Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2003 #1 Graffiti Wall
After a year of more drama and happenings than Neighbours we are almost at our own special time of year. It almost didn't happen, but thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2003 is definitely on.

The first Mardi Gras parade was in 1978 as an evening of celebration after a daytime protest rally. It ended in Kings Cross with police violence and arrests.

We have come a long way in the 25 years since then, in Sydney, NSW, Australia and many parts of the world. We have lots of rights: it is much easier to live as a lesbian or gay man than it was in 1978. Some people are satisfied with this. But we are not yet equal. For instance we still do not have an equal age of consent in NSW. We need to take advantage of the parade being just three weeks before the NSW state election.

Even though we are still discriminated against, our community still harbour a lot of discrimination: bisexuals, aboriginals, transexuals, asians, HIV positive, to name just a few. New Mardi Gras is promoting a policy of inclusion. We must learn to accept the variances and differences between the individuals within our communities.

Mardi Gras is a time of both politics and celebration. And this season presents us with lots of opportunities to celebrate. The guide has just been launched, and it is chock full of things to do, see and enjoy. So lets get partying ....

25 years of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transexual & queer culture

check the website www.azureparty.com to see all tickets have sold out. congrats to new mgardi gras team, while i think in the medium long term, more of the same - as seems to be what's happening this year - is not the answer to the survival and renewal of the mardi gras 'concept' you've done a great job in getting it happening in the interim. btw, im stumped as to what the answer to long term relevance and viability is.... in the meantime great job keeping it alive until we can figure it out.

Mark Dynamix, Nervous and Animate? What kind of DJ line up is that for "strange love", the official Azure after party? I thought that Azure was meant to be a gay & lesbian event and part of the gay & lesbian mardi gras festival. Why is the Azure after party featuring 3 straight DJ's and not one single gay DJ. Do any of these DJ's actually play at gay venues, ever? Do these DJ's actually have a gay following? What style of music do they play because I'm sure it's not what I am into. I know, I know, everybody has different taste in music and everyone wants to have their taste catered for and why does the music have to be mainstream and commercial all the time, but I mean really. Come on! It sounds to me like the organisation putting on Azure has some tie with this "strange love" party and they are just using Azure to promote this other event.

I don't think anyone on this board really cares. There have been next to no postings (apart from countdowns) on this board when other years this is the most packed board.

I would suggest that you take your concern to the party wall, but they're not really interested in gay politics/community since they believe everyone in the community should offer their services to MG for free but that DJs are the exception because they are gods and need to be paid huge sums of money.

I love Fair Day , but I understand some whacko is trying to make it into a anti war demo , the possible war is a too divided issue to try and confuse it with fair day .
I suggest if someone is intersted in a anti war demo they march in the parade under a banner of G and L opposed to war or have a anti war info tent at fair day , do not try and confuse the two things together.

I respect everyones personal opinion and right to protest ,but please do not try and push it against evryone 100%
- Sun 2 Feb 2003 22:26:00

I have heard that the day will be structured around the possibility that many people will want to go to both the anti-war march and Fair Day.

People who want to go to Fair Day and an anti-war demo can do both, can't they?

I don't believe that Fair Day needs to turn itself into an anti-war demo.

The Iraq situation is an issue for everyone to make their own minds up about, regardless of sexuality. The range of views within the g&l community, on all the permutations, will be varied. I'm tired of "g&l" being used as cannon-fodder for every "smash the capitalist machine" trendoid cause.

Does NMG think that leaving Iraqis to endure Saddam's brutality ad infinitum is an appropriate g&l response?

Mon 3 Feb 2003 11:45:22 - "I'm tired of "g&l" being used as cannon-fodder for every "smash the capitalist machine" trendoid cause."

That's why they invented the term "queer". ;)

I notice in the NMG pre party publicity, the provision again of a gender targeted space, this time in City Live. I have been vocal in my opposition to these spaces in the past (including the thankfully now defunked "scenic maze"), since I've believed that all spaces at the MG party should welcome all, and be safe for all from the GLBT community. I was however persuaded by past arguements that the provision of spaces specifically targeted to women was a valid marketing tool to increase participation. I would like to raise these questions for rational discussion. Why are these spaces still being provided? If participation has not increased then surely these spaces should be discontinued? If the the provision of these spaces has been successful, and more women are attending, why are they still needed? If they have been a failure, what needs to be done to make the "L" in "GLBT" increase in numbers? Is providing one group in our community more services for the same money discrimination?
Mike Hannah - Mon 3 Feb 2003 13:08:55
re: mike's question: Is providing one group in our community more services for the same money discrimination?
I suppsoe that would rule out a chill out space for PLWHAs? Note that City Live is not women (or lesbian) only. And I will be suprised if City Live is even dominated by women, esp seeing there is no Dome this year. Do we really need to rehash why lesbians might want a women only space? Ask you lesbian friends Mike. I for one love partying with my gay male friends, but we each respect that sometimes you just want the frisson and freedom that comes from being just with yr own gender.
- Mon 3 Feb 2003 13:48:11
The time-out room for PLWHA was discontinued at Sleaze. There are probably 100's of poz people at the big parties but it's a long time since many of us needed or wanted a disease-specific chill-out space.

"THANKS FOR THE MAMMARIES" - Lesbians Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

Last year was the first time for the Lesbians Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Float to be put in the parade and the response that we had was fantastic, unfortunately this year our major sponsors from last year have chosen not to support us so I am hoping that there maybe some sponsors out there who will be able to assist us in inkind or sponorship. We are needing assistance with music, lights, truck, clothing and whatever assistance you are willing to give.
We are also scouting for people who are interested in participating in the parade, dancers, marchers, drag queens, dykes with bikes etc etc.

So if you are interested please feel free to contact me by e-mail

In regards to the city live space; it is an inclusive space for girls and boys. Previous MG ticket sale stats show that only 15-20% of tickets are sold to girls, that means that at least 80% of the party is boys, so its nice as a woman to have a space where you can congregate and party with other women.
JR - Mon 3 Feb 2003 16:40:45
Mon 3 Feb 2003 13:48:11 - I think Mike's question raises a valid point. Maybe the party is a wrong example but with the membership/board parity it is. MG in the past has tried to rectify the gender inbalance of the MG membership with no real results.

From this we must conclude either:

a. Lesbians (or more accurately women) just aren't as interested in joining MG as a member (nor attending parties).

b. There aren't as many lesbians around as there are gay men (there is some scientific evidence to suggest that homosexuality occurs more frequently in the male population than the female).

or

c. That MG is doing something which puts off lesbians from joining the membership or coming along to the parties.

Mike's question isn't that uncommon. many others too (myself included) have asked the question. Why is it that we keep on thinking that it is option C that is true and not either A or B? for how long will we resist the thought that it is A or B that is the truth?

