It's here! Tonight we celebrate the opening of the of the Mardi Gras festival. Yay!
While I was not around for that first march in 1978, I have been around Mardi Gras for most of these last 30 years. This is a very important part of my year and my life. I celebrate the achievements of these last 30 years and drink to those who have put in the hard yards. Not just those who dedicate their time to The Parade or The Party, but also the political campaigners and lobbyists, the carers looking after our community members, the counsellors who listen to our worries and fears, the writers and educators teaching about acceptance, and everyone who has had the courage to come out. It is a long list to celebrate, but celebrate we will.
But we haven't got it all yet! We are waiting on the new federal government to reform 58 laws that discriminate against same sex couples. We are fighting in the ACT for the right to have a ceremony when we declare our relationship. We are battling homophobia and homophobic attacks on our home ground of Oxford Street.
Over the years I have marched, danced, skated and ridden in the parade with many different groups. These include New Tradition Dancers, Gay Skate, Pink Link, Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service, the award winning Spoofters, Black White and Pink, Boys on Bikes and even New Mardi Gras. Building a float or costume and taking it in front of those enormous crowds cheering is an amazing experience that indicates some small modicum of acceptance.
The festival is our opportunity to see events about us. Plays where we are portrayed as normal people doing normal things: like falling in and out of love, coping with family, work, dreams. Innovative theatre. Performances by the greats from around the world and from home. Exhibitions, some of them a bit rude. Sporting events to watch and participate in. And more! Too much to fit in these few short weeks.
Fair Day is one of those wonderful days when the whole community gets together. We pop over to this park and plop down our picnic blankets. From humble beginnings in Green Park we have outgrown Jubilee Park in Glebe and now fill Victoria Park.
Then after we have done all this we have a little party with 20,000 of our closest friends. This is The Party, not the after party as some seem to be calling it. The after parties come after The Parade and The Party. This is where we hug long lost friends and sweaty strangers and wish them a Happy Mardi Gras!

Due to the uncertain weather conditions we are moving the Launch of this year's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival to the Supper Club (Will and Toby's) on the 1st floor of the Oxford Hotel in Taylor Square starting at 5pm!
Come on down (but get there early to make sure you get your spot) and help kick off our 30th anniversary celebrations!
And for those of you who were looking forward to the tree planting. Never fear! Mardi Gras always has a plan B!
Currently listening to: I can't stop the rain - Missy Elliot
because back then it was THE only major dance party. A lot of people seem to forget the very important factor.
People moan about the good old days when there was a party on at the Hordern almost every weekend. I have been doing them since mid 80's. You basically only had one type of music to dance to like you heard on the radio and Top 40 etc.
By end of the 80's other types of music diverged from all this like Trance born from House etc and so instead of there being 1 party on in all of Sydney you started to get a couple to choose from. This was in the straight and gay scene. By 90's you could easily have a dozen or more parties on each weekend which we still do. You just have to pick up mags like 3D plus the gay rags to see parties being advertised all with different styles and different sizes. The straight scene also started to do their own parties at Hordern then later at Homebush not to mention worldwide parties like Ministry of Sound and others visiting Sydney.
So the main reason Mardi Gras does not attract those huge numbers is not because NMG has not got their act right its because it all diversified nearly 20 years ago. Back then posters really moaned about the amount of straights and thats because we put on an awesome party ( and still do). But they now have their own to attend.
Raves are still going strong although smaller.
Oh and you will be surprised with your guess at 10,000 to the point you will be embarrassed you posted that.
Can you name one Government/TV series/Organisation etc
that has not had its Peaks and Troughs ? NMG was around the time MG collapsed but NMG each year has been getting better and better and the last few years my friends and I and other posters have commented how the parties are like those of old and this 30th is going to have the atmosphere of the ones that got 25,000 ! and you can quote me on that
So not its not dying a slow death.
Maybe it is time for you to call it a day though or at least calling it a day for your predictions.
This Party is going to prove you soooooooooooo WRONG.
It could just as easily have rained on the Opera House steps. The Launch as been getting bigger each year and I have been going to them all but I looked at the weather predictions and knew I would not be attending as I think did the majority of others.
So yes its being moved indoors.
you are wrong on both counts.
using your ticket number as a guide to how many tickets have ben sold is the fabricaton.
there are ticket outlets all over australia who have had blocks of physical tickets allocated to them for a long time now. they have had number pre-allocated to them. there is no way you can tell by your number how many have been sold.
they sold 16000 two weeks ago. it will before the next three weeks is out.
totally agree. the addition of the 2nd members space is just one example of how big this party is looking. 10,000 people, I wouldn't be surprised if they had already hit 10,000 and are heading towards 20,000.
"Sydney Mardi Gras celebrates 30 years
Saturday Feb 9 21:40 AEDT
It was hugs and kisses, six foot drag queens and backslapping all around to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the launch of this year's festival.
Rain on Saturday afternoon forced the event indoors but it did not deter more than 100 happy supporters who attended the celebration at Darlinghurst - the inner-city birthplace of the once controversial parade. ....
Olivia Newton-John will be among the performers at the party following the parade on March 1.
For tickets to the party and information about all of the Mardi Gras events, people can visit www.mardigras.org.au"
Was it truly neccessary to promote the party via ninemsn??
Gosh cheer up people - the 30th Anniversary Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival has started! Get out there and enjoy and while you are just think about this...
Mardi Gras started as a protest at a time when homosexuality was illegal and gays and lesbians did not have equal rights. While many laws have changed there are still 58 federal laws that discriminate against us.
The celebration that is Mardi Gras is put together by thousands of volunteers who give up their time throughout the year to ensure the events are the best possible. Sure there are ticket sales and sponsorship dollars but all things going well these just cover the running costs. The engine room of the events are the volunteers who control and execute everything including the budgets, marketing, logistics, scenery, entertainment and on it goes. Fu*k even ONG is only doing it for a donation to her charity.
Mardi Gras would not occur if these volunteers did not have the passion to give up a day, a week, often time equaling months of their year to make it happen. This passion started from a protest march and has continued for 30 years...
So cheer up and enjoy a celebration built from love. All the volunteers ask of you is one thing... just bring your smiling face!
i can not believe that people are suggesting that we would not allow straight people to march in the parade. What have you got against the HOGS? Anything in particular or just the fact that their straight bikies.
shall we get rid of the firies float? the coppers? the ministers who are marching to apologise?
read the guidelines people. I can't believe that you're suggesting that the parade of all things should discriminate AGAINST people who support us.
"The gay and lesbian Mardi Gras is an example of the gay community doing itself no favours, Labor Senator Jacinta Collins said.
She added that on some occasions people were called “homophobic” when actually they were just showing good sense."
She said homosexuality must never be allowed to become equal.
Collins told the Senate the gay community needed to exercise “care and concern” to present itself as acceptable. 2004 http://www.ssonet.com.au/archives/display.asp?articleID=4222
"her new term beginning on 1 July 2008." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacinta_Collins
since the hogs bikies are joining our parade , why not let the people who run all the straight niteclubs in oxford street have a float , the can man the float and throw insults at all the gays up oxford street, and when they finnaly arrive at the glamm stand beat up all the gay tourists. what a wonderful mardi gras !!!
Surely people and groups wanting to participate in the parade will support gays and lesbians. Let's be open to all the support on offer. How can we ask for support and then refuse it? We want to be part of the wider community. And we are - more and more. Let's give thanks for that!
If you see one MG Festival event this year make sure it's Corpus Christi. A contemporary story of Christ but he's not a Jew, he's born in Texas and he's gay and so are the 12 diciples. I've seen some crappy Festival stuff over the years but I can not rave about this play enouogh - truly brilliant, well acted and the guy that plays Christ has an amazing 6 pack. A must see.
There's no such thing as 'reverse discrimination' (i think that's a good ole Pauline Hansonism... as was 'reverse racism'). Discrimination is the same both ways. Thought we might have some discussion on this - was referring to the HOGS being a group of over 50 quite large and dominating - who, by the way, the DOB have welcomed into the parade. Just wanted a chat, but no, too hard. Got abuse instead. Sigh.
PS just what IS a pancake head?
Hmmm 16,000 sounds exaggerated to me.
The main source of buying tickets across Australia is Ticketek. What outlets do you know of sell block of physical tickets besides Ticketek? And besides, if they are sold at different outlets, how on earth do you know the total sold so far is 16,000?
16,000 - no problem in my view. Lots of friends who haven't partied for years are coming for this special one. There will be lots of 50+ people who'll give the party a very mellow, welcoming feel. And I do sincerely believe the Pet Shop Boys will be heading to Sydney on Qantas in 2 weeks time. My belief beams are radiating out there!
IMHO, I'm not sure the parade should have the HOGs and purely commercial floats like the TripleM float of last year. I think it should be all community and protest groups. Of course they could have sponsership, but the main message of the floats should not be about buying some product.
The Dykes on Bikes should definately continue leading the parade, since they start up the excitment of the crowd and also it's safer to have them up front than stuck between other floats.
don't let the folks make you feel bad.. your discussion was valid and you asked a simple question.
it is certainly very possible a group would walk in the parade and use the space to create a negative view of gays (for about 100m until everyone boo's them off the street).
nonetheless i think the other posters have pointed that perhaps these dominating men are on our side, and in the light of all the tension lately, it is nice to know we have some friends in Illawarra. perhaps some of these bikers are also gay? we'll see
First I don't know what a Hog is - sorry
The Parade was born as a platform to promote gay and lesbian visibility. It is not a vehicle in my view by which any one who wants a bit of self promotion or publicity should be able to take part in. Participants who are not members of the gay and lesbian community should only be permitted to march if they have a demonstrated history of supporting our communtiy.... That's all.
I think this year form what I have hear commercial entries have been toned down to almost non existence, and they have to show why they want to march. No more cash cows, but actual support for our community.
Which, by the way, is what the HOGS wanted to show.
As for party... I can't wait to get to the RHI and stay there as long as I can... though I have been known to be a bit of a wanderer when I'm... *cough* not quite sober
Also known to be a bit of a tart to be honest.
Currently listening to: Worst Pies In London - Helena Bonham Carter
Yes, i am aware of that you know. I actually live a long, long way from Oxford St, and work in commercial tv!!!! I'm not a "gay ghetto" resident by any means... I know some of us like to listen.... blah blah blah blah BLAH!!!!!!
you know what? as I said yesterday, forget it.
Perhaps we'll just get back to talking about the things we're looking forward to, and not the things we don't particularly agree with. The parade and party are so close now - I'm looking forward to the night.
Last night was the Mardi Gras Short Story Competition. Even though the attendance was smaller than last year, it was a great night. "Sweet Treats at the CWA" was great fun and deserving of the prize. The youth prize winner "The Parking Lot" was poignant. The rest of the stories read out were also great. You can read them all on http://www.gay-ebooks.com.au/
We LOVE providing up and coming DJ’s with a platform to boost their skills, experience and profile and there’s no profile quite like the Mardi Gras Party.
The winners of the DJ Spin Off are Stryker and DJ Toi. Stryker is a loud and proud gay boy, Sydney born and bred. He's been seriously DJ'ing since 2000 and has done everything from friends' birthday parties to fill-in spots at the Midnight Shift, as well as holding his own Kamp Kristmas parties twice a year. Stryker will play his own brand of funky vocal house with a focus on cool basslines, with a brief detour into darker waters in his winning set in the Forecourt.
DJ Toi started out in bands playing everything from classical to heavy metal and settled into DJ'ing regularly in 2005. She's played at Sydney venues including Yu, Candy's Apartment and Middle Bar so far. Get ready for a smooth mixture of tech house, hip hop and sexy electro when DJ Toi hits the decks at Party.
Jeremy Brennan & King Casual Live At Will & Tobys Supper Club
Jeremy Brennan and his dirty pop collective King Casual are playing a one night only Mardi Gras Festival showcase at Will & Toby's Supper Club on Tuesday 26th Feb, fusing pop, ska, blues, and UK Soul blend to create a modern sound not dissimilar to the vein of Young Disciples, Driz-a-bone, Madness, Incognito, BNH and the Soul Family Sensation.
Fronted by keys player Jeremy Brennan, the band's freight train grooves and laid back styles have earned them a reputation for tight, punchy live sets powered by Brennan's remarkable voice - even prompting one reviewer to cry "Dayum, this man can sing!"
Regulars on the Sydney party scene, King Casual gig highlights include private parties for myspace and QANTAS, as well as playing last year's Mardi Gras Dance Party and appearances up and down the east coast of Australia. Most recently Jeremy and his band have been supporting rising star Courtney Act for her series of DIVA Award winning shows.
They also recently celebrated the launch of their debut album Actionality. One of the tracks "I'll Never Weather" is featured on an American compilation CD Artists against Cancer which has just been released through iTunes.
And if you haven't heard enough of Jeremy Brennan, keep an ear out for the new Snooze 'Mad World' TV commercial's - you'll hear him in one of his quieter moments singing the theme

