Then on the 2nd of March there will be thousands of us and hundreds of thousands spectators in the enormous Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade.
Feel free to leave rumours, recommendations, reviews and fashion tips here. There is a form at the bottom of this page for you to use.

1996 Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Guide.

Might as well start off with some
rumours:
For the last two days I have been inundated with calls from people who missed
out on getting tickets to Mardi Gras. Isn't it funny how everyone becomes your
best friend when they need something? I might use them a little before I tell
them that I don't have any spares. Fancy leaving it this late anyway - where have
they been hiding? Red, sorry to hear you're not making it this year. I've got
friends coming down from Brisbane. By the way, you'll have to tell me the places
to go in Noosa. My boyfriend and I are driving up the coast after Mardi Gras and
heading to Noosa for a holiday. What's everyone wearing to the party? I've got
absolutely no idea. Any suggestions Betty? See you all at the Opera House steps...(PS:
where is everyone?)
This Graffitti Wall idea is cool! Ad -Fab, Alexandra Beach is the only good place
that I know of in Noosa, You have to walk through the National Park to get there.
And it`s anudist beach as well, with lots of shrubbery to hide..... good sand
and waves also. PS: Will be getting an E-Mail address soon.
Did anyone see that disgusting ad on the back of this weeks Star "Oxford Agenda"?
It doesn't say gay or lesbian *anywhere* on the ad.
It says "Triple M outdoor broadcast Courtesy of, Mardi Gras Committee, Oxford Koala Hotel".
What committee?
I would like to know if SGLMG knows anything about this. Also I think the SSO should be shot for accepting this ad.
We must make sure the parade remains ours: gay and lesbian!!!!
Panther - Sat Feb 3 22:00:33 1996
the launch at the Opera House was glorious! Bev Lange, your speech was WAY cool!
First went to MardiGras in 93, went back in 94. Since I have fallen in love with
the wonderful people of Sydney and Australia. You all sure know how to make a
lasting impression! Andrew L or Archie O, if you see this email me! Ken Zimmerman

Rumour: Little Johnny Howard has been converted and will be celebrating at MG
96. Let's hope NOT! Or at least he wants our votes, even if he doen't really believe
in equality for fairies.
Loved the Mardi Gras opening. Felt a bit sorry for the tree though! Maybe they will aim the fire works at the sky next year! :-)
Need a break before or after the mardigras party? Why not give yourselve an overall tan! WHERE??? At River Oaks the Gay Guest House In Byron Bay. Call us and make a reservation on 066 85 8679
what was The Opening like? I was annoyed at the lack of interstate coverage.
All those bums on all that concrete reminded me of my mother's warnings about piles!
Tiggy,
sorry to hear about the baby!
Yeah, Panther........I had a look at SSO back page, what are they doing? No mention of Lesbian or Gay!! Triple M has never been known as a supporter of Queers.
The Mardi Gras committee mentioned is obviously not the real SGLMG Committee but has been put there to fool people (interstate, international) into believing it is an official site. Just the usual straights living on the backs of gays (so to speak). They are prepared to f___ us, make money out of us, but not support us in the equality struggle. Boycott MMM (not difficult - it's so boring)!!! Do they have any phone in programs?
Thank god my flat overlooks Flinders Street.
Is it true that the Keep ( stronghold ) has closed down. I hope not, it is my favorite pub in Sydney and if so is there an alternative ?. See you at Mardi Gras.
A fashion tip for my dear curvaceous ones, I would of course opt for au naturel, but perhaps the world is not ready for such a step.
(Confidentially, I have found in my wild wanderings that most people do in fact look better naked than in much of what they choose to wear, isn't that a fright!).
I don't really care for faux animal skins, and llame is out before it came back in. No, you must be distinct. Something to enhance your nature and your form.
My prefence for you would be to obtain a chartreuse (I'm not joking) fun fur (the long acrylic type) bikini. A revolution will ensue, of this I am certain.
Or perhaps as an erotic juxtaposition, you could wear a full length bathing costume, unfortunately only interesting in theory.
