I hope the festival isn't as boring as this wall. btw Does anyone know why the festival has been cut down from 4 weeks to 3? It was difficult enough to not have clashes in things you wanted to see when it was 4 weeks long, now it'll be even worse.

look one of the more interesting things in this years festival for pinkboarders would have to be 'tohave+tohold' (www.magooonsafari.com.au/tohave.html) which give you the chance to email guys off their pics and what they want in a partner... i (*blush*) emailed 3 and got two replies! It is easier than bars or personals and whats more it is easy to access! (but who knows there are 2 cocks so the govt will prob want it pulled down!) oh i didn't declair undieing love for them.. after all the festival is only as boring as you are...

grassroots Looking forward to the Launch tomorrow. It's always been one of the best times to see so many familiar faces from the community. It doesn't have the popularity of the party, so there are less of the friends, friends of friends, friends of friends' friends and people who have very little understanding of what the event is about. It's a much higher concetration of Sydney Queers than at any of the other major MG events.

look Was that not the most boring MG Launch ever!......lets see Fords logo on all the MG promotion Material, rather than just at the MG events.....If they are serious about supporting Gays and Lesbians.....instead of just using the launch as a maketing exercise to target hairdresses for the new poof products. lets see them support us in the wider community....if not then lets not bother having them. Some how i dont hting they will.

Whats up Fair Days butt. Why can't Free Fm have a tent at Fair Day? I didn't realise that Fair Day was a Family event..Does that mean I have to bring my mother this year?
Fairday Fairy - Fri Feb 11 13:23:16 2000
yellow.s Wow! Mardi Gras ought to be congratulated. There's more to life than gym, dance parties and central station playlists sweetie! Try some thing new! Live music, dog shows and oh yeah, and 60,000 punters. Perhaps you could try Blackmarket that afternoon?
Save us from Free Cheese! - Fri Feb 11 13:55:21 2000
I loved the Trade tent at Pride In London, as well as the other pub and club tents. Personally I wish MG would do something like that for Fair Day - in other words, cater to a diversity of tastes and interests (we don't all have dogs and like drag). Re the Arrivals party at Dome, it seems to me to be a bargain at $35. Smokin JO is a London DJ. She presently has a residency at DTPM and many years ago use to play at Trade.
Nat - Fri Feb 11 15:17:44 2000
Sorry, I didn't mean to sound as though I like Free FM. I don't. In fact, I loathe it. I just like the idea of club and pub tents like they have for Pride in London.

look Are we caught in a loop in the time-space continium?
Sat Feb 12 20:44:25 2000
speak It was a rather tired and boring Launch, don't you think? Apart from the off-the-cuff speech by Georgina Beyer's and Julie McCrossin's and Bob Downe's little stand up bits, it was all rather boring and uninspiring. Especially boring was David's speech. What happened?? He gave such a great speech at last year's Launch so we all know he is capable of delivering the goods, that this year's speech was a huge let down. Let's hope the rest of the festival improves, because first the parade lost it's edge and now the has Launch too. We need to lift our game.
Sat Feb 12 20:56:55 2000
I too, was a little disappointed by the Launch on Fri. Last yr's was far superior. As a gay man I felt a little marginised. Why couldn't we have a boy band & male bodybuilder?? Aside from this small niggle, I love the Launch at the Opera House. We don't need to light the Opera House pink; our sheer numbers do that.
Sun Feb 13 12:53:11 2000
celebrate It seems we may have outgrown the Opera House as the venue for the launch... Its a great space to have it, but I think we may have to look for some place where everyone can fit!