Let’s get soaking wet with four seasons in one day!
The annual Mardi Gras Pool Party is tomorrow, Saturday 16 February, from 7:00pm.
The Pool Party will continue with rain, hail or shine, which makes it THE best outdoor event? With 1600 boys and girls in itsy bitsy teeny weeny swimwear, you can be sure it will leave you hot, wet and up for more.
Entertainment on the night takes a twist with a special “Slippery When Wet” Fashion swimwear parade produced by the amazing Lenya Jones using fashion provided by Aussie Boys, SOS and Beach Shack. MC’d by the delightful Tora Hymen think hot guys and girls doing a choreographed number to sexy tunes in some equally sexy swimwear, and just when you think it can’t possible get any hotter, we have the Gaydar Boys at their Gaydar stall with the inimitable Portia Turbo trying to get them to (mis)behave. To get your toes tapping and your Speedo’s shaking, we have Luke Leal (Arq) and Sista P (Bitch) guiding us from sunset into the midnight hour.
There are hot showers available, food and a toddlers’ pool with fountain water feature and surrounded by a wet-deck covering, so let’s get wet under the cover.
Cloak check will be onsite so people can continue their partying, so grab your towels and head down to Victoria Park Pool for a night of literally good clean and chewing gum free fun.

I was very disappointed with the films this year. Not up to previous standards. But maybe if the sound allowed me to actually hear what the characters were saying it could have been different. Even the picture wasn't very clear.
On the other hand, Butterflies of the Mughal Garden was fantastic. I felt like I was in a Bollywood production. This is well worth seeing, these guys have put their heart and soul in to this production and it shows!
The Southern Cross Outdoors Group has been forced to cancel the 2008 Mardi Gras BushDance.
The original venue of Marrickville Town Hall became unavailable after the Marrickville library was damaged by a flood. The contents of the library have been moved upstairs into the Town Hall while water damage is repaired and new carpets laid.
A suitable replacement venue could not be found.
Needless to say we are very distressed about this for many reasons, especially at this point when you have put work into organising your group.
All we can say is how sorry we are for the inconvenience.
We have a firm booking for the Winter BushDance to be held at Marrickville Town Hall on July 25 and truly hope that you will be able to be there.
Donno about diverse crowd but certainly a very straight one. Why is MG marketing the Harbour Party in the straight press? Are they so desperate to sell tickets they're selling out the integrity of the event.
Fair Day is strictly licensed only. No BYO will be permitted. Do not try to bring your own alcoholic drinks.
Also they will be asking for a $5 donation from everyone. Last year apparently they averaged 10c donation per person. They appear to have erected barriers around the park. Presumably to help enforce both of these.
I support both of these moves. It costs a lot of money to put Fair Day on. They need to recoup some of these costs from the participants. $5 isn't much. Last year the bar prices were reasonable.
Just back from Fair Day. Huge crowd this year, it seemed! Didn't mind handing over the $5 - all good. The Pride History Project graffiti wall was a great idea - lots of people stopped by to record when they experienced their first Mardi Gras, their first same-sex snog, their first e, etc, etc. Great reading!
cant believe that Annabelle and Bill wanted out of mardi gras party, all the DJ's I know who didn't get selected are gutted/upset that they didnt get picked. to get chosen then pull out? whats going on? glad mark is in though.
"cant believe that Annabelle and Bill wanted out of mardi gras party, all the DJ's I know who didn't get selected are gutted/upset that they didnt get picked."
I'd say the two that pulled out were probably promised something and then NMG failed to deliver. Happens all the time. You'd be very surprised how many DJ's over the years have been selected by Mardi Gras only to decline based on numerous issues. Pay rates, Equipment brands/models to be used, time slots allocated to a DJ, and the other DJ's you would have to work with in the same space on the night are four of the more common issues over the years that have resulted in DJ's deciding it wasnt worth the effort to agree to play.
Fair day was great - agree that the beer was awful. I noted about a dozen at least people just charging in at the gate without paying - they didn't seem to notice the collection buckets - or didn't care. Hard to tell.
They said to me when I was paying my $5 " For a Free
Fair Day next year" ?????????????
why next year ? will there be another avenue of $'s coming in ?
I think its fair to be donating $5. I was one of the first suggesting this ages ago when we had cut down parties etc and got up my nose about subsidising free events. Fair enough if the corporate sponsors there pay enough to make it free but not to suck money out of any other areas.
Wonder if those barging through did notice but just wanted their free events and as not compulory, didnt want to pay ?
If just a third paid it could be close to what $100,000 ?
Maybe they should charge $5 entry and then allow byo if the beer was crap as others described ? then the entrance fee could be up around $300,000 to $400, 000 if it attracts 60,000.
surely those things are sorted out WAY before the names are billed on the poster, therefore if there is an issue about any of those points, the agreement to play would not have been made in the first place. sounds strange to me. have bill and annabelle actually pulled out? has it been announced officially?
OMG I had THE BEST weekend. Pool Party was a hoot - but I seriously need to get to the gym! Fair Day knocked my socks off! Maybe THE BEST yet?! Thank you New Mardi Gras for putting these on, and THANK YOU to all those zillions of volunteers, you were FABULOUS. I didn't mind being asked for the donation, not even the third time!!! The last guy was a real salesman and talked me into another $5 but it was worth it! I did see some people saying no to donating - you were the only disappointment at Fair Day and I hope if you come next year you give then.
I got my email on Friday I think from memory. Lined up at the Enmore this morning to get them behind about 10 or 15 other people.... very exciting indeed! Even the Members' Viewing Area is going to go off this year. Woohoo! Exciting, exciting, exciting!! :D
i couldn't get them either. went to the ticketek shop in park street at lunchtime and they said people were lined up outside to buy them this morning and that it was sold out in an hour. oh well, better dust off the milk crate!
I also missed out on member's parade viewing area tickets - I got to Ticketek at 10 am and it was too late. I was surprised cause I had no problems getting tickets last year. Does anyone know whether the size of the viewing area is the same this year? Or has it been made smaller?
just got home from fair day and im still buzzing from the great vibe in the bitch tent.
id like to thank to all the performers, kyla, michael and his wife, irene, renae, chip and sista p who rocked it! (sorry if i forgot someone)
all these people proved once again that a party can be enjoyed without any cheese, divas or cheesy divas.
everyone was smiling, friendly. guys and girls were mixing well.
thank you MG for putting on such a great event.
these kind of events cost so much - i dont understand what is this $5 whinging about. i wouldnt mind paying much more if i had to.
see you at the harbour party.
In the lead up to the 30th NMG has had a significant increase in members. This resulted in them releasing two tickets per member. I heard that they sold the same number of tickets this year, which sold out in record time.
This event has sold out every year as its a great spot to watch the parade and a fantastic event in its own right with DJs, entertainment and a fun GLBTQ crowd.
How very shortsighted...how can they justify asking for money to go into a public park?????
It is a public park but the 100+ entertainers, the 200 stalls the dog shows the dance tent, and the 100s of vollie hours put into staging such an event......they have every right to ask for a donaton if not actually charge $5 per person.
It was the best Fairday i have ever been to and it really angers me to think people dont see it as fantastic value for money.
I was a volie yesterday and it was an honour to work with such an amazing group of real hardworking guys and girls who instead of 'bitching' get up and do something for the community.
If your issue is about wanting to use a public park without paying, there were dozens of options other than Victoria Park available yesterday. If you think it's "offensive" to be invited to support NMG, don't. Just spare us the tight-arsed details.
I had the best time this year. I always have but something was different this year. I think it was the attitude of the crowd. A big thank you to all involved but I really think it was the crowd who made it special. People were so into it and all having a great time.
I only had $3 when I went through the gate and planned to go back and donate some more when I got change but never made it. I got so caught up in all the fun I forgot. I did spend an awful lot of money at the cocktail bar so I hope some of that makes its way back to MG. Those cocktails were so yummy! They were also better value I think even though they cost a bit more plus the queue was always shorter!
Currently listening to: Read My Lips - Melissa Tkautz
Well done to the organisers for a brilliant fair day! It was actually good to see the queues for drinks, bitch tent etc. because it means the community was out in force to support the event. We planned our day expecting the queues so we weren't disappointed. And the volunteers we met just added to the vibe of the day - well done and thanks. It was the best organised and most enjoyable fair day ever. And yes, we paid much more than the $5 as a donation and would again.
The only sour note was the unfortunate behaviour of some of the punters in the bitch venue...making the remainder of your community worried about being verbally abused and physically attacked is not good form, girls. Very unexpected, and it was a few groups causing issues inside that venue. We noticed security moved on this quickly however we ended up leaving early and so quite a few other patrons who were concerned with this. Not cool and not in the MG spirit.
not to mention the costs of permits, licenses, power, public liability insurance, and the many, many other hidden costs that go into putting on a public event for everyone's enjoyment. give me a break - $5 is nothing for what we all get out of this event and its nothing compared to the man hours that are needed to stage and event like this. i think bitching over $5 is really low actually...
I was only at Fair day for a little while. I had a busy day. Mainly went to buy the new Ruby CD.
There was a great turnout and looks like they raised a decent amount of money. Looks like the organising was top notch and lots of people were having fun. I noticed more dog than last year too.
I think the other problem with the drink queues was that the food stores weren't allowed to sell soft drinks, so people wanting a Coke etc. had to line up with the alcohol drinkers.
Sounds like Fair Day was a hoot! Wish I was there! Coming down for parade and party, and from the mood of most posts here, sounds like the vibe is really positive. Even better.
Looking at the icons for previous years' posters has made me think back to some of my first Mardis Gras. (Would that be the correct plural?) I remember the Saturday afternoons when the drag queens were out in force on Oxford Street. I often look back at my photos of the Marilyn Monroe in a tight red mini dress. She and friends were making a video of the day on Oxford Street. Looked like a tourist video. And the following year, a drag queen was doing a number on the traffic island outside the Oxford Hotel while the music blared. Fab!
Hoping that this Mardi Gras captures the spirit of those years, as well as including the vibe for the future. Countdown Boy, thanks for building the excitement.
I think MG should have charged a bit more given that BGF are charging $120 a seat to view the parade. Yes I know it's for a good cause but the financial security of MG is also a good cause. Have been told MG Party gonna sell out by thursday wooo fuckin woo. I hope it does. MG needs a sell out event. then can we have it close at 10am - purlease. Everyone at my gym is going and that hasn't been the case for years. Support the community. It needs our money it need our support and it looks like it's gonna get it. But MG if you don't invest in producion around party and try to cut corners you'll lose the enromous good will you have build up this years 30th marketing success . People are willing MG to be the best ever do please don't disappoint. Bring in some of the past experts.from the past to help out and advise Cobden, Leeson,Harben,Dot, Goggin,Prescott, Croft,Anthony and the rest of them. they'd do it for fee. There's talent there use them.
What ever happened to Shop Yourself Stupid. Drag shows up and down Oxford Street on the Saturday before Mardi Gras, people in cars and buses travelling down the street realising that they were no longer in Kansas, and truely priceless moments like Portia Turbo riding on the bonnet of an unsuspecting car lip-synching to Dont Rain on My Parade. Maybe public events like this on our street on a more regular basis is exactly what we need to once again reclaim our street.

