Re:
She's another straight performer cashing in on the pink dollar. If she was a dyke using dyke imagery because it's natural to her then I'd support her. But that's not the case, she's not even bisexual. In interviews she's very hetero and very married to her husband. So why not use hetero imagery to push her stage show/image.

Re:
What does it actually matter? I would have thought that her using lesbian imagery would have been more dangerous for her career rather than making her more successful. I don't care if she's straight or not, if she's hot and she's using hot girls, it's enough for me She's a great and talented performer and that's all there is to it - gay, straight, bi or whatever!

Re:
Using gay imagery doesn't ruin your career when you're straight. Unfair, but that's the way it goes.
- Wed 2 May 2007 14:26:35 Replies: 1, add

Re:
Why is it "unfair" that her career isn't ruined by using gay imagery? Pink has always been very pro gay and lesbian, pro gay marriage, anti homophobia, etc... There's absolutely no reason she shouldn't use gay imagery in her show as far as I'm concerned, just as much as gay people should be able to use straight imagery in anything creative they do. It's entertainment, she's a performer, what happens on stage isn't supposed to be taken literally anyway....

Help - We are having a moment !
I'm going to Canberra for work and haven't got the foggiest idea where anything GAY or more precisely Lezzo is? Where does one go for coffee at 6.30am on her way to work? Gay or at least friendly gyms for a mega tattooed lezzo? Alternative accommodation - inexpensive and clean (in case mine turns out to be dodgy)?? Bars/Clubs/Cafe's to hang out mid week? Any help, directions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

The event wouldn't have been made possible without the participation of the amazing performers. If any of you would like to get in contact with some of the performers/filmmakers, please let me know and I will forward you their details.

Bitch & FagTag join forces for 'Get Together' Sat 9 June
Sneaky Sound System To Headline Get Together

They’ve shared the stage with Robbie Williams, the Scissor Sisters, Jamiroquai and James Brown, were named “one of the most sought after acts in the world” by the Daily Telegraph and their single “Pictures” has spent over three months in the number one spot on the club charts.

Now Sneaky Sound System have just been confirmed as the headline act for Get Together on the June Long Weekend. Get Together is the unique event that Fag Tag and Bitch are joining forces to create on Saturday June 9 at The Forum and surrounding spaces to continue the important tradition of Hand-in-Hand and raise much needed funds for the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON) on the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend

Get Together will be the first time that Sneaky Sound System have played to a gay and lesbian audience in Sydney since taking the world by storm with the release of their platinum-selling debut album. Their breakthrough hit “Pictures” has spent more than three months at the top of the club charts (“I’ve got lots of pictures in my head, you better not turn off the projector…oohh!”) and their legendary live performances have seen them perform at every major stadium in the country, the recent MTV Awards and at Live Earth next month.

Enchanting lead singer Connie Mitchell, MC Double D, Black Angus and the Sneaky Sound System band will be performing all of their current hits, including “Pictures”, “UFO” and “I Love It”, in the intimate surrounds of The Forum at the Entertainment Quarter (formerly Fox Studios) as part of the 8-hour Get Together winter festival-style event.

Sneaky Sound System will be joined at Get Together by some of the best local talent who will be battling it out in a unique back-to-back DJ style that sees some of the country’s favourite DJs teaming up with each other. In the main room, Alex Taylor will take on Kate Monroe on the turntables, Chip fronts up against Brisbane’s Neroli and Scott Pullen battles Sista P.
Nancy Vice – vocalist for TV Rock – Bimbo Nation will be performing live. Also vocalist Kyla Sexton, takes to the Mic with a live vocal set. In the second room, a special outdoor marquee is being erected outside of The Forum where musical legends like Stephen Allkins (Love Tattoo) will join DJs Sveta, Beatrix and GI Jode to lay down funk, soul and disco beats as a fun musical alternative to The Forum.

Get Together runs from 6pm to 2am on Saturday June 9 of the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. First Release tickets are $55 plus booking fee until sold out. Second Release tickets are $65 and Final Release tickets are $69. They are available from www.SameSame.com.au, HUM Records Oxford Street and Newtown and Moshtix. www.moshtix.com.au

Get Together -- congrats to the promoters
I'm not usually a Bitch fan but Saturday night's Get Together was one of the best dance parties I've been to in years. The DJs were faultless, the music was happy, the crowd was a perfect mix of dykes and poofs, the outside tent was full of lounges and heaters to make a warm and cosy space, Sneaky Sound System had the crowd going off and the complimentary bus ferrying patrons to the Flinders at 2am ran smoothly. What more can you ask for!?! Well done Bitch and Fag Tag.

A most appaling article...
I just read an article in MCV issue 344 (apparently Australia's leading GLBTIQ weekly media) on Butch/Femme relationships. The article by Jason Foster is apparently 'a critical look at butch/femme gender roles'.

