Beautiful Experiences And Sensual Treats

This is the theme of the 2001 Sleaze Ball from the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. It promises to awaken our hidden desires and fulfill our wildest fantasies.

Bears bring out your fur. Bitches sparpen your claws. Shine your leather. Hone your horns. Fluff your feathers. Slide into your second skin. File your fangs.

See you all at Foxy Studios on 29th September under the full moon.

Mardi Gras' Beast Home

Weeeeeee a party wall. Cant wait for party and happy hardhouse is in the Hordern. City Live was just tooooooo small. Will there be any surprise guests ? or is that only for MG ?

Golly - this is just like old times, but maybe everyone has forgotten this wall. So why did Ben Drayton pull out of Sleaze? He was most of the reason I bought my ticket. NB - think the background colour is more baby poo brown
Glad to be back - Tue 4 Sep 2001 14:33:26
How about a Shirl tribute for the 3am show??
Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance... - Tue 4 Sep 2001 15:23:15
have they picked the dancers for sleaze yet?
- Tue 4 Sep 2001 15:29:22
Now remember Today FM on Thursday at 5pm. They are announcing the biggest concert of the year. Hint: They are playing "Impressive Instant" as the back up music. Also remember this ceratin someone will be filming a new movie during Sleaze so I highly doubt they'll be performing ....

From my past Sleaze experiences I wonder if Ben Drayton's music is suited to Sleaze, which is such a sanitised event really. I preferred his regular Saturday night gig at Phoenix at about 3am. Or perhaps at the Palladium at one of the alternative parties.
Devil's Felch - Wed 5 Sep 2001 00:49:24
My show tip is Sara-Marie and Johnnie wearing rabbit ears doing the bum dance. Or should that be the tip for the most popular costume of the night?

MArk Barakat wanted Mardi Gras to give us a f**king amazing party with space to play. Let's see if the new board can deliver.

Ben pulled out cause he was getting screwed around. he was initially offered 4 hours, then it got cut back to two. they werent returning his calls and he wasnt even told what time & space he'd be in, so he told them to shove it. good on him !

This is the opinion of the poster.
Love the Nikki rumour. Love it more that people believed it. Heard mardi gras on Rythmn FM (good morning darlinghurst) talking about the party and they seemed both amused and distressed that people would believe such a thing.

Has anyone heard the rumour of Chrissie Amphlett doing "I touch myself"? None of these rumours inspire. If it's Scandal'Us I'll be running....I'm embarrassed to say I did see them at Arq that night and I don't want to subject myself to that again! I got my tix last week and they had reached the grand number of 3400...I'm hoping for a late rush...does anyone know how many they are going to sell?

What station is Rythmn FM on the dial ? Any other great FM stations with dance music ( and not Nova the jocks talk thru most of the songs ). Missing Out FM even Wild...... As for shows , yes it would be great to see the bears do a show. Remember the Dykes on Bikes show where there were bikes and cars and girls girls girls. It was fantastic and away from the boring drag and dancers ( dont get me wrong some drags put on a great show but just miming to a song with a few dance steps thrown in has become boring ). Looking forward to hardhouse in Hordern.

Did Frisky sell out - given that it finishes at 3am with a 6pm start?
- Thu 6 Sep 2001 19:01:16
Show Rumour: First Show - drag queens miming to some old song that happens to be in the charts at the moment. Second Show - little known, obscure female artist trying to make it big by associating with the gay and lesbian community singing a song that about 6 people have ever heard. Third Show - person sitting on stage doing nothing, but the crowd will go wild anyway 'cause they will all be off their faces. Final Show - aging gay icon (read: artist who hasn't done anything for about 20 years, or artist who has been around for 20 years but never really achieved anything) trying to revitalise flagging career by doing a recent remix of an old old song ....
Said it here first! - Thu 6 Sep 2001 22:17:24

Frisky tickets still on sale, but not many left. I purchased 3 from One Stop DJ today, and they had about 2 dozen left. The guy there told me they expect to be sold out by the end of this coming weekend. Yeah, it will be interesting to see the impact of the unusual hours. But, can't miss Greg Bolodian's first run at Frisky. Hopefully he'll be stunning, and true to the Frisky formula, and possibly come back again for future parties. I must admit I've been a bit disappointed with Luke Leal at the last 2 Friskys. Still, I reckon the Frisky/ARQ combo will be a perfect recovery for what I hope will be a great Sleaze Ball party!

Hi guys. I expect to (once again) be screamed out of the room for this question, but here goes... any news on a backroom setup for Sleaze. I come from a long way off down to Sydney each year for Sleaze, and for me, part of the 'fun of the fair' is the opportunity, if I decide to take it up, for some anonymous play. Any rumours / facts about locations within the grounds? Thanks for your help. And P.S. I have heard all the chastising about how those who want that sort of thing can go to beats and saunas, etc. And still, I ask.

mardi Gras announces the first offical recovery GAG @ GAS! We are pleased to announce our first official recovery with GAG at GAS! It's the morning after don't miss gig on Sunday 30th September from 8am - 2pm. Your DJ's are the gorgeous Kate Monroe, the magnificent Alex Taylor, spunky-funkster Thomas the Funk Engine and tribal-master CoCo. What a line-up! This is why it's the gig to go to. Number 1: It's going to be legendary. Number 2: HI Fi Mike is doing a PA and performing a hot new exclusive of this summer's essential track. Number 3: You can just catch the free bus from the outside of Sleaze and top up on free fruit at the door! Number 4: Most importantly, $5 of every ticket goes to the Mardi Gras Community Development Fund - helping to make our community stronger and safer. More later...

I think it was at Sleaze three years ago that some guys created "dicks out at One". They met in the middle of the dance floor of the Hall of Industries, and at 1 a.m., they all got their bots out. SOunds like a great idea. Anything like that planned for this year's Sleaze?
Mortee in NQ - Sat 8 Sep 2001 22:49:56
Fri 7 Sep 2001 18:18:43 - no official back room at sleaze = no back room at sleaze. Just because people decide to get it on someplace doesn't make that a back room.
- Sun 9 Sep 2001 01:30:03
Mortee in NQ - Sat 8 Sep 2001 20:49:56 - "The dicks out at One" was at Sleaze 1997. I should remember, I had the best view from the DJ Box while playing at 1am in the RHI. It was most amusing as the guys on lights pointed all the robo scans straight at the middle of the dance floor. In the aftermath people thought the whole concept was a fizzer cause it didnt appear to work, but let me tell you from 20 feet up from the scaffolding of the DJ's box it was a very amusing affair. I think i actually stuffed up the 1st mix after 1am because I was so amused by the whole incident.

