Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2003 #2 Graffiti Wall
In 48 hours Sydney will again be the focus of the world with the 25th Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. We are celebrating 25 years of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual and queer culture known as Mardi Gras.

First the parade will head up Oxford St with over 140 floats and thousands of marchers, dancers, walkers and floaters. There will be many many thousands of people watching this incredible celebration. There will be millions of sequins on Ron Muncasters costumes alone.

Then comes the party. Up to 17,000 people will spend the night dancing up a storm, meeting new friends and having a great time. An incredible night of fun.

Then comes the depression because the incredible has given way again to the mundane. There will be whinging, both on Pinkboard and in the press. "I hated the music." Please don't take it to heart. It is just the low after the high.

25 years of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual & queer culture

Forecast for Saturday night Sunday - Fine with fresh winds - 20 to 25C. Should be good for both parade and party.

Personally, I'm in the mood just to go out and have a damn good time at the MG Party, and let the bullshit that has gone on be temporarily suspended. Hope there are quite a few others sharing the feeling.

Today they just anounced Grease 3 with Kylie playing the Daughter of Olivia was about to start production. So the rumour of her doing a Zanadu , may not be that far from the truth.

Regional Queen - Fri 28 Feb 2003 16:43:08
Kerri-anne mentioned on her morning show that she had a big weekend planned with the "boys" - All along we have a gay Icon sitting around in Woollhara (and the dressing room at Channel 9) and we did'nt know it. Come on guys you gotta admit the girls got glamour(bit rough around the edges and a bit pushy but shes got it)can't wait till sunday morning to see what she does with it.by the way she is doing the closing number for those concerned about times - don't miss it.
- Fri 28 Feb 2003 17:19:42
hmmm dunno about those show rumours, but one I can confirm is Keith Richards taking time out from Rolling Stones tour to do a special "Accoustic Quaalude" performance at my house on sunday night. forget queer nation etc .. this will be the pace to be.
Mr Panties - Fri 28 Feb 2003 18:53:19
Alison Moyet is definitely in town and making an appearance at HUM on sunday so that's almost a certainty she's performing.
- Fri 28 Feb 2003 19:59:55
it's MG time.. Joh Bailey's ad's back for Sunsilk : noticed how instead of "yes i am ,it's okay" he now mumbles something like "yes i am, ay". WHY??

Ok - Kerri-anne is not an international diva yet its not the first time Mardi Gras has "exagerated" just slightly about the star acts provenance - remember the Sheena Easton debacle.

Excellent party, Luke Leal was brilliant, as were all the DJ's.

Shows/schmows ! but understand others enjoy them. Hordern was not the same with them mixing Dome and Hordern together. Music was either great or manic
but thats my opinion. Hope Dome is open for Sleaze so can go back to the 3 distinct sytles of music for each hall. RHI looked great. Could have done without the centre bit in dance floor of Hordern but overall a great party and great crowd.
Thank you - Sun 2 Mar 2003 14:44:07
What a great party. The music was great. Suzanne Palmer was amazing. But what happened to Kerri Ann???
BJT - Sun 2 Mar 2003 19:01:48
Sensational parade. Political and punchy, building on that return to community spirit that was so obvious with last year's parade and Remembrance. Congratulations to everyone who pulled it together so fast, Jess, Committee, and all the thousands of volunteers and participants.
And thank you.
- Sun 2 Mar 2003 19:28:59
Does anyone know the song for the last performance in the RHI? A feel good number, perfect finish to the night. And a grreat night it was!
Happy - Sun 2 Mar 2003 19:53:55
Excellent party, one of the best ever for me. The crowd was deliciously friendly, not too big, not too small. Loved most of the music. C-Vox was good. Didn't see any other shows and would love to hear details. The impromptu men's space in the Hordern came to an abrupt halt in the early hours - I saw two policemen nearby. Congratulations to NMG. A really fabulous effort. Nothing about it felt cheap or tacky. A quality party all round. Just one suggestion. I know it costs money but can we have the Dome back next time as a dance hall? It's always been my favourite.
PaulDiamondo - Sun 2 Mar 2003 20:11:36
Great party, Mardi Gras.Mandy Rollins rocked my world again in the Hordern.Well done girl.
- Sun 2 Mar 2003 21:45:30
fun party - ticketing needs to be thought about Mardi Gras cannot be turned into a freak show for Backpackers and Straights. Bring back the member ticketing process
Stephen Kidman - Sun 2 Mar 2003 23:09:33
Fantastic party!!!!!!!!!!!!

Enjoyed it much better than last year, however the open admittance thru ticketek seemed to 'lower the standards' - not so many got dressed up for the occasion.

As far as dance space is concerned, my guess is the centre DJ bit on the Hordern dance floor was conceieved when they thought not many would attend the party. Thought the Dome chill out space was an excellent idea.
Nonetheless it wasn't crowded anywhere, RHI included (last year RHI was so packed u couldn't move, and was like a sauna)
gh - Sun 2 Mar 2003 23:15:07

Fab Party, Fab Parade. Thank you Steve Clayton and Michael Woodhouse and et al for putting your heads on the line. We need Mardi Gras. It enhances and enriches us. Even the hand-bag girls at the party semi fitted in :))
egional Queen - Sun 2 Mar 2003 23:20:08
RHI looked great but sounded terrible. Hordern looked cheap and tacky and the music was generally alright except for the hardhouse rave shit that was playing after 3am. I cried when I saw that Dome had seats in the middle of the dancefloor. what a waste ! and what the hell were those shows ? who was the fat chick with the bad hair cut in the hordern ? she looked like a soft metalic clam shell
Crystal Conners - Mon 3 Mar 2003 00:09:47
So who did the shows? And any further news on the "mens space".
PaulDiamondo - Mon 3 Mar 2003 00:16:58
Who performed?
curious - Mon 3 Mar 2003 00:27:13
Was it just me or did the music all seem the same style from the RHI to the Horden, to a bit more alt in the Dome. The queues to get into GSpot/City Live were indicative of the better music on the whole from in there. I hope people realise that not everyone likes to dance to trance all night! Maybe thats why the RHI wasn't so crowded, to heavy a music style!
The lighting in the RHI was really good this year. sound in the Horden seemed a bit weak and the RHI was too muddy in the lower end. Liked the whole outdoorsy feel to the event despite the wind.
What was the go with Velocity - under 18's - being cancelled late in the piece. Did anyone see the 100 or so young people left high and dry by a poor effort by some of the board to support it, those youth waiting for a party that wasn't on. This was the low point of the whole weekend!

