2nd March

Welcome to Pinkboard's 2002 Mardi Gras Graffiti Wall 2.

Last night was the most inspirational festival launch for many years. There were three (yes 3) amazing speeches. The rain and hail only cleaned up before and did nothing to dampen the occasion, though it did dampen the numbers a bit.

First up Julie Regan, President, reminded us of the erosion of our rights during the last last year and the community that we are part of.

Then Mark Tewksbury, olympic gold medalist, told us that he won those medals because he found he had an inner strength that his competitors didn't have (as far as we know) that comes from growing up gay in a hostile world.

Nan McGregor regaled us with her courage in standing up to George Pell (when he was in Melbourne) wearing a rainbow sash in support of her gay son.

The launch finished with the choir singing Climb Every Mountain, reminding us that our fights are not over yet, especially with bigots like George Pell now in Sydney.

Slightly off-topic I suppose but since his name has already tainted the place ... don't ever mistake George Pell for a bigot. His gay bashing in the media is very very coldly calculated. The man has his eye on becoming a cardinal and knows that gay bashing earns a lot of kudos with the current regime in Rome. Beating his competitors to the prize of Sydney was a dream come true because now, particularly through Mardi Gras, the Sydney gay and lesbian community will provide his stepping stone to more media attention, more gay bashing and ultimately more power. And the struggle for more power is what the heirarchy of the Catholic Church is really all about. Better to ignore dear old Dr Pell if you can resist the temptation.

3 weeks to go !!!!!! YAY !!!!!!!!!!

I would just like to say how happy I am that Mark Tewksbury was guest speaker of Mardi Gras this year. In the course of my work I get to hear a lot of motivational speakers (and over the olympics got to hear just about every ex. athlete on the speaking circut) but Marks' speach last nite was truly inspirational. He had me and the crowd laughing one second and then deadly silent the next. Hearing him speak reminded me of what it was like to be in the closet and be so scared of comming out, something that is now so foreign and almost unbelievable. Anyone who wasn't there last night really missed out. The rest of the opening was also great, perhaps a bit long but there was lots of content for everyone. In other matters the I have had my ear to the asphalt and my MG rumours are Olivia Newton John, Samantha Cox and probably Tina Arena. Guess we just have to wait ta see if their tru............ P.S Pool Party should be fun tonight.
BND (and so it begins :) - Sat 9 Feb 2002 17:55:09

I only wanna be with you - Sun 10 Feb 2002 02:32:24
I hate to tell you this countdown boy, but Sam Fox (yes the same one) announced her impending 'marriage' to her manager, Myra Stratton, last year. She's a dyke, after all that page 3 stuff and all. But I'm sure BND meant Deborah ....

After 9 Coronas last nite I got no idea wot I mean lol. Pool Party was lotsa fun. Good crowd with lots of very cute guys (and gals). I had forgotten how much I like Speedos!!!!! It was good to go out and have a bit of a boogie without the alcohol, cigarette smoke and attitude. Kate played a great set with good fun music. Production was excellent especially the sound that was crisp and clear the whole night, but can we get speakers underwater next year please? (I want to see Damon EQ those! lol) It was also good to see the GLLOs there in uniform and looking very sexy, they looked as they were having fun too; one of the perks I suppose for what is otherwise often a thankless job. The water wasn’t that cold once u got in but most people seemed to just want to dance. On a scale of 1-10 I would give it a 9. Recovery at the Shift wasn’t too bad either but by then I was getting a bit tired. Going to Fluffer at the film festival on Wednesday and can’t wait for Reserection next week at GAS. Are u going Countdown Boy? Will you finally reveal who u are? (I think there will be lots of revealing going on J ). If ya need an invite Countdown Boy I might just be able to help *wink* Also thinking about Resident Alien as the culture content for the season.

Hay people. I'm looking for a party to go to after the Parade. Not "THE" party, though. I'm looking for something a bit cosy, yet where I can dance if I want. A young, cute croud would also help. Can anyone suggest anything?

I agree with panther - the Launch was inspiring and it was amazing to be there with all the storm clouds circling and clear sky above. Loved the Party video (shows and lighting shots) on the big screen set to Blood is Pumping (Voodoo and Serano). Fergie played it in City Live last year and it was my 2001 highlight. Can't wait to March 2!!!
tasty - Mon 11 Feb 2002 15:17:52
Chinese New Year was a lot of fun. Very laid back. Niced mixed crowd - gays and dykes. Maybe time for a "formula" change. Funny hearing Sveta playing S Club 7 -betcha she loved that. Little Blue Cloud was as fabulous as ever.
Hung like a horse - Mon 11 Feb 2002 15:37:43
EC I agree with you on the Pell issue, to attack the Catholic church in the manner that MG is doing is problimatic at best. Catholic Gays and Lesbians at times may need to make a choice as to weather the Catholic version of christianity is right for them.
Mycle - Mon 11 Feb 2002 19:36:12
DJ's ! Keep the RHI commercial , DONT go all tribally crap please
popboy - Mon 11 Feb 2002 21:47:23
Popboy, you have Sean Manley and Jake Kilby (sorry Mycle, the fan club lives on) in the RHI. I don't think you will find two more commercial DJ's. I can't imagine why you would even begin to worry. I'm sure there will be enough commercial music dished out for us.
C.R. - Mon 11 Feb 2002 23:52:25
did anyone get the feeling that the launch has just turned into one big ad? Yes we know the festival is happening and we know about all the events - no need to plug them over and over and over again! Thank god for Mark Tewksbury - he single handedly (in my opinion) saved the launch from being a shody embarassment - what with the bad sound, bad speeches, rude people using the musical interludes as their toilet break and drunked dykeswandering onto the stage. Mark's honesty and charisma were a pleasure to see - gave me faith that there still are nice people in our community - despite most poeple's opinion on this wall.

hay, does any gay organisation distribute safe sex packs at the party? like packs of condoms and lube? jes wondering..
2guys28melb - Tue 12 Feb 2002 02:32:20
Dear 2guys28melb, Yes ACON will distribute these packs. There is also a stall that you can go to and pick your necessities for the night. Hope you find the info useful.

2guys28melb - Tue 12 Feb 2002 01:32:20 --- YES is your answer , DEFINITELY YES !

C.R. - Mon 11 Feb 2002 22:52:25 : you dont get what im trying to say. The RHI should be commercial ALL NIGHT not just some of it. All the other halls have a musical style for the whole night yet I fear that the American DJ Neil Lewis and then Paul Goodyear will steer off in a different direction when Kilby finishes at 4am. I hope im wrong , but somehow I doubt it.

So what's considered commercial, Top 40? C'mon guys (and gals) not all of us are concerned if it's the commercial stuff played. There is a load more non-released tracks by known acts and unknown out there. Live a little! Play a little and give a little! I am sure that either way we are going to enjoy. Besides there more to the party than just the music!
Jayse - Tue 12 Feb 2002 17:59:50
I will be grateful to whoever performs at the party, on stage and in the DJ booth. I am sure that either way it will be a delight to everyone in whatever state they find themselves in!

Look out for me in the RHI if Samantha Fox ( old slapper from way back)comes on stage. I'll be the one spewing my guts out, bringing everyone drugs down... I sincerely hope that the rumour about her is piffle. Deborah Cox will be here.... it is assured.

Well I have just scoured the SSO and here are the juicy bits for Mardi Gras! Party performers confirmed are Deborah Cox and Alcazar, a Swedish pop group. Yes the rumours about Olivia are still flying - no confirmation on that one!! Interesting also to see that JJJ may cover the party live!! Has anyone trecked to Manly for the Speedo exhibition - if so was it good?
Ozfritz - Thu 14 Feb 2002 13:22:18
FYI ----> Alcazar have had a huge dance / pop track called “Crying at the Discotech” over the last few months. The 2nd single called “Sexual Guarantee” has just come out. The guy who sings in Alcazar is from 90’s pop band “Army of Lovers” (Remember: “I’m Crucified” ) !! I cant say that they would be a good choice for a show at MG but then again MG have been getting a bit cheap lately in their show decisions. I heard from a good source that EMI / Virgin Records in Australia offered the services of Emma Bunton (Baby Spice) to sing her current single “We’re not gonna sleep Tonight”. Apparently nothing ever eventuated from the discussion… which is a shame. But then again, I’m not at all interested in shows anymore !
Countdownboy@hotmail.com - Thu 14 Feb 2002 15:29:39

Doesn't surprise me that Ministry of Sound is sneakily marketing off Mardi Gras' name. Everybody else in town is! No wonder Mardi Gras are doing it hard. Shame of promoters and venues not supporting Mardi Gras.

You should try living with someone who does "shows" to Starship. Try hearing We Built This City on high rotation. Or "Wired For Sound". Are there people in the speedos at Manly? When will Speedo release a latex version?

Is it true the total cost for Frankie Knuckles is around $60,000 ? ie fees, hotels, airfares etc ?
True or False ? - Fri 15 Feb 2002 11:06:04
If Frankies fees are $60 000, I doubt that MG are footing the bill. He came out here to play Tank & Harbour Party. He was only approached by MG to play at the party when it became evident that he was still going to be around for the parade & party.

This is the opinion of the poster.
Is this the first time that MG has actually advertised who is performing at a party ie Deborah? And is it true that song sheets will be handed out on the night so everyone will sing along to "Nobody's supposed To Be Here"??
How did she get here? - Fri 15 Feb 2002 14:10:29
Dear True or False, That figure sounds correct. I don't know if people realise but the cost of bringout out international DJ's is huge! A case in point John Digweed played in Sydney for NYE at a bargain-basement price of $125,000 per hour! My personal view -not worth it! 2 reasons - plenty of local talent around & it takes the funds away from party production.

Just like to wish Everyone a fabulous, fun, festive, frivolous and Foughtful (of all those that are no longer here to join us) Mardi Gras! BobbyD - Fri 15 Feb 2002 15:14:15
Fri 15 Feb 2002 12:40:47, you are assuming that MG pays full fees for its guest DJs. Many in the past have been happy to just donate their services.

Email sent to Star Observer & CC SGLMG ----
I’ve been told of a situation where certain overseas DJ’s are being selected to play at Mardi Gras events and are being paid ridiculous amounts of money to play. Theres a rumour floating around that the total package to fly out Frankie Knuckles for this years Mardi Gras party runs into the multiple 10's of 1000's of dollars. I strongly object to this ! Every DJ does the same job and all should be paid equally. It is a huge insult to Sydneys highly talented DJ’s to be given a lesser pay rate against the so call big name DJ’s who more often than not have been a huge let down and havent been half as good as the local boys and girls. The extra amounts of money saved by paying all DJ’s equally could be better spent on party production or more worthwhile purposes than lining the pockets of blow in then out of towners ! As a member of Mardi Gras I’d be keen to find out the exact amounts paid to these DJ’s , but I’m sure I wouldn’t be allowed access to this controversial information which only in my opinion exacerbates the situation by shrouding this topic in secrecy. I don’t object to overseas DJ’s being selected to play at Mardi Gras but let them play under the same pay & working conditions as locals as well as having to pay for their own way of getting here. If they dont like that, then move on and invite someone else who will. Fairness and equality is all that I'm asking for.
Shane - Fri 15 Feb 2002 17:20:50
God I love these stupid stories that get around. As if the cost for Frankie Knuckles is $60,000 +. He's not THAT much of a draw card here. I don't think DJs have quite overtaken movie stars yet, however much of a tizz some of you get yourselves into over them. I'd love to see the books for the evidence that John Digweed cost $125,000 an hour as well. Pffft. The Emma Bunton story may well not be crap. She's hardly a drawcard however, the song is too bland for words and, what's more, when these people call Mardi Gras to offer their services, that kind offer comes with a price tag.
EC - Fri 15 Feb 2002 17:27:15

see! HARD28 was right about Deborah Cox..... The story on FRANKIE KNUCKLES.... They have gone in with Harbour Party to sahre the costs.... The Harbour Party organisers approached Mardi Gras... Deboarah Cox will also perform Absolutely Not. ( and she won't be going to work in a mini skirt)

Thanks of replies - even if they are splitting the costs between Tank, Harbour, MG parties etc , I would be very pissed if I was a local DJ. Would prefer to give those guys $500 per hour or a lump sum of say $2,000 than fork out the $'s for 1 DJ who is only playing in City Live. Whats the UK gal and the US boy costing ?

Chiclet - Fri 15 Feb 2002 19:08:41
This is the opinion of the poster.
Reading this wall just now it occured to me that the DJ debate is exactly the opposite of the performer debate. The opinion seems to be that overseas DJs are not worth the extra money. On the other hand it is worth spending lots of money for an overseas performer, and that it is the locals that are not worth the money (except Kylie).

On a different topic, I was listening to Gaywaves on 2SER last night and they did a review of the Launch. The first reviewer said she didn't like the performances. When asked what she would like to see she couldn't suggest anything, except maybe for a nun hanging off a crane. There are so many people who know what they don't like, but not what they like. Personally I thought the shows at the launch were definitely worthwhile.

The second reviewer criticised the amount of advertising for the Festival that was in the Launch. It was the launch of the Festival! I have never heard of a festival launch that doesn't promote it's own festival.
Arti - Fri 15 Feb 2002 21:44:26

Different DJ's being paid different rates for MG party is a disgrace. Every Sydney DJ who plays these events should say so too. Why dish out big dollars on over-rated and under performing overseas frauds ? Lets never forget the Barry Thunderpuss Harris joke. Sticks to the locals, they are the best DJ's in the world in my opinion. Dont we want to showcase "our" local talent to all the worlds tourists at Mardi Gras ?

Where is the justice in that ?
Two DJ's playing an identical style of American house/garage music and one filling his pockets at the expense of the other. I dont understand that. Its just plain W*R*O*N*G

After missing out on two films due to sickness, I've finally made it to the film festival. Julie Johnson may not have been the most amazing film but it was good fun. It was also fun being one of a very few poofs in a room full of dykes. Can't wait to see my next film tomorrow. Is one film everyday too much?

That special buzz on Oxford Street that only happens at Mardi Gras is here already. People coming and going from the film festival, queues to get in to restaurants, busy bars and clubs and lots of happy faces. I love this time of year!

SGLMG are to be congratulated for the brilliant, and daring event they hosted last night. Velocity, held at the Mortuary Station, was attended by our community of tomorrow - gay, straight, bent youth who were out to have a good time. And they succeeded! It is a pity that the jaded in our community could not see the good time that was had in a smoke, alcohol and drug free environment. Congrats to MG, to the guys who put the show on and to the youth who attended in the true spirit of good fun and community.

