The big news on the party scene is from New Mardi Gras. Theey have decided to split the Parade and Party onto separate nights. Fair Day and Launch will be 21 February 2010, Parade will be 27 February, Harbour Party 28 February and Party 6 March. A major post-Parade event has been planned for that night.
This is a brave move by New Mardi Gras. There are many reasons for the change, which I won't enumerate here. I congratulate New Mardi Gras on making such a brave decision. I hope it works, and if not I hope New Mardi Gras reviews the decision.

Mardi Gras changes
I think it will totally ruin the vibe of the party... plus they are leaving themselves wide open for someone else to create an alternate large party on parade night.
Why would you change the only event that is bringing in the cash? Maybe they are planning two parties... one on parade night and a closing one the week after? Does this mean the end of the one big party?
didn't they have the date for the 2010 parade/party on their website? Have those dates changed? Are NMG going to refund anyone who booked trips from overseas who now find the dates NMG advised were wrong?
Yep it's all backwards. The parade is the high of the festival and having the "after" party a week later just won't work.
You are right, someone will come in and put a major party on the night of the parade and just reap all the $$$$$$.
I can't believe NMG don't understand how everything in the festival builds to the parade the party. Putting the parade in the middle of the festival is just wrong!
After the Parade everyone is pumped and its a huge lead
up and the buzz/vibe is just awesome.
The Party on the weekend will just be another Party.
They also say NMG will put on an after Party when Parade
finishes so where will that be ? if out at Fox then it may end up being inundated with people and the following weeks party may die in the arse ?
Friends from interstate will choose one weekend not both and I live in Sydney but will only choose one.
Its great to shrink the season down some but I just do not get separating the Parade and Party.
As previous poster has said it brings in big $'s doesnt it ? or certainly has the last few years. If they are going to say put on 2 smaller parties then I can only see the after Parade party selling out and the one the following week not doing so well.
So NMG has finally responded to the 'same old, tired old formula' criticism. But now they will have to deal with the 'don't mess with our iconic day' complaints.
There will be no pleasing everyone I guess, nor should they try to - for me it will be great as I can now be in the Parade or volunteer and still enjoy the Party without being too shagged to enjoy it.
The excuse of 'I'm not going to Parade coz I need to get ready for the Party' is no longer valid ... so maybe we will see more community participation in Parade? I hope so.
Oh and I don't actually think this is new - I seem to recall that way back there was a separation of the day the Parade and Party happened (so it is kinda back to the future!).
Innovation is good - I hope they have a plan to ensure that it works positively for all.
I think you'll find they are planning a big event on the night of the parade. I'm worried about the impact on overseas visitors - they'll come for parade or party but possibly not both? I suspect it may be the beginning of the end of the parade but good on 'em for trying something new!
Well I personally think it's a great move. Hell, they can try it for a couple of years and if it doesn't work, go back to the old formula. I think a lot of people are afraid of change but will get over it once they see it's possible. Also, comments about overseas visitors is rubbish in my opinion. If you're from overseas, you will be on the Mardi Gras website first and foremost and where will the key dates be - on the MG website!
I am very very much looking forward to being in parade AND attending the party which I've not done for a few years as I simply don't have the stamina for both. I reckon the parties that have traditionally been "recoveries" after Parade/Party would do well to take place after Party next year, eg, Toy Box (yay) and Homesexual.
What a great idea - no more spending the first two hours of the party tending to blisters from Parade - yippeee!
I love the plan NMG, you better get it right - and it breathes new life in to Harbor Party as this will be a great big glam recovery for all who went in the Parade (and are given 12 hours to freshen up ) - I hope NMG takes advantage of this and gets that party back to where it should be which is the best location for the best gay party in the world.
One suggestion though - give us back 2 hours of MG Party by starting earlier - I feel the 8.00am finish has cheated me somehow.
A couple of friends who were involved in a float this year tried to do the party afterwards, but ended up leaving early, they were just too tired. People dont realise how much effort actually goes into the parade, with this new plan they wouldnt have to worry.
I dont think you get it re international visitors. Why would they want to spend upto 2 weeks in Sydney ? when they have come so far ? They dont all get 4 weeks annual holidays like we do. Some only get 2 weeks so they spend time in Sydney for MG then head off to other cities.
And can they give it a go for a couple of years and if it doesnt work go back to the old formula ? ummmmmmmm if they dont get any $'s then the whole thing wont survive a couple of years with less money coming in.
