Pinkboard: Party Graffiti Wall 24
Do you enjoy going to the local for a few drinks, a chat with friends and the possibility of meeting someone new? Do you come home with stinging eyes? In the morning do you notice the smell of smoke all through the clothes you wore, and even your hair?
Many people enjoy a cigarette, especially when they are drinking. It is a part of their socialising. It is something to do with their hands. It is an adiction that can be very difficult to shake.
In many countries there is legislation banning smoking indoors in public areas, including in pubs and clubs. This is slowly being introduced in the states of Australia, and our pubs and clubs must comply with the legislation.
If it is post-party Tuesday or Wednesday and you are feeling a bit down, please refrain from sharing your depression with the rest of the readers.
Please be constructive with your comments and criticism.

New Wall Yay !!!!
i always get the new wall :) - Thu 3 Jul 2003 23:22:23

Mr Panties - Fri 4 Jul 2003 00:59:37
Next time, when up the ramp at the Shift and you see a lost cutie looking around, take my hand and show me where the sex is !! I keep missing it for some reason....... :o)

If smokers think for one second that non smokers wont make the enforcement of non smoking areas in clubs a priority for them then they're kidding themselves.
For far too long non smokers have had to have passive smoke jammed into their lungs and have no right of objection.
Now the ball is swinging back in the court of non smokers and arent we just going to just revel in this !!!
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 12:11:49
does this wall have a backroom?
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 12:12:48
Mr Panties, smokers need to take the filthy habit outside of this non-smoking area - only fog machines allowed in this room.
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 12:29:00
But fog machines upset my asthma.....
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 13:45:02
I'll do more than take your hand Josh :o)
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 13:45:28
Just love that guy who does the runway routine downstairs at the Shift.
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 14:40:54
Don't get me excited....it's unfair that I seem to be missing out....each time I've wandered up the ramp there seems to be a security guard hanging around.....
Josh - Fri 4 Jul 2003 14:56:51
Fri 4 Jul 2003 12:11:49 I think smokers will see it as inevitable. Restaurants and cafes are now non-smoking in NSW as are, pretty much, all workplaces. So are sex clubs. They've been non-smoking for over a year now....Bars/clubs/party venues (I bet Sleaze does a smokefree area this year) are the last smoking hold-outs and I'd give them about 2 years max on current progress.

Why do they call Chip Dj Chip ? To me he is Chip. A lot of people would know he is a dj. They dont go Dj Jake Kilby or Dj Paul Goodyear !

The smoke thing is going to happen .....slowly ....just like it did with the restaurants.
no one is out to be nasty...just let it happen.
We have had to put up with it for this long....slow and gentle...you know we are going to win out. :-)
I look forward to the nights when i can come home not stinking of cigarettes.
Being aggresive about inforcement is not the way... just let it happen you know its going to. (be nice) :-)

I want to comment on how disgusted i am with the patrons of Mancacle 2 weeks ago on a Friday night, i brought my friend who was from Germany to Manacle (it was his 1st time ever to Sydney), being a cold and wet night, he wore his leather jacket, when we got inside, he hung his jacket on a hook under the table where we were standing, about 3 hours later, we got ready to go home, some rotten lowlife bastard had stolen his leather jacket, my mate was very devastated and cried all the way home, that jacket was his boyfriends who died in a car accident so had huge sentimental value to him, me being a sydney born and bred sider was very embrrassed and appalled about this, i want to say to the person who stole the jacket, shame on you, what you have done will come back to you one day in the future when you are least expecting it, my mate has now gone back to germany (berlin) vowing never ever to return to sydney and most of all barracks and he is making sure a lot of his mates in germany and holland knows about what happened, i just want to say to the person who stole it, you are not worth knowing and i hope you are feeling very bad inside yourself for the rest of your life!!!
Ex manacle regular - Fri 4 Jul 2003 18:04:21
Dj Nota-dj , really. do we need to hear so much about a dj that delivers so little ? I'm so over the constant publicity some of these guys get. do we hear about them anywhere else ? no. wonder why
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 18:10:41
So tell us why you think you're cute Josh ?
Just curious - Fri 4 Jul 2003 18:35:25
Yeah Josh, lets see your gaydar profile :-)
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 19:04:41
dear josh - the reason you keep missing it is cause there is way too much smoke in the shift!!!
encourage the shift to enforce a no-smoking policy, the haze will clear, and oral fixations of a different kind will be all too apparrent
boom-tish-da-boom!

What is it about Queens? They'll chuck any old non-herbal industrial solvent up their noses, arms, butts and mouths for a cheap old thrill, but will shriek like stuck pigs if someone draws near with a nicotine cigarette. Now a marijuana cigarette......that's different. It's medicinal...........
- Fri 4 Jul 2003 23:02:51
"Dj Nota-dj", I simply like to have two (2) names to a DJ. If there is no last name, slipping in a prefix like "DJ" is a bit lke "Mr" or "Ms" in this context.
"Fri 4 Jul 2003 18:10:41" Because he is a mate and a good DJ. This is not publicity, just a bit of light-hearted hype. Is that SO bad?
aw c'mon and play - Fri 4 Jul 2003 23:55:53

Actually, i think you'll find that the ones who do snort/suck/shaft all that stuff are the ones who are the smokers.

This is the opinion of the poster.
Ex manacle regular - Fri 4 Jul 2003 18:04:21
Whilst I sympathise with your friends misfortune, I think most people would know not to leave something that valuable just lying around in a public venue in ANY large city anywhere in the world.

Sat 5 Jul 2003 09:01:26 I'll just bet you haven't got a shred of evidence to back that wonderfully off-the-wall claim up....

We're a weird lot. Pills, powders, potions, uppers, downers, inside-outers - sure. Tobaccco - ewww! The dilemma: If you took a pill and you had the best time, but it made your friends smell, would you still do it?
non-smoker - Sat 5 Jul 2003 12:34:00
I hate the smell of smoke and think that in confined spaces it's unreasonable. However despite us non smokers having expressed that opinion many times, there are a lot of people out there who only smoke when they're out in clubs. Do I want my smoking friends to stop? Yes. Do I want my them to stay home? No. As an aside: I can just imagine 20 people standing outside Arq having a ciggie in the winter like they do outside corporate offices now. :-)
non-smoker - Sat 5 Jul 2003 12:37:20
New Mardi Gras need to pull their finger out and get some hype for Sleaze ball happening soon. Its only 3 months away. How many days ? I dunno, ask countdownboy.
- Sat 5 Jul 2003 13:49:10
But you don't have winter in Sydney.
Paul D - Sat 5 Jul 2003 13:50:15
i also sympathise with the german man that lost his jacket..we all have had things stolen..not good ..but blame the rotten INDIVIDUAL that stole it..not the venue nor the city and its people...i beleive there is something called a coat check that any major club/venue does have - it is a secure place for such apparel - a dollar os so for peace of mind aint too bad ... this is definately a big city where trust is a fine line.
i think the venues will be providing smoking rooms ?? am i wrong...while not ideal also not a bad idea ... i dont like smoking around non smokers - but i do (personally) enjoy a cigarette with a drink - i would find it hard to go without in a club/pub environment but hate inflicting my habit on the nons' - please can we find a happy medium without being too militant.
buddy one - Sat 5 Jul 2003 14:59:52
dear ex manacle regular - are u now an ex manacle regular because of this instant...how can u blame manacle ?
sorry - it is a shame - but not manacle's fault.
- Sat 5 Jul 2003 15:03:36
I dont smoke and most of my friends do. Whilst they would never do it in a confined space like a car, I personally dont mind them smoking around me in
a nightclub but thats my personal opinion. At least they should have an area within the club they can at least smoke.
After all we live in a city, and I seem to remember reading an article about pollution in the city which equalled smoking a cigarette a day ( someone can correct me on that nbr, I'm not sure ).
Unfortunately most airconditioning pumps air in. If they installed some pretty strong exhaust fans it wouldn't be so bad.
Just my opinion - Sat 5 Jul 2003 15:29:20
arq ? that place still around ?
- Sat 5 Jul 2003 16:46:00
Paul D - Sat 5 Jul 2003 13:50:15 We don't have real winter, winter in Sydney, we just have 'not summer.' The whole place is built round the notion of summer so, when it's not summer it kind of runs out of energy. In colder climates people do winter much better. Here we just kind of hangout till Sleaze comes round again...
- Sat 5 Jul 2003 17:23:28
Dear "Ex Manacle regular". Sorry about your mates jacket. Im sure telling all his friends in Germany and Holland how evil the manicure bar in Sydney is will bring his jacket back. Hmmmn... By the way smoking in California always means one has to go huddling in the car park with other smokers. It's very "smoking behind the shed at school" - i.e. kinda cool! a group of deviants being proud tobacco slaves. I met great people in the smoking huddles, you dont have to listen to crap hinrg music, always scored some weed, and you can actually feel like youre naughty. Bring it on I say!
rock sucker. - Sat 5 Jul 2003 18:55:26
Fancy leaving a sentimental jacket that was worth a fortune in more than just a dollar sense in a public area and not keep an eye on it.
Talk about totally stupid. He deserved to lose it given that sort of careless behaviour.
- Sat 5 Jul 2003 22:31:27
The whole things a bit weird if you go out in Darlinghurst as a smoker. firstly, we could'nt find the carpark or the automobile when we stepped out to go for a huddle n, being cool two. What happens when summer comes around again and all the bar windows are open to allow for the breeze or will they remain closed to keep the toxins emitted from Sydney street traffic out?

