Pinkboard Sleaze Ball 2002 Graffiti Wall

Get your uniforms ready cause Sleaze is almost here. It almost wasn't, but now it will be. Pride has agreed to stage Sleaze for this year. It will be a back to basics party with only 8000 tickets available. Those who have already purchased tickets will have those tickets honoured.

If you would like to see Mardi Gras continue in some shape or form then make sure you support this community fundraiser. This is the time to show you care about the community.

So get your badges polished and your creases ironed and present yourself for inspection and dancing at the Horden and Dome on Saturday 5th October. Tickets are not available quite yet.

The uniform is the Uniform of Riding Staff of The Spanish Riding School of Vienna

Regional Queen - Sat 31 Aug 2002 09:34:14 - You can also support it. Buy two tickets and donate them to BGF and they can give them to someone who couldn't otherwise afford them.

You can kill two birds with one stone. Help out MG as well as giving someone else a good time!
...now don't let me hear any queens saying that that's just not value for money. - Sat 31 Aug 2002 10:09:20

As a very gay-friendly straight boy who doesn't hassle GLMGA members to get them a ticket, I am pleased Pride is hosting Sleaze ... it makes me feel welcome and have not missed a Pride party in 15 years, to the best of my memory!

TELL US THE DJ LINEUP DONT HOG IT ALL TO YOURSELF SHHHHEEEEEEEEESH !!!!
- Thu 5 Sep 2002 21:05:41
The Real DJ Line up for Sleaze is Hordern - Anthony Whitlock then Luke Leal and Kate Monroe to close. I dont know about the Dome at this stage... stay tuned !
countdownboy - Thu 5 Sep 2002 22:18:17
Pinkboard is unable to verify this statement.
Relax Thu 05 Sep 2002 17:57:58 - Pride will have to go with proven/mainstream
DJ's. Get off your high horse, stop the moaning and go. Luke Leal suits me , he
can play handbag and hardhouse ( my fave ). They will have to play a little bit
of everything so everyone gets that moment when the music was their fave.
Relax - Fri 6 Sep 2002 08:17:15
From what I heard, the Dome is Ben Drayton, Mandy Rollins, and Garry Tee.
- Fri 6 Sep 2002 09:36:48

I heard the same thing about the Dome line up. Very glad Kate Monroe is closing. I have always liked her sets, especially Pool Party!

Can't wait for Sleaze now. Got my costume all organised and every intention of saving a little bit of money for drinks!!!

Is there going to be one of those orgy parties afterwards cause I'd love to go to one if anyone has an invite for me! ;)
SEX BOMB - Fri 6 Sep 2002 19:43:41

Dear Sex Bomb, please have your orgy AT Sleaze. That's what Sleaze is all about surely. Let this party be back to down and dirty GLTB action.
PaulD - Fri 6 Sep 2002 22:13:39
PaulD, the girlfriend and I will be contributing to that very cause in a real "hands on" kind of way :-)

As for the DJ line up, it gets a resounding "whatever" from us. I'm sure they'll all be doing their best anyway. It's not like they start out with the intention of playing a crap set. With two venues at least one can wander a bit until the music suits.
Evil Twin - Sat 7 Sep 2002 11:47:28

Hey PaulD, I didn't say I wasn't going to have one at Sleaze!!! I'm looking for one after the party's over! ;p

GC, thank you so much for demanding what "us people" should be doing at a dance party. Please hang a big sign on yourself when you get to Sleaze so that I can stop having dirty casual sex with strangers as soon as I see you approach (I was going to say "coming").
Evil Twin - Sun 8 Sep 2002 14:57:29

Evil Twin - Im not going caused I'm burnt out on dance parties and a smaller Sleaze run by Pride just doesnt get me excited in any way shape or form. Time for a break.

PaulD - Sun 8 Sep 2002 19:48:34
Thats not the attitude Countdownboy - remember its also for the survival of the future MG in whatever form it finally becomes. If you dont support now there may be nothing for the future and nothing for you to do a countdown on.
Hey GC - if you dont wanna do it - dont but dont press your rules onto others.
DJ's sound fine but little worried about Kate Monroe following Luke Leal ? Not knocking Kate but her music of late tends to be lounge music and Luke is a
faster beat, might be a big come down for some unless you've dropped a valium.

let's be reasonable people and a little kind. pride has had to produce this party is a very little amount of time so let's not go criticising a relatively smallish organisation run by volunteers OK? has anyone bothered to thank them?

also, does the dj line-up etc really matter? why don't we just go and have a good time. recently life has been very tough for everybody with the mardi gras demise so here's a chance to go and blow some steam and have a jolly good time.
let's be a little reasonable - Mon 9 Sep 2002 22:12:43

Just for the knockers who dont think I'm being supportive of Mardi Gras by not attending Sleaze ball this year here are a few facts -
1. I pre-purchased a Sleaze ticket at FULL price from Mardi Gras before they went bust - Did you ?

2. Ive held a membership card for SGLMG since the 1st year that membership was introduced - Have You ?

3. I purchased this ticket on the assumption that SGLMG were running the party. Now that another mob is doing running the event I reserve my own judgement on whether I want to attend or not. Ive bought my ticket , Ive made my contribution to SGLMG , whether I want to use that ticket or not is my business.

4. I have been to every Mardi Gras and Sleaze Ball since 1992 - I think I'm entitled to take a night off, don't you ?

I'm insulted that someone might suggest that I'm not supportive of Mardi Gras.

All apologies can be addressed to me in writing at countdownboy@hotmail.com

And I'm serious about finding your own gimmick and nickname "NEW" Countdownboy. Just copying me only shows your total lack of imagination. Imitation is also the finest and ultimate form of flattery in case you didnt know ;)
countdownboy - Tue 10 Sep 2002 16:01:55

Pride have posted the list of DJs for the night. They are the same as the rumours above. See the site for the specific music styles they will be playing.

Tickets are also now available from the Pride Centre, Toolsheds, Central Station Records, Sax Leather and also in Melbourne. You will need to sign a declaration when you purchase the tickets.
Panther - Tue 10 Sep 2002 17:56:06

If you're reading this wall and are unsure how to support a future entity you should buy a ticket to Sleaze Now. Or buy one to brighten up someone else's life if you would prefer to be elsewhere on the night of this discussion ewall.

That rates a mention and question of WHY someone not interested in going to a hot and sweatly sexual experience would bother to write on this wall but I guess most of us will be going to dance, see friends and find people like you?

Think green & gold with just a touch of black
Will you be there? - Tue 10 Sep 2002 22:00:52

Dear old Countdown boy,

1. People are saying that you aren't supporting MG because you have ceased your endless countdowns the one time they are actually needed. There have been countless objections in the past to your boring and over-enthusiastic countdowns previously, the one time people are asking for you to do what you so irritatingly do all the time, you stop. How childish.

2. Thank you for supporting MG with your financial contribution of buying your Sleaze ticket. Every cent count (see below).

3. No, I haven't attended every Sleaze since they started as I was only 11yrs old at the time.

4. Yes, you do deserve a night off. Perhaps your enthusiam has waned because you are getting old and need to move over for the next generation to strut their stuff. Don't worry we'll dedicate a song in your honor and boogey under the mirror ball for you.

5. I'm not gonna find a new gimmick. Perhaps you could sue me for "passing off" on your gimmick ;) .....oh and one final point.....