The after Party is the only one on that night and when its done right brings in huge dollars.
If they cut it down to 2 parties ie one after the parade and then one the week after just how many people will want to do 2 party weekends in a row ? who will be able to afford 2 parties in a row ? and what if other party promoters decide to go up against MG on that Sat night ?
Sure the party after the Parade will be very popular as most people are not in the Parade so they have the energy to carry onto afterwards but I just dont see the party on the following weekend being as big or as popular.
Sure you have to change things and shortening the season is a great idea but there are some things that just dont need change. They changed the formula for Sleaze last year and it was not very well attended.
Its NMG's time to rake in the money that weekend by dominating the whole weekend. Dilute the party and I can only seem the money stream being diluted as well and its goodbye NMG again.
I just told my friends in Europe & North America about the change and they all said "about time, whew". They're rapt, they get a full week to enjoy Sydney Mardi Gras. Well done gang
It seems that people have forgotten the financial disaster that occurred called the Gay Games!
This was a similar festival that ran over a period of 2 weeks! Parties also happened on numerous nights over a week.
Do we really want our organisation to go Bankrupt again by silly and strange management!!! The parade and party work together and are a financial success because they both happen on the same night. This is not about change, this is about doing what works ...
I want Mardi Gras to be sustainable for other young Gays and Lesbians however this is not the way to do it!
I will be travelling insterstate this year specifically for the AGM and really believe that the current Board needs to be voted out! This is totally unnacceptable, there has been no extraodinary meeting called discussing such a big change! This board is accountable to us the members and cannot continue to operate in such a negligent way!
Sure great for those in the Parade to get a week off
but what kind of party will they have a week later ?
I can only imagine that whatever is put on after the
Parade will still be the most popular party to go to as people will be out and pumped and wont want to be going home when the Parade finishes around 10pm'ish.
So seeing as the Parade/Harbour Party/whatever after Party is done with why bother hanging around Sydney for another week ? other cities to see.
Then the Party the following week could possibly have
very low numbers.
Its just a shame if they dilute the huge Party into 2 smaller parties. We only get the one big Party a year now with all those Halls/all those choices.
Cut the party into 2 weekends could end up with 2 smaller parties which will be no different from any other party time.
The bulk of patrons come from within Australia most wont fly in for both weekends most of us cant or couldnt afford it. So something has to be missed parade or party.
"I just told my friends in Europe & North America about the change and they all said "about time, whew". They're rapt, they get a full week to enjoy Sydney Mardi Gras. Well done gang"
Well my mates in the US had booked tickets based on the incorrect dates on the NMG website. To change the booking will cost a couple of hundred each whereas canceling this far out will cost them nothing.
Why don't mardi gras outsource the party and reek the rewards??? The productions of the Party during the late 90's early 2000's were fantastic. I know they wernt sustainable but I think that came down to poor management and too many committees trying to be involved. We have to remember this is a party for us to celebrate who we are and what we are, why can't the party be put on for us??? - Ive travelled around the world and there are companies that do just that.
You can bet your life that every major promoter will be scrambling to secure a venue for mardi gras parade night or the day after given the vacuum that not having the main party will cause.
That being said Mardi Gras being Mardi Gras dont do anything that isn't in their own self (read financial) interest so my bet is that they have a couple of parties planned.
It's either a stupid mistake or they are about to make Mardi Gras a massive week long party.
"Re: Re: Mardi Gras changes
I don't get it sweetie.
Once they cancel the old booking for free they can book a new itinerary."
not if they can't re-schedule their time off work etc. That time of year is difficult to get annual leave with events like the real Mardi Gras going on amongst others.
After the Parade, myself & my partner normally then rush down to the Party at Fox Studios through the back way (Anzac Pde), avoiding the straight masses that then wander throught the city to all hours.
So withouth Party... what should we do- rush straight home instead, linging up with thousands of others for public transport, or walk & potentially get bashed, or "try" & get into one of the gay venues on the strip?
JoJo has updated his Facebook to say next year's MG Frisky will be on Saturday, February 27. That's the night of the parade....
Smart move. It's not competing with Toybox on the same weekend and there's a great party for people to go to after the parade.... PLUS keeps the trance heads happy and fresh for MG/Toybox the next week.