Thanks for the info Stephen Blomfield. Thought it was a great concept myself - aimed at 'reclaiming Sleaze and Mardi Gras' I think - all that talk that appears in the papers about how the community is not political, etc. Maybe some of the critics could get something like this organised agin - although the DJ boxes could end up VERY crowded. Looking forward to Sleaze,

The concept of DO@1 actually originated here on the Sleaze Graffiti Wall.
Panther - Mon 10 Sep 2001 11:46:06
Lindy Chamberlain dear, Please respect that this wall is re-born :) It's a new beginning for us all to start afresh. Your unconstructive comment is again a case of 'bile instead of saliva'. There are many ways you can still have a good time without being in the 'spotlight'(and if the sugguestion applies .. hint, hint, nudge, nudge). Otherwise, don't slag an option offered to you just if it's not your cuppa tea or simply just because you're unsure if you can create your own 'good time' vibe wherever you choose to go. Given the nature of things, maybe you'll definitely hear what you like at recovery venues in the outback (no disrespect intended). If you've got a soul, dancing in the wind can be euphoric. Big cities can make people bitter and lose their soul. And sometimes, the outback's a good place to find it again so I'm told. Well I can't knock it if I haven't been ;) Happy Sleaze.

the whole of Sleaze is a backroom, that's the point isn't it?? Mardi Gras is a pride celebration, Sleaze is a celebration of our very expressive sexuality. The sooner the sex gets back on the dancefloor where it belongs instead of being hidden out of sight, the sooner the straights who shouldn't be there will realise it's not for them. As for performers, I'm going for Diana Ross arriving on stage on the back of a tiger, singing "Chain Reaction"
Michael - Tue 11 Sep 2001 17:14:41
To me its a dance party not a sex venue but before you howl me down , what is your problem ? I am totally disinterested in sex when on the goodies but never fail to bump into or see people going at it. Sure there is no "dedicated" space but take a walk around and its there. Dome is a surefire sexspot, Hordern has its little nook and crannies and occassionally in the RHI but thats a bit too bright............so its happening, why does it have to have a sign saying "get your sex only in this area " ??? and just because its labelled is not going to make people go to that one area. Everyone knows if you dont want to do it in the toilets then head to the curtain area of Dome. Isn't that enough cruise areas ?

I'm still tossing around in my mind if I like the 2.5 hour sets for DJ's, but I'll be able to judge that post Beast. Re: The new license at Metro for Frisky.... is this going to be across the board? ie, will every Frisky from now on have to end at 3am or is it particular to this event or the day of the week (Sunday night/Monday morning)?? Anyone with info. on this please reply... I'd hate to think that the stand-alone Frisky events will have to end at 3am as well (that would be time to find another venue). For recoveries on Sunday it isn't so bad, although it'll be a bit weird at first to adjust to the times!

The e-mail from Nightgroove said that the 3am finish would hopefully be a one off, and that the Metro management is making an application to the Sydney City Council to renew its 24 hour license. Be interesting to see how it goes with the new hours. I reckon it will still be a great night, because I'm sure the Nightgroove team will be trying harder than ever to put on a great party. JoJo is always brilliant, and hopefully Greg Bolodian will rise to the occassion as well. I'm sure he will! Then at 3am, I'll be off to ARQ!

That's it!! Time to reclaim our party as an expression of our sexuality. At 4am in the RHI just 5 meters in front of the DJ booth, all leathermen, bears and other horny men will be engaging in wanton sex. All other twinks and voyeurs can do it nearer the center of the dance floor.
hornybear - Mon 17 Sep 2001 12:36:29
As an addition to the suggestions above, how about if those of us obscessed with genitalia flashing as a token display of unity, gather in front of the dj structure in every hall at an agreed time? Of course, as a 'community' wanting to 'reclaim our party', we should ALL 'come together' to show our 'solidarity' to display what a close-knit and 'united' minority we are by INCLUDING ALL who identify with this 'community' and are attracted to the same sex to participate - be they gay, lesbian, bi, transexual, pansexual, twinks, bears, pretty, ugly, male & female. It's not my intention to incite politics or issues here, but how about if those of us who read this actually take a little time to look at the bigger picture for a change? Then, spread the word as if it was a piece of malicious gossip. Or then again, that might not be as effective as it's intention would be for a good cause huh? ;) Sleaze as a party that 'celebrates same-sex sexuality', offers an opportunity for those into this 'flashing' display to take it one step further by uniting at the agreed time. Also, wouldn't it be more dramatic to flash outwards of the circle instead of inward? Just a humble suggestion and opinion. Feel free to diasgree. Oh before I forget, when agreeing at a specific flashing time, please ensure there's not going to be a re-run of Big Brother's 'save an evictee' telecast. I remember everyone deserting the AVP fund raiser to go watch tv.

P dear, speed-dick, no dicks, dicks in wheel chairs, muffs and all who identify with this 'community' should all be welcomed to participate in the act of 'solidarity' I'm sure. Or might it be too much to 'tolerate' dancing alongside a gay brother or sister flashing their genitalia at Sleaze as an act of 'reclaimation' for the duration of a 5 minute dance track be unthinkable? If all the fore-mentioned fails, then maybe flash the biggest dildo we can find ;) I'm going shopping tomorrow :)

tina arena is releasing a new single on october 1 - a disco funky number as reported in one of the sunday papers last weekend. suspiciously coincidental.my bet's on tina for the 3am show or the closing show in the rhi. also there are no tina rumours - mg are very good at throwing out alot of red herrings to protect the real performers' identities. my money's on tina.

A Drag Queen always closes Sleaze Ball aparently doing the 8am show. Chrissie is Confirmed and they confirmed yesterday afternoon that Joanne is doing the 5am show, although its not confirmed big brother should be happy as i heard that Sara Marie with those girls (siren is it?) are performing the new single "I'm So Excited"

Well there are only 3 shows this year. The first one is the Bears show, not naked but wearing leather aprons and boots nothing else. The other two will be confirmed next tuesday. But there ais more to the party than the 10 minute shows. What about the fact that the poice will have sniffer dogs at the entrance??????????????

I dont understand what the big deal is ? the large amount of bears & leather folk that refuse to wear deoderant or cologne will surely produce enough "body odours" to distract those pesky dogs from sniffing my goodies !

sniffer dogs? that's just the thing that I need. If I wanted my crotch sniffed and body searched by a man in uniform I'd go to headquarters.
kxr - Thu 20 Sep 2001 03:41:32
Officially, Pinkboard cannot promote the use of illegal substances. However Pinkboard realises that a number of people safely partake in the use of recreational drugs at events such as Sleaze. The presence of sniffer dogs may encourage people to take their drugs in a dangerous manner, and this must be of concern to our community.

Pinkboard cannot be seen to be promoting use of drugs, but it can be seen to be promoting safety. Please be careful with your postings on this topic.

Where does the sniffer dog rumour come from? Is this speculation or does someone know for sure that this is happening?

>>>>>>> why is sleaze so sleazy. why do people have sex with strangers or cheat on their boyfriends while they are dancing, they go looking and fuck in the "backroom?" i do not understand why pay so much to get absolutely trashed and do things that would hurt each other. wanna party, party. but why must it be so sleazy and dirty ... even. i am gay, but i do not see a need to be so extreme and flap my wings and prove to everyone this and that. MG is about pride .... GREAT !!! SLEAZE is a celebration of our sexual openness? it's filthy!! >>>>>>>>>>
why oh why - Thu 20 Sep 2001 15:07:28
From "informed" research into this topic my *suggestion* would be (if you think there is a chance of a problem re sniffer dogs or police) to put substances in a ziplock plastic bag then cover that bag really well in a strong smelling alcohol based aftershave or scent then put this in a second ziplock bag (and a second spray before sealing the second bag doesn't hurt). Dogs have very good smell but it is doubtful that they could differentiate drugs in the presents of such a strong scent through two plastic bags. When entering a party the best place to store would be to have it down the front of your shorts as police can ask you to turn out your pockets but they have to have very good reason and a private area to have you take your pants off (and no the back room does not count :). During the party it is best to store in your sock as its hardest to loose and easy to dump if need be(as opposed to your wallet), it will also not be as humid which can cause powders to clump and mean that you unintentionally take a bigger dose than intended. If you think you are about to be searched try and dump discreetly, loosing a hundred dollars worth of drugs is better than getting busted and fined and ending up with a record, that can cost you thousands of dollars and possibly your job. If you are a nurse, doctor, teacher, police officer or in a similar profession think about the concequences of getting caught and what it would mean. Before you leave home plan what you intend to take and when, seperate it into specific doses in gel caps, this can prevent you from getting greedy and taking more than you intend and reduce the amount you loose if you do have to dump. It will also minimise getting seen trying to bite E's in half or balancing powder on a key. Don't carry drugs for both the party and recovery, depending on how big a pig you are may mean that you are considered a supplier. This also applys to carrying drugs for friends. If you see any cute puppys dogs when your off your face remember to stay away from them, a lot of people get caught by comming up and patting said cute puppy. When taking do so in a cubical as that is the hardest place to legally be observed. If approached by police be polite but don't give any more information than you have to (legally only your name and address) (if you can even remember that lol) ask also if you are under arrest and if so why. If you have a friend who needs medical attention make sure you *are* honest and open with the medical team about exactly what and when they have taken. It is probably best that they don't get found with anything on them as the hospital will hand this over to police, likewise if you go to hospital with them don't get caught yourself. This *advice* is given in attempt to encourage people to think about what they are doing and to use safely while minimising their exposure to the law. Drugs *are* illegal and as has been said you should be very careful. Prevention is better than a cure.