Can somebody tell me how come we have this bizarre situation every year for at least the last 6-7 years where Mardi Gras is held on the night before the Clean Up Australia day ! It all seems rather odd to me. Is somebody trying to tell us something ???
Clean us up - Sat 16 Feb 2002 22:36:23
I'm with Medic to a certain degree on Velocity, SGLMG have done a pretty good job with Velocity. It's interesting to read the news of the event/party and the ideals of the teenage youth involved. I expect their ideals will change as they become more exposed to the exotic lifestyles we 'of age' seem to enjoy. But non the less delightfull to see that a great time can be had with out booze and/or chemical assistance... I should be so lucky...! I was very disappointed however to see SGLMG's position on "NO SEX" at this event, even worse their more specific "NO MALE/MALE SEX" ...of course because it's illegal for a male under 18 to engage in sex in NSW (which ever way sex is defined) Quite pathetic was SGLMG's concession to allow kissing and hugging between males though. The AoC for females is 16 in NSW so Female/Female sex was not specifically prohibited. My real disappointment stems from the fact that MardiGras' roots (oh yes... go for the pun) came about from a group of frustrated fags challenging the draconian M/M sex laws of the 70s where it was illegal for any man of any age to have sex with another man. ...and illegal to assemble or flaunt your sexuality in bars and public places, not even kissing allowed. Female to Female sex was not categorised back then, that why it used to be just the "Gay Mardi Gras" up until the 90s. I hope the velocity boys n girls have an appreciation of this. We all have to accept that the AoC for males at 18 is atrocious if not draconian. I would have liked to see SGLMG have the balls to challenge this at Velocity, not so much by encouraging MM sex but certainly not specifically prohibiting male/male sex as they did in the write up for the party, with a whimpy "Kissing and Hugging OK" addendum. Have SGLMG really become so politicised that they have to 'sell out' rather than fight on such issues...?
Xane - Sun 17 Feb 2002 00:32:41
it seems that many posters have opinions
this is the opinion of the poster - Sun 17 Feb 2002 00:12:05
It's sad to see Mardi gras spending our dollars on overseas talent, able as the talent may be. MG should be supporting local DJ's and local performers at all times. I thought MG had a policy of fostering and supporting local Gay & Lesbian talent.
Mycle - Sun 17 Feb 2002 00:23:26
Xane - MG was putting itself out on a limb to run Velocity. I think that they were perfectly reasonable that they should insist on no sexual contact between ANYONE! be they male/male, female/female, or male/female AND also regardless of whether they are over or under 18 years of age. This was the first year that Velocity was happening and MG wants to ensure that this party will go on to become a regular festival event. That won't happen if there are protestors outside the party claiming that MG is recruiting young people into a corrupt lifestyle. Thankfully none of that happened (yet - it's only been 2 days) There is no point in jepordizing such an important event for the sake of "sticking it up them like the first MG". MG made the right decision and they should be applauded for all the hard work, committment and risk they took with that event.
- Sun 17 Feb 2002 06:05:21
Xane - also, it wasn't called the "gay mardi gras" because it was just about men. In the 70s gay was used in the same way we use the word queer. Gay back then include homosexual men and women, bisexual men and women and transgendered people. Me thinks you need to have listened more in history class when this was being discussed (or at least followed the debate that happened on Pinkboard over the bisexual EGM disgrace)
WD - Sun 17 Feb 2002 06:09:43
Xane, given the hiding that the gay male community has endured over the years about paedophilia (and yes I know its been disproven blah blah blah) and given current legal touchiness and techiness around such areas I thinnk MG's move was, in all probability, designed with theirs and others legal safety mind. I can just see it now: Velocity in full swing, police visit, catch two males engaged in the bonk, one of age, one not; the newspapers would have made mincemeat (no pun on mince either!) of us and had SGLMG on toast for breakfast. Not even Dr. Goebbels (sorry, I means Richard Cobden) could have saved the organisation. Pussy Galore (the one & original)(pure & virginal)opi

Re Velocity, This is not the forum for debate so in general, and sincerely, I conceed to the posting above re velocity. Yes MG did put itself out on a limb running Velocity and I *do* congratulate them, ...and you make a good point about 'recruiting', there's still a lot of fear from hetrosexuals about the 'gay' lifestyle. But, WD Oh Pl...eese. You miss the point. Gay women / Lesbian sex was not a political issue in the 70s... The most militant activity as MG formed was from poofs and trannies, at that's what it was about. It (MG) has evolved as it should do and no doubt will continue to do so. The politics will cycle with what ever the flavour of the month is...!

There are too many talented local DJ's in this city that never seem to get a chance because of the overseas DJ's that get invited to play here. They take all the money (which isnt deserved in my opinion) and leave us all a feeling of being ripped off. I agree that Mardi Gras should get behind the locals. There was an earlier comment like "Mardi Gras party being Sydneys celebration of all things G&L. Why bring in out of towners ? Shouldnt Mardi Gras be a showcasing of what we Sydney people can do" ? I COULDNT AGREE MORE !!!
Just a closing thought, How many overseas acts and performers played a big part in the Sydney olympics? Not many at all. It was a show casing of Australia , Mardi Gras should take the same approach.

Xane: Please don't rewrite history the way they seem to be doing in New York over Stonewall. There was a lot more to 'gay liberation' than legal sex between men. Just try telling the lesbians who were part of the first Mardi Gras march that only poofs and trannies were there I'm not actually sure there were trannies at all but that doesn't mean there weren't). GT - Sun 17 Feb 2002 21:24:41 - Its not so much the fact that the OS DJ's are playing its the money that they are taking home with them compared to what the locals are paid. Money that could be better invested in local DJ's and other more worthy causes than Overseas bank accounts

Rogue - Mon 18 Feb 2002 01:24:02
All the talk about how much OS DJ's are paid is unconfirmed and we will never know the truth as an individuals earning are their own business. Mardi Gras would get themselves in big trouble if the actually revealed how much they pay the internationals. I think that they choose to have the big names to make the party more international and give it greater credibility. Even though I may be defending the costs involved, I would still prefer one of our locals any day!
GT - Mon 18 Feb 2002 01:29:02
No, GT, a film a day isn't too much. It's good to hear that you enjoyed "Julie Johnson" because quite frankly I've seen a whole load of s**t. "All over the guy" was hilarious, if a bit obvious and predictable, but as to everything else, well.....As to the opening night film, perhaps queer screen should think outside the square and instead of showing some piece of garbage that will fill the cinema because it has porn stars and nudity (if nothing else going for it)show something of quality that will get people excited about the rest of the festival and make them want to see more.
- Mon 18 Feb 2002 03:35:27
I put the question on the first Mardi Gras graffiti wall of "what is a Men's Bar' and answered it by saying a "Men's space without balls". The way in which the fight to have a men's space (which was meant to be like the women's space only different) was won and then lost because the politically correct, commercially oriented and overly coalitionist Mardi Gras board couldn't hack it, (or rather hacked the balls off it). Coalitionism is to be challenged when it becomes a straitjacket and not a liberation. The point about what unites gays and lesbians is that we are each into to our own sex not the other one. (I know it seems too obvious to state but the way some people carry on you'd think the purpose of mardi gras was for gays and lesbians to love each other! Respect yes! Love? Not in so many words!). To me the parties lost their edge once it was decided to reduce gay male involvement. The notion that lesbians were just desparate to reach 50/50 parity with gay men at the party was always nonsense. (Frankly sex at the parties is really only a symbol, it is not the essence of it, but it has become rightly the rallying call for what a lot of gay men want in the party --even if they don't want actually to have sex). Cutting off the balls has also made it easier to Disney-ize Mardi Gras. And cutting off its roots in the tribal side of our community has led to this other perversion: reliance on overseas DJ's and so-called star acts. The best shows at Mardi Gras have always been the 100% Australian. I begin to sound like Dick Smith, and on that dick note I will leave you. Maintain the rage! Be homosexual at Mardi Gras!
Funboy - Mon 18 Feb 2002 09:23:18
Anyone who thinks Mardi Gras is dead or dying would surely have to rethink this after Fair Day yesterday. Surely this was one of the best crowds seen at the Fair, certainly it looked at least double the crowd from last year. Perhaps the only Mardi Gras event which is dying is the over priced rip off of a party. Only been to one party which cost about $100 to get inside, then be forced to buy small bottles of water for $5 and basic food for even more. If the MG committie didn't rip us gays off so blatently at the party, it would still be popular and still sell out weeks in advance...unlike last year and this year it seems.

Thanks everyone re overseas DJ's costs, glad I'm not the only. I had heard about Frankie Knuckles figure was was disgusted as have friends who are DJ's and your all right - we should be showcasing Australia's DJ Talent. As for overseas guests, well yes we should showcase local talent, but if an overseas artist is in town, then we should grab them, not pay all the $'s to bring them specifically out here just for MG. Surely a record company would help with costs to bring over an act and help promote the act ? instead of MG footing the whole bill. Xane - your post was wrong but glad you conceded to other peoples opinions ( which is a rarity on this board ). Funboy, don't blame Mardi Gras for "cutting the balls off". The organization responds to the wants/needs of it's members. One only has to read the postings here to see a "don't rock the boat" streak of conservatism running through our community. The comments concerning no sex at Velocity make that very clear. I hope the young men at that event broke the law and defied Mardi Gras' gutless directive. Once again "Happy Mardi Gras" indeed.

Dear "MascLeatherGuy". Me - I'm laughing about the overseas/local debate on this wall. "Mardi Gras being a showcasing of Sydneysiders"? Hmmm - if that's the case then Mardi Gras should ban all overstate / interstate visitors - perhaps a requirement to show proof of address in Sydney to get into the party. As for polishing my chaps? Having been on these boards for a couple of years we I have seen the local vs overseas talent argument go round and around in circles. This is a world class event and as such should have international content in both the shows and the DJ lineup. There are lots of people who never get to travel to the US or to Europe to catch big name acts. But being an international event we should also be showcasing our own talent. Being a local and asked to play MG should be seen as an honour and reward for working hard and playing all those long nights in dingy nightclubs up and down oxford st and not specifically be about the money. If an international costs $X and MG can afford that then thats what it costs. Imports be they cars or champagne always cost more, fact of life. Sounds like MG has done the right thing and shared the cost with a few other people. I think the mix between locals and internationals is pretty good at the moment.

I think MG should charge a nominal entry fee of say $2.00 for Fair Day. Anything to help stop the reliance on those 2 parties. Any further updates on ticket sales?

In other matters went to GAS and saw Ian Pooley on Friday night, he was really good not at all what I would have expected. Saturday I went to Reserection and had a f*#king great time (pun intended). Venue was ok even though it diddn't have the same grungy atmosphere as last year. Both Alex and Jojo had good sets perhaps too good cause people were dancing and not in the backroom. LOL. Then went and sat on the top of the hill at Fair Day and had a great afternoon with friends and stirring up trouble. Got lots planned for this week including the Armistead Maupin book signing at the Shift on Friday and Harbour Party on Sunday. Somewhere in all that I gota find time to get some sleep and go to work.

My boyfriend, close friends and I pay Mardi Gras about $1000 a year in party tickets and so on and I would like to know if Mardi Gras poll their members for opinions? A mail out, tick-box type poll asking what members actually wanted at parties and more generally. Would this not solve the issues about DJs Acts and Men's spaces? At least we would have a majority rules situation. I know there is an AGM but most people find that sort of environment intimidating. They could even run polls on their web site where you used your membership number and a PIN to vote?
- Mon 18 Feb 2002 21:18:16
Yes Fair Day was a massive success. But the funding to run the event comes from party ticket sales. As does funding for the Parade/Festival & events such as Velocity. When you buy your party ticket, you are paying for more than the party. If our community wants to have another fantastic Fair Day, throw a great party for under age queers, then I suggest that we support the Main Party. See you all in the Hordern.

Mardi Gras did a phone survey after the 1998 Party - it was quite comprehensive. I got surveyed and got asked what I thought about the number of people at the party, the DJs, the lights, the performances, the ticketing fiasco. There seemed to be quite a few changes after this - ticketing policy was fixed, length of DJ shifts was changed (that was the year there was only 2 in the RHI) etc. I agree that this is a good process and should be formed continually - in a spirit of continuous improvement. However, how do you get an informed debate about something like overseas DJs? The arguments on this board are starting to run like commentary on asylum seekers - for my two cents worth, I think a mix of DJs is fine. There are much better things to worry about - like will I fit into my latex shorts? And just why should I care that Deborah Cox goes to wooork in her miniskiiirt? So does my secretary, but she doesn't sing about it

Xane (et al) thanks for your comments re Velocity (sorry I've taken time to get reply - I haven't logged on to this site since my last posting). I agree entirely with you regarding AoC issues - however the point I was trying to make was that the atmosphere at the party on Friday night was one of inclusion - whether gay, straight or bent. I sometimes feel sad that our parties have to be so physically sexual, or need overt sex to make them work for some of us. Certainly at a youth function, societal norms suggest that sex in public is a bit left of centre. Before you start shouting, 1978 was about being way left of centre - for the day. That's okay. At least now, the organisation (that I don't always agree with) ran a party that was "brave" for this day, where there was acceptance regardless of identity without the need for over the top physical contact. Let me explain briefly - there was a break dancing panel in one place, next to a cushion covered "podium". A group of us stood watching a group of kids dancing/breakdancing with one another (and they were having a brilliant time!). On the adjacent cushions were two guys "exploring" each other (in a totally appropriate way - showing affection, not showing off). I think this is a triumph for our community and for those young people. As I said previously, good "clean" fun in a good "clean" environment. Here's hoping for many more parties like this!

I wonder how many of these people who are demanding that Mardi Gras do things that are currently against the law actually do any campaigning against these laws. It is illegal to provide a sex space at a licenced event. There is also the age of consent. If SGLMG breaks these laws then it risks what it has built over the years. Are these people members of the Gay & Lesbian Rights Lobby? Have written to politicians about these laws? Do they attend the demonstrations and marches to demand changes to these laws? Or do they just like to whinge?

In reply to my letter "Shane - Fri 15 Feb 2002 16:20:50"
Dear Shane,
I can assure you the entire DJ budget for party doesn't amount to as much as some of the rumours about Frankie's fees, so please rest assured that it is simply rumour.
I can't release details of DJ payments, and nor would I, since it is people's private information about their incomes. Of course it costs more to bring in internationals, because we have to pay for airfares, but our Qantas sponsorship means that this is not real money, it is part of our sponsorship agreement. Even better, in this case we are sharing the costs with Harbour Party, so Mardi Gras is not footing the whole bill.
Our patrons like to have a couple of big names from overseas, and as with Frankie last year our local DJs, and especially the newer ones, love having people they can listen to and learn from.
But Mardi Gras' main focus is and has always been on developing and promoting local DJs and performers, and many DJs have acknowledged the role played by Mardi Gras in supporting their careers. That is incredibly important both in the selection of DJs for the party and their placement in the different halls and line-up, and also in selecting DJs and tracks for the CD and other parties across the season.
Best wishes,
Kelly Gardiner
CEO, SGLMG

MY REPLY –
Dear Kelly ,
Thank you for your swift reply on this issue , but I am afraid you have failed to answer the main question and I feel you have missed my point entirely.
My main point was that DJ’s are being paid different amounts for doing exactly the same job.
The locals DJ’s in recent years have been a FAR greater success than any of the the Overseas DJ’s (possibly Wayne G excluded). Victor Calderone and Barry Thunderpuss Harris were two examples of higher paid DJ’s who when it came to their "on the night performance" were highly disappointing to the majority of people. In fact Harris was a disaster !!
For decades we as the G&L community have strived for equal rights yet when it comes to the issue of DJ’s you treat the overseas under performers differently to the local boys and girls. Theres no equality !
Sydney Mardi Gras run events should be a show case of what we the people of Sydney can do. When the Sydney olympics were on you didn’t see the AOC bringing in big names from overseas to prop up the olympic ceremony – No , it was all locals. Showing the world what Australia could do !
I don’t overly object to overseas DJ’s , I do object to their pay being higher than local talent.
I know a few local DJ’s. Some have done Mardi Gras parties , some havent. ALL feel like they are being treated second rate behind overseas DJ’s that on the night have time and time again not come up with the goods.
Any overseas DJ wanting to play at a SGLMG event should agree to play under the same hourly rate as any local, if they dont agree to that then invite somebody who will. Same pay for the same job !
I'd dearly love to offer my opinion on a MG sub-committee like party committee but trying to volunteer for these sorts of committees is an uphill battle and it seems like these committees are always a closed shop.
Regards
Shane

Ah yes... Fair Day, It was rooley good. I saw the Cops get pulled down in a tug-o-war, now that's always fun. We're so lucky in Sydney, most other places the Cops still want to chuck you in jail for kissing boys. Was hot though but good to get the shirt off and tan up a little in preparation for the big night. A few beers and catch up with all yer poof buddies, some who you saw last night and some who you saw at the last Fair Day. A lot more families and kids there this year... all good education for them little tikes. But I did embarass myself though by asking a Cop in the Cop recruiting stall how much the shirts were. Hahahahaah. I really wanted the red one... it was then I realised the rainbow connection. Doh!

Anyone going to the Wet Dreaming recovery party at Byron Bay the weekend after the Mardi Gras party
Brin - Wed 20 Feb 2002 02:04:20
Arti - calm down. What law states that a licensed premises cannot allow boys to kiss boys or girls to kiss girls? The answer is none. You are inventing a problem. I believe that MG restricts tickets to persons 18+ years. What is it about this debate that distresses you so much? I would like to know.
PaulDiamondo - Wed 20 Feb 2002 02:22:32
I'm with Arti. Paul D - I think Arti is referring to the under 18's party and other posters knocking MG for not pushing gay causes like they would at an over 18's event. As another poster pointed out, the newspapers would have a field day. These boys and girls are all still growing up and coming to terms with their lives, they dont need everyones cause shoved in the face at a party. And yes I would also like to know how many of the whingers actually go out and support the cause they are supporting/knocking on this wall. Lastly, ages ago someone posted that it is against the law to have sex on premises space at a licensed venue - can anyone confirm or deny this ? any lawyers on this wall ?