i'd say just do it..... the days of the gym bunnies are well and truly over.....
everyone looks fab after a disco lolly and in the dark lights of a dance hall....
i,m just happy my tartan bondage pants with front and rear pleated flaps have arrived..... combined with a bit of bling and red fishnet..... i'm gonna look hot... stuff the hard work at the gym... i've done the hard work on ebay getting the outfit together...... see you on the dancefloor.... getting real excited now !!!
Read in the paper that Mandy Moore is in Melbourne on the 5th March. Now Hex Hector's remix of Mandy Moore's single 'Candy' was a big dance hit back in 2000. My sister-in-law tells me NMG don't want to announce the secret special guest (other than our 'Livey - closing show with Zanadu) for fear of attracting the wrong crowd. My prediction - Mandy Moore with 'Candy' for the 4am show in the RHI and to finish Hex's set. Deborah Cox has an appearance in Canada 28th February (Hex's favourite) so it won't be her.
Although Danni M. is back in the country but my money's still on Mandy Moore. I think there will also be a show mid set for Hex and it has to be Cyndi unless Cyndi is at 4. THey could squeeze Danni in with a 6am show.
Great to see fantastic turn out, even during the week, at Queer Screen Mardi Gras Film Festival.
Was such a great atmosphere tonight with lots of people, saw "Outing Riley"- very funny, clever writing.
It's a shame that in Australia we don't have any other avenues for these films... such as Foxtel/Optus/Austar who don't show any of the gay tv channels that are available in Europe & Nth America. Instead, on my pay tv I get the Australian Christian Channel, Crime Channel, and various other channels I pay $105 a month for. Would be great to see gay-themed channel 365 days a year, not just gay storylines during Mardi Gras Film Festival.
Yes. I don't buy into the whole No carbs, gym, etc world. Im not the smallest guy in the world, not the biggest either. Combination of exercise, healthy food etc gets me through. Sure I have been eating more salads in the past few months and that is helping but its summer and salads make sense. I don't understand how some people find time for the gym every day. Its 11.27pm and im only just finishing work for the day. Gym..? Not right now for me.

