said lots of black curtains, will be nothing like Inquisition's terrible lighting. Also heard there's a leatherman show in there after 1.00am.
cheers

Oh I'm awfully sorry love, but I've already reserved that cubicle at
that exact time for a cookery demonstration. I think third on the left
is free at 2am however. As long as you don't mind the aroma of my fresh
scones.
Sally Tomato - Wed 1 Oct 2003 18:01:51
Please NMG can we have times ? PLEASE ?????????????????????
I really hate having to waste 1/2hr before a show being all squashed up on the
dance floor to find out its not what I wanted to watch ie it would be great
to know what time the trapeze will be as I reckon it will be a blow out
and hopefully can just rock up 15mins before without wasting valuable
time.
I dont know why they dont publish the times. Cant be because of too
large crowds etc as once its full they close the doors anyway.
Please NMG pulish the show times ? - Wed 1 Oct 2003 18:35:14
Looking for donkey dicks. Meet me in the Hordern toilets - second cubicle on the left - 2am.The toilets upstairs or the toilets down stairs? (one must know his Horden toilets) I'm happy with no sex spaces, it only attracts undesired attention. 2nd or 3rd cubicle on the left will suit just fine, don't have to dodge the groapers this way anyways.

mmmmmmmm a "huge"
queue at Ticketek on Monday, Gee, I wonder if there's anything else of
note on this weekend that people may have waited for weekend results
before getting tickets?
errr, people *could* be buying Rubgy Tickets
they do sell tix for other things at that outlet ...

Heard about the Rugby World Cup, Love? :)
- Thu 2 Oct 2003 09:25:10
Every year its the
same - poor ticket sales right up to the event and then a mad scramble
in the last 2 days to sell tickets. Why not offer a discount to tickets
purchased at least a month before the event - all the "community"
people would love this - the event would be much easier to manage as
they could plan for numbers based on the early ticket sales. Come on
NMG its not rocket science!
Why are women so
heavily represented in the Sleaze and general Mardi Gras advertising?
Surely this does not represent their numbers in the community as a
whole.
Probably to attract more female punters. God knows it's hard to spot the women through the sea of men.

Can we stop using the word "git". We're in Australia, not the UK.
Panther said to Dance till dawn. Meet friends under the mirror ball. Meet new friends on the dance floor. Love everyone.
got that?

Excuse my ignorance,
but I thought rugby world cup tickets went on sale and sold out long
ago. Obviously I was wrong. It's not really my cup of tea and I don't
follow the release date of tickets for it. I am so very sorry that I
seem to have upset people by my ignorance. At least it's nice to know
that I can rely on some of you people to inform me (in such a polite
and non-condescending way) that people would be lining up for rugby
tickets.
I asked them did they enjoy the Mardi Gras Festival . Not only the party but
Fair Day , Shop to you drop etc etc etc . They realised what I was on
about and their are plenty of other times to go to QN or Ruby etc so
they are now
going - VICTORY..............
Might be just a couple of extra guys but if others do it...........Also the
ones saying " I'm over parties" rang me today and guess what ! The hype
as got them going now...............
Does anyone know when the trapeze guy will be on ? dont wanna waste time running into the RHI to check each show.
Just would like to know - Thu 2 Oct 2003 19:10:55
no one i know is going still
the highlight of the party is gonna be a russian on a trapeze ?
Saw Dmitri the Russian aerialist tonight. He is really hot. I hope I get to meet him on the dance floor later in the night!

posse, and a few others. Not that I regard me and my friends s
representative....... but then I am sure you and yours aren't either.
Obviously you don't know many people.

Rugby LEAGUE dear. The grand final is on this Sunday.
Christ even straights know when MG is on, don't you think you should know the straight equivalent?
- Fri 3 Oct 2003 06:35:57
This "atrracting female punter" debate has been discussed before.
There are some people who believe that no matter how much you try, you aren't going to get 50/50 split between men and women participating in a range of community activities ie. MG membership has also vastly skewed towards gay men, same with MG/sleaze ticketing, same with participation in social/sporting groups, nightclubs and bars etc.
There are probably several reasons for this ranging from women not identifyingw with these orgs etc, to women feeling overwhelmed and unwelcome by men at these places, or even just the idea that there are simply more gay men than there are lesbians.
The idea that we should keep on having gender parity in all instances of advertising and board representation starts to grate on people after a couple of decades because no matter what we do we can't get women being 50% of the G&L (visible) community.
And there are times when it's more than just effort that is "wasted". Sometimes it's financial - and heavy financial waste. an example is the old MG festival event "Celebration of the female voice" which was designed to be a large women's event yet was vastly underattended (and lost lots of money) for 2 years running.
I don't think that Stephen is a mysoginist just because he sees gender parity as something that doesn't work in practice.
- Fri 3 Oct 2003 06:43:52
Can't wait for
saturday night, to all the gays and gals going, have a great time and
look after your mates, have enjoyed reading the positive comments on
this wall. To those negative commentators, have a good weekend anyway,
we won't miss you, we'll be too busy have a great night. I'm going alone, I've just turned 40, I'll be wearing a little leather, and am even performing in the leather show in stage 11.
Have fun everyone, remember it's our party, so let's all enjoy.
See you on the dance floor.
cheers

Enjoy Sleaze weekend fellow partyers, party hard and party safe.
that's sad. i'm going, though. if you want, you can get to know me. I'll be the approachable one, smiling and dancing by myself.
ya can never have enough mates - Fri 3 Oct 2003 10:04:37
Lets just pull our
heads out of the sand long enough to realise that attempting to market
sleaze or any gay event to both gays and lesbians does not work. AS the
voice of reason commented above "gender partity does not work in
practice". Anybody who questions it is shouted down by a small but
vocal fringe of Lesbian women who feel threatned that they might be
marginalised. It will be too late to save NMG and its events when most
of us finally open or eyes, sleaze and MG will end up as period events
for the over 40s. Without a youth market its has no future
countdown boy, love,
if you're going to do a two hourly count at least get your sums right.
from 10am on friday to 10pm on saturday is 36 hours. just think, it's
two hours closer than your realised!
Ya can never have enough mates –
exactly! I am going with a bunch of lesbians, so will be almost craving some male contact! Enjoy everyone!
B - Fri 3 Oct 2003 11:23:33
Stephen Kidman - Fri 3 Oct 2003 10:39:43
Can't it be that the organisers of Sleaze wanted to use women in the
campaign just for the hell of it? Does it have to be an issue if they
use more women then men? Men are going to go to the party anyway.
- Fri 3 Oct 2003 11:24:31
NMG, whether you like it or not, is a coalitionist organisation. Whether you like it or not, we lesbians are around and we deserve to party as much as you boys. And believe it or not, the youth market includes lesbians as well as gay men. We don't suddenly turn 40 when we come out as a lesbian.
I really hate when people like you use phrases like 'the voice of reason' and 'anybody that questions it gets shouted down by a small but vocal fringe of lesbians' in order to justify their attitudes toward women being involved in our community. Because then small but vocal lesbians with a fringe, such as myself, stand up for themselves and call you a git and you then will try and come back and say 'you see what I mean, this is just what they are like'.
Keep up the good (coalitionist) work NMG, even if the first poster
wasn't a hit. And Stephen,I'll be there tomorrow night with my GF and
just to warn you in advance I will be at MG 2004 as will a lot of us
gals, so you will just have to deal

I'm starting to think
that Stephen Kidman is stirring us all up on purpose with his inane,
uneducated comments. I don't think he really believe anything he has
been banging on about, and is just trying to get a reaction out of us!!
Stephen, is this true? are you really an open minded, intelligent

I would love to say ignore Stephen Kidman ( still want a toilet named after him, so appropriate and everyone can take a s... on him ! ) but sometimes you do have to reply to these "types".
Ignore him luv, the Stephens of this world are the ones that
swirl into a company , create havoc with their ideas , then leave the
company in a mess.
Worked with that type so many times I can recognise them within 5 minutes of
an interview.
Have a great weekend boyf and girlf.
I hope to catch up with Evil Twin and Ms Golightly who have described
themselves and I'm pretty good at searching people out at a party.

hope the majority do try and be creative to make the night more
special. Although I know by mindnight the main areas will be a sea of
topless bodies. If this is the last Sleaze at the Hordern, then I want
to have fantastic stories to tell the people who missed out ;)There has been enough tragedy in the last month, lets make this a better one, by staying of the G and being careful with the K.
Everybody have a great weekend, have fun, and as Jerry say

Rambling Man - I dont think ( hope ) this will be the last Sleaze in Hordern.
So long as the Community supports these events they will continue but at worst
the RHI would bite the dust ( my guess ) and just Hordern and Dome/Stage 11 etc.
I know its an old arguement but for 3 nites of the year ( including Pride NYE )
there are usually enough halls / styles of music to keep the majority happy and
the $'s raised help the community so not only do you get to make a donation you get a party as well.