Hullo. I thought I ought to reply to a couple of questions raised here, hope you don't mind: yes, it is illegal for "indecent behaviour" to occur on licensed premises, and any "indecent behaviour" can threaten the future license of a venue. For Velocity, it wasn't a licensing issue - one of our big concerns was that young people and their parents would feel assured that the party was safe in every way, because there were people as young as 13 there. The guidelines for Velocity were formed by a group of young people, and another committee of youth workers, and we take their guidance and advice, and thank them all for their input. It was an amazing and important event, and many of us oldies shed a tear. One of the most amazing things about the night was seeing mums dropping off their 13 year-old kids, and telling them to have fun - one mum drove her boy all the way from Canberra, and it's not something I can imagine happening when I was that age, no matter how cool the folks might have been. Most importantly, it went off!
Kelly - Sydney Gay+Lesbian Mardi Gras. - Wed 20 Feb 2002 12:05:28
that's really nice Kelly, but where is the voice of Mardi Gras in the debates concerning equal age of consent for Gay men, on superannuation rights and partnership equality, It'll be "Happy Mardi Gras" for me when our biggest gay and lesbian rights group starts speaking out loudly, and I mean shouting, on these issues. If I hear about one more "oldie" shedding a tear! I accept the very sound idea behind Velocity, and the behaviorial restrictions, but this needs to be accompanied by a level of political activism that Mardi Gras seems incapable of at this time. 600,000 people may watch the parade, what will the Mardi Gras sponsered floats be saying to them this year?
Mycle - Wed 20 Feb 2002 13:42:33
So what do we all feel about the music from the Mardi Gras Party being broadcast live on Triple J From 10pm till 6am on the night of the party? I'm gunna record it to VCR on longplay so I can see if it was really as good as I remember it. But having said that I think I would really prefer that the "secrecy" that surrounds our party is kept intact. Playing the party on mainstream radio I think has the potential to change the current mix of party patrons at future parties (which I think is pretty good at the moment). I hope the decision is not some kind of advertising ploy to ensure that next years party sells out 'no matter what the cost'
BND putting a new topic on the table - Wed 20 Feb 2002 13:51:21
On other (slightly off topic) matters I would love to catch up with some of the other Pinkboard regulars but don't know how easy that is going to be. After many years of storing up hints and clues I finally worked out who Countdown boy is and no he's not Molly Meldrums love child LOL. Over the years there are lots of names that have come and gone, Technowarrior (TW) Mark and I'm Straight (wonder if he still is *grin*) and many many others (I wish the old boards were still there so I could jog my memory, perhaps Panther can make up a list of the regular contributors). Yesterday at work I was told I am being transfered to New Zealand Friday week, fortunatly I mananged to get a weeks extention. If you see me at the party say Hi, there is a pic of me at www.gaydar.com.au/boynxdor
BND going Baa Baa - Wed 20 Feb 2002 14:13:13
Supporter, yes it is against the law for licensed premises to provide a dedicated SOPV on site.
Mycle - Wed 20 Feb 2002 16:04:40
what type of job transfers you to NZ with 10 days notice !
- Wed 20 Feb 2002 16:16:37
I wonder which pavilions they'll be broadcasting from. I think it's an okay idea. There are lots of people who can't go to Mardi gras or to the party for one reason or another. They can have a bit of the party at home. I don't think that playing the music on JJJ will change the mix at the parties any - it's not like they're one of the huge commercial FM stations. On the other hand some of the music may actually put people off going ... :-P
EC - Wed 20 Feb 2002 16:20:21
I'm still recovering from the delights of F*ck Fashion. If you think Mardi Gras has lost its focus you have to go to this FF next year. Sexy boys and grrls - even bisexual action - Mardi Gras lifted her skirts and discovered something fun, real, surreal and a little unreal last saturday night. On of the best parties in Sydney in a while - Chip was great. I hope some of the sexy vibe this event had and the great shows rubs off on the big party. Drag is fine just not all the time.
F*cker - Wed 20 Feb 2002 17:34:36
Re Mardi Gras Sponsored floats, I have heard that the parade committee, mardi gras workshop staff and lead float participants have had to sign a secracy clause because for the first time in years the float is said to be extremely political. It will be interesting to see if it is as political as some of the participants are claiming and what message it will convey. Does anyone have any further info on this?
- Wed 20 Feb 2002 18:25:07
Dear BND , Im rather upset to hear you have been "deported' to New Zealand for work. Given that I really want to catch up with you at the party to say my goodbyes (as long as the goodbyes arent in the Dome toilets LOL) ! Hope to see you there , and I just very well could be Molly Meldrums love child .... oh no I'm not , i just got that image in my head and it AINT pretty !
countdownboy - Wed 20 Feb 2002 19:58:20
Perhaps the lead float will be about the Governor General ... or maybe the Tampa ...
- Wed 20 Feb 2002 20:54:33
BND - you sure are cute. I was sorry to read that you're cut. What made your parents do it? I hadn't assumed that JJJ would broadcast direct from the halls. Isn't it more likely that they'll have a booth somewhere outside and do the usual shopping centre-type cast? They might even interview me! In fact, I'll make certain they do! Attendances will plummet. Sorry MG.

I concur with Mycle's criticism of mardi gras' handling of political matters. Why is it that when the media gave Pell & Hollingsworth such a platform to criticise Mardi Gras, they couldn't e-mail all the members fast enough to suggest that we write letters to the editor and ring talkback radio to discuss the issue (???) but they couldn't do the same when submissions were invited for the Superannuation Entitlements of Same Sex Couples bill with very little fanfare and very little notice?

otto - Thu 21 Feb 2002 04:00:59
Yep, agree with what Mycle had to say as well. Mardi Gras need to get back into being a political voice and pushing for reforms to benefit our community. Maybe they need to visit Melbourne and see what can be achieved by uniting and working together with the GLBT community. Come on guys, we now have a fulltime GLBT radio station down here :-) Guess that went a bit off topic, but come on MG, get political - the struggle is not over for equality.

Good to hear from you BND. I'm still around and visit the wall regularly to check on the talk, gossip and party predictions, but unfortunaltely have been pressed for time to comment (until now). For a few parties, several yrs ago, I tried to meet up wqith a regular from Brisvegas, but we missed each other due to hall reconfigurations, trashyness causing lack of time awareness, shows etc. I would love to try again (at this stage it looks like I will be there) and meet up with a few people I have spoken to via the wall. Don't know if we could drag technowarrior or EC out of the dome, but I always tried to meet at somethimg like "the third pillar from the back, RHS in the RHI" between certain times. (EG)12 - 12:30am). Mind you, that hasn't had great success in the past! We also gave a description of what we would be wearing (even one item) to be recognised. How does something along these lines sound? I'm still straight (in my kind of way) since I last checked and look forward to a big dance with some old and new friends. By the way, another name for the record is Nat.

Hello All - To anyone who tried out for to be a performer at the Party, have you heard back if you made it or not?

Hi Mark good to see ya still around and on your way for a boogie, and Nat was the other name that was the other name I was trying to think of yesterday. I agree about it being hard to run into people. With friends I stopped doing the "meet you between the Horden/RHI every two hours blah blah blah" years ago cause we never met up and always missed out on other stuff. These days we just catch up if and when we run into each other. Having said that I always seem to run into a guy from work in the backroom ***every single time*** even tho we each swear "I just popped in to see what was in here". And to answer your question PaulDiamondo, dangerous territory ever trying to work out what ones parents were thinking in the early 70's. LOL

The GLRL, while doing a great job fighting for our rights, can't hope to give profile to issues of equality in or community that an organization with the media power and support base of SGLMG . Clever politcal satire in the parade is at it's lowest point ever, making people laugh at the same time as making them think is a powerful weapon. A noted community activist once described the parade as the "merging of art and politics" I hope it can be that again one day.
Mycle - Thu 21 Feb 2002 14:24:06
Hey Mark. I think it would actually be the Hordern you would be dragging Technowarrior out of this year, and Nat as well. Me, I like to get around. The party for me is a journey to share with my friends. But I have to say, that third pillar from the back in the RHI seems to wander around a bit and get lost as the night goes on .... now I want to know why there's been no screams about Bardot and Human Nature. What is this, Video Hits? :-P

On the subject of backrooms.......before we start complaining about no backroom at the party just remember that there was a very well setup one at Sleeze. I think perhaps Mardi Gras has realised that its a matter that just wont go away so they will deal with it in the most discrete way possible. And as for "am I a backroom boy", well lets just say I have been known to loose whole hours in there, which I try not to do these days cause thats not the point of going to the party. But yeah I have been in there and to oh several dozen of the orgys that are held after the party. So many hot men so little time................

Tickets are only $55 plus booking fee and are available from Fish Records in Newtown or call Fishtix on 1800 670 548. There is a bar and delicious finger food available and commentary of the parade by Outfm regulars. Tix are limited so grab some friends and watch the parade in comfort. I heard so many positive comments after the film so everyone must have enjoyed it. Then I went to Urbania. This was an opposite to Km0. It was a bit scary and very dark. It was a story about a gay man coming to terms with a trajic event. I had a great night of cinema. More to come this weekend.

As the manager of one of the largest SOPV's here in Sydney, one that is council approved and legal. A word of advice to the Board of the SGLMG - thinking of providing a space set up for sex at the party? DON'T!!!! you are not set up for it, with a HEP A outbreak occuring at the moment it would be irresponsible and grossly negligent. Even if it was set up in conjunction with the NSW Heath Dept guidelines for SOPV's (which you don't have the time, resources or $$$$ for) it is still illegal on a licensed premise. An SOPV is not simply a dark area! Perhaps ACON should be looking at this operation more closely, as should the NSW Healh Dept?
Venue Manager - Fri 22 Feb 2002 12:37:02
As both a SOPV owner/operator and gay man I concur with the above comment!! A dark area with no facilities does not a backroom make - especially in light of the current Hep A out-break and still fairly high back-ground levels of gonorrhea as well as the likelyhood of the syphillis outbreak comming over from Europe for M'Gras.............. Same goes for guys putting on those "famous" private sex-parties (AT LEAST BUY YOUR OWN FRIGGING CONDOMS - YOU MAKE ABOUT 8000.00 FOR THE NIGHT - SO DON'T RIP OF VENUES). Unless you can provide facilities that come up to NSW Health Dep. Guidelines (Infectious Control Procedures for SOPV etc)and ACON's guidelines - JUST DON'T. In the end it boils down to : consumer beware No point bitching after you picked up a "little something"........
- Fri 22 Feb 2002 16:00:54
BND - You must pass the baton. The description of your exploits in the 24hrs after the big parties has always been one of the highlights on this board. NB - I had always assumpted that "BND" had something to do with bondage. But that's just me. NB2 - In terms of JJJ broadcasting live from the party, I can't imagine them broadcasting from the RHI. Deborah Cox on JJJ, only if she straps on a guitar.
lovin' it - Fri 22 Feb 2002 15:01:39
has anyone else noticed that lovin' it seems to be a Deborah Cox fan in denial? hehe..
kxr - Fri 22 Feb 2002 15:22:15
Actually, it may seem strange, but JJJ is featuring tracks from the Mardi Gras CD, including Jake's very anthemic hands-in-the-air RHI set. I don't think they'll be broadcasting the shows somehow. BND I would have paid much closer attention to those post-party exploits if I'd only known who you were ;-)
EC - Fri 22 Feb 2002 19:57:58
I'm not going to single handedly take on all the SOPV in Sydney cause its not the purpose of this board (and I beg Panthers indulgence for this reply :) but I would like to make a few points: 1. Any sexually active man or woman (be they gay or not) that chooses to have sex in a backroom, bedroom, nightclub toilet, beach, park or for that matter SOPV is responsible for their actions and thus is equally likely to be exposed to an STD. SOPV have no control whatsoever what diseases their patrons bring with them or control over how they are spread. Since when were SOPV "set up to deal with a Hep A outbreak"? You are exactly right "consumer beware"! 2. If you are going to indulge in these kind of activities, go to a doctor and get yourself a HepA and a HepB vacination, easy solution to avoiding HepA. (and yes I know there are lots of other things you can get) 3. Most all of the people who enter a backroom or join in any form of group sexual activity would also be a patron who frequents SOPVs, be careful with the lablels you attatch, these people are your customer base. 4. "Same goes for guys putting on those "famous" private sex-parties (AT LEAST BUY YOUR OWN FRIGGING CONDOMS - YOU MAKE ABOUT 8000.00 FOR THE NIGHT - SO DON'T RIP OF VENUES)." What tha????????????????????????? The private parties are safe sex only and they buy and supply the condoms, they dont have secret squads that run around stealing them from venues. For that matter condoms are supplied free at just about every pub and club in Sydney anyway. "You make about 8000.00" What dollars? I don't think so. Big secret, they make nothing. And I choose to believe that the "so don't rip off the venues" comment is probably supposed to mean "we don't want to share the market with anyone else" which is a bit rich because almost all the SOPV's are at capacity before and after the party. 5 "Perhaps ACON should be looking at this operation more closely" ummmm I think they know exactly whats happening. As I seem to recall its them who ****hands**** you the condom as you walk into the party, if anything this could be seen as them promoting sex at the party. 6. You are entirely correct, it is illegal to sell alcohol and supply sexual services in the same venue, this is why drinks at brothels are complimentary. And SOPV are not supposed to allow access to people who are intoxicated yet I have seen people, on different occasions, turn up to different (prominant) SOPV, and be barely able to get their money out of their wallet yet be given entry. A backroom at a party may well be illegal but it is really a victimless crime. And finally 7. See now the plot thickens!!! I know who Countdown Boy is and it seems EC knows who I am (but I got noooooo idea who he is though he knows me via me living in Perth). Hi lovin'it, I was a "Queen Scout" and a rockclimbing instructor so I am very good with my knots, I also have an instinct for knowing just how far to push the limits *grin*. As far as Triple J broadcasting from the RHI, from the ad it sounds like they are broadcasting all the main DJ's and that includes those in the RHI. Call it stereo-typical but I think JJJ probably feel the kind of music played in the RHI is the kind of music that most fags like. And now u have given me visions of Deborah Cox on stage with a strap on ewhhhh LOL

What the #^%$…! Mr Manager of a SOPV says...“A word of advice to the Board of the SGLMG - thinking of providing a space set up for sex at the party? DON'T!!!! you are not set up for it” Get real Mr (Mum) Manager. I would expect any educated gay person who has (the infamous) multiple sexual partners to have had their Hep A and Hep B shots, but if they haven’t, hey…! That’s their business. It’s hardly Mardi Gras’ concern, lookout or responsibility. This is a party for a bunch of poofs and dykes for god’s sake… It’s our party for god’s sake, we are Mardi Gras. We don’t want the Mardi Gras board censoring or controlling the activities of the members… except bad behaviour or violence which we expect them to do. No matter what the 'goody two shoes' would like to believe… there will be sex at the party and lots of it. I think the backroom was a great idea and I hope they do it again. Keeps the toilet cubicles free, adds an element of mystery and excitement, gives the straight boys (yeah right…!) a chance to jump the fence once or twice on the night (girls too I guess) and if it’s in the Horden again, you can keep dancing while getting it on…!. Mardi Gras provide the condoms, and good for them. I really don’t think people rip them off Mr Mum, I mean who wants to dance all night with pockets full of condoms… and if they did… so what…? They’ll end up on a dick somewhere doing their job preventing the spread of HIV… and I guess Hep A & B to some extent.
Xane - Hep A & Hep B vaccinated and willing to share my immunity. - Sat 23 Feb 2002 12:22:46
Seven nights to go, Countdown Boy tells us… Brings to mind the Seven Deadly Sins. More like the seven wonderful sins… and now, the Seven days of Mardi Gras I think… Pride – Oh yea…! We’re all proud to be gay. Greed – I want it ALL and I want it NOW. Envy – I hate that Queen. Wrath – Drunks at Mardi Gras are so Cleveland. Lust – It’s raining men, hallelujah, It’s raining men. Gluttony – I wonder what else I can put in my mouth tonight. Sloth – Oh God, it’s morning. One Sin for each remaining night then DO ‘EM ALL on party night… Yee Haa. Remember 7 is a lucky number.
Lucky 7 Xane - Sat 23 Feb 2002 12:25:44
Thank you BND for putting what I was feeling into words. When I read the SOPV postings it made me feel so mad that they could feel so superior to others who make their own choices in life. I don't indulge in sex at parties as it's just not my thing but I strongly agree with the need for backrooms so that those people who like to indulge have somewhere to go and have access to condom and lube. People will have sex at the party no matter what Mardi Gras does so it's better that there is a safe place for it to happen rather than in all the little spaces arround the party that could be dangerous!

f*ck fashion was just a great time. didnt know exactly what to expect but found it sexy, tolerant of all, no attitude, and a cool, if narrow venue. that buff man in chaps just enjoying dancing in the rain - did it for me - a great memory. congrats to organisers and to participants for getting into the groove and making it go off.