Absolutely not Deborah Cox. According to her web site she will be in Au Canada on 28th February. But Mandy Moore is in Melbourne 5th March and Hex Hector had a big dance hit in 2000 with his remix of her hit single 'Candy' so my bet is Mandy Moore singing 'Candy' for the 4am show in the RHI to finish Hex Hector's set.
Cyndi Lauper let the cat out of the bag this morning on the Today Show confirming she will be performing at Mardi Gras Party and she wants to see the parade. Bit hard to see the parade if she is performing that night.
God its great being 21! All i do is a few situps and jog every other day for half an hour and eat whatever i want whenever i want and... Hello great body!! I have a feeling that this will bite me in the ass one day tho... LOL! If anything i have been exercising more in the lead up to mardi gras, but not eating less... could never do that!!
Warning - Mardi Gras Party tickets set to sell out!
Just got a Mardi Gras Newsletter.
Tickets to your 30th Anniversary Mardi Gras Party are set to sell out. You've been warned! Members have until midnight Sunday to secure their special priced members tickets before the offer ends and the final tickets to the last lucky few go out the door.
Get you tickets now at www.ticketek.com.au or phone 132 849. Flash your membership card at your local Ticketek outlet or over the phone by midnight Sunday 24 February to take advantage of the special offer while it lasts. Don't suffer through the stories from everyone about the best 30th birthday bash ever.
Well I bought my ticket way back in January. If they sell out and guys miss out you can not blame anyone but yourselves. We'll tell you how good the party is. I'll be lining up at 10pm to get in and they'll throw me out with the trash. See you all under the mirror ball.
Do you think that we would be allowed to whirl around in a pair of roller skates for xanadu ? I must admit my friend has a bit of weight behind her. Once she got a bit speed up she may have a problem pulling up could do a bit of damage.
If you haven’t got your tickets for this year’s Mardi Gras party better get your skates on!
The Mardi Gras Party officially ‘sold out’ earlier on this morning, but after negotiations with the venue managers we have secured a final release of 1,500 tickets which are now on sale.
To make sure these extra party goers are catered for we’re putting in additional venues into party footprint and will announce these details shortly – so stay tuned for the latest information!
As part and parcel of the extended capacity / footprint, we MUST turn off member price ticketing close of business Sunday (24th). So, if you’re a member and haven’t got around to buying your ticket better get a wiggle on!
And just to confirm, once this final release sell out there will be NO MORE RELEASES. NO TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE ON THE DOOR!
It’s now or never folks! I can’t begin to tell you how excited everyone at Mardi Gras is that we’re selling out the party this far away from the event! It’s great news. So get your ticket today and be part of history!
We do have tickets left for Sol Y Luna for this Sunday although they’re selling fast too.
So, see you on Sunday at Harbour Party and then under the glitterball at the party to end all parties!
We're so excited about Harbour Party. It's forecast for sunny & 25 degrees. Add to that some of the hottest guys from around the globe & what I believe is a fantastic DJ line up, not to mention THE VIEW!!!
"We're so excited about Harbour Party. It's forecast for sunny & 25 degrees. Add to that some of the hottest guys from around the globe & what I believe is a fantastic DJ line up, not to mention THE VIEW"
The view is great , just like the view of the doggies at the front gate of the party !
I must say the though of all those show ponies and drag queens on roller skates gives me goosepimples. Especially if there's podium nearby. One small miscalculation in balance could see a very nasty projectile off a triple twist with arms and legs in all directions into an unsuspecting audience.
It would of made sense to have 500 or so tickets left to sell at the door with a $50 markup...
I hate to see the scalpers or anyone else making a profit selling tickets at the expense of Mardi Gras when Mardi gras should do it themselves...
Here are a few warnings about buying your ticket from e-bay (or scalper).
1. If the person has given you an ezyticket there is no way of knowing if they have printed off another copy. Once that ticket has been checked through the gates then whoever has the second ticket can't get in.
2. If the ticket appears on e-bay and the ticket number is visible and it sells much higher then face value ticketek has the right to cancel the ticket. They might even notify the original purchaser... but do you necessarily know they will pass that news onto you and refund your money?
So avoid the anxiety of turning up at the turnstile with a potentially fake/invalid/overpriced ticket... go and buy one now!
While it's good the Party is about to sell out perhaps Mardi Gras could have set aside a small number, maybe 100, for those boys coming from overseas and have not arranged a ticket. Yes I know they could have bought online but it would be a shame for visitors who have come especially for Mardi Gras to miss out. Perhaps only sell the last 100 tickets to guys with overseas passports. Just a thought....
ahhhhhhhhhhh, trust me no one wants to go here again, I used to operate one of the old ticket terminals at the Toolshed years ago and this was the case for a while, international tix were still available, while local tix had sold out, the howls of protest made my ears bleed.
With a brave musical footprint Mardi Gras has sold out a week in advance. First time in a long long time! The nasties who bitched about it on here can eat my shorts!!!
Cant wait to rock out in the forum.
Heard that with the additional tickets the figure will be around 18 to 19 thousand.
Hopefully the weather will be ok or Mardi gras will erect some marquees outside. It will be very crowded / humid inside if it rains.
Getting very excited! Seems to be more of a buzz this year!
Been telling guys all week to buys their tix to MG. Now sold out I've had 2 guys ask me already. Well done MG. Can't wait. I know it's only 8 sleeps to go..... wonder how many hours and minutes and seconds that is. I'll have to do the maths and get back.
I'm amazed (but pleased) that the party has sold out. I got my tickets some time ago, but I have some friends coming from overseas and I've telling them to buy theirs online, but I don't think they have! I assume that their only hope now is pick up some on the secondary market!
Ho do you make yourself look? By under promising and over delivering, which is exactly what NMG has done. By starting off with an inadequate number of tickets in the first instance, they sold out! Looks good right? NO! The fact is they FAILED to properly plan for the 30th party! I know many people, myself included, who want to go, but can't now. Who benefits? THE SCALPERS!
NMG needs to take a good look at itself. Instead of releasing only 1,500 extra tickets, they should release 5,000 more. I bet you they will sell.
What they should now do is get off their asses and talk to Playbill to increase capacity, which is still possible, and release more tickets, through next week, and on the door.
A friend who moved from Sydney some years ago told me about the 'circuit' that existed for sex on premises venues over Mardi Gras Party weekend. A different venue went off at different times of the day / night throughout the weekend. eg. Ken's was supposedly fab on Sunday afternoon after the Party. Can anyone give me some more up-to-date advice about where to go an what do do re. venues to make Party weekend a complete 'bang!'
Good point. You'd hope by now most of the internationals have their tickets well and truly sorted. If not, then unfortunately it seems like it's too late.
The amount that some of the MG tickets are going for on eBay is ridiculous. ONE ticket is already well and above the $300 mark.
Nonetheless, the fact the party has SOLD OUT has put a great buzz in the air. Let's just hope for some beautiful weather... maybe like today, but a bit cooler ... and then we can really start to party.
I got mine on Monday and it was 14,000. Now I know there's fierce debate every party on whether the number on the ticket is accurate and depends on what ticketek office you buy it at, blah, blah, blah but my guess would be the capacity for MG this year would be around 15,000 give or take 1500 extra tickets that MG secured to sell after the official sell out.
If you think about it, how many tickets would they have sold between Monday and Thursday to push it above 15000?
It's going to be a fantastic night regardless of the final numbers
Also in yesterday's edition of SX New Mardi Gras were asking for volunteers to meet the parade entrants as they finish the 1.6km march. They were offering a discounted Party ticket as a thank you. People interested in volunteering for the finish area were asked to contact firstname.lastname@example.org.
Might be worth a shot if you missed out on a ticket.
Offers have passed the $500.00 mark for a single ticket.
It's nauseating what people will pay for an event that lasts only 10 hours.
In other words $50.00per hour or more!
The demand has reached fever pitched hysteria.
I'm sorry for the people who would like too but can't go due to financial restraints etc.
Lets try to share the mood if not the party!
Do people have no idea what planing has to go into a party? The concept that you can "just release more tickets" astounds me. There's the licence for a start off (currently 28 days notice in NSW) Fencing, security, safety, volunteers etc etc etc.
Sorry for those who don't have tickets, but you were warned!
I hope that everyone finds something to celebrate on the night!
Whilst many discuss the issue of getting together the money to afford a Mardi Gras ticket at $150 each... I wonder WHO are all the people that go to Sol y Luna ($120), Toybox, Homesexual ($75) etc, etc one after the other all in the same week??? How do those people afford to go to all the events (and without complaints about price).
"I wonder WHO are all the people that go to Sol y Luna ($120), Toybox, Homesexual ($75) etc, etc one after the other all in the same week??? How do those people afford to go to all the events (and without complaints about price)"
Ever heard of prostitution ? It's all the rage this time of year
countdownboy - Having no sympathy for those that expect more tickets might go on sale .... your lack of planning will be a valuable lesson next time... the old motto never rang truer - buy early too avoid disappointment - Sat 23 Feb 2008 00:53:10Replies: add
To be honest I think most people could afford it. Its really nothing different than saving up for a holiday or a used car or clothes or TV.
Some can afford all , others just decide thats there weeks holiday or put off buying something till later.
Of course there a those where just 1 ticket is too costly for them but the gay scene is known for having more $'s to spend than most communities.
It's called "saving up" and "planning". We all knew a long time ago that there were going to be many parties around/on the same weekend as the 30th, so putting aside a bit of money week by week a few months prior isn't really that hard to do, is it? I know people who go to at least 3 parties and the only way they do that is by saving up early.
I suppose my point is, people unneccesarily pick on & whine about Mardi Gras Party... but we don't hear anyone whatsoever complaining about the price for say Sol Y Luna Party ($120)- yet there are still lots of people going to it, if not sold out already. Or the almost completeley sold out Cyndi Lauper concerts at $99 a pop.
I really want to snap some photographs of this year's parade - being the 30th anniversary I'm expecting it to be fab - however, I'm unsure what to do with my camera when I go to the party. I'm happy enough to put the camera (in a backpack) in the coat check... if there is one... but is there a general restriction on taking cameras into the party venue? For some reason, I keep thinking there once was such a restriction...
Selling 1500 tkts in 12 hours...... that's alot to sell and one must ask who's buying?,,,,sclapers i suspect..... it shouldn't be allowed and I hope police will move the scalpers on. So annoyed that it appears so many guys can not organised themselves to buy tickets that have been on sale for almost 3 months.
Judging by the bidders' IDs on ebay it looks like the bids are fake. Well I would hope so. Anyone can get a hotmail address and then set up a new ebay account and bid and then never pay. this stops people making money from this kind of thing. If it was a legit exercise of getting rid of an unwanted ticket, then put on the face value plus $10 or so for handling.
"By starting off with an inadequate number of tickets in the first instance, they sold out! Looks good right? NO! The fact is they FAILED to properly plan for the 30th party! I know many people, myself included, who want to go, but can't now"
Oh please. You leave it to the last minute and expect everyone to be sorry for you? Mardi Gras have been saying for some time that tickets were selling fast and earlier this week issued a warning via email of the impending sell out.
The fact is that Mardi Gras have negotiated as much extra space as they were allowed to do so. I'm told they have added new venues and a number of new DJ's who will be announced this week.
Up until 2001'ish the party used to sell out by mid to late January. Seems some people have got complacent since and now want to blame Mardi Gras becuase they couldn't get themselves organised.
It's been a long road but the Mardi Gras magic is well and truely back!
QUEENS and sports fans could bring Sydney to a grinding halt this weekend.
The cruise liners Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Victoria will attract thousands to the harbour while thousands more are expected at a Mardi Gras party at Mrs Macquaries Point.
The State Government wants spectators to use extra public transport services to avoid the traffic gridlock that occurred when tens of thousands flocked to the harbour to see the QE2 and Queen Mary 2 together last year. But tomorrow Sydney also has to deal with the Mardi Gras party and possibly 80,000 sports fans at Moore Park for the Australia-India one-day cricket match and the A-League soccer final boasting two NSW teams.
The Queen Victoria arrives in Sydney Harbour at 5.30am today. It docks at the Overseas Passenger Terminal in Circular Quay at 7am. The QE2 docks at Garden Island tomorrow at 7am. At 6.30pm the big ships will cross either side of Fort Denison as the Queen Victoria departs and the QE2 heads to the Overseas Passenger Terminal for the night.
The one-day clash between Australia and India at the SCG is a sell-out and Aussie Stadium could pack in 44,000 for the A-League final between Newcastle and the Central Coast. The soccer match should be over by 7pm and the cricket by 10pm.
NMG is not a joke and they did speak to Playbill and did increase the amount of tickets on sale. The additional capacity also sold out. NMG have been advising for quite some time that this is the fastest selling party and that tickets would sell out. Congrats to them on selling out in advance. Its going to be an amazing party.
A dear freind of mine is on disability Pension, which leaves hime less than $300.00 per fortnight to live on for food, bills and living expenses.
Hence planning or saving for a MG ticket is not justifiable or even possible.
I have bought him a ticket just to watch his face shine with excitement!!
NMG is responsible for the Party and the buck rests with them. No one said that they were responsible for global warming!
Some people think that the party selling out is a good thing. Stop, and think for a minute. If the numbers were too low to begin with then of course it will sell out. NMG looks like heros. However, the are not. The fact of the matter is, NMG got it totally wrong!
NMG is suppose to be a group that is supporting the entire community, hence they should be catering for the entire community. They are running a Gay and Lesbian Party not a Michael Jackson concert. Our party should never sell out. The only thing that has happened this year, is that NMG has sold out the gay and lesbian community.
WTF? How can you sit there and type that? By LAW they are NOT allowed to oversell. The venue operatords will not let them. If they oversell, Mardi Gras won't be able to get IN the venue - nor will ANYONE who has bought a ticket!
What the hell... should NEVER sell out? That doesn't make sense. Of course it can sell out. If they reach the LEGAL capacity of the venue then they have to say it is sold out. What's more, Ticktek only issue enough for the venue. Playbill and Ticketek go hand-in-hand. They'll know when it's oversold.....
What a silly thought. Sounds to be like someone is pi**ed they didn't get their ticket in time. Well, too bad I'm afraid. You should have got in early.
Love the sour grapes.... Too funny your email is just plain STUPID!
The plan of running a party is to sell out?? HELLO is there anybody out there?
We are going to all have a fantastic party, hope you enjoy one of the free pubs on Oxford Streety and really enjoy the FREE community spirit!! Because that is all you deserve after such a funny, but dumb post!
I totally agree. Somebody is pis##ed off as they didn't get a ticket and now its all NMG's fault. Sweetheart you have had 4 months to get your ticket. You didn't and there is no body to blame but yourself.
Even scalpers got organised this year to buy tickets to the party, why didnt you?
Mardi Gras last year sold 15000 tickets. This year they increased the footprint and sold 20000ish. Sounds like they planned correctly and will laugh all the way to the bank.
If you didnt get a ticket, then its clearly your fault. And finally, we now have another reason to become a member as NMG emailed all its members warning them to get in quick. Maybe you should become a member and take their advice.
'Judging by the bidders' IDs on ebay it looks like the bids are fake. Well I would hope so. Anyone can get a hotmail address and then set up a new ebay account and bid and then never pay...'
Erm, you obviously don't understand how Ebay works. You can't just do that at all and the 'Bidder 1', 'Bidder 2' names you're referring to are a new system introduced by Ebay whereby the bidders identities remain anonymous.
The only issue I would say with buying on Ebay is that scalpers will snap up lots next year in the hope of making a similar killing. Since the demand won't be the same as it won't be the 30th anniversary next, year they'll probably do their money, but Mardi Gras will benefit nicely from their generous donations.
To those idiots saying its NMG fault for them not getting a ticket... SUCKED IN!!! I got mine early, everyone else got theirs early, you only have yourself to blame for being a tool and not getting one! Serves you right!! LOL!!
What's the thoughts about those doggie things sniffing at your crutch?
P.S. Am surviving on a Disability Support Pension. Started saving for the party in April last year. Ended up having to lend money to a friend that works full time for the money for a ticket. Some people just live for now. I live for the things that are important.
Hope I get to talk to each and every one of you!!!!