Fun fur sweetness, a look for the mid-90s. -T]
Fashion tip for The Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras:
No more tiny little strech fabric outfits, that make you realize that most guys really don't have much down below, instead this year High Fashion. It can still be brief, and cool. It should just have taste.
Rumour: Bob Downe has bobbed out of the Festival Club.
My, my, my-you people in Sydney know how to rouse a good time.
Lotsa places to go and things to do. It's winter up here and we
handful of drag queens in La Grande, Oregon USA are hoping the
floodwaters will recede and the mudslides and snow on the
surrounding mtn. passes will clear out so we can head over to Portland
and walk that walk and talk that talk. Hugs, cheers and warm
personal embraces to all down under!!! Jenny T., Empress III,
Alyce O., Empress II, Bobby T. current reigning Emperor, Grande Ronde
Royal Imperial Court and all of us power post rave/HiNRG techno music
deejays at the local college radio station, La Grande, Oregon.
Does anyone mind if I come. I am one of those fence sitter type people. I love men, but I also love women. It is hard to tell whether I am welcome to the party or not, and whether I can bring my straight freinds?
Darling Genni, I'm sure I could love you to bits, but please, please, please, please, please leave the straights at home, we do see them every day. We need a break and its only one evening. If you want (or need to celebebrate with your lovely hetersexual friends, why not take them to the alternative party? -and its cheaper!
Dear Genni come to the party but celebrate the homogeneous aspects of your bisexuality with pride and joy.
If you got to see 'Bite My Chilli' you were priveliged. A talented bunch of young people.
A clever use of several talents. And the boys were cute too boot. Especially Eden and Scot.
For those of you who missed them, Catch them on their World Tour. Just don't mention Eve.
It's Fair Day, and from where I'm sitting the sky is blue (the rest of it is cloudy). See you all there and lets pray it doesn't rain on our parade.
Just back from a fabulous day at Mardi Gras Fair Day. It only rained for a few minutes.
Everyone and their dog was there. Watch Pinkboard for the photos in the next day or two.
I heard one young girl say to her friend "this place is wierd". I knew I was going to have a fun day, and I did. Even the rain for those few minutes was fun.
Mirror, mirror on the wall, who has the Fairest Day of all? Did everone enjoy themselves in Jubilee Park, I know I did!
Did any one see the Debate, No not the political one, the one on Saturday Night
"Is it better to be Lesbain or Gay " what a great night, the speakers were
excellent, by the number of people who couldn't get tickets we will have to find
a larger venue next time.
I have a spare ticket to the Carl Vine concert at the State Theatre at 6pm, 23/2/96. Anyone interested?
Alternative parties:
Heard that the Size Queen Club is not worth seeing. Thrown together trash.
Absolutely Mardi Gras at the PowerHouse was a bit of a dissapointment. They only had about ten costumes, and they were all the best of the best. They should be showing some of the simplier, less flamboyant, yet just as creative, costumes.
I did like the Brentton Heather-Kerr outfits, three of them, but only one of them had been worn in a parade, which is what I thought the whole exhibition was about. Same goes for the collection of wigs, and jewllery.
One would hope that they either approach people earlier to ask if they would like to lend costumes, not months later when costumes would have been dismantled.
Only two weeks and one day to go! I saw "Love, Valour & Compassion" last night and it was brilliant! For those of you who haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. Had a great time at Fair Day. I'm going shopping tomorrow for an outfit and I'm not looking forward to it. Hopefully I can come up with an idea and get it made. Any suggestions? Anyone going to Jamie & Vanessa's on Saturday night? Where is everyone? Betty? Red? Stomper? Anyone?
Ad-Fab, I was wondering where you had got to myself. I have been busy myself. Even got on to the national and local news. Last Friday the Anti Violence Council held a protest "Kiss-In" at the Treasury Casino, because they kicked out a gay couple for kissing!
So about 50 gays & lesbians gatherd on the front steps, kissed for the cameras, then did a walk through of the casino itself holdig hands! Security didn`t dare do anything!
by the way, gold lame would be nice. LOts and lots of gold!