"It's not competing with Toybox on the same weekend and there's a great party for people to go to after the parade.... PLUS keeps the trance heads happy and fresh for MG/Toybox the next week"
Your assuming Toybox will be on the following weekend. Why wouldn't Toybox have their party on the day after the parade and take advantage of all the tourists in town. It's not as if anyone is going to bother going to Harbour party.
I really think all the partying is going to happen on the parade weekend and that Mardi Gras party will be forced to downsize just like they've done to Sleaze Ball.
If MG Frisky 2010 is anything like the upcoming 7th June one (with snow machines, bubble machines and confetti blowers) it will be a carbon copy of Toybox.
Shortly after the parade this year there was an article in one of the papers talking about an idea for an event after the parade. From memory it said something about a concert in Hyde Park.
What if they put on a free concert in, say, Moore Park to finish the parade? This would then be a place for people hyped by the parade, but not yet ready to finish the night, to spend a couple of hours. Then they could either go home or to some small party or venue.
And this is what worries me about this recent move by NMG.
It gives parties like Frisky and others a chance to grap punters away from NMG's parties. Dont get me wrong , good on JoJo but if NMG's parties dont get the numbers then they can have a cash problem.
Someone mentioned they got $400,000 for some Govt dept but can they count on that every year ?
And as for giving people a week to get over it and be ready for the following weekends party/s how many will do and be able to afford 2 parties ? Thats whats so great at MG seeing old faces you only ever see at the big parties and already my friends and I will only be doing one weekend not both. Just going to wait till we see what is on. Our preference will be to do a party after the Parade as it hypes everyone one up. We also dont want to be on Oxford St or in an Oxford St club after the Parade. Oxford St is ugly then. Its just so great to follow the Parade out to Fox and all the great venues you can choose from.
I can just see this decision to break it up over 2 weekends diluting the number of party goers that will attend the MG parties.
A concert in More Park after the parade at 10pm?
I highly doubt it - Fox has serious noise restrictions as it it - can you imagine the residents putting up with an outdoor concert??!!
Not to mention this would be hideous, sorry, call me gay, but i love my dance parties and i only do a 3-4 a year. Hopefully Mardi Gras will continue to be one of them.
Agree they wont have a concert in the Park at 10pm at night. The locals put a stop to Club Hordern about 15 years ago because of noise.
Already Frisky has announced a party after the parade. Just needs a couple of other promoters like Toybox or FagTag etc to decide to jump on the bandwagon and pfffftt
there goes MG's cash flow from any party.
They seem to like to keep things secret but thats just allowing promoters like Frisky to give advance notice and sell out.
I liked the idea of condensing the Festival but I just fear that this splitting the party over 2 weekends means MG will have to really compete with other promoters who give a lot of notice of when the next party is on.
I am hoping that there will still be a party on at Fox as you are all hyped from the Parade and you can go to a Club on Oxford St anytime but you dont want to be on Oxford St after the Parade with that crowd hanging around. So if they do put something on at Fox how big will the party be as you can bet it would be the most popular and the party the following weekends sounds like its just going to be for those in the Parade/Volunteers as they would have recovered by then. And how many can afford to do 2 party weekends ?
"Hey... where's the After Party" - will be a question on everyone's lips, not just overseas guests
All big events have an After Party- the Oscars is famous for the Elton John after party, the Logies, etc, etc.
It's a natural question these days- where's THE After Party? Having it a week later is maybe not such a good idea... by then the buzz is over. The only way to build up the buzz is to have Party BEFORE the parade perhaps. But once that parade's over... everyting's over the next day when people have lost interest.
The other option is have the parade on a Friday night, then have the party Saturday night, 24hrs later... that's stretching it... but a week later would definately be a buzz killer.
Good point here about the AGM, I am going to join NMG today and do my best to make sure they're voted IN.
I do hope most of the gay community is open to change. We have this little outstanding issue right now gaining momentum in the mainstream press referred to as Gay Marriage. The main argument used against the Christian Right-wing bigots being "Times Are Changing"
Find this interesting and has renewed my interest in the potential of seeing or even being in the parade, attending Harbour '10 as well as going to the Party at the end.
MG is not stupid. They have done heaps of research. And I'm sure they are also talking to some huge names and partners for the events between parade and party weekends, as well as the party itself.
What if they make it absolutely enticing on both weekends? Imagine they may have booked Fox for both weekends as well as the middle week. Putting a concert/mini-dance party in the Hordern to celebrate after the parade featuring big names like The Presets, Sneaky Sound System etc.
