This Fair day can the Miss Fair Day contest be a tad shorter. About an hour shorter would be great as the heat was so bad for ones pale regional skin.
Regional Queen - Tue 15 Jan 2002 20:34:17
Does anyone know what this Mardi Gras theme would be - i need to know !!! I need to get that Pfaff into action A.S.A.P - anyone ????
****Singer***** - Tue 15 Jan 2002 22:32:19
A suggestion to Mardi Gras....pleassssse bring back Shelly Silberman as the host of the pageant this year...and leave your Lance Leopardskin at home!
Dancing Queen - Tue 15 Jan 2002 22:43:50

Yay finally a wall for us on Pinkboard - T H A N K S Panther - I've been waiting ages!
I can't believe its nearly Mardi Gras Festival time again - Hope the opening is going to be better than last year.
MsGuided - Wed 16 Jan 2002 00:34:08
Same old complaints, same old faces, same old drugs, same old party, same old pavillions, same old lighting effects, same old show times, same old performers, same old straight crowd, but most of all same old wingers that never do anything to make the MG party the best night for the gay and lesbian crowd.
same old, same old - Wed 16 Jan 2002 14:16:18
Yeee Haaa - finally a board. Happy Mardi Gras all....the DJ line up looks fantastic, something for everyone but the usual whingers will moan I suppose because "their" Hall isn't what they want. Just move to another. So who will be the surprise stars ? some homegrown ones I presume with the current climate. They usually are better than the International stars anyways.....Please arrange for Fair Day to be on a warm but cloudy day...it was too hot for the real dogs last year. You out there Laserium ?
P - Wed 16 Jan 2002 15:55:08
Hi all, i'm so looking forward to this years Mardi Gras. i was in last years Mardi Gras for the first time, and what a blast. i'll be back again this yearh. Panther, thank you so much for pinkboard. luv Dj Rain HAPPY MARDI GRAS

furryfun69 - Wed 16 Jan 2002 19:17:33
Go the Hordern!!!!!! Hard house heaven alright!
Nat - Wed 16 Jan 2002 19:01:41
YAY !! The walls are back -- Im looking forward to MG yet again (ive lost count how many ive been to). Not very happy with the DJ line up and disappointed that Paul Goodyear is playing the closing set in the RHI cause word has it that he is going to be similar to what he plays at Arq on Saturdays which in my opinion is too dark for a closing RHI Mardi Gras set. Hopefully he will proove me wrong and play camp and commercial like he used to 4-5 years ago. Well folks there are 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go ! 45 days to go !
Countdown Boy !!! - Wed 16 Jan 2002 19:33:43
I tried to get tickets to Peterra Anggarek and it was all booked out. It must be a great show. Anyone have spare tickets?
Baroque - Thu 17 Jan 2002 13:50:43
Dear Same old - stay at home. Dear Countdown Boy - don't assume. Dear Nat - I'm with you , can't wait for Peter McNamara.......in the Hordern.

Can't wait to see the Norfolk Island float
- Thu 17 Jan 2002 15:42:31
Are there already people queuing at City Live for Harbour Party tix ??
- Thu 17 Jan 2002 16:46:53
Can someone please let me know the exact lineup of DJ's. The Mardi Gras website is as helpful as ever.
IG - Thu 17 Jan 2002 16:38:35
Will Jake Kilby be DJing? What's happening in City Live? Will Mazz have her photo tent like at Sleaze?
Take the shackles off my feet so I can dance... - Thu 17 Jan 2002 16:46:16
For all those people planning on camping out to get Harbour Party tickets, apparently Fox Studios will be locked until 7 am on Saturday morning to prevent any disturbance for local residents. So at least we can safely sleep until 6 am without worrying about any queue.