6. There are only 24 days to go!!! Buy your tickets early, buy often your tickets often!! There are only 24 days to go!!! Buy your tickets early, buy often your tickets often!! There are only 24 days to go!!! Buy your tickets early, buy often your tickets often!! There are only 24 days to go!!! Buy your tickets early, buy often your tickets often!! NEW Countdown boy - You'll get no apology from me honey. - Wed 11 Sep 2002 00:28:07

Oh and I forgot to add. Yes imitation is the finest form of flattery. So you should take it as a compliment instead of suing me. I'm just a young thing and can't afford the legal fees ;)

New countdown boy. You're an idiot. Give it a rest
justaboi - Wed 11 Sep 2002 08:24:10
Go for it New Countdown boy - and the original countdownboy , this is the one time when support is needed, not a dummy spit. Have a night off next year or the year after when the new MG is finalised. I have attended every Sleaze since the late 80's ( I was 6yrs old ), I too have my SGLMG Sleaze tkt but Pride are accepting them so what was your point there ? I too have been a member since it was introduced. No apology will be emailed.
Support NOW , dummy spit later - Wed 11 Sep 2002 09:29:31
that's fine. Just buy a ticket (or two)

why go at such an monetary expense..
- Wed 11 Sep 2002 11:04:00

altho i think it's great that pride have stepped into the breach, i'm annoyed that i don't even get the option for a refund of my earlybird tix, even tho the event that i was originally 'sold' is considerably different from the one that will now be held.
i want the old sleaze back! - Wed 11 Sep 2002 12:57:04
To "why go at such an monetary expense" - yeah and you will be the first to scream when there is no Launch no Fairday no Parade. Sleaze and MG Party are the cash cows that support these and a lot more..........besides some uniforms
are definately Sleazy or were you gonna wear a Maccas uniform ? You can virtually here every DJ in Australia for free at some time of the year.
Drop the attitude and support NOW - Wed 11 Sep 2002 13:22:00
I went to the Pride link and read the description of what the Hordern DJ's are going to play at Sleaze ?

The one that got me raising an eyebrow was Luke Leals description that he was going to play energetic and familiar.

The word familiar is what gets me raising this question.... Familiar to whom ?

Familiar to those people who are clubaholics who go out every single weekend or familiar to the huge number of punters that only go out 4 or 5 times a year and wont have a clue what Luke is playing if he plays his normal "familiar" stuff.

A song doesn't become familiar just because in your role as a DJ you play it every night in your club or home, a song has familiarity when its played on the radio and on the TV video programmes so that it reaches the general populus that are not serial drug taking week in week out club people.

Lets get a bit more specific please, and here is to hoping that people like me that only go out every couple of months get our musical senses catered to not just by Luke but all the DJ's at Sleaze Ball 2002. Am I asking for too much ??
Kylie Minogues Love child - Wed 11 Sep 2002 15:38:57

Money, money, money, that's all people seem to think about these days. what ever happened to community spirit?

If the original MG riots were to happen now, I bet half these losers wouldn't even stand up for their rights because it's just not value for money fighting for decency.
See you under the mirror ball - Wed 11 Sep 2002 16:42:18

AND to "i can hear these dj's for free..."
Geeze!!!
There is some truth to the old adage, you get what you pay for! I am sure the DJ's perform better when they can "bounce" off the energy that the larger crowds bring. As for the money...Is it just me that feels that we are at the thin end-of-an-era and these events are "priceless"?? I always forget the cost and still enjoy the memories for ages after!
I see all Pride events as very worthy fund-raisers, anyway!

So I hope to see ya there when you reconsider!!
Straight-mate - Wed 11 Sep 2002 17:38:47

Why is Pride selling only 8000 tickets (assuming this is true)? Why not 10,000 or 12,000 or 14,000? Will people be turned away at this crucial time? Surely the Hordern and Dome can cope with bigger numbers? I love rubbing against hot sweaty bodies. Space between flesh is very non-Sleaze surely?

- Thu 12 Sep 2002 08:09:10
To Kylie Minogues Love Child - that is your interpretation of familiar. DJ's tend to have a following and yes they are the clubbers/party goers not a DJ on
the radio. Its great you are attending ( are you ? ) but you have to realise the DJ's know what songs are best by the crowds reaction ie if the dance floor is full or if the bleachers are full and dance floor empty. They cannot see your reaction listening to a radio. I am hoping for a couple of sets of hi-nrg/hrd-nrg/hardhouse, something I rarely get on the radio but which goes off with a large crowd ( and yes just as handbag does as well but pass on that set ).
Fingers crossed - Thu 12 Sep 2002 08:50:07
My only concern is Kate Monroe following Luke. Not knocking Kate but doesn't she
play a slower beat ? we dont take things that slow us down. Just think it might
too big a change in style.
What is Kate like now ? - Thu 12 Sep 2002 13:15:35
Kate is still one of my favourite sydney DJs- its not the speed of the beat that counts for me but the quality of the tunes themselves & Kate always plays good tunes- and in my opinion I imagine her set will be highlight of my night! I'm still looking forward to hearing all the other DJs & partying with fellow 'no attitude' clubbers!!!
sxc - Thu 12 Sep 2002 15:42:24
I hope the place will be packed of sxc's!!
- Thu 12 Sep 2002 17:12:59
Kate Munroe is highly inappropriate to close the Hordern Pavilion at Sleaze Ball. You need to finish with energy and a bang. Kate's normal music is funky and housey. Totally wrong to finish the main room with. What were Pride thinking allowing this to occur ?
peter j - Thu 12 Sep 2002 20:07:14
This is the opinion of the poster.
Thanks Peter J - thats what I thought - and this is not slagging off Kate everyone just worried about the sudden change of styles and its a big change. I really like Luke and the hi-nrg sets and thought Kate was now more house/funky. Oh well home early.
Cant wait for Sleaze - Fri 13 Sep 2002 08:44:25
Just a reminder that there are only 22 days to go.........
- Fri 13 Sep 2002 11:04:37
I have always wondered the split between House/funk-heads vs. Hi-nrg/Hardhouse-heads??. Personally, I prefer funkier stuff at the beginning and end of the night...sort of like a journey...mind you, I am geting old!
I think Kate will be responsive to the crowd and make adjustments where appropriate. Looks like everyone takes their music seriously, great!
Straight-mate - Fri 13 Sep 2002 13:02:09
Hi-Nrg/trance is embarrassingly DEAD. the minority of sydney queens that refuse to acknowledge that fact need to "build a bridge & get over it"

The SSO this week actually said 9000. I don't know if this is a mistake, or it is actually a meaningful figure. I think this number is achievable, but not much more. Lots of people will choose between Sleaze and the Games.
Arti - Sun 15 Sep 2002 10:39:26
NEW CB: you said there was 21 days to go when actually it was 20 (you logged your message at 1.30am). The original countdown boy wouldnt have made such a cock up of an error. Either do the job right or dont do it at all new cb. Personally i think you should get your own gimmick as well.
sick of plagiarism - Sun 15 Sep 2002 14:01:37
I’m certainly going to Sleaze and can’t wait.

Just so people aren’t inadvertently misled, however, as far as I am aware not one cent of the profits is going to the new MG. Half is going to the old MG to pay debt and half is going to Pride. Pride can do what it likes with its half and may well be making a donation to the New MG, perhaps of part, perhaps of the whole lot. However, I am not aware that any intention to do so has been announced as yet.

If people want Sleaze to benefit New MG, they should:

1. Give feedback to Pride that this is a good use for at least some of the money.

2. Pressure venues making a motza out of recoveries and not supporting community orgs to make very substantial donations to the New MG. Don’t give them your business if they’re not supporting the community.

Of course, you can also make a donation to the New MG yourself.