They may utilise the space once again say on Thursday night for another party.
Then reset the scene for a huge party Saturday night. Who knows, may be they'll partner with Toybox and outsource the Hordern for them to use and get top name DJs in like Armin van Buuren, Tiesto. Outsource the Dome for people who runs Action and Dirty. And concentrate on putting a camp, hand bag space in the RHI, but still with big name local and international DJs.
I'm only imagining all this. But it certainly sounds pretty enticing and it's all do-able. Particularly with increased funding.
As with international visitors, they are and have always been two types:
(1) Those who come for a longer period will still be here for parade and Harbour '10, then either stay the week to enjoy the festival or visit other cities, then back for the party the following weekend.
(2) Those who would really come down to Sydney Friday before the party and attend the party, recoveries, and back out on Monday. These will do the same.
Interstate visitors though will need choose. Do either weekend, or stay the whole time and do both.
No doubt there will be sacrafices that people will need to make but there are also benefits to those who might see this as opportunity to be more involved.
But no matter what, I for one, will be curious to see what unfolds.
With the greatest respect to our overseas and interstate visitors let me just emphasis what the name of this event is. It is the SYDNEY Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras.
The event PRIMARILY caters to Sydney people and those from out of town (while we appreciate their attendance) really are in the minority probably only representing about 10% of the people available to attend Mardi Gras events.
Decisions made by NMG are made to maximise the experience for the majority of punters. If this decision means a few hundred people from interstate miss out then so be it.
Congrats to NMG on a brave bold decision. I support it 100%
Hey Panther can we get one of those "this is the opinion of the poster" comments here?
I fully support NMG on this too, but the overseas & interstate visitors add a SERIOUS buzz to this event. I think the new format can accommodate our welcomed friends.
It will take a little adjusting but in time we'll all find a balance & enjoy the festival, which includes everyone wanting to pay to travel and come here to share it with us.
Of course if the gamble doesn't pay off there will be no more Mardi Gras. The party is the ONLY thing making any money so why put that at risk when it's taken the last 4 years to get Mardi Gras back on track?
It's only gonna be an "interesting" AGM if some new people get off their fat lazy asses and run against the existing board members at the AGM.
If I recall no vote occurred last year due to the appalling apathy of people in this city in not volunteering to do try and do the job themselves.
Get of the board's back you lazy assed anonymous nobodys. Nobody will ever take your comments on this wall seriously until you put your hand up and nominate your real name stating that you can do the job better.
No problem with a 2nd party the week after the Parade. Could even be a party for those in the Parade and volunteers and supporters and friends etc.
But not to have the big party straight after the Parade could be a big mistake. Lose that cash cow and we could lose MG again.
Its just ripe for letting other promoters getting in early and taking away punters from the MG Party. Not everyone wants to party weekend after weekend or so 2 or 3 parties etc.
Provided there is a party after the Parade thats not in an Oxford St venue, then I know my gang will be there. Already discussed what we will do and to wait a week after the Parade is not an option.
thank god. what a great move. finally nmg recognises that the parade people and the party people are different groups and can now put them on separate weekends so that everyone gets a great time. well done nmg. great idea. interested to find out more details of the "post parade event" though - rumour has it that it's for members only? if that's true, then it's fabulous! just like the old days! mardi gras is back on top! finally!!!
I think you have forgotten and perhaps the Focus Groups did too that us interstate and international "visitors" are a strong part of that $50 Million being pumped into the NSW and Sydney economy everytime we come!!!
This decision is history repeating itself! We almost lost Mardi Gras once and it seems we may have to dig it out of the ashes again if this goes ahead!!! Do you remember that ???
Whilst I agree that this decision is putting us in a position where we may lose MG again, I don't think that the Sydney nor NSW economy are any of our concerns. that's up to governments to look after and support.
the only thing we should be concerned about is MG itself.
Sorry to hear that dissapointed. But "visitors" will still come and spend, some will need to pick which weekend to come. Do we do the parade, the new event after parade and Harbour '10. Or do we come on the big party weekend and do the party and recoveries.
Or indeed, shall we come for a longer duration and span the two weekends.
Either way, the $50 million will still be spent, the spending will be more spread out. It'll also give promoters, bars, clubs, restaurants, hotels, tour groups etc. a chance to promote their businesses, events and packages between the two weekends.