(I know everyone won't agree, but it is my opinion!). Hopefully Greg will keep it trancy as he has in the past (which I love)and I wish him well for the night and hope partygoers aren't disappointed by Wayne's withdrawal. If this rumour is true then, "You go Greg". P.S Thanks for the above "strategy" BND

:) 'why oh why', I've re-read your posting and share your sentiments precisely, BUT please don't label those who choose to indulge as you must be fair. This is where acceptance and tolerance comes in to situations where different individuals and points of view/agreements etc come into play. Mate, I know where your heart is concerning this subject, and trust me when I say mine feels the same. Just go and create your own fun. Let others do likewise and to each his own as long as there is mutual respect for the other :)) Remember, this 'community' allows itself to display a lot more and is able to get away with most of it. *Vigilante rips the knotted knickers off* Lindy Baby, guess what?? My enquries as to the official recovery @ GAS has confirmed Alex and Kate are playing in Bohem and Thomas The Funk Engine and Coco are playing the main room. So it isn't going to be just tribal as I thought as well. As for ARQ, the ad says Paulo, Paul Goodyear, Greg Boladian, Roger Z and Peter Farris. I think that's only for the night session. spoke to a lovely boy at mardi gras on friday & he said that only 8000 tix had been sold so far. the sleaze ad says to buy early as it will sell out fast (or somethin' like that) can this be classed as false advertising ? byo cat to swing on the dancefloor. there should be plenty of room ! also ... I'm curious as to why sveta seems to be a permanant MG DJ. it cant be due to her mixing a MG CD a while ago and the girl who did last years one isnt playing at this party. can anyone shed some light on this (btw - this isnt an attack, juts a question that has been on my mind for a while)
Shave - Sun 23 Sep 2001 18:06:07
Sorry man hunter... I didn't mean it like that.. I never mentioned older guys going after younger guys anyway! I've just had some nights where I've gone out and certain older men have not gotten the hint and won't stop trying to touch or whatever and it honestly ruins my time and I have to keep moving! I know not all older guys are like that or are even interested in younger guys. My message is mainly to everybody of any age.... Take a hint when somebody wants you to leave them alone!!!! I hope everyone has a wonderful night and that we can all respect eachother and eachothers space (if required!!). I've got no problems with older guys by the way man hunter... I told dano to come along and hope he does, especially if its his first time.

Can't wait for the Sleaze myself. That's the only other thing in my mind that keeps me up and looking forward to the weekend. If only I could capture the moments at 3AM forever, for every dance party on a scale like this. I like parties like this because it's often very fun, strangers talking to strangers, people dancing and most of them seem to enjoy it and are nice, friendly to one another. I meet heaps of people and sometimes make friends out of that. I don't care if people are having sex there. As long as the music makes me want to dance and if I am happy to take part in that. Just be myself, be a bit out there. I know the drugs had to be part(if not major)of the explanation, it's probably not 'real' in our normal, daily life, but in that moments, it's real even if you're on something. Grab some condoms off me if you want as I'm handing them out for free until 11.30PM. Wish you all a fantastic Sleaze. Party on.

I agree with party boy 73, the 3am moment is intangible and that is what makes it so great. Reading this board over the last few weeks, I'd just like to echo some of the sentiments above. Yes, everyone is more friendly and it isn't all due to the drugs either. Maybe in the light of recent events overseas we should be grateful for both where and how we live here in Sydney, and maybe take that extra step of friendship with people we meet at parties (and anywhere else) chemical enhancement doesn't come into the equation. Keep that in mind. If you love the parties and the people - show it! As for all the concern about the dogs, has anyone tried to confirm this? Sources I know say its not going to happen. Maybe we should try to findout rather than scaring ourselves. ...and the shows? The Bears, Sara-Marie, Paul Mac. Anyone?
- Mon 24 Sep 2001 22:38:39
SHAVE, just got a couple of tickets for my overseas friends and they were tickets number 9 867 onwards so the numbers don't so bad after all. Have also been told that a lot of American boys have shelved their plans to attend Sleaze because of what's happened in NYC which could have contributed to lower ticket sales this year.
Otto - Tue 25 Sep 2001 00:38:15
Now that we hear that lots of lovely American boys won't be joining us for Sleaze does that mean that lots of lovely Sydney boys are now prepared to take their place ( and some more of SYdney's fabulous lesbians???) I hope so. For those of us who travel from far away, it is like a fantasy world to be amongst so many people who take pride in their appearance and who love being people of their own 'kind'. Despite all the infighting and bitchiness that tends to rear its ugly head, let's face it, Sleaze is one hell of a party - could straights do anything this well?
Mortee from NQ - Tue 25 Sep 2001 02:53:23
No Mortee the straights dont put on a Party like we do, hence why they always try to go. Please dont paint us as always bitching and infighting. This is the only place I see it and if you add up the number of names who are doing it,its only a handful and considering the size of the community here, they are not worth taking notice of. Pity numbers might be down due to overseas visitors not coming ( I work in the industry and there is general cancelling of holidays for the next few months ). Been going for about 15-17 years and it is just a fantastic fantasyland. Have a great one all.

DJ CHANGE We regret to announce due to a late cancellation Wayne G will no longer be RHI DJ between 3am and 5.30am. We are however pleased to announce he will be replaced by Greg Boladian, keeping up the great RHI tradition of supporting local talent and supplying plenty of hands-in-the-air party pleasure. ---------- Finally they annouce it, in the latest Members Newsletter Email. It was tucked away towards the very end. If you hadn't been looking for it you could have possibly missed it. Not only was any explanation to Wayne G's cancellation inexistent but Greg Boladian's introduction was with little fanfare, "...keeping up the great RHI tradition of supporting local talent and supplying plenty of hands-in-the-air party pleasure." Sooo excited bout Sleaze. Was abit freaked out about all the S.D. talk. And without sex at the party where is the Sleaze? I don't partake personally but it definately adds to the atmosphere. Here's hopin for SexDrugs&RocknTechno in 2001 (indulge in which ever YOU want). As for music: Any raver classics welcome. Golden Girls "Kinetic" blew me away in 99. the remix of The Clashes "Rock tha Casbah" in 2000. I'm sure that they're won't be sniffer dogs at the party - the cops know what goes on at these parties and prefer to more or less turn a blind eye. The use of sniffer dogs would seriously damage community relations with the police and might even cause a riot at the entrance should they try to arrest people. As for the party, I am so looking forward to it. There is hardly anywhere to go partying these days. I can't wait for a big bender this weekend, with a great hard house/techno line-up in the Hordern. Baby bear and Sveta will f***king rock the last four hours, Sveta having said as much in the MG newsletter. Well good to see a few names on here that I recognise from last year. Once again i'm looking forward to a great dance party. Rarely go out apart from the larger dance parties, so love them when I go. Some were commenting on the friendliness etc. I totally agree. Have only been to one party a couple of years ago where you felt a very different vibe from the moment you walked through the gates. That wasn't a nice one, but all others.. fabbo! I must admit to being one of those people who love a good chat with folks that I meet in the stands, or sitting outside. Its one of the enjoyable facets of these parties. Anyway, take care all. If you want to come say hi, i'm wearing leather pants and boots, will have a large henna tatt on my stomach/chest, and a pair of red devil horns. Hmm.. that is probably the description for about 8000 other guys there. Oh well :)