Guys read the SSCC regulations for SOPV's, read the NSW Health Dept Guidelines for SOPV's, WAKE UP! Nobody is telling you not to have sex, nobody is telling you that you're not responsible for your own actions. ACON, NSW Health, SSCC guidelines are about harm minimisation, they are about giving you the facilities & choices to manage and protect your health! The reputable SOPV's in Sydney have been fighting a long and hard battle in conjuction with professional health consultants to provide our patrons with superior facilities. The new ACON code of practice for SOPV's is currently being finalised, at the very least Mardi Gras, an organisation which long ago signed on to the policy of harm minimisation, should comply with this if it's going to provide a Sex Space. So before you all jump to defend your rights, that is exactly what this is about. Your right to a safe, clean, well maintained Sex Space, where harm minimisation is the goal.
Venue Manager - Sun 24 Feb 2002 02:40:12

countdownboy - Sun 24 Feb 2002 09:26:44
Mr Venue Manager, please give us an idea of what it is exactly that you do differently to a back room at a party. My only experience of SOPV's is a dark space with the only visible harm minimisation being condoms. Does harm minimisation mean posters on the wall warning of the risks? How can you read them in the dark? As I've said before I don't do sex at parties and have little experience of venues, but I'd like to know why the same kind of strategies you talk about are any different from a venue to a dance party.
GT - Sun 24 Feb 2002 10:58:11
I have to jump in here with a very brief comment. Compare the SOPVs in Sydney to those in Melbourne in terms of cleanliness, harm minimisation and choices(and quality). Sydney operators should be ashamed of them selves. What MG provided at Sleaze was no worse than any other venue in Sydney. Lets end this topic. On a much brighter note... This week is set to be FABULOUS...!

GT, there is not the space in this forum for the information you want. You can get copies of the NSW Health Guidelines free from ACON, and the SSCC Regulations free from council. I'm afraid in my over zealous attempt to ensure that SGLMG provides you all with the quality of service you deserve, I appear to have picked the scab off a running sore, so to speak. Zane, if I could swear about your comments in this forum, I would! Suffice to say complete and utter rubbish! I don't know which clubs you use in Sydney (if any) but perhaps a little exploration is in order. I hope you all have a happy & safe Mardi Gras, and remember safe sex always.

Harbour Party Sunday was brilliant. The fireworks at the end of the night capped it ALL off. Saw lots of friends and the music was great, it even had words!!!! I was the one who filled the bus on the way to GAS with bubbles. At GAS I had a wiggle on the front of the stage with a very cute boy. My group spent most of the night upstairs with Alex and he played a great set. Even got a souvenier of the night.
BND - Mon 25 Feb 2002 07:53:58
BARDOT and HUMAN NATURE are playing in Canberra on the Saturday night of Mardi Gras (one good reason to leave this town I suppose). So they can't be performing at the party, that is unless they do that Elton John thing and hop on a Concorde and get to Sydney before the party is over.
Sweet Cowboy - Mon 25 Feb 2002 08:45:06
If the rumours are true then Bardot would be playing at around 3.00 or 4.00am and Human Nature would play at 10.00am. Plenty of time to jump on a plain after thier Saturday night shows and perform again on Sunday morning.

What's with the lesbian content in this year's Queer Screen shorts? I had the (dis)pleasure of sitting through "Bad Girls" yesterday and found it the worse cinema experience of my life. Not only were the movies badly made, they had absolutely no relevance to lesbians. Whoever picked them for the festival should re-evaluate what they consider "lesbian". The first short was written and directed by a hetero man who obviously thought lesbians would be into it simply because it starred big breasted women; the second short was cancelled due to sound difficulties; the third short had two "bikie" chicks, who I assume were meant to be lesbians, in an otherwise straight movie; and the final short (which didn't really get a chance given many women had walked out by this stage) was about "female gangs in NY" - but not one lesbian image in sight. The highlight of the session was when one comedian in the audience yelled "Fifty bucks to whoever spots the lesbian!". Note to Queer Screen: next year how about you 1) let a dyke pick the lesbian movies; and 2) actually watch the films before including them in the festival.
Disgruntled Cinema-goer - Mon 25 Feb 2002 13:26:27
what is with the crap in saturday herald? since when did mg do the political thing. taking on christians is a dangerous thing.
- Mon 25 Feb 2002 13:26:55
watching the SOPV debate with interest, have one thing to say. If you guys fought for our rights as passionatly as you fight for your "right" to pay $113 to screw around in a dark room at a party once a year, we would have achievied full equality 20 years ago.
Mycle - Mon 25 Feb 2002 12:39:02
To Disgruntled Cinema goer - I went to Boys on the Verge which sounded realy interesting in the festival guide but most of the shorts in it were crap. But please don't write off the whole festival. Family Dramas was a great selection of shorts with plenty of lesbian content. If you only you could go back in time and change your choice. The Australian shorts were so much better than the overseas shorts this year. Next year don't miss My Queer Career!

Hey Countdown Boy - The forecast on the Bureau of Meteorology website says fine on Saturday at the moment. The forecast will change everyday up until Friday so don't worry too much just yet. We've been lucky this year with the rain clearing for almost all of the big events in Mardi Gras so I'm sure the same will happen again on Saturday. Just plan to make everything waterproof and have a good time whatever happens. Check out www.bom.gov.au to keep up to date.

My favourite sight at HP on Sunday night was seeing the two policeman standing at the bottom of the stairs for over half an hour - helping to ensure that no one was on the stairs for the 10pm drag show.
It could only happen in Sydney - Mon 25 Feb 2002 14:05:42
GT - the documentaries have been worth it, especially Relatively Speaking. My point was really from a lesbian viewpoint - as usual, not a lot on offer. Speaking of Aussie shorts, I went to Celluloid Salon to catch the full program and they were great. The Dendy's a great venue, but what a shame Celluloid Salon couldn't be a feature at the Palace. Instead it's shown at the Dendy so that they can screen "quality" American films at the Palace.

My favourite festival event so far this year is Resident Alien. Quentin Crisp tells us about everything from love to sex to politics. It was a one man show and the actor (Bette Bourne) did a perfect Quentin Crisp. It was full of laughs and very deep advise
Arti - Mon 25 Feb 2002 20:27:14
EC's favourite DJ was Dean Essing ?? How bizarre !! I always thought EC was an anti-commercial music type ? How wrong was i ?? Dean Essing (May he RIP) was the girliest and most commercial DJ around who played at big events. Who could forget RHI Sleaze 1996 when he played a dance mix of "The Love Boat" ! Theres only been a few DJ's since those times to have the balls the play really camp handbag stuff at major parties. Sean Manley , Stephen Blomfield and Jake Kilby are the only 3 that come to mind. Long live handbag !

I thought the closing night film of queer screen - by hook or by crook - was the highlight of the whole qs festival. it was a class feature! why wasn't it the opening night film? It will surely make it in the real (arthouse) world but sydney couldn't see past its obsession with boy porn to take a chance and market this great film for the opening night. (Well done qs on a good festival otherwise.) btw, is Sydney mature enough to handle a stand-alone queer film festival without the mg festival to back it up? I think so. we think we're the premier gay city of the world, yet we cram eveything into one crazy/wonderful month.
rational - Mon 25 Feb 2002 21:29:47
Glad to hear the good review of Resident Alien by Arti, its one of the festival activities that I really want to try and get to. Yesterday on the way to Harbour Party I went to see the BF on the big screen at Dendy in the runners up section of the short films. Didn't have many lines but he plays a good fag. Another short called "Wash colours Seperately" was very very well done. It was about asian stereotyping that happens within the gay community and I admit that I fell into one of the traps that was set up. As far as favourite DJ well that would have to be whatever one is playing while i'm having fun. Most bizzare thing I ever heard was when Kate played "9 to 5" at Inquisition that year, to this day I don't know where that one was going! The DJ that has developed their style most since I have been on the scene would have to be Jojo. Don't know that I ever heard Dean Essing play and who is Stephen Blomfield I know of both Sean and Jake.
BND - Mon 25 Feb 2002 22:44:25
Yes thankyou Harbour Party. When bits of the Mardi Gras party spirit were getting trampled underfoot by "bigger is better" you took the spirit to one of the most beautiful spots on earth: Sydney Harbour on a summer's night. I think it is OK you are quitting while you are ahead. But like others I am waiting for Son of Harbour Party to be born next year or the year after. In the meantime thanks for the memories. It may not sound like it (but I was totally drug free -- including alcohol free).

The parade is live and 'uncut' in Foxtel (of course). No A>D> I am not anti any sort of music. I dance and enjoy myself in all of the halls at Mardi Gras. I suppose I don't like REALLY girly music and what I am anti is people refusing to step out of their safety zone and actually listen to other styles, instead of dubbing everything THEY don't like as crap. I loved Dean for his sense of theatre (as well as a touch or irony). I don't think any of the other DJs playing in a commercial vein have ever shown quite the same flair - at least not at a Mardi gras party. (whatever happened to Warren Gluck?)

I'm sure it was Raspberry Beret done with an Allkins twist a la S-S-Single Bed. Fluffy trance version of Over The Rainbow = Wayne G. He played it at Mardi Gras and at Ice (!) last year. Snowstorms? Ah the Government Pavilion. Now those were the days .... lol

Snowstorms, LOL, my ex boyf, god bless his little cotton sox, is 12 years my junior and after hearing my friends and I discuss parties past, religiously E Mail's SGLMG every year begging to see a Snowstorm, maybe we could all help him realise his dream?
Mycle - Tue 26 Feb 2002 17:32:15
The 1993 Mardi Gras stow storm in the RHI was a classic. I clearly remember it. It was 7am and I was dancing pretty much centre dancefloor about half way between the stage and back of the RHI . It was quite hot that night and it was really quite uncomfortable in the hall. I was with a friend from Melbourne who was at his very first MG party and it was the 1st time he had ever taken pills so I was nursing him through the night you could say.
“Disco Inferno” came on , I think it was Rob Davis playing at the time (Craig Truslove had been on first followed by Dean Essing in the middle set).
As the song came on I felt a really cool breeze on my back (I was facing the stage at the time) , I said to my freiend at the time something like “Wow , can you feel that cool breeze , I wonder where that’s coming from” ? Simultaneously we turned around to face the opposite end of the RHI to hopefully get the breeze on our faces and at the exact moment we both turned around we were hit splat in the face by 50 tonnes of paper confetti (ie the snowstorm). We (along with everyone else in the RHI) spent the last 3 hours of the party picking confetti off each other !
It took months to get myself free of stray bits of confetti , sure it was fun at the time , and it was a great memory from that party but I don’t think the queens of today would appreciate it as much as we did in ’93. Todays queens are so into looking immaculate at all times that to be sprayed with confetti when they are all hot and sweaty would simply put them into a big girly tizz LOL !
countdownboy - Tue 26 Feb 2002 18:14:54
gotta agree with mr panties regarding the music at harbour party sunday. it was the most soul-less and effeminate stuff I've ever heard. rob davis wasnt too bad, a little predictable, but nothing like the 'music' that wayne g played. the music at harbour party has always been funky & summery. why did they ruin that great formula by letting wayne g play such rubbish ? that kind of music belongs in the cold, dank drag clubs in Manchester, not by the harour in sydney. not a good way to end a series of parties. but this is just MY opinon
Ashley - Tue 26 Feb 2002 21:46:29
Re the Sunday Harbour party and Wayne G's music : Im sorry people but you have nobody to blame but yourselves. Wayne G is known world wide for playing 2 styles of music. His first style is the hard banging "Ice" sound and the 2nd style is the camp , girly handbag stuff. Everybody in the know KNEW in advance that Wayne was told not to play his "Ice" style (that came about after all the complaints last year with Baby Bear playing hard house on the harbour) , thereby by process of elimination it was clearly obvious that he was going to play handbag.
C'mon people , before you go to an event , do your research into the DJ's , that way you wont find yourself at an event with music that isnt to your liking.
If you wanted funkey and summery Ashley , thats why Frankie Knuckles was supplied on the Saturday night !

I don't actually think Baby Bear played any hard house at the Harbour Party - progressive and tribal maybe. Are you sure it wasn't nasty bits of foil you were picking off yourself countdownboy? I seem to recall having two armpits full of it. If you were standing at the right spot during that show you were roasted on from the flames on one side and freezing on the other and it wasn't such a nice feeling on disco bikkies.

Buckingham Palace sources have unofficially confirmed that the main purpose of HM Queen Elizabeth's trip to Australia is to join her son in marching in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. Queen Elizabeth and her youngest son, HRH Prince Edward will march with the PFLAG (Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) group. Her majesty will be carrying a placard saying THIS OLD QUEEN IS PROUD OF HER SON WHO IS A BIG QUEEN Looks like Sydney will be will have a right royal Mardi grass this year. So Queens get your tiaras out, the big Queen is coming. Remember you heard it first from Bazbear! HAPPY MARDI GRAS (and if you believe this you have taken your party pills too soon. :):)

A>D & Marge S - we're similiar age then - how about these Fun / Black / Rat / Sweatbox ( my fav ) Baccanalia and on and on those were the days. And $27caps - in those days the goods were cleaner , no other shit in them. As for Chain Reaction , well that was my first ever eparty and was in the Govt Pavilion and had to be mid 80's not late 80's, 10 drags in total, five at each end of the dance floor , blew me away..............memories.....
Miss P - Wed 27 Feb 2002 09:12:14
1) EC - it was definitely not foil cos I was covered in it. After the snowstorm, a group of us did a conga line down to the front of the RHI where apparently the snow had never made it. We had "snow" in our hair and on our shoulders, everywhere. Boy did we get some funny looks as the people at the front of the RHI didn't even seem to know that there had been a storm. But that was a different era - when MG used to be very, very silly. I can't imagine anyone doing that now. 2) My other fave show was at Sleaze 1993 in the Hordern. Some drag queen with lots of white veils with lazers shining through them to some slow arabic number. It was amazing.
lovin' it. - Wed 27 Feb 2002 09:42:09
Screeeeeeech - Countdownboy and the others just read the rest of the posts...the first Snowstorm was in the Govt Pavilion and repeated a couple of times at later parties. Your right - it "looked" fab but in reality the fvcking stuff was everywhere, sticking to you and weeks later a piece would still surface. Yep- remember the queen you climbed the Govt Pavilion and caused a mass evacuation - saw the cherry picker going to get him out of the rafters... cause we went out one side and they made us walk back across thru the main entrance. And hey Marge S - I still remember those triangular sales - like the bottom of a Stardestroyer - and when they lifted up and sat on their tails with the vari lites and lasers bouncing all over the place - I wet myself....not really but still fondly think of them. Memories - thanks guys.
Miss P - Wed 27 Feb 2002 09:42:49
wow....keep these coming guys.....this is going to be my 4th MG Party this weekend but I love hearing about these Awesome moments at the past parties....I think the big parties lose more and more creative flair each time instead relying more on just the modern technology leaving no surprise or mystery element....did anyone get the blue flyer that mardi gras sent out a few days ago....I'm surprised they didnt include the technical specs for the whole party. My fave party show would have to be the nurses in the electric chairs to Breathe by the prodigy at Weird 98 and Chrissie Amphlett at Sleaze last year was incredible as well. As fro my fave D.j it would have to be Jojo!!!
N - Wed 27 Feb 2002 11:14:42
ohhhh, just remembered another one, Sleaze Ball 1990, "Good & Evil" opening show in the RHI, Chris De Bonnifin (I think, but am open to correction) in the huge devils look from "LEGEND" cumming onto the stage to "relax" by frankie goes to hollywood, than moving into White Angelic Drags & Devilish dykes with baseball bats vogueing off to Madonna LOL

Foil, Paper, it was all fantastic, just the sheer surprise made us all laugh so much. Remember the show in the Horden too, lovin'it, so mesmerising, and really clever, The way the performers unwrapped and then wrapped themselves together, quite stunning!