Traditionally the strip (not that the strip is the only indication) is only busy with visitors from Thursday before Mardi Gras weekends. Now it'll be busy from the Friday before the parade to the Monday after the party. A whole 10 days worth of people going out. That's what I'll be thinking if I was a business owner targeting the gay community during the MG period.
So, you'll find there's going to be a lot more $ spent and a lot more buzz with the way the new scheduling works.
Some get 2 weeks ! and I doubt most would want to spend the 2 weekends in Sydney. They have always travelled around Australia or gone to NZ after the Parade and Party.
So there may not necessarily be more $'s spent. Just that
it will be spread out as people choose which weekend to stay in Sydney.
last time mardi gras went under was because it was being mismanaged. now NMG has tried something new, based on research, and we give them a hard time? come on...
let's face it, this is the most exciting thing that has happened to mardi gras in 10 years! normally none of us would be thinking about it at all right about now. the festival isn't for another 9 months or so!
the week is going to be fantastic. NMG is on notice that it's going to have to do something pretty damn special to justify the decision and I can't wait to see what they do. give them a break and trust them a little.
I recall being said that it is "Sydney" Mardi Gras and we are just visitors!!!
Well Honey! Our visitors are also members and we live both interstate and internationally !!! Therefore the NMG organisation needs to cater for and respect our needs as well!!!
We come, we volunteer and together we put this on! Why on earth would we do all that work for 2 whole weeks which is how long its going to take for a parade and party on different weekends.
Sorry volunteering takes enough out of me doing it for 1 week that the extended period just wouldn't happen!!!
Fair Go New Mardi Gras we are not Rio, we are Sydney and this is the way it's always been done!!! Why on earth would try to mess with something that is quite perfect just the way it is!!!
Got an email from NMG today acknowledging that they didn't consult members properly. In fact the only "consultation" they ever did was an online survey where it was apparent they had already made up their mind to split the parade and party apart.
Given that the party is the only event that turns a profit the Board needs to explain to members how they plan to protect that income stream should these changes result in a significant down turn in ticket sales.
Already alternate parties are announcing that they have moved their events to parade weekend so whats Mardi Gras' plan for a post parade event? Given their recent financial record I assume they have a plan yet in the email to members today they asked for our thoughts. Either they haven't got a clue or they do in fact already have a plan and are just stringing members along. You can't have it both ways.
I'm all for change if it is done responsibly but please don't treat members like idiots.
Its all great to offer up these ideas but they dont announce what the parties will be for those 2 weekends and look whats happened already.
Frisky has announced a party 27 Feb. Just needs another promoter or two to announce medium-large parties on and pfffftttt there goes quite a few thousand who would normally be going to the MH Party.
Odds on that the party that is put on after the Parade ends up being a large one anyway or if they downsize it , it will sell out.
Sure those in the Parade and volunteers are buggered after the walk but its sounding like the 2nd party will just be for them.
The buzz surrounding all day Sat , watching the news as they show people arriving etc , getting ready and going and watching the parade then walking out to Fox Studios has become a tradition ! why break with that tradition ?
Some posters seem to think that inter-state and internationals will just hang around. Why ? they are tourists and as pointed out by someone else some of them get only 2 weeks annual leave. Would you visit another country and just spend more than half your holiday in that one city ? most wouldnt so they its odds on they will still just choose the Parade and whatever party is on after then head off to check out the rest of the country.
Of course if NMG just announced exactly what they are going to put on for those 2 weekends there would hardly be any posts but as usual keeping it secret gets people stirred up. And the chance for other promoters to move in for the kill.
seems we are stuck with the changes for 2010 as SSO is reporting that fox studios isnt available on 28 feb and there are major sporting events on 7 march!
major stuff up on the part of NMG not to keep both dates open for themselves.
"Seems we are stuck with the changes for 2010 as SSO is reporting that fox studios isnt available on 28 feb and there are major sporting events on 7 march. major stuff up on the part of NMG not to keep both dates open for themselves."
Stop being so maliciuously misleading.
The two dates you have mentioned are SUNDAYS. There are ALWAYS major sporting events in the area on Sundays.
Our parties are on SATURDAY nights, not Sunday day (or night for that matter).
Fox might not be available on the weekend of Feb 27/28 but I bet we have it booked for the Saturday night of March 6.
But dont you think that anyone with a brain , especially the rumours about things over the last few years, would
announce exactly what they are doing and so stop posters
from guessing whats going to happen ?