MARDI GRAS FAIR DAY, what a great day it was, lots of people and dogs. Yes two of our staff members River Oaks Bed and Breakfast drove all the way down to Sydney and set up a stand to promote our wonderful guest house. To our disapointment however we found it very hard to find our friends who had a stall there. Why was there no information board somewhere explaining what is where and how to find it? Why was River Oaks stand not with the other gay accommodation houses? A couple of chairs would have been nice to have dear organisers standing up all day was very tiring.Anyway the day was great we managed to talk to many people however dear committee please arrange a litle more comfort for us next year and have us placed with all the other accommodation places. We did feel a little isulated on our own. Thank You. Ifd you missed the Fair Day try to make an effort next year, it's a great way to see what is available on the market place. See you there next year. If you were there how about some comments. You can E-mail me on riveroaks@om.com.au
Please advise me: Do you think a Carmen Lawrence wig and glasses would be appropriate for the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Erection Day Mardi Gras?
Can any Parade frequenter suggest a spot in Oxford St for out-of-towners at their first parade? We understand everywhere will be crowded, but are some spots better than others?
Just found this site: http://www.noconnect.com/mgcam/sscope.htm which is a camera on
the New Orleans Mardi Gras. Fat Tuesday is tomorrow so thats when they have their parade. I think you have to look at it from about 2am to see anything.
Gary: The best place would be in the BGF reserved seating. $45. Book with First Call (02)320 9000.
If you don't want to pay for it try anywhere beyond th Flinders
Hotel. Unless you are there well before 7pm don't even thing about
Oxford St or Taylor Square.
Panther - Mon Feb 19 22:46:15 1996
Its been three years since I made it to the Sydney G&L Mardi
Gras and I'm scheming fiendishly to try and make it back SOON!
It was absolutely the most fun I've ever had. Last two years
I've had to settle for listening to the Parade via the intl
phone lines. But this, year I'll be able to see it live online.
Thanks so much for putting all of this together, I may be in
Austin, but for a little while it'll feel like Oxford Street.
Dave
HIya AB FAB, No Good here. Well yes I went to Jamie and Vanessas and had a Fabulous time, especially on the Love Boat on the Harbour, although I must say our captain in no way resembled Captain Stubing, more of a Julie - Cruise Director look I would say. What a night. I did meet some fabulous people from Adelaide though and lost them. Remember me, all the way from Arno Bay!!!! If youre out there, drop me a line, or see you at the Beresford sometime. PS. AB FAB. How about rubber , particularly white rubber to show off a tan for the party!!!!
So tell me all, were is 'the spot' to go after the party ???
Does anybody know anything about how interstaters can get onto the Queer Collaborations float (or around its fringes) this year. I have been trying for a week to get through to someone at UTS (University of Technology Sydney) about this but everyone is out all day making the float and they haven't got back to me. If anyone has any info about how I can either get on the float or near it please e-mail me on s_murrie@eduserv.its.unimelb.edu.au. Thanks.
Ab - I've been chained to our parade entry, trying to get it finished. The end is in sight, and we should have almost a whole week to spare. This should give me plenty of time to check out the action around town.
As for outfits - one word - GLAM.
Back again soon.
Size Queen: First place to go is "The Lane" that runs between the Flinders and the Beresford.
You just have to be seen there, before you go home and slip into something more/less comfortable.
My other faves are anywhere for coffee where you can be seen (191 is the usual for recoveries)
the Shift both Downstairs and Upstairs (if you need to dance some more), the Oxford when it gets later,
and The Phoenix for when you don't want to go to bed. I basically want lots of cute men around to look at
(and more?) and good music, but I don't usually have the will to dance any more. And you have to be able
to talk all day about how good/bad the party was, how many/few straights, the people you saw and didn't see,
whether your drugs worked and what they did for you and how much you took, the shows
and whether you pissed on trough man.
Thanks Party Animal, I intend to be on that trail until at least
6 am on Monday moring. Its serious party time and I want to
experence it ALL!!! Again, thanks for the advice.