I have to say I have NEVER been as offended and disgusted at an article written about a segment of the gay community as this one. Here is the link:

http://sxnews.info/imagedb/displayimage.php?pid=8979&fullsize=1

Quotable quotes:

1) 'Fortunately, among gay males in particular, the butch/femme routine has become largely passe.'
or perhaps this one - when describing his recent observations of a butch/femme female couple in a cafe:
'...the Femme was delicately sipping a glass of white winewhile the butch insisted on swigging a stubbie over dinner. Strangely enough, the straight males at various other tables seemed to think wine complimented their meals better than beer. But I guess they didnt feel they had anything to prove.'

If you think i've taken these comments out of context, think again - and beleive me there are plenty more misinformed, ignorant and nasty assertions where that came from.

I'm not subscribing to the generalisations made in this article, but since the door is open I've been dying to comment on the last book of Val's that I read - it had me so disgusted by the graphic sexual violence that I swore off reading her books forever - and I used to be quite fond of her writing. I thought it was gratuitous and sick.

Just to explain - coz I'm no prude when it comes to icky bits in books - BUT - the murder weapon in this book was a dildo emedded with razor blades. Repeated, detailed references to the weapon and the torture associated with it - ugh. If that doesn't make you wonder what's going on in an author's mind...........

Or maybe I'm getting a bit sensitive in my dotage. Can't recall the name of the book, so here comes the dementia as well. sigh.

Launch of Cherrie magazine
Cherrie is the brand new monthly magazine from Evolution Publishing, the largest publisher of GLBTIQ titles in Australia.

Cherrie is for sex-positive queer or 'not so straight' chicks who are interested in fashion, entertainment and pop culture as well as politics and global issues. Whether an urban ghetto babe, self-possessed boi, high-femme lipstick lesbian, funky fetishist or radical queer/genderqueer underground freak, Cherrie is for the gal whose sexuality and gender identity is important, but not necessarily the be-all and end-all of her life. She’s more likely to seek out the latest iPod than IVF treatments and knows that it’s possible, if not preferable, to change the world while sporting a fab new haircut!

The first issue of Cherrie(October issue) hits the streets this Thursday (September 20), so keep your eye out for it and pick it up from your favourite venues and outlets.

COME TO OUR LAUNCH PARTY IN SYDNEY!

What: Cherrie launch party, with nibbles and champers
When: Wednesday 19 September, 6-9pm
Where: Flinders Hotel, 63 Flinders St, Darlinghurst, Sydney
DJ Sista P will be spinning the tunes!
Everyone welcome - girls, boys, bois, trans etc (there'll no policing of genitals or gender!). Feel free to bring friends.

Raise the Bar is a community campaign for you to voice your opinions on new liquor licenses being proposed for NSW. The new laws will be decided upon in the coming weeks so we must act fast.

The last time NSW had a new Liquor Act was 1982, when Malcolm Fraser was Prime Minister and the CD hadn't even been invented! We can't spend another 25 years without licenses the rest of Australia takes for granted.

Don't let your voice be drowned out by people who can pay for influence. The monopoly on NSW liquor licenses is damaging NSW socially and economically. Be a part of the change NSW has to have.

Re:
I'm really unimpressed with the image chosen for the Bank promotion. Combined with the theme for the xmas party it is appealing directly to a het male audience and creates a very ambiguous statement of intent.
Is the Bank really catering to our lesbian market or merely using the community's lemming like behaviour to really engage another audience who will in the long term create more profit for the venue?
I was surprised to see that on the Bank's own website they proudly promote they received an award for New Hotel of the Year - are they not a new renovation, not a new venue?
Who is really prepared to put their money into our community? Where will the next great girls venue be?
The Sly Fox is trying had to cater to a very diverse crowd but it is only a wee venue. The Flinders is really the only venue on the east side with a run of regular girls nights but is again quite small. Getting to the Flinders on a Saturday is difficult if you take the Oxford St route. The Slox has had a run of bad reports of taxi drivers taking advantage of female patrons leaving under the weather and the door security have a wavering method of crowd control. What to do? Who is prepared to take a leap and try a new venue?
The demise of the Newtown and the unknown length of the Imperial renovation leaves us figuratively out on the street for some time to come.
Any ideas?

NYE at the Flinders featuring Chip, Renae Stanton and Sandi Hotrod
As the end of yet another year fast approaches there is one crucial decision that still remains… the difficult task of choosing where to spend your NYE!

Those that have opted out of attending the bigger parties this year and are still looking to make this NYE a truly momentous occasion should look no further than the Flinders Hotel.