Here's the word from Frisky on the Dendy recovery: As a special treat we will be opening the Dendy Bar and Cinema at Martin Place this Monday morning from 3am to 9am. Your DJ's Neal Crawford, Ruby and JoJo will be taking you through the roof until your little feet can dance no more. While you're catching your breath, you might like to watch the attraction we have showing in the cinema - "South Park - Bigger, Longer and Uncut". Sit back, relax, chill out - get silly. This will be a very playful space indeed. Those of you who remember the cinema when it was part of the Metro Thatre, will jump for joy with glimmer and shine. Tickets will be available on the door - $10.00 (inc. gst) for Frisky ticket holders and $20.00 (inc. gst) for everyone else. Priority entry will be given to Frisky ticket holders.

Well the most popular hall with the gayest cutest crowd was undoubtedly city live with Jake Kilby playing the most amazing set of commercial handbag music which goes to prove that MG need to fine tune DJ selection in the future in my opinion. If any lesson is learnt from this party its that the tide is changing back the popular dance music. Its now not acceptable for a DJ to play a set of only current tunes. Every "classic" track Kilby played was greeted with a roof raising roar of approval. What a set !! "Break the chain" - Motiv8 , "Nothing in the world"- Mozaic , "Fingers and Thumbs" - Erasure , "Free,Gay & Happy" - Coming Out Crew , "What Do I Have to Do" - Kylie Minogue , "Make It on My Own" - Alison Limerick. Now its time for MG to realise that there is a place for a hall that plays commercial cheese (gee i hate that term) with a deliberate emphasis on playing a "classic" every couple of songs. This was supported by the fact that city live had a queue to get in from 1am right up to about 5am. Theres a loud message there from the paying customers ! Congratulations Jake Kilby on a brilliant performance, I was so proud of you.

A fantastic party. The best Sleaze in years. (The sleaziest sleaze in years.)Loved the bears, loved chrissy, loved paul mac. The hordern rocked and was pumping all night, especially Baby Bear's set. Well done Mardi Gras!
- Mon 1 Oct 2001 10:26:13
Great party, lots of fun! Fab shows. Lots of excellent costumes too. Agreement with Mr Blomfield, though I heard a few commercial tracks in the RHI, so the tide is turning. All in all a fantastic party, congrats to all involved!
Zakalwe - Mon 1 Oct 2001 11:35:36
Same old party guys, numbers obviously down, Sleaze is dying a slow death Mardi Gras. Put it out of it's misery and stop flogging the old horse. I know sum of you had a great time and I had fun too, but for the cost a lot more originality and serious effort is required to revive the beast. It may as well have been just another night at Arq!!
Mike - Mon 1 Oct 2001 12:10:36
I too agree with Stephen Blomfield. City Live went off and Jake Kilby rules my world!! Does anyone remember when a single space at a pary had a queue for 4 hours. When will Mardi Gras and the party committee wake up to itself and stop programming music that a select board of people want to hear and ignoring those who pay to go to their events. Why must the traditional Horden sounds infiltrate the RHI? Perhaps we all need to realise that the DJ's selected are not the only ones that exist in Sydney and that we dont all like three ARQ's at one party. It was very noticable that there were less tickets sold than in previous Sleaze Balls.
CFME - Mon 1 Oct 2001 17:20:29
I totally agree with Steven Bloomfields comments, wish I was in that venue to hear all those classic tracks!Unfourtunatly was unable to attend Sleaze. I just hope that at the Mardi Gras party the RHI or the Horden play such uplifting tracks, nothing better than hearing something good from the past mixed in with the new stuff. Cant wait for Mardi Gras to rock Sydney in 2002!
2 X Melbourne boys - Mon 1 Oct 2001 20:19:11
Didn't make it to Sleaze this year, but the Frisky recovery was brilliant. Crowd built from about 7.30pm onwards, with JoJo playing a fantastic 5 hour set. The unusual opening/closing time didn't seem to adversely affect the energy and spirit of the party in the least. Lighting was awsome, even more so that usual. Shows were ho-hum, but you don't go to Frisky for the shows anyway. Greg Bolodian did well, although it seemed to take him a few tracks to settle in (IMHO). Went to ARQ after, thought it was truly awful (though I hear Bardot was pretty good!) Not sure who the DJ was (certainly not any of the usual Sunday night DJ's), but it was hour after hour of nasty head-banging doof doof. Sounds like Sleaze was pretty good. Maybe Jake Kilby can team up with JoJo for the next Frisky? There's a thought : )

Note to Mardi Gras: Jane Kilby to have her own hall for Mardi Gras 2002 hehehehe :-)
NortiCub - Mon 1 Oct 2001 22:30:52
I love having choice of music at Sleaze and Mardi Gras. I go into the RHI to hear the mixed handbag, the Hordern for the slightly more acidic house and techno through to the pure bass of the Dome. Went into City Extra briefly to be met with the more commerical stuff - fine, I'm glad it's there. Long Live Variety within the one dance party! They did well this year. In some past years you couldn't tell one venue from the next. I described the sex venue in the Hordern to a friend of mine today and he was amazed how big I described it. It was packed full but was always easy to escape the crush. Well orchestrated Mardi Gras! Certainly the most straight Sleaze or Mardi Gras I've been to. My lesbian friends reported many attempts of straight men trying to pick them up with corny lines. I was even asked if I was straight by a man in harness and cap talking to me in Flinders Lane the next morning just because I was in the company of wimin. Hello?! I'm wearing a leather vest and short shorts - the message should be clear at a Sleaze recovery - not so! I don't have any solutions - I respect being able to invite straight friends who are cognizent. Just implore to the straight crowd that these are paramount G & L events - accept it and forget the Leagues Club approach.
Echidna - Mon 1 Oct 2001 23:01:54
Sleaze was absolutely fantastic!! The RHI was great and Greg Boladian ROCKS!!! The midnight show was crap though as was the drag queen on the giraffe... but Chrissy and Peta Morris made up for that!! Congratulations Mardi Gras...can't wait for the 2002 MG Party!!!