Hey Straight-mate I agree with you. I think the night goes much better if it starts funky, gets harder then ends really happy and funky again. Not all the people that go to the party want to end the night with trancey, mega-bass stuff as it doesn't lift the mood of the crowd enough. As was said above we should end with a bang but a high happy one not just a loud beat. I think Kate is more than appropriate to end the Hordern although the last Dj in the dome told me he'll be closing with one of my favourite songs, so i might miss her closing. :(

See you all there. I'll be going off as per usual. Got the outfit all ready!!!
SEX BOMB - Sun 15 Sep 2002 18:53:04

is Gary T finishing with his scratched CD copy of Janet Jackson "If" (brothers in rhythm mix) that jumps & skips all over the place ? I love watching the crowd try to catch the beat everytime he plays it.
Dr Bellows - Sun 15 Sep 2002 21:38:27
Ive got that cd in my collection. Top mix that was in its time. A bit slow for these days only being 119bpm, I wonder if Gary wants to burn my copy... it isnt scrathed :P

alternative thinker - Sun 15 Sep 2002 23:43:55
Hey Puke Peel - you build a bridge and get away from Caesars ! Every party I have been the crowd screams/smiles and goes off on a hrd-nrg/hardhouse set. To me when its funky/housey they crowd is more mellowed. The comment others are making is just the big jump of styles at around 5am, nothing more and certainly not knocking the DJ's. Same diff if you were dancing to your preferred - presume handbag ? then suddenly whack straight into a hrd-nrg set, big jump in
styles. You obviously haven't been to the Hordern for the last few years at MG
and Sleaze. Sure its only the 2nd biggest of the Halls and its packed so doubt
you dumb statement about hrd-nrg/hardhouse being dead.......

Hey International Observer - Australia made the mould for dance parties and the rest of the world follows ! Let me guess - from the USA ? Oh and out of my group of approx 20 who go, not one gets trashed so dont lump everyone into your
assumptions because you see a few hundred trashed people. Our big parties attract
10,000 to 23,000 so trashed people are not the majority.

What is it with everyone ? do they really want MG in whatever form to disappear off the earth ? can just imagine the screams when there is no Launch no Parade
( or the watered down version some are talking about ) no Fair Day etc.
Oh well WE tried. WE bought our tickets. WE showed our support.
Give a complacent queen a slap - Wed 18 Sep 2002 11:47:43
5,600 tickets still to sell! Is this achievable? Maybe people always leave these things to the last minute. Please please everyone encourage everyone you know to get behind this party. Half empty halls will be too awful for words.
PaulD - Wed 18 Sep 2002 18:06:13
But buying a ticket to Sleaze won't do anything towards saving MG...50% profits go to the old debt and 50% to Pride. I'm going to sleaze and looking forward to it but I'm also going to make a donation to the new MG account. That is what will save MG. (Incidentally will Pride be donating any of their 50% slice of profit to NMG? If they donated some of their proceeds then tickets for sleaze will go towards helping NMG!)

Boo Hoo it looks like I wont get back for Sleaze but I am going to but i am gunna buy a ticket and give it to a friend who otherwise may not be able to go but will get into all the trouble and more that i normally would)
BND - Thu 19 Sep 2002 20:23:38
Thu 19 Sep 2002 10:38:17 - Any debt that is paid off the old MG actually lowers the price that the administrators will accept for the remaining assets of old MG. eg. If MG owes say $10 to creditors and Sleaze gives them $2 towards that $10 debt, then the Administrators will be happy to sell the remaining assets for $8.

The trade mark might not be worth anything to anyone else, but the physical assets ie. props, equipment and Fred's head are worth a bundle to alot of people.
- Thu 19 Sep 2002 22:40:10

Oh dear, looks like the party will only get around 4000 people, theres only 2 weeks to go!

So is this the death of big dance parties?
- Fri 20 Sep 2002 10:42:37

Thu 19 Sep 2002 22:40:10 I take your point about the assets but suspect the price of old MG's assets will be dictated by who wants to pay how much for them as there is no chance of getting 100c in the dollar anyway. I think the ealier poster was right to state that this money doesn't go to NMG unless Pride ultimately decides to donate some money to it and people should donate to New Mardi Gras (which doesn't mean they shouldnt go to Sleaze). If NMG has no money it will have no chance of buying the assets even at a modest price. It ia important that people not be misled into thinking they have done their bit for NMG by buying a ticket. Buy a ticket because it will be fun (and might be the last of these parties if it's not a success) then support NMG in other ways.
still magic - Fri 20 Sep 2002 14:21:18
No its not the death of big dance parties. It maybe for the gay scene who were the leaders but Gatecrasher / Ministry of Sound attract the 15,000's to their parties. Pity they are at Homebush Bay as would consider if at Fox. I laugh when posters say dance parties or gay dance parties have had it. They havent by far. Back in the 80's/90's the gay scene were the leaders and straights flocked to them.......now they have their own parties. Pick up a straight mag like 3D and they are having them every weekend. So the dance scene is not dead, just highly fragmented. MG and Sleaze promote themselves as biggest parties etc but feel they should also promote the smaller venues so people can have the small and cosy venues. Regulars know whats there but new people just see this huge
promo featuring RHI/Hordern. Horden is my fave Hall but I know a lot who just
dont realise how small and more intimate Dome or City Live actually are.
My point of view anyway - Fri 20 Sep 2002 15:19:24
I spend 80% of my time in the Dome. It is delish at 4am - all snuggly and intimate and HOT! Specially in the middle!
PaulD - Fri 20 Sep 2002 18:32:30
Fri 20 Sep 2002 10:42:37 - I disagree. I think at least twice as many will sell in the next 2 weeks. As an even gets closer, people get more excited.

Why wouldn't someone who lives in Sydney NOT go to these parties.. They are a part of our community something we can all look forward to... I don't do the scene so these parties are more fantastic for me as they are not the same as going out every weekend... the music the people the venue every part of these fantastic nights + the money it raises for our community is what it is really all about... Do you feel you have to get something off your chest? Or is there some other reason?
Arti - Tue 24 Sep 2002 19:44:09
Arti -

Q: I asked why you are reading this wall if you are not interested in going to Sleaze ?

A: I'm reading this wall because its a public graffiti wall.

Q: Why you are posting on it ?

A: Because I can.

Q: Are you deliberately trying to ruin it for others ?

A: No, but if by expressing my honest opinion its ruining it for others then I'd say those others are a little bit too precious & need some thicker skin.

Q: Do you feel you have to get something off your chest ?

A: Yes. That Sleaze this year is a waste of time and money due to the fact that Pride are running the event and that Pride parties in my opinion are sloppily put together and run by people with hidden agendas.

Q: Or is there some other reason ?

A: See above.
Bucketboy - Tue 24 Sep 2002 20:35:33

Hey guys! Where are all the posts of how excited you are that your going to Sleaze or what fun you had at last Sleaze(s) and not this rant on what people should and shoudn't be supporting/going to. I'm going to Sleaze cause I want to go to a dance party but not to support MG. The fact that it does is an added bonus. Most people who don't want to go aren't not going cause they don't want to support MG, but they don't want to go to this dance party. It might not interest them. I wouldn't go to a Barry Manilow concert, no matter what charity it supported, either; as it's not my thing.

If your going to Sleaze; have a fantastic night. I'll see you there.

If your not going to Sleaze; have a fantastic night doing whatever you do.

community charities - for those living with AIDS , for those that need help etc.
Have you not had a friend with HIV in need ? or they received help from BGF ?