:( BND is not old enough to remember a snow storm but it sounds like fun. I remember hearing about the Baccanalia parties because I was straight at the time. A lighting designer I was working with at the time was also doing that party and was trying desperatly to convert me, kinda wish he had suceeded now!!!!
BND - Wed 27 Feb 2002 12:57:11
The Chain Reaction show was for Mardi Gras' tenth anniversary in 1988. There were five Dianas coming out of candles at each end of the Government pavilion. Things were a lot less formulaic once but perhaps that was before we all became so spoilt.

Also went to Resident Alien last night and as Arti said it was fantastic. I was a bit sceptical beforehand about a woman being able to play the part of a man but it just goes to show what an excellent actress Bette Bourne is. One of my favorite lines from the play was "Develop a style. Ask yourself, 'if there were no praise, and no blame, who would i be then?' Then you know who you are, and what your style is" Quentin Crisp was an amazing free thinker who I think lived well before his time. Afterwards we had a look at the Boxing Club which was also lots of fun. Portia Turbo, Andy Quan and Paul Dillon (major spunk!!!!) were the guests with Gillian and Kate presiding. Lots of people got up to have their say (even me after a couple of beers), apparently tonight features Richard Cobden which i'm sure would be one not to miss and guess what ITS FREE!!

Sweet Cowboy - Wed 27 Feb 2002 15:03:05
The craziest show i ever remember was at a dance party called "Dance Indulgence" at the Hordern in 1989. During the course of the night on about 10 occassions this little old lady would walk across the stage with a walking frame. Each times she would hobble across the stage from on side to the other and do nothing more than that. Everyone was quite baffled about this and it started to get quite bizarre when on the 7th , 8th and 9th occassions the whole crowd would cheer madly everytime she would appear on stage. Then at about 6am she hobled across the stage again but this time stopped right in the middle of the stage. The song that was playing ended and there was silence. The spot light was shined on her and the crowd were screaming , then her head blew off in a loud explosion !!! It certainly wasnt the right night to be an acid let me tell you :)

Re: Disgruntled Cinema-goer - Mon 25 Feb 2002 13:26:27 I can guarantee that 1) there is a full quotient of lesbians on the board of queerscreen, AND a lesbian Festival Coordinator (the spectacularly gorgeous Angie) who is involved in the programming of all festival films, including lesbian content, and 2) there's a significant lack of quality lesbian films anywhere in the world, so it's not a queerscreen conspiracy to keep them from you! My suggestion is to go out there and make some sexy, funny, thoughtful films yourself, so that i can one day go to a lesbian screening and not have to sit through grumblings from all the girls around me about how there's no 'real' lesbians on screen. queerscreen works excessively hard on a miniscule budget to bring queer (and queer-friendly) images to a sydney audience, and it breaks my heart when the audience doesn't understand just how difficult that can be. i think they did a fabulous job this year, and i'm pleased to say that i'm happily filled to the brim with my share of cinematic queerness for the year!

Well my festival events have ended accept for the big night itself. Been to 8 films and really enjoyed most of them. (can't help but have 1 or 2 duds in my choices) I've seen Sinsation, Resident Alien and tonight DrumDrag and I enjoyed them all. They were all very different and all really good. Then of course there was the Launch and Fair Day as well as a brief visit to Shop Yourself Stupid. Only managed one exhibition which was Where A Man Meets a Man in Sydeny which was really interesting and very beautiful in a strange way. Might just make it to Figs in Space if I can. I guess I've had a pretty good festival though I would have done more if I could fit it in. Now I can't wait for the big night. Only 3 more sleeps (sorry Countdown Boy)

I'm still reeling from Adeva in the Hordern (was that only last year??!!) singing "In and out of my life" and "Warning". I've never heard a voice as stunning as that! Been searching for an Adeva CD since without joy. As to fav DJ...tough, will confine to Sydney DJ's only: Alex Taylor somehow always manages to play a favourite track at the 'right' moment; Steve Allkins always makes me dance my ass off and laugh hysterically at the same time. Class acts!

EC, I remember foil confetti covering me from head to toe at a party maybe 8 yrs ago. It came from exploding "balls" that were hovering above the crowd in the RHI, probably near the end of a show. Oh yes, Bachanalia, they were the days.

Oh, forgot to add my favourite DJ moment would have been Warren Gluck's final set for Mardi Gras (about 1998?). He played "Perfect Day", "Echo Beach", an incredibly trancy mix of "Believe" (Cher)and that classical tune that British Airways used to use for its advertisements. The crowd went off and I am still to see so many hands in the air for so long. An old pinkboard had much to say about Warren following that party, most incredibly positive (where in fact he personally responded), and some negative (not their style). Have a great night everyone. I'm going back to an old outfit seeing Mardi Gras has gone mirror ball mad in the lighting set up this year. The mirror ball necklace gets another run!

over-excited - Wed 27 Feb 2002 16:19:25 - I suggest you tell this to the 60-odd disgruntled lesbians who felt they wasted $15 on "Bad Girls". As paying customers - not lesbian film makers - we expect to see lesbian images on the big screen if it is advertised as such. I understand there were other lesiban movies featured at Queer Screen, but when something is advertised as "lesbian shorts", we expect to see just that. Obviously our expectations were too high.

Disgruntled cinema-goer - Thu 28 Feb 2002 12:25:56 I was one of those 60-odd lesbians, and I understand your frustration with the bad sound quality of the second film (the fault of the filmmakers, not queerscreen), and the less than explicit association to lesbianism in the other films, but the program guide made no reference to it being 'lesbian shorts', but instead specified that it was about 'bad girls'. personally, i thought the final film, 'gang girls 2000', was one of the best films i saw all festival (and i rather liked those gangs of gorgeous lesbians getting it on new york style), so perhaps this is a case of different tastes, rather than a misrepresentation of lesbian interests? i understand your frustration over not getting your fill of tasty screen treats, but again, it wasn't advertised as such, and even though it was part of a gay and lesbian (actually 'queer') film festival, that doesn't mean that only one type of image of gay and lesbian aesthetics or experiences should be provided. that's my view anyway...
over-excited - Thu 28 Feb 2002 14:03:02
over-excited - Thu 28 Feb 2002 14:03:02 - with regard to the bad sound quality of the second film - are these films not viewed/checked before they're included in the festival? Or do Queer Screen simply screen them thinking everything will be OK? If you were in the audience then you would've enjoyed the witty audience participation in between films. Definitely the highlight of the session. But I don't think this is a question of taste - more to do with content. You are right in saying it was promoted as "Bad Girls" not "Lesbian Girls"...but for some reason I assumed it would have something to do with lesbians. What was I thinking?
Disgruntled cinema-goer - Thu 28 Feb 2002 14:55:10

Ozfritz - Thu 28 Feb 2002 16:26:19
Disgruntled cinema-goer - this is probably getting too specific for pinkboard, but if the moderator will allow :) filmmakers send their films to film festivals in the best format that their original print will allow, and not every film festival 'office' has the technology to preview final prints in every format, particularly not for the upwards of 150 different films that come through film festivals in the week or two before the festival commences. they can really only judge quality based on the preview tapes sent to them, and in this case, that film had perfect sound when first viewed. it's an unfortunate by-product of trying to coordinate films from (literally) across the globe, across massively different levels of filmmaking budget (ie. student films, old films, hollywood films), and all within a very short time period, on a limited festival budget. i sound like a queerscreen rep, but i actually just have an 'over-excited' interest! anyway, i did enjoy the witty comebacks of the audience, although i'm glad that my girlfriend and i stayed to the end, giving queerscreen a chance to challenge and entertain us with always unexpected cinematic events (including trying to decipher a film plot with no dialogue track!). i guess that if you were really disappointed with content (rather than only quality), then you'll need to check twice before assuming that a gay and lesbian film festival will only screen explicitly gay and lesbian film content. however, i admit that this didn't work for me in regard to saturday night's screening of the lesbian-in-love-with-another-straight-girl "Replay", which i couldn't bear to sit through to the end. but others loved that, so again, maybe it's just different tastes?

- Thu 28 Feb 2002 22:27:54
Again, may I ask: who is performing, what time and where? We are only a couple of days out and still no-one knows? Surely someone knows!! Can anyone confirm any performers other than Deborah Cox? Can anyone tell us the show times at least? please?!

MOTIV 8 ???!!!! What the F*ck ?? Listening to that stuff in the mid to late 90's was all well and good but not now ! YUK ! Its soooo not now. And who cares what music is in the backroom ? I think theres a higher priority than music going on there dont you think ??

FriskyRocks - Thu 28 Feb 2002 23:27:49
The opening show will be HRH Queen Elizabeth, but I'm not sure is she is singing Bohemian Rapsody or I Want to Break Free. Madonna and Kylie are doing a duet of Enough is Enough (No More Tears) for the closing show. Steps are getting back together for one more show where they will not actually sing (though they may mime) but they will display their dancing prowess.

BND, right with you on that one !! How's a boy to find clothes, organise friends, do hair etc in 36 hours !!!?? :) Dammit.
astromatt - Fri 1 Mar 2002 11:07:51
My family went to see Drum Drag last night at the Seymour centre. It was totally and utterly fantastic. If you're not doing anything tonight, you really should try and get a ticket. Lilith and her percussion boys, as well as being fantastic musicians, were hysterically funny and really put 100% effort into the performance. Yay, I think I saw something special last night.
K - Fri 1 Mar 2002 11:14:23
*** Sweet Cowboy - that was in the Dome and slung between the pillars was a spiders web of chains and they had bears in leather/chains climbing up and down. Real spin-out. Dont remember which party which year though.

Drumdrag? Haven't you heard all those tired old lines before? She lifted them from the very cheapest low rent drag queens in Auckland. The drumming was great but the patter was appalling and so was the 25 minute changes into the stupidest costumes in history. And then there's ripping off Bette Middler's performance of Crackin Up From Havin Lack of Shakin Up in it's ENTIRETY. Word for word incuding the patter. No. Get an act.
This is definitely the opinion of the poster - Fri 1 Mar 2002 14:55:54
Times ! Times !Times ! We all want the times of the shows and venues . I don't care about the performers names PLEASE!!!!!
Desired - Fri 1 Mar 2002 16:57:18
Drum Drag was great. So what if she ripped off Bette Midlers routine. I seem to remember just about every other drag performer I've ever seen has mimed to someone elses songs. This one did what all drags do but didn't mime. I thought it was great fun and as I hadn't seen that Bette Midler routine for years it brought back great memories. Maybe I'll find that movie and watch it again.

Just heard the stats for the parade: 170 floats (same as last year), 6900 people (a bit down from last year). They have tried to make the parade exciting from start to end this year by spreading the glamour through the length of the parade.

Well my debaucherous behavour has begun!!! Went on the E day cruise to Obelisk and had THE BEST TIME there where so many hot boys and we all had so much fun! Unfortunatly I had to go to work so I put my work clothes in a bag, swam ashore, got dressed and (accidently played with a boy on the beach while I was getting dressed) and caught the bus back into the city. Set up the audio and lights on the two floats im looking after (Melbourne marching boys and American marching boys), they both have kick arse sound systems although we had too many lights for one generator and I had to re-patch. Now is just a quick pit stop at home before I head back out onto the strip and meet Ben a cute 21yo boy who I have been talking to on the net and just moved to Sydney today. Hope your all having a good Mardi Gras Eve as well. P.S I hear last nights party was good, any comments?

The Mardi Gras spirit is in the air, was in the line at Stonewall last night and met a really great American guy. Started chatting while we were waiting and once we got inside I bought him a drink (I was only doing the "friendly local thing" *wink*) Anyway we got to talking upstairs in the cocktail bar and had a really interesting conversation about life, love and the universe. Diddn't have the time to take it further ;) but I think he will be one of those people you never loose contact with, and now I got somewhere to stay when I go to New York! Just goes to show its well worth the effort to say Hi when you see someone looking a bit lost (and them being really hot doesn't go astray either LOL).
BND time to get off the net and do all those last min jobs!!!! - Sat 2 Mar 2002 09:55:40

Pete - Sat 2 Mar 2002 13:11:33
It's amazing how the knockers tried to derail Mardi Gras from the outset this year rather tahn supporting it. It seemed like a premediated attempt to cause as much damage as possible. I hope we remember this when they stand up at election time and say they only want the best for Mardi Gras. Enjoy our big day.

2 March, 2002 MARDI GRAS PARTY! Hailed as the world's best party and the climax of the three week Gay & Lesbian festival the Mardi Gras party has a proud history. Never before has a radio station been granted access to broadcast from the event. For the first time this year Triple J brings you all the dance-floor action from the Royal Hall of Industries, the main stage at this year's Mardi Gras. Tune in from 10:00 pm through to 6:00 am and hear DJs Sean Manley, Jake Kilby & Neil Lewis. Sean Manley is the resident DJ at the Stonewall Club in Sydney. His style is a luscious line-up of wailing divas and uplifting beats. Pure Mardi Gras magic as Sean kicks off the broadcast from 10:00 pm to 1:00 am. Jake Kilby is a regular DJ at Mardi Gras and Sleaze. He's also a regular at Arq, Gas, Stonewall & Caesar's. You can find his mixing on disc one of the newly released Mardi Gras Party Anthems CD. Throw your hands in the air and enjoy the happy clappy vibe of Jake Kilby from 1:00 am to 4:00 am. Neil Lewis will take us through to 6:00 am. American all-star, Neil is a resident at San Francisco's Pleasuredome. His signature sound he describes as "uplifting high-energy progressive tribal house"!

I've just read thru this for the first time - and to the guy/gal who said "since when has MG been political?". My love - it's always been political and always should be. It would appear that that you have missed the point almost entirely. Don't care about the the DJs - except for Danny Tagnalia they all sound the same and a good drag show is all you need. Let's face it unless you're way down the front it may as well be a drag queen. But let's face it nothing could be worse that Sheena Easton last year. See you all under the mirror ball at MIDNIGHT. Have a happy Gras

The Aussie Wank Club wishes all in Sydney a great night. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AussieWankClub

Calling all Aussies. can someone tell me if they are putting the main parade on TV,or have I missed it? Being in Melbourne, my daughter and I have watched it since it was first televised when she was 4, she's 12 now. One of these days I'd love to join a group that go in the parade, but as I am the only person I know in Melbourne, looks like I"ll have to start up my own group. I think disabled and parents need more exposure, especially disabled parents who are gay, lesbian, bi or transgender. I'm going back to the TV site at Telstra to see if they have it on in a couple of days, otherwise I guess I'll just have to save up and get a video player so I can buy the video

Well, what a Night! I marched in the PFLAG float (Parents and Friends of Lesbians And Gays) with my Father and my Step-Mum, and it was amazing! The buzz in the air was outstanding! Although, Oxford street after the march looked like Amagedon had struck The weather was great. We got a big down pour at about 2am, but that didn't stop anyone having fun; It just helped to clean the place up a bit. Thank you, Mardi Gras, for yet another amazing night.