look Sun Feb 13 12:53:11 2000 - Now you know how the rest of our diverse community feels. Grow up little boy, you have a heap of things to look forward with the Festival, and yes they are made specifically for Gay men like you.
Sun Feb 13 23:00:20 2000
I thought David's speech was wonderful, it is really special to hear someone in his position speak from the heart rather then spitting out rhetoric that appeases the masses. Congratulations David, many in the community are behind you.
Sun Feb 13 23:05:11 2000
grassroots Just home from the Chinese New Year Party. What a great night! I have not had so much fun in a long time. After all the entertainment the dance floor went off. Congratulations to the organisers. Our president was seen dancing with a group of Asian boys and seemed right at home!!! See you there again next year!
Mon Feb 14 1:35:52 2000
i thought davids speech was political and heartfelt. Some koori friends of mine were moved to tears by the acknowledgement and support of their community by ours Maybe the shows were a little flat but the launch is not about entertainment and georgina was great
smoker - Mon Feb 14 2:55:55 2000
just read the papers and where does free fm get off. They are obviously out of tune with fair day.It at least is one place safe from dance music that seems to be the only option for every other gay event
tell your mother - Mon Feb 14 3:20:52 2000
The Launch - I loved the lighting of the mardi flame, thought the speeches by DM and GB were excellent, especially Georgina's cos she was not afraid to be fabulous, Bob and Julie were great comperes, but somewhere along the line, the launch just lacked some oomph, something a bit more spectacular or unexpected....but I still loved it overall. It would be a shame if we did get too big for the Opera House cos its such a wonderful space..and so visible. The Stars Come Out - apart from the apparently poor stage management with those inexcusable gaps, I liked it. Some excellent performances by a bunch of different performers, I loved Tina C, but I think Gerry C. should stick to being The Queen, rather than A Queen on stage. And Tim Draxl - go grrrrl go!!! Other highlights: Nancy, Philip, Judy, the nude pom pom girls and boys, Paul Capsis, the Portia number, there were others too but I can't remember 'em.
keanu (yep I'm back for another year) - Mon Feb 14 8:16:06 2000
Congratulations to the 50% of people who got harbour party tickets by pushing in. Congratulations to the Tool shed for getting all those booking fees in just a few hours and not having to spend money on security (or did the blond think she was doing something effective?). Congratulations to all the other sad queens in the line who didn't care so long as they got their tickets. Community ...... yeah right.
Mon Feb 14 8:38:22 2000
I think Tim Draxl won a few fans on Saturday night. A future party performance maybe.
Mon Feb 14 10:34:11 2000
sound What does Free FM have to do with our diverse communities? As far as I'm aware it is a commercial dance music radio station pretending to be a Gay and Lesbian community radio station, personally I'm insulted that they believe they have the right to dictate to a community organisation with over 20 years history, especially since all they do is use us for their own cause.
Mon Feb 14 11:13:07 2000
I agree, enough with the dance music!!! Diversity please!
Mon Feb 14 12:53:28 2000
sound Free FM's whinging and arrogant demands to have a dance tent at Fair Day clearly show why they should not get a community radio licence. They are so out of touch with the community. Really when you listen to it (if you can bear more than two minutes) it offers nothing to the GLBT communities it claims to represent. When you see Free at fair day ask them why it is dominated by white gay party boys! Thank god for Out FM at least its diverse like us!!!
Im Out but not Free - Mon Feb 14 14:17:47 2000
look Queing for harbour Party tickets was a bloody disgrace. All those creeps who pushed in, while others waited over 4 hours. And all the mess - pizza, discarded chairs, bottles, newspapers just dumped on Oxford st. Finally thanks Toolshed for great security ie. none except the blonde chick ushering her mates to the front. Is this really a community party?
Ditch the harbour party - Mon Feb 14 14:22:24 2000
I was given a Harbour Party ticket for Valentine's Day. Arrived at my work by courier. I've been given the time and place to rendezvous with the sender.
Lucky me - Mon Feb 14 14:44:11 2000

act here is a quote from Craig Payne free fm boss about fair day from the SSO "They’re telling us that we’re not what Fair Day is about, but what I can’t get is what Fair Day is about". This guy really is in touch with the community isn't he - just like Free - not!