I really hope this is not implying what it suggests or you win the sash for most elitist queen 2003.
"Avoid that Crowd" - as one of that crowd, and as a person who has never even stolen a button, I am pretty offended by this implication. Maybe you ought to go visit Manacle, meet some of the faces and you will see how proposterous what you suggest is.
Why does every twink think they are going to get abused or pack-raped at The Barracks/Manacle?

Try leaving a leather jacket hanging in a bar in Hamburg, Berlin or Amsterdam and see how long it will last before being nicked. Sorry your friend lost a treasured possession, but did he come to Sydney thinking we have a totally crime-free city here? pleeeeeeeease.

The manacle doesnt have a cloakroom, i feel sorry for the german guy that had his jacket stolen, cant blame him for having to put it on the hook under the table, manacle NEEDS a cloakroom because when its cold and wet outside, naturally we want to wear our jackets to keep us warm, but once we are in manacle, we have to take our jackets off because its very warm and there is no cloakroom so we are forced to put it in a place that anyone can have access to, Mancle NEEDS a cloakroom so we can ensure this doesnt happen again (its not good if overseas people hear bad stories about manacle and dont come in).

the club bar (lowerbar) at Manacle has a coat rack behind the bar where the barman will place your jacket if you ask nicely.
No one is responsible for your jacket - leather or otherwise except for yourself. Sit on it or keep it on your arm.
The Manacle boys are working very hard to make it a very warm (friendly + toasty) and welcoming place - please give your feedback to them, not just to an anonymous list so they can make it better.

The production shows at QUEEN at the Shift club on saturday night were basically the creation of one man - Ashley Swift (although someone else did co-choreograph some parts). Ashley is also fully responsible for the Divastated shows on Friday nights at the Shift... and most people will agree they are amazing. Ashley's shows managed to completely turn around fridays from 8 people each night to around 800. This happened in a matter of weeks once the original Divastated shows began. The Shift, of course, has supported the shows with lots of promotions and advertising (especially for QUEEN). In fact, the only in-house nights that have worked for the Shift have been when Ashley is involved. My question is this - what will happen if Ashley leaves? Will the Shift be able to maintain its current momentum or will they have to start from scratch?

Sam - Mon 7 Jul 2003 17:01:10 What makes you think that it's drag - sorry, 'production shows' - that's pulling the punters in to the Shift? Has there been some punter's questionnaire or something? I kind of see Drag shows as the ongoing, monotonous backdrop to gay life. They're not something you rush off specially to see - unless you're straight and find them really 'wild.' A couple of guys dressed up as chicks with some twinky dancers chucked in does not an artform make..

RE:queen (Sun 6 Jul 2003 21:10:15)and Re:Mon 7 Jul 2003 17:47:52
I do agree with you here sometimes, however I love places where drag performers are roaming personal hosts. After seeing so many shows, individual performers tend to stand out a little more up close. I was however very impressed to hear that one of the shows actually featured Courtney Act singing... not bad? Missed it this week but will make an effort to actually check it out next time.
Also DJ Peter Fam was great!!!!
- Mon 7 Jul 2003 22:53:54
Mon 7 Jul 2003 17:47:52 - You obviously have a very limited and generalised view of drag which less people seem to share these days. There are all kinds of different shows and certain drag queens are far more talented and cutting edge than others. I have been involved with the Shift for some time now. Have you been to the club on a friday? The shows are amazing... and certainly not just your average 'stonewall' or 'newtown hotel' style drag show. The majority of patrons agree with this and the crowd is constantly blown away. This was the sole reason friday nights started to become busy. You would probably be one of the few (and I mean like 3 or 4 out of 800 or so) patrons who I see going to the bar to order drinks during a performance. The rest of the audience is engrossed. Also, history shows the only in-house nites that have ever worked at the Shift club (since its reincarnation) have been when a major drag show is the centrepiece (Ashley Swift shows specifically)... all other in-house nights have not done well at all. This is why Shift ONCE AGAIN had to re-launch their Saturday nites, this time with 2 of Ashley Swift's huge shows as the main attraction. Needless to say, this pulled in the crowds.

They would have to be committed to hosting the club, week in, week out, & be very good at looking after people.
Suggestions?
- Tue 8 Jul 2003 17:16:50
On July 1 2003 Government regulations came into effect that require ALL clubs to create areas within their venue where smoking is now NOT ALLOWED.
This particulary relates to the fact that smoking is now not allowable within a venue at the point where a staff member has contact with customers at counter areas. This now means that any person working in a club or pub should be able to expect that they not have direct face to face contact with any smoking customer. Definition of counter can be extended to a bar , a cloak room , a DJ Box (anywhere a staff member may have face to face contact with a customer) .
Also a non smoking "area" is to be designated in bars in addition to the fact that licenced venues where more than one bar area exists are encouraged to giving consideration to making one bar area totally non smoking. In non smoking areas (including all counter areas and bars) ashtrays , matchbooks and nearby cigarette machines are to be removed or relocated elsewhere to areas where smoking is currently allowable. Venues with air conditioning, open windows or ventilation systems are NOT EXEMPT from these regulations.
These regulations do not become law until later in the year (December) however it is now a required regulation and are expected to be implemented immediately.
These regulations will be further extended on July 1 , 2004 when a club or pub MUST have at least one whole room of its premisis totally non smoking.
It should be noted that not one single gay bar or club that I can think of is currently is adhering to the new regulations that came into effect last week.
I can say for certain that as soon as the general public is made aware of these new regulations that the management of gay bars and clubs are going to be bombarded with people insisting that the regulations be put into effect.
Its going to get messy !!!
Any venue that hasnt got their shit together and got non smoking areas happening by the time these regulations are passed into law in December are going to be run out of business by people regularly reporting these venues into the Health Department.
Watch out for a full story in SX News in the next week or two on this topic !!
People are laughing this subject off at the moment thinking it will go away.
It will not go away.... Guaranteed.
Let the inspections begin !!!