Great party with a good vibe & friendly crowd. My favourite bit was dancing in the little tent between RHI & Hordern after the sun came up. YAY!!!!!!!!!!!
davo - Mon 3 Mar 2003 09:52:27
Thank you NMG. What a fantastic party and effort. The contrast of the look-and-feel of the Horden and RHI was excellent, still need to work on the sound in the RHI though as there were definitely deaf spots. Tony Svehla and Mandy Rollins were excellent, and the speakers around the centre ensured the sound was fantastic all around. Paul Goodyear & Alex Taylor, as usual, you were champs and you played to the crowd unbelivably well. May all the parties model this one in the future. Thank you.
- Mon 3 Mar 2003 10:13:46
I couldn't make it to the party this year, please give us more news on the music, crowd, and shows (who performed etc).
Hope you all had a great night!
missed the fun and frivolity - Mon 3 Mar 2003 12:36:17
I thought the party was fantastic....maybe it was partly cos my expectations weren't quite so high, maybe I wasn't so tired after the last few years of overly crowded and overly-long parades (I mean that in the nicest possible way), maybe it was the e's...but anyway I had an excellent night entirely in the RHI....loved the music so much....very very danceable....oh and thanks craig for being so affectionate early in the night!
Does anyone know the name of the song that was used in the final 10.00am show?

Who the hell was responsible for the styling of c-vox's hair??
bad hair night - Mon 3 Mar 2003 18:17:02
kev, the song in the final show was "Never Give Up" - Yolanda Adams, Mike Rizzo mix. I thought it was great, a very touching way to end the party.
Loved It - Mon 3 Mar 2003 18:20:49
Great party. Growd was very good, I saw no trouble. The three key venues with the three outdoor pockets allowed for great interaction as well as a chill-out for the more 'intensive' inner spaces.

Who said denim was the dress code? Or was it that Sydney temperatures dropped 3degrees and everyone needed to rug up!

Congratulations to the whole party Team, the volunteers and NMG committee.

From the barman to the onlooker; from the Volunteer Officials to the Board Member; from the Gay Participant to the Straight Supporter and Friend - Saturday night proved that the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Community (and it's liberal definition now) are the strongest on earth.

After the 3 recent "Gay" financial disasters, we needed a win. Sydney took back what is rightfully hers - Our Mardi Gras - by the Community for the Community. Let's keep it that way, nurture her, develop her sensibly, and never, ever let her get possessed by Machiavellian people and concepts again.

Congratulations everyone - we bloody well did it, despite the despots.

C-Vox & Suzanne Palmer ! was MG sponsored by Star69 records ? maybe Twisted America can sponsor next years party & send out someone that can actually sing like Celeda. and ... .Buck Naked saved the party from being really bland

I have been to 15 MG Parties and this was the first where I was uncomfortable as a Leather person. People hassled me on several occasions and this has never happened before.

A comfortable place to sit and chill would have been good - we are not all 21-year-old speed freaks wanting to dance the night away. I don't spend so much money and effort to dress well to be expected to sit in gutters and dirty bleacher steps.

NMG need to recognise that although we may all be GLBT, we do like to congregate as distinct groups based on our interests and provide space where we can do this.

Maybe it got better later on but I was over being pushed and leered at by 2:30. Sorry I could not wait to hear Lloyde and Chip - they may have improved the music.

What was the name of the party held in the Hordern the Saturday after Mardi Gras in about 1990/91? It was run by Richard Weiss I think and there was industrial equipment as props. Name begins with a S (I think).

I'm abit confused about the reason to your discomfort (i'm not denying it however). was it that as a leather person you felt hassled by younger queens who aren't into the leather scene (or perhaps even being an older person)? or was it that straight punters hassled u?

just wanted to clarify the reasons so that people are clear on what happened and thus are better able to rectify it.
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 10:47:14

Sorry to hear that leather person was hassled, I comfortably wore leather openly and proudly, just shorts, harness etc... I felt no hassle, there were quite a few Leather boys about. I found the party just great and recon they did an excellent job. Sad to see the inevitable changes though. Police in pairs wandering through the crowd, I found their presence a little offensive (not them themselves, they were cool, although I see they stopped some sexual activity in the Horden) Sad also to see the lights on in the Dome with tables and chairs... was kinda a nice feeling in there but I sure missed the heavy leather sweaty crowd that used to gather there in years gone by, not to mention troughman in the bogs. Gosh... No Sex Places either, too bad for this old leather tart. Of course when your eyes meet across the room and guys will do what guys have got to do you'll both find a way... so all was not lost. Damn... what *was* his name. All in all I have to rate the whole deal up there as 8/10 maybe 9/10.

Big ups to Mr Flynn! G-spot grooved and was actually sexy. Funk hiphop soul and rock! The rest was pretty banging, except for the kill-joy vibe in the dome. Seats! Pity the up and comming djs having to play in a dagwood-dog van. The shows were a bit lacking in production and talent, you got to get out more often. All in all a fun party, good energy from the punters, but please try and diversify the line up. Seems that all believed the party flatlined from 3pm onwards.
a good effort! - Tue 4 Mar 2003 11:22:25
I felt uncomfortable because of comments and being pushed into (when people could have easily avoided walking into me). I hate to say that it was straight people, however I suspect that they were (sorry, maybe all vanilla people look straight to me now!) I felt like some sort of freak show and had no where to go to escape and relax into the party.