And the reason that NMG would not do a early ticket deal is I think simply due to the fact that it near sells out anyway. Why short change yourself? If the fact is that 70% of the tickets sell in the last week before the event then it is just a fact to live with.
Well guys i hear that late today Sleaze sold out... If not it did not have many tickets available. and remember last MG? thats right it sold out at the gate and they turned people away.
Such is life live with it.....

Great shows, great crowd, great everything.....The Horden however did the trick! Great music Great atmosphere and
people were really friendly. The first show was absolutely amazing as
well - best ever.

That DJ Josh is
wicked; what a magnificent set at the Horden! There she was, perched
high in the centre, like some high priestess, orchestrating
proceedings. She had all firmly in her control, and eating from the
palm of her hand.... Now that's a classy chick!
I had a great time.
Thank you NMG. The aerialist show was electrifying and I liked almost
all of the music. CityLive is no substitute for the Dome (those steps
down are really disconcerting and the whole place is a thoroughfare)
but that's that I guess. And the boys were so restrained!!! What got
into them wonder (or rather didn't).You really nailed it in my opinion.
Lots of good classics and some fine current tunes too.
On another note I was disappointed for all the DJ's in the RHI. For some bizarre reason New Mardi Gras decided to break with a long standing tradition in dance parties by not introducing or back announcing the DJ's names on the microphone.
This robbed the guys of there well deserved applause and because the music was continuous unless you knew what time it was as well as the changeover times you wouldnt have even known that a DJ changeover actually happened.
Lets not see this happen again please NMG
stephen - Sun 5 Oct 2003 20:40:39
I should give a little context...i actually thought sleaze was going to go the way of all the big parties and fail...i only attended because I believed this Sleaze could well be the last!
Well, I would like to be the first to put my hand up to say I was proved wrong. The entire visual and schematics of this years sleaze were remarkable and completely different from anything in the past. The altar like status the DJ was elevated to in the RHI was fantastic - that luminated light box simply floated above the dance floor (though certain dj's really didn't live up to the elevation). Moreover, the "drowned world" treatment of the horden was simply fantastic and worked on every level. To the party directors, I would like to give an unreserved "well done" and thanks for showing the public that new mardi gras can present an innovative, fresh, exciting new product.
Now as for my night....i saw a butch dyke with a curvey girl who I presumed was evil twin...alas, it was not. DJ Josh nailed it, and to the dirty big leather spunk who missed his boyfriend and spent all night dancing with me....well, you know who you are (you ran off with the football guy if you need a reminder)...big regrets about not snogging you...so remember me for next year if you are a pinkboarder...absolute total spunk if you need a reminder.
Just finished recovery and looking forward to a comfortable
warm (single) bed in a few minutes. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as
me!
Ms Golightly - Mon 6 Oct 2003 00:10:41
NMG got it right in just about every aspect this time and congratulations need to go to everyone involved.
Now to the DJ's (well the ones we saw anyway)... Firstly I agree with one of the above comments which said the dj's need to be announced and thanked when they finish.
After touring the different venues when we arrived, I have to say that it was a toss up between Mandy Rollins and Ryan Murphy for the best opening set of the night.
We ended up catching most of Ryans set and this really set our scene for the night. Brilliant in every aspect.
Mandy was up to her usual high standards but I just wasn't certain with the venue....
Saw Shigeki as well and was a little dissapointed after hearing so many good reports about his work, I felt his set just wasn't working so we ended back at Ryan till the changeover.
DJ Josh seemed to start slowly which after the awesome set by Ryan sort of changed the vibe that was happening. After a few tracks, we decided to head to the RHI but I heard reports that Josh really picked up towards the middle of the set and ended up kicking butt.
When we got to the RHI, I think it wa Jake Kilby doing a retro set! This was great fun to hear Cathy Dennis and Stevie Nicks songs ( I hope I got this right, I know both these songs were played but not sure if they were both by Jake). Unfortunately I think the retro set went maybe just one or two songs too many as the dancefloor was starting to empty towards the end of this section, however Jake picked it up and threw everything he had at the crowd. Eventually the crowd came back and Jake showed why he has such a good reputation. Excellent set overall, well done.
Finally Alex Taylor, I've not hear him play before but his reputation certainly preceeded him. After the brilliance of Jake Kilby I was really expecting big things, unfortunately I was a little let down. I think the selection of songs was great but the choice of mixes was not all that good. Too many times the music would just go dead in the middle of the mix and everyone just standing around ooking at each other, waiting for the beats to starts again. This sort of thing is ok in 1 or 2 songs but it seemed like almost every track Alex played did this, resulting in a very dis-jointed sounding set.
In summary;
Ryan Murphy - Stunning, outstanding and by far the best on the night.
Jake Kilby - Brilliant easily the best in the RHI.
Mandy Rollins - Sensational as ever, shame about the venue though.
Alex Taylor - Great but less breaks in the music would have been preferable.
Shigeki - Good but it's always hard going first.
Finally to the two muscle guys who danced near us all night, I
think they were Simon and George. You guys looked fantastic and it was
great chatting and dancing with you both.
DJ Shanobear (aka the Croc Hunter) - Mon 6 Oct 2003 08:02:03
Re - Mon 6 Oct 2003 10:17:21
The lights and lasers in the RHI and Horden were astounding. Some of my friends were transfixed by the lasers in the RHI towards the end of Jake Kilbys set.
I felt the lighting in City Live left a lot to be desired especially with all those steps around the place.
The rotating DJ booth in the Horden was a really great sight to see.
The sound in the RHI was a bit flat from the sidelines but once you got on the dancefloor, it was crystal clear and perfect volume. Loud enough to drive everyone wild but you could still have a quick chat to others when the need arose.
The crowd this year were a lot more positive and friendly than last years crowd. It seemed like everyone was out to party and that's exactly what we did.
Just explaining the Croc hunter tag, my partner and I went dressed as
the Croc Hunter and wife (rather ironic when we are two big hairy
bears!). We got a lot of great comments from people and had a lot of
fun with the costumes.
DJ Shanobear - Mon 6 Oct 2003 12:17:25
One downer, why the Lesbian space? I was rejected and ejected as I tried to go upstairs at Stage 11. How offensive is that. I really thought the Sydney Dyke community had grown up and evolved. Obviously not. If the dykes want their own party why don't they just organise it SOMEWHERE ELSE rather than demonstrating separatism the the new generation. Be ashamed.
Woof Bear.
- Mon 6 Oct 2003 12:27:10
I thought Neal
Crawford played a ripper of a closing set in the Horden. I came outside
to the Galleria for a chillout around 7am and the guy playing there
(Anthony somebody) was playing some fantastic house tunes and people
were jumping all over the place. Great production in the big halls and
the opening show was great. Fantastic job NMG. I think you silenced the
critics.
Hi everyone. I would
just like to say I tried doing a party for the first time ever without
the aid of extra substances. Am I crazy I hear you ask?? No
Unfortunately there are some people with have to work the next day. But
it certainly is possible to make it through the party with a few
coffees and cans of red bull. It was quite different standing back and watching how every body behaved. ANd yes it is also possible to dance in this odd natural state.
Well done to the new Mardi Gras for a well put on party. It's about time we all just got over the past events of the previous MG board failure, September 11, increased insurance costs etc etc. Let's get over those things and be successful again.
That opening show! WOW! That was spectacular! There was almost too much to look at. What I also found interesting is I do not believe there were any celebrity performances. Can anyone clarify if there were some performances?
You know it really isn't that hard to get someone to perform at the show. All the local talent we have and the fabulous volunteer dancers that always support our community could help put a great performance together. To the local celebs out there, do you know how much good PR and support you would get from our community if you volunteered one free performance? It's priceless PR work.
The rhi was very nicely done with plenty of dark spaces and
space to move. The hordern was very different with the revolving DJ in
the centre. I wonder if there were any dizzy or sea sick DJ's by the
end of their set. Don't know about the no floor boards in the hordern?
Did anyone have trouble with sore feet? Did anyone actually get into
city live? What was in the girls space?
partyboy - Mon 6 Oct 2003 13:56:24
The opening show was 100/10 - more of that kind of show please, the crowd was
screaming and cheering. So much better than 50 people just dancing to tune.
But........................
Please put the wooden dance floor back into the Hordern ! by aching feet will thank you - Mon 6 Oct 2003 16:10:39
Home finally after a
great weekend! We had a fine Sleaze, but OW! wasn't it cold outside!
Moving from venue to venue as we ended up doing got a lot chilly, but
once inside and dancing it warmed up very quickly. I watched the whole
of the arialist show with an open mouth... how amazing was that! The
leathershow could have been a lot more, er, vigourous. We were waiting
for the boys to be turned over and given a decent wacking. We asked the
security at the bottom of the stairs in city live why our boy handbag
couldn't go up with us and they thought it was because "downstairs is
boys only and upstairs is girls only." Who the hell told them that?
What a crock. I did manage to get up to some naughtiness there though.
The 4am girls "show" (and I use that term loosely) was a bit of a
fizzer. Oh, and there were plenty of lesbians, darling.
We looked around for Pinkboarders, but even missed seeing our beautifully roped up mate who we *always* see at parties. We missed the dome because we could always find people we knew there. However, we picked up the party posse early on and always had someone to hang out with.
The music? Well, wandering around let us pick and choose. Spent the most time in the RHI I guess, excellent lighting, nice walking space, and plenty of good tunes to dance to. The Horden, argh! where were all the seats? My girl ended up with a dirty bottom from sitting on the steps. One less video screen and a few more rows of seats would have been lovely. I can't complain about the music really. The DJs did their job, worked hard, and I didn't see an unpacked floor.