PaulD - Sun 29 Sep 2002 11:36:25
Trouble is PaulD, I would say majority of these guys are young and have never needed support groups etc hence the carefree attitude. Not knocking this attitude but if only they could support something like 4 parties a year ie
NYE,MG,Queens Birthday,Sleaze. Just 4 parties a year and your monies go a long way to helping out others. You can still attend the other parties on other weekends.
Oh and to that guy Bucketboy - I'm glad some posters are taking the piss out on you. Your right that abuse is the lowest form of wit - but your so called higher intelligence has missed the point - this is the Sleaze Ball Party Wall for those going to Sleaze to chat about. There are other walls for you to go and debate and show them how good/bad you are. This is just fun wall so lay off.
4 weekends a year is all you have to support - Sun 29 Sep 2002 14:40:16
Re ther last post - Sun 29 Sep 2002 14:40:16

Why should i HAVE TO support the 4 dance parties in question ? It doesnt matter how much money these events give to causes or support groups if the bottom line is that you dont want to go or even worse as is the case with this years sleaze ball the event is a waste of time and money.

Its no use ramming your causes down my throat if I dont want to spend my hard earned dollars going to a dud event like this "No name brand" done on the cheap Sleaze ball.

Im sure when you were young like me that you didnt give a toot about gay charities and support groups. Now you are older and you do care about these issues. Maybe when Im old I'll care a bit more but until then let me live my life. I'll go to the events I want to go to for one reason only and this because I WANT TO GO and <u>NOT because others say I should go.</u>
The Bucket - Sun 29 Sep 2002 15:27:01

Paul D,
actually if you check the QN flyer, they give the proceeds from the cloakroom to Bobby Goldsmith, and QN is usually packed so they must make a fair bit. Also home has always supported gay charities they just haven't advertised the fact. And apart from being just another club, it's also a business.
D.C - Sun 29 Sep 2002 15:39:34
I was driving today listening to the radio and Nova are actually giving away Sleaze tickets as prizes!!! What is the deal with this??? Surely Pride arent that desperate to start getting promotion by giving tickets to a middle of the road straight radio station?

If Pride are indeed giving Sleaze Tiks away on Nova then its a sad sad day for G&L parties. Pride dont have the right to do this to the good name that the party title "Sleaze Ball" has generated over the years. All they are doing is possibly making this event accessible to people that shouldnt be going to this event. Giving free tiks away on straight media radio stations cheapens the event in everyones eyes. Pride being cheap, now theres a recurring theme if ever Ive heard one !

Next thing you know Pride will be offering free tickets as the booby prize in the Rooty Hill RSL Meat tray raffle !!

Shame on you all at Pride , shame on you.

The Bucket - Sun 29 Sep 2002 15:27:01 - People are NOT saying YOU SHOULD GO. They are saying YOU SHOULD SUPPORT IT! There is a difference between the two.

Countdown boy ceased his countdowns because he had similar opinions to yourself (long lost twin brothers??) just when his countdowns were needed most - and then got pissed off when someone else decided to take over the much needed job!

How much effort does it take to pull a party down? Probably as much effort as it takes to promote a party in all the subtle ways community members do. If you don't like the party - fine! - but don't waste your energy pulling it down otherwise people will think that you've got an agenda
- Mon 30 Sep 2002 10:31:21

disgusted - Sun 29 Sep 2002 23:51:49 - perhaps Pride are doing this because the ticket sales for Sleaze are down this year (no doubt due to some hecklers in the back row). And perhaps they think that they might improve ticket sales by targeting the larger community. Pride unlike other organisations has never had a problem with straight people.
- Mon 30 Sep 2002 10:34:30
Disgusted - who the hell do you think funds these parties? Who do you think actually purchases tickets that funds the organisations we need? STRAIGHT PEOPLE.

Of all the ridiculous things to criticise a community groups over. Please! I applaude any community organisation for trying to promote its events, activities etc etc to the more mainstream community. That's how you get inclusion. You post really was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever read.

thats right
IF WE DONT WANT TO GO

why would a pushy comment from '4 weekends a year is all you have to support'
make me...

i want to go to something with real ooomph with great dj and entertainment..with style and quality productions...the straight scene throws so many more better parties than the gay ones ... the gay promoters skimp on everything to make a buck these days...they know the gay will drug fuck themselves so important things like sound lighting, shows, performers + are done as cheap as possible...
want to beleive but time has jaded the whole thing (and selfishness) - Mon 30 Sep 2002 15:38:24

Can anybody confirm this NOVA giveaway? I can't imagine Pride giving tickets to NOVA - am I being too innocent? Could NOVA buy some tickets and give them away without Pride's approval? Perhaps there is another party on the Long Weekend called "sleaze"? The name "mardi gras" has already been hijacked. There are now lots of "mardi gras" parties, club nights over the "Mardi Gras Long Weekend" (has anyone told Bob Carr that the first weekend in March has been declared a public holiday?!) - have a look at a copy of 3D World towards the end of February. Anyway, anybody out there can confirm / deny this NOVA giveaway?

who makes the decision to put one dj on all day...f*#k them - how boring will that be...

someone help sydney nightlife - Mon 30 Sep 2002 15:46:25

Disgusted: let me get this right. You have a problem with an organisation that had 5 weeks to produce a party promoting themselves to a more mainstream audience when it has been these audience that:

1.) patron the event

2.) fund GLBT organisations.

Your post was nothing more than an unfounded vicous attack. I am appalled that this wall is filled with so much hate at a time when the community desperately needs our support. To those who have been positive and / or constructive, I've really enjoyed your comments.

Sleaze is almost here. The theme is fantastic, poster looks great, DJ line up is sound. What is the problem? If Pride didn't take on the event we probably would have criticised them for that too.
Reality Check - Mon 30 Sep 2002 16:32:44

The graffitti wall is an interesting read. It summarises alot. This year's Sleaze is different...as we are entering different times. I believe this makes this Sleaze extremely portentious, indeed akin to some of the first parties that were acts of defiance and struggle.

Remember this: Economic change is immediate. Political change is slow. And social change is very, very , very slow.

P.S And I mean "real" social change not whimsical fascinations and/or marketing fetish.

Well it's almost here ... and I've read all your petty little bitchy comments to each other and all I can say is.....

I CAN'T WAIT UNTIL THIS WEEKEND AND I AM GOING TO HAVE A FUCKING GREAT TIME!!!!

Most of my friends aren't going -- that's ok I'll make new ones.
There might be straight people there -- that's ok, I'll flirt with them anyway.
It might be smaller -- that's ok, around 4:30 I usually get lost anyway.
I was listening to Nova -- and I was excited that they were giving away tickets.
I'm going to go to Queer Nation -- This is where some of my friends will be ... I'll bring the straight boy I picked up from Sleaze along too!
When you hear on Monday about how much fun we all had -- I hope I hear you say "Well I didn't want to go anyway" ... and I will laugh at you !!!!

I'm glad some of you aren't going -- I know that all the people that are there are the ones that REALLY want to have fun, they want to be there, with me, dancing on the dancing floor.

I'M READY TO HAVE SOME FUN

This sort of energy and excitment is what makes party time in Sydney a wonderful experience. Never mind all the nasty nellies out there who simply want to have a gripe at any organisation. If not ACON, then why not Pride?