I guess I found the general behaviour of some people pretty off. To have my ass grabbed whilst walking along irks me, and statements like "nice tits", "did you see that!", "check that one out" are just rude. I don't want to hear their thoughts so they should keep them to themselves. I don't have high expectations of party attendees any more however I was not afforded somewhere at MG that I could enjoy the party with my type.

The party made me remember that as a leather person I am on the fringe and extreme and sadly that general GLBT parties are not for me. So if one of the objectives of NMG was to foster inclusiveness I felt, for me, it failed.
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 11:39:32

Sorry to hear of your uncomfortable experiences Mr Leatherman, I too wore leather, short leather kilt, harness, jock strap etc, and thought the crowd was pretty good, agree that some people can be a little forward by grabbing you on the arse etc, but don't take it to heart. You probably looked HOT.

Agree that a little better seating could be a benefit, (sitting on the ground with a jock strap under your kilt can be uncomfortable! But hey I wore that attire so had to put up with it!).

All in all I thought it was one of the better recent parties. Thought Mandy Rollins was fantastic as usual.

Thanks all see you next year.

We all seem to have different opinions - but i think the music got way better after 3(am not pm) Mr."a good effort!"

it was a wicked party with wicked music all night though but the rhi sounded gluggy..

Dear Mr Leather Man
truely also i am sorry u were hassled

but to say "The party made me remember that as a leather person I am on the fringe and extreme and sadly that general GLBT parties are not for me. So if one of the objectives of NMG was to foster inclusiveness I felt, for me, it failed"

means u blame (?) NMG ? NO ?
how can they be blamed for a few random blow-outs? bad elements are at every party ? everyone checks everyone out..me thinks we all are on show to ourselves are we not?
also not trying to make light of your hasslement but i think you must of been in an unfortunate moment in time...
i hate hearing these things - its so wrong - i wish the world was more tolerant..

even so u must be hot stuff to get all those compliments...
big luv - Tue 4 Mar 2003 14:14:49

Yup... I guess once it's open to the general public what is normal in our own circles becomes somewhat of an attraction to straights and the "freak" show syndrome raises it's ugly head. Actually, that's always been the case for the parade anyways. And being a public rather than a private party now necessitates the police presence. But still... seems like Mardi Gras couldn't survive without the general opening up to the wider community, well that's what we're led to believe. Leather Pride seems to survive though. I fear MGs become too generalised and doesn't offer a gay leather poof too much anymore. while I enjoyed the party I'll probably skip it from now on and stick with Inquisition only from now on. But that's me, if the New Mardi Gras is what the general gay community want... and it works, so be it.

I walked past one leather guy at the party who was absolutely gorgeous and, call me old fashioned, but I thought it was okay to make complimentary comments at the MG party, and from the size of the smile he flashed me, obviously he agreed. (It can't have been you of course). If anyone ever said "nice tits" about me (and I think it happened once in 1993 in the RHI), I certainly wouldn't think them rude. I always thought the MG party was about strutting your stuff, whatever you're into, and having the buzz of hearing other people's reactions to your look. On the very rare occasion I've ever had anyone say anything nasty to me at the party, I've just flashed them a big smile: works wonders! Why as a leather queen you would automatically expect to shrink into invisibility at an event like the MG party is beyond me. You gotta wear jeans and a T-shirt for that, darl, and there were way too many of those on Saturday night as it was!
nice-ish tits - Tue 4 Mar 2003 14:26:35
I would like to complain that I was NOT grabbed on the arse once!
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 14:44:09
It seems weird to me that when Mardi Gras looked like not happening, most people were upset cos of the possible loss of the parade, yet nobody's even talking about it on this wall. I don't live in Sydney and couldn't make it for MG, there was no TV broadcast this year, and on the news here on Sunday night there was about 10 seconds of it, and I can't find any pics of it...did anybody see it????
out of towner - Tue 4 Mar 2003 14:55:02
Why are you assuming this was a leatherMAN? I thought it sounded more like a leatherdyke's party experience. After getting verbally abused by yobbos in passing cars for walking down Oxford St in our leathers, I am not surprised to hear of the bad attitude this person copped at the party. I guess with the absence of The Dome as the default leather venue (for dancing, not lounging) leatherfolk were more spread out. Maybe for next time you need to get a party posse together, and hang out with each other. I don't think it was the party organisers fault for not catering to your specific needs. Sorry you had sad party though. Prolly should have come to Black instead/as well.
Evil Twin - Tue 4 Mar 2003 14:55:23
Big luv and Mitch
I am glad that you had a great time - as I said this is the first time in 15 years that I have felt uncomfortable at a MG - and that is why I was so dissapointed and a bit bewildered at the experience. By the way I am a woman and perhaps that is why I copped it a bit different.

If only the comments were complementary, rather that irritating I would have welcomed them. The comments that got up my nose were not stating how hot I looked but more how freaky/odd/derogatory. I would most likely have felt better if they had not have happened so frequently when I first arrived, I just don't have the tolerance myself anymore to stay somewhere I feel uncomfortable. I am the first to check people out but you sould respect them - I have never gone up to someone in jeans and t-shirt and hasseled them about their inability to look stylish - I would have been a very busy girl on Saturday night with that philosopy!!

I don't blame NMG for the people's behaviour - just feeling a bit sad that I had a crap night and went home very early (also no trade!). I do blame them however for inadequate seating. For $100 I expect to sit when I want to not with my bare ass on dirt and gum. I would have also preferred if they killed the shows and paid the DJ's.
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 15:17:38

why would you have preferred if they paid the DJs? would that have made a difference to how they performed on saturday night?
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 16:14:52
dear "out of towner" the parade hasnt mattered for years to most locals. it seems that only interstate or rural people participate in it. most of the locals I know have never missed a party, but havent watched or been in the parade for 10+ years.
politcs = Zzzzz.. - Tue 4 Mar 2003 16:19:34
They should have paid the DJs - they paid all the other creative elements, ie scenic designers. Yes I do think if you pay a DJ then you have better control over what they play and ensure that the same song is not played by every DJ as you give them a mood to create at a specific time and place.