This is not a mysoginistic question. simply one of resources. why keep on doing something that'll cost us alot of money for no return ("celebration of the female voice" being a prime example)?

I don't particularly find the MG party to be anything I'm remotely interested in (hence my constant annoynance with countdown boys antics) - yet I don't see MG catering to the non-dance party boy by having a party consisting of live jazz performances. why? because there simply ain't enough people like me to justify such an expense.

I supported MG last year by buying two Sleaze tickets (that went unused) asking for nothing in return. I think that I/we are entitled to ask a question of the community in return.
jt - Mon 3 Feb 2003 17:53:14

Dendy - Mon 3 Feb 2003 19:26:48
c.
and
d. women (including lesbians, bi and queer women) earn statistically less than the average male, therefore less disposable income to flash around.
B - Mon 3 Feb 2003 20:11:54
Dead right on your comments B. As much as I love being in the middle of the Horden when it's going off, as a short girl I run the risk of many blokey elbows to the head and getting stomped on. If I wasn't such a brat, this would piss me off a bit. At least in a space where there are more women than men, you have more people at eye line, and more chance of spotting the women in a crowded dance floor. This is a good thing. I think City Live is a great idea, and it's not exclusively girly, so you can drag the beard in with you and not get split up.

Also, if you're not a persistant articulate woman, you have less chance of getting noticed at a MG meeting than a tall loud gay boy. I dunno why, but that's what happens. Not conducive to feeling included or putting in your two cents. In the case of another community organisation, we've had the instance of a clueless male making stupid comments about previous committe members (who happened to be female) and then wondering why female membership has dropped off. Well der! Next time, run it through someone with a bit of sense first.

I'm not fussed about what genders we have on the board of the new MG as long as the people doing the jobs listen and act equally.
Evil Twin - Mon 3 Feb 2003 21:55:01

B - Mon 3 Feb 2003 20:11:54 - so if women don't have enough money and money is what MG needs then maybe they're the wrong target group.
I think it's B - Mon 3 Feb 2003 22:23:29
Can anyone tell me if this Underwear Party at the Shift on Feb 15th has anything to do with MArdi Gras?
- Tue 4 Feb 2003 01:34:10
B - Mon 3 Feb 2003 20:11:54 - blaming it on statistically lower incomes is a cop out. Memberships costs what? $30?? Hardly out of reach of the average community member.

And how can MG be doing things to piss lesbians off? Half the board is a lesbian so if they don't know what lesbians want (ie. celebration of the female voice that lost lots of money 2 years in a row) then we just have to accept that there aren't as many homosexual women around as there are homosexual men. And then plan accourdingly.

I think if women are catered for they will attend an event. All we need is a space with the right ingredients - good music (no banging of garbage bin lids, we like 'hands in the air house' too you know), great lighting, a reasonable number of toilets and a greater percentage of women in the crowd. I don't believe that has ever happened at Mardi Gras before. At last years party the only place to meet and mingle with other women was a tiny Take-out Chinese Restaurant! I recall dancing in a tent with horrible sound, no lighting and rubble on the ground a few years back! Finally both women and men will be catered for at the Mardi Gras party.

LAUNCH UPDATE

The Mardi Gras Season Launch IS on this Friday night. The Launch is NOT at the Opera House. The Launch IS in Hyde Park North.

Food and drink will be available from 6.00 pm and top Sydney DJ Richard Weiss has donated his time to get us in the mood.
- Wed 5 Feb 2003 10:58:01

How many more times do people want to say the date & venue of the launch - its sounding like a jumping record.
- Wed 5 Feb 2003 12:30:15
when will we know the dj line up for Azure? We sort of have a right to know dont you think????I mean ,we've paid a zillion dollars for a ticket. I know there's too much dj worship in this town but we all have our favourites, and it would be nice to know if they are playing.
Elmo - Wed 5 Feb 2003 15:13:32
Wed 5 Feb 2003 09:03:43 - Contact volunteers@mardigras.org.au or see the website for more details.
- Wed 5 Feb 2003 20:09:23
Azure party is 17 days away (don't confuse me with countdown boy). maybe there won't be any DJ's and we'll all be dancing around a portable stereo that's pumping out music from a Wayne G cd. no really. What are they waiting for?! It's NOT meant to be a suprise.
cat: D.O.A - Thu 6 Feb 2003 01:32:13
The fact that Azure havent released the DJ line up clearly shows that they dont give a toss about the paying public.

I for one would not be surprised if the DJ's are 2 or 3 nobodys or even worse are probably the guys or girls who are actually putting on the event. A few bedroom DJ's producing the party to get their 15 minutes of DJ fame.

If DJ selection and music type on the night are important to you and you already have a ticket to this event I would be preparing yourselves for an almighty let down.
- Thu 6 Feb 2003 09:28:53
This is the opinion of the poster.

Thu 6 Feb 2003 09:28:53 - If DJ selection and music type is important to you, wouldn't it be smarter to wait until they've announced the DJ line up before you buy your ticket?

Maybe we are all just a bunch of sheep and go to whatever party the "in" crowd will be at and don't really use our brains!!!

The "paying public" are idiots!!!

Re - I left high school (attitude) years!!!! ago - Thu 6 Feb 2003 11:02:28

The issue is that Azure will not be releasing a DJ line up. The first time you know who the DJ's are is when you arrive on the night.
- Thu 6 Feb 2003 12:13:42

Well, call me an idiot if you like, but it is clear in this case that if I had waited to see who the djs were before I bought a ticket, I would have missed out on tickets. Now, I can always sell my ticket if I dont like the dj's...
IF THEY EVER TELL US WHO THEY WILL BE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Elmo - Thu 6 Feb 2003 13:16:15
Hey Elmo, Guess what ?? That aint gonna tell you squat !!

Rock up on the night and waste your time & money cause they will be no name DJ's.

Thats why they arent releasing the names publically

I would actually say that the issue is that they are refusing to name the DJs before the night when the convention in Sydney is that the DJs are announced beforehand. When you make such a change of convention then you need to ensure people are aware that something different is happening. Azure have failed to do this.
- Fri 7 Feb 2003 07:57:05
Does anyone want to buy a ticket to Azure?
Elmo - Fri 7 Feb 2003 09:26:47
I merrily bought my Azure ticket at the end of last year, not terribly concerned that no DJ line up had been announced. There are many other reasons to attend that party and, anyway, the music at practically every gay party I have ever been to has been dodgy, so which of the dodgy DJ's they choose is a bit of a moot point. Saying that, however, it certainly is a bit rich that they STILL haven't announced the DJ's!! It is creating a lot of ill will (though other people know who are going are oblvious to the fact).
Why is the Azure discussion going on on this grafitti board anyway? It's not a Mardi Gras event!
Sir Vix - Fri 7 Feb 2003 10:32:28
Azure don't need to conform to unwritten rules of social etiquette.