We left about 6.34am and walked to a friends place, and then home for sleep. Would have liked to do the girls recovery, but slept through it! We ended up at the Lord Roberts and got Ben Drayton playing just for us. That was exceptionally cool, as it felt like we were sitting in his louge room, having relaxing ales and winding down (and coming back up a bit too). He so picked exactly the right music. Yay.
Took a walk up Oxford St this arvo but didn't see too many trash bags.
Well done! It was all good, and congrats to NMG for a fine party.
Evil Twin - Mon 6 Oct 2003 17:16:01
Now for some constructive critisism -
Firstly re City Live - New Mardi Gras should be TOTALLY ashamed and embarrassed with themselves for the way they allowed "OUR COMMUNITY" to be divided by allowing the top level of City Live to be a space where only females could enter. Talk about dividing our community rather than bringing us all together. At the VERY least if a girls area is to be allowed then the men should deserve equal rights and also have a space (and I dont mean a sex space). I'd also like to question what was actually going on up in that little girls only area. I just wonder if if was a sex space for the girls. I for one will never know. Maybe evil twin or another lesbian pinkboarder could enlighten us ? My final comment on this topic is that NMG should NEVER allow this to happen again unless you intend only treating both genders equally and either provide no gender space at all or a gender space both male and female. What happened on Saturday night was sheer gender discrimination. I am appauled.
Whilst on City Live I felt disappointed for the DJ's due to the positioning of the DJ Box. I ran into Buck Naked after he had finished his set at about 6am and commented to him that I thought the fact that the DJ box was all the way up against the back wall of the stage was a bit silly. DJ's need to feel in touch with the crowd and to me it seemed logical that the DJ box should have been up near the edge of the stage closer to the people on the dance floor. Buck indicated to me that due to the positioning of the DJ Box that his line of sight cut out about the first 20 or so metres of people on the dance floor.
Now the RHI -
A previous poster made comment about the DJ's not being introduced or thanked via the microphone. I totally agree with this comment. Jake Kilby played one the best sets of his life in my opinion only to be told that after he played his last song at 5am that he made to mixed in (with no gap) the 5am show tune. He then had to pack his stuff up swap with Alex Taylor and then Alex had to start up. I would say 95% of the people in that room wouldnt have had the foggiest idea that happened. DJ's need to be announced pure and simple.
I also found it VERY disconcerting that the DJ was placed miles up in the air in a different stage to where the lighting operaters where. There are two things wrong with this -
1. Lighting operators sometimes like to know what song is coming up next cause they can manipulate what lights to use to particular tracks that have certain highs and lows in them. No communication between DJ and Lighting operator can sometimes result in incorrect lighting for the mood of a particular song.
2. By having the DJ in the RHI perched up so high he loses alot of crowd interaction. I am a personal friend of all 3 of the DJ's that played the RHI on Saturday and I was really disappointed that I could give them a wave from the dance floor. I tried to , but it meant having to stand about 10-20 metres into the centre of the dance floor by which time there was no hope of the DJ spotting me from that distance. DJ's thrive on seeing people in the crowd that they are friends with and traditionally most friends and acquantances of the playing DJ tend to dance in front of the DJ so they can show their support and admiration for that DJ. For years and years all my social group have said before a party "OK, I'll meet you on the dance floor in front of the DJ box". Saturday night threw that theory into chaos and as a result I actually didnt see a few of my friends during the night. I felt the RHI DJ's on Saturday were robbed of the opportunity to see their friends dancing in eye sight with looks of admiration and thanks. I know its sounds a bit petty but unless you have experienced the thrill of seeing up close your life long friends getting off on your music then you really wouldnt undertand how important this is.
As far as the Hordern is concerned I cant really say much cause I spent a grand total of about 20 minutes in there. The layout looked fantastic and the place was going off. I just wonder how demoralising it was for the DJ's going round and round on that spinning wheel in the DJ box. Fancy spending about two thirds of your set facing the back wall and not being able to see your crowd ? Whilst the effect might have been good visually for the crowd I'm sure it would have been a major bummer for the DJ's concerned.
Finally, I'd like to go back to Jake Kilby who was the run away winner of the best DJ at Sleaze ball 2003.
My highlights were so numerous but if I had to name a few then they would be that new cover version of Stevie Nicks 'Rooms on Fire' , That new mix of Jinnys 'Keep Warm' , Ambers 'Above the Clouds' and of course that bootleg Dead or Alive vs Dannii of 'I Begin to wonder'... Ps - I could have done without that version of ABBA's 'The Visitors' , but hey you cant win them all. Well done Jake you did yourself proud.
Thank you to New Mardi Gras. You truly excelled on the night. It was a really top notch event.
countdownboy - Counting the 152 days to go to Mardi Gras - Mon 6 Oct 2003 17:25:37
I had G last night & didnt die. had a great time actually & the best sex of my life
No, the girls floor
didn't have a sex space, although I took advantage of the less crowded
mens toilet :-). The red room had some lounges but was quite brightly
lit. Managed some tag team spanking action there though. Mostly girls
were dancing in the open space or hanging over the railing watching the
boys dance downstairs. Like I mentioned, I was also disappointed that
guys were not allowed upstairs (apart from drag queens apparently who
added some lovely colour. yay). We ran into straight guys in the RHI
actually. I think it's nice when girls can make their own space just by
the natural ebb and flow of the party (ie last years Inky behind the
curtains... mmmmmmm!) or word of mouth beforehand. You can always find
a bunch of girls to dance with in the main halls if you wander for a
while.
I thought the curtained area at the end of the bar downstairs was the
boys sex space, cause it was awfully gropey when I walked through it.
Downstairs was rather blokey, but it was supposed to be the Dome
stand-in and that usually had a high bloke to girl ratio.
Evil Twin (not a seperatist) - Mon 6 Oct 2003 18:19:18
Re a posting at Sat 4 Oct 2003 16:11:57
Quote - "NMG has found a "work around" for a sex area.. That is correct they found a soluition at 11am on Friday this week. Does anybody know any more details?"
My question - Was this fact or fiction ? Did anybody find a sex space and if so where ?
- Mon 6 Oct 2003 18:40:59
I'm going out on a limb here, so please don't give me hell...
I just want to say thank you to all. I had a great time playing in the RHI at sleaze and that is due to the great crowd, great lighting design and operation and party production. The RHI looked the best it ever has, in my opinion, and the lighting operator and visual operator did an amazing job. A special thanks to Brad Wright for his amazing work. Music is important but the atmosphere is lost if the lights aren't right (or in this case, Wright!).
From my perspective, everyone seemed to be having a good time and that's all I really care about. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and its good to see that most of the comments above are positive and that a majority of the negative ones are worded constructively (apart from one or two nasty ones).
Lastly, on the G topic, I was a little disheartened to see
someone passed out and carried out of the RHI just after I finished
playing. I can't positively say this person was on G, it could have
been any drug taken in excess (hopefully not my music?!?), but the
likelyhood is that it was G. Please be careful everyone.
JK - Mon 6 Oct 2003 18:47:56
The womens space, I was not aware that men could not go there, they should have been, but frankly I don't mind at all giving the women their own space. The party is probably 75%+ dominated by men. Although not official, the idea was that upstairs was the womens space and downstairs the mens. I do though disagree with stopping people entering a space.
Regarding the DJ's in the Horden spending two thirds of their set facing the back wall, umm, the DJ location was in the middle of the dance floor, at no time was the DJ facing a back wall.
Cheers
Colin - member of Sleaze party working group
PS Loved reading the so called inside info on the party, snow in the RHI - felt like snow outside maybe..
PPS To those that didn't like the parts of the party, get involved next time and change it!
- Mon 6 Oct 2003 19:15:47
I agree With Jake
Kilby and the earlier post. Let's forget G. We just want to party and
enjoy ourselves. Not reconstruct or chemical structure."I disagree with you countdownboy about the DJ in RHI being out of touch with the crowd. I've only been going to parties for three years, and in the past I've not had a clue where the DJ was even located because they were not lit up or highlighted in any way I saw Shigeki at one stage getting the crowd to clap and cheer with him, that certainly doesn't happen when the DJ's up on a unlit black box like they usually are, eg. past MG parties, ARQ... "
What a load of hogwash !
At EVERY previous Mardi Gras or Sleaze everybody knows where the DJ is due to the fact that there is only ONE set of scaffholding where the lighting and DJ have been located. The DJ has always been lite up albeit in a red or a blue light. Please dont bring the stupid and pathetically positioned DJ box at ARQ into this discussion - it has no relavence whatsoever to this topic as ARQ is clearly not a dance party, its just a nightclub. As for the Hordern, I have no comment as I didnt leave the RHI all night.
I think countdown boys comments are all spot on and they come from a person who has clearly been there done that given some of his comments re the "inside" workings of parties and DJ's expections of what they expect.
And what about all the other comments he made about various topics that you swept under the carpet and failed to comment on ? Do you agree or disagree or dont you want to give credit where credit is due to a person who put alot of time and effort into his posting.
Finally Craig, You "claim" to be a member of the Sleaze party working group yet you had no idea that men were being excluded from the top level of Stage 11 space. For you not to know this I'd say you werent doing your job properly OR you need to ask some serious questions to others on your committee why this information was withheld from you. I agree with countdownboy that seperatism of a space like that is wrong and should never happen again unless equal rights are extended to male and female each obtaining a space. Personally I'd rather see no segregated spaces ever again.
Sleaze was a brilliant party. I enjoyed the whole night and thank you to all the DJ's who did a damn fine job.
PS - Didnt you know that it snowed outside during the night - I built this cute little muscle mary snowman :P

