Pinkboard: Mardi Gras 97 Graffiti Wall

It almost time for Sydney's Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival again. Time for partying and going to plays and galleries and film. Time for frantically building floats and sewing costumes. Time for sequins, feather boas, leather and denim. Time to feel normal for a month while it is the rest of the world that is different for a change.

Time to celebrate our Pride in having the courage to be ourselves: lesbian, gay, transgender, bisexual, queer, unique.

Please leave your comments on events you have been to, places to meet, costume suggestions, rumours and gossip using the form at the bottom of the page.
My last Mardi Gras for a while. I sincerely hope that it's fabulous. London Pride here I come!
Partygrrl - Fri Dec 20 12:02:37 1996
THis year I have started on a float with some friends early so that for once I'll be able to go to more events. I'm planning on doing something more athletic this year other than dancing non stop for 10 hrs. I think I'll try cycling ... just for the lycra clad butts
cumrat - Sat Dec 21 22:29:14 1996
Yay - Xmas party season not yet over and already its time to start planning (budgeting) Mardi Gras festival attendance. (When will Sydney City Council wake up and realise that Mardi Gras is THE Sydney Festival !!) Parade and party wise we're going to be smarter this year and skip the party in favor of sleep then do the recoveries - unless MG is going to issue drugs along with the T- shirts to enable queens to be on their feet fron noon Sat to sunset Sunday !!
jimmib - Sun Dec 22 11:55:43 1996
What is all this about " Support from John Howard"? It is not necessary. Lets go ahead and celebrate ourselves.
Hills - Thu Dec 26 21:48:16 1996
Ive just arrived back from the country and read the new 97 Mardi Gras Guide. It is a 1000% improvement on last years effort. I reckon the people who put it all togethor deserve a pat on the back and the advertisers as well for creating the best guide I think I have ever seen in my 11 years of attending Mardi Gras Festivals and parties. Congratulations
Phillip Shipton - Fri Dec 27 13:47:55 1996
ok... been to the party once... so this year I'm going in the parade (probably) look for me in the redfern group one. I'll be the cute guy who'll still be trying to decide what to wear halfway down the street.
Aide - Sat Dec 28 15:41:00 1996
ok... I've been in the parade once... so this year I really should go to the party... =) I may even go in the parade again (with enough encouragement). Looking forward to it...! =) Hoping to finally catch up with Aide (I'll look for the half naked boy getting mixed up in the wrong float)...
BeLFrY - Sat Dec 28 17:06:09 1996
Oops... just realised that there will be millions of half naked boys getting mixed up in the wrong float... Myself included!
BeLFrY - Sat Dec 28 17:08:34 1996
I hate to get political boys and girls but the rumour mill tells me that the reason we haven't all recieved our tickets is that it is still not certain where the party is being held!. If that is the case than Bob Carr needs a quick and painful shafting! When are the powers-that-be going to realise that we are voters and what this festival is worth to the country. I'm going to have a valium and a lie down. See you all there ...I'll be the one looking glamorous and irresistable ( yeah right!)
Rob - Sat Dec 28 18:52:05 1996
A question ... Who exactly decides how many upper case letters are too many? Was it because I mentioned the word 'Rupert?' (He who will exclude us from the showgrounds). (An oblique reference to my soapboxing last un-internetted message). Folks, who wants to walk/march/disco all the way to Homebush?? Have a wonderful Mardi Gras, and we hope to see you when we ride again with the unbroadcast but very stylish Dykes on Bikes.
JR - Tue Dec 31 0:19:18 1996
We can't wait for the party and parade of the century!!!! It will be so good to catch up with old friends in a party atmosphere and with so many things on offer! (LMO) mmmmmmmm Happy Mardi Gras Everybody!!
david and donna - Tue Dec 31 8:34:39 1996
Rob: I would venture to guess that we will have it at Moore Park or in the vicinity whether Murdoch and Carr want it there or not. There are still a few of us here that are not averse to a small political demonstration, like our first Mardi Gras parade.
Panther - Tue Dec 31 9:22:57 1996

Scott, is it true you'll be in New York for Mardi Gras this year? Hope it's not because of the "remember to rehydrate" line in Capital Q. Yes, Scott,it was a bad pic. With pride.

