She's another straight performer cashing in on the pink dollar. If she was a dyke using dyke imagery because it's natural to her then I'd support her. But that's not the case, she's not even bisexual. In interviews she's very hetero and very married to her husband. So why not use hetero imagery to push her stage show/image.

What does it actually matter? I would have thought that her using lesbian imagery would have been more dangerous for her career rather than making her more successful. I don't care if she's straight or not, if she's hot and she's using hot girls, it's enough for me She's a great and talented performer and that's all there is to it - gay, straight, bi or whatever!

Using gay imagery doesn't ruin your career when you're straight. Unfair, but that's the way it goes.

Why is it "unfair" that her career isn't ruined by using gay imagery? Pink has always been very pro gay and lesbian, pro gay marriage, anti homophobia, etc... There's absolutely no reason she shouldn't use gay imagery in her show as far as I'm concerned, just as much as gay people should be able to use straight imagery in anything creative they do. It's entertainment, she's a performer, what happens on stage isn't supposed to be taken literally anyway....

They’ve shared the stage with Robbie Williams, the Scissor Sisters, Jamiroquai and James Brown, were named “one of the most sought after acts in the world” by the Daily Telegraph and their single “Pictures” has spent over three months in the number one spot on the club charts.

Now Sneaky Sound System have just been confirmed as the headline act for Get Together on the June Long Weekend. Get Together is the unique event that Fag Tag and Bitch are joining forces to create on Saturday June 9 at The Forum and surrounding spaces to continue the important tradition of Hand-in-Hand and raise much needed funds for the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON) on the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

Get Together will be the first time that Sneaky Sound System have played to a gay and lesbian audience in Sydney since taking the world by storm with the release of their platinum-selling debut album. Their breakthrough hit “Pictures” has spent more than three months at the top of the club charts (“I’ve got lots of pictures in my head, you better not turn off the projector…oohh!”) and their legendary live performances have seen them perform at every major stadium in the country, the recent MTV Awards and at Live Earth next month.

Enchanting lead singer Connie Mitchell, MC Double D, Black Angus and the Sneaky Sound System band will be performing all of their current hits, including “Pictures”, “UFO” and “I Love It”, in the intimate surrounds of The Forum at the Entertainment Quarter (formerly Fox Studios) as part of the 8-hour Get Together winter festival-style event.

Sneaky Sound System will be joined at Get Together by some of the best local talent who will be battling it out in a unique back-to-back DJ style that sees some of the country’s favourite DJs teaming up with each other. In the main room, Alex Taylor will take on Kate Monroe on the turntables, Chip fronts up against Brisbane’s Neroli and Scott Pullen battles Sista P.

In the second room, a special outdoor marquee is being erected outside of The Forum where musical legends like Stephen Allkins (Love Tattoo) will join DJs Sveta, Beatrix and GI Jode to lay down funk, soul and disco beats as a fun musical alternative to The Forum.

This has been mentioned before - neither Lickalicious nor Lickalisious are real words, so a spell check is pointless. It's a false word in any case, so what's the big deal?

the ending of that word: -cious has a correct spelling. it is 'CIOUS' so why not use the correct spelling. Obviously you do not have to, but it would seem to read better if you do.

I just read an article in MCV issue 344 (apparently Australia's leading GLBTIQ weekly media) on Butch/Femme relationships. The article by Jason Foster is apparently 'a critical look at butch/femme gender roles'.

I have to say I have NEVER been as offended and disgusted at an article written about a segment of the gay community as this one. Here is the link:

I'm not subscribing to the generalisations made in this article, but since the door is open I've been dying to comment on the last book of Val's that I read - it had me so disgusted by the graphic sexual violence that I swore off reading her books forever - and I used to be quite fond of her writing. I thought it was gratuitous and sick.

Kelly Lynch is leaving the bank hotel, wednesdays will not be the same

I'm really unimpressed with the image chosen for the Bank promotion. Combined with the theme for the xmas party it is appealing directly to a het male audience and creates a very ambiguous statement of intent.
Is the Bank really catering to our lesbian market or merely using the community's lemming like behaviour to really engage another audience who will in the long term create more profit for the venue?
I was surprised to see that on the Bank's own website they proudly promote they received an award for New Hotel of the Year - are they not a new renovation, not a new venue?
Who is really prepared to put their money into our community? Where will the next great girls venue be?
The Sly Fox is trying had to cater to a very diverse crowd but it is only a wee venue. The Flinders is really the only venue on the east side with a run of regular girls nights but is again quite small. Getting to the Flinders on a Saturday is difficult if you take the Oxford St route. The Slox has had a run of bad reports of taxi drivers taking advantage of female patrons leaving under the weather and the door security have a wavering method of crowd control. What to do? Who is prepared to take a leap and try a new venue?
The demise of the Newtown and the unknown length of the Imperial renovation leaves us figuratively out on the street for some time to come.
Any ideas?

I also found it strange that there was only 1 actual DJ judging the event, not the best i would say. Well I for one have taken a whole week to feel relatively normal. I had such a good time at Slide on the Sunday after Mardi Gras party - my goodness. Now there's some confusion as to who was djing at the time - when I asked the bar staff, they told me it was Bel West - that was around midnight I guess - but who knows?