Last year I asked the security check person about cameras. She said they are allowed in but ask that people respect others privacy by not taking their picture if they don't want you to. I took a camera to Sleaze but was having so much fun I hardly took any photos. I think these days with phone cameras and tiny cameras they've given up policing it. My new camera is so small it fits in my pocket and can hardly be noticed. I'll be taking it to MG
Also just back from the lovely Ms. Amm, and looking forward to the fantatsic Ms. Cho next Thursday.
Meanwhile tomorrow is Entrant's Briefing Day for Parade Entries, getting nice and close now, can't wait to meet the reps and hear all about fantastic float ideas and see whats gonne be blazing up Oxford St in under a week.
Went to Big Bingay last night as well, won nothing, but what a hoot anyway, and good to see the tables down the front who have been putting in hard yards... claps to them.
As for Party, what can I say, hooray for NMG08, selling out, despite what some other folks have said on here, is an amazing otuocme for a party for our community, and I look forward to being there (had my ticket for a while now, been sittin gathering dust) and I look forward to ... well, lots of things.
Most of all though, can;t wait for Parade, when so many nagging, scathing tounges are silenced, as people from all around the world come to our little place, to celebrate Freedom, Liberty and Brotherhood (and Sisterhood :P).
Looking forward to seeing all of you, well, the positive minded ones anyway.
There is a rumour circulating that NMG will release more tix next week. The rumour also suggest that the freeze in MG tickets is to encourage people to buy Harbour Party tickets instead. All of these rumours are untrue. As it says on the NMG website for the whole world to see...MARDI GRAS PARTY HAS SOLD OUT.
There are other nasty rumours that have been circulating, such as Harbour Party will be cancelled...NOT TRUE.
See you on the dancefloor tonight at Harbour and again next week end
Isn't it going to be one helluva a sight tonight from Harbour Party as the two big ships QV & QEII pass each other in the harbour around sunset with the Opera House and Harbour Bridge as the back drop. Should be one of the most memorable Harbour Parties yet with two Queens on the water and thousands more queens watching them as they party on. And such a beautiful Sydney sunny day being put on for the party. Hope its a sellout for NMG.
Lets hope this beautiful weather stays for next weekend.
Just a reminder that Harbour Party is on today at Fleet Steps in the Domain. The forecast is for a clear, warm sunny day so the stage is set for the world's most glamorous party with the historic backdrop of the crossing of the Queen Victoria and QEII in the harbour. Come help celebrate the start of the final week of this year's Mardi Gras! Tickets are available at ticketek outlets (no internet or telesales) until 3pm today and then on the door at the event!
You know even if MG could swing it at the last minute to put on more tickets (which they can't) The nasty mud slinging and baseless accusations on here would surely stop them. Who would want this bunch of moaning blamers trying to say they were proved right.
I for one am glad that OP won't be at party. Mean I know but so is the spirit and content of the posts. This sort of attitude and selfish negativity is what's tearing our community apart.
F***ing Hilarious!!! I love how you're blaming NMG for not releasing enough tix & you not having the foresight to buy you're tix early to the biggest Mardi Gras Party ever. I'm not a member, live in Brisbane & bought my tix months ago via a long standing MG member because I knew this party would sell out. And as mentioned in many a response to your ridiculous claim, there is tix limit due to the legal requirements a venue/tix operators must take to ensure the safety of all patrons attending. Maybe you don't remember the 2001-2002 NYE Harbour party where a greedy promoter oversold tix to the venue claiming he expected people to come & go throughout the night & by 10pm a massive fence was put up & riot police called to quell the public who had tix to enter, but were refused. I remember this as I was working the following day at Ticketek responding to many a p*ssed off person, only to direct them back to the promoter.
THANKYOU NMG for putting together what will be a fabulous celebration of Gay Pride!!!
PS I'm sooo looking forward to see Cyndi at the party!!! Will she perform 'Shine'???

I've missed out on getting a ticket, and obviously it's no one else's fault but my own. It's been a crazy month of moving house and starting a new job. I was looking forward to MG but just didn't get around to buying a ticket.
I for one would like to congratulate NMG what already seems to have been a huge success. The buzz surrounding the 30th anniversary after party has been palpable. Here's hoping it's a night for revellers to remember -- a night that not only entertains but will also bring together the community in a way that makes people grateful for what we have, and united against the challenges and inequities that still confront us.
Agreed. I think, from memory, that the all-up site licencing limit is around 21,000 and these days it's rigorously enforced. Back in the day it wasn't and I remember that there was an estimated 28,000 onsite for "20 years of Mardi Gras" in 98. It was fabulous but also incredibly crowded - dangerously so at some points.
I think NMG has been sensible in opening up additional venues - and releasing extra tix - in line with the revenue coming in, but there's an upper limit and I'm guessing that they've pretty much reached it. Should make for a great party.
Fark me! We are a spoilt bunch, aren't we?! What an amazing amazing community (except for the very odd person here and there making very odd comments). Mardi Gras just keep announcing new and exciting things for the night of parade and party. Thanks to Marcus and the crew for what is going to be the night of all gay nights! Hoorah for Mardi Gras! Everyone going to Harbour Party this arvo, have a fabulous time. No doubt it's going to be one of the better ones.... the weather is spectacular! Thanks Mother Nature for really going all out for us! :D
Yeah i know should have got me ticket earlier, but some honestly do struggle financially...its a shame to see the "F*&%^$ you jackie im ok attitude"....its bad enough not being able to attend.im hoping and praying the NMG can release one last batch to give the "penance" seeking party sinners like myself a chance at the 30th anni party..please confirm that Joel Osteen is right...here's hoping i can make it to Xanadu next saturday nite Please NMG i'm waiting to jump if a limited release batch of tix are made availible and i'd rather my money goes to NMG than the scalpers who are asking $500 plus....the pX
Thanks for the heads-up darls. My camera is not that small - the price you pay for a 10X optical zoom and 3" screen. I think I will stuff it down my pants but I'll have a bulge like Tom of Finland - maybe not such a bad thing.
Yeah. Hope they end up with tickets that don't get used. Not 'cause I want to see people miss out, but because I think that NMG should be making the $$$$$$. You know.....to keep the thing running. We don't get any help from anyone else. Hello Clover. What's the story. Why not come to the party? WE've kept you in office for.........
Have just seen the forecast for our big weekend and shower's are expected. Let's hope it's early in the day and fine for the evening (something like last night would be ideal).
Should those infamous puppies be in attendance does anyone know what our right's are in relation to being searched etc? Am yet to come across them and the thought of them makes my friends and I nervous -regardless of whether anyone is carrying anything the law deems that they shouldn't be. Just the thought of the general unease they could send through the queue is unsettling.
We're so excited about the parade and the party. As everyone keeps saying the vibe surrounding the party this year is great and everyone seems ready to celebrate our big weekend in one way or another.
Hey hey now... don't fret about the weather. I keep tabs on the weather forecast on the Bureau site and it changes about three or four times throughout the week.
Usually Perth's weather three days beforehand is a good indication of things to come. And their forecast is for sunny all week - and high 30s. I'd say we can expect some warm, sunny weather like today.
I have never seen puppies at the entry queue. The Police priority is to nab people who are trafficking heavily on premises. There are plain clothes officers present throughout the evening for that purpose. I do not support people who traffic toxic substances that result in collapses and demands on hospital emergency rooms. All of us surely want a safe and happy party.
Yes they can search you, pockets etc.
No they can not strip search you without reasonable cause or suspicion so don't turn up off your trolly.
My advice is don't carry anything illegal but if you were to in your undies please not pockets or socks.
Absolutely no pot or coke. Dogs can smell that a mile off.
Anything you do carry is for personal use only. You're not carrying for friends... that's intent to supply.
If you are approached remain calm and do not panic chances are they will just pass you by.
If you are detained do not admit anything with proper legal advice.
just home. was a good party. hotties everywhere a little quiet tho, especially towards the end. and i did miss the 2nd dance floor. it was always nice to be able to go wandering upstairs... Kate Monroe played the best set of the night. the canopy over the dancefloor was a nice thought although not necessary in the end... it divided the dancefloor up into 3 distinct sections. sound was good. so suggestions for next year are bring back the second dance floor and a few more punters!
the easiest orifice for us all if only small amount in double/triple bags so long as your cheeks arent bulging
under arm with triple bags with very small sprinkle of lavender oil but not enough that you reek of it.
Just wanted to thank all the kind souls that made entrants briefing day for parade a success on sunday during the day.
I had a wonderful time meeting new people, especially one cute Area Co-Ordinator ion my radio training.
As for the rest of you that brought your attitudes and forgot your patience, save it for people who get paid to deal with your complaints, a team of well oiled (tehehe) volunteers in coloured shirts are there to help you, pay them some respect.
Harbour what a gorgeous party. As we watched the ships a guy from Frankfurt couldnt believe how beautiful the whole thing was. He said it had made sitting in a plane for 22 hours worth it. Not to mention the hunky boys.
The gay crowd at Mrs Macquaries Chair cheered the ladies loudly. As a taxi driver explained, that's the thing about queens and Sydney. "They're a bit like Bondi buses. If you miss one, there'll always be another one along in a few minutes."
What a glorious evening!
And what a fabulous start to a week of reflection, community and the love of social fabulousness!
Cant wait to see you all at the party!
What a vibe, you should feel proud of your community and what all of you have achieved and celebrate it loudly!
Happy Mardi Gra Darl!
It was an excellent party - my estimate as about 2000-2500 people there and a great mix of locals and tourists. Very sexy crowd and everyone was up and having a fun fun time. Kate M played an awesome set - music all night was great - only 1 show (I think) and it was on stage with the DJ (Alex T) - not sure the name of the guy who performed but he did two really great songs. Loved that fact that (apart from the two boats) there were no other shows, NMG invested in putting on a bloody good party that wasn't overdone. Thanks to all.
Here's the LOW DOWN from the NSW Police media website ...
Police launched ‘Operation Appaloosa’ to ensure the safety and security of those attending the weekend’s events.
The major high-visibility operation comprised general duties police from across Sydney plus Highway Patrol officers, the Commuter Crime Unit, Public Order and Riot Squad, the Mounted Section, PolAir and Dog Squad.
During the operation, police arrested and charged several people for anti-social and criminal behaviour. This included:
§ 23 drug-related charges resulting from a drug-detection dog operation at the Mrs Macquaries Point dance party. Police allegedly seized drugs, including ecstasy, Gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), cannabis and other substances from revellers.
§ 18 drug-related charges stemming from the police operation at the dance event at Alexandria, including a 17-year-old Kellyville boy charged with possessing ecstasy tablets and a 19-year-old Gorokan man charged with supplying and possessing ecstasy tablets. Five infringement notices were also issued for trespass offences.
anyone know about any new tickets being released by NMG?
Hi..saw rumours about very limited release of xtra tix for MG party maybe announced today or tommorow is it true or just lead-up hype??..see scalpers doing a roaring trade on ebay atm...seems an abundance of tix there..maybe having the cash is more important than celebrating the 30th anni...
Some of our tickets that were being sold on consignment are being returned unsold.
This means that we will be able to put these tickets out for resale as soon as possible as soon as we know the exact figures.
Please note that this is NOT a new release of tickets. The capacity of the party has not increased since the release of the extra 1,500 tickets earlier in the week. It is not possible for us to increase the footprint.
Stayed tuned to updates from www.mardigras.org.au or www.sxnews.com.au or other online channels for exactly when these tickets (which are likely to number a few hundred maximum) will go on sale.
In the meantime, spread the word and tell your friends!
dont get your hopes up!!! sorry to tell you all this..but just rang NMG offices this afternoon (monday 4.30pm) and person (female) who answered phone said they could not confirm the quote from NMG president marcus on SSO website and that one shouldnt get their hopes up for another tix release.. she said "there had been talk but again one shouldnt get their hopes up"....the plot for trying to get tickets continues..dont beleive me?? call NMG offices and they will tell you the above...
Pinkboard can confirm that it was written by Marcus Bourget. - Panther

For Mardi Gras to announce Olivia N.J. meant they alwas had someone bigger as a suprise to pull out on the night. Cyndi Lauper may very well be performing at the party but the only big trump card for them to play to rival Olivia with Xanadu has to be Kylie. I would put alot of faith in the posting regarding Ms. Minogue on a flight from London to Singapore en route to Australia. The gay community has been with her through the good times and the bad times. She wouldn't turn down Mardi Gras' request to do the 30th anniversary party and celebrate with the community. I'm sure it was a done deal months ago. She'll most definitely be queen of the night with the peak 4am show in the r.h.i to finish hex hector's set. I can feel it in my waters.
again the plot thickens..now same same is reporting that tix will go on sale most likely thurs/fri and via Ticketek...Pres Marcus is quoted..check it out here: http://www.samesame.com.au/news/local/2021/More-Mardi-Gras-Tickets-To-Go-On-Sale.htm
...again I'd take all of this with a pinch of "sherbet"..but how credible is SSO or Same Same if they are publishing quotes from NMG president??? are they reliable as sources of info?? this is not a put down of either publication..just trying to see if info they are publishing is true.. as stated b4 i rang NMG this afternoon (mond 4.30pm) and they couldnt confirm the president's quotes and were pretty skeptical about further tix being released...Panther can you enlighten any further???..please do...