Does anyone have any advice as to what is a good time to line up for Harbour Party tickets coz i didnt line up last year?!?!?!!
Jacob - Fri 18 Jan 2002 00:07:51
Well there's something for everybody in that line up. Well done. Neil Lewis should be sensational if he's as good as he was at Magnitude &Beyond, but I think I'll be in the Dome all night for something darker. I'm not sure about the "Made 4Summer with Delicious Vocals" description though -not how I'd describe either Mandy Rollins or Sveta - but this is a nice line up all the same.
lovin' it (and I really mean it this time) - Fri 18 Jan 2002 00:21:05
marcia's cover of "a god that can dance" on her recent "diva" cd has mardi gras written all over it.The dance tracks off tina's "just me" cd deserve to be the summer dance floor hits. "dare you to be happy" is as gorgeously funky as "soul mate #9" and "symphony of life" is just sublime. So my wish list for mardi gras shows are marcia hines at 4am with "believe - a god that can dance" medley and tina arena for closing with "symphony of life".
bette eachway - Fri 18 Jan 2002 00:49:09
Queens, always complaining......wheres that Krishnan Rajah these days. Probally on another Geographical in Australia or Malaysia. May be he's marching with the big boys at this years Mardi Gras...............keep chasing Krishnan!
- Fri 18 Jan 2002 10:38:10
bette eachway - you may get your wish re Tina, but word has it that MG has secured an international that is BIG (well bigger than thier usual line up of has beens)
- Fri 18 Jan 2002 11:54:41
I have absolutly no inside information what so ever but i reckon it will be Pink. She was suppposed to play one of the past parties but had to pull out and she has had 2 big hits since which are both suitable for mardi gras.
BND - Fri 18 Jan 2002 21:50:56
Hooray! Pinkboard's MG graffiti wall is always the start of my MG festival! More goss than a grrl can bear! I'll miss OUTFM this year though.
(not so) Rational - Sat 19 Jan 2002 02:33:49
I am a bit cautious about Mardi Gras getting another american d.j playing the middle set in the r.h.i after the unforgivable barry harris set at Sleaze...can anyone shed any light on this guy's music style... the mardi gras official blurb on him does not really give much away, apart from that its great to see the board back up and looking forward to sean and jake in the r.h.i as well as the hard house in the hordern....great stuff!!
Nick - Sat 19 Jan 2002 03:28:50
6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !! 6 weeks to go !!
Counting Down Boy ! :) - Sat 19 Jan 2002 23:22:09
The American DJ (Neil Lewis) is another dodgy choice of American DJ's who arent in touch with the Sydney music scene (in my opinion). His style is not suited to the RHI which is supposed to be camp and handbaggy. He is more tribal American House and is similar to what Paul Goodyear plays. This means that the last 6 hours in the RHI from 4am to 10am will be a completely foreign sound for the RHI which is so wrong in my opinion. Why cant MG committee stop tampering with the traditional sounds of the RHI and leave that hall to its handbag origins ?? In the last 3 years every hall at MG or Sleaze has had its traditional sounds manipulated and tampered with and not to the better in my humble opinion. Last sleaze in city live was a resounding success with camp music being played and now from what i am told MG have done a flip flop and are about to announce house DJ's for city live ... one of which will be Alex Taylor. Never before has the old saying "If its not broken dont fix it" ever been so appropriate.
a worried punter - Sat 19 Jan 2002 23:31:54
Doesn't the party usually have a name? And, since someone always asks, any same sex spaces this year (ya know what I mean!)?
Paul Diamondo - Sun 20 Jan 2002 13:02:40
Oh well, save money and brain cells - stay home and listen to your WILD FM collection. Happy Mardi Gras. ;-)
EC - Sun 20 Jan 2002 16:40:29
Since nobody else has bothered to clear this up I might as well-to the couple of people who've asked, the mardi gras party DOESN'T have a theme the way sleaze ball does, so those agonizing over costume choices should feel free to wear whatever they like, as most partygoers do.
- Sun 20 Jan 2002 20:00:17
Anyone have any thoughts on a recovery holiday? I saw that Travel.com is promoting an Alice Springs recovery... but what would the other options be?
maddabunny - Mon 21 Jan 2002 02:39:21
now, you Dome Kids better make sure you play some dark & moody music for me & if Sveta or Scott dont play any Green Velvet tracks then I'll be most upset. I'm crossing my fingers for a Bad Dog recovery too
the Stalker - Mon 21 Jan 2002 05:33:11
Does anyone know who the DJs are for both Harbour Parties?
- Mon 21 Jan 2002 13:04:13
Can't wait can't wait... maybe adelaide will get it's butt together to get a float in there this year... YAH!
Adelaidian gras lover - Mon 21 Jan 2002 13:32:08
Hoorah for the Hordern! At last, hard house in an arena that will cope well with that sort of sound!!! And for those into different music, your halls look good, too. This will be my first MG party for 7 years, mainly because of the tired music sound at recent parties ... SG&LMG, you've finally won me back! Now let's hope this truly is a gay and lesbian celebration ... we can do it!
Teiwaz - Mon 21 Jan 2002 14:52:10
Teiwaz, if you were paying attention the Hordern was used at Sleaze for Hard House. It didn't quiet work as the DJ's didn't really get there and the crowd never was.
- Mon 21 Jan 2002 18:04:24
ist here any indication of what shows are on in what halls and when went last year an appeared to miss most ....but a wonderfull time was had anyhow...hapy mardi gras you gogeous people
mateous - Mon 21 Jan 2002 18:46:44
I completely disagree with the posting from Mon 21 Jan. For me, the Hordern completely rocked at Sleaze and from memory, there were plenty of postings on the pinkboard to support this.
- Mon 21 Jan 2002 19:48:45
Panther: I implore you to attach a Spellchecking device for this graffiti wall. psssst .... frankie knuckles is playing at Harbour Party. keep it quiet
Mr Panties - Mon 21 Jan 2002 19:55:26
Is anyone at all interested in the Festival? or is it all just party people here?
Perhaps another wall were the music ain't so loud. - Mon 21 Jan 2002 19:56:45
Frankie Knuckles Saturday, Wayne G Sunday. And this press release from BMG: Superstar artist P!NK is set to showcase her new album M!SSUNDAZTOOD in Australia, confirming a promotional tour of Melbourne and Sydney from February 10th to February 17th ....