Fair enough if they dont have the finer details but whats wrong with just saying after the Parade there will be a party held at .......................
For the weeekend after there will be another party held
at ......................
Least we can then make a decision about whether to buy tickets for Frisky instead because if they are not putting on a big party at Fox or similar then can assure you its Frisky here we come for my gang.
If they are going to do 2 cut down sized parties over those 2 weekends then really they will be no different to what others put on around the town.
Thats what was so great about the Mardi Gras weekend , huge Parade, huge crowds then leave Oxford St to the rabble and go to Fox for a huge party.
There is no Party that matches the Mardi Gras party for its sheer size and what they offer. I just hope that it
is still on after the Parade and thats its only a smaller
party on the following weekend.
but again if they just said so instead of keeping it secret they would not cop as much flak.
so, i hear kylie and madonna and cher are doing backing vocals to bete midler at mg. yay im so totaly there. its gonna be sooo cool. all my friends are goinf too. it will be very busy.
"but again if they just said so instead of keeping it secret they would not cop as much flak"
Here here. On one hand New Mardi Gras has emailed members calling for suggestions for a parade night party event and on the other David Imrie is quoted in this weeks gay'pers saying that they have been planning the event for months.
just saw the poster for the HCB bear event at the art factory.
Surely this is a bit of mis-leading advertising.
The DJ Charles they have mentioned on the poster is NOT the DJ Charles from Sydney who has played many den nights and other HCB events, but is a DJ from Melbourne who has not played for HCB before (as far as I'm aware).
Jonny from HCB is always quick to advertise HCB stuff on here so I'm hoping he sees this and does the right thing by the HCB members and both DJ's Charles.
You mean NMG have done something with Atlantis Cruises
as the ship arrives in Sydney 27 Feb and no-one bothered to check if Fox Studios was available so the covered
this up by saying they decided to split the Parade and
after Party ?
well, i actually was involved with one of the focus groups. there were about 30 of us and we were asked about it. it was through an email or something i think and i know we weren't the only group. i don't know about the 1500 though.
Seems like someone is quick to judge a HCB event yet nowhere have I seen it to say Charles is from or played in Sydney, or that he may be referring to a certain DBBC DJ.
I also think that if you're saying this as a way to make HCB look "mis-leading", you're scraping the barrel. Have you not heard of a misprint either, or that Charles might be a person with the same name and career? Where is this mis-leading advertisement? All I've seen of this DJ Charles to play at Bear Factory, is he has DJ'd at The Laird in Melbourne... sounds like a Melbourne Charles DJ to me!
On the facebook event there is an image of the poster and it simply say Charles. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't exist.
Considering the sydney Charles has played many times for HCB both at den nights and at events like last years Bears Are Dancing upstairs at the Shift and the 2008 Bear Essentials opening night, Underbear and boat cruise, it's reasonable to think it would be him.
By putting a (Melb) or something similar on the poster next to the DJs name, it would have indicated it’s not the Charles who is well known to HCB but someone different and avoided any confusion.
As for sydney Charles being a "certain DBBC DJ" what a load of crap. Charles, like any other DJ, plays where he is hired to do so and has played at the Flinders as well as DBBC. The two are not mutually exclusive.
Gees it's the guy's first name, I suspect there are 100 DJ Charles in the world. We have two DJ Josh's in Australia, they cope. Let it drop, this is ridiculous.
DJ Charles isn't bothered by this at all. This is just muck raking and shit stirring by some anonymous people who don't speak for me or Charles (he's my partner for those who don't know so i can speak for him).
Charles loves working for HCB and there is no issue or controversy between them.

NMG sent a member email announcing the new 2010 arragement and with a poll asking what performers you'd like to see at a NMG party.
There were no questions about what kind of after-parade soiree was desirable. It merely said that the after-parade even will be announced in coming months (without input)
"For now we would like your thoughts regarding the Parade Night Event. There are a number of options for this event which will be held at the culmination of the Parade on the 27th February. There is the opportunity to close this event to the general public and hold a member-only function. Please let us know your thoughts via email to feedback@mardigras.org.au."
Said inter-state friends want to do the Parade and the usual big party afterwards but they wont be able to stay the 2 weekends.
Sure the following weekend will be a big party but I just feel the atmosphere just wont be the same. No one in their Parade costumes walking around. The high they are on from doing the Parade etc.