Can anyone shed any light on this? We arrived at around 9.00 or so to some lovely house music. Cyndi Lauper turned up at some stage for a boogie. The music was just fab all night - I don't often make it to 3.30am and not want to go to bed!

the May edition of The Hellfire Club is going to be totally XX-rated, with all-grrl DJs and performers all night, celebrating the creme de la femme of the women who’ve made the club so different, so special over so many years.

DJ Sveta will be hitting the Hellfire decks at 1.30am, hot on the back of our sexy resident DJ Mandy Rollins playing an epic 4-hour set from 9.30pm-1.30am. Ultra caught up with Sveta briefly and asked her whether she was excited about playing Hellfire, and she replied:

“It’s always a special night for me when I get to play at Hellfire. I’ve been playing on and off at the party for close to 14 years and love seeing all the regulars and all the new faces that pop up. I look forward to a night of dirty beats and even dirtier displays in the crowd.”

Since that time she’s been in Beijing for the second anniversary of Vogue magazine; as well as performing on a giant free-standing aerial tripod which Coke snapped up for their Future Music Festival and for Good Vibrations! According to Wendy: “standing eight meters off the ground and hanging from your neck from the tripod is what I think the art of pain is about” ...and for her show at Hellfire she’ll be giving us a miniature (and more kinky- sensual) version of her Coke show.

Leaping from the depths of a strong, ice-cold cocktail, Vesper White is the latest bump and grinding beauty to hit Australia. As a young lass she was trained in ballet and theatre, and now as the youngest addition to Sydney’s growing burlesque scene at only nineteen years old, her curves and moves will knock the living daylights out of you!

With the charm and cheek of a Tease-a-rama girl, the raw energy of Bettie Page and the heart-stopping hip-grind of the Chicago State Fair exotics, Vesper is one dark hip-shaking, home-wrecking, heartbreaker. She has been performing continually in the Sydney circuit since August with Sugartime, 34B and Black Cherry, along with several band appearances, most notably Zombie Ghost Train and Sparkadia. After sharing her wiggle at the Live08 Festival in Melbourne in February, Miss White has most recently returned from Queensland’s Garterbelts and Gasoline Kustom show and the Central Coast’s The Village show.

Lately, a more sinister side of Vesper has evolved, and she has begun to share her delight in all things fetish! Her love of nylons, Japanese rope bondage and closet skeletons have made themselves evident in her latest work; a dark exploration of escaping self indulgence, breaking her bonds of the clean cut pin-up and embracing a more satisfying form of fetish. Hellfire will be seeing a sly, electrically-charged Houdini act of the most delicious rope order at our May Club Night.

Same sex attracted women down south have an interesting diverse range of opportunities to get together thanks to Southern Women's Health and Active Southern Dykes.It would be great to get 2 or 3 events organised in the Port region each month. Tip of the Tongue in Montreal uses an email list to keep it low maintenance and easy to run by volunteers.Activities would be centred around Port Adelaide with roughboundaries of Outer Harbour, Wingfield, Thebarton and Henley Beach. Ideally events would be free or low cost and easily accessibleby public transport. Eating venues should be wheelchair accessible.

Description: Queer Animation—a public lecture by Professor J.Jack Halberstam

I want to lay out a thesis about a new genre of animated feature films that use Computer Generated Image (CGI) technology instead of standard linear animation techniques and that surprisingly foreground the themes of revolution and transformation. I will call this genre “Pixarvolt” in order to show that in new animation films certain topics that would simply never appear in adult films are central to the success and emotional impact of these narratives. Pixarvolt films make subtle as well as overt connections between communitarian revolt and queer embodiment and thereby articulate, in ways that theory and popular narrative have not, the sometimes counter-intuitive links between queerness and socialist struggle.

I am a Hawaii girl getting ready for a change of pace so I decided to spend a few years out in Australia and I was looking for some input on a good place to live. I was thinking about the Gold Coast as I am a surfer but I would also like to be in an area with a good lesbian community, preferably with a couple fun girl bars I would love some suggestions!

you could always live in the gold coast and come down to sydeny for parties. otherwise there a surf beaches in sydney that are not hours away - heck you can surf at bondi and the weather is good for it (mostly). the downside of melbourne is the weather - from a surfing point of view and the distance needed to travel for good surf beaches - but when you get there - they are very good.

Not last Saturday but the weekend before the GF and me went to something called 'dogpound' at the Phoenix, mady played a blinder

Maroubra is a great surfing beach too. If you lived around Coogee, you'd be close to the beaches and not that far away from Newtown and Oxford St. I reckon Sydney's the best place on earth, personally.

Due to the small number of entries that have been received to date for the girl's up-and-coming DJ competition, the judges have decided to extend the deadline for entries until 5pm on Friday 30th January.

New Mardi Gras encourages all up-and-coming girl DJs to put their best CD forward for the competition. The best submissions will go forward to the spin-off competition at the Supper Club on 14th February from which a winner will be picked to play at the world famous Mardi Gras party on March 7th.