Happy Mardi Gras everyone. Was a fabulous party and happy to report that this time I got up to more sex and debauchery than BND did for once. Although he did come home with about 12 different phone numbers and I had to explain and describe where and when he met each, and what they look like. All those intoxicants and cute boys running around confused his poor fragile little mind. We are off soon to have some more romps with some tourists and the few locals BND has not done, before our Mardi Gras is completely over. Should be finished around Tuesday??!! Have a great recovery!!! MWUA!
BND's boy. - Sun 3 Mar 2002 17:06:38
Did someone from SGLMG send out a letter to members suggesting that everyone should wear board shorts at the party this year ? I mean by God it was so blatent ! Could somebody run over me please now, i'm digging a hole and I wont be resurfacing until Thursday !
A>D - Sun 3 Mar 2002 18:27:51
Finally home after what I consider my best M Gras ever ! First party 1993. Opening show with Debra Cox blew me away. Must have been near impossible to get all those drag ego's on one little stage, best drag show in my party experience. Jake - exactly what was expected and required. Bardot actually impressed me, and I was surprised to see the crowds of boys around me singing along ! Well done SGLMG
IMPRESSED - Sun 3 Mar 2002 20:33:44
Happy recovery everyone. The party and parade sounds like it was a smash! I hope every one hade safe fun.
us fan - Mon 4 Mar 2002 05:37:41
Well I certainly had an enjoyable time, but for different reasons than usual. I'm normally a RHI lover, but managed to spend far less time in there this year. My favourite DJ of the night had to be Rachel Auburn, who started hard and kept the Hordern moving through the jelly wrestling for a fab set. Gavin Bright was also really enjoyable, so well done Gavin, a completely different set to the last time I saw you in the RHI for Mardi Gras a few years ago. I only caught little bits and pieces of the RHI DJ's, but Jake Kilby seemed to be generally pleasing the crowd, although, from what I saw (only about 40 minutes), Neil Lewis seemed average at best. I hope this is because the Hordern was sooo good that it was only a compararive issue, and not the Harris Thunderpuss thing revisited. Even ventured into City Live and Bent Street which looked great. CXan't believe people were sitting down eating falafels! Missed most of the shows, (only saw Human Nature), so please post the other ones. Was Countdown Boy spot on?? Is it just me, or are the water bottles shrinking? My mirror ball necklace fell off somewhere into the early hours, mainly due to the energy exherted in Rachel's set. Weirdest sight. Seeing someone I used to work with. The look of shock was hilarious. Have a wonderful recovery all, and hope you found what you were looking for. P.S. Did "Can't get you out of my head/ Blue Monday get a run anywhere?
Mark and I'm ..... - Mon 4 Mar 2002 09:09:27
G'day everyone. Just surfaced after a record sleep. What a FANTASTIC MARDI GRAS! I actually danced almost the entire night (and that was after marching in my first parde with PFLAG - my Mum got to ride on the truck!). Thought that the crowd was really up and the music and lasers were some of the best I've experienced anywhere. Hope you all had as good a time as I did, and have 9or still are) recoving safely! See ya next year!
Mike - Mon 4 Mar 2002 10:53:42
fantastic time ! Dome was on fire. Mandy & Scott were particulary brilliant. Scott seems to have have huge dyke following as most of the womens space moved to Dome when they knew he was on. Mark Murphy was good too. I didnt see any shows: can someone please tell me what I missed ?
Bell - Mon 4 Mar 2002 11:42:37
Neil was great! A change of pace but kept it familiar
- Mon 4 Mar 2002 12:01:11
fantastic party! everybody looked fantastic in sexy jeans and very low cut boardshorts- death to the shorty short thing. loved human nature, paul goodyear was shit. was hoping to meet a guy as good as the one i met last year yet i ended up going home with him again!Could this be commitment - possibly marriage? Too many straights, never doing it again da da da da usual complaints
only flirting - Mon 4 Mar 2002 12:38:02
What a FABULOUS party!!! I want to do it all over again NOW. To everyone who was there, thanks for generating such a great vibe. I thought Deborah Cox & Human nature were Fabbo. Only 2 complaints -the RHI bars running out of beer (oh my god!) & Neal Lewis. I don't think his set 'belonged' in the RHI - to me it appeared that he really didn't capture the crowd, but that's just my opinion! No doubt the rags this week will be full of whingers as usual, but I say a big YAY!! for SGLMG. My friends & I just had the best, most drama free night ever. Roll on MG 2003!
Davy - Mon 4 Mar 2002 15:27:28

luved the dome from whoa to go but sveta did my head in
- Mon 4 Mar 2002 18:06:56
Sveta always does my head in. What was Alcazar like?
- Mon 4 Mar 2002 20:07:11
To say that mardi gras was good is understated.. it was brilliant... ive been to many and 2002 was right up there... i agree with alot of people, the dome was great, dark and sexy, good job.. deborah cox was fab and bardot and human nature were great although i tended to think alcazar wasnt closing material.. But overall i think 2002 was great, id heard of a few problems, but they put on a good party to say the least or should i say most.... cheers...
good time - Mon 4 Mar 2002 20:23:36
Yes it was a good party and for all the other knockers, I thought Neil Lewis was pretty good, though that Stevie Nicks number was a worry and I'm sure I heard a bit of Dolly Parton (?anyone). Deborah Cox was great and Bardot did a great job too, getting right into it, but Human Nature really just performed a song like they were on tour somewhere. There show was really quite dull in that respect, no MG feel to it. Couldn't get into City Live to see Frankie and it was freezing as usual in there anyway. Hordern was great until the jelly wrestling started and everyone just stood there watching. Very dull. Arq recovery was great with their UK DJ and it wasn't even packed until 7am so there you go. That's my 2cents worth.
- Mon 4 Mar 2002 21:29:18
omg....neil played a Stevie Nicks track!!!!......please someone tell me which one it was!!!! (if anyone can remember!!)

I really enjoyed the first two DJs at the RHI (Sean and Jake). I got there right when they opened the doors and danced nonstop until Neil Lewis started, at which point I left. I agree that he didn't fit the RHI type music that Sean and Jake had been playing. But to hear Kylie, Britney, S Club 7, Madonna, Kylie, Dannii, J-Lo, Jessica Simpson, Kylie, Amber, Janet Jackson...and have I mentioned yet another Kylie track? OK, it was lots of fun. :) I thought the shows were terrific. Deborah Cox, Bardot and Human Nature all put on good shows...although the Human Nature dancers etc were kinda boring. Where was the skin, boys? J

Rachel Auburn was fantastic - thank you MG. If you want to import Rachel for more parties you have got my backing. Your right " Mark and I'm...." she started at hammering us that great beat and kept it going. Peter McNamara was also great. To all those knockers of MG - up yours ! the Party was 10/10. We visited all Halls and they all had different sounds, something to please everyone.
More Rachel Auburn please........................ - Tue 5 Mar 2002 09:31:58
I thought Neil was great. It was nice to have a change at that point. Also, it wasn't as if you had no other place to go. Hope everybody has a good recovery.

Well its Tuesday. Wish it wasn't. A couple of comments on the party. Let's start with some constructive criticism so that I can finish on a positive note - can we ditch the promos for the closing number, that was my big disappointment. What happened to having anthemic closing et al "We Are Family" etc. Alcazar are nobodies -and that song is depressing. My other gripe was that the sound in the RHI was awful, could hardly hear the first set, which was very unfair to Sean Manly who seemed to be playing OK. Enough on the down side. On the upside - Dome was brilliant. Putting tribal DJs back in the Dome restored it to its filthy, sleazy glory. Mandy, Scott & Sveta were all sensational - apart from Mandy's psychotic "Chase The Sun" episode. I had begun to think that filthy behavioiur in the Dome was a thing of the past. Absolutely not. Can't comment on the rest of the night as I didn't get out the Dome. Still can't get my head around Sunday.

Dear SGLMG, Can we please, please, please, please, please, please, please have Wayne G back next year? We were still fabulous (of course) but we would have loved some Wayne magic after the sun came up. Excellent party, best I've been to yet -well done everyone!! Did it all really happen -it all seems like a distant memory already. Wishing you all a gentle transition back to reality. P.S Thanks to countdown boy for the show listings -you were spot on (fave show was Deborah - our showgirls looked spectacular)

Yeah, I have to add about the sound at the RHI...it was awful. I really liked the music...but the sound...oh, the sound. And this was right from the start when there was still nobody there. It sounded tinny. J

nb - what is this thing with Stevie Nicks? I was haunted by weird Stevie Nicks co-oincidences all weekend?
lovin' it (stand back) - Tue 5 Mar 2002 11:20:35
Well I have to say that this year's party was one of the best I've been too (started aound 8 years ago). All my friends have said the same. I spent most of my time in the RHI, but had a bit of look around too - and everyone seemed to be having fun - there really was something for everyone. Am inclined to agree that Neil Lewis didn't seem to fit the RHI vibe, but I was happy to stroll around at this stage anyway, so no major concern. Both the Parade and Party were organised exceptionally well - thanks to all. Shows were outstanding!! For an allegedly undersold event organised by an allegedly uninspiring organisation, I thought it was a capacity crowd that should make everyone at SGLMG proud and hopefully now all the whining in the community will stop and they can get on with it. Well done!
ErkoBoy 34 - Tue 5 Mar 2002 11:48:31
The party was absolutely amazing!!! The music was fantastic, the extended area helped make it so much better too!! The crowd was sexy and great!! The shows in the RHI were totally outstanding! Great choice of acts!! It was the best Mardi Gras I've been too... so to all those who tried to dampen it saying "Mardi Gras is over!" I'm sorry.. but if this years is anything to go by...it's just getting better and better! Thanks Mardi Gras! I can't wait for Sleaze this year and MG next year!! I hope they will be just as good if not better!!!!
Oh What a Night! - Tue 5 Mar 2002 11:56:37
Well if that's what its like when numbers are down, then all I have to say is "less is more" that truly was the best party ever (for once the rags will be right). I cant think of a single thing I could complain about, each and everyone was fabulous! Thankyou MG! P.S. I do declare that party shorts are dead!
Pepermint Pattie! - Tue 5 Mar 2002 13:32:19
Hi all. Just pushed back the lid of the coffin to find that it's Tuesday afternoon!! I had been afraid that my impression of the party might just have been the result of my own state of mind on the night. Glad to see others sharing my joy. Oh My God - that was the greatest night I have ever had!!!! What a sexy, happy crowd -everyone was having fun. SGLMG take a bow. I am so proud to be part of a community that can organise such a fantastic event. Yes, there will always be those who say that the parties were much better in the old days but look how far event has progressed. In years past a downpour at 2am would have meant trapesing between venues (often tents) through mud for the rest of the evening & feeling somewhat less than glamourous. Now we have Bent St, City Live, chairs that don't sink into the ground & heaven forbid -decent coffee & real food. Would you really want to go back to the 'good old days' even if we could? We sometimes hear that Mardi Gras is now irrelevant, that our community is becoming too diverse to please everyone with one huge party. Well bugger off - this year the parade was repoliticised & the party seems to have had something for everyone (I'm really pissed off that I missed the jelly wrestling -was one of the guys really starkers?). One of my favourite sights of the evening was seeing a sister riding the bucking penis, hanging on for dear life & giggling her titties off while being cheered on by her dyke mates. Yes, we are a diverse mob -but if we can all get together & have fun like last Saturday night - Mardi Gras is far from finished. Sorry for gushing on, but I think it's great that the people behind the party & parade are receiving such a great wrap. I think I may have become too deep now - it's time to go back to bed. Love to you all XX
Is it really over? - Tue 5 Mar 2002 14:20:08
Does anyone know if the shows are included in a MG video or DVD?
Long Train Running - Tue 5 Mar 2002 15:05:12
my review: deborah cocks = zzz. bardot = giggly & fun. lube wrestling = pointless. hunam nature = rsl matinee show. rachel auburn = cheesy. baby bear = great. mike kelly = fab. mandy rollins = pumping. scott shimmia = flawless & sexy. sveta = kickin ass. mens space = dull & not sexy. womens space = wouldnt let me in. diva bar = too crowded & chatty to enjoy the shows. the smell of food in bent st = gross. the lights in rhi = standard. the lights in hordern = great. the lights in dome = nice & moody. one of the best mardi gras in years. good job to all involved. see ya at sleaze if you can replicate the talent again.
syd_muscle - Tue 5 Mar 2002 17:18:10
My Mardi Gras was good and was up there as being one of the best. Because I had to go home and get changed after the parade it meant that I diddn't get to the party till about 12.30 and was most unimpressed that I wasn't going to be let into the RHI. Being a veteran of getting past security at these kind of events (ala Basment Jaxx at BDO) I waited till the bouncer was looking just far enough in the other direction and bolted past him (with BF cilnging onto my t.shirt for dear life). Got in just in time for the first show which was OK but I wasnt yet "in the mood" so to speak. Did a bit of a wander around the other venues, Jelly wrestling in the Horden was a bit different and a welcome distraction if ya diddn't want to dance. The Dome is never really my kinda thing but everyone seemed to be having fun, City Live was busy but the air cond was way too cold. Mens space was a good place to go and grab a drink if you diddn't like the selection at the party bars (which I don't). Backroom seemed as popular as ever but for some very strange reason I wasn't in the mood for it this year and for I think my first party ever diddn't have sex at all (this will be a shock for those who know me. lol) Spent most of the night between the RHI and Horden. Shows were OK, missed out on Human Nature and would kind of agree that the last show diddn't have the sizzle that we are used to. Frankie Knuckels was playing a great set when I popped in there at one stage. As I mentioned previously I recorded JJJ onto a 4hr tape on long play and have been listening to it and would have to say the Seans set is fantastic. Nobody can complain that there was not enough handbag. Afterwards I took the American boy I met on Friday night to the gutter and it was as tragic as ever. The gutter used to be fun but it is now a pittiful display of how wasted people get, especially those passed out on the middle of the street on GHB. Then went to the orgy which was up to par, perhaps a bit quieter than past years. After a quick shower it was off to Frisky and once again had a great time with friends. Got to drag my favourite pair of overalls out again and do the "oops they almost fell off routine" (as tired as it might be at least I was having fun :). Met a very very cute Tasmanian boy (apart from the BF, he was definitly "pick of the party") and got up to all sorts of naughiness at the front of the stage and afterwards he came home with us for a ah, "lay down". Finally got to bed at 4pm yesterday and slept for 17 hrs (I had been awake for 55.5hrs!!!). Woke up kinda hungry cause I hadn't eaten since 1pm Saturday but seem to be remarkably well recovered now. Each year I keep a diary of how much I drink, spend on tickets and "other" things. Looking at this year I reckon the Mardi Gras season cost me about $8000 all up. That might seem like a lot but I don't spend more than I can afford, I take care of have myself and don't let myself get out of my depth and more than anything else I try and have fun at whichever party I go to, with what ever dj is playing and what ever they are playing. I hope everyone out there also made the best of a great Mardi Gras season and I would like to say thanks to all the people who work hard to put it all together.
BND Done Sydney now off to corupt the land of the long white cloud. LOL - Tue 5 Mar 2002 17:34:39
And the parade? Or don't any gay and lesbian people actually go to that anymore?
- Tue 5 Mar 2002 19:11:36
My My , All this glowing good feeling fuzzyness about just one dance party ! Sorta makes you wanna go out and be seen kissing babies in public ! I'm quite happy to go along with public opinion on this one except for one issue which i am going to drag up yet *AGAIN* and I hope that SGLMG reads this wall and actually takes notice of it instead of sweeping the issue under the carpet like it ALWAYS does.
Conratulations to Sean Manley , Jake Kilby , and Paul Goodyear who played music that was expected in the RHI. All 3 DJ's played content that was right on par with the "The RHI Norm" so to speak.
In previous posts there seems to be an underlying consensus that the American DJ Neil Lewis's set from 4-7am fell along long long way short of the mark in quality compared to the the 3 Sydney based DJ's who played the RHI. I am in total agreement to this train of thought.Once again the Sydney DJ's totally outshone the lack luster effort of a so called big name overseas DJ ! Strike up another name for the Barry Harris wannabe list !
Jake Kilby finished with a tremendous bang at 4am, the Yank DJ came on and the RHI then died in the arse musically until Goodyear picked up the pieces at 7am. Lets face it , the overseas DJ's just DONT GET IT when it comes to the RHI. How many times must we bet let down by people who dont have an understanding of the musical culture of a space such as is the RHI. It was so disappointing to have a room what was brilliantly going off for the 1st half of the night to then fall in a ditch and came back again at the finish.
The only positive you can draw from this is that Neil Lewis certainly created an opportunity for RHI lovers to have a breather and explore other halls. The fact that I stopped dancing soon after Neil started at 4am possibly conserved enough energy for me to last thru till 9.30am when I called it quits.
To summarise I would say I had a good night and the party itself was pretty good too, its just this bloody issue of overseas DJ's being picked to play at these parties who arent briefed enough by SGLMG as to what is expected of them in a particular hall. So one could say the blame is to be laid at the hands of SGLMG rather than the DJ ? The Overseas DJ's in the other halls seem to have played appropriate content for their halls, why cant they get the mix right in the RHI ? Lack of research by SGLMG into prospective overseas DJ's is a thought that comes to mind. Hope everyone is recovering well.

the stevie nicks track was "planets of the universe" off her latest album trouble in shangri la. It was the illicit mix. It hasn't been released here as a single but you can get it over the net from the States. The Tracey young mix is much better. This is also on the American maxi single.

as a friend of the local DJ's in the RHI, I have to tell you that they were furious with the technical team hired to set up the sound system in the RHI. Yes the volume was ridiculously low, and the sound quality was poor. The equipment was not set up correctly and there were major dramas between Kilby and Lewis' set with rewiring. You may also have noticed that Manley and Kilby were both forced to fade tracks out before the shows because technical staff couldn't wait the two or three minutes the tracks had left. Crowd dissapointment was obvious when In Your Eyes by Kylie was faded out after the first verse.