If people are willing (or stupid enough) to buy tickets before the DJ line up is announced in case they "oh my goddddd!!" miss out on tickets, then those people have no-one else to blame but themselves.

We are ADULTS. We are RESPONSIBLE for our OWN decisions. It was YOUR decision to buy tickets before the DJ line up announcement, so stop whininng and stop blaming other people for YOUR decision.
I left high school (attitude) years!!!! ago - Fri 7 Feb 2003 10:55:44

Elmo - Fri 7 Feb 2003 09:26:47 - No I don't want to buy your ticket (unless it's free!!), I'm going to wait until they announce the DJ line up before I decide to go to the party.
- Fri 7 Feb 2003 10:58:23
Guess what ??

There will be NO DJ line up announcement for Azure.

Either rock up on the night and see how you've all been conned with a dodgy selection of people you probably have never heard of before or better still everyone take a walkman with you with your own favourite music just in case.

Hey JR - you say not that banging of garbage bin lids , we like house too etc etc but what about my dyke friends who love the bangin' music ????????????
this just ends up upsetting others. I say different Halls , different music
and all for one and one for all. Going down this track we'd need at least 3 halls for ladies only with 3 different types of music , similiar for the guys and then we come to transgender/other gender/bi/straight and so on. We already have night clubs/bars catering to each sexuality.
MG and Sleaze is great to be all together.
We all have had run-ins with hair/elbows/heels/cigarettes . I just move a few
feet away and problem solved or if dancing in a group move to the other side and let someone else cop it for awhile !

We went to the Launch last night. It was pretty good! Hyde Park North filled up with happy people, picnic-ing, dancing, chatting and resting after a long work week. I got a bit sad when the beer ran out. But they got more beer in. The speeches were appropriate and the entertainment worked. Met lots of mates, did catch up, had fun. An excellent start to Mardi Gras. Yay.

I too went to the launch. I found it worked as well at Hyde Park North and it was nice not to have the long walk back if you lived in the inner east. I guess Mardi Gras will be a bit more low key this year but it was nice to see the crowd still turned out. Here is hoping the rest of the three weeks work as well.

the only very minor detraction was the politicking on the anti war rhetoric, but i suppose that is the co presidents stance , and he had a audience in front of him, anyway NMG has done a great job, and a little self indulgence is forgiven.

Do other people get the impression that interest in the whole MG experience is somewhat muted this year?
O/S visitors might arrive and be quite surprised about the general lack of interest.

Curious - Don't know exactly how many but certainly nowhere near the numbers you'd have at an Opera House forecourt opening. It was a bit like a cross between Fair Day on the wind-down and the Candlelight memorial service on e.
Funky-weird but definitely not unpleasant.

NMG have deliberately, and sensibly, gone for "lowkey." Let's face it, this year, (providing they sell the party out), they could escape with running a festival based on two drag queens and an elderly tapdancing DJ who also tells jokes does bookreadings, paints Important Queer Art and shows a few home movies..simultaneously. Oh. They are!

I wouldn't worry too much about overseas visitors. They're on holiday and Sydney's fabulous and most of the time they're doing beach/shopping/harbour trips and/or having sex. The party will be "wunnafull" and then they'll head away for a Top End recovery, only to discover that it's raining. Constantly.
That's why MG always looks like such a golden time in retrospect.

My name is Jean-Luc and I direct a Brazilian Drumming and Dance group called SambaFrog (www.sambafrog.com.au). Last year we participated to the parade as the percussion group for Latin American and friends ( see images on the site at http://www.sambafrog.com.au/gallery/mardi_gras.html ). Basically the group Latin American and friends contacted us to play Brazilian percussion for them to Dance on. We were a group of 17 drummers. The energy was incredible and the crowd responded very positively to our playing and dancing (they liked it so much, they were screaming). We had a great time and would like to do it again. The only thing is that Latin American and friend is not parading this year. I was wondering if there would be anyone out there, participating to the parade who might be interested in having some reliable fun loving people to drum for them (and that's quality drumming).
Let me know.

Calling all GaySkaters! MardiGras has asked GaySkate to participate in Foreplay again this year.

We need skaters who are street-confident to join us on the afternoon of the Parade and entertain the waiting crowds. No difficult dance routines (nutbush maybe <grin>), just skate, say hi and have fun.

If you're interested send us an email at gay_skate@yahoo.com.au

PS
Keep an eye on the website http://gayskate.isfabulous.com/ or drop us an email for further info on the Rink. We'll know once and for all on Friday whats going on with the Rink.

To those who are saying that the vibe is less exciting this year, have you been to any events yet? The vibe was happening at the launch of Mazz Images book at the Powerhouse on Sunday. Also went to see Savage Grace for a bit of culture. There are plenty of things to come and three more weekends. The festival is never at its height on the first weekend.

Its interesting that there was not more discussion about how the Mardi Gras Launch was managed. It was quite amazing that they managed to pull it off at such short notice yet that in itself is a reason for concern. Three days prior to the event they had not secured a site. This does not indicate good management, organisational or marketing skills are evident within the "new" organisation. Had it not been for email nobody would have known where it was on. I'm very concerned what the Parade and Party are going to actually be - even considering not attending. Its sad because it looks like Sydney will be the looser - good organisation and marketing have made this event a success and that is simply not there
- Tue 11 Feb 2003 13:13:09
Tue 11 Feb 2003 13:13:09 - re: the late securing of the site etc.

As michael said in his speech, the launch was the last of the big 4 events that NMG wanted to put on. it had the lowest priority after the parade, party and fair day. That's where NMG has put all their efforts.

and that's why NMG only organised thelaunch a week ago. nothing to do with incompetence. just priorities! which for once MG have!
- Tue 11 Feb 2003 13:47:19

I think it was amazingly *good* management that pulled off the success that was the Launch. It worked, and on a very small budget. There just isn't the money available this year to throw around. There wasn't the lead up time available either. And it wasn't just email, as the SSO carried the launch details that week. I think people were expecting a launch to happen and got off their bums enough to look and find out for themselves where and when it was happening. I have no doubt that the Parade and Party will be up to scratch. The last reason I'd *not* attend an event would be for "poor marketing"! MG is gathering momentum. I think Fair Day and from then on, it will be an absolute blast.

ps. Come to Queerscreen! See the great movies! Chat up the spunky vollies! Buy a raffle ticket!
Evil Twin - Tue 11 Feb 2003 14:11:12

To Non PC who makes the comment that the Mardi Gras workshop should have its act together. I suggest you take the time to go down there and lend a hand. I myself am working on a float for this years parade and the amount of sweat, time, weekends, planning and cost that goes into each and every float is beyond words. It would be great if anyone who could spare a few moments on the weekend just to come down lend a hand throw some glitter on a banner or staple a sign to a pole rather than spending time behind the desk top bitching and screaming about how its to late. I can tell you that i will be pinning and glittering on the day and up until we march so its never to late to lend a hand.