Well I can tell you one thing for nothin....... the RHI is gonna be PACKED for hours. It'll be back to the bad/good old days of waiting for shows, squished liked tinned sardines, waiting waiting waiting, boys & girls peaking, trying to dance but not being able to, shoulder to shoulder, sweaty back to sweaty back...Yay!
I bought my ticket online from Ticketek as an Ezy ticket which is sent as a PDF file that I printed out. I wonder how many of those eBay tickets are Ezy tickets that are printed out from the same PDF file? It's OK if you're first through the door, pity about all the others that come later - so let the buyer beware!
My goodness, what a mess. Not only are the scalpers selling the tickets for $1,000 on eBay, there are now tickets that have been "returned on consignment". What the hell does this matter mean??? We need some transparency here. The good news is that at least NMG are listening to the community.
Good to see that people can still have a good old fashioned discussion and debate.
BTW, the aim of a concert/event is not to "sell out", but rather to entertain by properly planning in order to accomodate as many people as possible in the confines of the venue. For a 21st or 30th you don't make provision for 10 people to come to the party!
There will be a very limited number of tickets released for sale later this week through Ticketek. Check back here for details about when they go on sale. Or sign up to the Mardi Gras newsletter to receive updates.
Have to agree with all the positive comments about Harbour Party. Also have to add what a surprise to get a huge bottle when I purchased some water. Not only that, but there were taps near the edge of the dance floor to top up for free. How sensible! Friendly punters, staff and police. Beautiful weather and fab music. if I had one negative, and it's very slight, it would be that the last dj didn't quite hit the mark with his music choices. Thanks for a great event Mardi Gras and best of luck with next weekend. x
'Consignment' is when an allocation of tickets are ring fenced for a particular sales channel or customer group. That means that those tickets can not be sold as part of the general release of tickets.
I should imagine (from past volunteer work with NMG) the 'consignment' is the parade volunteer tickets which are 'sold' on the parade briefing day (and distributed after the parade on saturday).
Parade briefing took place on the weekend just gone which means that if not all of the parade volunteers elected to purchase their parade volunteer ticket there would be some left to sell over to the general public.
It would make sense given the timings.
Glad to see that NMG are doing everything in their power possible to enable people to get tickets.
Yep I remember those days. Wasted great dancing time hanging around.
Now, if I'm there and it happens , great. If I miss it big deal. That sardinesville thing was very claustrophobic when waiting for Kylie that year. Almost freaked out and never did it again. Was stuck on the dance floor and couldnt move. Luckily when Kylie came on calmed down.
These boots are made for dancing not standing and standing and waiting
Was the Harbour Party footprint reduced because of a smaller crowd? I would hate to think that people didn't support it this year. If anything people should have stopped going to the party when Iris Group was running it a below standard level... but it always seemed to sell out for them. NMG made a real attempt to fix the problems from previous years and if they didn't get a good turn out then I think the wrong people were being punished
countdown boy are you admitting you are actually the infamous "Troughman" ????? god i wish there was a doco about the trough..a family orientted/hsitorical perspective of course.*snicker*.hehe enjoy the last few days of the count..
Are you the same person whinging on about NMG not having their act together ?
GIVE IT UP.
No one can bitch about not getting a ticket. They have been on sale for ages.
Trouble with todays society is they wont take responsibility for the own actions ( or in-action ).
Is Mardi Gras the only event where scalpers are demanding big $'s for tickets ? NO! happens at most musical and sports events.
And before you post find out what consignment is. It can be ticktets allocated for an overseas group or more than likely for the volunteers/parade attendees etc. Heard they have had to cut down a bit on number of people in some groups so there are probably left over tickets that they can sell instead of giving away for free.
and whats with " the aim of the concert/event is not to sell out " ??????????????????? you will never get a job with a promotions company.
Again music/dance/sports events all hope to sell out !
To entertain properly in order to accommodate the attendees you have to go by the rules of the venue and guess what ? they have a LEGAL limit. Oh and its not
So get over your rant. Its so baseless its laughable.
The people selling these tix are probably the same losers who used tp stand outside FOX, before they worked out how to use ebay.
They're not from our community, this is a business for them and they would have bought these tickets ages ago and if the party had not sold out, they would have stood outside FOX flogging them off to some desperate individual for a price far less than what they are now.
The best thing to do would be to not buy from ebay or do the fake bid thing, which alot of people do nowadays as ebay do bugger all about scalping. Or you can wait for the next release of unwanted consignment or for the night when the scalpers will be foreced to stand outside FOX and as tix may still be available you'll have more bargaining power.
"BTW, the aim of a concert/event is not to "sell out", but rather to entertain by properly planning in order to accomodate as many people as possible in the confines of the venue. For a 21st or 30th you don't make provision for 10 people to come to the party"
There is not one promoter in the world who has the aim of not having a sold out event!
You are assuming (wrongly) that Mardi Gras has not negotiated all the extra space that the venue management will allow.
Personally I congratulate Mardi Gras for doing a fantastic job and for selling out a week in advance... Just like the first 20 Mardi Gras parties used to do!
Hopefully this person will get him/herself a ticket this week and stop these silly posts.
Ok..so the rumours were true re; new tickets..seeing this wall is THE place for ticket info..can anyone now give us the "juice" about when they will go on sale meaning the exact day..time..and method..online? queues?? phone?? hope someone can, as always at this place,..enlighten...

Your assumption that "some loser from Penrith" may be the beneficiary from scalping tickets is breathtakingly arrogant, narrow minded and pompous. Who's to say its not someone from "your community" within the confines of your salubrious surrounds who is profiting from these circumstances.
Also agree. Jayson was a bad choice for that party. Kate and Alex were just amazing and lots of fun. When Jayson started the mood and feel changed. It was like somebody turned off the fun and switched to serious ARQ/Shift music which in my opinion is not what the HP is all about.
With only days to go, the excitement is mounting...Oxford St is gay again with all the blow-ins from interstate and overseas. Rainbow flags are hanging in shop windows (apart from Starbucks - evil corporate chain - shareholders probably object to rainbow flags). Got some milk crates for the parade (scarce as hen's teet in the village at the mo) Swim got some lollies for the party. Dome DJ lineup looks set to rock my socks off (apart from my hero Sveta playing too early in the night)....
...All that could possibly ruin the night is if the only beer they're selling is that putrid, awful, awful, american stuff with the unpronouncable name they had at Fair day. That and if the other 19999 people forget to show up.
I don't know for sure but I suspect Saturday morning after final tally done. I also suspect, again don't know, that due to it being on party day it will be counter sales only. No phone or internet as they pulled phone and internet sales of Harbour on Saturday the day before. Just an educated guess and I expect boys will be queuing over night. Very un-gay to queue me thinks.
it was pretty obvious. jayson's music choice is nowhere close to what harbour party is about. neither any of the chosen previous years. kate, alex & scott are known for playing nice sunday sunset classy music. the last dj's music sounded cheap and commercial. this type of sound is usually delivered only at arq serving our western suburbs citizens.
overall great party, apart from the poor closing set dj choice.
Michelob is an official sponsor which is why you saw it at fair day along with 42 Below Vodka.
A little know fact is that New Mardi Gras do not make a single cent from the bar takings at Mardi Gras Party nor do they control what is sold. The venue management run the bars and thus take all the profit. They have existing arrangments in place with suppliers so unless Michelob is a sponser of Playbill you wont see it there.
Oh and if you don't like the bar prices please dont blame Mardi Gras!
or if just 10% of that 19999 decide the Hordern too fluffy for them and decide to head over to Dome for some harder stuff.
Thats been my biggest worry since the changed Hordern over to Trance.
Sure Trance will fill the Hordern just like Hard styles have in the past.
I just dont think Dome will cope.
It gets way too hot in there and gets too dangerous for your health.
But will be there with you
I's getting really exciting now with only three days to go. Weather will clear for a beautiful parade and party night. Bring it on Sydney.
Watch all those vistors start arriving in next few days and Friday night is gunna be a huge buzz on Oxford St.

So.... the offical Mardi Gras festival bar is upstairs @ Will & Tobys. Has anyone been up there? Nothing has really been done to the place. No MG signs - no MG staff, nothing for interstate or international guests to really know that they are actually at the offical festival bar. Its all a bit lacklustre really and it could have been great. It all seems like no real though has been put into it.
I disagree with most of the postings about the music at the harbour party and in defence of myself, a western suburubs citizen who did his first sleaze in 1989 and his first mardi gras in 1990, and in defence of jayson forbes for playing commercial/arq/midnight shift music I would think that's exactly what a sunday afternoon harbour party should be all about - boppy, happy, soul-uplifting music. I for one found the other djs too into deep heavy house more suited to a phoenix party and apart from jayson this year I thought the djs and music were better at last year's party.
p.s. I am not straight and I am not a ticket scalper but I do see things and the tea leaves never lie but now and again they get the timing wrong.
Here in Sydney, The Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras party & parade is coming up on Saturday and it is tradtionally a time for much drug taking. AcidJasmine brings timely advice to those people who choose to go down that path of wrongdoing and pain.....
...on the other hand the second floor of taxi club has been completely turned into Manacle. the decorations, friendly manacle staff, cheap drinks, even the spider web. ....and no one goes either.
whatever you do, you'll never win!
Manacle is at the Taxi everynight this week except for after the mardi gras parade and they boys have done a great job with the nightclub area. Check the manacle website for details as they have Bent this weekend at well.
I think one problem with Manacle is that they didn't advise anywhere that there was a covercharge. I was a bit surprised myself, but paid it anyway (my friend didn't want to so I paid for him too); only to enter a fairly empty space that we didn't want to stay in.