These are the sort of posts that should not be allowed on this site and moderaters should delete them.
Unless the poster is prepared to justify "WHY" Queen was crap then the post is nothing more than a "shit stir" in my opinion.
People need to justify themselves on this board if they are going to put something or someone down in my opinion.
Tell us why you think it was crap - Wed 9 Jul 2003 15:03:35
Would you care to elaborate as to why you thought QUEEN was crap ?
Why not, instead of just berating the party, explain why you thought the party was crap and suggest possible improvements that would make your party experience a more enjoyable one. I dare say the organisers/promoters or people they know read this board and it gets back to them. Having something constructive to say may bring about a change to your liking.....
Just an idea......
I thought QUEEN was great....thanks The Midnight Shift for a fun night !

Onwards, now ->
Do you know if Alex Taylor is playing at Arq this Thursday, P*L*E*A*S*E
holding out for Alex - Wed 9 Jul 2003 15:40:55
YES hello I had a brilliant time being a QUEEN,also you crap head.(Pardon did i say that?). Four days to lavish what?
- Wed 9 Jul 2003 15:42:44
"Queen was crap" was a perfectly acceptable opinion if you ask me. I wasn't there, so don't know if I agree or not but, come on, why can't people accept the fact that not liking something isn't necessarily the same as being negative? And, imagine this posting - "Queen was brilliant. I had a blast" - would people be demanding to know exactly WHY and HOW this person had such a great time? I think not! If people want to express their opinion succinctly, let them - otherwise at least be fair and slag off everyone who jots down a brief favourable report of a night out.

Tell us why you think it was crap - Wed 9 Jul 2003 15:03:35 Are you serious Luv?
It's a grafitti wall upon which all manner of people can post whatever they choose, within the guidelines. If we follow your logic we'd also have to demand that people who claim that the Shift was 'great' substantiate their opinions as well. Wouldn't we?
- Wed 9 Jul 2003 16:16:49
alex should be this week at arq cause roger was last week

This post is pretty much like saying "Lavish was crap" even before the event is on. Why aren't you or your friends going?

To praise something not giving a reason is perfectly fine. Its a POSITIVE comment that doesnt hurt anybodys feelings.
To critisise something not giving a reason is wrong. Its a NEGATIVE comment that probably hurts somebodys feelings and leaves that hurt person asking why ? They deserve to be told why.
In the main, negative posts not making any justifying comment are normally written by shit stirers who werent even there
Negative comments need to be justified or face the moderators axe in my opinion.
Be more positive !! - Wed 9 Jul 2003 16:44:15
Re: Queen was crap-
1/Nothing wrong with a good shit stir I say.
2/Anyway , who cares if someone anonymous hated it?
3/I'm pleased that he/she didn't bore us with the details as to why they hated it.
Queen WAS crap - Wed 9 Jul 2003 16:44:34
queen was crap ?
why then was it so packed and the people screaming (positively) to the shows and dancing away happily ??
go back to ningcompoopland so we can have some fun!
- Wed 9 Jul 2003 17:04:28
Be more positive !! - Wed 9 Jul 2003 16:44:15 If negative comments are obviously written by people who 'weren't even there', then you've got nothing to worry about.
On the other hand, the increasingly hysterical insistence that the Midnight Shift can only be spoken about in sort of - 'they offered me eternal life but I said no, just give me Queen at the Shift' - terms, is starting to get a tad worrying.......
- Wed 9 Jul 2003 23:20:45
puh-leeze.....so it's a drag show that will fill a club these days? well, i never!!!! The reason the shift is expanding is cause ARQ is tired and the clubbing equivalent of S-Club 7 (no gentle reader, that was not a complement!)
Besides being full of unworthy ex-trade, ARQ is trash male-barbie doll city! The midnight shift (CLUB daahling)is refreshing by comparison.
(by the way Mr Panther - that is NOT a generalisation!)

Ms Golightly - Wed 9 Jul 2003 23:32:39
Some interesting opinions, but I am still not convinced that not liking a night out is the same as being negative. People are people and different people have different tastes. Whether it's about a club night out, a movie, a song or whatever, people are going to have different opinions. Is someone who says "i think Daddy Day care was awful" necessarily a negative person? And if there really are promoters out there whose feelings are hurt and who start blubbing because someone didn't like a night they organised, maybe they are in the wrong business.
People need to ligten up. Unfettered praise requires no more intelligence than unfettered criticism.

I like hearing the comments about QUEEN both good and bad. As I'm getting twitchy waiting for Sleaze I feel like going to a hands in the air, anthem, queenie disco night, just for a change. Chances are I'll get along to QUEEN just to scratch that itch.

apologies for earlier comments about Lavish, criticism was in no way intended at this particular party but at continuation of mindless countdown postings, however recognise my wording was very careless and will be more careful and good luck to Lavish for offering another option this Saturday night.

I find slagging comments about events equally as boring really, as I find slavishly sycophantic comments made by social climbers and other assorted limpets. Lets face it- even our friends can organise stuff that doesn't work. I think some sort of explanation to the pinkboard audience (isn't that what we're on here for? to get some kind of polysyllabic review) is helpful.

I know this isn't a party, but it is fun and enjoyment!
A special offer to readers of Pinkboard - the first 10 people to respond via email to (removed) will receive a FREE double pass to "Blowing It" at The Studio 715pm Tuesday July 15.
BLOWING IT follows the story of an undercover cop who goes seriously off the rails. Mike Fahey, police constable, penetrates the pub world of petrolheads, perverts and pitbulls…and loses the plot! Award winning actor Stephen Papps (The End of the Golden Weather) takes us on a journey into the Queens arms, Panmure Auckland, where it all goes down: sex, drugs and violence.
Mike goes under, Cheryl goes down, Anal is fingered… and Satan the rottweiler gets CPR!
“The laughs come and thick and fast … It’s a remarkable performance.” - NZ Listener, 9 September 2000.
BLOWING IT is directed and co-written by one of New Zealand’s most successful writers Stephen Sinclair, whose credits include the international hit stage comedy Ladies Night, and the film of 2003: The Two Towers.
“…(a) brilliant script … Stephen Papps is one hell of an actor” Adelaide Advertiser
“Blowing It is a shining example of its kind of theatre … An outstanding performance by Stephen (Papps). A must see.”
dB Magazine, Adelaide
Please ensure that you include a return email address so that confirmation of your tickets can be sent to you. It's a great show ... even the press quotes above don't do it justice.

You people are fast! The first 5 double passes are already gone ... 5 to go for "Blowing It" so hurry!
Okay, here's another 10 FREE double passes to another show THIS SATURDAY July 12th at 9pm. Please email me at (removed) and include an email address so that I can confirm your tickets. This is a very funny show, here's the blurby bits:
THE LOST CITY OF ARGOS
The 4 Noels
The 4 Noels, armed with only pith helmets and a can of Raid set out to find an ancient city hidden in a treacherous jungle and bring you back an action adventure of ridiculous proportions.
According to legend the Lost City of Argos hides a power concealed from man for a very very long, long time. In a world at war, two powerful nations race to find Argos and capture this mythical force that could change the course of history.
The Lost City of Argos is a study in human obsession and absolutely blind ‘What are you doing? Are you mad? Stop poking that snake with a stick!’ sort of courage.
A journey into the deepest darkest reaches of the jungle where the call of the unknown screams out to be known. Will they find the city or will they go mad and eat their legs off? Many have tried, none have returned … probably because they ate their own legs.
It¹s Raiders of the Lost Ark meets Apocalypse Now meets Carry on up the Kyber, an action adventure not to be missed.
"Stunning. Not a dud moment” The Age
“They can sing sweetly, grind out rap AND they mime like Marcel Marceau on amphetamines” The Herald Sun
Craig - The Studio at Sydney Opera House - Fri 11 Jul 2003 12:44:59
And now for a different kind of cock sucking... MACHINE GUN FELLATIO'S starlet CHRISTA HUGHES will be the headline show at Hellfire next FRIDAY 18TH JULY, 2003. (WARNING THIS SHOW MAY ALSO CONTAIN SADOMASOCHISTIC IMAGERY AND IS NOT SUITABLE FOR THE FAINT HEARTED!)
So dust off your PVC hotpants, or your leather chaps for a discount at the door.
DJs MANDY ROLLINS, LANNY K and MISS YETTI will provide the twisted soundtrack for the best fetish night in Sydney.
See you there!