sound Where were the boys on stage at the MG launch?? The speeches were great (David is so hot!! and he has a brain!!! what a man!!) Georgina was fantastic - once everyone got over the initial shock of such a broad NZ accent. Bob and Julie - great - but where were the male performers? where was a big number with the great drag talent we have? Overall a good night - but a bit boring in the 'show' sense
Maxy - Mon Feb 14 17:43:50 2000
sound FreeFM - have you been to Fair Day?????????? Who wants a dance tent at this great community event? There are about a trillion other opportunities for gay boys, gay girls and trans boys/girls and every other person to have a little dance throughout the festival (let alone every other day of the year) Stop treating Fair Day like a great marketing opportunity (Goodness knows you need it tho - your station often borders on the tragic)and let the community (that you think you speak for) have a great day in the sun with family and friends
Maxy - Mon Feb 14 17:47:43 2000
sound The Stars Come Out - overall a fairly enjoyable night I suppose. A few more big production numbers needed as some of the items were a little self-indulgent. What the F*%# were the stage crew and stage manager doing?? the huge gaps got the silly little titters that they deserved. when people pay $65 for a ticket they dont expect to see an amateur concert. i liked most of the items - the 'one voice' thing was a tradegy and i actually felt embarrased for the people doing it - where was the quality control? the nude pom poms were fun - especially when they had a little slip occasionally (Ok ok i am a voyeur at heart!!)Phillip Quast was great as was Nancye, Shauna, Mitchell & Jason, Paul Capsis. The lifesavers number was great , despite the table incident (mind you I think if I were fortunate to be under Mark Hodge I would crumble as well!!!), the Olymics thing was good. Tim Draxl - a very polished performance - when is he actually going to say he is a poof - or was that his way of letting us know????? A bit of tidy up work needs to be done if the Stars Come Out is going to retain that star-like sparkle it has had in previous years
Maxy - Mon Feb 14 17:57:08 2000
celebrate The Chinese New Year Party was again the highlight of my festival (and it has only just begun). It will be hard to top.
Mon Feb 14 20:32:59 2000
grassroots I agree, the Chinese Party was fantastic. Such a great community event, so relaxed and friendly and best of all there was no bitchy attitude present. Even though I barely knew anyone there everyone was friendly with a warm open smile on their face. Not something you see too often anymore.

speak Book Launch for Multicultural Quuer: Australian Narratives

5.30 pm Tuesday 22 February 2000
The Newtown Hotel upstairs bar

A new book describing the lives of non-Anglo gay men and lesbians in Australia will be launched on 22 February 2000 during this year’s Sydney’s Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. With contributions from 16 authors, Multicultural Queer: Australian Narratives is the first book to provide detailed accounts of the complex intersections of ethnicity, culture, gender and homosexuality in this country. The book includes both personal narratives and academic analyses and shows how Australian lesbians and gay men from ethnic minorities negotiate their sexuality amidst often competing pressures from their cultures of origin and the gay and lesbian communities. Issues relating to family and community life, racism, desire, and diversity within the lesbian and gay communities are discussed.
Tue Feb 15 9:05:58 2000