With overall deminished budget for this year's MG festival, parade and party. I think the guys and gals at SGLMG managed to pull-out something really special at the party. Probably didn't have the WOW factor of 2001, but it's definitely up there. Thought Sean, Jake and Neil were excellent, Neil's change of pace just hit the spot for me - may be that's the sound I really like? Paul was okay - may be I was getting tired by then. Sound quality in the middle of the RHI was a disappointment - suggestion to SGLMG: have sets of speakers hanging from the ceiling to serve the "quiet spots" in the middle? Thanks for yet another fun party.

Well done SGLMG, I for one hope to see a continuation of different musical styles in the RHI. As the premier dance space and at $113 a ticket every party goer has a right to, at some stage of the night, hear a style of music they enjoy in the RHI. So to all of you who feel that you and your handbags own that space, you don't. Get off your jaded butt and explore the rest of the venue or just go spend the night at ARQ! Great party, well executed, but let's not pretend it was anything but consistant with the previous years.

Yes, one of the male jelly wrestlers was starkers to the delight of many in the crowd and was that rainstorm really at 2am? I thought it was about midnight. Guess that sums up my state of mind at the time. I agree with the sound difficulties in the RHI, notably at the beginning of Neil Lewis's set. The speaker at the back Right Hand Corner was cactus for a few tracks, causing people to move in all other directions. BND, wish you the best overseas and to all the others I have spoken to, hope you continue to enjoy the parties as much as I have since 1990. This was probably my last as it is time to settle into family life (never say never?)so thankyou Panther for the service you have provided (often without thanks) and the work that obviously goes into it. The community has come a long way in my 15 or so year association and still has challenges in front. My only comment in relation to future parties and this medium of communication is to be constructive in criticism and remember that everyone's tastes may not be the same as yours. Diversity is a wonderful thing, not a threat or problem. As I hang up my dancing shorts and fade a Kylie track out.....

My last message got lost. Dear "MascLeatherGuy" - the men update? The men were mighty fine in the Dome. Finer than usual actually. They were finger licking good at the Barracks afterwards. Literally. However it was all about the music on the night - especially in the Dome. However I agree that this boardshorts thing has to finish - I was shocked at some of the doyens of the Melbourne community who were dressed rather casually. I found that a little bit of leather went a long way.

Dear Panties - someone ripped my red hot pants off me in an effort to beat me into the porterloos during the rain storm. I had to let them have them as I was having flashbacks to a traumatic incident with a porterloo at a previous Inquisition. I think I'll have to give up the Paradise Garage look as I was recently told that 1978 was more my thing than 1982. I guess that I have to live with whatever advice I'm given.

I'm sitting here on Wednesday night really trying hard to fight off this awful post dance party depression that I feel. At age 39 I dont feel like I belong at these sorts of events anymore and the current generation of younger gays and lesbians have such a pathetic ageism attitude about them. The young people on the scene mock and laugh at us older gays. How did this happen ? I remember being 19 but I never remember me or any of my friends thinking older gay guys didnt belong. In fact I had a great respect for these people. Now I am one and I'm laughed at. Growing old as a gay man in this city is a cruel thing indeed particulary without a partner. I think Mardi Gras 2002 will be the last time I attend one of these dance parties. I'm not sadistic enough to be treated like a lepper for one minute longer. The community that I thought was 'my' community only seems to apply if you are up with all the trends and know all the current dance tunes. I dont need this anymore, nor do I want it.

It was a fantastic party indeed!! The shows were great!! I thought that Neil Lewis wasn't really 'right' in the RHI...he kinda broke the theme! Other than that the music was the best!! Sorry Mycle....I don't agree with your comments. There are other venues to go to for different music styles...that is why they are there! RHI is one type of music style and the dj's should stick to that style....the people who go to the RHI expect that! If you want a different style go to the Hordern, Dome, Fox and Lion or City Live!!
Thanks Mardi Gras!! - Thu 7 Mar 2002 11:47:51

Hey had a wonderful Mardi Gras, couldnt believe that there were 7 different dance halls at the Fox Studios, my favourite one was the Dome, I come from Germany, I love it here so much that im planning to move to Sydney permanently sometime next year. The recoveries at the Laneway, Barracks, Oxford Pub and Midnight Shift were so great. Didnt get to bed until 7am Tuesday from Friday night. Well keep up the great work brothers and sisters and you all are priviliged to live in such a wonderful and beautiful (as well as being open minded) city. I will be going to the 25th Mardi Gras next year, a must for me. :))) Can someone tell me when Inquistion is on and how much it costs for a ticket. Thanks brothers and sisters

To W (Wed 6 March), welcome to the real Gay world buddy, times have changed so much since your time. Remember we are only young once so naturally it is our turn to have a great time while we are young, you were like this when you were our age, when we get to your age, it wont be the end of the world, i know of some 50 years old guys who party, in fact i think they party harder than i do!!! (I am 25 years old), so instead of knocking us young people down, just sit back and think of the good memories of your era. I know that many young people dont laugh and mock at guys your age, why would we? i know for a fact that lots of young guys including myself like going out with older men, so please dont think negative and try to think positive and focus on the good times. If you dont like the scene as it is now then you have the right not to want to join with us, but please leave us young guys to have a good time. Thank you buddy.
Samoht - Thu 7 Mar 2002 13:38:45
Dear W, cheer up pet!!! I am 35 and don't feel that I am mocked by the young un's. You must be having a severe come down. The best thing I find about the Mardi Gras parties is the lack of attitude normally encountered on the scene. I certainly don't think that growing old in Sydney is a cruel thing at all. This is one of the best places in the world to be gay -just don't spend your whole time just hanging around nightclubs & bars or you will get bitter & twisted. Have a look at a community groups listing, find something you are interested in & go along for a look. You will find heaps of friendly guys & girls, young & old, whose lives don't revolve around Arq. I find clubbing heaps of fun, but it shouldn't be your only contact with the community. Hell, why not join something like GLRL or Ankali & make a real difference. See you at MG 2003 !!
Jack in tha box - Thu 7 Mar 2002 14:01:28
Dear W and Thomas or samoht - just because some inconsiderate little cvnt said something does not mean all young gays are inconsiderate. We go as a group of 8 to 10 and half are in their 20's and the other half in their 40's and mix extremely well. There is always some bastard whether male/female , straight/gay who has a mouth and with a few choice words spoils someones night. If you cant think of a quick smart reply just spit at them and walk off. Never give trash a second thought.
Aunt June - Thu 7 Mar 2002 14:59:51
I agree with W - The G&L community has for so long struggled for equality and a recognition that discrimination by way of sexual preference is wrong. Yet when it comes to our own we treat our older community members like 2nd rate citizens. Ageism within the G&L community is rife and it stinks in my opinion. Ive always held the opinion that ageism is the most evil of all discriminations yet it occurs in its strongest way within the G&L community of all places ! Most young gays think that to be an older person on the gay scene is to be a letch, a pedo , a dirty old man , etc which is a disgraceful , outlandish and generalising statement. Then there is the issue of how younger gays laugh and mock the "bear" community. In most respects we are such a self centred sort of community, selfish to the last moment. What I see in the club scene in recent years doesnt impress me and I cant see any light at the end of the tunnel. We are all gay men and lesbian women regardless of our looks or age, yet we more so than the straight community take great joy in being total bastards to each other in the way we have no respect for each other. I dont think SGLMG has even scratched the surface when it comes to trying to bring us all together in a session of self respect. In fact I feel they arent even trying. Maybe the whole concept that we as G&L's should lead the way in loving and respecting each other is all a bit too much of a "pie in the sky" thought.
Darren R - Thu 7 Mar 2002 15:19:32
Oh dear, another "we own the RHI dance space" punter. Too bad the SGLMG seems to agree with me LOL. Back at ya buddy, "There are other venues to go to". None of the halls should be there for a certain type of music. The beauty of the Mardi Gras Party is that you can only expect the unexpected. It was pure joy for me to hear a bit of "hardcore" in the RHI this year, nice to be included in the premier space instead of exiled.
Mycle - Thu 7 Mar 2002 15:53:06
Who was that red headed guy in the revealing leather outfit with the cartoon bubble on his head... "You can touch but don't look."? I see him at sooooo many parties/parades and everytime he amazes me with a clever new look or comment which always makes a statement. Keep up the good work, you are much appreciated amongst my friends and myself.
bubble, bubble, toil and trouble - Thu 7 Mar 2002 18:30:57
Um, hello out there but can anyone tell me of any straight environment in which different generations mix in the way they do in the gay and lesbian community? Of course some young people in their teens and early 20s are going to look at people twice their age as though they're ancient. I certainly did. Okay, some of them are rude and immature. Nothing new there. Ageism is a reality of life and not something confined to the G&L community. How many 20yo people go to raves and expect to see their parents on the dance floor? The younger gays "mock" the bears? Please. How many bears slag off at "twinks"? People are individuals. Try to remember that and don't apportion blame for an individual's behaviour to an entire group. People having been doing that to us for 2000 years. On the other hand, if you're still writing to the Star complaining about no Village People being played at the party, I have no sympathy. :-P

Well..most of the people that I've spoken to who were in the RHI loved the DJ's except for Neil Lewis. All he really did was give us a reason to explore the rest of the grounds until his set finished. I'm not saying he was bad but just not really right for the RHI. Still...it was a fantastic night had by all!!
Happy! - Fri 8 Mar 2002 11:45:27
Dear Chiclet, Thanks for the info. I was at first hesistant to visit a site named 'pigfucker' considering his past exploits but I'm glad I did. Though I agree with the eye catching remark, my original comment was more related to the creativity as evidenced by his linked ethel site. Just spent an hour or so wandering around the inside of his head, it's a bit scary. I'm glad he has the gay events to let it all out as I expect the streets of Sydney wouldn't be very safe with him wandering around with all this trapped in his skull. I wasn't aware of the extent of this guy's involvement and it appears as if there is still a lot to be included. There are plenty of eye catching guys in Sydney but I wish they all had the wit and humour of the SODOMITES and Krusty, the politics of Bougainville, the satire of Cussons, the community spirit of Hop Yourself Stupid, the lunacy of Dick van Dykes on Bikes, but made not the audacity of Not so Superman, the enthusiasm for such style and the guts to actually do it. What did he do in this year's parade?
bubble, bubble, toil and trouble - Fri 8 Mar 2002 12:34:55
Well. I'm impressed. I think this year's party did it's job , and you have to admit this community is a hard one to please. There's always going to be someone bitchin'... that's half the fun. I have to agree with comments re: musical styles in RHI,Hordern (and Dome of course) remaining what we expect them to be, because those styles have become a staple for the masses and expectations can make or break a persons' night, but so can their pills. I spent the majority of my night in the Dome which was by far the party central for me. More of the same next year please ;)
- Fri 8 Mar 2002 16:14:15
oh dear me, just been reading the oh so sad comments by you boys. Buck up little troopers 39 ain't so old and sweetie 25 ain't all that young. At 36 I take delight in what and old and dear friend once said to me "It's good to see young queens cumming along so nicely" So "W" take heart in 2 things, somewhere out there, a 50 year old dancing queen is saying just this about you, and never forget Karma, nasty queens be they older or younger always get it in the end. I'm off to soak my feet AGAIN, should never have worn those new Doc's, but they looked so fab with the kilt LOL.
Marge S. - Fri 8 Mar 2002 16:59:20
It'll be a sad day when the same old tunes in the same old halls with the same old crowd is what we look foreward to once a year, does anybody out there know the meaning of the words "stagnant", "predictable" and "lazy"? Once again well done SGLMG, you've restored sum of my lost faith, now lets work on the shows! Give the overpriced os acts the boot! Use local talent! If you've gotta use a big name then let them cum to us, it's an honor to perform at the party.
Mycle - Fri 8 Mar 2002 18:31:03
so then, who's sadistic enough to be going out this weekend ?
- Fri 8 Mar 2002 19:28:43
Something which no one seems to have considered as a reason for numbers dropping at the party: straight and perhaps some gay promoters are cashing in on Mardi Gras by bringing out big name international DJs who are playing in opposition to the party. How many events were there staged in opposition to Mardi gras this year? The same thing has been done in Perth for the past 4 years, with a huge Ministry of Sound party deliberately staged on the same night as the Pride parade and party. The impact on Pride is devastating - nearly all of the friendly straights and a large number of gays and lesbians now go to Ministry in preference because Ferry Corsten or Tall Paul or whoever is playing there. There is no way they can compete and still cater to a diverse range of gay and lesbian people. So suggesting that Mardi Gras drop the internationals will probably not be in its best interests. If they really want to ensure their financial survival they'd be better off dropping the shows and the locals altogether. But then what would be the point. Catch 22.
- Fri 8 Mar 2002 19:39:15
Some people have been saying that changing the music at the RHI is good instead of keeping the same type of music associated with this site. Well, if this were true, then how come the music at the other venues don't really change? When are we going to hear Britney Spears and S Club 7 at the Dome? J
- Fri 8 Mar 2002 23:57:06
i thought the lighting in the R.H.I was fantastic good one Moose
- Sat 9 Mar 2002 01:54:06
oh please darling, to suggest that the SGLMG party can't survive without international DJ's is a complete and utter load of trash! Not my usual mood I know love, but if I want a dull international party I'll fly to Ibiza! Perth! sweetie, get real!
Marge S. - Sat 9 Mar 2002 02:08:14
Yes there is quite abit of discrimination in the G&L community. But there is abit less of it in the GLBT community. W, you should common on over and join us and leave those nasty little ageist queens to themselves! Eventually they'll be old too (if they're lucky).