DJ's don't cost much anyway in relative terms to other party expenses.

If i wanted to hear amatures play then I should have had the option of not paying for a ticket!
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 16:29:12

Loved the sound in the horden! RHI suited the music. But really! What was that mistake of the shows??? Note to mardi gras, try the big day out next year. Get inspired!
All in all well done! Straight gays, bent heteros, frigid couples, ugly sluts, fuury ladys, smooth leathermen... whatever the label, 17,000 people came together to dance anmd have a good time - all in the name of "gay and lesbian" It wouldnt happen in Brisbane, Bagdad, Dublin, Kansas, Bangkok, or many other cities of the worlds

Really enjoyed skating as a part of Foreplay again this year.
The crowd really enjoy our 'wings'.
Though waiting for the road to be closed got a bit tiring. Thems the breaks.
I think we may be famous in Japan after so many tourists took our photo while we were waiting to go on! ;-)

"freak show" feeling seems to be a common theme that needs to be addressed.
StephenKidman - Tue 4 Mar 2003 17:45:53
Any info on numbers? I would guess 10,000 max. Queues for the cloakroom and toilets were well down on usual. I was sorry that the Dome wasn't its usual sleazy, dark self but it was probably the right decision as crowds elsewhere would have been even smaller. And some refuge from the cold wind was most welcome as it happened. I thought the atmosphere and people were just terrific. The police weren't new. They've always wandered around in pairs as I recall. I do presume though that they stopped the spontaneous playzone at 3am or so. Did people mind the smaller, less elaborate shows (I only saw one)? I didn't. I will certainly attend next year's party.
PaulD - Tue 4 Mar 2003 18:32:06
I was at the party in harness, shorts collar, hands tied behind my back on the end of a leash for most of the night and I felt right at home. All response to that was positive. from all circles I will admit people did dress down for the night but it went with the urban loose theme they had going this year.
Don't forget a whole new breed of people put that party on this year, under a very tight budget and time limit. Things can be reworked to suit our community event, the new framework is established lets use it and create what we want
- Tue 4 Mar 2003 18:38:10
Tue 4 Mar 2003 16:29:12

Did the scenics people get payed? i thought that there were only 2 or 3 people in the whole org were payed.

I think DJs who aren't payed aren't necessarily "amateurs". if that was the case then the whole festival, parade and party was produced by "amateurs".

- Tue 4 Mar 2003 21:46:55
for me mixed feelings from this years mardi gras party. after attending many parties, and remembering the introduction of ticketing restrictions to keep the party as GLTI as possible, my overall feeling this year was that we went too mainstream. I met too many groups of people who went 'cos it was a cool thing to do, not to show support or even respect our community. i saw various incidents of uncomfortableness 'cos of the "straightness" of the party. while i am a fairly "straight" gay myself, I support the position of MG party being a safe space for sexual expression.

While we want equality, we also need to a place to express our difference safely and freely. Mardi Gras should be this space. Next year, bring back some sort of ticketing restrictions. I think that MArdi Gras Party is in danger of losing its identity if it becomes too mainstream. As Stephen Kidman has been saying (I met someone who said he was him on the night - a hot bod on it!) Mardi Gras cannot become a novelty "freak show" event if it is to survive and thrive into the future. Which I certainly want it too, it has been so good to me...
interested and ambivalent - Tue 4 Mar 2003 22:10:09

I didn't have any bad reactions - I was there in leathers with my grrl also in leather - we got quite a few appreciative looks - but no one was rude to us... unlike previous years.

I actually found this Mardi Gras more glbt than other years - that said - someone needs to tell all those straight girls to leave the sad feather boas at home!

We spent most of the night either in the bleachers in the Horden or dancing in front of the DJs in both the Horden and RHI - DJ Josh and Chip and Mike Kelly in partiular were fantasitc! I loved the faster music!! Too often I've spent past parties dragging the grrl from hall to hall looking for something to dance to - this year we actually had choice!

I must say I did really miss the Dome, mainly because that is where we can usually find all our friends when we need a break - because it was different this year - the leather people didn't seem to have a home... Inquistion should be fantastic this year - limited tickets should make it much more fun!
cuirqueer - Tue 4 Mar 2003 22:37:29

re the parade. It had much of what it had in previous years, I know the first timers all got the same buzz many of us felt when we first marched. The crowds were less, but instead of 15 deep they were around 8 deep. I am sure the reduction in crowds is due to the parade not being shown on tv, getting this back for next year should be a priority.

Congratulations goes out to NMG for putting on a successful festival that thousands of people enjoyed, and they also made a profit.

Up until this year I was a party virgin, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I had a fabulous time!!! I can't believe I have to wait a whole year to do it again!! The only depressing thing was walking out at 8am to see the same people who thought I looked fab at 4am, now telling me that I looked like a stripper!

I have to say that I had a great time at the party.
I have never been so proud to be a member of the Sydney Gay Community as I was on Saturday when I saw so many people out supporting the New Mardi Gras.
I think the community need just as bigger pat on the back as the New Mardi Gras.
Oh and thanks to everyone who supported me in taking off my shirt on the dancefloor for the first time - I know I am pectorial deficient but thanks for making me feel good about myself ;)

Friend on the Board - Wed 5 Mar 2003 14:05:58
Re "going mainstream" on ticketing policies. I think we need to find a compromise that allows us to party with our loyal and wonderful straight friends and family. But there is a major issue brewing: the party is becoming part of the international straight backpacker circuit. That is a different dynamic and must be avoided at all costs, because it brings with it huge crowds of drunk young people who don't even know what event they are attending (nothing wrong with them per se, but see what has happened to Pamplona and any number of other festivals around the world, including our own lot visiting small Turkish towns around Anzac Day).Youlose the local or community-specific flavour. And that's what makes it tasty.