Well, after that launch I think I'll be letting my party ticket go to someone else. It was totally (almost)boring. two highlights only...Bob and Julie...and Georgina!!!!!!!As for the Pres speech *yawn* and I'm sorry girls but the girl bands were not quite right for a festive launch. I also notaced that 'we' were afraid to let the public know it was MG launch!!! Not one Major G&L sign and no flags. surely we could have had a few flapping round the place? For those of you who enjoyed it. I hope you enjoy the rest of MG. Also I wont be sitting there waiting for 4 hours agin next year for a 60 minute performance!
not bitching...just disappointed. - Tue Feb 15 12:05:02 2000
The Melissa Etheridge concert got cancelled!!! I was so looking forward to that, it was going to be the highlight of my festival. Had second row tickets too. What a bummer.
Tue Feb 15 12:12:30 2000
Go to The Concert instead next Saturday in Centennial Park. It's cheaper too!
Tue Feb 15 13:51:27 2000
You know what I liked about the Launch - no drag queens! So one year the girls get some profile and the you boys feel like your dicks been cut off. This boy was happy to hear some fine female voices and check out the lads in the crowd.
cocksucker - Tue Feb 15 13:55:07 2000
There were three drag queens (out of four people) featured in the Daily Terror's article on the launch. Nice to see they still like to stereotype our community (as well as most other minorities).
Tue Feb 15 14:46:45 2000
sound I was under the impression that the Centennial Park concert was for the dykes and that my prescence there as a gay man would have been insensistive. Besides Melissa absolutely rocks and she is so much more amazing when you hear her play live.
Tue Feb 15 14:49:25 2000
The Launch was also featured in the NorthWest Tassie paper, "The Advocate". Sounds like they used the same photo as the one in the Daily Terror. I suppose a little bit of coverage is better than deathly silence, although it would have been excellent to see 3 men dressed in business suits, or 3 women in standard office wear, to reduce the gap of homophobia & acceptance.
Tue Feb 15 16:55:11 2000
sound The concert is for everyone, not just dykes, and you know what, they would be happy to see some gay men there....really!
Tue Feb 15 18:51:07 2000
look Why do you wish that we need to be represented by 3 men/women dressed in business suits. We should be accepted on our terms not theirs. Sure there were better looks to be shown than Drag Queens, but why choose the "hey we look like you, please accept us" line.
cumrat - Wed Feb 16 2:45:02 2000
grassroots there's the old saying, "be the sun not the wind", ie. go with the flow, emphasise your similarities instead of digging your heels in and saying "i won't change!" because that'll never win you any friends.
Wed Feb 16 7:03:38 2000
Pip and the Mermaid Among the eels, there is now a mermaid made of cement looking at herself in a pond at the Royal Botanic Gardens.

"She is looking at her own reflection, and within her own reflection she can see other people. When you look into other people's eyes you actually see yourself reflected," said Sydney artist Philippa Playford, who installed her yesterday. "It's a bit narcissistic really."

The three-metre work, She loves me, she loves me not, is made of cement, polystyrene and shells and forms part of the Queer Reflections exhibition, for which various works will be set up across Sydney during the 2000 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival.
From Sydney Morning Herald, 14th Feb 2000 - Wed Feb 16 9:09:20 2000