Brothers and Sisters...just wondering if you have ever been to the Midsumma Festival down here in Melbourne. It is not as large as the Mardi Gras, but I suppose it is a smaller version of it. I have not been to Mardi Gras just yet, but hope to do so by the 21st century...that is year 2000 same year as the Olympics. We need more of these sort of festivities all year round to keep the rest of society on their toes...or whatever...good luck for all those who are involved with Mardi Gras 97' and make it a good one for all of us.

It looks like the 1997 Mardi Gras CD won't be out until at least mid February. The goss is that the new Board Members wanted to get their fave tracks onto the compilation and have held up the process. Poor Kate. What's a DJ goddess to do?
Partygrrl - Mon Jan 13 18:02:45 1997
AB FAB is back. And it looks like I'm just in the nick of time too. This board needs a bit of spice. Hi Red. Hi Trouble, I've just bought my tickets to your birthday party. Is it ok if I don't bring a present? Don't really have any pockets to put it in.

Sister Soul, Mister Beat and Krystal, Really, where do you get your information from? Hello ev1, How are we this year
Aslan - Tue Jan 14 15:08:37 1997
I wonder if all you people have forgotten Mardi Gras' origins? Sure, it's a time to party and have fun but all this emphasis on drugs for enjoyment is soooooo passe. I remember when I was 15 being in Sydney in the winter months and stumbling upon a rowdy street demo - Stonewall Day. Ok, maybe demos are also tres passe (thank goodness) but when I see comments from gays talking about its economic impact, I know we've lost the plot. Mardi Gras is not about money, it's about fagdom and our right to exist. By the way, could the ABC broadcast it this year as they've *ucked it up every year so far. I think I'll watch my toenails grow instead of the ABC broadcast this year. Compared to the ABC broadcast of the parade, the Eurovision Dong Dong contest is art. Have a lovely time girls and boys and a very safe Mardi Gras to you all.
Bitter Bitch - Wed Jan 15 1:10:12 1997
I meant could the ABC not broadcast it this year! Too much red wine. By the way, "Bent" is on in Brissy until the 25th Jan. Just went to it tonite.
Bitter Bitch - Wed Jan 15 1:13:48 1997
I haven't forgotten the origins. Even though I wasn't there I was at the demonstrations to get our sex legalised in NSW in 84/85. Yes folks, we've only been legally allowed to have sex in NSW for just over 10 years. I also remember the parade when we didn't need the barricades and you had to hunt through all the TV news' on Sunday to catch a glimpse of the parade.
Panther - Wed Jan 15 8:56:25 1997

Well, I remember the StoneWall march when it was bitterly cold in mid-winter and we needed a hip-flask handy to keep our spirits up! Mardi Gras has grown up since then but it *is* about being who we truly are in spite of the world outside - we were *protesting* the straight world then. Joe of Tokyo, wear a good body and not much else - it is summer here! I've heard this Donna Summer rumour before it seems, but I would happily pay to see Kim or RuPaul. See you all there, high and mighty! Have a lot of fun. Tip: to see the parade, stand on *two* milk crates - they are quite safe - tested and tried last year.

What is the point of Mardi Gras babbling on about how this year the festival moves into Cyberspace when their homepage at http://www.geko.net.au/~mardigras/ is twelve months out of date. If you want to know what's on you must use the hardcopy of the festival guide!! You might as well watch re-runs of lost in space as try and plan what you will go to THIS YEAR using their site! Hi kids, great to see you all back and bitching again. Howdy to my cyber buddies no-good, ab-fab, panther and red. Hope you're all well. Now watch me bitch! Mardi Gras........ hmmmm. Does anyone see whats going on here? Bev Lange, what are you doing girl? Channel Ten? The worst DJ line up at a party ever (that has just about everyone I know wanting to cash in their tickets)? An organisation that is getting rid of its male staff in favour of female ones, and marginalising male groups such as Leather Pride? A festival that reaks of autocracy and limited vision? And now to top it all off, they've thrown out gay sydney's oldest mardi tradition - the marching boys. All I can say is, if the marching boys go, then the marching girls have gotta go too! I'm not going, because all mardi gras is about nowadays is $ Besides, it's much too straight anyway.
Trouble - Sat Jan 25 18:49:10 1997
Oh stop your bitching...Just have a good time and let the gay/lesbian/trany/bi/straight pollies do their work.
Stop Bitching !!!! - Sat Jan 25 21:15:42 1997
Has anyone noticed over the last few years how many other groups have done marching boys? Mardi Gras doesn't need to do a marching group of boys. There will probably be heaps of other ones. They are going to do something new and different. Isn't that what they should do? I don't want to see the same parade year after year. Hasn't any one actually read the ads in the papers? They have asked for submissions for something different. I think they have made the right decision.
Gregsta - Sun Jan 26 11:01:09 1997
On this topic of marching boys again:
They are *not* the oldest Mardi Gras tradition. Political satire, for instance, is a much older tradition. Mardi Gras' own marching boys have been marching for only about 5 or 6 years.