Last year I lost my best friend and it scares me to think just how quickly someone can be snatched away from you. You ask how this is related to Sleaze? Its because one of the clearest memories I have is us dancing around in some corner of the hordern to some awful trashy song sometime between dawn and dusk clinging to each other like there was no tomorrow, stupid grins on our faces thinking that THIS was what life was about. As the cliche goes, life is what you make of it. Live life to the fullest because you never know when that'll get taken away from you(or from your closest friend in the world). I for a fact wont be staying at home only to regret it on Monday, because for you or one of your friends, monday may never come. Love ya always Justin x.

I'm off to Sleaze with 3 friends and wouldn't miss it for the world. The Dome is one of my favourite places in the world. I can close my eyes and see scenes there from parties 3,4,5 years ago as if they were yesterday. They vary anyway. Nothing has ever capped Homo Sutra for me. Remember those golden boys and silver girls? (or was it the other way round?). This one won't be spectacular I guess but there'll still be hot sexy half-naked guys smiling and dancing and having a fabulous time!

I'm looking forward to having more money in my bank account this weekend cause I'm not wasting it on this Sleaze Ball which I think is going to be a big downer on previous parties at Fox Studios. All those saved dollars of mine will be put to much better use during the gay games. Thank You.

Good choice 'wise old owl' - we dont want sad faces walking around the halls.
Sure its gonna be smaller than last parties, lighting probably wont be as good but at least its on and I hope they can at least make a profit out of it and at least its not those fvcking Oxford St clubs that cram so many in you cant even
move let alone dance.
Lets party.......... - Wed 2 Oct 2002 13:19:46
I hope you have fun at sleaze and i hope you dont get bombarded by any old out of place out of date ridiculous Dolly Parton tracks by Kate Munroe when she plays the closing set as was the case last time she played the Hordern. As for me, well Im very happy not going cause I know i'll have twice as much fun at the gay gaymes closing party !!!!
Yummy Tourists !!! - Wed 2 Oct 2002 15:01:51
Good to see some positive people on this board at last. I think Sleaze will be a blast, going with a group of about 20 people and will be kicking on through to the next day. Any rumors about a backroom happening?
bring it on. - Wed 2 Oct 2002 17:29:15
Pride has never bothered with creating designated spaces for sex at their parties. Just like they have totally overlooked ALOT of important things in the organisation of their parties. I'd be very surprised If they create a designated sex space at Sleaze, I hope I can be proven wrong. I strongly suggest if you are looking for sex at sleaze that you make your own imaginative arrangements (provided the fox studio morality police dont swoosh you away). Its gonna be a bit hard trying to have sex in halls that will be only half full !!
Toca - Wed 2 Oct 2002 17:40:00
A couple of weeks ago there was an article in the Star that quoted someone from Pride saying there would be lots of "nooks and crannies" for people to explore.
- Wed 2 Oct 2002 21:26:48
Toca: you may want to check your facts and actually KNOW what you are talking about. There will be a sex space at Sleaze. In fact, there will be 2. One for the boys and one for the girls.

If you had bothered to read anything or simply pick up the phone and ask them, you would have known.
- Thu 3 Oct 2002 07:14:14

To Thu 03 Oct 2002 07:14:14 - since when did most of the posters ever bother getting off their arses and going out into the real world. 90% of the dribble and complaints on this wall are from people like Toca and bucketboy etc. Everything is innuendo and they are all keyboard CEO's and they all know how a party should be run ( suiting it for themselves not the majority ).
Thanks for the info. Never seen why there has to be a designated sex space as have been going to parties for 18 years and it has never been a problem. Hell they even fuck on the dance floor. Maybe some just need a dark room so they wont be recognised.
See ya all on the dance floor.
Girls just gonna have fun......... - Thu 3 Oct 2002 08:22:48
I can't wait for Sleaze. I will be joining all you dancing boys on the floor. My costume is nearly finished..just some final touches to go and at 11 o'clock last night I was slinking around the back streets of Redfern sourcing some extra nourishishment for the weekend.... the rituals of a party weekend!! Love it.

As for the graffiti wall...Can all you gay games (known as Notts Landing to those in the know) supremos please leave us Sleaze party goers alone. It's great you are going to a better, larger party with "professional" shows and high quality production value (do you have a brochure on it?). Have Fun but leave us Sleazers alone to have and enjoy our party.

But remember Notts Landing is a spin off, a one off and when you really look at it rather hubristic, especially given the current struggle of all our "community" organisations, Mardi Gras, Rights Lobby, BGF and Pride that need due applause for creating and giving us Sleaze this weekend.

Sleaze is a culmination of many things: it is our right, rite, ritural, celebration, conference, release, communion and more. It is our history!!!!! Have a look around the world and show me a place that can offer you that!

The most exciting thing about Sleaze this year is that it is a party of legend. Whether it be the last Sleaze forever or our first step out of the socio-political quagmire we now find ourselves in, this Sleaze is significant. And to all those that have moaned for years "wanting a different party experience" then here it is.

Meaning like you wouldn't believe.

And it seems those of us that are going want to go and that can only mean one thing. A fantastic night!!!

Anyway I have glittering to do! See you saturday night.

Anyway

Well ... I'm leaving work early today and I'm having tommorrow off.

So I bid you all farewell ... it's good to see all the messages back in high spirits ... WOO HOOOOOOOO

I'm wearing leather pants, a black leather look shirt with a NYPD badge on the side and a badge with the word POLICE on the front, a leather hat, leather gloves (my god, why didn't I just wear the whole cow!!!) ... so basically I'll be one of 200 people dressed exactly the same !!! but, I'm not going as a Police Man, I'm going as Police Boy ... hee hee ... God if the place got raided by the real police we'd just think the dance floor got full !!!

Anways .... SEE YOU ALL ON THE DANCE FLOOR ... (and at Queer Nation for those making a complete trashy weekend of it all)

(I'll try to keep reading if people from here are looking to meet up)

Dancing Boy, my compliments on your outfit. When too much leather is barely enough :-)
I'll be hanging out in The Dome mostly, although getting hot and sleazy in the darker corners is also on the agenda. My partying attire of camo shorts and black t shirt will allow me to ambush nubile young nursies and, er, "dance" with them :-)

Two sleeps to go! Yay!
Evil Twin - Thu 3 Oct 2002 13:39:32

This is the first Sleaze ball party I am going to miss since 1988. As much as I'd like to go my financial position can only warrant me going to a big dance party 3 or 4 times a year. The upcoming Gay Games coming so quickly after Sleaze means I had to make a judgement call which party to attend as I couldnt justify both. To me there will only be one gay games which is a must to attend but sleaze balls come and go and they are dime a dozen and Ive had the pleasure of experiencing the last 13 of them so my decision is to attend the gay games closing party in November. Prides DJ selection is also very very bland in my opinion which just gives me another legitimate reason to not attend this one. To be honest I thought I'd be upset not attending Sleaze this year but frankly I'm not upset at all , in fact I'm downright pleased that I wont be attending this one cause its clearly not going to have the hype or the excitement of the Mardi gras Sleazes. Its just NOT right having a sleaze without the RHI so I'm happy to be saving my dollars and using them for the main event in November. Shit, Im even working on Monday earning double time and a half on the public holiday , you have to love that !!! So I'll be thinking of you all as I drift off to sleep on Saturday night and will wake all fresh on Sunday looking forward to the biggest Gay event in Sydneys history next month. As for the closing gay games dance party , i want to tell you all that there is 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO ! 37 DAYS TO GO !