I noticed some of this the other night, big groups of people lining up at the box office, all off their trees (drunk, not "happy"). MG won't have time or resources to get across to those visitors what kind of behaviour is expected.

This probably means developing some kind of broader membership which allows people to show their support by being a member (even an asscoiate member) so they at least have to go to the effort of finding and signing a form if they want a ticket, but doesn't create the same exclusionist framework of the past.
Not that I want to start that debate again... - Wed 5 Mar 2003 15:03:33

Not that I want to start that debate again... - Wed 5 Mar 2003 15:03:33

That debate DOES need to get started again. Yes Mardi Gras this year was a fantastic party, festival and parade. but we have to now face reality about how we can make this continue.
- Wed 5 Mar 2003 17:27:30

It's funny how different people see the crowd so differently. I saw a very much G & L crowd that was happy and having fun..
I thought the shows I saw were just OK. So much for all the tips on whom would be performing. As accurate as any other year. (Check the pinkboard archives!)
Really, who is going to fly around the world for almost nothing to perform one track? They can better support their local G & L communities in their own country.
That's why, we have had so many one hit wonders presented as 'stars' in the past. I hope NMG will give us our own shows again. This is what made MG so famous.
Music. Nothing special for me. Had heaps of fun though!
Need many, many more chairs and tables next year.
All hail the volunteer medical team. Legends!
Had a really good night.
roll on NMG! - Wed 5 Mar 2003 17:27:46
Not that I want to start that debate again... - Wed 5 Mar 2003 15:03:33 No, well not that anyone would want to but.....Under the old members-only ticketing policy, anyone who really wanted to go to the party, could. You just had to find a member to sell you a ticket if you weren't a member yourself. And lots of people who weren't gay and lesbian were members anyway. The old rules didn't bar non-gay/non-lesbian MG membership, they just created more hurdles to acquiring it if you weren't a self-declared poof or dyke.

My punt is that self-declared poofs, dykes, bi's, and trannies should automatically qualify for individual membership, on application, in round one of the new MG set-up - "Queer" is a state of mind, not a state of being. Anyone outside those categories could apply in round two, providing they're nominated by, say, two existing members. Non poof/dyke/bi/trannie membership shouldn't exceed, say, 15% of the total membership base.

Associate membership would still be available for people buying tix from overseas and members would still be able to buy up to, say, 3 party tix.
but I will anyway... - Wed 5 Mar 2003 18:11:29

The party did **NOT** sell out. It was only said to sell out.
- Wed 5 Mar 2003 21:35:31
This is the opinion of the poster.
I agree that the mix at the 2003 party needs to raise the thorny old issue of access to tickets. The party was too mixed, its fine to take our friends and supporters, but I dont want to go to a party that is just another event on the backpacker world tour - things to do - circuit. I felt a distinct heading in that direction with this party.

I understand the need to sell lots of tickets as NMG needed the money, but if MG party looses its queer identity, it will loose its prime audience, me and fellow queers/glbtis. and then what do we have but a parody, a "freak show".

MG still managed to sell 17000 tickets last year with the old ticketing regime after 911. so dont lets throw the baby out with the bath water. MG must remain resolutly queer to remain alive.
into the future - Wed 5 Mar 2003 21:49:08

Awesome party my only suggestion is that MG need more security for next years party...my friends and I saw waay to many of the wrong type of people jumpin the fence and just dissapearing into the crowd....it would not bother me if they looked like people who knew what the party was about and just could not afford a ticket but these were guys who were going in to cause trouble.
keep a eye out next year MG
- Wed 5 Mar 2003 23:52:58
but I will anyway... - Wed 5 Mar 2003 18:11:29

What's to stop non-GLBT people just ticking the GLBT box and thus getting free passage into MG?

Everyone should have to prove their committment to the GLBT community. it's ridiculous that a PFLAG mum would have hurdles to jump over and a gay party boy (who does nothing except complain about bad music) gets free passage and then sellls his tickets to his fag hag friends.
round and round we go! - Thu 6 Mar 2003 08:40:09

Mari Gras was excellent its good to see all the hard effort that the NMG board has placed in to save the event paid off, does anyone know when Inquisition will be on ? i think i have to attend this one , gawd am i becomin a dance party queen or what :)
chuckyoz - Thu 6 Mar 2003 10:41:38
What about linking membership to volunteers? If the only people allowed to become members of MardiGras were the people who volunteered time to the organisation (you could set a minimum) and they could buy a certain number of tickets (5 or 7 or even unlimited?) then you would get the kind of people you want at the party, since its the volunteers who want the event that they work on to be a successful queer event. And the kind of straights that would volunteer would be the kind of people you'd want at the party. This may also help in the selection of board memebers as well, since an involved membership is more likely to know the people standing for election.
Zakalwe - Thu 6 Mar 2003 11:10:57
Inquisition is on 24/5. Tickets are being sold to members first and then to other associated leather organisations. It is unlikely that there will be tickets available to the general public given the smaller size of teh party this year.

This is how SLPA is ensuring that Inquisition does not just beome another event on the party calendar and remains a distinct leather event.
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 11:58:53

Wow - What a party!!! Thanks NMG

Although ticketing needs to be addressed in my opinion, the GLBT were testing the water and we were a all a bit wary of all our new visitors.

It's good and fine that the GLBT community invite their straight friends to celebrate our sexualities and party BUT in future they must be invited by a non-heterosexual member. Non-heterosexuality must be a criteria within the new constitution.

We cannot end up being a tourist destination for anyone that wants a "new" or "alternative" experience - that is not what the party is about, rather about the GLBT community coming togther and being able to express our sexuality freely.