Not saying - Mon 21 Jan 2002 22:01:16
I have to defend Neil Lewis - he was sensational in Melb and played an incredibly high energy trance set with minimal tribal house. The only drums I heard were Love Tattoo. He was nothing like Barry Harris. There was enough vocals to break it up too. Listen to his Magnitude CDs - they sum up the style well. He does know how to play a crowd. Anyway, that's my two cents worth, I'm with the Stalker - I'll be in the Dome for more Green Velvet.
lovin' it - Tue 22 Jan 2002 00:22:46
Dear "Perhaps another wall", the writers in this space have never attached the slightest importance to the Festival. Your question is therefore unique.
PaulDiamondo - Tue 22 Jan 2002 02:48:40
Frankie Knuckles is playing the full length of the saturday Night Harbout party and the second night it's Rob Davis and Wayne G.
Nick - Tue 22 Jan 2002 03:29:54
Pinkboard welcomes comment about the festival. In the past it has been as PaulDiamondo says, but there is no reason for it to remain that way. Lots people do attend events other than the Party such as the Parade, Fair Day, the Launch, galleries, theatre, film and community events. Please, if you liked something, tell others about it.
Panther - Tue 22 Jan 2002 09:21:08
I must congratulate the guys who organised the Harbour Party tickets! Well done guys! Hey does anyone know when it sold out? See you there!
Mitzy K - Tue 22 Jan 2002 10:57:16
The funny thing is,Harbour Party hasnt even sold out!!!! hahahahahaha
Lindy Chamberlain - Tue 22 Jan 2002 14:56:41
The assumption that US DJs can't play to an Aussie crowd is a bit wrong-headed. Tracy Young played Perth last weekend and it was obvious she'd done her homework and didn't just play what she would have played to a US club crowd. Some of it might have been a bit tribal for an RHI crowd though. I didn't hear Steps or Britney ... :-P
Not saying - Tue 22 Jan 2002 15:37:52
Dear Festival fan - make a comment, make a suggestion and I'm sure someone will join in the discussion, just dont knock the rest of us party lovers for getting into it or don't you like being first ? Re comments on 21 Jan re Hordern at Sleaze - first half especially Peter McNamara was 10/10 fantastic. Found second half just a bit too hard/fast but didn't complain as plenty of others in there enjoying it and there were other Halls to visit.
Yours truly - Tue 22 Jan 2002 16:25:46
Is anyone going along to the Launch of the Festival this year? who do we think will be the surprise guest speaker? I've heard some reliable rumors but I'm not telling for I've been sworn to secrecy.
Squeak - Tue 22 Jan 2002 16:55:36
Madonna and Cher are going to do a duet at Mardi Gras in the Dome at 5am !
I know :) - Tue 22 Jan 2002 19:07:31
I heard Neil Lewis play at Beyond in Melbourne in September 01 and he was awesome he is sure to be a huge success at Mardi gras...Hey Lovin It what did you wear to Beyond that night?
Masc Leather Melb - Tue 22 Jan 2002 19:12:28
Lovin It was wearing red corduroy hotpants, white leg warmers & Dunlop KT26's. he thought he was at the Paradise Garage. I'll be borrowing that outfit for mardi gras. is Neil Lewis well hung ?
Mr Panties - Wed 23 Jan 2002 02:48:26
Hey guys! I am new to town from LA. Is Harbour Party sold out? Where can I get tickets if they are available and if not is there somewhere I can look for them. Ebay?
Tommy - Wed 23 Jan 2002 11:37:45
Dear "Perhaps another wall" ... about the only thing worth talking about this year's Festival is that there isn't anything worth talking about! For the first time ever I will not attend ANY festival event, and am still wondering if it is worth watching the parade and attending the party (ps. I am not over 40 either, so am no where near OLD!) .... :^D
bitter & twisted - Wed 23 Jan 2002 11:39:59
Paradise Garage - Mr Panties that is dating you ( I went to them as well ) that outfit sounds wow (not) but I'm sure we posters will have no trouble finding you. Oh and Neil is hung like a donkey but only into chicken....... ( only teasing luv ) *** Squeak - please squeal - who do you think will be the surprise speaker ? I only go now if looks like something extra special. The NZ speaker they had a few years back ( the transexual ) was great. Otherwise just ends up being the same old .........
Yours truly - Wed 23 Jan 2002 11:53:48
the Paradise Garage that he would have been reffering to was the one in NYC in the early 80's. not the sydney parties in the early 90's that stole the name. fyi - aiden shaw (pom porn star) is doing something at the launch
Chiclet (checkin the facts) - Wed 23 Jan 2002 13:16:11
Well, HAPPY MARDI GRAS Everyone!!! (I love saying that) I will be marching in the P FLAG float this year, with my Dad and Step-Mum, and I really can't wait. As for the party, well, since my parents will be here I think it will be a tad difficult to get to it, but I don't mind really. But, you never know. Have a blast, everyone. And remember, don't be to responsible, unless it involves someone else.
Doodle - Wed 23 Jan 2002 14:44:57
well, here's someone who's also 'under 40' (make that 'under 30') and can't wait for the festival OR the party. i don't think 'perhaps another wall' was suggesting that the two don't mix! my personal picks: margaret cho (can't wait), pool party (woopee!), the Fur Ball (yes, i'm a girl), fair day (who wouldn't?), drumdrag (what a concept), and of course, the incredible, got-to-be-there, something-for-everyone, mardigras film festival. and to top it all off, the party to end all parties... what a city, what a month!
over-excited - Wed 23 Jan 2002 16:08:07
What is Aiden doing at the launch? Flopping it out? Now that would be a change from any same old same old ... Mr Panties if you change your mind about wearing those red corduroy hotpants, I'm first in line.
EC - Wed 23 Jan 2002 18:55:21
OINK VEY Ok I might get in trouble for that one, but coming in on Valentines day ALONE the rest of the party arrives 2 weeks later. So I am wishing for a specail someone to show me the real sydney. Also looking forward to the F*ck Fashion Party.
OinkVey - Wed 23 Jan 2002 19:03:04
2 days till the Film festival guide is released. I can't wait for that. Last years film fest was great. The only problem was narrowing down the selection as there was so much to choose from. I'm sure this year will be just as good. As for the rest of the festival, yes there's not as much as in previous years but I've already booked tickets to 4 events. Then of course there's Fair Day and the launch. You can even see the Gay and Lesbian Choir for free in The Queen Victoria Building.