I am surprised to see so much sexism in the gay community. A person is a person, regardless of sex. Why can't gay men and women coexist - why can't straights and gays coexist - why can't we all coexist happily. And to be worried about having the word 'lesbian' in front of 'gay' just goes to show the level of insecurity in some people. Big deal - get over it.
- Fri 11 Jul 2003 14:23:25
not particularly insecure, feeling threatened etc but BB promotes celebrity for its own sake and therefore constantly promotes a band of talentless non-entities, can we now have a BB (Big Brother not Barebacking) debate

Sleaze ball - I've been sworn to secrecy by someone in the know. The DJ line-up for this party is fantastic. In the middle of the night I'm going to be running between the halls!!! Most of the big names and some who are newer on the scene. And some unknowns (to me anyway).

Hellfire NHB... Is it really NHB? are there any fetishes ruled out...? They say it's not for the faint hearted (well here's hoping) I haven't been to a NHB before. It sounds the most sane thing I've heard in ages after InqIX last month. Can it be that there is infact a party where you don't have to worry about straights, or anyone for that matter, verbalising you for your devious thoughts and acting out your fetish? (I know Hellfire is significantly straight but we know that they are there for the same reason you are). Where is it normally held? Oh yeah...! Why is it the last...?

Xane, NHB is one of the last truly underground events in sydney. You won't have to worry about people hassling you for your fetish. Most of the people at NHB (I've been to two) would, I'd guess, know each other from various bdsm scenes and many of those people are regulars at Hellfire. Hellfire is a pan scene really- not a het scene. NHB aims to attract pan players (not just queer ones) who respect all genders and sexualities etc. NHB ain't a queer party- and it doesn't need to be. It's one of the hottest events on the fetish circuit in general.
- Sat 12 Jul 2003 23:38:38
Well I know I'll be more attentive to this list in future. I went to Lavish - but as you might guess by the time of this comment - it was not the party I was hoping for. Why? Inject some sex - not even just the fucking discussed ad nauseum on this list was missing - where's the sexy atmosphere? Bring on Hellfire my leathers are barely dirty!

So how was Lavash? Did it live up to the hyping on this board? Was it good value? Were there many people?
- Sun 13 Jul 2003 13:35:12
Tickets to NHB are allocated according to a formula that is calculated to keep it truly pansexual. For example, out of the 140 tickets being sold, an upper limit only 42 tickets are available for heterosexual men. This ensures that straight boys are kept well and truly in the minority, especially as most of those 42 will be with their female partners. When no one group dominates a party, then everyone can run riot. When nobody fits in, then everybody fits in.
Interested people should email octopussy00@ozemail.com.au if they wish to find out more.
Cheers
Craig aka Master Tom - The Last No Holes Barred - Sun 13 Jul 2003 13:43:23
Hi Xane,
The party is at a former swingers club very close to Icebox. For further info about how great this venue is in terms of features, see our information, kindly put into website form by Sydney's Own Kink MagEzine - SCREAMZTEAM at: http://www.screamzteam.com/html/no_holes_barred.html
Why is it the last? Well the venue has been sold, so we will be looking for a new home where we can still do all the things we want to do without censorship. Also we believe in evolving and developing and perhaps we will create a "post-fetish" party in an entirely new space to wow your leather jocks off some time in the near future.
The previous answer really summed up NHB better than I could... all I can say is whoever you are, I hope you're coming to this NHB. Hellfire has come a long way from being 'predominantly straight' - whilst we're not a 'gay night' I like to think that we create a 'beyond sexuality' kind of environment in our new 'by the scene and for the scene' formate.
Stick your head in Xane, you might be pleasantly surprised. Our nextnight is Friday 18th July @ The Icebox.
Kinky thoughts,

Why all this crap about smoking etc, whats the big deal? why try to shove our opinions and ideas of not smoking down the throats of smokers? they wont listen, they do what they want and dont give a damn what others think, after all its a free country. All gay pubs wont go smoke free, because the majority of patrons smoke and if they made the pubs/nightclubs smoke free then they would lose a lot of thier patrons and therefore close down the pubs/niteclubs. Its best to leave them alone, i dont smoke but i choose to go to pubs and niteclubs where nearly everyone smokes, it doesnt bother me at all, because there is more chance of being hit by a car or bus, shot, stabbed by those weirdos who now frequent oxford st, so best to make the most of life instead of whining on about smoking etc, it sounds like aussies are starting to be a nation of whiners. That we do not need here, thankyou.I suggest to those who whinge about smoking, to go and get a life and enjoy yourself as much as you can in the positive way.

Ivan, You are a fool.
Non smoking in clubs has become law and will be enforced by the State dept of health. Smokers will have to abide by the regulations because clubs will be fined if they dont cut smoking out of their establishments.
The days of smoke filled rooms are slowly coming to an end. GET USED TO IT !!

apparently jame from bb was at arq on saturday night....which is kinda ironic.....get it, a "waste of space" in a "vacum" (and yes, i am aware that a vacum is the complete absence of space for any of the pinkboard readers posessing a PhD in particle physics)
perhaps if he danced really badly that would be a reason for not liking him.....

Re Lavish- I thought it was a great party. We got there pretty late at 2.30am but it was still packed out. It has that "all of sydney fetishists- who ARE these people?" kind of feel about it, and I love that. It's so good to know there are so many hundreds of sydney fetish people who come out to play. It gives comfort to those of us who see the scene not as an exclusive club, but as an opportunity to go out and enjoy oneself with others of a similar mindset and dress sense ;)
And thanks Sam for being such a lovely host. Amongst all those people, you were still so friendly and warm. We all love a good host!

I don't know to what you're referring- Lavish or NHB? I don't go to queer only venues as I'm not a separatist. I don't believe Lavish was queer only.

As a non-smoker I think it's good that the regulations are getting tougher, hopefully causing more people to reconsider there (IMHO) disgusting habit.
Note: some house fires start by smokers falling asleep with an unattended lit cigarette.

I actually remember as a child when it was quite the norm to smoke in a cinema. Now that is totally unheard of. In ten years time the same will be said about pubs, clubs, restaurants etc. The writing is on the wall so you smokers and venue operators just have to get get with the program.
What will really change the attitude of venue operators and the quick adoption of complete non-smoking public premises is when there is a raft of successful litigation by staff for passive smoking against the insurers of these venues under OH&S guidelines. $ speaks louder than words.

*Anyhow... have a tumour - Tue 15 Jul 2003 14:28:29 It would be interesting to know what proportion of venue staff smoke; nicotine or other substances. I suspect, a lot. But smoking is definitely on the way out, so's alcohol, though that will take longer. The healthcare liability in respect of booze is higher than that which smoking engenders. We'll just be left doing currently illicit substances. It's a funny old world really.