Ad-Fab, Where are you? May you and your boyfriend have the best Mardi-Gras EVER!!!!!!!
I wonder whos 1 year anniversary it is at Mardi Gras, in the RHI to be exact!!! Maybe the Matchmaker should receive a fee?!!!
Seven days to go and I just can't wait to get up there
from Melbourne and into your sex on premises venues for a quick
starter, then THE PARADE AND PARTY, back to Oxford St for some
serious refreshments and getting some more of more I started
out with again.\
Remember guys - if it's not on, it's not on!
That should be the really cool rool - no matter how well the drugs
and other shit are working.
Safe sex means you'll be well enough to cum back again!
Love to hear your thoughts. Mail me on MichaelBrown@access.net.au
just 2 more days until we leave hot old perth to go to the gras
just can't wait. Hope all you Eastern Staters are ready for the W.A. invasion
Hello everyone! Is everyone getting into the festive spirit? Anyone go to Shop Yourself Stupid? It was a beautiful day! Cindy did a great rendition of Blondies "Atomic" in the middle of the road across from the Albury wearing nothing but oversized shopping bags. The Blue Party at the Shift on Friday night was a great trial run for this Saturday night. Nothing like a visit to the dancefloor before Mardi Gras to whip you into shape. Very dissapointed with the weather on Sunday. It was my last chance to brush up on my suntan (like every other queen in Sydney) I guess the solariums will be filled this week. Looks like I'll have to get the old bottle out!
I'd love to be going but us straight girls aren't very welcome at these parties. I'll be seeing lots of photos and will be hearing about it for weeks later so it will feel like I was actually there. Hope everyone has a fabulous Mardi Gras! Ab Fab, I think you'd look really hot in white PVC!
SHOW RUMOUR NO. 34839
Olivia Newton John at 2 or 2.30 in the RHI
Bjork at 6.00 in RHI
Joanna lumley is also going to be in town......
Show Rumour No 1: (I really haven't heard any rumours) Gemma and Margot!
(They are a couple of friends who were going to a reherasal.)
Show fact
: Stephen and Jason are in the opening show in the RHI.
NO GOOD : Guess who's second anniversary is also in the RHI at Mardi Gras too.
SHOW RUMOUR NO.323324239867
Opening show at 12pm will feature Maude Boat,Bernina Bod, Portia and 70 Dancin' Queens
I put an ad in the Pinkboard Classifieds but I noticed that only 26 or so people had looked at that section. For various reasons I will not be going to the Mardi Gras party and would like to sell my ticket. I am not a professional scalper. I was serious about going until this week.$90. Sorry if this is not quite kosher, Pinkboard. It won't happen again.
Rumour : Olivia cancelled. Too many filming commitments.
Maurice: My only comments are make sure it goes to a gay man or a lesbian and give anything
extra you get over the price of the ticket to charity. Selling for more than the purchase price does sound like scalping. :-)
CumGuzzlinGutterSlut : Sorry to correct you, but it is 108 dancing community members.
***RUMOUR*** I heard that the one-and-only HELEN DEMEDENKO is
going to make her first post-scandal public appearance at the
parade. She will reportedly be surrounded by dozens of queeny
clones. No, I'm NOT kidding. I wonder if she'll now "become"
a dyke, as well as a Ukranian peasant? Can anyone confirm this stuff?
Holy Cow, I'll be so upset if it's not true!
One DAY to Go!! YIPPEE!!!!!!!!!!
HAPPY MARDI- GRAS EVERY ONE!! Especially Ad-Fab, Ray, And Peter.
Play safe
One more day to go! I am so excited! Hope everyone has a marvelous Mardi Gras!
I HEARD THAT HELEN DEMEDENKO IS GOING TO MAKE HER FIRST POST-SCANDAL
PUBLIC APPEARANCE AT THE PARADE. SHE'LL REPORTEDLY BE FLANKED BY DOZENS
OF QUEENY CLONES, ALL IN LONG BLONDE WIGS AND UKRANIAN PEASANT
COSTUMES. I HEARD THIS FROM A VERY RELIABLE SOURCE WHO IS ALWAYS RIGHT.