Still no news on shows? I don't mind if there are no "official" sex spaces. Provided the Dome is full enough, it takes care of itself thank you very much - specially right in the middle after say 4am. Yum yum. See all ya hot hot boys under the mirror!
PaulD - Thu 3 Oct 2002 19:31:15
Some opinions of my own

It's a shame we won't have the RHI with the moving lighting rigs
It's a shame we probably won't have a international act
It's a shame the Gay Games are so close = makes people have to decide between the two
It's a shame the tickets sales are slow
It's shameful more people aren't going, it's a party not a club night!
It's a shame there aren't more DJ's
The DJ's are good, but 3 hours of one local DJ is too much, remeber Sleaze is a celebration of variety
Please everyone that goes have a great safe party.
Make new friends, even if only for a hour
Have drink every hour and if it's water please buy the water, not fill up in the loo's. Bottle water tastes so much better, it more refreshing and helps pay the debt off. People will thank you for it.

I can understand some of the young-uns relishing their acceptance by most straights and going to the big straight parties and enjoying them, the production, the internationals, the PLUR.

The community needs to figure out how special events like Sleaze can still survive and cover the communtity as a whole.

gavin bright, steven blomfield, steven carley and paul goodyear was the line up
- Thu 3 Oct 2002 20:52:50
Funny you should say that. I actually know that Paul Goodyear was in fact chosen to DJ Sleaze before things went all wrong at SGLMG. Now this raises the question - Why didnt Pride allow the DJ's that Mardi Gras wanted to play Sleaze to take up their appointments ? Pride ran off and chose their own DJ's and now we have a Sleaze Ball that rumour has it will be lucky to have 5000 tickets sold for it !! To those of you that are going I say have fun and make the most of whats available on the night cause it sounds like its going to be pretty empty in some parts of the Hordern and Dome on the night.
justaboi - Thu 3 Oct 2002 21:42:54
Pinkboard is unable to verify this statement.
Fireman Sam, that is very faint praise indeed. Thanks nothing for your help. My question is this. Is the determined negative viewpoint being repeated ad nauseum here part of an orchestrated campaign to damage Sleaze? Who could benefit from such a stance? I smell a rat here.

As for shows, in the SSO it says that there are 2 big shows, and then some smaller performance pieces - coal miners showering on a moving trolley thing in the Hordern, buzzcut demos in Dome. Through the window in Hordern schoolboy/schoolgirl/priest/nun installation pieces.
Big finale with lighting and sound - hope everyone else is getting excited - see ya there

Better things to do. - Fri 4 Oct 2002 08:50:09
Better things to do....if this is so, then surely you also have better things to do than log onto this Sleaze graffitti wall (of which presumably you have no interest) and add to the rising negativity toward Sleaze (and implicitly Pride).

I agree with Paul Diamondo (see above) there is a rat here. But why? What is it with everyone? Fear? or worse Boredom? Can't anyone actually see the big picture? We are in rapid decline, more rapid than our meteoric rise during the 90s. Make no mistake of that (and that includes the Gay Games - from what they have realeased to the media God knows what is really going on there).

Not only are we in decline but we have fragmented and I can just see our enemies and those that loathe us viewing all this. They have won and what is worse they have won the day by just being patient and doing nothing!! Take Fred Nile: He is a member of parliament and always has been, he has influence and he and all that agree with him have given us enough rope to hang ourselves. He used to pray for rain every parade of which he was largely unsuccessful. Little did we know of the great flood (in drought year) that would come to drown us!

Get your fucking uniforms on we have a war to go to!!!

Dance like there is no tomorrow....I am determined to make this party fucking fantasitc. Negative energy can be morphed into a positive explosion if you confront it. And that is what a dance party is, particularly a community one, a coming together of energy and experience to create and say something! (clubs can be fun but they do not do this) On saturday night draw on every magical essence and power you have and get dancing and more people to go.

See you on the battlefied tomorrow night! I am charged just as much as I am excited.

SLEAZE 2002 In Uniform ? Only 1 Sleep to go!

Yep, Sleaze is this Saturday and ticket sales have gone crazy in the last few days. We estimate we will end up with a crowd of around 6,000.

For this year's party particular emphasis has been placed on the three major elements of all major dance parties: Sound, Lighting and Entertainment. Sound and Lighting will be provided by 32 Hundred lighting and audio guru Kevin Davidson has been engaged as a consultant to ensure the best quality sound. Oracle lighting will provide two high powered water cooled lasers which will be used to spectacular effect in the Hordern Pavilion.

Without giving too much away entertainment will range from coal miners to netball teams, and from naughty catholic school children to buzz cuts in the Dome from our resident barber.

We have completely re-jigged the Sleaze budget to make sure we get the maximum ?bang-for-our-buck? by taking money out of areas that partygoers don?t see and putting that money into sound, lighting and entertainment which are essential to producing a quality event. The support of Playbill, 32 Hundred, Butler?s and AV-PRO has greatly assisted.

PRIDE agreed to produce this year?s Sleaze Ball following the decision to put the former Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Ltd into voluntary administration.
by email from PRIDE - Fri 4 Oct 2002 19:59:59

SLEAZE is gonna go OFF!!!! I agree with the 'Roman General' that the crowd that is attending Sleaze will have more kick in their extra exertion to prove you negative dicks wrong! 4000 - 6000 attendees in 2 halls is still a mass of people and they are not all cramped into some low roofed, smoke filled club that can also play an hour or more of crap music before you hear a song you really wanna dance to. PRIDE has provided 2 halls, 6 Dj's, lighting, shows and a space for more than 3000 people to dance, drink and party with other gay / gay friendly (glbt) people. What more do some of you guys want? It's not possible to please large communities all the time so why when it doesn't please you is it a travesty? The gay games organisers might not live up to some peoples expectation but if they harped up about it, you'd get offended. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake that has to be specifically catered for. I'm going and I haven't been this excited about a party since last Sleaze. I know I'm going to have fun cause that's what I do when I go out. So those that are going to Sleaze see you there and we'll have a blast. Those that are going to QN, I'll tell you what went on at Sleaze when I get there.

Have fun doing what you do!

P.s I'll be wearing dark over-"not much" as anything too hard to take off, is not worth wearing. ; )
SEX BOMB - Sat 5 Oct 2002 02:49:02

There have been a large number of messages appearing on this wall aimed at destroying Sleaze. It has been a carefully orchestrated campaign with the aim of creating bad feeling about the party. I consider these malicious and no more will be permitted on this wall. Read the message of Bucketboy - Tue 24 Sep 2002 20:35:33 for an insight into the motive.

Many of these messages originate from iprimus.net.au, including those from bucketboy. I have no way of determining whether it is one or many people placing these messages.

I'll see everyone else under the mirror ball. Have a great party, and make sure your uniform is clean ready for inspection.

SLUTZ - Sat 5 Oct 2002 14:57:17
Thank you to all the people who have been contributing to the countdowns in my absence. I'm more than happy to share that fun around.

I've just arrived off the plane, from 3 weeks away - and just in time for SLEAZE!!!

I hope to see you all on the dance floor having the time of your life!
ncb - Sat 5 Oct 2002 19:01:05

Hi,i'm from a little town called Kyogle on the north coast, this is my very first SLEAZE ever!!Can't wait to party!party!party!
Greg - Sat 5 Oct 2002 20:38:34
Hope everyone has fun tonight and at Frisky and MEN. I am sitting here in NZ listening to my tape from MG, I hope tonight is as good. Am trying to get back for GG but will have to wait and see.

Did my bit for Sleaze and bought a ticket for a boy who I know will party in my place (and just as fully, have lotsa fun Bat Boy!)

I hope you all have fun.

So then what happenned? Shows? Numbers? Please tell all...