Tickets for the Sunday Harbour party have sold out, tickets are available here on Pinkboard (via classifieds), tickts for the Saturday night party are available from the Tool Shed. Good luck and see you all there!!
Ozfritz - Sat 26 Jan 2002 10:51:22
I suppose that the year the Mardi Gras theme is "clothes optional" will be the same year as the "year of the older ugly person" As you can guess I am a little psychic and dont waste my talents with crystal balls..... Some new attractions which should attract government funding include: -nipple painting -bear shaving -twink dusting -drag racing -condom fitting [and not by geriatric members of the order of the sisters of the never indulged - please] ..... and what happened to the Virgins Excuseme dance at the MG Balls we had a few years ago???
trucker-bear - Sat 26 Jan 2002 17:22:33
HAPPY MARDI GRAS!!!!!! I look forward to seeing everyone again this year. Remember to hug all your friendly Party Marshals.
Ageing Marshal - Sat 26 Jan 2002 19:25:10
My first posting here... Love the party, love the music just can't wait for it all again. I've been doing the party for 10 years (or more!) seen some changes but heck...! it's still the best godamned party with the best godamned music in the Horden and the best godamned men in the Dome but where did all the sex go...? bring back a few dark spaces so we can screw around as well as dance our tits off. Seriously though, with the chemistry just right (as it always is) sex is going to happen... don't anyone dare say it doesn't or that's not what the party is about because you will be wrong...! heck MG even provide the necessities for SS but simply nowhere to "get it on" Well... we know where they all go to do it, which aint the nicest place to fall "IN" and "Out" of love half a dozen times in the 12 hours. Besides they hold up the queues. Anyone agree...?
pxane - Sat 26 Jan 2002 21:35:01
It is rumored Madonna will perform her new single "Lovers" at the Mardi Gras party from her forthcoming album "Living For Love(Guy)".
Frozenrain - Sat 26 Jan 2002 23:08:03
Happy Mardi Gras indeed ! it's great that we're getting support from celebrities such as yourself. I loved you in Laverne & Shirley & think you're a gifted film director. god bless you Penny Marshal !
Chiclet (in a league of my own) - Sun 27 Jan 2002 00:52:34
Funny thing happened to me on Thursday when I went into Ticketek on Thursday. I originally went in to buy my Souths V Dragons charity match tickets - which were completely sold out!!! and thought I might try my luck with getting pool party tickets but i thought they'd be sold out too. I actually managed to get some! Imagine my surprise when a 40,000 capacity footy match was sold out in 3days flat and a 400 capacity MG party still had tickets available. Needless to say I'd gladly swap my pool tickets for the footy ones.
JT - jt9474@ihug.com.au - Sun 27 Jan 2002 16:38:43
Couldn't agree more with pxane. The result of the new strategy is that sexual activity moves to the dance floor. That's fine by me - you can at least see what you're doing - but not everyone is comfortable with it (so they just move somehwere else).
PaulDiamondo - Sun 27 Jan 2002 21:12:16
The Film Festival guide has hit the streets and it looks good. Nice mix of material. Myself, I can't wait for the lesbian vampire flick 'Daughters of Darkness'.
Pilot - Mon 28 Jan 2002 00:11:11
Dear "Masc Leather Melb" - what a silly question. I was wearing my chaps & harness - try & pick that from the other 300 or so. You'll see me in the same outfit in the Dome at MG - depending on the weather - if hot, it could be a night for latex (it scored for me last night at Red Raw) Also Mr Panties my mother always steered us clear of trends - she would never buy me leg warmers unless you could find them at Target, but you've made me get out my Larry Levan records now. And now that I seem to be the defender of American DJ's - Tracey Young was very tasty in Melb last night too. Played the same style of set that Ben Drayton's been playing. After hearing Paul Goodyear's set last night, Neil Lewis is kind of like that but with more energy.
Lovin' it - Mon 28 Jan 2002 00:35:03
PS - nothing at all wrong with sex on the dance floor. Especially if you can distract the DJ's in the Dome.
lovin' it - Mon 28 Jan 2002 00:37:08
Hey Lovin It,Keen to find out who you are, will be laying low until the next Beyond in May,give me more details about yourself
Masc Leather Melb - Mon 28 Jan 2002 20:36:08
Bette, Madonna, Cher, what no PSB, Kylie, Danni? Let's face it dears, these rumours are spread every year to try to boost the flagging sales. In reality we'll see Bardot, Sarah Marie & Johnny doing a duet and either INXS, Barnsey or some other aussie tragic has-been trying to prop up thier fading career with the gay market. The shows are overrated and have been for many years but the DJ's are always awesome.
Not falling for the hype..... - Mon 28 Jan 2002 21:56:10
Dear "Masc Leather Melb" -yeah right - you can only find me if you find me on the dancefloor or in a dark corner, certainly not on a graffiti wall. You know how it goes "you may be down, no one around, but i'll be there just a face in the crowd etc" I'm not keeping low - there's far too much mayhem to be spread before May. Don't think I know if you're not going to be at either Mardi Gras or Inquisition (the holy duopoly). But you could be fun.
Lovin' it. Feeling good, feeling better! - Mon 28 Jan 2002 22:26:33
Ok ok, Mardi Gras shows: 1st show: Bardot ( I Need somebody) 2nd show: Human Nature 3rd show: Deborah Cox: 2 songs, noby's supposed to be here a& Absolutely Not! $th and closing show: Olivia Newton John: Xanadu.
HARD28 - Tue 29 Jan 2002 11:02:10
Does anybody else share my dissapointment with the content of this years festival, and what appears to be a complete lack of artistic flair in the design and appearance of this years poster/guide etc. "Happy Mardi Gras" indeed, have we won all the battles worth fighting that this is the best slogan we can come up with?
Mycle - Tue 29 Jan 2002 13:56:13
Dear Mycle I do share your dissapointment. The poster itself reflects a definite lack of artistic flair - all I see are rehashed photo's! However, to be constructive, I believe that MG needs to re-think its entire program. I empathise that it is a very tough for them financially, especially given the difficulties over the past 2 years with selling events. Flicking through the guide, I felt that some of the events have 'had their day' so to speak and perhaps an assessment of what is now relevant and necessary to the queer community is needed. Any body else care to comment?
Concerned - Tue 29 Jan 2002 16:15:08
The poster is terrible (although the photographers are great) but then the posters have been pretty poor for a long time - ever since they opted for the 'corporate' look. The best thing they've done in years was the Homosutra Sleaze poster. As for the guide, well it's dull but easy to read. Get this party started.
EC - Tue 29 Jan 2002 16:23:20
what !? is that the poster ? I thought I was looking at a copy of Lesbians On The Loose circa 1982.
Chiclet (in full colour) - Tue 29 Jan 2002 20:06:44
Whats the Mardi Gras CD like, im yet to get it? I loved last years it was really funky and have been playing it all year at work for background music. Looking foward to the next month, have a look at pic 5 at www.gaydar.com.au/boynxdor (and i still gota ad a frisky ticket).
BND - Tue 29 Jan 2002 22:12:23
hey Lovin It thanks for the reply no Inquisition this year for this leather clad dude other priorities to deal with will be thinking of you as you spread your leather wave in the Dome at Mardi Gras.Who knows a little dance floor action with you at the next Beyond may be fun ?
Masc Leather Melb - Tue 29 Jan 2002 22:07:14
re: the festival guide - whilst I don't particularly like the poster or the theme of the festival - at least for once the guide is completely readable. other years I've had to strain my eyes to decipher the words through the background noise of the page. This time no such problem everything is completely readable. And despite the lack of any real high profile events there are a few gems in the guide - you just have to search for them. And for one thing we should be applauding Mardi Gras for having the guts to put on and under 18s dance party. They know that if that gets out to the mainstream media the bigots and daily telegraph readers will be having a field day and MG will cop alot of flack but they still went ahead with it because something like that is sorely needed. Go on you MG - I may not agree with everything they do but with this one thing I am (like many other people) 100% behind them.
WD - Tue 29 Jan 2002 23:35:21
Lovin It and Masc Leather Melb you are destined to meet. Suggest back left emtrance of RHI at 3.30am. You guys gotta do it.
PaulDiamondo - Wed 30 Jan 2002 00:15:49
Agree WD. Wonder if Mycle/EC/Concerned ever front up to MG meetings or ring/call/email them with their ideas ? Every year the knockers come out about this is wrong or thats missing. Wake up call boys/girls - MG is trying to cover the entire gay scene so of course there will be things you dont agree with but just consider there are others who love that particular idea. Like any organisation, they will try new ideas that may or may not work but give them a go and support them. These walls got closed because of comments like these infuriating other posters and ended up with a vile slinging match between them.
A Supporter - Wed 30 Jan 2002 09:54:38
WD, I too applaud MG's initaitive in hosting an under 18's event, but a party does not a festival make. The age of consent issue should be of concern to us all, and it's Mardi Gras's failure to tackle these issues in a very public way that is a concern. I for one hope "the mainstream media the bigots and daily telegraph readers" do have a field day, at least then the issues surrounding inequality in NSW will start to get the attention it deserves.
Mycle - Wed 30 Jan 2002 13:54:05
A Supporter, I have been a member of MG since 1996, attended all the AGM's, cast my vote, had my say, and will continue to have my say in any and every forum that allows me to do so. My continued support fo the principles of the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras is based on it's continued effective contribution to a vibrant Gay & Lesbian community here in Sydney not on blind mindless support. I thank Pinkbord for providing this forum and hope it continues to encourage constructive debate
Mycle - Wed 30 Jan 2002 14:04:31
Actually, I'm not a 'knocker' at all. Having a negative opinion on one aspect of Mardi Gras doesn't translate into running down the organisation altogether. You should also not assume I don't DO anything for Mardi Gras, or the community, on the basis of the fact that I happen to think the posters have been lacking in imagination and flair for some time. Bit of a long bow. Hey BND ya ol' Perth boy you :-)