Ultra & Craig Thanks for your responses... I like the "Beyond Sexuality/ Pan Sexuality" concept. While I still identify as gay I think I've transcended vanilla and sexuality itself and am beginning to reach sexual actualisation (Apologies to Dr Maslow for the theft and rape of his theory)and there's no turning back. NHB is calling me. Thanks for the good work you guys/grrls and Hellfire are doing. I hope to get a chance at a ticket.

you complain about smoking etc, why bother going to pubs/niteclubs? Its best for you to stay at home and watch TV where there is no smoke, i dont want to get used to the pubs/niteclubs being smokefree and i dont ever see it happening here, even thought they may make laws about it, they still wont give a damn, after all profits comes first than health, get used to it my dear!!!

Fireman Sam re: the gay agenda.
I actually found it quite amusing....though it seemed to have a surprisingly american bent given it came from an autralian author (i think). Though it unnecessarily perpetuates both gay and lesbian stereotypes, i think it only does this as a humourous counter-point to the equally stereotypical (and wrong) views being pushed by the far-right or neo-conservatives who believe that sexuality is a matter of choice. As a retort to that, ie, the gay agenda, i actually found it to be quite powerful - highlighting, just how ridiculous the assertion that sexuality is merely "chosen" really is.
More interesting, why was a fireman looking for cascading style sheets?

Now back to music.
I really enjoyed ToyBox. Although I was mainly in the main room reaching for the lasers while the music was taking me higher and higher (eg. Silence - Delerium - Airscape Mix) I think the 2 musical style rooms were needed and used to great effect. I've been to a few Ruby parties and I really enjoy the music there, uplifting trance without getting too cheesy. But some female friends have complained that since it is only one style there and downstairs isn't too female friendly on a Saturday night they won't be able to enoy the night as much they want to or as much as I will. So it would be great if there was another ToyBox party in September or something simular. Maybe at the City Hotel (has 2 rooms, supposedly holds 1200 people) or another venue.
Now Sleaze Ball is on in October and there is rumours that we can't use the Horden, but nothing is booked then!
http://www.hordernpavilion.com.au/llweb/playbill/playbillvenues.nsf/vWebCalendarEntriesByDate?OpenView&count=9999&title_bc=Events|&title_pa=Calendar|
And Sleaze Ball only works if is has multiple rooms/music styles. A Large multi-room venue needs to be found, and soon! The logistics of putting it on, with the lights, sounds and 'performances' take a few months to sort out. The community needs worthwhile(sp?) suggestions.

Just wanted to take the opportunity to say Peter Farris ROCKED at Arq saturday before last. There was something for everybody, but especially for us trance-junkies. Enough of the monotonous tribal house/madonna/more tribal house/kylie/yet still more tribal house we're used to (and totally bored with) on Saturday nights...
Before you roll your eyes and start whingeing, yes, it's only my opinion and my taste, but a bit of variety never killed anybody.
(While I'm on the soap box... why do we HAVE to have sleaze at Fox studios? It's pretty obvious they only like us for our money, and we seem to be getting less and less goodwill in return.

A HUGE thankyou to the 350+ people who turned out at Lavish and made it absolutely excellent! yeeeeharrrrr.... the night absolutely rocked with the dance floor full tilt until 6am!! Nobody wanted to leave it seemed *grin* (i think we needed an afterparty) It was great to see so many different groups mixing together and enjoying themselves and the surroundings. The chillout bar was a real hit and the "piano-play" both musical and bdsm wise was a real treat, ain't never seen a baby-grand played like that before. heheh
Thanks to Mandy Rollins and guest dj JPJ... and the crew of around 20 people who worked on Lavish. The whole night was very sexy indeed and i've had heaps of positive feedback. Will let you know where pics and reviews will be online soon. And when the next Lavish is on.

I will spell out why men want a Men Only space: With men there is a definite link between dancing, eroticism & sensuality. Last Leather Pride proved that. Gay men do not feel erotic or sensual when there are women around - the reason is that we are Homosexual. Get it - we are fags.

Church votes for gay priests
July 17 2003
After two days of heated debate, the Uniting Church today voted to allow practising homosexuals to be ordained as priests.
A conservative group within the church had warned it faced a mass exodus if the vote favoured ordaining homosexual priests.
The vote at the church's national assembly in Melbourne effectively allows individual presbyteries to decide ordinations on a case-by-case base.
Discussion was adjourned yesterday after an impassioned debate failed to end in consensus.
The Uniting Church, which was formed in 1977 by a merger of the Presbyterian, Methodist and Congregational churches, will now become the first mainstream Australian church to allow the ordination of practising homosexuals.

No fear of that my friend.... i worked on club dv8 and they still owe me money too!! grrrrr. (i assume that's what you mean)? We have PAID all our dj's and all the staff who worked for a fee. A lot of friends helped us out for free, since we had such a slim budget for our first event and no idea whether it would be a success or not. Without their generosity i would be dead now from overload! having said that, i am still recovering from exhaustion, but it's hard to ignore the hords of people already yelling: when's the next Lavish? ... with feedback like this, who can rest? hehehe

Dear self appointed pinkboard monitor/sheriff/judge and jury. If it's a party issue it's valid here on this board. So what, it's been done to death, it's good to see pb newbies and olbies come on and express their opinions and beliefs and debate the pros and cons. Take a moment to think of the alternatives... a batch of homogenised comments all agreeing on a narrow set of principles. No stimulation, no critique, no debate, no life... and you mention consensus, who wants f****ng consensus. BORING...!!! Kum-bay-ah and all that. Phooey. Seems that the Shift Club's sunday nite, 'Spunk' has failed and been axed. This is the second time the Shift has launched a Sunday nite in hopes of pulling in the crowds. I wonder if they will try and launch the nite again soon or do they feel Arq is always going to be the Sunday ruler?

I think the Shift would be happy that they now have 2 busy nights upstairs on Fridays and Saturdays.
The fact that Sunday hasnt worked isnt really a big deal anymore in my opinion.
As long as its packed on Fri & Sat then they can do without Sunday.
I mean lets face it, Arq survives basically on the back of 2 nights that being Saturday & Sundays, and Arq doesnt have the roaring trade that the Shift has downstairs !!!
.
blah - Thu 17 Jul 2003 19:52:30
Disagree with you Xane - whilst this board is open to all discussion, the poster you responded to was only pointing out that nothing will come of argueing about sex spaces here. Even if 100% of all Pinkboard posters vote for a sex space you still wont get it. You're just flogging a dead horse.
Unless posters are prepared to approach the proper authorities to have the law changed then there is nothing that can be done/posted/argued over. Of course the look on the authorities face when you tell them what law you want changed would be a classic ! Would be a huge shame to waste all that energy when there are so many other things which are not equal yet.
It may be an old line but Dance Parties are for dancing and Sex Venues are for Sex.
Just imagining the look on their face has me laughing - Thu 17 Jul 2003 20:59:15
maybe Spunk failed coz it tried to capture the oversaturated trance cheese market ? if they were brave enough to try something fresh, they might stand a chance.
deep - Thu 17 Jul 2003 21:07:43
The law isn't really the point. The law was happily ignored for years in Sydney - and is to this day in Melbourne. What's changed in Sydney is the application of the law. Whether this stemmed mostly from Fox or the Police I don't know. In theory, if the law was ignored once, it can be ignored again.
Paul Diamondo - Thu 17 Jul 2003 22:32:08
Pete and blah, Arq offers the best Sunday morning & Monday morning for my money. Mainly due to the nice talented DJ's along with a good fun crowd (of trashbags? Great - we need more of 'em!)
Since rediscovering the refurbished Shift with their diverse bunch of DJ's, you can't lose either. They have wooed me back, even Wednesday's are "picking-up".
But why bother with the Shift vs. Arq debate when you can "do" both? - Thu 17 Jul 2003 22:45:19
and of course the logical conclusion is....the Shift upstairs needs to do an Eighties night on Sundays.
Howard Jones, Nic Kershaw, Shiela E, Bananarama, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Prince and the New Generation, Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Erasure, Shakespears Sister, Mel and Kim, Til Tuesday, Irene Cara, Wa Wa Nee, Pseudo Echo, KIDS IN THE KITCHEN, oh yeah baby!
couldn't possibly draw any less numbers than they are now. Heck, I'll bring out some of my scratched up ol vinyl and be the DJ (just if somebody could explainthat BPM thing to me....)