Now Jake...why is it that stevie nicks gets played when Kim Wilde
not only had much better hair but also was the first diva to exploit
the full potential of the wind machine...need i mention, she was so far
ahead of the crowd in terms of those striped john-paul gaultier
tee's....go figure, i say!

They advertised the laneway recovery starting at 5am, we had a group of people meeting us there at 7am only to find the place padlocked.
Very dissapointed but we ended up at the recovery for the bears instead upstairs at the Oxford and had a great time.

probably didn't drop from G; rather, It was your set that probably
knocked him out!! The RHI was the place to be for me, thanks for the
tunes
Ms Golightly, I have
to say I am a much bigger fan of Kim Wilde than of Stevie Nicks. I came
very close to playing "Never trust a stranger", but "Kids in America"
is unbelievably fast. My bf is a big fan of Stevie and of Fleetwood
Mac, so it was kind of for him (with the hope that everyone else would
enjoy it too). I thought maybe the fact that I played Samantha Fox
might make it up to you that I omitted Kim. My apologies.

You played stevie nicks for your bf?...ah shucks...that's too cute! My first husband once dedicated "tainted love" to me at karaoke but i am not sure that was with the kindest of intentions. Anyhow, Ms Golightly managed to pop home between the party and the recovery and listen to her very own 1981 original copy of "Kim Wilde" - so scratched its positively Manchester baby ! I would love to go back - but I know that forward is the only way to go...and at least I have new knowledge to move me closer to where I belong.
Thank you New Magic Gras - it was magic. Let's hope we can all
continue to value what we have here and that our parties do no
dissappear.
Lucifer - Tue 7 Oct 2003 10:40:00
Sorry to correct you but that track Jake played 'rooms on fire' was only a cover version by a group called Europa XL featuring Natalie James. It wasnt Stevie Nicks singing it (although it did sound alot like Stevie).
To answer the question by DJ Shanobear - Tue 7 Oct 2003 07:34:13
The Flinders Hotel went into receivership 3 weeks ago and the owners have been locked out via a court order. The owners are the same people that also own the Venus Room which they have also have been locked out of for the last 3 weeks. I ran into a few of the drag queens who work at Venus Room at Sleaze and they are all very pissed off cause some of them have back pay owing and some have also got costumes in the dressing room which they have been told they wont be allowed to gain access to.
It looks like the Flinders laneway recoveries are now officially part of history. Its such a shame it came to this.

Please dont again meddle with the tradition of announcing DJ's via a PA system.
DJ's bust their guts preparing their sets for the party as well
as working under extreme pressure on the night. All they ask for in
return is a bit of acknowledgement in the way of a 30 second gap in the
music so they can get a round of applause thanking them. Having their
name displayed on a screen just doesnt come close to the high you get
when thousands of sets of hands are clapping in unison.