I for one loved my time at Harbour Party. Agreed I felt pretty eager to leave when the last DJ sent the music to a place I prefer never to visit, so I did But, I loved Scott Pullen's lighter summer beats, and then he jumped the pressure up a bit with some sexyfunky house. Kate and Alex always stars, rocked it to be sure.
It may have been disappointing to some that the attendance was lower than the past years, but Harbour Party (original) was never huge like the awful Azure events, and so I was more than pleased to see this event restored to its former fantastic self!
I danced, I flirted, I chatted, and everyone gazed at the twilight boat changeover as if it were the most astonishingly beautiful thing they'd ever seen. There was a very special and friendly vibe on Sunday, and the weather was perfection.
To those who missed out on the fun, worry less about taking piles of pills to parties, and think more about bringing your own special selves. You'll have fun!!!
See you next year... looking forward to a fun MG on Saturday!!!!!!!! Congratulations to the much criticised NMG Party Committees for rising to the challenge and proving all doubters totally wrong, and... ticketless! Those who missed out will learn not to be too cool for school in 2009! So you better work on extending the total capacity of Fox, even if we need to book out the carpark!!!
Can someone tell me if you have bought your members tickets can the member take the other person they bought the other ticket for into the members only areas or is that only available to the actual member.
Due to the massive growth in membership we’ve gone back to the drawing board and are pleased to announce that there will now be not one, not two but three Members Lounges at your Mardi Gras Party. Members Lounges will operate inside the RHI, Dome as well as an outside Marquee. The RHI and Dome Members Lounges come complete with their own bars and chill out space while the Members Marquee will feature three hot DJ’s playing just for you - Sandi Hotrod, Kitty Glitter and Dan Buhagiar.
Don’t forget, to gain access to the Member’s Lounges and Marquee you will need to show you wristband which you will only receive as you pass through the members express entrance to the party. We remind you that if any of the Members Lounges reach capacity entry may be restricted for safety reasons. Please note that there will be no Members Lounge in the Forum this year.
A few months ago, two boys were walking home after a night out. As they held hands they were set upon and one of them was left for dead. The assailants then rang his mother on his mobile phone to tell her that “We killed your faggot son”.
Craig and Shane come back to Oxford Street for the first time this Saturday and we ask you to show them your support. This time, 10,000 supporters behind them will form a Parade train 6km long.
The 2008 Chief of Parade is Margaret Cho, one of the most critically acclaimed comedians of our time. Leave the milk crates for the milko, get there early and travel by public transport.
well who is gonna tell MG that they bought a tkt at a premium knowing that it could be cancelled. There goes the $500 they spent on the tkt. Completely unenforceable condition of sale though i agree with the sentiment. Scalping has to be stopped and I hope police will move them on from the enterance area. I think it is digusting that gay boys would rip off other gay boys especially at MG time when we should be celebrating as a community.
The email says only tickets with "Members" are allowed through the members entrance. I checked mine and they both have "members" on them. Just make sure you and your friend go through the members entrance and get your wrist band.
Happy Mardi Gras!

In previous years, you can pretty much cross the parade route at the end of Moore Park Road where it meets Flinders up until about 6:30pm-7:00pm. Best is to go down Moore Park Road then across Flinders and take Bourke back up to Taylor Square.
Announcing details of a limited release of Party tickets. The tickets represent the unused amounts which we set aside for purchase by our volunteers after this week’s volunteer briefing days. These tickets are not an additional release and do not represent an increase to the current agreed capacity.
A strictly limited amount of full price and concession tickets will go on sale at NOON (Sydney time), Friday 29th February 2008 and will only be available through Ticketek outlets and the Ticketek hotline on 132 849. To reduce the risk of scalping, ticket sales will be limited to one per person and tickets will not be available for purchase over the internet. Please note that the allocation of member priced tickets has been exhausted. No member priced tickets will be available in this final allocation.
We also reminded party-goers of the dangers of purchasing tickets through eBay and other internet sites. New Mardi Gras does not agree with the scalping of tickets. It is a condition of purchase that Mardi Gras Party tickets may not be resold at a premium. We are currently working with our partners and are cancelling those tickets which we find are being resold at a higher price. If you have purchased a scalped ticket, you do so at your own risk and should be aware that it may have already been cancelled.
No tickets to Mardi Gras party will be available for sale on the door.
The wristbands for the Members Lounges (there will be three Lounges this year) are only available via the members entrance gates. If you're a member or have a member ticket that a member bought you and pass through the other gates you'll miss out. Here are the instructions from the Mardi Gras' email last night...
Members should use the members express entrance when you arrive at the party - just look for the signs. Only tickets with the word “members” printed on them will be allowed entry via these gates. If you are a member and have purchased a concession ticket you will need to bring your New Mardi Gras membership card with you to gain access. As you pass through we’ll give you a special wristband which is your ticket into the exclusive Members Lounges and Marquee.
We remind you that if any of the Members Lounges reach capacity entry may be restricted for safety reasons. Please note that there will be no Members Lounge in the Forum this year.
sadly for the first time in years I won't be there for the parade and party. we didn't come back this time and are battling a long winter instead. have a wonderful time everyone, 30 years and still going strong - yes it's all still relevant! Can't wait to read all your reviews and gossip. greetings and Happy Mardi Gras from zürich, xxx sk and flowers.
Excitement builds and so does the rumours.
So at midnight Kylie comes on and sings her new single "Wow" that she performed at the Brit Awards. She goes off and gets changed into those gold hotpants etc. Danni comes on and sings her single. Then rips her velcro top and skirt off to reveal a sort of leather girl rock girl look. Kylie comes back on and the both sing "Sisters are doing it for themselves".
At 2AM Cyndi Lauper sings an uptempo ballad, then "Girls just wanna have fun".
At 8AM Olivia sings "Physical" and finishes with "Xanadu" with confetti cannons going of in the last bar of music.
I work in the drug and alcohol field and quite a majority of arrests lately have been when there is a presence from Marijuana on the person suspected.
My suggestion is that if you don't want any potential problems with sniffer dogs anywhere in the city on Saturday night, do not smoke or have any marijuana prior to entering a venue. Those cute and cuddly labradors are quite good at sniffing the green happy herb however not so good at detecting other drugs.
Being in possession of illegal substances is a risk at anytime and no precautions can be totally foolproof.
That being said, Happy 30th Mardi Gras to all my brothers and Sisters, see you under the mirrorball!!!
I think the price of tickets on ebay has already crumbled and lots people won't honour their bids.
To those that are ripped off by scalpers on ebay by fake or cancelled tickets; I hope they will pursue a complaint because from what I understand, they might be able to get their money back if the seller is on paypal.
don't bet on it.
ebay washes their hands on these situations where ver possible - unless they have paid by paypal and even then its a drama.
you would be surprised at how many loopholes their are - until you get stung.
Just heard a rumour from a mate who works at "Direct flights to Malta"..Nana (Mous) has been sighted hopping (sorry..wheeled) onto a Cessna @ Athens International...She should be here in 6mths...ready to sing "Kumbya" at RHI....PS gotta love those Kamahl ads for the WWE on FOX8..i wish Randy Orton was coming to Mardi Gras...smirk..