I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IT!
Mathew, get a grip love. What was the last favour Helen D did for the Gay community.
Helen D has done sweet f***-all for the gay community. But who cares?
She's an object of ironic admiration. She's a camp figure. Remember
the Bronwyn Bishop frenzy a couple of Mardi Gras ago? Now she
HATES gays. (Although she is friends with Alan Jones!) I just
think she's a hoot!
Debbie Harry?
Mathew, get a grip love. What was the last favour Helen D did for the Gay community.
What is this : why is it that every time I reload The grafitti wall the last thing I type gets re-submitted?
Happy Mardi Gras to everyone in Sydney! Made it there in '92
and had a blast - hope to make it again for SGLMG next year.
I'll be following the parade on Pinkboard here in Toronto,
Canada where it is minus 12C. Party hard Sydney!
Oh my God it looks like rain again
Yes, Panther. I have to agree, in the clear light of day selling the ticket for more than what I paid is scalping. My apologies. No sale.
missed the parade due to illness! aaw shit! mardi gras cam
needs to be closer
What's a telephoto lens? Answer; something that MArdiGras Cam needs DESPERATELY!
Oops. Looks like the camera had a bit of a problem focusing.
I'll capture some that are in focus. We also took still photos.
So watch this space!
Thanks to excellent organisation this years parade & party were the best yet. Everybody I've spoken to so far has agreed and I hav'nt even heard any complaints about the hetro contingent. Happy Mardi Gras everybody & roll on Sleaze ball
Greetings from Dave and John from Dallas(we did the 60 minutes piece last year)We had a wonderful time last year...we hope to get back next year again! Were doing great and hope this years party was the best! Hope it didnt rain!!!
Two days after one of the best parties we have ever been too, the lighting the music the atomosphere made the party the only place to be on the planet,,,, my lover and I can only feel fortunate enough to have such a party on our doorstep in this great city. It is a terrific time to catch up with friends enjoy our own space Our flatmate Charles attended his first this year we doubt he will ever be the same again......
Thelma Houston was one of the best performance seen, unfortunatley not one of the best kept secrets but youy all know what queers are like, when it comes to secrets!!!
Any how congratulations to all at Mardi Gras See you all at Sleaze Ball
I'm so happy that the rumours were true (for once!) Helen Demedenko
WAS there! All 12 of her. (Sigh!) What a woman...er women?
What a way to end a party! Thelma was fantastic and I was lucky enough to be right in the front! The 12pm show was one of the best I've seen to date. How all those people managed to be on that small stage, I don't know. How is everyone recovering? Anyone go to the Shift on Sunday night?
Judging by the responses, it looks like everyone is still recovering from the weekend. I was very dissapointed by the ABC's coverage of the Mardi Gras. Where were the Dykes on Bikes????? The commentary was appaling and sometimes quite insulting. It would've been nice to have the music audible so that we could feel the excitement of the night. At the end of it they advertised the video and I thought to myself "who would want to sit through that again?????"
5 days post-Mardi Gra and I'm still in recovery :-)
Brilliant party - my first actually....but definately
NOT the last!!!!!!!!
I agree with AbFab. The ABC failed to capture the atmosphere of the parade in a BIG way. I would have liked to have seen more views from street level and less of the birds eye views. As for the commentary : did the idea of dubbing something a touch more interesting than the drivel we were subjected to not occour to anyone. The male commentator was especially annoying as he continually interrupted the woman especially when she actually managed to squeeze a bit of wit out.
Oh and by the way this bitch session is not a result of the weekend - I went through all that on tues/wednesday. As for the party : it was one if not possibly the best I've ever been to Congratulaions to the Mardi Gras Committe you did a Fan Bloody Tastic job.
Guess what. The still photos didn't turn out either. Someone has offered to put some of their photos on.
Does anyone else have parade photos that I can use on Pinkboard?
Please email me if you do.