But why oh why are big parties not selling out any more. There is
nowhere else where you can be that way. It is amazing how the dancing
is different at a party.
- Tue 7 Oct 2003 16:56:13
The RHI was a bit of a disappointment for me. The music was dull
and predictable (although I didn't hear any of Jake Kilby's set, so
can't comment about that), and the sound quality was below my
expectations. If it wasn't for the Horden, I'd be wishing I hadn't
gone. The first and last shows were impressive, however. Obviously a
lot of effort went into both of them.
- Tue 7 Oct 2003 16:58:24
In recent years after attending a MG or Sleaze party I have felt like diving under a bus today (Tuesday).
Today however is totally different. And whilst I feel a bit tired I am feeling my normal self.
I attribute this to the fact that Sleaze ball 2003 was different, outstanding and most of all it was FUN.
It wasnt the same old same old fox studio party that we have attributed to recent years.
The crowd numbers (I believe it was nearly 11,000) was PERFECT for the event. Never at any stage was the RHI or HOrdern packed to the point where you couldnt move around freely. Mardi Gras should seriously consider making Mardi Gras 2004 a smaller event of say 15,000 - (20,000+ is too big to be enjoyable)
All the DJ's did an excellent job and I especially want to thank Jake Kilby and Alex Taylor who both played great sets in the RHI. I'm honoured to call these guys my close friends. To my other DJ friend Ryan Murphy, I'm sorry I missed your debut dance party set but I heard you kicked ass, well done.
I look forward to Mardi Gras 2004 under the leadership of what
I believe to be a very intelligent group of party people running the
show out there at Petersham. Congratulations to Mark Orr and his team -
You have excelled yourselves and to coin a phrase from "Australian
Idol's" Dicko - "You have raised the bar yet again" - Well Done
everybody, you all get my official stamp of approval.
Stephen Blomfield - Tue 7 Oct 2003 17:33:23
Also to JK and Ryan Murphy, damn you boys were good! JK I thought you were really cheeky playing Sam Fox but being the retro buff that I am, I loved it. My partner went right off to Rooms On Fire too(he's got a Stevie Nicks fetish!) so thanks for that.
- Tue 7 Oct 2003 11:49:52, yes it was talc on the dancefloor,
you must have been dancing near me as some point cause I rarely left
the talc area after the guys put it down.
DJ Shanobear - Tue 7 Oct 2003 18:45:17
Well NMG, again you
have given me a night to remember and will be talking about it for some
time, I believe we have a choice on what we like to hear horden is not
my cuppa, but heard all great esp Neil Crawford (no surprise there) I
was in the RHI most of the night/morning 2 of my best boys were with me
and danced to great music, loved all played, also popped outside and
loved the space in the middle Anthony was playing some great diva and
dance stuff nice to be in fresh air. A HUGE thankyou to Alex one thing
he know how to do is wrap up on a HIGH :-) Madonna / Delta / and Deb
Cox WHAT A FINISH. Do agree please thank your DJ between sets these
boys/girls are what make our night. And to Bren and Steve I loved every
min I spent with you over the weekend Look out MG2004.
Agree with the posts re no dance floor in Hordern - please NMG NEVER do thatAnd that was my only complaint/whinge.
Truly a fantastic party
But please dont stinge on the dance floor :) - Tue 7 Oct 2003 19:18:22
I had a fantastic
night at Sleaze this year! I'm usually in the RHI, but found the music
in there a little slow.. but the music in the Hordern was amazing! Saw
the first show which was great but missed the rest after moving to the
Hordern. The location of the DJ's was incredible in both halls as were
the lighting and the screens! Thanks to all the DJ's for putting in an
incredible effort to make Sleaze a success this year! Oh.. and Queer
Nation on Sunday night was fantastic too!Quote - "NMG has found a "work around" for a sex area.. That is correct they found a soluition at 11am on Friday this week. Does anybody know any more details?"
My question - Was this fact or fiction ? Did anybody find a sex space and if so where ?
- Tue 7 Oct 2003 20:25:45
We arent all spring chickens you know.
Dont ever let the RHI again go without seats. The hordern got seats , why not the RHI ?
sitting on the cement ground is cold - Tue 7 Oct 2003 22:09:04
DJ Shigeki made my
night! He brought me up onto a perfect high and Brad Wright did wonders
with the lighting. What a combination! Let's have them both back for
Pride NYE... I've attended nearly a decade's worth of Sleaze Balls, and
this was the best. Congratulations New Mardi Gras, and the Party
committee, on finally bringing Sleaze into the new millenium in
spectacular style
My bf and I had a
ball at this year's sleaze, although at certain points in the night the
trance at the Hordern became way too monotonous (even on E) and the
music in the RHI just a lil' daggy top 40. Not that it mattered, we'd
just move to the other building.
Must say I was constantly stepping lightly in the hordern anticipating the edge of the (non existent) dance floor. Please don't repeat that.... it's very confusing coming from the RHI with a floor to the Hordern with concrete.
All in all, spectacular shows, lighting, music, and the
FRIENDLIEST party crowd I have experienced in a long while. We all went
there to have fun, and by gum we did!
Sleazebag - Wed 8 Oct 2003 00:25:45

Incorrect.
Theres always been limited seating on the right hand side of the hall
as you walk in. It normally isnt much maybe enought to seat a few
hundred but by God it makes a difference.

I recall Jake Kilby
made a promise a number of weeks ago to pinkboarders that he might
email his playlist from Sleaze to anybody that wanted to see it. Is
that promise still applicable ?
the party was much more successful after the 2nd poster came out

it all in releation to the poster debate.....

Congratulations to New mardi Gras for putting together such an outstanding Sleaze Ball.
After all the crap they endured re the poster what was actually produced on saturday night just goes to show how TOTALLY unimportant the poster actually is.
Its all about what happens on the night and what happened on Saturday night was truly amazing.
Fantastic effort guys. Be proud of what you did, be VERY proud.

Dont EVER change.
SB - Wed 8 Oct 2003 20:57:10
Well done Jake, we
came into the RHI during In Your Eyes and never left after that. My man
and I were especially impressed when you played Am I On Your Mind, this
is a track I love to play myself and you had us hooked from that point
onwards.
Above the clouds – AmberThanks for your contribution and listing your songs. I felt sorry for you on Saturday night (or was it more like Sunday morning) seeing you start your set just as the daylight was begining to kick in. It was so damn cold and the daylight was nearly upon you in that open area space between the RHI & the Hordern. I walked passed you at about 6.15 gave you a wave. You obviously were suffering with the cold and daylight factors. I'm sure better things lay ahead for you.
What I can see developing here is a new tradtion (and a fine tradition at that) of DJ's publically listing their sets post party for all to see.
I fully encourage ANYBODY who knows all the other DJ's at Sleaze besides Jake & Anthony to contact those DJ's and ask them to come onto this board and list their songs. I'm sure 99% of us have the utmost admiration for the job the DJ's do and I would like to think that all pinkboarders respect the fact that any DJ who lists his or her playlist here not cop any cheap shots over what they did or didnt play.
Lets make it a pinkboard project guys and gals.... If you know any of
the other Sleaze DJ's give them a call today and ask them to post their
lists.

decent underground
music? well that narrow's it down... any particular style you were
thinking off? the sleaze dj's were a mixture of established and up and
coming talent - RHI was more a commercial, Hordern was trance and Stage
11 was darker tribal sound. Trance and Tribal can't really be
considered underground these days can they?
- awesome Jake - you are brave publishing your playlist. i just relived a few moments...thank you!
How come you played that track called "White Label" 3 times in the space of 3 hours ? :)

Thanks for your support mate. It actually wasn't that cold out in the
Galleria. NMG had placed 4 of those tall electric heater thingies

and warm as there was no breeze. I had a ball playing out there and
thanks to the people who came up to me with nice comments about the
music.

great sleaze ball;
but I want to bash the person who decided on NO DANCEFLOOR in the
Hordern; I danced to most of DJ Josh's set (luvvie, be a bit harder
next time for me will you? but you were v.good) and I had the worst
back ache at 4am from dancing on the bloody concrete floor; surely NMG
can provide flooring in both dance halls? and more seating inside as it
was too cold on the night to sit outside; And to the 2 spunky spanish
guys who gave me a chupa chups, thanks and hope you had a great party...Do any of you guys feel disappointed and let down that Mardi Gras dropped the tradition of announcing you at the beginning of your set or back announcing you at the finish of your set ?
I thought it was quite poor form that I couldnt give you guys the appluase you really deserved. Its not as though it costs much to hire a microphone is it ?
Opinions anyone ?
Mike R Fone - Thu 9 Oct 2003 20:05:52
As for Sleaze .....NMG it rocked and will figure as one of my all time favourite parties after last Mardi Gras Well done Guys!
Cuchullain - Thu 9 Oct 2003 20:37:01
The name of the guy playing in the downstairs bar at the Shift while you were queuing, was Guy.Think about it for a second... NMG needs to pay for a lot of Sleaze out of the tickets sales, so if tickets sales are tracking badly in the lead up to the event some hard decisions need to be about what can and can't be included in the sleaze event to ensure that NMG doesn't make a loss on the event. so if you lazy arses could be bothered to buy your tickets well in advance of the event NMG would have a greater certainty as to income and could ensure the party contains all the bells and whistles you demanding boys and girls want.
i have no idea if this is the reason why there was no dancefloor on the hordern... im just thinking the issue through a bit instead of automatically blaming NMG... i may be wrong, but it makes a lot of sense to me...
stop thinking about yourselves so much and think about the bigger picture.