Mike and CFME, its great you loved City Live and CFME you make comment about choosing music a select board of people want to hear ------ hello but aren't you now doing the same thing ? Variety abounded at Sleaze which is how it should be. Everytime I walked into the RHI the dance floor was like a sardine can. I loved the Hordern especially the 2nd DJ ( sorry forgot name ) who was fantastic......................great party and Mike, it seems yours is the only negative comment so far...........maybe it was the goodies.....Thanks MG.
P - Tue 2 Oct 2001 10:42:47
P please don't misunderstand, I've been attending MG and Sleaze ball religiously since 1990 (and will continue to do so), but while the Mardi Gras party keeps going from strength to strength, Sleaze Ball just seems to have lost it's way. I'm hoping that the strength of these events isn't reliant on the quality or quantity of "goodies", but in strong, creative community support fostered by an organisation that understands how special and unique Sleaze Ball can be.
Mike - Tue 2 Oct 2001 12:17:10
Sometimes the simple things work well. I noticed 3 guys on the dance floor in the RHI. They had basic white T shirts on. One had the word GROWL on it. The other HOWL. The third MEOW. Kinda cute idea I thought (and they were kinda cute too).
- Tue 2 Oct 2001 12:38:47
i guess it could just be the terrible tuesdays talking, but i'm left with a bad taste after this year's sleaze, which is disappointing after a fab mardi gras party. i think it would have been a different experience had i not been subjected to the most revolting pick-up attempt in the dome by the gayest-looking straight boy i've ever seen, right after we arrived at 10.30. he even had the nerve to ask if we 'gorgeous girls were really lesbians' and 'if we ever missed cock'. i was more upset that i wanted to admit, and felt uncharacteristically self-conscious all night. i couldn't even bear walking through the crowds of gorgeous gayboys, for fear of an occasional, unwanted, truly sleazy appraisal from straight guys who seem to think that lesbians are only there to satisfy their long-held lust for a tasty threesome. i've never before had any problem with the diversity of sexuality on display at such events, but now i'm left feeling empty and exploited. sleaze crowds used to rock my world - all those gorgeous people with such an upforit and welcoming attitude - i hope whoever bought this guy his ticket thinks twice next time. ps. i'm glad so many other people had a great time, i'll try my best to regain my enthusiasm by mardigras time!
christy - Tue 2 Oct 2001 13:02:58
I had a fantastic time at Sleaze but it seems to be becoming a very straight event
- Tue 2 Oct 2001 13:05:56
Personally, except for City Live, I think the music was a bit the same. The crowd didn't seem as happy as previous years? Or maybe it was just me? As Echidna mentioned, the party was pretty straight... I was planning way more mischief with the other girls and it didn't happen!
- Tue 2 Oct 2001 13:33:43
How thoughtful of Kelly Gardiner(CEO of Mardi Gras) to assure all party goers that no sniffer dogs would be present at the party . What a wonderfully responsible approach! As a community we wonder why we have'nt the level of support and respect from the broader community we think we deserve .Why don't we start showing some responsibility. My experience so far of this years sleaze is one young boy I know on life-support in St.Vincents (not likely to last the week)and another friend in mental health bracing himself for the onslaught of psychotic episodes from party goers clogging up an already overused health system. All self-inflicted and with the communties' blessing if not encouragement. How sad we are .Especially given that are people in our midst fighting to stay alive and the world in the state its in and our solution is to annihilate ourselves on drugs keeping criminals rich and our self-esteem low. Congratulations Mardi Gras for once again affirming the myth we are a community of self-destructive freaks.
what next - Tue 2 Oct 2001 14:48:00
I got told this morning that there was some interesting remarks on this site in regards to Sleaze ball and the City Live venue. After seeing Stephen Blomfields comments above I felt compelled to put in my 20 cents worth. Now lets get to the facts about City Live and Jake Kilby's set of music. I do not know Jake Kilby personally however I am an acquantance of Stephen Blomfield and was a HUGE fan of Stephens style of music when he was a full time DJ (until he semi retired early this year in sheer frustration). Having said this there are quite a few things that need to be said about what went on at City Live at Sleaze. What Jake played was brilliant but it was a carbon copy job of what Blomfield's style of Dj'ing used to be. This in my opinion is a glowing tribute from Jake to Stephen who I know are close long time friends. I even noticed that Jake had sitting on top of one of the the turntables a small white rubber ducky. This item was Blomfields mascot that he had on display at EVERY single DJ gig he ever did including all the major dance parties that he did. It was an item that Stephen handed on to Jake when he gave DJ'ing away. Seeing Jake have it on display was the ultimate compliment of appreciation of friendship between the two. Having set that record straight let me get on to the night itself. I was in city live from start to finish and i ask this question - WHY WHY WHY did City Live close at 6am ? All the other halls went to 8am yet the most popular hall that had a line up for the majority of the night and was full to capacity at 6am got shut down. That would have to be one of the most ridiculous and stupid decisions in the history of any Mardi Gras run party ever held. Imagine my disgust at 6am having spent 5 hours dancing to the most brilliant popularly commercial music ever heard at a dance party in years and being told that my options for from 6am to 8am were ear bleeding techno in the Hordern or plod along house in the RHI. To summarise I have a few suggestions. For Mardi Gras next year I think City Live should once again be the hall for the "handbag" music. Jake Kilby should definitely get the gig again and Mardi Gras should go out of their way and do everything possible to drag Stephen Blomfield out of retirement and let him and Kilby play together in City Live because at this stage they are the ONLY two DJ's in this city who are prepared and capable of playing that style of music. Every other DJ in town is too busy ignoring extra pop/commercial music for fear of losing their precious credability. You only have to cast your minds back to the now defunked Free Fm dance parties at the Metro to remember what Blomfields music was all about ! **Stephen,if you read this I'm so sorry for embarrassing you**. If any of you feel as strongly as I do about Mardi Gras retaining this sort of music in City Live for all future parties I urge you to write to Mardi Gras. Contact emails addresses for the President, the party manager and the party production manager can all be found on Mardi Gras web site. Roll on Mardi Gars 2002 !!!!
Peter K - Tue 2 Oct 2001 15:12:00
If the parties are becoming to straight, it is the community who is to blame. We need to think about who we nominate as members and who we buy tickets for. Lastly we need to support these parties by attending. Alot of people do not go to the major parties but support the recoveries, this is their choice and I respect that, however, the money goes straight into the pocket of an individual not to the community. We can make MG and Sleaze very gay events by getting in and buying tickets to these events and thinking about who we buy tickets for and who we nominate as members.
- Tue 2 Oct 2001 15:15:14
Stephen Blomfields earlier comments have hit the nail firmly on the head. What Jake Kilby did in city live was what punters have been aching for for years. In fact may I be so bold as to say that what Kilby did has not been heard since the days when Blomfield himself was a DJ at Mardi Gras run events. This begs the question why has it been so long since he has done a party for SGLMG ? I certainly cant remember him doing a party since 1998 I'd say. Rumour has it he retired. Can anyone confirm this ? Well done to Kilby. Any DJ who has the guts to play unashamedly trashy pop dance music in the face of adversity from his peers gets 11 out of 10 in my book.
A>D - Tue 2 Oct 2001 15:23:19
christy: that sucks. Sorry you didn't have a good time. Have heard at least one of those stories from every MG/Sleaze party in the last 7-8 years from friends and acquaintances. Shoulda told us earlier... we would have dealt with him... ;)
Team Slayer #24 - Tue 2 Oct 2001 16:02:24
AS SUGGESTED ABOVE - THIS LETTER JUST EMAILED TO SGLMG PRESIDENT AND PARTY PRODUCTION MANAGER------ "Dear Kirsten and Julie,
I have taken your email address of the Mardi Gras web site to write to you about Sleaze Ball last Saturday night.
I have been inspired to write after seeing the many many comments on the gay web site "Pinkboard".
My overview of the party was that it was just OK. My comments are as follows....
1) Dome - Cannot comment. I didnt go in there.
2) Hordern - Looked fantastic but was only in there for 15 minutes cause the music was CRAP with a capital C (I hate hard house music but I do appreciate that many people do enjoy it and as a consequence I acknowledge that there is a market for it).
3) RHI - I have not missed a Mardi Gras or a sleaze ball since 1994. The RHI was my home because it was always the place where I could go to hear girly commercial music which is what I enjoy. I have seen the RHI over the last 2-3 years deteriorate into a space where the music has became EXACTLY the same as a normal Saturday night at ARQ. For me this is UNACCEPTABLE. So i moved on to City Live.
4) City Live was the most stunning uplifting fun place to be in. Jake Kilby was great and the music was nothing more than pop orientated "feel good" music. The crowd was also the gayest (and hot) crowd anywhere within the whole party. I took extreme interest and found it high irony that for a few hours on the night I saw one of Jakes best friends and mentor,Stephen Blomfield standing behind Jakes DJ box. How funny that Jake is Sydneys "flavour of the month" at the moment when he learnt how to DJ and based his DJ'ing style from Blomfield yet Blomfield has been ignored by Mardi Gras for over 5 years. Sorry for getting political but I am a friend of Stephens and to see him give DJ'ing away this year because organisations like SGLMG told him that his music style was inappropriate makes me so mad.
Please Please Please for all future events give the crowd a hall that plays mega commercial music. The RHI doesnt do this anymore like it used to. There are 1000's of people out there who dont want to hear the sort of stuff that is being dished out in the RHI,Hordern, and Dome at the moment. Thats why Caesars is the most popular Gay and Lesbian venue in Sydney at the moment, because it dishes out "trashy girly happy vocal pop dance music "
I would hope for a reply on this issue and now that it has been proven that "trash pop music" is back in vogue that people like Blomfield wont be told that they arent welcome to play at MG events in the future.
Yours Sincerlely,
Aiden Grant - Tue 2 Oct 2001 16:58:17
City Live rocked!! This was the first party where I didn't feel the desire to waste my time chatting - all I wanted to do was dance! If there's a possibility the City Live music will be repeated at MG 2002, then I'm counting down the days! By far the best Sleaze I've been to - it also helped that City Live didn't have as many sleazy straight boys as the other venues. In relation to Christy's experience, I seriously think that MG should enforce a rule that if a straight boy harrasses a dyke at our events they should be ejected from the party - their sleazy behaviour wouldn't be tolerated at a straight club so why should we allow it at our parties where they should know better. Hell, I've seen queers thrown out of the party for less offensive behaviour!