Boasting a 24 hour license and an awesome sound system, and being situated close by to all the action of Oxford St (while being far enough away from the chaotic inner city party revellers!), the Flinders is the ideal venue to kick off your NYE celebrations or stick around and party 'til dawn.

DJ’s CHIP, RENAE STANTON and SANDI HOTROD make up the talented cast of 3 behind the decks doing what they do best, mixing and spinning the tunes that have not only made them household names within the GLBT community but have also elevated them to number among Sydney’s hottest DJ’s of 2007.

So why not make the Flinders Hotel your pick of venue for this NYE? With an entry fee of a mere $15.00 it’s hard to think why not!

where to go after mardi gras
Anyone know any after party events as an alternative to the "official" after party at fox studios?

Went last year and what is on offer for women was poor.

Where else to go????

I hear a straight girl won the final, DJ Toi, is she straight or gay??? anyone know , i was there and thought her music was the same from one track to another. I also found it strange that there was only 1 actual DJ judging the event, not the best i would say. I prefered the music selection that was played by bel west was better for mardi gras and she is gay!!!

Huh? Why is a straight group riding in mardi gras? I'm all for people showing their support, but with it being the 30th anniversary of MG and 20th anniversary of DOB's it seems to dilute the gayness. I wonder what the rationale is?

Well I for one have taken a whole week to feel relatively normal. I had such a good time at Slide on the Sunday after Mardi Gras party - my goodness. Now there's some confusion as to who was djing at the time - when I asked the bar staff, they told me it was Bel West - that was around midnight I guess - but who knows? ;)

Can anyone shed any light on this? We arrived at around 9.00 or so to some lovely house music. Cyndi Lauper turned up at some stage for a boogie. The music was just fab all night - I don't often make it to 3.30am and not want to go to bed!

Sveta and Mandy Rollins lead an all-grrl lineup!
Hi there,
the May edition of The Hellfire Club is going to be totally XX-rated, with all-grrl DJs and performers all night, celebrating the creme de la femme of the women who’ve made the club so different, so special over so many years.

DJ Sveta will be hitting the Hellfire decks at 1.30am, hot on the back of our sexy resident DJ Mandy Rollins playing an epic 4-hour set from 9.30pm-1.30am. Ultra caught up with Sveta briefly and asked her whether she was excited about playing Hellfire, and she replied:

“It’s always a special night for me when I get to play at Hellfire. I’ve been playing on and off at the party for close to 14 years and love seeing all the regulars and all the new faces that pop up. I look forward to a night of dirty beats and even dirtier displays in the crowd.”

And the shows?

At 11:30pm: Blonde and bodacious Wendy Dys, curator of the Studio Kirk Gallery last appeared at Hellfire in January 2007 http://hellfiresydney.com/blog/?p=427

Since that time she’s been in Beijing for the second anniversary of Vogue magazine; as well as performing on a giant free-standing aerial tripod which Coke snapped up for their Future Music Festival and for Good Vibrations! According to Wendy: “standing eight meters off the ground and hanging from your neck from the tripod is what I think the art of pain is about” ...and for her show at Hellfire she’ll be giving us a miniature (and more kinky- sensual) version of her Coke show.

Check out some photos of her on the Lira (or hoop) here: http://hellfiresydney.com/blog/?p=1024

Then at 1:30am:

Leaping from the depths of a strong, ice-cold cocktail, Vesper White is the latest bump and grinding beauty to hit Australia. As a young lass she was trained in ballet and theatre, and now as the youngest addition to Sydney’s growing burlesque scene at only nineteen years old, her curves and moves will knock the living daylights out of you!

With the charm and cheek of a Tease-a-rama girl, the raw energy of Bettie Page and the heart-stopping hip-grind of the Chicago State Fair exotics, Vesper is one dark hip-shaking, home-wrecking, heartbreaker. She has been performing continually in the Sydney circuit since August with Sugartime, 34B and Black Cherry, along with several band appearances, most notably Zombie Ghost Train and Sparkadia. After sharing her wiggle at the Live08 Festival in Melbourne in February, Miss White has most recently returned from Queensland’s Garterbelts and Gasoline Kustom show and the Central Coast’s The Village show.

Lately, a more sinister side of Vesper has evolved, and she has begun to share her delight in all things fetish! Her love of nylons, Japanese rope bondage and closet skeletons have made themselves evident in her latest work; a dark exploration of escaping self indulgence, breaking her bonds of the clean cut pin-up and embracing a more satisfying form of fetish. Hellfire will be seeing a sly, electrically-charged Houdini act of the most delicious rope order at our May Club Night.

See Vesper in her full glory on the Hellfire Blog here: http://hellfiresydney.com/blog/?p=1019

And as always, there’s the $100.00 SAX Fetish DIY Fetish Encouragement Award on offer for those who are just stepping out into the fetish fantasy fashion world, generously donated by our always-gorgeous sponsors. Home-made and DIY outfits are what we are rewarding here, so make sure you catch Ultra before 11:30pm to be in the running for this great prize.