Attention New Mardi Gras Party Committee -
A posting on the New Mardi Gras wall suggests that Sleaze made a $690,000 profit before tax.
With that sort of a windfall it surely opens up the opportunity at Mardi Gras 2004 to have a designated space for classics / retro music to be played all night.
Whilst I enjoyed snippets of the DJ's in the RHI on Saturday night I must admit I barely knew about 10% of the songs played. I'd like to see Mardi Gras have a decent sized hall dedicated to classics and hits of the past for all of the people (and there are thousands of us) who only go "out" to the big dance events and therefore don't know all the current doof doof club music that is currently being played on Oxford Street.
C'mon Mardi Gras, Youve stuck to the same formular for years of
RHI Commercial , Hordern Hard and Dome/Stage 11 dirty. Time for a new
angle please for us queens that dont fit into any of those 3 categories
and tend to roam aimlessly at dance parties not being able to find our
niche.

But I must say - no dance floor in the Horden didn't stop me having a dance and the soreness this caused only added to the rest of the sore bits I noticed over the past day or two (where the hell did these bruises on my legs come from ???)......
Thanks to all the boys in the RHI who made my night heaps and heaps of fun !!

Go look at the general meeting link on the mardi gras website and
have a look at the financial report attached to the proposed meeting
agenda to find out where the $690,000 figure comes from. it's not the
profits from sleaze.

I myself stopped going out every weekend a number of years ago due
to the fact that I felt I was getting a bit too old to trash myself
every weekend and also cause I found the man of my life who I have
settled down with in the suburbs.
On the rare occassions we now go out we know next to none of the music
that DJ's play.When I was a regular clubber I knew everything about
current dance music. I then found my man and of course ones priorities
change.
I still want to support the Mardi Gras and Pride run dance parties cause I know funds raised at these parties is for a good community cause but we havent been to one for a year because of the fact that we feel none of the halls plays music that we would find familiar or have fun with.
I would die and go to heaven if Mardi Gras next year had a
pavilion only playing music for "musically uneducated" people like us.
There are far more daggy non scene people around this town that want to
party that you could ever imagine. Just look at Caesars nightclub which
is now no longer. That place played straight out top 40 radio music and
it had over a 1,000 people in there every saturday night. Where are
those people now ? Nowhere, because they have nowhere to party at that
plays that sort of music.
Brian - Fri 10 Oct 2003 17:31:02
DJ ShiggyThis playlist then has to be handed over to I think APRA who then charge Mardi Gras some sort of fee.
Could somebody clarify this issue for me please because if lists are indeed supplied to APRA then those lists become public property and can be obtained due to the freedom of information act and then published on this web site for all to see ? Maybe One of the 3 DJ's that have already published their lists on pinkboard from last weeks Sleaze could tell us if they had to supply NMG thier listing for APRA ?
And to Jake Kilbys posting at JK - Sat 11 Oct 2003 00:30:05
I think your being VERY humble there saying you were "a little
disappointed". If I was a DJ and didnt get announced like it happened
at Sleaze last week I'd be devastated.
just a boi - Sat 11 Oct 2003 08:36:03
Hey Ms Golightly what nbr pic are you on grunt.com site ? just so can say hi next time.
Agree Marcus B - I had so many say they are over the parties/not going
to Sleaze blah blah blah but 1 week out they got caught up in the
excitement and rushed to buy tickets and guess what ? They are still
gushing what a fab time
they had. So much different to Oxford St, so much different to the
Clubs and pubs etc. So much a different
experience/feel..............well doh ! AND I pointed out that Oxford
St/Clubs etc are always there but this "donation" gives you a night out
plus gives NMG $'s............. I hope they have now
got the message
AND I hope the community is getting the message.
Paul Diamondo - I know people who enjoyed City Live as is but if we ever get
Dome back then it can go back to its own ways and City Live can go
Retro. I cant see Fox Studios being told what they can and cannot use
their venues for
so hopefully we'll have Dome back soon.
Now all we have to do is work on Pride NYE . They have started out
right by calling for DJ submissions. I HOPE they give the Hordern one
more go.
I think Pride should get SSO / SX to run front page stories on what they do ,
really remind everyone where the $'s go. Announce the party early and urge
the community to support and buy tickets early.
X amount of weeks before the party if the community does not support
them , they can move the venue to City Live or similiar etc.
Unfortunately this would greatly reduce their income stream but at least they will know the community doesn't give a STUFF.
Please PRIDE just give it one more go - Sat 11 Oct 2003 10:50:03
I've heard Dave Smith
play his "*knock-knock* It's me Dave, open up", ..."DAVE? DAVE'S NOT

...Marcus B - Sat 11 Oct 2003 17:27:20
A DJ's playlist is a personal thing. With some of the nasty comments thrown around on this wall, I um'd and aah'd about posting my playlist for a while before I thought "F*ck it" and posted it. It is each individual DJ's right to decide if they want to post theirs or not.
I know many DJ's who won't go near Pinkboard because they have suffered revolting and personal attacks on here before (me included, but I'm learning to not let it get me down). I'm sure there are DJ's from Sleaze included in this number. If they decide never to visit this wall and never to post their playlists, don't blame them. Blame the few people who come in here and cannot play nicely.
Not every DJ is to everyone's taste. Hell, I know I play too commercially for some people. But there is a difference between saying "that DJ doesn't play the style of music I like" and "that DJ is crap". Don't forget that DJ'ing is our job. Nobody likes to have their work criticised so if the minority of people that post attacking remarks on these walls can learn to be a little nicer, more DJ's may start to join in the conversation.
In saying that, it is good to see that the majority of people here are being positive. I believe NMG tried its best to have 3 different styles of music in 3 different halls, with a variety of DJ's, to try and cater for as many different tastes as possible. If people were not happy with the music in one hall, they had two others to choose from.
For future reference, the more ticket sales (and the earlier people buy
their tickets) the more money NMG has to spend on the party. More money
= more halls = more variety of styles = possible retro space (among
others)??? If ticket sales are low early on, NMG usually has to decide
by a certain date if it is going to use extra halls or can them to keep
the party more intimate. I know party fever usually kicks in in the
last week, but if everyone can make an effort to get their tickets
earlier this would ensure that NMG can provide us all with extra halls
as it knows it will have the numbers to fill them.
JK - Sat 11 Oct 2003 19:27:21
Can whoever posted this please tell me what it means ?
- Sat 11 Oct 2003 22:54:08
Well Brian I gave up
Oxford St about 10 yrs ago, in my mid 40's but love hardhouse and
trance so I want the Hordern staying the same way it is. Any song older
than 6 months never gets played by me again ! but realise othersIf people supported Sleaze and NMG and even Pride and like fickle queens leave it to the last week to buy tickets ,you cannot blame NMG if
- no chill out area
- not enough seats
- no dance floor eg Hordern this Sleaze
- not enough different music styles
There comes a time when decisions have to be made ie what to cut back on and the above list is a good example of what bites the dust.
Will the Community get the message ? I have a gut feeling they
won't till these organisations fold and then the screaming will start
but it will be
too late.
Just prove me wrong though - Sun 12 Oct 2003 11:56:12
As far as I know
APRA is not a government organisation. It is therefore not subject to
FOI laws. The purpose of collecting play lists is so that APRA can
organise royalty payments to performers. Any other use of play lists
without explicit permission of the DJs would be a breach of privacy.
I applaud the DJs brave enough to post their play lists here, even if I didn't applaud you on the night.
Arti - Sun 12 Oct 2003 12:27:32
There is no doubt that this was a great Sleaze for me. But it
wasn't without faults. That people wait till the last week to buy
tickets is a known phenomenom. Passing blame back to the punters (for
buying tickets?!?!sheesh!) will hardly create support for the committee
who in the end need to take these comments on board for next time.
Eil Twin - Sun 12 Oct 2003 13:03:32
I was suprised to see you and a few others post your playlists on here. I feel it's something personal to the DJ and it was a bold move by you all to do so.
As for personal attacks on here, I copped a lot of comments when I first started posting on here(under another name) from people who had never heard me play but decided to rip me apart anyway because I played songs not to thier liking. Some just attacked me because of my venue. Let's face it, I will play where I get paid. At the moment it's only the one club but I'm still new to this scene and have only been a DJ since the beginning of the year. I still have a lot to learn but I am improving all the time (according to my regular punters who are there each week).
Too commercial? I don't think so mate, you played what people wanted to hear. I had to laugh when one of the few negative comments about the music at Sleaze came from someone in LA who didn't even attend! I've spoken to a lot of people about your set and everyone who was there loved it, I'm looking forward to seeing you play again soon.
Some queens love to sit back and bitch just for the sake of it, but it is good to see so many positive comments about Sleaze. Even some of the negatives have been put forward in a constructive way.
I'm hoping the community gets behind NMG and the big parties continue for many years to come.
Dj Shanobear - Sun 12 Oct 2003 14:15:36
I must say, I am intrigued to know who you really are, Shanobear!
Hopefully I'll see you around and about sometime soon. Come and say hi
when you do.
JK - Sun 12 Oct 2003 16:13:38
NMG release tickets for MG early at the same time a voting sheet can be
placed in say SSO and those that buy early can vote for the DJ they
want in the middle set of each Hall ? You put your ticket number on the
voting sheet so that you only get 1 vote. NMG still picks the beginning
and ending DJ's ( of
course these can be voted on as well but upto NMG )
or
release tickets early at a cheaper price ? and then say 1 month before they
go up ?
Just trying to be constructive ? - Sun 12 Oct 2003 16:43:57