The party exceeded all my expectations and I did enjoy myself but I need and want a space for the GLBT community.

The visitors and tourists must be told it's one night a year that we want for ourselves.....if they truely are supportive they will accept this.
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 12:20:13

round and round we go! - Thu 6 Mar 2003 08:40:09 How do you "prove your commitment to the GLBT community?" And whose idea of GBLT community are we going to be proving our commitment to? As far as I'm concerned a gay boy who's living an out gay life, whose putting 1000's of bucks over the counter at HQ, gay pubs and clubs and who parties like there's no tomorrow is about as GLBT committed as you can get. Where are all these poor excluded PFLAG Mums we keep hearing about? Most PFLAG parents I know want their kids to be happy, safe and fulfilled. That doesn't mean they want to involve themselves in the detailed totality of their kids lives anymore than straight parents with straight kids do.

There's never been anything to stop people ticking MG membership boxes that purport to - but don't - represent the ticker's sexual identity. Ultimately there can't be a foolproof system and we probably wouldn't want to belong to the sort of organisation that wanted to relentlessly pursue that sort of purist goal.
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 12:23:52

I had an absolutely fantastic party last weekend...but it was also equally as interesting. And having only come on this board days afterwards I am happy to see that the general tone is that "we" - gay & lesbian et al community - want, even need this important ritual continue but we are circumspect of the the reality with ticketing. I am unashamedly exclusionist! Yes I have straight friends but the party is an important event for me as a gay man to connect with my essence - it is almost inexplicable what takes over - and no it isn't simply the drugs as weeks before I am a manic wirlwind of creativity and conceptualising for that one event of beautiful non-linear time. For me this is in need of protection and preservation - no matter how bitter the inclusionist ticketing debate becomes.

I don't want straight tourist "there for a good time" when it is much much deeper for me and other gay people I know - I went to the party with 3 party virgins age between 24 and 32 - they were blown away by being in an near exclusionary event. Let make sure this experience continues.

As mentioned by the leather set above the party is a vitally important time for me to express myself through a look - or which is camp story telling costumes.

This year my boyfriend and I went as "Kings that were Queens"- an semiotic allegory of French & English Kings that were gay. My costumes are designed to speak with my kind and as a gift to them. They are not for stupid straight back packers et al that only understand costume as "Mickey and Mini" to consume.

A bit late but I wanted to say that I THOROUGHLY enjoyed the party. Well done, the music and crowd was excellent!!!
Thank you, NMG - Thu 6 Mar 2003 12:33:25
Appalling that someone was hassled in leather - but guess you can be unlucky. I wore leather as usual and had a fab time - could depend on where you were. I did get photographed in the portaloo queue - could be very frightening. I buried myself in the sweet spot in the Horden in front of the DJ booth, where there were a number of us in leather, and had a wonderful time (except fot the hard house set in the middle). Think the key difference this time was that it lacked the Dome being a dark venue. Buck Naked was as agood as he has ever been if not better. I left this plane during Massive Attack, and nearly again earlier with Severed Head's "Dead Eyes Opened", but I would've enjoyed it more in the Dome. (Bizarrely, the Dome was not dead - went in there about 4:30 and it was going off. Full marks to Gary T for his Patrick Cowley megamix of "I Feel Love".) I would've also enjoyed the night much more if Mandy and Buck had been one after the other. Anyway, I did not notice a change in the crowd, just a dispersement of it due to the Dome. I always have an expectation that someone will pinch my ass if I'm in chaps - but anyway what are chaps for if not easy access? I'm gonna get my fix of leather at Beyond this weekend.
lovin' it. - Thu 6 Mar 2003 12:38:01
There was definitely a greta number of curious "tourists" on saturday night, thought most of the ones i encountered were great. I agree though that it is a problem if its becoming just another backpacker thing to do, or a place for curious straights to go gawk. that's what the parade's for!
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 12:57:59
I've heard that Inquisition will be held in City Live only. Same source also told me that tickets will be offered to members only, which would make sense, as the venue is only licensed for around 1400 people.
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 13:59:47
my score: 7 points for the first DJ in the RHI for getting me to dance in that room again after a 6 year hiatus(basement jaxx/superchumbo). 10 points for the excellent lighting & video screens in the RHI. 0 points for the PA company/sound engineer that installed the terrible sound system in the RHI. 10 points for Buck Naked for playing Nine Inch Nails in the hordern. 6 points for the horderns sound system. 0 points for the shitty Reverse Garbage style decor. 0 points for me for getting too rancid to dance when Mandy Rollins was playing. 7 points to the fat bird that sang in the hordern for giving me a good laugh. 4 points to the very ... uhhh ... sobering hardhouse music that got played after her: "hmmmm why am I listening to this ? lets go for a walk to Dome" 0 points to Lovin It & myself for not seeing each other at the party (but I heard a rumour that he was instrumental in getting the impromptu sex space started, so he gets awarded 8 points + another 10 points for the filth he got up to after the party)
Mr Panties - Thu 6 Mar 2003 15:31:26
Zakalwe - Thu 6 Mar 2003 11:10:57 There's probably around 100,000 out GLBT people in Sydney and very few of them are even going to be MG volunteers - for thousands of different reasons, like needing to earn a living for instance.

It's great that people do volunteer their time but confining MG membership to those people, regardless of their sexuality, would see MG disappearing up it's own bum in one season.

The greatest voluntary act any GLBT person can offer MG is just to be part of it, by purchasing a party ticket, going to Fairday etc, etc. Any attempt to restrict this should be resisted. MG is about all of us.
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 15:38:12

ONe way we could easily overcome the "extras" coming along and deal with the member=tickets fiasco is we could have single sex parties. One party for the ladies, another for the lads.

That would definitely keep all the straight homophobes out and still retain the essential gay & lesbian nature of the party.