Errrrrrrrrrr hello everyone......instead of trashing other Halls and rambling posts.........can't you just thank MG for Jake Kilby and City Live and ask for the same at MG and future parties or is this a core group of friends doing a hard sell on the graffitti wall ??? The other Halls were equally as busy and popular. I preferred Hordern and it was always busy. Agree all venues should close at the same time but
Make it short and sweet and be nice - Tue 2 Oct 2001 17:51:11
I know I was really out of it on Saturday night but I desperately need somebody to put my mind at rest and tell me I wasnt hearing things at 3pm when in the RHI the DJ at the time (Sean Manley) closed his set with "She Bop" by Cyndi Lauper ? It totally did my head in and I'm positive it was the 1980's original and NOT an updated remix. If this is the case I have this question. Why did you do it,cause my observation was that it went down like a lead balloon.
losing my mind - Tue 2 Oct 2001 17:57:15
Team Slayer #24, you should have entered the costume pageant for "Best Dressed Group". I suggested this to Team Slayer #66 but was told the group preferred to listen to Feisty's set....oh well...

Handbag music is back with avengence thanks to Jake Kilby and City Live.Mardi Gras now need to make this style of music in City Live a permanent fixture. The only problem I can see is that Jake Kilby is the only working Sydney DJ in the city that has the capability to do this. The other one who could do it just as good quit full time DJ'ing because of his disillusionment with SGLMG.Quitting also occurreddue to the fact that besides Ceasars there is no other gay/lesbian club in Sydney that is accepting of handbag music.Mardi Gras have invited DJ's in the past to participate in working their parties without receiving a submission. I vote for a Kilby/Bloomfield city live on 2/3/2002. PS-losing my mind - Tue 2 Oct 2001 12:57:15 , yes you did hear "she bop" at 3am in the RHI. I have got NO idea what Sean Manley was thinking when he did that.
Recovering - Tue 2 Oct 2001 22:40:03
in my opinion it was the most mediocre party in years. the music was flat, the sound quality was poor, I spent most of the night walking around hoping to find something worth dancing to. I used to hate dissing the DJs but I think they were well below average at this party. I didnt see the "5 hour queue" to get in to city live at all. I popped in there quite a few times & walked straight in everytime (walked out just as quickly - not my cup of tea at all)
this is the onion of the poser - Tue 2 Oct 2001 22:49:50
City Live closing at 6am when it was the most popular venue on the night was the worst decision made by Mardi Gras in a long time. There must be an explaination for this and if somebody knows please let me know. Thanks to Jake the venue went off ! And what a venue it is ! Packed to the rafters but enough air flow not to die of heat exhaustion (unlike the other halls). It reminds me so much of the Metro with all those split levels.Cant help but agree about Mr Blomfields comments. What a loss he is to the DJ community if indeed he has given DJing away.Great Sleaze Ball, great crowd, great night ! To SGLMG Party production manager,
It looks like the message has finally sunk in with you guys that a huge majority of people DONT want to hear the standard Oxford Street music. Jake Kilby's music saved Sleaze Ball ! Its now your responsibilty to ensure that a pavilion is supplied at every future event that caters to the average gay or lesbian who doesnt go out every weekend. We are the sort of people that could be in the RHI, Hordern or Dome and not know a single song all night because of the fact that we dont live for going out on Oxford Street every weekend. Besides MG,Sleaze, and NYE Im lucky if I go out more than 3 times a year yet in the 4 hours i spent in City Live i knew just about every 2nd song. Its that ultra mainstream music that we the majority masses want at the parties that "WE" pay to attend. On pinkboard it says that DJ's like Steven Bloomfield have been ignored from selection in recent years because of his preference for the sort of music that Kilby plays. If this is so then you should be ashamed of yourselves. Fancy driving a DJ to retirement for feeling unwanted when "WE" the punters feel the total opposite about that DJ's style of music ! One of my fondest Mardi Gras memories was a set of music Blomfield played in the RHI in the late 1990's.He was never chosen again after that performance. Anyway, Thats my say on the issue. Please pass on my congratulations to Jake Kilby for making my night. As for the other DJ's from the other halls well they did there job adequately I suppose. Yours Truly,
Matthew - Wed 3 Oct 2001 00:14:39
Yawn. The next generation of music "experts" have arrived. "My music is the only music that is good, right." 2 years ago the hard house people were saying exactly the same things. Yes, there is a demand for this kind of music at present. Yes, City Live was crowded. No, this is not the only music that people were dancing to all night. Maybe, Mardi Gras will have this music next party, even in a larger space, if they can organise it. Yes, people will keep complaining.