Well, Cumrat. Apart from enjoying same sex relations, I am no different from the greater human population. Therefore, I want people to concentrate on my similarities, rather than my one difference. Although I love being in the Parade every yr, my one misgiving is that the general public think we are that outrageous for the rest of the yr, which of course isn't true. Mind you, I've always wondered where they think we disappear to for the remainder of the yr. The instalation at the Botanic Gardens in Sydney is fantastic & I recommend everyone go see it.
Wed Feb 16 9:46:56 2000
sound Does anyone know if a band is going to be playing at Fair Day this year? The Mavises were excellent last year. Will they be there again (probably not), or someone different?
Zakalwe - Wed Feb 16 10:01:11 2000
look But why in business suits. Whats that about.
Wed Feb 16 12:09:41 2000
Why not business suits?? If we can constantly go the extreme of drag queens without question then why can't we do business suits too?
Wed Feb 16 15:55:43 2000
look Representing their own interest Darling
Wed Feb 16 20:21:12 2000
All you drag queens are going to have to stop hogging the spotlight and learn to share it.
Thu Feb 17 0:09:47 2000
celebrate I think all the drag queens should be banished to the Free Fm tent as punishment!
Free is a drag! - Thu Feb 17 12:47:04 2000
speak Robyn Archer and Deborah Cheetham are also doing the Concert in Centennial Park. I Can't wait. Did anyone hear Deborah at The Stars Come Out singing Summertime? Awesome!
Thu Feb 17 12:59:07 2000
grassroots I'm disturbed by Ilana whats-her-name's comment that the Fair is a "family event". Family?! The sanitisation continues.
Nat - Thu Feb 17 14:05:35 2000
grassroots It is a family event - a queer family event! It is not a commercial marketing opportunity for some crappy radio station plugging Central Station records 24 hours a day and having no connection with the queer family at all - yes that's you Free!
Queer family - Thu Feb 17 14:57:31 2000
Gee Queer Family, there better not be a Killawarra or Telstra stand. And I hope I don't see Pal plastered all over the Dog area. Surely not.
Thu Feb 17 15:06:17 2000
sound Good comeback - I accept your point. But at least those products you mention have a use. Free FM is about as useful as a drug dealer with no drugs. Do they think they own fair day or something?
Queer F I mean who do they think they are demandingamily - Thu Feb 17 15:18:43 2000
act Well, Lets see the sponsors advertise vacant positions in our papers ... and employ?
managers,reps,handymen,accountant,teamleaders,customerservice,delivery,stats,packersandplebs - Thu Feb 17 18:42:20 2000
Is it just me - or has someone else noticed the banners flying from the poles along major city arterials. I thought (as I approached) "wow, they're stunning MG flage" then I got closer and found they were advertising FAC (Federal Airports Corporation)! Hmmmm.
Dots. - Thu Feb 17 20:09:01 2000
Lets see the major sponsors advertise their involvement with our community to the rest of Australia. They tell us how much they do, but are they proud enough, committed enough to tell anyone else? Or is it just a cheap marketing ploy?
Thu Feb 17 22:22:42 2000
Well, you can probably assume they don't know about it in Dubbo, Dorrigo or Deniliquin.
Fri Feb 18 0:59:49 2000
grassroots Dots - And have you notaced how the flags also have the rainbow colors/MG2000 logo upside down???? Everyone knows that the red is at the top!!! It's a physically unalterable fact weaved into the fabric of the universe that red is at the top.
Fri Feb 18 8:50:23 2000
PS. You've also probably just seen the ones flying in Hyde Park because the ones all up and down Oxford st have different sponsors names on them, Sydney Star etc. (but all of them are still upside down - subliminal homophobic message maybe? - kidding guys, don't turn this into some big deal cause the person doing the layout made a mistake)
Fri Feb 18 8:53:55 2000
look To all the people who are questioning the major sponsors loyalty to our community, do what I do. See it for what it is - a marketing campaign foolishly aimed at this (enlightened) target audience. Ignore the advertising, don't let it influence your decision when buying a product, let them waste there money sponsoring us, that way WE reap the benefits of all that money being poured into our community without having to give anything back in return.
Fri Feb 18 9:00:24 2000
It's one third over already !!!!!!
Fri Feb 18 9:23:32 2000
I wish someone would sponsor me and my flat mates in redfern!
Redfern Resident - Fri Feb 18 10:41:34 2000
oh look, if they paid a reasonable amount of money to help put the bllody thing on why complain. are we all so gullible? worry instead about Fox and their influence and what the deals are and whether they got their way on the shows being telecast
Fri Feb 18 12:16:38 2000
Optus have told me they are televising the shows as part of their pay per view Mardi Gras special.
Fri Feb 18 15:11:13 2000
grassroots I want my Foxtel. especially now that big Rupe has got the Mardi Gras official seal of approval for a live telecast of the action mens toilets. Only $20 on the Fox Troughman Channel - what a piss!
Foxy - Fri Feb 18 15:48:15 2000
Oh the paranoia and conspiracies. I don't mind the sponsors of Mardi Gras. At least they give money and products to Mardi Gras. What pisses me off is the NSW Government and lack of support for Mardi Gras and queer rights.
taxpayer - Fri Feb 18 17:26:57 2000
act Saw Foursome last night at the Seymour Centre downstairs. Two of the pieces were very good, one was good and the other one might have been better without the dancing. It is well worth seeing just for the 2 good pieces.
Panther - Fri Feb 18 17:46:55 2000
look Conspiracies? If they really are televising the shows — and I know they wanted to but I'll believe it when I see it — then something is very rotten in the state of Mardi Gras. ut is it true or just another wild rumour?
EC - Fri Feb 18 20:28:26 2000
look Without Doubt, something is Rotten
or slowely progressing to that state. - Fri Feb 18 22:55:34 2000
grassroots W`at's the problem with telecasting the shows? I think that it'll improve the popularity of the party and ensure that this fundraising event gets sold out even earlier next year.

act I caught "Boys on the Verge", the boys' coming out short films, this afternoon at the Film Festival. There were five short films of varying quality, from so-so to fantastic. But it was all worth the price of admission for "Crush". This short was absolutely hilarious, the topic of fag hags has never been covered like the way it has in this film. I think that it'll become a classic just like Beautiful Thing but funnier. There are still two more sessions of these shorts scheduled and I recommend anyone to see them, they're great. The Film Festival has always been one of my favourite parts of MG, hopefully I'll get a chance to catch some more of the films next week.