The Mardi Gras Launch Management - What a great success!

I think that launch was great, yes it's true that three days prior to the event the site had not been secured. NMG simply did not have the money to pay for a site so negotiations had to be undertaken to secure a free site.
I don’t believe it is the case that management, organisational and marketing skills are lacking within the new organisation. There is only so much that part time volunteers can do - pretty much everybody in New Mardi Gras is a volunteer (myself included) - there is only about 6 paid workers compared to the huge paid staff levels that the old Mardi Gras had.

The organization had a very tight schedule to organise the party, parade, fair day and launch.
I amazed at how well its all going - and it is going very well.

The feedback I've received from people is that they really enjoyed the launch and actually liked the site better than the Opera house steps.

I'm not sure what you expect, how have you helped make the NMG a success?
Before you criticize I suggest you ask yourself how you have helped contribute to the success of Mardi Gras.

One thing I can't stand is whiners who sit on their ass and complain!!

I thought your response to my comments about the poor marketing and organisation of the Launch where indicative of the problem with NMG - people like yourself are too close to the product (mardi gras). You say you feel the organisation is "going well"? What does that mean and by what barometer do you measure this - have you done any true market research or are you making sweeping statements based on the fact you are very busy because you are under resourced?

To the person who posted the message stating that they would pop down to the MG workshop. Thanks you!! That has probably been the most postive thing i have seen posted in a while. Thanks again a least someone out there is willing to give a hand and not just sit back and watch it roll over them then complain that the hot pink paint on the thrid float looked shit and it wasnt up to their expectations what ever they are!!!

One thing I can't stand its bastards who slag off at those who can't join in the fun. We're not all a)unemployed b)able bodied and c)entranced by glue and glitter.

I know what it's like, sweetheart. Desperation, bits of string and chewing-gum and last-minute hysteria hold most Mardi Gras floats together.

All I'm saying is: may I ask whether the Workshop has its act together?

The answer is apparently, yes. But don't spew on me, just for asking.

Festival event----For those who collect or enjoy extraordinary paintings, come to my exhibition at Tap Gallery 278 Palmer st Darlinghurst.
Openong at 6.00pm Monday the 17th of Feb till the 23rd
This show has been put together from works i have done over the last few years as i like to spend a lot of time on my pictures. They are meticulously detailed .Some like to compare my style to the pointelists ,others see an aboriginal influence .and somesee them as handmade images with lots of noise added....There will be paintings of men ,some landscapes and a Queer version of a 19th century painting by Luis Masriera titled the (wild swans) The title of this show LO-FI came from a nick- name which a DJ friend of mine calls me,and seemed appropriate for my layered fuzzy pictures.Top is in Palmer st just off Oxford and is open till 8pm

Ummmmm
Still need more volunteers down at the workshop, guys and girls and make a effort its actually fun and you meet some new friends and get to play with lots of tools. All the workers down there are people not being paid and putting something back into this community, give it a try, it feels good. The time is now, even just for a few hours.

I live near the workshop. This year it seems very, very quiet, compared to previous years. Good luck, our thoughts are with you - even if we haven't the time to spare. Just try not to be defensive when people ask innocent questions. It's a bad look. Don't worry: keep calm! - even if the glitter does fall off your g-string, there'll still be a Parade - and you will have DONE IT!

So - congratulations, encouragement, and in advance, thanks.

OK, so I'm going to complain just this one more time about As You Are.... I just got this in an email from them: "Whilst we have got our DJ list finalized, it is our policy not to reveal the playlist for the evening."
Now that's what I call "finger on the pulse". NOT. More like thumb up the butt if you ask me. Perhaps they're just renting a Juke Box for the evening? I mean how will I know what "things" to take with me. The choice of "things" you take can be very music dependant.

Wow Helena, it's like this major life challenge alright. Right up there with the lack of World Peace and AIDs in Africa. Are you sure you're not being ironic?

I mean, tell us you're a Mardi Float taking the piss out of the deep superficiality of party culture. Please....

Went to the Film festival Launch last night. The speechs went on for a bit too long but each speaker kept it short and to the point. Portia was good fun and John Symonds was a hoot. Loved Pips sparkling red beaded top. Simon Hunt made a special effort to dress up in his best old black faded T-Shirt. The film was good fun too!!

At the after party the Finlandia Vodka was flowing. I must have had about 10 drinks. I hope they keep them as sponsers as I'm growing fond of all that free vodka!

Well done Queerscreen!!!

i went to the underwear party last night at shift, was pretty good. boys were cute and jo jo played a good set too! but cost was $35 ??? all they offered was a plastic garbage bag for cloak check, where as queernation offers multiple dance space and G.A.Y. offers two dance space for $25. can't wait. at least it was a good night and gay. glad it turned out well. thanks guys :)
wonder boy - Sun 16 Feb 2003 12:14:38
I agree with the poster above. I went to gender offender at the opera house last night and I really enjoyed it. Some of the shows were your typical drag numbers, but being a gay man, i have never really had the chance to see a drag KING show. it was quite funny. Kilby and Rollins were great (as always) and it finished up early enough for me to hit the clubs until this morning's wee hours. At least that was one event on the festival calander that I enjoyed. Now I'll just have to see about the rest...

Fair Day was an excellent day. With the threat of rain, early in the day was a good choice of time to attend. Perhaps the crowd was less (partly due to the distraction of a anti war protest somewhere in the city) but who cares. Was it sucesssful ? Who really can a give the answer to that. I thought it was better than recent years. A lesser number of commecrial displays was not a bad thing. Those who went enjoyed room to move, no queues for food or drink, and that most of the stalls were community organisations with time to actually talk to anyone interested in their activities.

Does anyone know how the tickets sales for the party are going??
- Mon 17 Feb 2003 12:48:31
I had a great Fair Day. We got there about 12ish, popped into the Leather Pride stand for a while, then did our shift at the Queerscreen stand. I very much appreciated the cloudy weather, as I would have fried if the sun was out. Caught up with friends, chatted up people, enjoyed an icy beer and went home after the rain. While the rain thinned the crowds out a bit, there were still plenty of people watching the main stage as we left. All good stuff.
Evil Twin - Mon 17 Feb 2003 13:36:07
Fair Day was great!!!! even better without the lack of sun...... a job well done by NMG.. although there was a lack of numbers probably due to the weather and the protest march....... the performers on stage where good .. but where is the competition for best Dyke at fair day? or cutest Femme or Butch... oh well maybe one year so the dykes can cheer holler and wolf whistle.....

Looking forward to mardi Gras......wooohooooo

Stephen Kidman - Tue 11 Feb 2003 23:00:56 Quote "I thought your response to my comments about the poor marketing and organisation of the Launch where indicative of the problem with NMG - people like yourself are too close to the product (mardi gras)....."