lovin' it - Thu 31 Jan 2002 00:19:50
each year I wait with glee for the mardigras guide to be released, and each year i happily mark the pages of those events that interest me, and flick past those that don't. each year the festival means something different to me: a celebration of coming out; a celebration of my 'community' of friends; a celebration of falling in love; a celebration of sex. but each year its really all about celebrating the gay and lesbian community in Sydney that helped me to find my sexuality, and to turn it into a fulfilling, diverse life. that's why i love the pared-back "happy mardi gras" theme of this year's festival, especially for its revisiting of a 'history' (and hidden present, ie. surburbia, queer families etc) that's most often shelved in favour of a corporatised, glamour-boy, pink-dollar aesthetic. i think this year's guide and posters are really brave and creative, and that's why the disappointment that others seem to inevitably express each year, always makes me slightly depressed. i find it hard to even imagine how those hardworking mardigras staff and volunteers (more like a few staff, and hundreds upon hundreds of volunteers) could meet everyone's expectations? i'm all for constructive criticism, so i'd love to see some really concrete suggestions about how to improve the 'imagination and flair' of the guide, the themes, the events, and so on. cuz i for one, am planning to spend all my energy on enjoying what we've got!

HARD28 - Thu 31 Jan 2002 13:03:28
my problem with this years festival is this, I too "happpily mark the pages" but this year I'm not seeing too many marked. Am I alone in this? As for the poster and the "Happy Mardi Gras" theme, you may see it as "pared back" but I see it as a cop out (and I don't think I'm alone). We've all heard this one before - for god sake lets at least bring back the community competition for the poster design, it's a start!

ooch ay the noo - Fri 1 Feb 2002 12:27:42
I think that part of the reason that the festival cops so much flack is because everybody is just waiting in anticipation for the party maybe if the party was held at the beginning of the festival we could get all that stuff over with and then the sensible people could enjoy the festival as it was inteneded.
- Fri 1 Feb 2002 18:59:22
The CD is fantastic - Mandy Rocks. On the poster debate, all we have heard for years is that they are too corporate in appearance. This year, MG give us real people, images that have been captured from MG events, far from corporate looking I would say - yet the complaints still come. I think the posters are fantastic. I have heard that MG is about to release a sheet of peel of stickers, so we can all label ourselves, the same way that each of the people in the posters is labelled. If this is true, it will add so much more to the theme and campaign. Happy Mardi Gras!

Question: What is "a men's bar"?. Answer "a men's space" without balls" (or dicks). Political correctness, the downside of coalitionism and the desperate need to please the straight tourism community and its dollars continue to take the meaning out of Mardi Gras for many gay men. Watch for the security guards cracking down on any men's play like they did at Pride New Party.

lovin' it - Sat 2 Feb 2002 12:40:30
I have to agree with Funboy. MG does not seem to know what the party is actually supposed to be about. On the one hand they say it's a "tribal" event (see the minutes of the EGM) in order to keep out "undesirables" - but then on the other hand they tickets cost 110 bucks!!! Not everyone can afford that and so join in on the "tribal" event. And then they decide to crack down on people being "tribal" and getting "in touch" with their community. Please make up your mind MG or are u just a ditzy fake blonde?