Great Fair Day MG, but who's great idea was it to put loudspeakers right next to the pond?? This has always been a chill out space for people, a place to sit down and relax away from the hussle of the rest of the park. Not very easy to do when you've got loudspeakers pumping out inappropriate music.

SevenOfNine - Mon Feb 28 21:35:43 2000
I agree. Great mix of movies but the venues were way too small. I know that this'll upset alot of the ghetto queens but Queer Screen should consider moving the festival to Dendy Newtown as it has much bigger (and cleaner) facilities. And they have air conditioning that works!!

Congratulations Mardi Gras on Kidszone, Le Space. At a time when church groups are advocating celebacy for gays & lesbians, Mardi Gras is pushing the boundaries and helping to define the concept of modern day family. sound Re Sound at Harbour Party - the conditions were perhaps the worst possible for the audio restrictions needed to not breach the act - flat harbour surface, low cloud cover and a southerly blowing. This pushed the sound straight into the residents of Kirribilli coupled with the noise coming from Tropfest. This was unfortunate and regretable leading to a very low level being obtainable for the middle part of the party (and unfortunately Kate's set). The level was able to be raised later after Tropfest ceased and the wind settled. Hope this explains the comments made regarding this element of the Party.

An article on the back of page of the SMH made some interesting comments about the recent Mardis Gras. It noted that "....the glamorous, thoughtful style queens lost out again to the forces of tawdry wholesale inclusiveness with too many Gay and Lesbain Mardis Gras parade entrants simply gaily go-go dancing on the barren back of trucks". It was also noted that there was a lack of irreverant political satire among the 200 floats. More interestingly they stated that, "Hardly any in the crowd recognised the cruxified Peirs Ackerman effigy, the lampooned Daily Telegraph fat-bellied moral pillar, let alone his digitally challenging display." Was the effigy of Piers Ackerman to obscure (even after the air play he got on 'Today Tonight' and the 'ABC News' on Friday night)or the float name "The Chardonnay Socilaists, Spears for Piers" to witty for the crowd. Or is this simply a reflection of the lack of interest or awareness of people in political issues. Are we polarised by the sit-coms. Considering that 'perception' not 'reality' is what drives society, is the Mardis Gras going to be perceived as merely a parade of glamour or still a protest march? We do we go from here?
DAE - Tue Mar 7 12:16:54 2000
DAE - Welcome to the 21st century. This is what so many people have been saying for so long. The gay community are considered flakes by the mainstream society because marching boys are the most prominent symbol of who we are. Time we grew up I think.
Tue Mar 7 16:51:52 2000
speak Mainstream society? That days Stay In touch was written by a crusty old queen who's been editing the Real Estate section for years. He's welcome to his view, but he is hardly mainstream
Thu Mar 9 17:11:09 2000
Well according the MG wearing a feather boah down down Oxford St is still a political act because you can't do that in the burbs. So according to MG, mainstream society it is a mainstream view that the parade is just a freak show.
Thu Mar 9 19:36:38 2000
Who is the MG Parade for anyway? - participants or onlookers?
Thu Mar 9 21:55:20 2000
Well if something is done as a political act then we must look at what the political consquences of that action is. If it is just reinforcing a stereotype and thus further entrenching the bigotry of those in power then that political act is completely useless.

We have to be smarter than just "being ourselves" when we know that the media and homophobic individuals and institutions like the churches will only pick out those things that reinforce the stereotypes they have of us. Most years we have the glitter floats as well as community groups in the parade. But the community groups N E V E R get any attention because the glitter floats take all the attention away.