Why did City Live close at 6am? That was probably when it was organised that it would close. Try to imagine how difficult it is for organisers to change the closing time at very short notice. Everyone was still dancing in the other halls at 8am, so why didn't they keep them open?
Arti - Wed 3 Oct 2001 09:14:50

Warning: The messages giving reasons for Stephen Blomfield's actions are bordering on libelous.
Panther - Wed 3 Oct 2001 13:17:52
Thanks for that Arti. Why cant they just thank MG for City Live and ask very nicely for it to be a regular event,to change the closing time but instead they spew such venom on MG on how dare they ignore this kind of music and how dare they close at 6am and how dare they destroy a DJ's career.............wake up you idiots. Reverse the roles and think of your reaction if you copped abuse like that and then think again how nice it would be to receive a lot of complimentary posts thanking you for Jake and City Live and asking for it again. Why oh why does there have to be a vendetta levelled at MG. The other Halls were not empty, the other Halls had plenty of people dancing and only once did I see a queue at City Live with about 6 people in it. Lighten up, you have a point so try and be nice. 4 halls is enough to give a good variety.
You get with Honey than Vinegar - Wed 3 Oct 2001 14:14:56
City Live closed at 6.00 am because it has a different license to the rest of the party site and it is my understanding that Mg fought hard to have this license extended as long as possible. For all those crying foul about not having a bigger space to listen to Jakes style of music, you should be thankful that he even got to play and that MG took the step of adding the extra space. City live was also packed to the rafers at MG when it hosted hard house music. In my opinion all 4 halls provided vastly differnt music and all four halls were extremely busy. So the question is which style of music do you put take out to cater for handbag? Do you cut out the commercial trance and pop from the RHI & if so where do the 5000 punters that love that music move too? Do you move the hardhouse back to City Live? There were 4500 people screaming the house down all night long and they would face the same problems as those who lined up to get in to city live? My concern is that to many people are all to prepared to complain without offering an alternitive solution. I think the answer is to blend the music in the RHI more than it has been. After all the music in RHI was pretty camp, lots of Kylie, Gerie, Cyndi Lauper and other bits of handbag.

Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance....: Thanks for the vote of confidence. :) The group did discuss entering the competition prior to the party, but as long-time Feisty supporters, she was the main reason that most of Team Slayer were there that night.

Well done to all the DJs, lighting crew, production, performers, security, and everyone else involved in Sleaze.

P.S. She Bop rocked... as did Chrissy. I'm showing my age. :P
Team Slayer #24 - Wed 3 Oct 2001 15:01:01

Presumably "She Bop" was played just prior to the "I Touch Myself" show because it is also masturbation. I guess it kinda made sense to play it, but would anyone get the connection? I bought that 12 inch when I was at school and it sounded terribly dated and just not what I wanted to hear, Crap choice. Despite some chronic music in the RHI, where I spent the whole night, I had a blast, despite getting up to no mischief whatsoever, no even a snog!! Dancing with my friends was too much fun.

I'm curious, been following the comments here and having placed a couple of my own, was wondering if we could all conduct a small exercise, when posting include when you attended your first Sleaze, and your age. Lets see if any pattern cums out? Me - first time 1990, 35 years old

I thought Sean Manley played "she bop" as a little tease towards trhe show that came after it - there both about masturbation - everyone I knew figured ity out straight away. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I loved She-Bop and sung along to every word. I noticed a lot of other people around me enjoying it too! We're all different and we should just accept that if you don't like a song there's someone else on the dance floor who does. I also loved the hard music in The Hordern. I must be wierd because I enjoy more than one style of music.

My 2 cents worth... I thought the range of options was good. When i wanted something harder I went to the Hordern, but spent most of my time in the RHI. The Dome was good as well for the 20 mins or so I was there. I didn't see any kind of queue for City Live and I went there a few times. It seems there are a few people being very vocal about this making it seem like a bigger issue than it is. I agree, the music was good and a refreshing option for those that wanted it, although it seems all 4 spaces were pretty busy throughout the night. The RHI wasn't the typical 'packed in like sardines' it has been the few parties I've been to but it was full. The only complaint I had was the first set in the RHI.... isn't the first set normally pretty light and high on songs that people recognise, thus enticing them to the dance floor? I didn't hear a single tune that made me want to dance, so the party didn't really start 'til 12.30 for me. Good to hear some familiar songs in the RHI, particularly Mandy Moore 'In My Pocket' - that was amazing! Janet Jackson was also fabulous. About straights at the party, I didn't notice as many as I have in the past. Again, it is up to US to control this, and members to use their brains before purchasing tickets for them. I had a fantastic time with lots of wonderful straights this time round, but it's too bad some spoil it for the majority.

It was a different Sleaze for me. I still liked RHI but was a bit put off by the 12AM set(Sean Manley)the style of the music wasn't uplifting enough. Then my mates and I moved into the Hordern and was pleasantly surprised by its dynamic beats. Loved it, but had to go back to RHI as Greg Boladian would be playing. The rest of the night was mostly spent at RHI. Why? They played music they play at ARQ so I loved it. Would be good however to have more special mixes of popular songs that we hear on the radio or in clubs something we like at that time or some remixes of classic songs. Some Madonnas, Kylies, Pet Shop Boys, etc would be very nice. Didn't go to City Live, too busy at RHI :) I had a fairly good time with my mates and all the familiar faces(would be much better if my lover spent more time with me though...) I'm counting down to the PRIDE instead, they threw a great NYE party 2001, my best so far, for their great music, such as special mixes of Mel C's I Turn To U and some other great pop tracks. So I'm looking forward to that. Nevertheless, congrats to MG for a Sleaze well-run. Maybe listen to what people want to listen try to accommodate a bit.

Since I have like 2 hours before work this morning, here goes ... I'm surprised at the utter lack of any appreciation for any other DJ apart from Jake Kilby. Makes me wonder whether the other DJs have friends or not. I did venture into every hall at various times during every DJ's set for a listen and each hall was going off immaterial of music styles played. That just shows that every taste was catered for and the punters were in that hall for that style of music. So, how can anyone justify that it's "bad"? Unless of course if we used the old "It's bad just because I don't like it" spoilt brat attitude. YES, City Live was good. Not primarily my taste in music but it was good and Jake did well. As for 'She Bop', can't we appreciate one little 'fun' track without taking the music all too seriously all the time? Not my kinda track, but hell, the man played it for some purpose so why not just go with the flow? After all, the other tracks he played throughout his set were for a purpose. And lastly, be thankful that handbag was added to Sleaze. Personally, I think it inappropriate as it's not 'sleazy'. If we all want to keep to themes then maybe have more stringent music policies. What I'm saying is be appreciative of the various music styles offered and that no one style is better than the other. By the way, I'm no guru on music, but do realise that the world wide trend in music is getting a lot more underground, funkier and less vocals. It seems that certain quarters in Sydney are becoming unaccepting of new music trends when we go out. Maybe it might be better if they stayed home and listened to their own cds so as not to have a disappointing night out. Just sharing my own opinions and no disrespect intended to anyone.

By the way, I'm no guru on music, but do realise that the world wide trend in music is getting a lot more underground, funkier and less vocals. It seems that certain quarters in Sydney are becoming unaccepting of new music trends when we go out. Does this mean we have to accept the new music styles being shoved down our throats. I hope not. Just because Sleaze is meant(?) to be sleazy, this doesnt preclude handbag from the playlists. The ten or so people i went with only bought tickets after Jake and City Live was announced as being an extra venue. Should I desire the heavier music i succumb and pay for ARQ. Much cheaper.
CFME - Thu 4 Oct 2001 18:27:19
Congratulations to Mardigras and to Jake Kilby on being the success story of sleaze it certainly was a great nite.Must agree with previous posts about the way in which Jakes Djing has been heavily influenced by stephen blomfield over the years. It was like a trip down Flinders Hotel memory lane in city live.Well done to all involved and lets make sure City live becomes the home of mega handbag for all future parties.I just wonder what chance getting Stephen out of retirement ? A Kilby & Blomfield gig for one night only. Now that would be worth the price of entry.