Stephen, I don't know a dam thing about marketing (My degree's in Psychology), all I'm saying is there are a lot of people who are doing the dam best to get the thing up and running and it seems to be working. What I am seeing is an organisation with next to no money put on an event that in the past cost a HUGE amount and in a very much compressed time frame. I read today that in the past wages were over 1mil, this time 70K.
I say to you once again, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO HELP NEW MARDI GRAS SUCEED!? Oh I know you've complained on Pink Board.
If you have the Marketing skills that you say NMG is lacking get you ass down to the Erskineville Offices and share some of your brilliance. :-)

To Wonderboy above, the Underwear Party is an annual non profit, community based party by invitation only. Numbers are capped for comfort and safety. What you get is a fun quality party with top DJs, an excellent show all done by volunteers, the latest sound and laser lighting. More importantly you have guest list of Sydney's finest men. Feel pleased that you were included. From my acquaintance with the organisers I am sure that if you contact them they will let you in next year for nothing, if you feel that badly done by!

dj from melbourne - Tue 18 Feb 2003 23:22:06 NSW licensing law prohibits "indecent behaviour" in licensed premises and licensees can be fined and/or lose their licences if they're found to be in breach. It's always been a bit of a minefield getting all the interested parties onside with designated party sex spaces - Police, Owner, Event Manager/licensee, organiser, crowd etc but things have taken a turn for the worse recently.

Two parties recently held in the Centennial Park Trust Pavilions - the Gay Games "Black" and Pride's NYE Party - caused problems. The first had no designated sex spaces so guys just did it anyway - as they do - and pretty much anywhere. Pride had a Scenic Maze which the Licensing Police closed down after what seems to have been "crossed wires" and some residual flak about the Black experience.

The site Event Manager, Playbill, is obviously less than enthusiastic about the potential for further problems. I understand that NMG is trying to come up with an innovative approach that meets everyone's expectations....
- Wed 19 Feb 2003 09:27:24

Went to my queer career last night.

Overall pretty damn fine. However I have to say how did the film "Invitation" even make it through the first cull!!! It was woeful and I understand that it was an attempt at farce (wasn't it???) but farce is an art form of precision and wit. It was so bad ...cringe beyond beleif.... well not quite because there was a contingent of screaming friends and cast members and at the end it won a prize.

But before I get in trouble for being negative all of the other films were great particularly techniquely - some of the art direction and photography was superb...(the visitor/Contact/Pornstar) and editiing (fugue, Boys ) and others clever and subtle(Lilian & I / Pornstar/ Homos) and funny (Glory/Homos).
- Wed 19 Feb 2003 10:22:50

I know that the quality of acting and script for Invitation was not all that good but for some reason I enjoyed it. It was just a bit of throw away fun. I like the idea of parents getting sick of waiting for their kids to come out and I know of a few real examples. I think The Visitor and Contact were the best and they both won prizes.

Press Release

Mardi Gras Festival Harbour Party To Raise $40,000 For AIDS Trust OF Australia.

On February 23, 2003 Sydney’s usually peaceful expanse of green, the Royal Botanic Gardens, will transform into Azure 2003: Sydney’s Harbourside Party (formerly the Harbour Party), the Mardi Gras Festival’s most glamorous event. At 4pm, the gates will open to the 5000 ticket holders and this year over $40,000 from ticket sales goes to the AIDS Trust of Australia.

“The AIDS Trust relies entirely on donations for it to carry out its vital role in society. Azure allows people to have a wonderfully unique and fun time in the knowledge that others will benefit.” says AIDS Trust Governor and CEO, Terry Trethowan.

Famous DJ talents Nervous (of Plastic and Transition fame) Paul Goodyear and Mandy Rollins will present sets of their own unique and celebratory sounds - this year Paul Goodyear features, among other exclusive tracks, a remix of Whitney Houston’s “On My Own” - to be played for the first time at Azure 2003. Richard Weiss and Jake Kilby will also be playing.

The sumptuous waterfront outdoor venue will feature Bar Azure, a lounge bar graciously hosted by the Parisienne Doyen of Glamour herself, Mademoiselle Claire de Lune, star of Channel V’s Room 208

Pop duo Shakaya will perform their Top Ten hits “Cinderella” and “Stop Calling Me” on the Fleet Steps.

Following Azure 2003, the official afterparty Strangelove will follow at Gas Nightclub. Produced by N V Events, DJ talents Mark Dynamix and Kelly Lynch will carry punters through the night in a surreal environment dripping with the elegance and glamour of the French artist salons.

The Harbour Party has grown to become one of the most anticipated features on the international gay calendar let alone the Sydney Mardi Gras Festival. Organisers, Iris Group Productions have worked tirelessly to ensure that Azure 2003: Sydney’s Harbourside Party is set to take this year’s production to new heights.

Hey! I heard that there are no gay or queer security looking after us this year at the party, only the black-shirted concert security people. What happened to all those gay security people? Were they employed by the old MG? Why didn't they get asked back? Surely we need them if the tix are being sold openly.

my degree is in marketing and I can't afford the time to voulenteer for Mardi Gras. My comments were meant to be constructive. Mardi Gras is a wonderful product which will only survive if the balance of Community and Commercial event is maintained. Open yourself to the concept that to be commercial is not bad and maybe one day you will be able to afford me
stephen kidman - Thu 20 Feb 2003 14:22:43
Colin

When NMG can afford to pay for the time and expertise necessary for a better-than-good job to be done by quality people with the requisite training and experience, that is when the quality people will return. No money for quality people? I don't think a Psychologist can afford to give up weeks and not get paid for any of their expertise. I know I can't. At the moment, though, kudos for keeping it going, albeit it in an operationally (as evidenced by the 'Launch') poorer sense.
Another professional in the community - Thu 20 Feb 2003 15:50:17

Rumour has it that a sex space will be set up in the coach carpark behind where the cloakroom is at Mardi Gras. Will this therefore be legal as it is outside the licensed areas??
- Thu 20 Feb 2003 18:01:09
Actually i think the marketing for the launch was exceptional, considering the venue was only secured 3 days before the event. 10,000 people came to the launch, and came to the right place. Considering NMG has next to nothing for a marketing budget i think the volunteers looking after this have done a great job, and should i remind you that no-one is getting paid for their efforts. Being a commercial entity is fine if you can afford it, until then you have to make do with what you have. In NMG case, it's sweat and the smell of a oily rag.