In case you have forgotten this is the 20th Mardi Gras parade. Remember Fred's head (89)? Remember Imelda's shoes(87)? Do you remember when the parade started from the Domain? Sydney Square (till 85?)? I don't remember much before that because I wasn't out.

Also: There *will* be marching boys groups. Just not ones organised by MG Inc.
Panther - Sun Jan 26 11:42:41 1997

I can't belive it. Both Frankie Knuckles and Donna Summer have been turned down for the party. Just what is the problem here? I think it would be easier for Jimmy Barnes or the Cast of Home & Away to perform at the party than it would be for any act that actually means something to millions of us queer folk
Wondering - Mon Jan 27 15:48:13 1997
Alan, I met you at Sleaze '96, I was the screamer/moaner with no back to my outfit (if you could call it an outfit), and we spent some time together 'underground'! I will be at Mardi Gras and I am very keen to repeat the experience. If you don't read this and/or I don't see you I hope find some other(s) who will be just as much fun. On that note, I'd like to wish everybody, or as many people as possible, a very happy and fruity Mardi Gras.
Syn'er - Mon Jan 27 17:34:43 1997
Wondering - Jimmy Barnes now lives in France. And I know loads of queens who love home and away. I recon they'll have Wendy Harmer and the Today fm morning crew coming in on the Black Thundaz doing a number to some crap song by Human Nature. Or something equally as hideous.

Hear! Hear! Well said ' Mardi Gras DJ'. You all do a fabulous job for very little reward. 'Trouble' if you don't like the music move on.............. Was down in Melbourne on the Australia Day Long Weekend for Red Raw. Let me tell you it would have to be one of the most fabulous parties I've been to. The Shows were just visually stunning and the music brilliant. Melbourne you really have come of age. Mardi Gras the balls definately in your court. Go to it Gary L. Let's see what party you can come up with. You certainly have a big act to follow. Remember the last Party Director! Duchess
Tue Jan 28 12:14:14 1997
Kids, Talk about a rough recovery this Mardi Gras Have you seen what they have done to the laneway outside the Beresford and Flinders. Try sitting on the new bitumen they've laid down. You'll be scared for life. It's as rough as a Drag Queens face let me tell you. Bring a cushion if you want to sit down. If it's warm you'll be tar arsed. Could it have been done deliberately one wonders to keep the numbers down? No not South Sydney Council surely. Wonder who will be selling cushions this year? Ci Ci
Tue Jan 28 12:20:48 1997
Trouble, I'm with you - off with the crap DJ's heads...what you need is the fieeeerce talent of Gavin Campbell and Nathan G - 5 hours of progressive, sleazy bliss at Red Raw....that's what I call a party. Give us Universal Love at Mardia Gras too. PS The DJ's haven't been posted yet because they won't be "officially" announced until next week. Apparently a press announcement will be made later in the week.
No longer wondering after Red Raw - Tue Jan 28 21:28:40 1997
Woo Hoo! Mardi Gras is only 4 weeks away and I have no idea what I'm going to wear - oh dear! Time to get the sewing machine warmed up (what is the theme this year - is there one?). I have to agree with you too "Trouble" - no one wants to go to a Mardi Gras with crap music (and we all know just how important it is to have wonderful music at a party). Give me the Fabulous DJ's from Red Raw any day (except for that last hideous set by Junior B - what was with all those latin drums anyway???). At least with Mardi Gras if you don't like the music in one hall you can usually find good music in one of the others. Have a wonderful parade and party - hope to see you all there (this is my first and I'm trying really hard not to get excited yet).