Who is rich enough in these times to be able to do 2 weekends of parties or to go out 2 weekends in a row.
Actually there were 2 emails, so you're both (kinda) right.
The email announcing the changes was sent on May 20, and asked for input on performers via a survey. All it said about the post-parade event was "The first of these will be a parade night event which we will announce in the coming months".
It wasn't until the email of May 25 responding to the criticism about lack of member consultation that they asked for input on the event via an email link.
Without trying to sound too jaded/negative, when I looked at the performers survey it smacked of token consultation.
For the non-member readers of pinkboard, it was a huge list of every known artist from Elton John to J-Lo, Cher, Bette Midler, Barbra Streisand etc etc.
I wasn't sure if it was lifted from Woman's Day, but it was quite strange.
Perhaps after spending years chasing Olivia Newton-John, NMG started to wonder if it was worth trying to get certain performers when it would not increase ticket sales. The 30th Anniversary MG party would have sold out without her, and her 3 minute appearance was not worth the trouble in hindsight (although I'm sure it makes it easier to co-erce others to appear).
I have to agree with you. Some of the names on that list were indeed strange. It indeed feel like it was quickly whipped together by someone browsing through a gossip magazine looking for names. This whole affair seems to get stranger and stranger by the day.
I don't think the NMG email survey about party talent was strange at all. They obviously had to cover of a wide range of tastes to get a feel for which type of artists would drive ticket sales... and indeed if is was necessary to have big name artists at all.
I guess so, but the list of names was massive, and you had to make somewhat snap decisions whether their appearance at say Sleaze or Mardi Gras would make you buy a ticket.
I guess in a way we were all able to select those people whose appearance would make us NOT attend. Dolly Parton was one who got my vote.
A major act is a probable essential part of a party a week after the parade and certainly nothing we in Sydney would object to... The most important thing is that we embrace the change and support the party so that a 'serious' act can be afforded. Simple economics.
Well I just wish they would announce what they are going to do for a party on both weekends.
Is it
a) small party in a club somewhere after the Parade then
massive party as usual a week later.
b) 2 mid size parties each weekend ? and where.
I think most are going to have to make the decision on which weekend they are going . My friends have all said its going to be just the one weekend they will choose whether from simple economics or work.
How this has all been announced is strange but completely wrong by not saying what they are actually doing.
Personally I will be going to the biggest party and as for a big star.........got over that years ago. One or two songs usually seen from a distance but you lose a minimum of 1hr party time getting in, waiting, getting out and the crush can be unbearable.
Forget getting a so called top name artist to perform for 3 minutes - spend the money in getting three of the top dj's from os to play a whole set each in Dome, RHI and Hordern.
As for theme - 'History of The World' so antiquated, NMG should be looking forward and not backwards - hello it's a new centuary!!!
The party without the parade before hand will be crap. not the same vibe. So i'll only be doing the parade night party. And to be honest i think for me the festival will be over for me then, so don't think i'll be doing anything else in the festival after that. eg. films, theatre, shows etc.

Wow, It must be the first of June. The bitterness of winter has really kicked in.
I've gotta say, perfect day at the gaff was awesome yesterday. didnt make it on saturday ,but heard from some mates that it was good as well. definitely looking forward to going again this weekend.
Not bitterness ( unless you are talking about your own post ).
I totally agree.
The VIBE will be totally gone from the party if its held a week later. The way the Parade entrants all walk around in their groups with the clothes they had on, people taking the pics, talking to them not to mention the adrenaline high they and a lot of other people are on.
A week later all that vibe/adrenaline will be gone and it will just be like a Sleaze Ball.
"well the mardi gras goose is cooked as far as i can tell! what liars!"
mmmmm, have the courage of your convictions and sign your name. How can you be allowed to call people liars and get away with it?
Explanations have been given. Various stakeholders have been interviewed (again) and quoted (one assumes accurately being same same). As per the last line of the article:
"Imrie said that Mardi Gras would no longer comment on the matter, and that the issue was a “non-story”."
Move on kiddies. There are way more important discrimination issues like Nathan Rees getting into bed with Fred Nile to block gay adoptions.... real issues.
Agreed and well said NG. Let's hope some of the more vocal members of PB are as passionate about those causes as they are about the alleged MG "cover up".
That said, if the parade and party split falls on its arse then it's not likely to happen again in 2011.
There isn't anything anyone can do now to change what decisions have been made - all we can try and do is support those choices.