Where don't security guards penetrate? The dance floor! (In contrast to those lovely ladies with giant wheelie bins collecting used water bottles).

countdownboy@hotmail.com - Sun 3 Feb 2002 12:58:05
I don't think $110 is too much to pay for the party when you consider what it pays for - a huge 12 hour party with at least five different venues; a festival; and a parade. And it all turns February into the most wonderful month of the year. Compare the MG party ticket price to NYE. Pride was $90 for just two venues. Other "str8" NYE parties were $130 or more in a nightclub just becase of one name international DJ. Makes MG party loook like bloody good value to me.

HARD28 - Mon 4 Feb 2002 00:54:59
NMP - Sun 3 Feb 2002 13:38:26 - I don't have a problem with the price of the tickets. I have a problem with what MG and it's power elite's claim is the party's significance. If it **IS** a fundraiser or even just a plain old party then they have every right to charge whatever they think people will pay. It's when they attach "tribal" significance to the party to support their political views then I have a big problem with it/them. $110.00 may actually be value for money - but if the party is about "G&L tribalism" then everyone should be able to participate in that tribalism - and you may not think so, but $110.00 is alot of money and puts the party out of reach for alot of us. It's up to those up there in MG to make up their minds and stop coming up with any old line just because it suits their argument at the current point in history.
WD - Mon 4 Feb 2002 00:57:57
So WD if you disagree with the way MG is putting on the party - don't go. They have 20,000 party goers to please and they wont be able to please them all - its reality. What you would like them to do might offend others as not their style. I hope they dont put in the sex space in the Hordern especially if it takes away that set of bleachers but have to accept that some love the sex at parties whereas I can't see how they could possibly get it up but I accept it ! As for the poster - well they go too Corporate and people whinge, they cut back on the corp, and still they whinge. How about a plain white poster with just the dates and you can then paint your own !
Miss - Mon 4 Feb 2002 09:35:45
Happy Mardi Gras is such a lame theme for this year..is the mardi gras really becoming the commercialized that we dont have any issues to march for or have we turned into a circus fiaso that marches down the street for the amusement of families..why is everybody so worried about the partys that will happen and how much they cost and not the issues that we should be marching for..i get told of stories of how exciting it used to be maybe the mg community has become to complence and are quite satisfied for us to be seen as having no real reason to be still marching does anybody else feel the same way Shaquille19
redstarwinterorbit@hotmail.com - Mon 4 Feb 2002 14:18:12
WD, sad thing is that Julie Regan, only under community pressure, shared your view. Her initial opinion was that the party is worth a lot more than $100 per ticket. Despite all the arguments of disenfranchising sections of the community and despite her election campaign being about "community", her sense of community was not present at those discussions on ticket prices.

Brandon Taylor - Tue 5 Feb 2002 09:48:08
Dear "Keep sex at our parties" - see comment by Paul Diamondo. Also its not only amyl that drops your blood pressure. The other "goods" can be just as bad. Would not suggest it and if you do get a prescription from your Doctor, ask them what their opinion is on that scenario. Just dont take out the bleachers in the Hordern ! Would rather they just give you back the tents.

Who said anything about amyl ? YUK !! I think amyl is not in fashion as much as it used to be. I remeber 6-7 years ago everybody used to have it at parties. Now , you rarely see it. redstarwinterorbit@hotmail.com - Tue 5 Feb 2002 15:45:54
No boys, listen to this... Do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT take amyl and Viagra together. It is exceptionally dangerous. The packaging for Viagra has warnings all over it about nitrates ( amyl/poppers etc). It is a very unpleasant expereince, I can assure you, sniffing amyl while being on Viagra. if you want to have sex or dance and have amyl, DON'T have Viagra. WD - I did read your post, but when people start going on about " attaching tribal significance " or saying how MG are trying " to support their political views " , I just switch off. Maybe I am a dumb blonde, but to me its a party, they try different themes/names each year and even IF MG has a political leaning, how the hell could it affect a dance party ? yes a small party can be affected but not on this scale. MG would be dipped in tar and feathered if they did. Maybe a case of "reading" to much into something luvvie ?
Miss - Wed 6 Feb 2002 10:11:13
anyone know what happens to the launch if its rained out? wouldn't it be a blast if the alternative venue was INSIDE the opera house! somehow, i don't think so... also: responding to Mycle - Thu 31 Jan 2002 13:25:42 - i agree that returning to the community poster competition for the festival guide design is a great idea, so long as that will help get people enthused about the arts, music, stage, screen, literary and other events as well! that's enough exclamation marks for me this morning...

An update for Sun 20 Jan reply to the questions being asked re "THEME" for MG. Whilst I applaud you for being the only person to take the time to enlighten all these somewhat confused party goers on the matter, however I think you might be as confused as they are.You said MG dosn't always have a theme (unlike Sleeze) as it's considered to be enough of a theme in itself. Personally I agree, if the words of Mardi Gras don't instantly give you a theme as does Sleeze Ball then perhaps one should not attend! But enough about that lets get back your reply you posted,MG themed up long before Sleeze Ball, and from the first theme attatched it has had one ever since. Sleeze Ball however continued to be just that "a Sleeze Ball" . It was quite a few years later before there was an additional theme added to Sleeze. And like MG from the first added theme Sleeze recieved it's never again gone without one either. Are we all up to speed now with our History. Glad to hear it. Actually if anyone from Mardi Gras are reading this perhaps the suggestion can be made that for the entire festival month they have representation on line correcting the misinformed and shareing some of its History. Just a thought...from one who used to be at every party without fail. But then they use to mean something then too I suppose. (No disrespect intended)

IG - Wed 6 Feb 2002 17:53:27
This years theme is "Happy Mardi Gras" And the parade has its own theme which is " Walk a mile in our shoes". Last year was "Out There Everywhere". 2000 "2000GETHER". 1999 was something about the future, can't remember excactly. 1998 "20 Years Of (R)Evolution. Previous years used imagery rather than words like the fruit on the poster in 1997 and the faces in 1996. It's all more marketing than theme but some people use it for costume ideas. The party usually keeps it's theme a secret till you get there (well almost). I always thought that the theme was "Mardi Gras" every year. The first march was a demonstration and some of the people decided to dress in costume like a Mardi Gras and that is still supposed to be the idea today.