Neal Crawford - Sun 12 Oct 2003 21:28:29
Hey just getting
constructive...another idea would be for everyone who has provided feed
back on this board to go the extra step and actually e-mail NMG
directly, providing them with the direct feedback of what worked and
didn't work for the party (though i have to say there are few parties
in the past i remember being so overwhelmingly positively recieved as
sleaze 2003). I am sure the team that put it all together would
appreciate recieving the positive feedback, plus it will start laying
the ground work for a great mardi gras party.
e-mail is a powerful medium...for instance, i just sent a little
note to Millsy suggesting his performance on australian idol tonight
would have been stronger if he selected kids in america (can you
imagine those thin pouting lips pushing out "i search for the beat in
this dirty town"?!?!? ooh errr!!!)

Whats the point of emailing Mardi Gras your thoughts on a party when we all know they read it on here.
Whats the purpose of doubling up ?
Kim Wilde - Sun 12 Oct 2003 21:58:28
Bless your heart Ms Golightly! NMG is already an avid consumer of Pinkboard's musings. And....aren't we all? :)
- Mon 13 Oct 2003 10:08:48
It's not so much doubling up as providing a more detailed response than a pinkboard post. Plus it provides the opportunity to personally thank those who really did deliver a very good product. And finally, in terms of the decision making process for the next mardi gras party, what sounds more influential "well, 100 people on pinkboard said...." vis-a-vis "we recieved 100 e-mails asking for this to continue...".
For people who enjoyed the party, I just think it is a helpful dynamic in ensuring mardi gras party will be just as successful.
by the way, i think "Cambodia" is politically incorrect, but i have
overlooked it given the killer haircut in "love blonde".....yours
always and always yours

Just trying to be constructive ? - Sun 12 Oct 2003 16:43:57
I think it's always nice to be constructive but the ongoing reality is that people tend not to buy tix early unless there's a powerful incentive to do so - like the prospect of rapid sell-out. We know that Sleaze doesn't sell-out so that particular incentive isn't going to be there. That, in turn, provides a separate disincentive for buying early - you never know who is going to go until the last minute and many people put off buying until they know that people they want to party with are also buying. It's kind of a classic Catch 22. Lots of party organisers have tried the buy early/buy cheaper carrot over the years but it doesn't work without the additional 'stick' of rapid sell-out. And let's face it, if you've got rapid sell-out, you don't need a cheaper, earlier incentive.
NMG is therefore kind of obliged to work to a last minute upsurge in sales for both parties and has to budget/plan accordingly. The venue operator has proven to be amenable to a flexible venue add-on option/s, dependent on sales, and I think that's the prudent way to go. It actually makes for a more adaptable/flexible/finely-tuned approach to party management which is probably no bad thing in terms of honing NMG's act.
I doubt that flooring in the Hordern or the amount of seating are
actually all that numbers-dependent - they certainly shouldn't be. I
would have thought that it's a basic matter of OH&S observance to
ensure that there's a wooden dancefloor in space in any pavilion hired
for an all night dance party - likewise enough seating to give people
an opportunity for chilling out.

Neal Crawford, you cheeky bugger!
In the arguement over ticket prices to help sell tickets earlier, I am of the understanding that it is a difficult position for NMG. Yes, having cheaper prices earlier would encourage early sales, but bumping the price up closer to the event may then dissuade some people from buying tickets at the last minute. It's a tricky one.
Ms Golightly, I get the impression you are a fan of the early
works of Ms Wilde. I am as well, but what are your opinions of the 80's
Kim? In particular, my fave, "You Came" with "Never Trust a Stranger"
coming in at a close 2nd. Are you going to the Here and Now 80's
concert? Do you think Millsy will make it through tonight?
JK - Mon 13 Oct 2003 14:32:12
(in no particular order)
neal crawford - Mon 13 Oct 2003 14:55:08
I have more important things in my life to deal with.
Like who will be eliminiated from Australian Idol tonite.
It just better not be Guy.
- Mon 13 Oct 2003 15:07:05
It had better be Levi .....I must admit "You Came" is very good (probably 3rd fave song) - i actually use it as a potential boyfriend filter. If i play it for them and they laugh - well they're walking. If they look all whimsical and teary eyed, then...*catholic boy blush*....
Kids in America is firmly my favourite single, but it's probably more of an emotional attachment...i was in year 5 at school and my best 2 friends (chris and michael) and I formed a "tough club" where we use to smoke marlbro reds(didn't master the draw back to year 7 though), swear, steal bad straight porn, and generally act tough. For some reason "kids" was our theme song...not sure why, just everybody in the video seemed so moody and edgy.... even back then i had a visceral understanding of noir.
Yes to the here and now concert (but i will be taking my discman to listen to something else whilst mondo rock, 1927 and paul young are on) and yes to robbie williams as well (but only to see Duran Duran open)
And finally, Australian Idol...on performance alone, I don't think Millsy should get through, but I have been too busy posting on pinkboard today to send the 54,396 SMS's supporting the other contestants that would probably be required to offset the suburban teenage girls sending their parents mobile phone bill into the stratosphere voting for Millsy.
Cossima (sp?) will probably go...is it just me, or does she really look like Cherie Blair? Paulini to win!
Ms Golightly - Mon 13 Oct 2003 16:19:31
....ummmmmm, this IS actually the SLEAZE wall - what else are we gonna talk about here?
Cruze the other walls luvs - Mon 13 Oct 2003 16:33:53
"Why does it take 7500 tickets to break even?"
It's the point where the cost of hiring the venue and mounting the
party is matched by the income from tickets. And believe me: you can't
make a profit from a dance party crowd of less than 7,500-8,000 in the
RHI/Hordern.
- Mon 13 Oct 2003 16:54:48
Ms Golightly, you impress me. I too am attending Robbie Williams, strictly for the Duran Duran factor.
I hope Cosima doesn't go tonight. I am equally impressed with her and Paulini and hope to have it down to them in the final (although, which way I will vote if it comes to that, I have no idea). I'm not sure if Millsy's teenage fan club will get him through. He may last tonight, but I think he will go in the end. Shannon, Levi and Millsy are the least talented of the remainders (in my opinion). I'm not much for Guy, but he craps all over the other guys in the vocal department.
Inspector Klooso - I am not Rhiannon. I am me. If there is a
similarity between my writing style and that of Rhiannon, I would like
to meet her(or him?). However, rest assured, I am JK and JK alone.

and jk, re the opposite ends djs and friendship thing, i think it is much easier to have friends at opposite ends, gig-rivalry seems to be a big problem with a lot of djs in sydney (both scenes) at the moment, and the more likely you are to agree with someone says relating to music, the more people seem disinterested, threatened or whatever.
someone commented to me recently about arq, and how people
freak out when you say hello (interupting their drug induced flights of
fancy) if you don't know them. can i ask every pinkboard person to say
hello to someone they know, just for me, think of it as likenable to
donating grains of rice to impoverished children, but more in the
literal sense of re-introducing open-ness, friendship and happy party
environments into syd's gay clubs. ps making a fool of yourself is
fine... cool is all defined in how you pull it off:)