So we hope to see you at The Hellfire Club at The Gaff from 9:30pm next Friday May 16th.

Port Adelaide region activities for ssattracted women
Same sex attracted women down south have an interesting diverse range of opportunities to get together thanks to Southern Women's Health and Active Southern Dykes. It would be great to get 2 or 3 events organised in the Port region each month. Tip of the Tongue in Montreal uses an email list to keep it low maintenance and easy to run by volunteers.Activities would be centred around Port Adelaide with roughboundaries of Outer Harbour, Wingfield, Thebarton and Henley Beach. Ideally events would be free or low cost and easily accessibleby public transport. Eating venues should be wheelchair accessible.

If you
can suggest a name for the network
would like to be on the email list
have ideas for activities
prefer certain days and times
are able to coordinate one or more events
please send an email to northwestssawomen@yahoo.com

If you know anyone who might be interested please forward this
information on to them. When enough women (300-400) are on the list to ensure a
respectable (10-15) turnout to each event, considering different
interests and schedules, the first events will be organised. No more than 2 emails would be sent each month.

Ideas so far include: bike ride from Cafe Primo at North Haven to Cafe Froot at Semaphore - ten pin bowling night at Woodville - tour of the Animal Welfare League shelter
soccer friendly + picnic at Semaphore - kayaking along the Port River - lawn bowls day at Largs Bay - brunch at Lipson St Cafe, Port Adelaide followed by a gallery crawl - iceskating afternoon at Thebarton - dinner on Semaphore Rd followed by a film at Odeon cinema - pancakes at the Port then a dolphin cruise - bike ride from a Croydon cafe to Henley Beach along the linear park
then connecting with trains at Grange or Ethelton -
pool night at the Gov - opshop crawl along Semaphore Rd then lunch - indigenous planting morning on the foreshore
(under guidance of friends group) - learn-to-kiteboard at Largs Bay - tour of Adelaide's recycling facilities - mosaic workshop at Sarah's Sister cafe - cycling the Dolphin Trail

Description: Queer Animation—a public lecture by Professor J.Jack Halberstam

I want to lay out a thesis about a new genre of animated feature films that use Computer Generated Image (CGI) technology instead of standard linear animation techniques and that surprisingly foreground the themes of revolution and transformation. I will call this genre “Pixarvolt” in order to show that in new animation films certain topics that would simply never appear in adult films are central to the success and emotional impact of these narratives. Pixarvolt films make subtle as well as overt connections between communitarian revolt and queer embodiment and thereby articulate, in ways that theory and popular narrative have not, the sometimes counter-intuitive links between queerness and socialist struggle.

Public Transport
Central Station is the closest railway station to the Powerhouse Museum. From Central Station take the eastern exits to Railway Square/George Street. Turn left into George Street and then right into Harris Street. Walk down Harris Street for 5-10 minutes until you reach the Museum on your right. For further information: http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/visit/howtogethere.asp

Parking
Parking for the Powerhouse Museum is available at the Entertainment Centre Car Park on Darling Drive. The Level 3A RED parking area is the most convenient to the covered walkway connecting the parking station to the Museum (a two minute walk). When tickets are validated at the Museum, a special flat rate of $11.50 (inc GST) applies.

I was thinking about the Gold Coast as I am a surfer but I would also like to be in an area with a good lesbian community, preferably with a couple fun girl bars ;) I would love some suggestions!

Sapphic Sydney was created with the aim of strengthening Sydney's lesbian & queer female community by connecting women & providing easily accessible information on lesbian events, activities and community news in Sydney.

We aim to be a friendly and inclusive service which embraces all types of queer including lesbian, bisexual, transgender or any other type of not-so-straight (including women who are curious or simply queer friendly).

Our Sydney lesbian events listings make it easy to find out what is on and when in just a few clicks and includes not only lesbian nightlife & scene events but also other interesting events and activities including art, theatre, sports, concerts, festivals, camping trips, and anything else relevant to Sydney's lesbian & queer female community.

Our online community offers a friendly introduction to the Sydney lesbian/queer community for women who have recently come out, who are new to Sydney, or who are simply looking to meet new people. Membership is 100% free and includes access to member profiles, forums and (coming soon) galleries.

Re:
Ummmm, not quite correct, Pink has admitted that she and her brother had a major falling out because her 1st girlfriend left her for him. She has history and I believe inclination, just has chosen the person she loves. Besides she doesnt just "USE" imagery for her shows, she is an activist for Equal Gay rights. If she's full on hetero, thats cool, at least she's on our team even if shes not batting for us!!