Miss - Wed 6 Feb 2002 10:11:13 - Believe it or not - it's not just a party. A "party" that has no significance is one that i hold when i invite some of my friends around to my place for drinks later tonight. The MG "party" however is constantly used as a tool to oppress certain groups within our community. When a former co-converner of the Rights Lobby (who has power in other organisations as well) gets up in a public meeting and uses the party's "tribalism" as an excuse to keep out "undesirables" from "our" party then it not just a "party" ...too confusing for you? Well that's how they perfer it everyone to be. Just like religious leaders, so too our leaders like to keep the populace in the dark about what's going on so that they can retain their power........but don't worry i"m sure we'll all have fabulous time at the party!!!!!!
WD (did my sarcasm come thru?) - Wed 6 Feb 2002 19:13:30
What happens at the launch and is it worth while going to?
Mikaela...yep, i'm back too!! - Wed 6 Feb 2002 19:17:35
You rock, Mycle. But I can't believe we are getting into this discussion about 'themes' of mardi gras. Personally I would call "Walk a mile in our shoes" "20 years of (r)eveloution" etc slogans rather than 'themes'. I am sure those people who were waiting to hear the 'theme' of mardi gras before making their costumes WERE in fact thinking along the lines of "Homosutra", "Atlantis" etc, which are the kind of themes given to sleaze ball (and again not mardi gras). And incidentally, Sleaze. S-L-E-A-Z-E. Sleaze.
- Wed 6 Feb 2002 19:47:35
Actually Mardi Gras has sometimes had themes which carried through the entire festival, parade and party, for example the 'fruit' theme of 1997. On other occasions the images on the poster have been inspiration for window decorations, floats and cozzies, for example the 1996 (?) one with all the different silhouettes on the poster. Sometimes the party pavilions have been given names linked to the slogan for the festival. On the whole, though, Mardi Gras has had a slogan rather than party themes.

I know there is something wrong when the only Mardi Gras event I look forward to is the AGM.

Now let's sort this out, according to Mardi Gras (and I called them to check) MG is NOT a themed event and has never been! Don't confuse slogan's or soundbites with themes, FRUIT! EC darling, god forbid anyone starts dressing like the poster this year. The Sleaze Ball has been a themed party (a mistake in my opinion) since 1990 "Good & Evil".
Mycle - Thu 7 Feb 2002 13:15:16
Apparently Frankie Knuckles is playing a 6 hour set in City Live, and the launch will happen "rain, hail or shine", both according to the MG thingo on sxnews

CITY LIVE: ALEX TAYLOR & FRANKIE KNUCKLES!!
Love House - Thu 7 Feb 2002 13:43:02
The Daily Terror has begun their annual ritual of slagging MG and us queers. This year they have start the festive season off with a lovely article about how MG is getting it's police user-pays fees for the parade waived by the government. Naturally Charities are up in arms because they have to pay for the police whenever they have a large scale event and that it cuts into their fundraising. ....I guess it's no longer just a fancy dress parade either....
WD - some food for thought - Thu 7 Feb 2002 15:28:21
Mycle you're a tad swishy ... darling. The current johnny-come-lately employees of Mardi Gras can say the event is 'unthemed' all they like. 'Fruit' was not a 'slogan', not a 'soundbite', it was a 'theme'. The theme of the poster, the theme of the guide, the theme of the parade the theme of the party etc. What the employees or the board of 2002 think, say or do about that now has precious little to do with the intent of the board in 1997. This year's Mardi Gras has a 'slogan', albeit not the most original one. Happy Mardi Gras.
EC - Thu 7 Feb 2002 14:41:31
" Used as a tool to oppress certain groups ? " " Just like our Religious leaders ? " " Our leaders like to keep the populace in the dark ? "

Does anybody know if an australian flag has been used for a costume in the Mardi Gras parade? I was thinking of going with an Australian Flag boxers and Australian Flag Cape over my shoulders Shaun19
redstarwinterorbit@hotmail.com - Thu 7 Feb 2002 17:55:30
curious statement EC, I still don't recall the fruit "theme" and I was working for MG in 1997. MG has never promoted an "offical" theme, some may choose to call the design of the Poster/Guide a "theme" amd dress like a cherry, others may allow their creative juices to flow without the constriction that has bound Sleaze Ball for the last 11 years.
Mycle - Thu 7 Feb 2002 18:21:41
Sleaze specifically did not have a theme for 2 or 3 years in the mid 90s. The first of these had an unofficial theme of gold and silver.
arti - Thu 7 Feb 2002 20:49:19
Sleaze Ball bound by constriction? Surely not. Homosutra, for example, was enormous fun. Don't you remember those golden boys and silver girls (or vice versa) and that wonderful show with people in Indian costumes parading around that top of that very tall stage in the middle of the RHI? Not "constricting" surely? (I'm not suggesting that MG should have a theme. It survives perfectly well without one).
PaulDiamondo - Thu 7 Feb 2002 21:22:15
this will be our first mardi gras party..does the party have a sex on site ... cruise area or something like that..jes curious, coz melb parties..winterdaze ..do..
2guys28melb - Fri 8 Feb 2002 00:44:12
2guys28melb - Yes there is , however , it changes from party to party and you tend to spend half your night trying to locate it. Try the Hordern Pavilion 1st, at sleaze ball it was happening behind these strategically placed shipping containers. Word is that theyre doing that again - I hope so --- Now boys & girls and kids I want to say we're into SERIOUS counting mode now as there is only 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !! 22 DAYS TO GO !!
countdownboy@hotmail.com - Fri 8 Feb 2002 10:05:05
WD - it's true that the Daily Terror has began the annual slagging of poofers and dykes but don't knock the charities. The Multiple Sclerosis Society and other charity and community groups like Chinese New Year Parade and St Patricks day have all been working together with Mardi Gras as we are all being negatively affected by potentially huge user-pays bills. The fact that Mardi Gras got an exemption sets a good precedent and the user-pays legislation is being reviewed not because Mardi Gras got an exemption but because it's flawed....
- Fri 8 Feb 2002 10:57:54
yes Paul all very spectacular, but then so is a Madonna show.