I'm imagining that you must be really young - or straight. If you'd been an adult g&l person living in Sydney for the last 5/10/15 years, you'd be well aware that sex at gay dance parties has been a continuing part of our culture.
It's not something people want to introduce, it's something they've always had.
We're all aware of the law. The practice has long been different.
- Fri 18 Jul 2003 08:35:24
Ms Golightly - Thu 17 Jul 2003 23:46:12
You tap your foot to the beat of the song for 60 seconds. you count how many times you tap your foot in 60 seconds. That "count" is the BPM (Beats per minute) of the song.
Its not rocket science !!
The concept is to manipulate tracks of a similar BPM together by shifting their pitch on the turntable or cd player. In your mix of tunes you go from one track to the next so that the crowd doesnt experience a sudden change of tempo from one song to the next. You slowly over a period of time can work your way up or down in bpm.
One can start on a bpm of say 120bpm and within the space of 5 or 6 songs have worked your way up to 130bpm. In this day and age where most punters are on amphetimines songs with low bpm under 120bpm are not welcome. In fact there is almost NO dance music out there currently that falls below the 120bpm mark.
Most house music is 120-130bpm these days
Most Tribal Dance is 125-135bpm these days
Most Pop dance & Trance music is 130-140bpm
Some Hard House / Banging music is 140 - 150bpm
Some hard core techno can be 150+ (but this is not common)
Being subtle is an art and a skill that alot of DJ's dont possess these days. The crowd dont appreciate being sledge hammered from one bpm range to another from one song to the next. It breaks up the flow which can be most annoying in my experience.
There you have it. Your first DJ lesson. Please remit your cheque or money order for $99.95. You are now ready to play !! :P

Ms Golightly you are the most fun person on Pinkboard, and I think your 80s night idea for the Shift is a blast. Can I bring the Thompson Twins with me??

can you pls explain how come a high majority of patrons at various clubs and pubs are smokers??? what does that explain??? I know because i have been to many pubs and clubs and noticed everyone around me always lights up, i know once they are smokefree, all the patrons will disappear and therefore so will the pubs and niteclubs, it will be very interesting to see what the outrage will be like when they ban alcohol from clubs and pubs...hmmm...cant wait, as i loathe people who drink too much as they make huge fools of them selves as well as the druggies, they are pains in the arse with thier flapping arms and hands around and knocking my soft drink out of my hand...and they sure dont look a pretty sight!!!

No I'm not straight nor young and as for the parties have been going to them
for close on 20 years and you're right that sex has been happening since way back then.
The difference though is the dedicated sex space. This puts it in the authorities face/made them aware of what was going to happen so what else could they do ?
Some posters seem to confuse having sex at a party to having a sex space.
No-one has posted ( that I have read ) saying you cant have sex. What the argument is over is the dedicated sex space.
You just cannot by the current laws set up a dedicated sex space.
You're advertising the fact and the party promoters risk prosecution and we risk the venue owners banning us.
Just dont advertise the fact - Fri 18 Jul 2003 18:32:59
I don't find the conflation of "fetish" and "leather" particularly confronting. And I like to hang with anyone no matter what their proclivity.

Just dont advertise the fact - Fri 18 Jul 2003 18:32:59 Dedicated sex spaces, supported by ACON, have been happening for years. Not one party has ever had an "advertised" sex space but they have all - up until the Gay Games been conducted with the discreet and tacit approval of organiser/licensee/Police Gay and Lesbian liaison officers. Black during the Games was exactly what you seem to want: a bunch of guys doing their own thing - and it was a disaster. Two guys might be able to be discreet if left to their own devices. 2,500 won't be.
- Sat 19 Jul 2003 08:58:25
Ms Golightly - See look at the positive response you have received from your 80's night idea. Some people on this board obviously think it is real and actually happening... so you can't let them down now.
Pete - Sat 19 Jul 2003 10:00:06
I've had a few FABULOUS 80's nights at the shift. Trouble is, they were about 20 years ago.
It would work well if it was mixed in the style that Paul Goodyear does (mixing in the old with the new).
80's stuff? Small doses, please.

Unfortunately all sex on licensed venues is illegal. If the licensee knows about it then they must do something about it.

I remember in August 1992 & August 1993 how the Bacchanalia dance party group held a party titled "Step Back In Time" & "Step Back In Time 2".
The party was about playing music from the past and was mostly 80's music with about 25% being the current music of the era.
The 1992 party was held at the much loved Alexandria Basketball Stadium. It was an outstanding evening even though the night itself was a shocker having terrential rain fall all night.
The 1993 Step Back occurred at somewhere that was called the Alexandria Sports Stadium which from my recollection was somewhere near where Green Square Railway Station now is.
The 1993 party was equally as good as 1992 but it didnt sell out like the 1992 party (partly due to peoples uncertainty about a venus that had never been used before, and was never used again).
Two of the 3 DJ's who played the 1993 event are still currently working on the gay scene today.
Many of the people who I socilaised with it that early 90's era have endless stories about the good times that were had at that those 2 parties. Anybody else care to share stories about these wonderful times ?
Oh dear I'm reminising again.....
Anyway, Back in 2003 theres no reason at all why a 80's / 90's night at a place like the Shift wouldnt be a huge success. Shit, Let me DJ it - Ive got so much unused vinyl from the last 20 years that I could play till Christmas time non stop without having to repeat a song :)
Comparing the scene 1992-3 to 2003 makes me sigh in dispair. How tragic night clubbing is compared to that wonderful era. Oops I'm dwelling again.... time to get lunch, Bi Bi !!
Dreamer - Sat 19 Jul 2003 12:14:23
In the interests of research Ms Golightly and friends downed some champagne cocktails before heading to the Shift last night (btw: what is it with gay men, podiums, and lip synching? [and why wouldn't they move over and let Ms Golightly have a turn?]).
Anyhow, the Shift really has made Friday night work - happy crowd, happy tunes (kinda like a classy palms really)....so I think an eigthies/retro/pure pop night could work quite well on a sunday....maybe not every sunday, but say one sunday a month.
And a Saturday night blessing to you all. "Everybody have fun tonight, Everybody Wang Chung tonight!"

In theory, if the law was ignored once, it can be ignored again.
Paul Diamondo - Thu 17 Jul 2003 22:32:08
Nice theory. have you noticed that we have a government who would like nothing better than to have mum, dad and 1.2 kids and the picket fence, all the boys are in the army and gay people simply don't exist. It started with Olympics clean up and the Carr government have just kept it going. Ignore the law at your own peril, but don't put the rest of us in jeopardy while you're at it.

Separatist 03 - Thu 17 Jul 2003 12:06:45 I don't think it's 'separatist' to want to express your sexuality in the way you want to - and with who you want to. Don't buy in to the PC 'pansexual' agenda.