Doesnt really matter if it rains, after the ball we had at Lismore for Trop Fruits, in fact it helped us keep cool and we got free water to boot. Nothing like the slippery slide in a mud bath with friends(or strangers)on the grass.
Mind you I'm starting to think I won't be catching any shows in the RHI because it will be jam packed all night, VERY hot (probably dangerously so simply due to the crowd), and to stand there for hours for just 5 minutes of ONJ is crazy.
Small excerpt from an interview about their Mardi Gras performance...
So what’s featuring in your sets at the moment?
It’s changing all the time as far as tracks go, but the main thing for us is to rock the crowd, they are the ones who matter and if they’re happy then that’s the job done. But we try to make it as uplifting as possible, so expect ‘hands in the air’ with a lot of quality tunes and we always play a classic or two.
This is wonderful news but almost too stressful for words too, as long as we don't know what time and where, what the hell are we supposed to do!?!?!? I can't cope! If I miss Kylie, there'll be some serious tanties thrown! :D
WOWOWOWOW!!! Words can no longer describe how excited i am!!! Not getting my hopes up about kylie... But who am i KIDDING!!! LOL I was one of the lucky few that just got a ticket this morning... I bought mine MONTHS ago but had it stolen from me recently... Unfortunate yes... but No chance i was missing out tho! I lined up for hours!! Cant wait!!
Thanks NMG..Thanks for trumpeting the 3oth anniversary...thanks for releasing "5" extra tickets for the nearly 1000's who missed out this morning...the reason why this year is a sell-out is only due to the 30th...nothing more..its not about getting back to where it was..it will never be that and after missing out today on tix i hope it never does..you should have booked a bigger venue..made a bigger space...as a gay person i want to celebrate with my community..but on sat nite i wont be able to due to the 'sell out" and baby NMG has sold out bigtime on the community.. i know for a fact heaps of straights are going..so b4 anyone says "tough titties" im saying a lot of straights have soaked up a lot of tix...I will never be associated with this "new wave" of mardi gras its become like everything else..its a disgrace to the old 78ers who didnt need ticketek or the words "sold out" or barricaded spaces where only those who had a ticket could enter...if this is what being gay is about in 2008 forget it im outta here.. outta pinkboard and just out..i feel like dorothy when she gets home and realises it was only a dream....and Marcus B when u read this think of the people you have let down bigtime this year..shame on you....and dont worry there are heaps of people out there who think the same...the people who partied on the cliffs last week had the right idea..its time for people to take their pleasure into their own hands and not have it regulated..fenced off..ticketed.."orgainised"...the age of the death of fun is rampant in 2008...
MATE IF IT WAS THAT IMPORTANT TO YOU TO ATTEND THE PARTY WHY DIDNT YOU BUY A TICKET WEEKS AGO! we pay for the party to have an organised space where we can safely party (unlike on the side of a cliff)!!! And as for straight people going, how can u discriminate when the very thing your screaming for is equal rights. Many straight people want to go support and party with their mates and their mates want them there too. its not a closed community i think the support of staright people is great, isnt that what we want??
Sounds like someone has sour grapes, you knew damn well how long tickets have been on sale for and if you could not be bothered to save beforehand like many people would have shame on you.....I bet if you had got your ticket things would be different.
To all those people who want to winge and bitch about not getting their ticket, you have no one to blame but yourself, so take some responsibility for for own actions and stop the blame game just because you are angry at yourself. GROW UP........
Sold out after only two tickets were released at an outer suburban Ticketek agency early this afternoon. Rest of queue waited patiently for over half an hour while processing took place but continually unable to get through. I might be wrong but lucky two did not appear remotely gay but then again I might be wrong.
So for the last 4 months these tickets have been available, have you been on the moon or sitting around with your fingers up your bum????
People that missed out, I'm sorry to be cruel is nothing more than yourself to blame.
No venue is unlimited!!! So a bigger venue what happens if that sells out?? Your stupid comment, makes me laugh and laugh and be much happier that someone so negative and jealous will not ruin everyones party experience on the night!
Have fun wathcing TV, the rest of us 20,000 + organised poofs and lesbians will be having a ball!
Back in the early-mid 90's when the parties were supposedly at their peak they would sell out 6 weeks in advance. There is no surprise that the 30th anniversary party sold out, and your sour grapes over missing out will do nothing to dampen the spirits of those who bought early, expecting that the anniversary bash would sell out, as it has done.
To all of my fantastic gay brothers and sisters in Sydney and all of Australia, I want to wish you a fantastic Mardi Gras celebration. Unfortunately, I won't be there to celebrate with you this year, but, please let the Party go on and do it as only YOU can do it. You are all wonderful and please enjoy the festivities that you have so uniquely created. I'll be checking in to read the reports of the weekend and to relive my great memories of past Mardi Gras celebrations.
It's an interesting self-obsessed age we live in when people leave it to the last minute to buy a ticket and then attack Mardi Gras when they miss out.
It's called personal responsibility.
And I have to question how much you really wanted to be at the party (that you knew was going to attract a lot of interest) if you left it to the last week to buy a ticket. The Mardi Gras email updates which anyone can receive for free were warning for some time that tickets were selling fast and they even issued warnings in the days before the party sold out to let people know.
Next time get your ticket early like the rest of us!
Before I start I want to say that I bought my mardi gras ticket 6 weeks ago, so I am not personally affected.
However, This morning I was out at Blacktown on some personal business. At about 11.30am I was in the shopping complext at Westpoint Blacktown doing my stuff when I came up with the snap idea that I might pop up to the Hoyts complex on level 4 and see if I could pick up another Mardi Gras ticket as a favour for a mate of mine who lost his ticket a week or so back.
Upon arriving in the Hoyts foyer where the Ticketek Agency is at 11.35am I was greeted with a line of about 25 people who were all waiting for the chance to buy a MG ticket.
Let me say this - Most of these people were clearly NOT members of "our" community. Definitely not the type of people that should be getting tickets ahead of gays and lesbians who missed out.
Anyway, I waited in line until 12.00, then the Ticketek system froze up and by 12.15 all tickets were sold out and from what I can tell only the first person in line got a ticket. Personally I thought that was good karma that these people missed out, i hope more poofs and lesbians got tickets from other outlets.
The point of this post is to debate the appropriateness of Ticketek to handle ticket sales for NMG given that its open slather with the straight community as well as the dirty fuc-ing scalpers.
In an ever changing world I suppose we need Ticketek to handle this for NMG but I for one would suggest its HIGH TIME that our party ticket sales go back to a members only can purchase system. At least that will stop the scalpers and it also will stop innappropriate persons who have no connection or affiliation with "our" community from attending "our" dance party.
Was just down at Entertainment Quarter. The RHI had a number of huge air-conditioning units outside with ducts going in through the windows. Looks like they will be cooling the RHI down.
Also the Members Marquee was being set up next to the Forum and looked huge. I think Members will be pleasantly surprised with the size of this new space.
Meanwhile Channel 10 just had a news story on Mardi Gras and showed a glimpse inside the RHI. Looks like its in keeping with the Discotarium theme with mirror balls throughout and a giant one as a centrepiece.
Unfortunately if you hold an event at Fox you use Ticketek. Its all part of the deal now. Until we locate an alternate space to hold MG parties we are stuck with it. There is no where else that this type of party can be held. Homebush is an option but I don't think it would work.
If we are "Stuck" with ticketek then NMG seriously need to re-consider that Ticket purchases are for members only. It might not cut out all of the scalpers and undesirables, but it will certainly get rid of a fair chunk of them
One of the greatest questions that many face is what to wear to the party. Here are some suggestions
- jeans and t-shirt
- jeans and t-shirt and a fake tan
- jeans and t-shirt
- topless with jeans and t-shirt shoved down the back
- jeans and t-shirt
- ripped jeans and t-shirt
- jeans and t-shirt
To all those who so joyously have had a great time dissing the words i posted..i would have loved to have paid for a ticket weeks ago..but unlike you cashed up people.. i am a concession card holder and did not have anywhere near the money they are asking and was saving.. its taken me ages to save enough to get a ticket...sure im pretty disappointed about missing out in fact im devastated..but after thinking about it..a couple of points i wanna raise..u bet there are straights at this party tommorow and they are taking my place..i dont need to get straights approval..i really LOVE places where they are NOT..because everyday they are in my face and everyday they OWN every space..it has nothing to do with inclusion i'm just sick of a hetro world..i love being in GAY ONLY spaces...its called having a break...NMG should have really taken on extra planning due to the 30th anniversary..its not like past years.its rampant everywhere.. since when has media have to pay for accredidation??? (re media who wish to cover parade)that is an outrageous ask... since when do gay groups have to limit parade participant sizes???.. the concept of being a NMG member would have put paid to the scalpers and hetro's gaining tickets that should have gone to the right people...the F%$^#! you jack attitude is rampant here..so when you are on the floor tommorow night if you can, think of not just me but of the hundreds of others that missed out and when u see the straights there tommorow nite think about the places they have taken...im leaving this discussion..this weekend is going to suck bigtime..i hate being poor...
I second this...also from San Francisco and was at the 20th anniversary, which will go down as one of the most magical nights of my life thus far. Have a wonderful time pinkboard readers, you're quite lucky and in for a wild ride! James in SF
For me, it's not only whether to wear jeans and tshirt but which sneakers to wear with my jeans and tshirt! Will it be the green and gold Asics Tigers or the blue and yellow Asics Tigers or perhaps the blue Chuck Taylors or no, hang on, the black Chuck Taylors...
Decisions, decisions! Love it.
At this wonderful time of year please spare a moment to reflect on the many millions of our brothers and sisters who live in societies around the world where being gay is not tolerated.
Scottie Weaver was one such person who recently in Missisippi at the tender age of 18 was strangled, stabbed, mutilated and set on fire.
People cry for not having a ticket to the party.
Around the world hundreds if not thousands are still being denied their humanity or worse being murdered in the name of religion or social norms.
This party does not just mean having a good time it also symbolises our determination to celebrate life in the face of discrimination, brutality and death.
In 1945 Auschwitz ended the Jewish holocaust. But for us it still continues!
In memoriam of those we have lost.
Hi chaps. For the second year in a row I will be missing out on our marvellous, mythical monumental Mardi Gras. Distance issues, you know how it is.
But as before, I would love to be there on the night mixing it up with my family of choice, showing the world that we ain't going away. May your outfit be great, may it last the whole night. May you honour your friends, those with you and those who we have lost. May all your mates be in the exact meeting place at exactly the right time. May every single person hear their favourite song (mine would be Mary Kiani's 'I Imagine'). May you have a dance for me. And may you fall in love, whether it be for the first or umpteenth time.
HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!!!!

Oh please. I wont give a thought to you with with woe is me attitude.
You said you started saving up ? when ? its you not NMG who needed the extra planning.
NMG have done a wonderful job.
Oh and , I'm not rich either but I saved for this party and never time it close. I'm organised.
And ummmmmmmmmmmmmm you dont need straights approval ? where the #$@#$ does that come from ?
I will be dancing with a group of my straight friends and will really enjoy that time with them. We are FRIENDS and sexuality does not come into the picture at all. Actually I get way too many hugs from them than I do my gay friends. I love them , I love being out with them as much as I love being out with my gay friends.
I am sorry you can only survive in a totally gay world, it is your choice but dont ram home your choices to us. I would never want to live in a totally gay word and that is my choice.
and as for the line about the media have to pay for
accredidation ( spelt accreditation ) you have so lost me on that one.
I wish to discuss your article regarding selling MG Party tickets to an appearance based buyer. It is interesting that you label people as clearly not members of our community based on their appearance. This attitude of indifference is completely biased, ignorant, stereotypical and unjust.
It may be a good time at this moment to reflect on what those people who had gone before us in 1978 were marching for? I question whether they were marching for a community to look a certain way or actually were they in fact marching for rights and recognition of equality.
This stereotypical opinion that exists within our community infuriates me as I believe it is the exact opposite of what we are trying to achieve, what the 30th Anniversary Mardi Gras is all about! This is a celebration of what we have achieved and just how far we need to go in the future.
This example is of ties pulling us apart rather than bringing us together, we need unity not uniformity. It is with this post I ask all of us to look at what has been said and reflect on it as we approach tomorrow night.
Let’s all join together no matter what we look like, celebrate and party!
Happy 30th Mardi Gras

So you missed out on a ticket to the 30th Anniversary Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party & you only have yourself to blame.
To pick out an individual & attempt to make him look &/or feel bad for being partly responsible for an event that has reached it's capacity shows your arrogance for not buying a ticket when the opportunity was available to you.
To pretend that the '78ers' back your argument is purely laughable.
PLEASE ACCEPT RESPONIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN INACTION.
Happy Mardi Gras everyone! (including all those that missed out on tickets to the party).
I have it on good authority that Sinead O'Connor was just trying to throw everyone off the scent with her remarks in last weekend's paper. She's performing The Loco-motion in The Dome at 3 -- don't miss it!
a close member of my family has been diagnosed with a very nasty thing. i wish i could swap for your problems. you have such a great and easy life. i wish i could be chosing shoes for mg instead of looking after a close one in the hospital. oh well, hope you choose well! mwah
Happy Mardi Gras everyone. Enjoy the parade and party tonight and have a wonderful weekend celebrating who we are, cause its all about us this weekend.
And take a little time to reflect on our brothers and sisters of days gone by who by their actions (some small and some big) helped in achieving the acceptance we have today. The batton has been handed to us to take the fight forward for true equality.
Have fun and take care of each other.

"Just back from Fox Studios - saw the Kylie rehearsal - IN THE HORDEN - it's gonna blow peoples minds"
Oh no! I am already confused enough about where to be. I mean I love trance so I want to spend all night in the Hordern. Then I hear Hex Hector has made some brand new amazing mixes especially for his set so I want to be there. Then of course I want to see every show.
Now I am told there will be 4 shows in the RHI and 1 in the Hordern so now I am wondering is this latest rumour true or all you just pulling our legs... what if it turns out to be Nana Mouskouri after all?
Damn Mardi Gras.... you've just done too good a job this year!
We decided to go out for a drink last night at around 10.00am. Oxford Street was going off!!! We only wanted one or two just to feel the vibe but every gay venue had a queue. The only one we forgot to check was Slide. There were so many gays and lesbians we had fun just walking around! I hope the usual unfriendly Friday crowds felt just a little bit out of place, just so they know how they've made us feel over summer.
Tonight is going to be so special, I can't wait. I'm in the parade for the first time in years and close to the front. Will be able to watch some of the parade then come home to change in to my fabulous fluro outfit and off to party!

What beautiful fresh day.
We are not into the home stretch and should give some thought to what today is really about. It's not about getting wired on drugs and partying, something that NMG sometimes forgets. It's about legitimising gays into the broader community via equal rights. It's about freedom of expression. It's about pride. It's about not forgetting about those that are lonely and themselves are struggling with their sexuality due to family or societal pressure. It's about giving support to others finding it tough. Above all, about leaving the next generation a legacy, like those before us left us.
Happy Mardi Gras Australia.
hey Guys and Gals !!
I can't believe that it is here!Happy Mardi Gras to you all
I have waited for soooooo long. Now I need to know which hall to be in for Kylie, I do not want to miss her!!!
I just found out on Friday arvo that I am being chucked out of the room I am renting and am feeling really down. so I need to know where to be for Kylie!! She will take away all my cares!
Don't you just hate to see Fred Nile wearing out his old knees praying for rain that will never come. It's such a perfect day... (but all the people carrying on about Kylie shows are telling fibs). The international acts are Livvie and Cyndi (Lauper, not Pastel). There are four shows in the RHI, all involving live singing, and one amazing tech show in the Hordern. Plus you won't want to miss the Carpenters from Kempsey in the Videodrome at 1.30am. See you on a dancefloor somewhere.