I wish i had put up my hand to help this year - it would have given me more satisfaction seeing mardi gras succeed than spending time in long boozy lunches working on a brand that means little to people, but has the money to make it so in your face.
another marketer - Thu 20 Feb 2003 18:36:37

coach carpark is not 'outside of the licensed areas' as the licence for the MG parties is a special licence that includes the entire site... hence why you can buy an alcoholic drink in the RHI or Hordern and then move around the party site with it (apart from places like City Live that operate under their own licence)...

and if you put the backroom there it would be far too light... (white tent, overhead safety lighting...)

guess you'll have to be more imaginative (if you could get the cable ties off the light fittings in the toilets, you could take out the fluoro tubes and make the whole space more 'inviting'...)
- Thu 20 Feb 2003 20:31:54

Why do people keep on expecting other people to supply safe sex packs? Are we not adults who can reason that if there is even a small chance of having sex at Mardi Gras then we should bring safe sex packs in order to stay healthy?

What the hell do stupid people do when the opportunity for sex arises in daily life where safe sex packs aren't supplied? I suppose we should lobby the government to make sure that plenty of safe sex packs are available on every street corner because I'm completely incompetent of looking after myself.

And if your answer is that dance parties have a culture in which alcohol and drugs impair people's judgements, then isn't this all the more reason NOT to have an designated sex spaces?

When will people realise that celebrating our sexuality is not the same thing as having sex at every opportunity?

Is there a Malcolm Stewart party on this year. If so, where is my invite????

Expect a big contingent of guys from Singapore and Bangkok at this year's party.

Know quite a few coming and I think the fridae website is promoting Sydney very well in the Asian region.

Also seems to be quite a few guys trying to make Sydney contacts on gaydar.

If tomclub and cockwise are typical of the guys visiting, then I can't wait.

- Fri 21 Feb 2003 10:45:25

I thought Azure was fundraising for the gay and lesbian rights lobby, 2010 and the counselling service. Why is the AIDS Trust suddenly getting money? My understanding is that Harbour Party was set up to fundraise for the lobby and this if the first I've heard about money going to groups other than three mentioned. Nothing against the AIDS Trust, but it is important that gay and lesbian groups don't always lose out to HIV&AIDS charities, especially with community event fundraisers!!

Can someone from Azure please clarify this?
- Fri 21 Feb 2003 19:15:07

Why are so many Sydney guys trying to sell Azure? We three boys from Berlin have arrived here to party at Azure and it seems we may have to do so amongst ourselves.
3 berlin boys - Fri 21 Feb 2003 19:25:10
Yeah, what is this about the AIDS trust getting money from the Azure party ?
ISNT this is the organisation that has permanent paid collectors roaming the streets, asking for donations ? A move that has prompted many community and non-community members to say NO to all requests for donations. 1- Because some people are asked almost daily and 2- Because only a part of every dollar donated gets to the cause the donor intends it to be recieved by.
Like with Mardi Gras people appreciate the efforts of true volunteers, who believe in what they are doing, not those, like as can be read from the commments of SK (maybe one day you will be able to afford me) above would only assist if there was a financial reward for themselves.
And no dont ask what have I done, because I havent volunteered with MG. But I have been supportive and have paid to attend events I might not have normally, and gave an extra gold coin on Fair Day.
- Sat 22 Feb 2003 08:17:48
I could not agree more with the above comments about the AIDS Trust getting money from Azure. What's going on? How much is the lobby getting?
It looks like yet another example of this organisation getting money out of Sydney poofs and dykes and sending it everywhere but Sydney and NSW.
Did you know that the AIDS Trust did not even give BGF a cent last financial year?
who is getting the money? - Sat 22 Feb 2003 10:46:08
Just picked up a copy of the Mardi Gras cd. Faaabulous track-listing. Disc 1 has some older 'anthems' and disc 2 current tracks. Congrats to New Mardi Gras.........all appears to be running to plan.....

I just got back from the Solarium and a few different people told me they heard Azure has been postponed until next sunday. is this true ? can we please get an offical statement ?
GC - Sun 23 Feb 2003 12:20:32
The Azure web site warns " Azure is an all weather event. Please dress appropriately"

The weather forecast for sunday was quite clear & correct on thursday when the press release came out so I'd doubt that they would postpone unless there were safety concerns or severe equipment failure.

Will check sources & get back to you just in case!
Iceboy - Sun 23 Feb 2003 12:59:36

Just heard from very reliable source (Crew member)that Azure ISN'T postponed:

"No Way (is it postponed)....It's on."

So just evil gossip or guesswork or chinese whispers about postponement.

Get your raincoats ready!
I guess there will be substantial cover over the dance floor to protect the equipment and stop dance floor turning into a skating rink so don't panic too much about it. ( haven't asked anyone about this though, just presuming)

There are many reasons to support the big party in 2003 - aside from the fact that it's going to be (as always) one of the biggest and best kick arse nights of the year. It's time for us all to take a stand and support our festival, our parade, our fair day and our party. The $95 ticket price will get you more than a wicked night, it will also be a valued and worthwhile donation to the future of GLBTIQ visibility and rights in Sydney, Australia and the world. Don't miss it.
- Sun 23 Feb 2003 14:16:38
re: iceboy

just been down to look at azure site, there is NO roof on dancefloor, no cover at all, so if the forecast is right and "rain periods easing in the afternoon but increasing again tonight" dress to get wet.

im in two minds, risk a cold for the big event next week, or dancing in the rain tonight....

Your congratulations to New Mardi Gras over the 2003 Mardi Gras CD are extremely misdirected.

All the hard background work on compiling this Cd and the track selection was done by staff (and friends of staff) of Central Station Records. I was one of the "friends of staff" who supplied master copies of many of those tracks on CD#1. New Mardi Gras had nothing to do with the Cd except for the supplying of the artwork and agreeing to the selected tracks.

Please direct your congratulations to the nameless people who helped with this cd who rather thoughtlessly didnt get a credit for their efforts on the artwork of the cd - but that was central stations fault and not New Mardi Gras.

And yes , it is a rather fabbbbbulous collection of mainstream anthems !

In the words of our missing friend countdown boy There is now only 6 days to go !!! 6 days to go !!!

Its now 10.30pm on Sunday night and Ive been in my room since about 6pm, I'm just about to go to bed and ive looked out the window (the curtains have been drawn all night) and its raining cats and dogs outside my Surry Hills home. Its really raining HARD !

My thoughts go out to all the silly people at Azure and I just let go a little giggle to myself.

Mmmmm - my dooner awaits, good night. zzzzzzzzzzz

I wonder if all those trying to sell tickets did so because of possible rain?
Pitty because the weather turned out to be perfect for dancing...

typical of mardi gras - they get all the plaudits for the 2003 cd yet they do nothing in the way of the compilation of it.

Who are all these "nameless" heros that put it together ? They need to be acknowledged.

Does anyone know if there's been a big response from the breeders in relation to tickets for the after party? I know a few friends who are not going because of the "straight-girl" contingency. has anyone else heard if there's a lot of straights going this year as opposed to last?
- Mon 24 Feb 2003 17:57:55
all the "breeders" that I know of (that usually go to the party) arent going this year. now, I aint talking about a couple. I'm talking about a lot ! they arent going cause jake kilby isnt playing at the party

I heard a rumour on the weekend that Anastasia is doing a song. She is on the Mardi Gras CD.