You may have had a good time at Black Party Xane, but that was the beginning of the end but lets all stop right here as its a merry go round ride and will never be solved here.
Hey Dreamer - sure do remember all those parties at Alexandria - great venue.
When you travel overseas you see amazing clubs that have surpassed Sydney.
We just dont seem to have the venues like them. Ours are renovated shops or a couple shops meshed together. We need old community halls/old cinemas/old churches etc to be converted but any old building nowadays is pulled down and apartments put up. Shame where Home is. What is the Metro Theatre used for up at the Cross ? saw it today and thought what a great venue it could be. Even better would be that Church opposite St Vincents and spooky looking as well.
Kinselas could be great if all gay - bar/toilets downstairs, upstairs just all dance floor ! but I'm dreaming as well.
Alexandria Sports Stadium got so hot that the condensation dripped all over but fortunately it got everyone so all looked bad ! There was that great warehouse party in Glebe in old wine building with showers ! Hideous NYE party
at some warehouse over Glebe way as well - had a tank in it but was an oven.
But my all time fave is the Hordern - only wish the old bleachers were in there, followed by 2nd fave Alexandria Basketball Stadium. Both were great for
sound and being able to sit in high up bleachers looking down on the dance floor, even waving to your friends ..........sigh.
Will it ever be the same ? will we catch up with the rest of the world ?
Just dreaming as well - Sat 19 Jul 2003 21:12:16
Xane- Sat 19 Jul 2003 18:44:09 Well not if you were a guy doing your own thing Xane, indeed not. But it sure was a disaster as far as the Event Manager was concerned - not to mention a disaster for Pride whose NYE Party had it's sex space closed down as a direct flow-on result. If the organisers of the GG Black Party had put a bit of forethought and planning in, things could have been very different - and you'd still be happy ;)

We are anything from bent to straight. We are all pretty smart. We are in many industries. We all usually know how to show sincere respect. Some are poor and some very weathly.
... and MOSTY of us meet and/or pass eachother in clubs, pubs and bars and never really know who is who on pinkboard!

Hey Maddox Streetwise - was only knocking our venues.
Agree 100% about our DJ's, they are awesome. Just dreaming of Brent Nicholls last set he played in the Hordern, Rachel Auburns set in the Hordern.
Hated Siouxe Spears set the year before in the Hordern but her version of
hardhouse in City Live at last NYE as unbeleivably fantastic and I posted saying so and depending on I suppose their moods, I like Luke Leal and Alex
Taylor but its weird how some DJ's play different to the big parties to what they play in a club.
As you can see I'm into the hardhouse/trance scene.

"Just can't wait for Sleaze", I know you weren't knocking them..."its weird how some DJ's play different to the big parties to what they play in a club"
I think this is due to set placement, how they feel on the night (can't always be UP, I suppose) and someone as humble as Alex sometimes doesn't always want to steal kudos from his fellow DJ's, that's my guess!

To be honest, I don't care about the event manager/s. If they can't manage the event it's their problem. Like... I did my bit by coughing up $110, I expect the organisers to deliver. In the case of Black, I believe they delivered to the patrons, from my point of view, nothing else matters. Call me selfish. I know a lot of the people are volunteers and I sure appreciate their effort in making these big parties work, but the fact remains the organisers take your money up front... they must assume responsibility. My 110 bucks give me the right to through Brickbats and bouquets, and I always will.

No booze at Sleaze in favour of a sex space - my vote would be NO.
They now have Kens that gives them dancing and sex.
My personal view point is - Sleaze attracts anywhere from what 13,000 and up ?
and just how many frequent the sex space ? I've checked the spaces out and never more than 30-50 guys in it at one time. Sometimes only about 10. So even if they were replaced every 1/2 hour by a new group its still a minority.
So I'll get howled down by some people. Like someone else said , its a dance party. If you want sex go to a cubicle like people have been doing for years.
My vote is no - Mon 21 Jul 2003 19:14:29
Have a shuttle service to Ken's during Sleaze and back is better than everyone popping out to get a drink.
- Mon 21 Jul 2003 21:13:54
Anyone have any idea why there are no women-only sex venues similar to Ken's etc.? There was a story in Lotl recently about women who pay for sex... but there were only two places in Sydney, one was in Parramatta (yawn) and the other's rates started at $180 per visit to a B&D parlour... the third was a high class professional in Brisbane (big help)not. I think the REAL story is that there isn't anywhere to go!
What's the deal? Don't the women in this town get horny? I know i'd love somewhere to go and i'm totally envious of the services on offer for you boys!
Any ideas? Does anyone think there's a market for it?
FemmePolySlut - Tue 22 Jul 2003 02:06:28
FemmePolySlut - Tue 22 Jul 2003 02:06:28 - Same reason that women only bars tend to go broke after a few months. not enough people to keep business running. and it's even worse for sex venues.
a couple of years back Ken's used to do a women's only night during Mardi Gras and all the women who turned up just sat around the pool throwing the beach ball around and laughing their heads off!
- Tue 22 Jul 2003 09:21:13
FemmePolySlut - Tue 22 Jul 2003 02:06:28 The conventional wisdom is that indulging in heaps of multipartner sex isn't a major dyke preoccupation - certainly nowhere near the extent to which it is among gay men. This translates
into a market reality where no-one is going to provide a service that won't get continuing custom.
Ken's used to run a women-only night in the run-up to Mardi Gras but it was always written up by lesbian commentators as kind of about couples just floating round in the pool together. Kind of sweet but not really the idea ;)
Maybe you should initiate a debate about it in LOTL?

""Alcohol
How about an alcohol free Sleaze Ball (gets around the problems with having a sex space?)""
Feedback above might usefully be channeled through the NMG website. Inputis also sought on a whole range of issues pertaining to sleaze including date, entertanment, venue (significance of Fox Studios)etc
- Tue 22 Jul 2003 09:48:08
Tue 22 Jul 2003 09:21:13 - I attended the Girls on the Wet Side events at Ken's and the problem wasn't so much about women using the event as a place to socialise (as opposed to having sex) - the problem was that the standard of women was so low. No matter how horny you are, there has to be some good looking women at these types of events. Let's face it, the lesbian community when compared to the gay community, isn't that attractive or sexy. I know this is a generalisation, but the standard of women at these events is really poor.

So tell me (as I didnt attend Black) , was there a designated sex space similiar to Sleaze ball and Pride where they created that corridor in the Hordern ?
- Tue 22 Jul 2003 14:19:55
What is wrong with saying the women were of a poor standard? The sentiment was echoed by other lesbians at these events, not just me. My point was that the gay community has goodlooking, fit and toned men meanwhile the gay female equivalent are overweight and not that attractive. I'm not saying ALL gay women are overweight and unattractive, just the greater number of women who attended these events at Kens. Perhaps some of the Melbourne girls could come up to Sydney if we have another girls sauna night.

As an out-of-towner (used to live in NSW)a few thoughts on sleaze past and present. I guess its human nature to only remember the good things about the past. I really enjoyed the sleaze balls when they were sleazy. I don't mean that I go to the party just to have sex but sex on the dance floor or around the place is such a gay thing to do. Yes there were fewer "straights" around and I don't know why the bother with "our" parties ... can't they have good ones of their own? They don't bother me unless there are heaps of them ... like Pride New Year parties. Could we give the DJ's a go. they will never please everyone. If there was Handbag/Commercial house in Hordy, House/garage in RHI and trance etc in the Dome (like it generally is) wouldn't that please nearly everyone? If there is music that I don't like in a certain hall i go to another. simple really! I hope to enjoy this year's ball. A lot depends on the recreational pharmacists. Last MG everyone was off their dials but the E's were not of the "huggie" variety. Few people said "happy MG" and ver little touchy feelies on the dance floor. Bottom line ... If your medicine is good then so is the party. Vice versa. P.S. Brisbane has a Sleaze ball in November. Hardly any straights go to Brisbane parties because we are undiscovered (or disliked?)
There is nothing worse than being a pretentious wanker over dance music. It's meant to be fun. Remember!
Brissy Boy - Tue 22 Jul 2003 14:56:28
ooo, sounds like someone didn't pick up at the ladies sauna night. I know I did, along with the other people in the sling room, the group grope in the spa, the (very vocal)shennanigans in the cubicals, and the live action in the video room and the steam room. It's a damn shame these nights are no more. Commenting on the supposed "poor quality" of the talent attending is hardly a way to encourage people to go. You bring your own energy and enthusiasm to these events, and surprisingly you'll have a much better time. OK, so there was a butch splashing match in the pool, but it was bloody funny. Maybe you can bring along all your "good looking" mates next time it's on so that you'll have someone to er, "chat" with.
Women in Sydney don't have a dedicated sex space so aren't used to the procedures for picking up casual sex at a venue. Maybe there isn't the cultural background for it, I dunno. I do know that I would really appreciate having somewhere like Ken's or Headquarters to drag a hot girly back to, or to cruise around in. It also means that Big Gay Dance Parties are the closest thing a lot of women get to, to having a cruising sexy venue. Crikey, we're not immune to feeling at sexy at these parties! The boys aren't the only ones retreating to the loos for a bit of recreation!