We have to be smarter and start emphasising the community groups, the everyday-run-of-the-mill people who make up the vast majority of our community. I'm not saying that the board is responsible in making a decision as to who should or shouldn't be in the parade. It has to come from the community. We have to decide as a whole that the marching boys have had their go, that their time is now up and that they must now make way for others to have their go at the spotlight. That'll insure the long term well being of the Glbt community is improved.

What a lot of written comment for fun night out. Just enjoy it for what it is!
Fri Mar 10 17:34:55 2000
A political protest
Fri Mar 10 17:37:01 2000
It concerns me how much importance we give certain events where we show pride, strength, creativaty and sense of community...and yet necessities like the Luncheon Club are being forced to close their doors due to lack of funds. Mayhap we should check priorities?
Fri Mar 10 21:15:03 2000
Precisely my point. What is the point of having a "party" every year when we have nothing to celebrate? The problems with the Luncheon Club will only get worse as the Churches step up their campaign against us.
The party's over - Sat Mar 11 9:49:57 2000
speak To quote 'What a lot of comment for a fun night out. Just enjoy it for what it is!'. Here in lies the burning question, what is the SGLMG Parade all about? Is it 'just a fun night out', just another Sydney event drawing in the tourist dollars for the state or the opportunity for our community to exhibit our artistic talents, eliminate the bigotry and make the 'mainstream society' aware the issues affecting us? Considering the statement on the SGLMG membership application form; "We all feel passionately about Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardis Gras. Join us and turn that passion into commitment for our future. Through protest and celebration we have achieved so much in the last twenty years. Join now and be part of the next twenty years." I would hope that the parade demonstrates a balance of celebration and protest. As with any community (political) occurrence that transpires regularly its evolution form part of cyclic pattern, and the SGLMG Parade is no exception. Our cycle seems to consist of two polarised points of view being; 1) a chance for political demonstration and making the broader community aware of the various community groups that form the G & L community, and 2) a spectacle (moving theatre) with all the glitter, shimmering costumes and glamour that the G & L community can muster up. Considering some of the comments about the recent Parade it appears that there was may be too much theatre at the expense of political protest. I would have to agree, and am concerned, that this emphasis on theatrical component is used by, the media, the churches, and the bigots to reinforce the stereotypes they have of us. But as with any cycle I believe (and have faith I have in the common sense of our community) that these concerns will be addressed by future parades. A solution may be the amalgamation of the political (community group) and theatrical floats. This would take some clever innovations, which I am sure we are capable of enacting. Imagine that, the marching boys girth by placards of political comment! At least the media would then be forced to give coverage to the political comment.
DAE - Sat Mar 11 11:36:39 2000
The politics is there, it just gets forgotten in among all the glitter. Can anyone remember the Rights Lobby float or the militant lesbians?
Sat Mar 11 12:06:13 2000
No
Sat Mar 11 21:45:56 2000
yes, I remember the militant lesbians. ooooh. weren't they angry about the board members wearing fur coats. but in 2 years they'll be on the board and wearing twin sets and they can relax then.
Sun Mar 12 11:19:57 2000
Mardi Gras puts much needed glitter into politics. And our community groups get their message across so well doing this in the parade. The parade is a time to party - but with a message too. Get involved if you don't like what's happening. Get together with your mates and put something fab together for next year. Give me marching boys, lesbians, people living with HIV and AIDS, religious groups, bears, dykes on bikes, leather dykes, indigenous groups, Asian marching boys, young people, older queers, gay firendly police, designer dykes, fruits in suits, drag queens, trannies, bisexuals and straights. This is mardi gras, this is our time to party, this is queer pride - did you see it?
Hotspur Boy - Sun Mar 12 15:56:36 2000
See again, after you long speel, you said "it's time to party". You can't being partying, have lots of glitter around and not expect the political message to get diluted in the process.
Sun Mar 12 20:56:05 2000
grassroots Sorry I disagree - Mardi Gras proves you can mix party tames with politics. I guess we'll agree to differ.
Hotspur Boy - Mon Mar 13 11:41:12 2000
Glitter after a while tends to habituate. They should think of something new