New England Fog, I think you will need the Marde(sic) Party or New Orleans to overcome that complete disappointing feeling. Don't you think. Nothing like a little bit of cheese to ruin a day!!!! Go Cheeseheads
Dowager Duchess - Wed Jan 29 13:12:29 1997
Is it true that this year's lead float will feature those Novocastrian gay and lesbian icons: Miss Dawn Davenport, Mrs White Trash and Lolita Lickmeout?
The Goldfish Sisters - Wed Jan 29 13:55:06 1997
Are NIB Health funds putting a float in this year ??? I heard that NIB are well liked up there in Newcastle.
HCF - Wed Jan 29 14:58:41 1997
After the White Trashes had finished with them, they don't have enough money for a metre of holographic sequin material - they've even had to increase their fees by 17% today to try and recover their costs!
The Goldfish Sisters - Wed Jan 29 16:00:43 1997
I think NIB should put in a float with Mr & Mrs White Trash sitting high and proud that They ARE Family.
Wed Jan 29 21:19:20 1997
I absolutely agree with Bitter Bitch Jan 15. Mardi Gras has lost the plot. Hardly a mention of MG's origins or its political necessity. Gay men and lesbians still have a long way to go to claim the same civil rights as heterosexuals; but this has been totally lost in MG. It's all entrepreneurialism and commercialism!!!! Too little space and attention is being given to community groups and interests...it's all $$$$$$, spend, spend, spend......even charging $2 for a Fair Day program / how pathetic! And while lesbians should be well represented; it seems to me they're dominating the whole show. Still no all male space at the party!!!!! Why?????? Look at how popular the alternative parties will be this year.
Time for MG to change - Wed Jan 29 21:52:55 1997
Dear DovE, Junior B's set at Red Raw was not crap. What a fickle lot us queens are....you don't need to wave your hands in the air all night. I seem to remember that the "crap" set you refer to also included Janet Jackson and heaps of other groovy garage.
More groovy garage please - Wed Jan 29 22:15:57 1997
I must disagree—Junior B's set was crap. The music she played was very cool, but she has *no* idea when it comes to programming or mixing. She may get away with it in Sydney but Melbourne DJs are of a much higher calibre. This is why Mardi Gras is too scared to ever hire more than one. PS Red Raw was fab!
Sister Soul - Wed Jan 29 23:07:02 1997
Red Raw was excellent, VM's recovery was better, but roll on Mardi Gras. I can't wait to catch up with all my friends I left up in Sydney, see you will everyone else under the mirror ball...

Red Raw was totally fab. Who was the boy in the big black bat wings? And is he coming to Mardi Gras???
Sensible Shoes - Thu Jan 30 12:16:26 1997
Sensible Shoes: I too saw the boy in the black wings. He looked great. Of course it helped that the vitamins had kicked in by that stage. My boyf and I had a fab time at Red Raw that the Tuesday when we got back home we immediately bought tickets to the MG Party. Then that's it until Sleaze. Have fun all
Boytrash - Thu Jan 30 14:51:07 1997
Dear Sensible Shoes, I wanted to eat the wings off the boy with the black wings - but have you seen the book "Spanky" - he was a spitting image of the cover...yummy.
Hungry - Thu Jan 30 21:31:27 1997
OK Sister Soul you win, Junior B's programming was a little lacking - its just that we never, never, but never, get to hear any garage in the fair old town of Melbourne, so any little bit, no matter how badly programmed goes a long way. Perhaps Gavin & Nathan could repeat their fabulous 5 hour feat, but go all the way to the end next time - they were unsurpassable. PS Does anyone have any idea of the DJ line up yet - I heard that Mardi Gras were demanding that all DJ's played at least 3 Real McCoy songs in their set.

As the Weather Girls say "It's Raining Men". If only. It hasn't stopped raining for days. Does the launch still take place on the steps at the Opera House or do we get to move inside? Does anyone know?

Is the rumour spreading through Newcastle as fast as a drag queen at a frock sale true? Everyone up here is bubbling over with the news that for just $5.00 we'll be able to have our photos taken at Fair Day with the likes of the fabulous Indira 'how will I have my hair today?' Naidoo, Maggie 'The Freak' Kirkpatrick, the gorgeous Hugh Monroe, Marcia Hines, Gladiators of assorted types, as well as a whole bunch of other gay icons and dyke divas. I'm also salivating so much that my false teeth won't stay in at the news that at the very same stall, the spunky Hunk and Derek from the Albury will be offering massages and rub-downs!!!! You'll find me and the rest of the not inconsiderable Novocastrian contingent (Miss Dawnie Davenport for Miss Fair Day) at the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service's 'Celebrity Photo Shoot' stall. Happy Mardi Gras everybody!!!!