How do you pick a 'straight girl' - Mon 24 Feb 2003 17:57:55 - people often think a lot of the girls we go with are 'straight' maybe because they don't look stereotypically gay - whatever that is. Point is what you think is straight maybe gayer than you. Leave your judgements at the door of the MG party.
Straight looking boy with the straight looking girls who are all gay!! - Mon 24 Feb 2003 22:02:36
Anastasia is currently having treatment for breast cancer and is not making any public appearances. It has been widely reported in the press.Could we have some more imaginative suggestions please.

well done straight looking boy... it's people like mon 24 Feb 2003 17:57:55 which make it harder for straight looking gay girls to come out. With comments like these within a community you think would be supportive, how do expect people to want to come out and join you! Have a great mardi gras everyone! You should all be celebrating during this time instead of bickering! ...I'll be looking on from the side lines during MG ... and straight boy, where are all your girls???! :)

I think that you should stop using insulting language like "breeders". I'm sure you wouldn't like it if people referred to you as a faggot when asking if there'll be any faggots in my school, or workplace or party etc.

oh and by the way, many of us don't have a problem with "breeders", in fact many of my closest and dearest "breeders", just as well as I might never have been born into this world as me.

Harbour Party was a blast - really liked the Chill area even though I was only there for an hour. This kind of innovation is sadly missing from the Mardi Gras Party. The success of the Harbour Party and the fact is a totally commercial event is such a contrast to Mardi Gras with its bleeding heart comunity members and all their political and personal agendas. I'm considering missing Mardi Gras completely as I'm already hearing excuses that it will be second rate because they don't have any money - will the gay "community" be mugs as usual and pay through the nose because they feel they must be supportive because its the 25th year?
Stephen Kidman - Tue 25 Feb 2003 10:32:59
Rumour is that the "special guest" for mardi gras will be a couple of old drag queens that you can see at the imperial any night of the week - can't wait!

Bit of a sleep and then i am being deported back to Aoteroa :(

See ya on the dancefloor
BND - Tue 25 Feb 2003 11:21:29

Stephen Kidman - Tue 25 Feb 2003 10:32:59 Azure was indeed a blast. It went off all night. Particulary impressive when the party was only given to Iris late last year. Can't wait to see what they do with a bit more leadin time next year.

It also raised funds for important community organisations. Good times and good causes are not mutually exclusive. I havent heard any excuses about MG Party and my impression from being at the workshop is that more effort than ever is being put into it as NMG is well aware of its importance for its future. Looks like it will be a lot more glam than in past years. This is probably partly why tickets are selling so well as word gets around. Money has indeed been saved but I very much doubt the fact that DJs are working for free, for example, will stop them putting their heart and soul into what they do on the night.
Kathy Sant - Tue 25 Feb 2003 11:24:07

I'm far too upset to go to the party this week.

I'm trying to deal with the death of Taylor Forrester in the Bold and the Beautiful.

I will never forgive Sheila for killing her.
- Tue 25 Feb 2003 11:38:34

Whatever term you use .... it will be interesting what type of people will be at the party given the open ticketing. I know gay and straight not going because of this very reason.

I am gay and going but do so will a level of wonder what it will be like.
- Tue 25 Feb 2003 13:05:16

The party crowd will be fine. it is not the case that there are all these dodgy straight people clamouring to go to the party. Mardi Gras could have done away with the ticketing system ages ago. Anyone can buy tickets for the likes of Azure or Queer Nation, yet the mix of the crowd there is great. Maybe a couple of drunken yobbos after the parade has ended might think it would be an idea to go to the party, but as long as they don't sell tickets at the door, they won't be able to get in. I wasn't overly excited about MG this year, but the brilliance of Azure and then Arq has put me TOTALLY in the mood.
- Tue 25 Feb 2003 14:35:18
Kathy Sant
thanks for your comments confirming the community donations made by the Azure party.

Regarding NMG - the DJ's shouldn't be working for free, they are creative professionals that should be paid just like anybody else. If the "community" faction that dominates has dominated Mardi Gras in recent years had any commercial business sense there would be money in the bank to pay these people.
What is being done to set up a trust that New Mardi Gras can draw from so they are not in this position in future. No business runs for 25 years without bad years so why should Mardi Gras think it can be any different. Yes continue to support the community yet put the proceeds in a trust that can provide an income that can be donated to "community" charities and pay the people that work at the organisation/party/parade what they are worth. Surely this is just common sense?

would love to see azure finish at 1 or 2am, but I don't think they could get the licence. it was a very cool party with an up and happy crowd, but I could have done without the live performance by those skanky american wannabe's. they had no business being there, slowing things down. richard wilkins manages them - enough said. thanks to the promoters for the extra toilets at the bottom of the hill! I'm amazed the weather stayed clear, but was worried by the complete lack of cover if it had rained. mandy you rocked, thanks babe. gas sucked afterwards, but the shift made up for it. a great night all round...thanks.

is andrews big sister attempting to be funny by poo-poohing all those people who were moaning about azure before the event or what? clearly, it was NOT raining cats and dogs in Surry Hills on Sunday night, seeing that it turned into a beautiful evening down at Mrs Mac's chair! Too many people on this message board seem to actively WANT parties they are not going to to be a disaster. Get over it!

Along with anyone else, I thought Azure was stunning; one of the best Harbour Parties ever. The night was perfect, the music was varied and great, the crowd happy and beautiful. Everyone I bumped into at the party and then at the gym last night was raving about it. People who post messages here seem to be the type of people to moan and whinge, and are not really reflective of the population at large.

I agree that Gas was boring. Got to Arq about 2am and it was packed to the rafters with absolutely gorgeous boys! Excellent fun.

PS: Shakaya are Australian

Mardi Gras media coverage? I know that the main stream media pretends its not happening yet in the past the SMH and ABC have at least provided some coverage -does NMG have any PR working on this? Next week is too late if you want to sell tickets for this years event. I'm sure the SMH would be interested in doing a feature from the "survivor" angle - they gave some Bisexual Party promoter a whole page in last week end. I'm trust the good management at NMG is working on this as we speak?

A very reliable source has advised me that Kerri-Anne is doing the closing number in the RHI - this is going to be one classy show!
- Wed 26 Feb 2003 09:56:01
It's almost PARTY TIME

I love Mardi Gras ... I have always loved Mardi Gras ... here's why ..

For me it's not about the politics or the money or the bitchfest that some people love to make it, although I do sincerely appreciate the effort and sacrifice that everybody associated with the event puts into it.