Why is it that Alex Taylor and Frankie Knuckles have been selected as the DJ's in City Live ? I cannot believe it !! After the resounding success of having a commercial handbag DJ in the form of Jake Kilby working city Live , SGLMG go and completely do a flip flop and change the music style by putting in 2 DJ's that play garage and house. Is it any wonder we get frustrated and confused with the music policy of SGLMG when they are forever chopping and changing the music styles around. People who dont know DJ names and what style of music they play can just about WASTE half their night trying to find where they fit in best. Yeah , its REALLY FRUSTRATING
Going Round In Circles !! - Fri 8 Feb 2002 14:03:08
dear Shaun19, as far as I know, nobody has worn that outfit to mardi gras as it sounds really awful. if you cant think of anything to wear, go to Sax leather & ask the lovely Sveta to fit you with a cock ring & dog muzzle. you'll lok great I'm sure
Pantes - Fri 8 Feb 2002 15:14:43
just a comment re Paul Goodyear.. the boy simply rocked Red Raw.. most progressive and *percussive* set ive heard in a long long time... cant wait to see hat he does @ mardi gras.. also tracy young was very hard.. maybe too hard for a Melb party... eh, ya get that.. so grab ya poduims girls and dont let go.. feels like its gonna be a good one this year....
calvins or not? - Fri 8 Feb 2002 15:47:40
A warning to the cultured types amongst us-the mardi gras festival guide lists the 'hot bed' playreading series as being $7.50 per play or $20 for all four. I rang ticketek to book and was told the price was $9 each with no discount for attending the whole season. After requesting them to check and get back to me, I got a call back from ticketek to say that they will in fact be charging $9 per ticket (also shown on their website, graffiti wall moderator!), and that the prices advertised in the festival guide are only available by booking through the Seymour Centre direct. Has anyone encountered this with other festival events?
- Fri 8 Feb 2002 16:39:16
No, please, not the Jake Kilby fan club again, didn't we do this to death on the Sleaze wall? Bravo Mardi Gras, I love House and Garage and it's all about ME after all ;-))))
Mycle - Fri 8 Feb 2002 18:07:25
What a pack of nannas! Same old music in all the same places. Mardi Gras keeps chopping and changing the music styles around and we get confused and frustrated. The festival isn't arty enough. The festival is too arty. Poster is too corporate. The posters filled with community faces and moments is too boring. The themes too political. The themes too lame. I'm pleased i'm not putting this gig on. Just chill out and enjoy it. And yeah - Happy Mardi Gras!
Noize-filter - Fri 8 Feb 2002 18:21:50
I have gotta agree with the earlier posting made by “going round in circles”. I just opened up my backlog of email after being away for a few weeks and received an email from Mardi Gras today describing the RHI theme for this years MG party as "Uplifting Heartfelt house & Sexy Vocals". Excuse me for asking but what ever happened to the RHI’s traditional "Camp,Girly & Handbag" sound ? I don’t want to pre judge the event but I truly hope the DJ’s keep the true spirit of the RHI in mind particularly during the hours after sunrise. Every hall at Mardi Gras in recent years has had its traditional sound changed around except for the RHI. Please DJ’s don’t go of in a non commercial direction on the big night , lets leave the RHI to its traditional camp sound. Just about every song played in the RHI should be familiar.I don’t want a music education lesson , I just wanna have fun.

What's in this Mardi Gras...? After today's Fire-ies ticker-tape parade down George Street, BLUE SHIRTS, RED BRACES and BEARS are...! For sure... for sure... Yeah! everyone loves a parade, all those firemen in a parade on the Mardi Gras launch day... how very apt. Now all we gotta do is wait for the next big parade on the 2nd. I'll be with the Bears wearing Blue Shirt and Red Braces... (don't know about the yellow baggies though) woo hoo!
Xane - Fri 8 Feb 2002 20:58:28
As a Bear and and member of Harbour City Bears, I find Mardi Gras being a tad naughty stealing the 6 year old slogan "Bear Essentials" (HCBs own sub cult - sub festival for Mardi Gras)in their little Mardi Gras booklet circulating at the moment. Even though the Mardi Gras' title for the article is "Bare Essentials" I'm unimpressed. But hey...! Other than that little slip up, the book is a great hip pocket reference with an excellent map of the Fox establishment.
Xane - Fri 8 Feb 2002 21:09:26
Shaun19 says... "Sad to see that all you guys can think about is sex" (at the party)... "why not enjoy the natural high of the event" These two things are not mutually exclusive you know Shaun19 and it's definately not a sad activity to have sex at the party. and "no sex drugs"...? Hmmmm, what's that about...? something missing in your education here me thinks. I agree with the "enjoy the natural high of the event" which is a good quote Shaun19, it says it all... lets not get too wrapped up in what other people do or wear to enjoy the party, we get enough intollerance about our ways from the wider hetrosexual community. If you want to do the parade and party in Aussie Flags go for it buddy. Do what ever feels good...! You can even use it as a convenience towel when you find yourself lost in behind the shipping containers.
Xane - Fri 8 Feb 2002 22:23:43
Mr Calvins or NOt - Paul Goodyear did rock - he's come a long way since those aaawful ACE remixes - he actually played many tunes that made me happy at Red Raw. However, most of the last half of the night I was happy regardless of what was played. The fun you can have with latex shorts. Hmmm. Tracey too hard for Melb, I think not? Have to say I'm now more than impressed with DJ line up - there truly is something for everyone. Last year I missed there being something really twisted. I place myself in the hands of Mandy, Scott & Sveta this year. Make me happy. Is this too stream of consciousness? Am I Shirely MacLaine?