I'm glad I found this after MG. reading all the pre MG posts would have made me only more pissed off that i wasn't going. ABC coverage was woeful sound - but i suppose they were busy with the other party/wake.

We watched trhe telecast from A.B.C. this year it seemed to miss the ideals and nature of such a parade i feel that the community would like to see more interviewing and footage of events during the festival...... after all we were being filmed and vid taped through the festival......surely A.B.C. has access to such material the interpretation of the whole festival and the parade not to mention the party and the day after would be far more interesting this would also show the community at large eg,, Mr & Mrs SUBURBAN that we are not just capable of staging the largest nightime parade in the world.......
i
I appreciate the effoorts of the ABC perhaps with the elections they were pushed a little off centre..... Perhaps next those in the television industry may have some suggestions....... Lets Wait and See!!!
G.P. R.S. A.M.& C.T. ERSKINEVILLE N.S.W.
Where's Doug of Tarata Hot Solar surely his lovely

Yes but when lover?
Suck not such
Check out Urban Exile Artspace's
Mardi Gras Recovery
WHAT A FANTASTIC PARADE! WHAT AN UNFORGETTABLE NITE!
Congratulations Sydney, you're right up there with Melbourne
now when it comes to parties. NOBODY, BUT NOBODY WILL EVER
BEAT YOU WHEN IT COMES TO A PARADE THOUGH.
What a pity the ABC stuffed up YET AGAIN! I WAS AT THE PARADE AND
SAW THE TV COVERAGE AND THOUGH THEY WERE TWO DIFFERENT EVENTS!!!
When, oh when will we let one of the better commercial networks
do us proud really proud?
I certainly won't be buying the video! Once bitten, twice shy!
Fantastic sex action at showgrounds though. Keep it up!
Have an `Ab Fab' holiday darling. Well miss you while you're away. Enjoy your Honeymoon!!!
Was anyone at the Bar Cleveland last night? Did they see the gorgeous guy in the check shirt????
No, No Good, I wasn't but tell me more!
What more would you like to know?? Measurements!!!!
What a night. I had BIG FUN, it was SUCH A GOOD FEELING.
I was taken to the PROMISED LAND. The parade was fabulous, I thought THINGS COULD ONLY GET BETTER.
I felt FREE, GAY, & HAPPY. The party was electifying.
I visited the infamous mens toilets and said to the young man, BOW DOWN MISTER, IT'S WHAT'S UP FRONT THAT COUNTS.
What a BRILLANT FEELING!! My SEX DRIVE was on over drive.
The music could have been better, but RHYTHM IS A MYSTERY. I told my friends GET HERE if you can, you will have a great time.
I met many beautiful men, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE - HERE I COME.
I hope every enjoyed the Mardi Gras.
Gordon bennett, I was out of it. (AGAIN) but whats a girl to do?
Sounds like we ALL were really.
AB FAB - happy anniversary to you and your number cruncher....

Does anyone know if manny made it this year in the marching boys
I need to get organised for next year's parade. Does anyone know when Mardi Gras 1997 is set for???
Feels like I've missed something. Is it (the Mardi Gras..) really that great,
or are you folks pulling things a bit out of proportions?
Best regards from cold Norway.
DB
Dear DB of Norway - YES YOU HAVE MISSED SOMETHING - MARDI GRAS IS THAT GREAT, and this year's party was the best. Try and make it sometime. You would have loved one of the recent Sleaze Balls the theme was Valhalla and there were lots of near naked Nordic Gods running everywhere (alos some very ugly Vikings too!)
Dearest Betty beatkweene ,I was so disheartened when i returned to the internet and saw that you haven't
left me a message , MOLE , now a girl feels like cutting her wrist's .how would you
like to live down here with that hungry hole of your's " I THINK

Next year MG is on 1st March. See you there.
Hi everyone. My lover and I have just returned from our holiday. We drove up the coast and spent time on the Gold Coast, Sunshine coast, Brisbane and back down to Coffs. It was nice to have a break. Now its off to DCM on Thursday night to party hard! No good, I'll wear a check shirt just for you!