I have DJ friends who play completely different to me and I think that its great that people with diverse backgrounds, tastes and scenes can be friends, however, I am very close with all the DJ's who are from the same genre as myself. I think there is a lot of misconception in relation to this whole "DJ rivalry" thing. I don't feel competetive with any of my fellow DJ's. We all get picked for parties sometimes and othertimes we get overlooked. We all have residencies that enjoy a full dancefloor and then we all have residencies that that aren't so enjoyable. There isn't a huge amount of work out there, but I think most DJ's are doing ok at the moment. Of course, I can't speak on behalf of all my peers, but I could name a few DJ's who would probably be put into the same sort of category as me who are my closest friends.
I dunno JK, you both have very similar tastes in music

Please explain?
$750000 is a lot of costs - it wasn't visible on the night. One
dancefloor was mising, minimal pa in the Hordern and not much spent on
lights anywhwere. Where did it all go precisely? How much goes to Mark
Fordham's company? How much is he paid?
the collective - Mon 13 Oct 2003 18:31:33
I didn't get to spend much time in the other halls, but, did you go
into the RHI?!?! I don't think you can have if you can say not much was
spent on lights anywhere. I thought the lighting and visuals was
amazing in the RHI. In fact, my night wouldn't have been half as fun if
it hadn't been for the amazing job done by Brad Wright and his cohort.
It was plain to me where the money for the RHI was spent.
- Tue 14 Oct 2003 08:33:04
7500 * $90 = $675000
This includes GST, so the Government gets 10% of this, though that is offset by claiming GST on the costs.
Ticketek would then take it's cut for issuing the tickets, erecting and staffing the barriers, etc.
Then there is the venue, I would guess at least $150,000, possibly much higher.
Insurance is probably another $100,000.
Lights and sound probably a similar amount each.
That's $450,000 so far, not including Ticketek.
Then all the staging, dancefloor, seating, fencing, etc.
Security.
Entertainment and their costumes would take a slice.
Marketing costs money.
I'm sure there are lots of other little things which quickly add up.
Arti - Tue 14 Oct 2003 08:33:18
Dear jake, I think
you should next time play some of your own personal hits from the mid
90's Like JK's "Dont it make you feel alright" and your big hit "You
& I". They were just anthems in my opinion ;)
Then again you could move up from JK to the marvellous MK, she was such a diva

How much did Mark Fordham pay himself? How did his event company get the contract? How come he put all the work out to his straight mates?

"the collective " appears to have little clue about how NMG and other
large community organisations work, I suggest a little reading of the
MardiGras pinkboard woudl help answer the collective 's questioning.
How about the collective takes their questions to the MArdiGras pinkboard or even the NewMardiGras website
bored community member - Tue 14 Oct 2003 14:17:23
To the previous poster commenting on costs - there's a reason why our
community orgs are getting squeezed on party revenue. It's because they
are bloody expensive to put on!! In case you hadn't noticed, love,
there is a little bit more to putting on a party than a few coloured
spot lights and an Akai tape deck!!! The halls are empty shells. Do you
think all that rigging for lights, lasers, etc just magically appears?
EVERYTHING you see has to be hired and installed in the days before the
party and then removed after the party. All that costs money!

Mate, the process of appointing the PM was an open and advertised
tender. Whilst there may be concerns as to how suppliers were chosen,
not tendered, from that point onwards, to personally attack Mark
Fordham is just not on. He was appointed by the New Mardi Gras Board,
either directly or through their Working Group.

I've had a word with my mother and she has agreed to post less!Dear Mardi Gras Party Committee,
I believe Mark Orr should be the recipient of this email. Please pass it on
to him ASAP thank you.
Dear Mark,
I wanted to thank you and all of your sub committees in the recent putting
together of what I heard was an excellent Sleaze Ball. I'm now regretting
not making the decision to go as alot of my friends had excellent things to
say about the night in question.
My sole reason for not going is that I and my boyfriend dont think we "fit
in" anymore to these sorts of events. I'd refer you to a posting I made on
www.pinkboard.com.au recently where I described the fact that I didnt go was
because I feel Sleaze and Mardi Gras tends in the main to only to cater to
people who are regular scene people. Here is my pinkboard comment -
"The moment one stops becoming a regular scene clubbing person you very
quickly loose touch with what is considered current popular dance music.
I myself stopped going out every weekend a number of years ago due to the
fact that I felt I was getting a bit too old to trash myself every weekend
and also cause I found the man of my life who I have settled down with in
the suburbs.
On the rare occassions we now go out we know next to none of the music that
DJ's play. When I was a regular clubber I knew everything about current dance
music. I then found my man and of course ones priorities change.
I still want to support the Mardi Gras and Pride run dance parties cause I
know funds raised at these parties is for a good community cause but we
havent been to one for a year because of the fact that we feel none of the
halls plays music that we would find familiar or have fun with.
I would die and go to heaven if Mardi Gras next year had a pavilion only
playing music for "musically uneducated" people like us. There are far more
daggy non scene people around this town that want to party that you could
ever imagine. Just look at Caesars nightclub which is now no longer. That
place played straight out top 40 radio music and it had over a 1,000 people
in there every saturday night. Where are those people now ? Nowhere, because
they have nowhere to party at that plays that sort of music.
Brian - Fri 10 Oct 2003 17:31:02"
I have followed with great interest a number of other pinkboard posters who
also support the idea of a space that plays music for the oldies and the
daggs of this community (yes I am an oldie AND a dag, I get the double bunger award) -
Please give it some serious thought as in my humble opinion the idea has great merit. Please also give thought to putting this concept in a pavilion space (please dont put it in an "outside" area like Pride do at New Years).
Its time Mardi Gras looked towards a new concept instead of the old tradition RHI Commercial , Hordern Hard , Dome Dirty themes. A new hall with a new angle would be a great selling point for future events.
Anyway, Thats my opinion.
Keep up the great work - I and my partner hope to attend Mardi Gras 2004 on
the assumption that we might be catered to next year in the form of a
pavilion playing music from the 90's and even the 80's (God forbid even the
70's) !
Warmest Regards
Brian Jones

1) How many tickets were sold?
2) How much did the party cost to put on - insurance, pa hire, lights, floor, venue hire etc.?
3) How much did the party make?
4) How much did Mark Fordham’s event company charge New Mardi Gras to put on the party?
5) How much did Mark Fordham pay himself?
6) How much was left over for New Mardi Gras?
Rough estimates where vast amounts of money are rounded down to the nearest $10,000 is the pathway to ruin, again.
If it is true that NMG only gets $13 out of every $100 I would say they are being ripped off, and so are all the Mardi Gras volunteers whose labour profited a private company.
To lose one mardi gras may be regarded as a misfortune...to lose both seems like carelessness

Sleaze Ball was a financial and a production success. Does that bother you?
It is mischievous to speculate without the facts - it is also down right irresponsible to undermine a struggling community organisation based on assumptions and innuendo.
NMG are accountable to the membership and will report according to the constitution and normal corporate law. A look at the current financial document posted on their website gives me a lot of confidence in their ability to thrive and survive (which I assume the majority of people in our community want).
What makes you believe that we are to lose another Mardi Gras? Is their success too much for you to see!
Your repeated remarks about this Mark Fordham seems to indicate you have personal gripe. I recall seeing Party Production tenders openly advertised early this year for Sleaze and MG 2004. I (as a member) would expect that the process was managed honestly and transparently. If you are a member why not just ask NMG directly.
As for how much any supplier or contractor or staff member is paid, this information could be commercially sensitive and is more than likely contractualy agreed for non-disclosure (a stock standard commerciail practice that most companies do to protect their commercial intelligence - and I would hope that NMG would act responsibly and do the same).
Subverting the confidence of the many volunteers that NMG rely on to deliver these events would seem to be quite irresponsible as well.
I had a great time, I danced, I felt great to see NMG do what
everyone said they would not - succeed. Well done. Bring on 2004 Party.
Congratulations to the Board and Volunteers, and talented professionals
that made Sleaze 2003 a massive success.

answer them correctly, or are you simply too gutless to approach NMG,
Mr Fordam, or your own personal issues face on. Otherwise babe, sit