Worked for Gay games, didn't it?
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 15:50:06

Just a question -

Where was this "impromptu" sex space and did it last the distance or was it broken up ??
looking - Thu 6 Mar 2003 16:29:03

Can someone please confirm that GLBT scenics peole were paid for their "talents" where DJs weren't? otherwise i think it'll stand as said that everyone bar 3 people in MG volunteered all their numerous talents to pull off a fab festival.
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 16:56:02
'roll on NMG'( Wed 5 Mar 2003 17:27:46 ), I resent the inference. Check the Grafitti Wall archives and you'll find I got the performers right nearly ever time. It's not my fault that people still keep coming here saying Madonna's playing after you've told them repeatedly it's Jimmy Barnes. And let's face it, there wasn't anyone to tell you about this year. ;-)
The Phantom Insider (retired) - Thu 6 Mar 2003 18:18:06
- Thu 6 Mar 2003 15:50:06 I definitely think that NMG needs to look at this. Maybe Sleaze as two parties: boys at one, girls at another with the March party still being about everyone coming together - so to speak...

Remember the Unity in CommUNITY

HI ALL,

Had a ball at the party, it was awesome. Congrats to the new SGLMG for getting it all together so quickly. Shame the parade didn’t make it to TV this year though.
Just a note on the ticketing front: I agree that there need to be limitations and some restrictions to ensure that the events remain GLBT events, however, I believe that it is necessary to have SOME straight people there. WHY? Because when many others in society discriminate against us, and judge us based on our sexuality, our straight friends do not. They stand by us and encourage us when others walk away, when others persecute us for being ourselves. I cherish my friends, those who are gay and those who are straight. We are not friends because of our sexuality, but because we get along, because we care for and support one another and because when we’re together we have a bloody good time! When people make anti-gay comments, they stand up for us, and years ago my partner and I signed for our straight friends to join SGLMG. They didn’t need to join to gain access to tickets for parties, there have always been enough people around who could readily get them tickets if they wanted them, but they wanted to join because it was something they could do to show support for our community, for the community my partner and I belong to. Our friends don’t ogle or stare when they come to the parties they simply have a great time with the rest of us, and we dance and chat and wander all night, you know, the usual stuff. My partner and I love that they come to the party with us –we want them to, and we embrace their non-judgemental attitude to our lives.
So yes, whilst we do need to ensure that our parties do not become drunken free for all’s filled with backpackers and homophobes, and all the negative behaviour that would come with that, we do need to remember that it is our straight friends who unlike so many others we have encountered through our lives, do not discriminate against us, or try to change us, and love and accept us just the way we are. So let’s not discriminate against those who do not discriminate against us.

Hey " Nice-ish tits" - love your sense of humour. I got my nippled tweaked this year - first time in over 18 yrs of parties !!!
As for leather man - cant understand it. If you dress up whether in leather or some other outfit, you gotta expect people to look/comment. As for getting your arse pinched, if it was hanging out and you've got great buns , isnt this what you were hoping for ? or maybe they were just not your type so it upset you ?
As for the party - my only wish is for Dome to come back as it has in the past. As a few have mentioned the Hordern was either HOrdern or Dome music and just too mixed but we know there was no choice this year but the 2 different styles dont go well in one hall.
Ready for the next one and just when is the next party at Fox ? surely not Sleaze ???? - Thu 6 Mar 2003 19:50:31
what the !!! Lovin It' started the impromptu sex space ?? shiver me timbers !! now I really MUST get a ticket to his Easter Egg Hunt party. what outlets are the tickets available from ? I'm so excited !! here's a few more exclamation marks !!!
Donna Kebab - Thu 6 Mar 2003 20:26:42
The QUEER NATION party was fantastic. Does anyone know how I could get the playlist of music? It was awesome. Thanks!
BB - Fri 7 Mar 2003 00:43:31

To "Remember the UNITY in CommUNITY",
So well said! There are a few of us straights that don't want to be in the company of a party full of "drunk backpackers and homophobes" either!
I always feel welcome at your parties, and that's a good thing.
spice of life - Fri 7 Mar 2003 09:09:03
"ready for the..." The point about being touched or spoken at is the inappropriateness and intent of the comment. If is nasty, aggressive and derogatory (as these comment were) - then I should not have to put up with it because I am in leather. Yes, I did get some complementary, friendly and pleasant comments HOWEVER I just don't want to feel threatened by what people say. I would rather be at home getting yelled at by my top!

Perhaps I didn't go out with as much attitude as previous years and scare these people into silence.
- Fri 7 Mar 2003 09:18:47

I only saw one drunk backpacker the whole night, holding a beer, standing at the edge of the dancefloor, swaying from side to side and looking very confused. I felt sorry for him!!
K - Fri 7 Mar 2003 09:33:10
It's a complete lie. I started nothing at that party - and the one attempt I did have (with a very cute young thing in rubber chaps)was cutoff very early by Buck Naked playing Gus Gus's "David, David". I was too busy having multiple musical ephiphanies. However, I'll accept the 18 out of 20. The Easter Egg hunt is a sell out at this stage, but keep your ear to the ground, more tickets could be released depending on how much room the lighting rig takes.

Just a question -

Where was this "impromptu" sex space and did it last the distance or was it broken up ??
- Fri 7 Mar 2003 14:58:26

The impromptu sex space was in a nook in the Hordern. It finished about 4am I think, perhaps through the efforts of the two policepeople I spied nearby. It was fun while it lasted though. My favourite was the handsome young man who tapped another on the shoulder and said, ever so politely, "Excuse me, can I fuck you?" Who says young people don't have manners?
PaulD - Fri 7 Mar 2003 17:46:22
As an out-of-towner I am glad to hear that this year's party was (for most people at least) a success.

This isn't a strictly MG related post, but have noticed a number of leather folk posting on this board.

As an out-of-towner I usually buy tickets to Inquisition when they go on sale to the general public (or have done for the last 3 parties anyhow). I have tried contacting SLP about their ticket policy for regional persons, but have not had any response.