Note to SLGMG: someone please re-work the bars and how they are run! They were appalling at times this year. Only one person handling the cash in each bar?! At 8am in the RHI (right-hand side) two out of three bars had closed, which is fair enough if getting quiet. The remaining open bar had one person (!) serving/handling money. The rest of the staffers were standing around chatting or tidying up. Even the guy on the till couldn't pay attention to serving. There was a 5 person deep crowd of people trying to get drinks. As I was trying to get a water for a sick friend this left a lot to be desired!! Otherwise, good party but I certainly wouldn't go crazy with the "best ever" tags. Thanks countdownboy for the show times (although I only ended up seeing DC)..
just a boy... - Sat 9 Mar 2002 14:58:10
Don't be parochial Marge daaaaaaaahling. No one said it CAN'T survive, just questioned whether the falling numbers and the competition from internationals was related. Did you have a late reaction?
- Sat 9 Mar 2002 16:15:04
rummaging around, I found a 1996 party ticket - price $65!! For those needing the math, that's a 69% increase to the 2001/02 ticket price. Ouch! Fox would be taking a much higher fee these days, but I wouldn't mind seeing MG scale-back the size of the party. Less is more! Harbour Party is a case in point.
just a boy... - Sat 9 Mar 2002 15:16:24
GALMG, Thank you for a wonderful party, over the last few years it just gets better. Looking forward to the 25th Party in 2003. Madonna, Babs and Miss Ross will be excellant.
Mikeof 18parties - Sat 9 Mar 2002 20:01:04
Madonna and Miss Ross? They'd LOVE to do it. But can you afford $1,000 for a ticket to make it worth their while to sit on a plane for 20 hours to sing one song to 8,000 or so people. Babs is already booked and singing for 17 people at a birthday party on Park Avenue.
EC - Sat 9 Mar 2002 22:10:58
Just a Boy. Harbour Party in 2000 was $50 a ticket - this year it was $85 - a 59% increase in just two years, rather than the five years you are comparing MG tickets. Yes Mardi Gras needs to be scrutinized but let's be fair and balanced in our comparisons. For example Pride NYE 2001 was $95 a ticket and there is really no comparison with what Mardi Gras presents.
- Sat 9 Mar 2002 22:18:23
I wasn't suggesting we compare prices of different parties. Rather, I was saying that less is more, smaller is better, etc and used Harbour Party as an example of a great party on a much smaller scale. Totally different parties, different market, I know. I'd like to see MG cut back on venues and reduce ticket numbers (may just bring back the excitement of the need to buy tickets early to avoid disappointment..). I just find that the party is too huge in it's current form. Too many things to do in too short a time!!
just a boy.. - Sun 10 Mar 2002 00:22:57
Harbour Party is an event that is fairly exclusive to those who really want to go and make the effort to get tickets, i think Mardi Gras has to be huge so that it can cater for the whole community, thats the whole idea of the party, where everyone comes out and there's something for everybody.
Blue Angel - Sun 10 Mar 2002 12:32:03
Too short a time?!!! Are you mad?! Doesn't the party go for 12 hours? Even if you get there late i'm sure you can get around and see all the different things that there are to offer. Just go for a walk. That's what i did and i think i managed to see everything. and if i didn't.....it's only a party :)
- Sun 10 Mar 2002 13:08:10
That is truly correct, it IS ONLY a party. Theres more to life than pinkboard and dance music and dance parties and drugs. C'mon guys and gals , get out there and be human beings. I havent been to one of those awful dance parties in 3 years and i consider myself happier than I have ever been. Find yourself an interest other than the scene because once you turn 40'ish the scene isnt going to be there for you and you still have on average 20-40 years to live your life ! Less than 50% of all gays and lesbians actually do the scene/club thing cause there are better things to live your life for.
A Better Life - Sun 10 Mar 2002 13:41:11
Yes let's reduce Mardi Gras back to one big hall so we can all party together. The music can be handbag from 10 to 2, trance from 2 to 6 and tribal from 6 to 10. Everyone happy with that?
- Sun 10 Mar 2002 14:49:50
looks like I wont be going to the party until 6am.
Chiclet - Sun 10 Mar 2002 19:35:50
If you dont arrive till 6am will we miss you chiclet ? Two letters, "N" & "O"
- Sun 10 Mar 2002 21:49:35
One big hall, how dreary that would be. Imagine having to put up with the RHI cram for any longer than necessary to see the shows and when the shows are as tragic as they wrere this year that would be way too long. The columnist in this weeks Metro got it right as far as I'm concerened. Bardot and Human Nature - what an insult to gay Sydney which used to have some credibility and taste. In the past we've had genuine diva's such as Chaka Khan and Kylie and now they give us bands you wouldn't travel to your local shopping centre to see in a blue fit. I mean did these tired old manufactured has-beens pay Mardi Gras for the privilege or what. (and I won't mention the abominable Alcazar because I'm sure their 1 second of fame has well and truly passed. Was that just the worst song any of us have ever heard!?) The only saving grace of this year's party was the sublime Frankie Knuckles and the boys in Dome (the music in Dome wasn't half bad either). Give us diversity and a multitude of spaces please otherwise it won't be a party worth going to.
Felix - Mon 11 Mar 2002 09:21:14
A suggestion MG - is there another place the sex space can be put ? it takes up too much of the Hordern and the best spot for bleachers that ever was. In the past the mens space/sex space was incorporated into one area ( yes I know a tent ) but if you can block of part of the Hordern, why not block of part of the Dome which has always had a name for sex behind the curtains/and its toilets ? Way too obvious a place and the sight of people doing themselves up as they came out or trying to be innocuous as they enter kept people laughing. And to " A better life " - so we go to Dance Parties so we must have nothing else in our lives and must be vacuum head boring the rest of the time ? We as a group have plenty of other things we do as a group, as singles right throughout the year........we are human beings for the majority of the year but just love those damn awful dance parties about 6 times a year. Different strokes for different folks dear , so stop trying to shove your lifestyle onto other people.
Can we please move the sex space somewhere else ?????????? please - Mon 11 Mar 2002 10:03:12
Spent last night listening to Wayne G at Arq. I had a great time , his music was really good. About time I got a chance to listen to a set of really commercial handbag music at this venue. The question that is on my lips is how can Wayne get acclaimed success in this city playing that style of handbag when there are some local DJ's who play exactly the same stuff who are ridiculed and never get selected to play at MG events ? I think there are a couple of current DJ's who play that sort of stuff far better than Wayne ever has yet if I mentioned their names most people would laugh at me.
just a boi - Mon 11 Mar 2002 12:01:00
I find myself agreeing with Marge! You go girl, why even suggest it if you don't support the idea and why choose to word a a statement like this, "If they really want to ensure their financial survival they'd be better off dropping the shows and the locals altogether". Perth indeed! The reason for the slow ticket sales is very simple, the slack is usually picked up by the boys from the USA, and this year they're cumming for the Gay Games instead. Wait till next year and see if I'm wrong! And that sex space, cut the losses on that and put more bleachers back.
Mycle - Mon 11 Mar 2002 12:49:30
Ouch sweetie.Perth is growing them with big nasty teeth and sharp little tounges LOL. Not going to get into a slang off darlings, you all can read the post in question and make up your own minds. As to my late reaction? To what sweetie? I'm sure I don't know what you mean ;-)
Marge S. - Mon 11 Mar 2002 12:58:18
Perhaps you ARE right Mycal, and Marge. Perhaps. Or perhaps not. But being rude and parochial about some place just because it's west of Elizabeth doesn't become you. this little ex-Sydney boy has been to 19 Mardi Gras. How many have you been to? For a lot of people who are mostly interested in the music, the question of whether they want to pay $50 for a DJ they know they'll enjoy or $110 for Bardot and Human Nature may be the difference between Mardi Gras and another rival event on the same night. Simple as that. A question, not a statement.
- Mon 11 Mar 2002 15:06:40
MG2002 was great! I think that MG need to look at the price of tickets though! As for the music...who can complain? I agree with those that believe that the music in the RHI should stay as it always has...that is "Hands in the air". To include harder music there would ruin the atmosphere. After all...do you hear handbag music at all in the Dome throughout the night?? As for moving it back into one hall...oh please! That would be going backwards!
- Mon 11 Mar 2002 15:27:36
I'd rather pay $180 to ensure the event keeps 100% local content and talent, check out the rest of the walls, I've responded to the "How many have you been to" question so many times I'll no do it again. Once again you said "If they really want to ensure their financial survival they'd be better off dropping the shows and the locals altogether." a statement not a question, maybe I've misunderstood? . Bugger the rival events, there's only one show in town that night. The Perth thing was a joke babe, this little Kiwi boy got used to it years ago.
Mycle - Mon 11 Mar 2002 15:44:19
whats the deal with wayne g he was dreadful at harbour party could he not play something from this century ????? locals are more in tune with what we luv...
locals are better - Mon 11 Mar 2002 16:17:17
wonder if any of you made it out to two tribes a straight event for sure with a smattering of gay people but what fun it was....... international dj after international dj pure bliss more fun than mardi gras
diversity - Mon 11 Mar 2002 16:22:18
SEX space in Hordern - agree Mycle and other post. If they can have a sex space now then put it in Dome where it always used to happen anyways. Takes up the whole side of Hordern. Dont think I saw one of them walk out of the space and back onto the dance floor. Headed straight out the door and more likely back to the mens space or Dome anyways.
Hordern Fan................................ - Mon 11 Mar 2002 16:23:35
Felix, just read your post! You are so on the button it's not funny. Clever shows, local DJ's, and a re engagement with the GLBT arts community are really needed. The live acts this year were expensive (no doubt), a waste of $$$$$$, and nothing to do with the GLBT community.
Fluffy - Mon 11 Mar 2002 17:42:17
dear "Mon 11 Mar 2002 15:27:36" I believe I heard some handbag music in Dome at this years party. it was a green velvet handbag at approx 7.05am. whatever happened to "hard bag" ? is it still alive ?
Mr Panties rrp $2450 - Mon 11 Mar 2002 17:49:49
one hall ??????? yeah just the dome with dome music
- Mon 11 Mar 2002 19:17:12
Some handbag in the Dome? Mandy played "Billie Jean", "Groove Is In The Heart" and "Chasing The Sun". Sveta played "Male Stripper" (I think - I was kinda far away at that stage). In small doses maybe - Sveta also played "1000 Screaming Faggots" - from the ridiculous to the sublime. It's that big melting pot that makes it all worthwhile.
lovin' it - why am i still on this board? - Mon 11 Mar 2002 19:13:16
Mr Panties the future is clutchpurse trance. Sorry Mycle, I left the question mark off "but then what would be the point?" Rhetorical.
- Mon 11 Mar 2002 19:31:34
in regards to wanting to move the sex spaces.......complaining about the entry's/exits being too obvious......god you sound just like the heroin addicts in the cross complaining that they wont go to the legal injecting rooms because the doorways too public and they don't want to be seen...listen to yourself!!
- Tue 12 Mar 2002 01:10:59
1000 Screaming Faggots ? is that a cover version of Ultra Nate's 10,000 Screaming Faggots ?
Strictly Chicken Records - Tue 12 Mar 2002 01:35:04
To Tue 12 Mar - re entry - quite an offbeat comparison there - heroin addicts ? Dome has always had the sleaze reputation. The RHI/Hordern have not. I agree with other posts who were being quite nice about asking if it could be moved, not stopped just moved. Generally the mens space/sex space were under the one roof. From the number of people using the mens space at Fox & Lion, it could have done with the sex space being there as never seemed to be busy.
Still reckon the Dome is best place for the sex space - Tue 12 Mar 2002 10:34:46
OK I left a zero off it. Everything is diminished at the moment.

With internationals at Mardi Gras, 2 Tribes was a whole crowd of people who hyped up to see DJ's who they knew they liked, doesn't really apply to Mardi Gras crowd... With the internationals that have played at Mardi Gras / Sleaze people usually much prefer the locals anyway, eg. Barry Harris, Wayne G, Neil Lewis. Having one international in a room lets you listen to something you wouldn't usually get to hear but still get plenty of favourites out of your our locals as well.
Blue Angel - Tue 12 Mar 2002 13:48:06
BND, We miss you already :(

Hey guys, lots of you talk about the party tickets being too high - in 2001 the party made approx $1m profit this year is likley to be something a bit less. Most of this profit goes to funding MG Festival events and some of the public art. Many of the Festival events are heavily subsidized by the party eg an evening of baroque music with champagne included at Government House was only $28 a ticket! If you guys aren't happy with this let your voices be heard at the AGM and get proper pricing for Festival events so that party ticket prices need not be as high.
Concerned about party profits - Tue 12 Mar 2002 18:38:24
It's almost time to close this wall and I would like to end it on a high note. So how about some great or funny Mardi Gras memories. I will be opening a Party wall soon.
Panther - Tue 12 Mar 2002 21:01:54
So what if the party profit is extremely high. The Australia council is not renoun for funding G&L artist in this counrty, thankyou MG for doing so. Party ticket profits also fund the parade/launch & fairday. All these events allow other community groups such as BGF, Luncheon Club, Counselling service etc make considerable money, which helps them survive. Many people who pay for party tickets will also use the services of such community groups, for free. My point being, the profit goes beyond subsidising festival, it ends up back in the community. It has clearly been a hard year financially for MG and I am sure that the whole community will suffer as a result. How many tickets did BGF sell to the raised seating this year? What will be the impact of poor ticket sales to this? A small report in the SSO stated that party ticket donations for people living with HIV/AIDS would have been non existant if MG didn't donate a considerable amount. How many people were unable to attend party as a result? You can pay $110 and support our community for an event that is consistantly good or around the same other parties, where the quality & production varies & the money goes into a promoters wallet. Your choice!

amusing mardi gras memory #1:Dome. a trashed young queen with a very long feather on his hat, leaning back on the guard rail in front of the DJ. tilting his head back & accidently kncking the needle on the record with the tip of the feather. I believe the DJ will be pressing charges. I wont mention any names but it was around 5am (not hard to work out)

Mardi Gras highlight - Leaving the party. Leaving what I thought was the worst put together event in many years. Poor sound quality in most of the big halls, the rain storm at 1am , 3 appauling pop bands as shows that have no relevance to the community at all. The best hightlight was clearly the fact that I got a cab on Driver Avenue within seconds of walking out of this forgettable night. I can only hope for a better result next year.

My memorable moment was doing the parade with a straight guy from work, he was sent along because it was assumed that I would be having too much fun and forget what I was really there for. In reality it was him who was leaning over the baracades kissing people and getting HIS photo taken with all the marching boys while I was doing the right thing and keeping an eye on things.

This year? It had to be the "how do I get into the porterloo in the rain" bit. Where we all ran like demented maniacs to fight other people off from the loos. And that's not how I lost my red cordouroy hot pants. And then there was the music. Howver, the best bit was what happened after Mardi Gras. And I'm not describing that on this board.

I have to agree with Michael - It definitely was the worst Mardi Gras party I've been to.. Shows were pathetic, music in RHI didn't work out too well. I absolutely loved Jake Kilby at Sleaze in CityLive but I don't think it worked on a big scale or maybe it was just a poor quality of the sound system. I actually thought american dj's was ok. Hopefully it'll be better next year.
IG - Thu 14 Mar 2002 13:47:18
So, now that most have taken time to express their opinions on this board, how many are really going to stand by what they've said and be responsible to forward their own opinions to the relevent bodies etc so that improvements can be made? Is that a feather that dropped?
vigilante - Thu 14 Mar 2002 16:58:31
vigilante - If mg actually wanted input from their members they'd be taking the advice and feedback that has been posted here for the past few years. It's a public forum and anyone at mg can access this site. They certainly know about it. And if they don't take this stuff into account then they are doing themselves a diservice. Let them go off and get a telephone marketing company to do their research for them - it's only more money down the drain considering all this stuff is here for them free of charge. .......although one could argue that the posts here are moderated so that it's really only a reflection of what the moderators think is acceptable criticism (ie. my post about how we don't care about anything but partying and when a high court judge gets lamblasted for being out we don't give a shit because all we care about is partying - that post never made it onto this board).
WD - Fri 15 Mar 2002 10:34:15
Well vigilante , I certainly passed onto MG my thanks for a great party yet again but asked would they please consider putting the sex space somewhere other than the Hordern. I agree with other posters, the mens space and the sex space used to the same place (tent ). The 12 or so mens in the mens space we saw at about 2am looked un-utilised. I'm sure there were other times when it was busy but lets put the two spaces back together and bring back those fab bleachers that were always there in the Hordern since the late 80's. Lastly I also passed onto MG that I thought that certain parts of the festival should not be subsidised by party ticket $'s. I know the Parade needs the $'s and Fair day but not any of the money losing events whether they be films/plays/shows/arts etc. They should stand on their own and if not profitable then bye bye. Yes this will cause people to complain that the funding is necessary but most would never set foot into the MG Party unless it was a free ticket just as some party goers are not interested in parts of the festival. Was never fussed on overseas DJ's but after Rachel Auburn, I'll vote for her again..........
So please consider........................ - Fri 15 Mar 2002 11:39:50
Sounds like the Liberal Party want to run Mardi Gras ....

G'day All, thought I'd do a quick reply before dashing off to work. WD, Thank You for your points raised. As much as I agree to an extent with your content, the fact is that Pinkboard is not an official MG resource. No insult intended here, but I'd be mad to use this as an 'Official' resource as we just have to look at the number of very biased postings we read on this page from people with no names and from those with agendas. My point is that if anyone has got something to say, do say it to the relevent bodies in addition to Pinkboard, just as 'So please consider' has done. The reality is however, that an official comment does not necessarily equate a reaction. So we're back to Square One, but at least the constructive comments have been channelled correctly. I for one am not associated with MG but I thought this year's party was GOOD! I must honestly say that I did intentionally miss the shows though ;) And at the end of it all, it's really a matter of being adult enough to realise what's on offer and if it ain't up to your fancy, then exercise your choice to decide whether you want to go or not.Yes, Pinkboard is a good medium for us to use but bear in mind that it is not the Official Page Of Gripes and Praises. This is solely my opinion and I'm just trying to share what's beyond the square.

Just sitting around wasting some time and have back tracked through some of the posts since the party. The more I read some of the posts about the mens sex space the more I getting angry. For months and months there has been a conserted campaign for Mardi Gras to have a mens sex space. Mardi Gras have finally delivered on this issue and all I seem to read on this board after the party was all these immature childish hissy fits about how embarrassing it was being where it was in the Hordern Pavilion. Embarrassing for who ?? The users of the sex space or the people who couldnt handle having this space in the midst of their judgemental eyesight ?? Honest to God, make up your minds little bois and girls.
Personally, I cant see what the issue is in regards to the positioning of this space. Either you want the sex spce (and will use) or you are not (and wont use it). To the people who are into it I cant see any complaints, and to the people who arent into it then all I have to say is "why are you complaining". Just because the Hordern had a tiny area of space allocated to other activities ??? Hello !! I dont recall ANY Dance floor being taken up and the argument about the bleaches is not valid cause the old 80's style bleaches in the Hordern will never be reinstated - ever !
The people who use the sex spaces werent complaining , but it seems to me the people who were complaining were the ones not interested in utilising this facility which is just being selfish in my opinion. It just seems the people who dont want to use it also dont want to see it either, its all just a little bit too precious and prudish in my opinion.