Bloody fabulous party. Especially loved Luke Leal. Lights were amazing most shows were good but the closing pirotechnics were unbelievable.
Thanks Pride!

boys make the best pets - Sun 6 Oct 2002 11:23:43
Great party, Luke Leal was fantastic.....really carried the night. Very crowded on the dance floor, and very happy, upbeat crowd. Lots of uniforms to be seen everywhere. Best show......the boys in the shower! Yum-O!! Was it my imagination, or did one of the guys sport a hard-on? Overall, a terrific night.
jeffgg - Sun 6 Oct 2002 16:25:42
Contrary to the Doom and Gloom sayers, that was a DAMN FINE party. The music was to my liking, although the sound systems could have been a little beefed up (minor complaint). The LASER and light shows in the Horden were mezmerising. Medical was easy to get to and visible, the cloak room well sorted, the party didn't run out of beer, water or change, Paul Dillon welcomed us through the gates, there were sex-spaces condoms and lube everywhere if you needed it, didn't run into one arrogant/stuck-up straight... not much to complain about really! Ok so it did have a hint of "Budget Party" about it, but that worked well with Uniform I think. I like an international guest as much as anyone else, but it is a Dance Party not a caberet. I'd love to see more really creative local talent and shows personally (OK, mixed with the occasional Int Guest:) Thanks to all those that I partied with last night, I still love you he he he.
Viking Marauder - Sun 6 Oct 2002 17:07:04
Can somebody tell me how the sex spaces were set up at Sleaze and were they busy ?
- Sun 6 Oct 2002 17:35:18
Thank you Pride for a wonderful party. My friends and I all enjoyed it greatly though as usual it was over in flash. The crowd was friendly, no attitude at all (even the woman whose coffee cup I tipped over her acidentally). The Dome felt a bit empty and never got that down and dirty feeling I live for but the sex space in the Hordern was jammed all night. Pride have done a really great job.
PaulDiamondo - Sun 6 Oct 2002 20:13:50
Yep, a fine party. To all the trashers out there, you missed out on a great night!
- Sun 6 Oct 2002 21:52:52
Thanks for a great party!! Loved the music, loved the people! Real nice mix of people which was good... and yeah!! As usual it went way too quick! Pride did a good job with a limited budget.
Craig&Steve - Sun 6 Oct 2002 22:34:05
Nice to hear you're thinking of us over here BND. Missing us yet?
- Mon 7 Oct 2002 01:26:40
well that was a cool party, thanks Pride.
sp@cey - Mon 7 Oct 2002 07:52:53
Brilliant party!
well done with Pride - Mon 7 Oct 2002 10:50:13
There was nothing special about Sleaze Ball. It was a fair party and thats about it. I thought Luke Leal was solid and Kate Munroe was very ordinary at the end but ive come to expect that from her over the years. The crowd numbers were way down and I'd be surprised if the party actually turned a profit. The party was a big downer compared to the brilliant sleaze ball of 2001. Lets hope New Mardi Gras can get the sleaze back in sleaze next year cause this year it went for a walk about.
optusboy - Mon 7 Oct 2002 11:07:33
According to the Daily Telegraph they did make a profit. stop being so bloody negative all the time!!
- Mon 7 Oct 2002 15:59:00
Fantastic Sleaze! Thanks Pride!
- Mon 7 Oct 2002 16:03:43
Why is it such a crime to express an opinion that is not all praising of an event ? I mean hello people do have different views. Just accept it, let people openly make their point of view known and move on guys and girls. I really enjoyed Sleaze Ball but I too thought it was a mediocre party compared to previous Sleazes. Thats just my opinion, dont try to castrate me just because I express that opinion. Roll on Gay Gaymes.
David from Strathfield - Mon 7 Oct 2002 18:33:33
Had a Fantatic party! Too many bois, so little time. Don't know when I'll be able to walk again my legs are so sore (whether that's from all the dancing or the mischief in the back room I can't be certain). The naked shower bois were a hoot and yes I do believe one was semi-naked (or is that naked with a semi???). The fireworks at the end were fantastic. Also great to hear a different type of song like "Hella good" at the end. Went straight on to Arq recovery which we stayed at for a whole hour. After a great party like Sleaze a club just doesn't compare, especially going from a non-attitude event to a club full of it. Had a great Queer Nation also. Got up to a little bit of mischief on the dance floor there but nobody saw that, did they? We were trying to be very discreet. Can't wait for the next party during gay games. haven't decided which one I'll be going to yet but I know I'll go off. Keep on partying guys.
SEX BOMB - Mon 7 Oct 2002 19:23:35
Thanks for a great party PRIDE. I can't believe that you managed to organise such an amazing party in just five weeks. Looking forward to the next Sleaze already and can't wait for New Year's Eve.
Daemon - Mon 7 Oct 2002 20:05:10
Well everyone I was with seemed to be having an excellent Sleaze! Unfortunately I couldn't shake a nasty headache and that took the edge off my party pleasures. The first show "Women in Uniform" was a blast, and I loved the dancers especially that tall firefighter. Yay for latex body paint! It was also nice to see most people making an effort to dress accordingly. A friendly happy crowd, pretty lights, and music to dance to, so Sleaze gets a thumbs up from me. After a good sleep I was more than ready to do it all again (sans headache!) at Queer Nation the next night.
Evil Twin - Tue 8 Oct 2002 00:15:45
Thank you Pride - in one way glad the knockers on this wall did not go as the attitude/feel was great, but on the other hand would have been great if more
could have supported but at least they turned a small profit. Not knocking Kate but thought her style should not have followed Luke Leals who's set was fantastic but that was the only whinge. Roll on New Year.
Thank you Pride....................P - Tue 8 Oct 2002 08:46:32
Yes in my opinion Kate Monroe really slowed down everyones mood, Luke Leal was fantastic!
- Tue 8 Oct 2002 09:49:29
I had a great night, though i enjoyed the last few hours despite Kate Munroe. I thought she was just awful; truly abysmal and all my friends thought so too. Much of the tempo was way too slow and it was almost as if the music had stopped at some points. I hated how she kept playing the same snippet of a song mixed into another and then it never actually led to that song at all. even when i hated the snippet she was playing (i think there was an old michael jackson song) i was wishing she would just play it to get the monstrosity over and done with. i like Hella Good by No Doubt, though i thought the version she played to end her set was totally inappropriate and too hard to dance to. maybe she played ita s she knew Verushka would be doing a number to it at Queer Nation the next night???
- Tue 8 Oct 2002 10:04:44
I'd like to take this opportunity to congratulate Pride and everyone who participated in creating this year's Sleaze - obviously a triumph under the difficult circumstances.
It's a while since I have looked at Pinkboard, and what a tragic view it gives of our community! I can't say I am surprised at the campaign orchestrated against Sleaze but let's take this opportunity to be a little diginfied and focus on what is good about our community and leave aside all the embarrassing vileness. Because next month is something very important in the global context - not just for our community here, but worldwide, and for the image of Sydney as a queer homeland.
The Gay Games is an umissable opportunity, and if does not receive support from the community we will all be regretting it for a long time.
There's really no point getting stuck into the organisers, who are probably by now working around the clock, and so many of whom (Stuart Borrie, Jane Becker, Paul Croft, Lisa Grubb, to name just a few) are as hard-working and creative staff and volunteers as you are ever likely to see.
We have seen over the past few months how needlessly destructive our community can be - I can't stand seeing it now directed at ACON, or Pride, or Gay Games. We will end up with nobody at all left standing and there's no point in that.
I'm pleased to see Panther draw a line in the sand (I could have sued you a million times already, mate!) and idealist that I am, I hope to see a change in our community culture which is based on a little dignity and less self-hatred, and ensures the future of Mardi Gras, and Pride, and a fabulous November 2002.
Congratulations again to Pride and good luck to everyone over at Gay Games.
Kelly Gardiner (formerly of SGLMG) - Tue 8 Oct 2002 10:21:18
I was actually quite surprised at the diversity of "uniforms" that people came in. I was just expecting wall to wall military outfits, but people really went out of the way to come in other uniforms. nurses, boy scouts, french maids, almost everything was there!
- Tue 8 Oct 2002 10:47:54
It should have been blatently obvious to all and sundry who know ANYTHING about particular DJ's styles that Kate Munroe wouldnt be suitable to close Sleaze ball because of her style in music. This issue was well documented prior to the party on this particular graffiti wall. So it should come as no surprise to anybody when they make a comment about Kates music being a let down after Luke Leal. Kate is a very talented DJ but she has NEVER been suitable for the main hall at a party where the emphasis is on energetic music. Stick her in the Dome and she would have been perfect. Maybe some of us picked up on those warnings before it happened. I for one left Sleaze at 5am on the dot as soon as Luke finished cause I didnt want my excellent mood to be dragged down by dull music as a result of a questionable DJ selection by Pride . I also heard that there was a fairly considerable loss of crowd from 5am - 6am who left the party. The fact I went home at 5 proved to be a windfall for me as I met a very hunky man in the carpark and I offered the poor soul a lift home. Funny how I didnt get back to my place till 6pm Sunday night :)
MattyG - Tue 8 Oct 2002 11:02:44
This is the opinion of the poster.
I HAD A FANTASTIC TIME AT SLEAZE!! Thank you to everyone who helped make it such a brilliant night! Thank you to all you party poopers who stayed at home- we didn’t miss ya at all!!