All the shift play on Sundays is retro! They've done it for years now. Where you been Mrs Golighttly??? Unless youre already working there.....
mmmmm? - Mon 21 Jul 2003 12:10:20
Well excuse me - [Ms Golightly picks herself up off the floor] What a horrible thing to say! I fell off my chair when I read that outrageous post. No, not the bit about working at the shift....the hurtful part was that totally BASELESS and DEMEANING accusation that Ms Golightly was,......married (Ms Golightly spat that last word out). I ain't no "Mrs" sweetie, just ask my first husband!
Yes, downstairs does play retro, and i think Rodney Dean does a darn good job - why doesn't the shift just pop him upstairs on a Sunday - video screens and all? And just so the cynical readers of Pinkboard don't think I'm blatantly promoting the Shift - Peter Fam (i think - kinda orright looking) played a great set upstairs at the Colombian on Sunday evening (fantastic remix of "here comes the rain again" by the Eurythmics)and the overall set had a very 80's feel to it.
Anyhow, to all those who think an 80's night won't work, i just have 5 words......."Kim Wilde Kids In America".
and Mr Panther, can you please ensure that such outrageous and hurtful generalisations don't slip through again. ta ta for now

I believe a club called Ken's is good on a Sunday night. What's the music like there?

>>So tell me (as I didnt attend Black) , was there a designated sex space similiar to Sleaze ball and Pride where they created that corridor in the Hordern ?<<
Um... Not sure how to best answer this, to say the entire Fox complex was the designated sex space is probably an exaggeration... but not far off it. Given it was a Men only event, men being the pigs that they are just did it where ever, when ever, how ever and generally with an audiance... Oink...!

PS. Any reports on the Women's only party at the gaymes...? Was it hot and oinky...?

Women in Sydney don't have a dedicated sex space so aren't used to the procedures for picking up casual sex at a venue. I don't think it's procedures, aint it just eye contact and chemistry. I was suprised to see when I was in Denver a few years back dykes cruising in a park beat. You don't necessarily need a venue. There is a very active beat culture in Sydney (and around the world), not just public toilets but parks, beaches etc. "If you build it they will come" Have you ever wondered why there are so many cars parked at Foreshore Drive or Deepwater...?

Kens is a male sauna in Kensington. Its not a nightclub. You cant get booze. Its a getlemans club. You can get laid. Sunday night is called "chill-pill". The music is best described as crossing the genres of sleazy dub/funk/chill/ambient/electronic/world and more. Its certainly not for dancing. Unless its horizontal dancing. There a health mix of blokes muscley/hairy/latino/blokey/ and everything in between. With all men jerking off on the net these days its good to see something being created in our venues. Its not everybodys cup of tea - but its rammed between 5 and 10 so someones getting off!

My vote is for a shuttle to Kens for Sleaze Ball - majority will be wanting to buy alcohol.
An Brissy Boy , I like the venues the way they have been in recent years ie
RHI with its handbag/commercial and Hordern with hardhouse/trance and Dome
with its Sleazy atmosphere and if there are $'s leftover the City Live has
been very popular with its latino type music or R & B whichever they prefer.

"Hot and oinky" parties. Yum yum.

Oh, so it's fine for the dykes to cruise outside and get hassled or worse? Please. Given a choice between a safe sex space with supplies, towels, music, a sauna, and a spa versus a stinky public toilet or hiding in the bushes, sorry, I'll take Ken's any day. But the thing is, we *have* no choice. Is it any wonder why that other poster boggled at the "quality" of the women she saw at the ladies night? Where else are dykes going to see hundreds of other dykes naked? Clothes hide a multitude of sins. We're just not used to having such a huge basis of comparison presented all in one go! Talk about performance anxiety! It's a wonder anyone get their gear off.

Which is a perfect explanation of why Fox pulled the plug on sex spaces after 15 years of having them.

OOPSsss!!! I think i opened a can of wormies there asking about women only sex venues in sydney. Some great responses (an education). I don't know why women are so shy about stepping up to that plate, maybe as one poster suggested: unfamiliarity? Sounds about right. (Practise girls, we need practise) Look it doesn't even have to be a damned sauna, i'd take anything that has some private spaces attached so if you do pick up and you don't feel the need to be an exhibitionist you don't have to. I haven't been to any of the events mentioned, so cannot comment (musssst get out more). Interestingly, every response mentioned addresses the issue as being for dykes and dykes only spaces etc. When i mentioned it originally i just said "women". I am not a dyke, so is it okay for bisexual women to be big poly sluts and cruise women only sex venues? (oops, no, no not another can of worms)??!!!

re: the dj lesson
learn to think outside the box. try anything you want. not all djs do or need to beat mix. sometimes the need for diversity in music comes ahead of linear set progressions. not one rule for all otherwise it would bite big time...
remember that this niche music fad only got started a few years ago...

Yea, open it, open it! Is it ok? Would like to think so but haven't personally tested the theory......

This statement is totally incorrect.
DJ's have been beat mixing slowly going up and down in bpm tempo since the inception of the 12" single in the late 1970's
I myself have been mixing this way ever since I was shown "how to do it" back in 1984.

Wed 23 Jul 2003 03:35:15 - ummmm I dont think so. beat mixing has been around since the late 70's. I can loan you some books on the subject if you need them

Hey,
As a promoter of pansexual play parties and clubs (No Holes Barred and Hellfire) the main problem for putting on a women's sex space/sauna night is (a) finding a venue and (b) getting a crowd that will CONTINUE to support you -everyone loves opening nights, but I personally having seen the fate of women's night after women's night, would be much more comfortable doing one-offs.
I would love to do a women's sauna night... just not on a WEDNESDAY (which is the only type of night the boys saunas are prepared to give up as they make a lot of money from boys on the other nights) and not without ALCOHOL... The alcohol I believe is necessary to allow women a little space to shed some inhibitions...
As much as I agree with Xane, that it is about chemistry, it is also about rituals and 'people knowing the rules'... As an example I'll tell you about the anonymous woman at Ken's who asked me in the sauna 'So what do you do?' My reply (which shocked her into a disgruntled exit) was 'Do you really want to know... aren't we just here for sex?' And why did my gal-pal and I get WRITTEN UP in LOTL for lying on the glass floor naked? Wasn't there anything sexier happening to report on? My raw knees from the sauna room seems to suggest that there was!!!
I think that cruising is an art form that gay men generally have had a lot more practice at than women, and it made the women's nights at Ken's fun but a bit stilted... and TG is totally right - some of the best public performance sex play between women I have seen at Hellfire and No Holes Barred (and elsewhere) has always come from bisexual women... so in my opinion, bring them on!!!
If it ever