For me it's about being with all my good friends, dancing for 3 days bent, and hearing norty hook up stories, spending 4 weeks shopping for something to wear and buying something 10 minutes before Mephisto closes that I first saw 4 weeks ago, having coffee on Oxford St with a set of score cards, making fun of the street cleaners staring at the lesbians walking back from the party 10:00 Sunday morning, booking a hotel room for the whole weekend at $200 a night and using it once to do my hair when I should have just rented a U-STOW-IT, losing my friends at 4:30 in the morning in the Horden and finding them at 5:20 in the Dome, it's like a mini family renunion, getting Monday off work swearing to God that this year I will make it in on Tuesday, getting REALLY excited because rumour has it that Kylie's doing a duet with Madonna for the final show, laughing at all the 'OVER-IT''s I come across and watching the faces of the 18 year old Mardi Gras virgins seeing the RHI for the first time, bless their little, throbing, hearts.

I wish everybody a happy and ballistic Mardi Gras.

YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!

I'm well aware of the SMH coverage since the launch, its hardly good PR.Look at this week?- Its pretty thin for a major event.

Take todays SMH for example- an article about dykes on bikes? Does this style of corney old fashioned, patronising, hetrosexual curiosity article really create a contemporary image for Mardi Gras?Stimulate interest - its a bit tired, surely they can do better than this. The younger end of the "community" certainly does not relate to this. Boring ,Boring ,Boring!!!!!

Does anybody under 35 know who the Village People are?

As a young gay(22)identifying male, i firmly beleive New Mardi Gras has to look to the future, and has made real efforts to do so. the old model failed. a new political/party/ movement is needed to carry the torch forward.

While it is maybe not important in the broad scheme of things, I think it would be a poor symbol of a vibrant new future, if NMG party was to be headlined by the Village People, an act so old that my mum and dad like them.

I will be there supporting the brave DJ decisions, but not looking for stereoypes destructive of a new inclusive 3rd millenium community.

Symbols are important
looking forward - Wed 26 Feb 2003 21:31:53

I'm quite certain that I read somewhere from NMG that the party would feature "2 international divas". I can't for the life of me remember where I read it. Did they email it out to old members? I deleted the email.
How about Suzanne Palmer and Dina Vass?

Mardi Gras media release this week...

MEDIA RELEASE - 25 FEBRUARY 2003

Extra Party Tickets Released
New Mardi Gras today announced the release of an extra 2,000 tickets to the 2003 Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party on Saturday March 1.

"Ticket sales have been well above what we expected so we are now happy to announce the release of an additional 2,000, tickets and expanding the size of the party," said New Mardi Gras Party Co-Chair Jock McKeon.

"We expect to sell about 17,000 tickets and with this level of demand for party tickets we are now able to confirm that the Dome will be included as a chill-out space with lounges and laid back music.

"The Dome will also be a great venue for the Costume Pageant which will be hosted this year by Lance Leopard and Victoria Bitter.

"You can register for the Costume Pageant from 10pm with the show getting underway at the stroke of midnight when we hope to find a Cinderella and not too many pumpkins.

"Party tickets are on sale to non-Mardi Gras members and can be purchased through Ticketek online, over the phone or any Ticketek outlet including the cnr of Elizabeth and Park Sts and Fish Records in Newtown.

"A limited number of tickets will be available at the door on the night but we would urge people to purchase their tickets beforehand so they are not disappointed.

"New Mardi Gras is now busy at Fox Studios bumping in the for the party - lighting, sets and shows that will make for a exciting night to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras," Mr McKeon said.

I brought my MG party tickets today and its says 11500 on the ticket. Im presuming this means 11500 sold so far as its been the case in past parties.
Does this include the 2000 or so sold before MG collapsed on the early bird price? If not then I guess its true that over 13,000 tickets have been sold.

To looking forward, re does anybody under 35 know who Village People are, just go to retro night at the Shift some Sunday night. As someone (just) over 35 who enjoys the VP, I am constantly amazed how many under 22yo's, not just under 35's can sing along to the VP and a lot more 70's artists, and be word perfect.

But for those who are speculating, the VP are performming at 9pm in Melbourne, so whilst a midnight flight to Sydney aint impossible, dont expect to see them in the MG parade.

If VP were really going to be at the party it would be in NMG interests to promote the fact. Me, a sometimes I go to a dance party, this time I wont be (I dont think) type, would be persauded to go if I knew a group/performer/DJ I like where going to be there.

has anyone worked out exactly what type of music doug james plays ? he's in the critical middle spot & I think it's pretty risky putting an unknown dj in that possition. someone told me he plays "baby bear style hardhouse" oh god I hope not. anyone ?

rawboi - Thu 27 Feb 2003 01:19:24 I remember that VP closed MG as the final show a few years back. If they were to do it again, it could make the midnight flight thing look a bit more likely. But Jeez....how would they stay awake all night ...................?

I assume your a "community member" otherwise you would not be attempting to censor my comments. This fascist approach to open discussion is why Mardi Gras is in the position it is today. Perhaps you should call yourself Ostrich Eye as your head in firmly buried in the sand

Is the NMG parade going to be open entry on the day? This could be a bit dangerous - does anybody watch the parade other than westies and chinese girls?

stephen Kidman - Thu 27 Feb 2003 11:57:12

Funny isn't it that it's OK for Stephen Kidman to slag off NMG but as soon as someone criticises him, it's suddenly "censorship" and a "fascist approach". Stop being so precious Kidman.

yoyo, The Village people are playing next weekend at Canterbury-Hurlstone Park RSL. They are asking for $66 a ticket, which is laughable if you ask me. We decided not to go after finding out the price!!
Davo - Thu 27 Feb 2003 13:36:23
Rachel Aurbun, Fergie & (possibly) doug james etc ... hideous "music". I hate that soulless pommie hard house rubbish. maybe that middle dj set will be a nice time to go for a wander outside ?

A question for "Those in the know" and "Friend on the Board" about ticket sales.

How were the sales during the membership realease compared to the general release from Feb 1?
Interested - Thu 27 Feb 2003 16:28:41

Dear Afro Puff - does everyone you know have the same tastes ? same opinions ?
Rachel Auburn was fantastic at Mardi Gras - their style of hardhouse to me
and I think the many thousands in the Hordern at the time- was the best. Please do go for a wonder in that middle set. Frowning faces / whingers wont be in vogue at that particular time but you are right............if you dont like it move to another Hall.
So please remember everyones tastes vary, and if they dont agree with yours, it doesn't necessarily mean they are rubbish.

On another note, have heard the usual promoters of Queens Birthday Party no longer putting on the party. Would NMG like to take it over ? nothing wrong with some extra $'s ........last years party still seemed to have good numbers ?
Gimme Rachel Auburn anytime - Thu 27 Feb 2003 18:31:31

so... in today's star there is a half page article on pam ayres...so what? who cares? unless there it has something to do with the party. Maybe the dome will play host to a very special show this yea