The music, uniforms, lights, shows, dancers, sex spaces, rubber gloves, free buses, helpful staff, coat check, bars, toilets, smiling faces & sexy people made it such a fabulous night for me! I don’t think I met a single person there who was having a bad time! Yay for Sleaze!

Contrary to some of the opinions above, myself & all my friends thought Kate Monroe played the BEST set- so I guess it just goes to show that we all have different tastes! Kate’s closing set really made up for the few hours of Luke Leal’s cheesy anthems at the beginning- which were still ‘not bad’!

See you all again soon!
sxc - Tue 8 Oct 2002 13:57:43

Kate's closing track in the Hordern (No Doubt) was one of my musical highlights of the night so thanks Kate - the moment I heard it, I knew it was the end so I went hard and went off.
And Miaow! those grrrls in the opening number - hot! hot! hot!
Well done Pride. Great effort.
Wet - Tue 8 Oct 2002 16:04:01
That was a great party - thank you Pride for sticking your collective necks out and getting on with it. The singalong tunes while waiting on the opening show and Sexy's great performance of Women in Uniform was outstanding (rrowl), as was the drag show at 5am (to those that say 'not another old drag show' it's such a treat to see the girls on a full-sized stage and see what they can do!) The night's vibe was friendly and attitude free and just cozy enough on the dancefloor : ) fun fun all night.
pity about Kate Munroe pinching Feisty's closing set from InquisitionX, Kate you sounded much better at QueerNation in the girlbar on Sunday ... how about promoters remember that just because a DJ is popular they are not All Suited to a big set at a dance party and often better stick to small spaces.
Overall a great night and a fabulous loooong weekend!!

A huge thank you to those who attended Sleaze 2002 - In Uniform last Saturday night making it such a great success. We're delighted with the fabulous response that we received from the community.

In the last email we sent we estimated a crowd of 6,000 but we were wrong, in the end it was closer to 7,500. This means that we have reduced the old
Mardi Gras debt by over $80,000 and generated a reasonable profit for PRIDE.

This will help us partly offset our losses of the last two years.

Thanks and we hope that you will join us again for PRIDE New Year's Eve 2002.

Pride did a great job with Sleaze however I am very disappointed that in the thankyou list printed in the community papers, there was absolutely no mention of Mardi Gras Party Committee and the contribution that they made, particularly to entertainment. Some of the ideas used were not the ideas of Pride & they should recognise this.
- Sun 13 Oct 2002 09:59:42
Pride forgeting to thank the organisation that let them profit from Sleaze, that doesnt surprise me in the slightest.

Well Done Pride. In five short (and quite difficult) weeks you created a very special party.

Sure there wasn't any spectacular scenic .. but that was sobering and actually inspiring. I loved the simplicity of the lanterns in the chill out area and the re-use of things from past parties..it added to the sense that this party was a call to arms and reckoning if anything else.

The lighting was really smart and pretty and that final laser and fireworks show was awesome and brought the house down..which was still very full at the time.

The shows were (as shows always are) an explosive burst of colour and story within the dream state that is a Dance Party..though the Shower boys were much appreciated and Wymess Mongrel Bitch's show was wild (fantastic costumes ..three 1950s Hollywood rich bitches transfromed into strutting vamps - and to add to the mind twist it was ethereal...like sirens they came and left without fanfare. Again very dreamy.

The party was small but really together..The Hordern was packed to the edges most of the night, dancing on chairs. Fantastic. Whilst I'm not a sex at party person..I do love that it is going on ...and there is was just to the right of our dance spot in the Hordern.

The crowd was friendly, open and incrediably intelligent. Conversations about our time and what was ahead were constant..but I must say not maudlin.
Everyone there wanted to be there..which was really refreshing from the usual snarling scene contingent.

At times it felt like we had gone back in time.

As for the music ..Yes Luke Leal was amazing..We couldnt' stop moving, but I equally think Kate Monroe was just as great...Her set was clever. I really liked the way it was hard and soft simultaneously..my brain and body really went off and so did all those dancing around me (friends and strangers)..I think it is important for the final DJ to bring the party experience to a conclusion and Kate did that with a deep intelligence.

See you at New Year's Eve.

terrace bar/ girls bar ... I had such a good time I didn't know where I was most of the night <g>
it still stands that some Djs are better suited to smaller spaces
.... what's the next party?

Thank-you PRIDE!
I really enjoyed Garry Tee's set, as well. A big thanks to all fellow partygoers for their enthusiasm. See y'all at NYE or perhaps earlier in clubland. I need a huge rest NOW, that's for sure.

Oh, almost forgot; I just love SLEAZE 2002 CD, especially Pete MacNamarra's. Deeply-sleazy and almost essential. Paul G.'s CD is well worth a listen, too.
In praise of the CD, especially Pete's - Mon 14 Oct 2002 22:25:07
sleaze had to be the worst party ever...
i thought luke was gonna play energentic and familiar...
sounded like hardcore and what is that...
kate was posy so kate was kate

the fan was groovier (and louder) than the am radio sound system in the dome...
never again..pride ? i dont have any left

suck my clock - Tue 15 Oct 2002 15:40:32 - Perhaps panther should just start a wall for people who only have negative things to say. ie. for all the knockers out there.
How about some positivity - Wed 16 Oct 2002 10:47:41
I thought Pride did a great job organising Sleaze 2002 in such a short time and with a limited budget. The party filled up early and the Horden was packed all night, (didn't make it into the Dome unfortunately). I have read a lot of comments for and against Luke and Kate and the sets they played, but nobody has mentioned a thing about the opening dj in the Horden - Anthony Whitlock. Anthony who? The guy who played a great, upbeat and happy vocal set that got everybody into full swing. He finished his set on a high, ready for Luke to blast off in his set. Thanks Anthony, you really got the night going