I had a brilliant time and watched so many ... from so high up ... you all looked great & proud & sexy and available?
returned - Thu 4 Oct 2001 23:20:37
In reply to CFME...Mate, you've shed light on your own answer as you and friends went because you liked the option of handbag being offered in one of the halls. That means you liked that handbag was included at Sleaze. There's nothing wrong with that, whereas you wouldn't have gone otherwise. You would have probably spent a Saturday night at Caesar's (which I think is fantastic). So what's the fuss? I'm glad to see that you are aware of where to go should you rather "heavier music". And NO, you shouldn't have to "accept the new music styles being shoved down [your] throat" because it's the same principle of not going to that venue on a given night if you don't like what's offered. Remember that music evolves and revolves as does all other trends and yesterday's sounds do sound like ... yesterday. And so do Hex Hector mixes. Once again, my intention is not to incite debate but just to create awareness that there are many angles to look at, not just through the tunnel vision of our own perceptions. OK, everyone get off your knees now.
Vigilante - Thu 4 Oct 2001 23:31:10
Its been so long since I spent any amount of time in the RHI, I thought that it was still was handbag. People above are moaning about City Live being packed and people having to queu because of the popularity of handbag and that it doesn't get played in the RHI, but what about City Live during Mardi Gras? Also packed and queus to get in - and it was hard house. Moving handbag back into the RHI sounds fine by me - but please can we keep the Hordern hard house and hard trance. By the way, about my only low point for the night in a night full of highs was walking into Dome at 3.30am to hear Summer Night City by Abba playing. People were walking out in droves - and we were right behind them.

Take note morons of uncle arthurs post, thats how you should do it. Your posts of demands/how dare you/vitriole just gets up peoples noses ( ours and MG's ). As Vigilante said, all the Halls were going off and all packed with happy people. Thank you MG for the Hordern.

What was the name of the remix of Sandstorm played by Anthony Whitlock at the end of his set, and what was the vocal track mixed with it. Help. Also, I thought the Arq recovery was great, they always make the effort to get different DJ's in for these nights, Paulo this time, Mark Falco for Hand in Hand and best of all was Peter Rauhofer for NYE Recovery. Thanks guys keep it up. Mardi Gras should look at some of these DJ's for MG02 - especially the very talented and very out Mr Rauhofer

'Happy as can be', you are right and I agree that uncle arthur's posting seems to be (the only) one that comes across as a genuine compliment that's neutral.
Vigilante - Fri 5 Oct 2001 15:51:47
Hmm - after reading this board I'm not sure whether I should've been at Sleaze r not, it was the first I've missed since 1992. Seems like most people were catered for - but I can't quite work out where the majic was. I guess (as I wasn't there) that Sleaze was another big capacity dance party - what was different? There was nothing in the DJ line up that made me jump off my chair and be there this year. Apart from the superexpanded hardhouse line up, I sensed more of the same in styles used for the DJ line up. I found it at Mardi Gras this year as well -every DJ was fine, but none were very different to anything that has been at MG before. Where were the pioneers like Alkins? In fact that's where I was last Saturday, listening to Alkins take daring risks in Melb - and I had a better time than at any dance party I've been to in years. I think I'd like to see some more risky options at Mardi Gras - balance the fluff and the doof with anything dark & mysterious. Less Hex Hector (which I agree with Vigilante is yesterday's music - 1987 with beter acoustics) and more dark drums I say.
lovin' it - Fri 5 Oct 2001 20:33:20
Why does a posting have to be neutral to be genuine ? That doesnt make sense. The whole concept of having an opinion is that it is meant to favour one side of a debate. If everyone was neutral on every topic of discussion it would be a very bland world indeed. For the record, (in my opinion) the mega camp music in city live worked a treat and (in my opinion) should be supplied at all future parties. I say this because (in my opinion) the RHI has lost its commercial edge that it used to be renowed for. Walking into the RHI was musically (in my opinion) just like any other night at Arq. Thanks to Mardi Gras for allowing true handbag a new home at Fox Studios.
Just my opinion - Fri 5 Oct 2001 20:46:58
I think Jake Kibly is the best DJ in australia. he doesnt pretend to be cool or cutting edge like so many others around the world. I love watching VideoHits on saturday mornings and my fave radio station is 2dayFM, so I can really apreciate what he is doing for the sydney club scene. the big clubs like Home & Tank should get DJs like him and not those trendy posers that try to be "experimental". I'm really curious to hear Stephen Bloomfeld after reading so much about him on pinkboard. I only started clubbing a few years ago so I have not been able to hear any of his music. I also thought Sleaze was good & met a nice man from Coffs Harbour on the dancefloor ( hi Russell ! )

Arh what a Sleaze. Fantastic. Up until 1.30am I was in RHI and a short time in the Dome, as showing a virgin the rounds. I do not Hordan so we only walked through! But then we five of us were at CityLive from what I thought was an hr but was in fact 2.5! The music was great. The crowd was great. Then we went back to RHI and a few crashed out at 5am! But The virgin was there to the end and from all accounts he had a great time. I only have one question "Does anyone know or remember the name of the song that was played in RHI at about 4am. It has a real tribal drum beat. Or if the DJ at that time has a music list of what was played?" I had ticket 685! so when do the MG02 go on sale as I'm out to get the lowest number!

Had a great time at Sleaze, went too quickly though! Was the RHI sound wrong? I have to agree with jeffgg regarding arq recovery - thought it was crap and had an ordinary night as a result (all friends agreed, not my party favours at fault!)...dj Paulo dished out extremely boring, repetitive doof doof. Did anyone out there attend any of the other recoveries? How was GAG, GAY, Frisky, Ice, Milk'n'2 et al? Middle Bar was pretty dead Sunday night.

I wish people would think outside the square they live in, to quote IKEA MG covered all styles of music at this party and yet people still complain Also I find it strange that this is all aimed at Jake and yet I heard commerical music in other halls as well, I also freely went in and out of City Live as well, without any line?? But, then again I wasn't posted out the front all night so I could of missed something easily In this wonderful city we have all types of people who love all types of music and this city does its best to cater for all Commercial and Handbag music is alive and well in dozens of venues with dozens of DJs playing it What some people seem to want is the impossible and thats the style of music they want, in the venue that they want it in and stuff everyone else To give an example all the praise given to Jake above, there is also an equal amount of people who dislikes that style and yep, they were the other few thousand people dancing to the music in other venues or have they been forgotten about There is also a large group of people who have a great time with most styles of music.....and then you get the whiners Jake and all the other DJs are doing the job that they were hired to do and the wonderful thing about a dance party is that you can most of the time find the music style that you like You can relate this to anywhere in this city if you care to take the blinkers off - If you love Jakes music then find out through the papers where he is playing and support him and if you don't then be daring and go to one of the dozens and dozens of venues and styles of music on offer and support them My point is do your homework, find a DJ you like and support them If you want to change the DJs at a dance party then get on a committee or even better still become a DJ yourself and then you will get a real idea on how stupid this whole issue has always been, because believe me when you get behind some turntables playing the commercial music you like and some idiot comes up to you and says "can't you play something harder" or "can't you play some trance" it will make you understand everything that I have said above PS..Jake & Stephan are great DJs, but I do know dozens of DJs who play the same style as they do, I really do worry that some of you don't venture past one or two venues and that scares me or.......... you should be all thanked for the great networking that you are doing for both of them