I am even keen to sign up as a SLP member, but being a regional leather girl, I don't know any members of SLP who could nominate me.

Any ideas?

I attended my first mardi gras in 1990 so I'm no young thing. Rather than criticising the straight people who attended, they should be applauded for financially supporting mardi gras even if it was not their direct intetion. Save your criticism for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters who chose not to attend the party and support mardi gras. I think the ticketing policy was a good compromise, keeping it to members for a limited time then opening it to the general public. This ensured the party was a desperately needed financial success. The world is an evolving place and we all need to evolve with it. It's about time the closet doors were opened and we practised some acceptance and tolerance to the world at large. It's a two way street folks. May we never go back to a completely members only ticketing policy. I enjoyed a fabulous night dancing and socialising with friends. I didn't need a mens space, another idea I hope has finally been laid to rest. If I wanted casual sex I'd go to a sauna. The night is a celebration of the diversity of sexual identity and not sex. Thankyou Mardi Gras for organising a fabulous night for all of us and cheers to a new beginning and future successes. The only thing constant in life is change.

there's a great pic of C-vox's bad hair day in one of the fag-rags. she must be a sista with a do like that.
Mr Panties - Sat 8 Mar 2003 11:22:23
Well i've been deported back to New Zealand but wanted to add my two cents worth. I had an good time, but sadly while I was there had to sort things out with a boy i was seeing before i moved here.

Azure was good and I had a lot of fun running around with my digital camera taking pics of cute boys. Spent the rest of the week catching up with friends and even managed a trip to Newcastle to see the family.

The Mardi Gras weekend was fun but long (I was up for 56 Hrs!!!!!) Did the audio and LX for Melbourne Marching Boys in the parade, once finished I headed back to the hotel, got dressed and got myself to the party. Party was OK, it was one of my first alone but I ran into most of my friends. Enjoyed the RHI mostly but also had some fun in City Live.

Did the Shift recovery which was fun, probably should have gone home for sum sleep but couldn't get around to leaving. Went from there to the Orgy and had the usual amount of fun, lots of very sexy guys which is one of the things i miss most about Sydney.

From there it was off to Queernation. Met the very cute Connie on the front of the podium and throughout the night had a lot of fun with him. He was a bad influence and together we got into all sorts of trouble. In keeping with tradition I wore my overalls but as usual they spent more time falling off than staying on *grin* Music and crowd were a lot of fun and I never felt it was too hot or packed.

Quick costume change and it was off to Arq. Now I like Arq but the recovery there was like walking into a K Hole! At first I thought there had been some kind of medical emergency and that was whay the music was so flat. We hung around there waiting for things to pick up but they never did so we went off had a late lunch and then FINALLY headed off to get some sleep.

All in all I think it was a good weekend and i'm glad I made the effort to go. Personally I wasn't really in the right headspace but that didn't prevent me from having a good time. I would like to thank all the people who worked so hard making sure it happened this year; it so easily mightn't have and Mardi Gras would have slid from our lives for ever. If you don't believe this is possible just look at how quickly Frisky dissapeared leaving only happy memories.

Lets hope that next year the Mardi Gras season goes to another strength and u can bet I'll be back there to stir up more trouble.

ptb - Sat 8 Mar 2003 10:51:26 What the hell is sexual identity if not who you have sex with, you ditzy queen?
- Sat 8 Mar 2003 23:05:43
Sat 8 Mar 2003 23:05:43 - It's also about who you LOVE, who you CONNECT with on a spiritual level.

If it was only about sex then why are we trying to have our relationships recognised? Let's all just get married in hetero marriages and have our "sex" on the side.
Pfffft! - Sun 9 Mar 2003 14:47:43

i know this is a bit late, but who the hell is C-Vox? which hall did she perform in (i assume it was the Hordern??). what did she sing? was she worth seeing?
- Mon 10 Mar 2003 11:24:58
It's not only about sex but there'd be bugger-all point in same-sex relationship recognition if the sex - in same-sex attraction - wasn't the key issue.
- Mon 10 Mar 2003 11:25:46
ppb - go to the website www.sydneyleatherpride.org for details on SLPA membership.
- Mon 10 Mar 2003 12:22:16
Mon 10 Mar 2003 11:25:46 - I disagree. who you connect with is the key issue, because that lasts well past when the sex in a relationship dies.
- Tue 11 Mar 2003 21:43:38
dear " Mon 10 Mar 2003 11:24:58" if you can be bothered "learning" more about c-vox, go to star69records.com

I'm still unsure why she performed at the party
Mr Panties - Wed 12 Mar 2003 16:39:04

Answer - I asked everyone around who the gal singing in the Hordern was and no one knew. Only found out the next week it was C-Vox. What did she sing ?
I didnt know her let alone her songs so for me it was zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
I hope they fix Dome by Sleaze. As some people raved over the DJ's and commented they wanted them back in Dome , I agree. The Hordern was not its usual self. I thought it was gonna be a mix of Dome/Hordern music but it was all Dome type music till I left at 6am.....not a complaint as was expecting different styles but not one hardhouse/trance DJ in there.
Fingers crossed. - Wed 12 Mar 2003 21:36:37
- Tue 11 Mar 2003 21:43:38 Well, sure. But what's the attraction in the first place?
- Thu 13 Mar 2003 07:55:58
Fingers crossed - I beg to differ. You can spank me if the DJ b/w Mandy Rollins & Buck Naked - Doug whoeverhewas, was not playing hard house. It doesn't get any harder.
- Thu 13 Mar 2003 09:28:16
Thu 13 Mar 2003 07:55:58 - With my boy, it was how good i felt when he held me in his arms. Sure the sex was great, but the f***ing has been great with lots of people (including women). My boy was special because i want to stay with him even after the sex has stopped ....and in some ways that's the best bit!