And really, at the end of the day, it's that what counts.
The NMG Board's decision to hold the Parade and Party a week apart is a decision which changes a fundamental element of Mardi Gras.
The Parade and Party have been held on the same night since 1982, and have provided a twin climax, the grand finale of the Mardi Gras Festival since 1985. This combination defines Mardi Gras for many people. Moreover, our community's ability to successfully stage the two events on the one night, at the end of a diverse Festival, which also includes Fair Day, the largest daytime gay and lesbian event in Australia, for over 20 years is a matter of pride for many lesbians and gay men.
This doesn't mean it has to stay this way forever. All events evolve, and there are often sound reasons for making changes. Any change to the fundamental nature should however recognise the GLBT community's ownership and investment in Mardi Gras. This means it should only be made after widespread and informed community debate. It should not be made in secret, behind closed doors, without prior public discussion, by a Board elected, if my memory serves me right, unopposed at a poorly attended AGM.
The decision has however been made, and as arrangements for next year's Parade and Party (venue bookings, liaison with government agencies etc) are already underway, if not set in stone, it may be difficult to reverse it. Moreover, overturning board decisions once they have been made may not be good corporate governance.
What is needed is a mechanism that ensures there is consultation and debate before such decisions are made in future. One way to achieve this would be to amend the NMG constitution to require the NMG Board to consult the NMG membership before any change to the fundamental nature or any of the fundamental elements of Mardi Gras is made.
The constitutional amendment would spell out what these fundamental elements are.
This could be achieved by inserting a new Division IV in the NMG Constitution entitled "Consultation with Members" which could read:
6.18 The Board must convene a General Meeting before adopting a resolution to:
(a) alter the primary focus of any of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade, Mardi Gras Party, Mardi Gras Festival or Mardi Gras Fair Day as gay, lesbian, transgender and bisexual events;
(b) change the nature of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade as a street event;
(c) not hold the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade;
(d) hold the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade at a location other than Oxford and Flinders Street, Darlinghurst;
(c) not hold the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade at night;
(d) hold the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade at any time other than on the last Saturday in February or the first Saturday in March;
(e) other than in 2010, hold the Mardi Gras Parade and Mardi Gras Party on separate nights;
(f) not hold a Mardi Gras Festival prior to the Mardi Gras Parade; or
(g) not hold a Mardi Gras Fair Day within in the four weeks prior to the Mardi Gras Parade.
6.19 The notice for such general meeting shall include a statement setting out the proposed resolution or resolutions and the reasons for the proposed resolution or resolutions.
6.20 The principal business of the general meeting shall be consideration of a motion in the form:
"This general meeting endorses the resolution or resolutions set out in the notice of this meeting, as required by Paragraph 6.19 of the Constitution of New Mardi Gras Limited."
This amendment would ensure that community discussion and consultation will occur before any change to the fundamental element of Mardi Gras is made - 6.18 (a)-(g) effectively lists these fundamental elements of Mardi Gras.
This is because 21 days notice must be given of any general meeting in writing to the members, and by advertisement in the Star Observer or other such similar publication that circulates within the gay, lesbian, transgender,
bisexual and queer communities.
Immediately this happens, the proposed change is made public, and can be reported, discussed and debated in bars, on websites, in the GLBT media etc.
When the general meeting is held, the members can show their support for the change by voting for the motion to endorse it, or show their opposition by voting against it.
The board could still go ahead with the change, even if the resolution to endorse it was lost. Its loss would not prevent the board from going ahead with the change if it believed it was justified. What is important is that the community debate will have taken place before the decision was made, and not afterwards.
Nor should the board fear this process. The most significant change to Mardi Gras - moving it from the end of June to the end of Summer - was made using a similar process.
The Mardi Gras Task Group (as it was then) convened three community meetings to discuss this and other changes to Mardi Gras - rather than believing it had the power to make the decisions itself. And while those meetings were robust, their outcome ensured that Mardi Gras never looked back.
People have to vent their frustrations at what has happened.
Its already f*cked my interstate friends.
They love the Parade and walking out to the Party afterwards. They cannot hang around Sydney for another week nor afford to fly back down the following weekend which many seems to think can be easily done.
And if we want to post on Nathan Rees and Fred Nile we can do that on the Equality Wall. I dont think either of them are Party people.
As previously stated - It's the SYDNEY gay & lesbian MG. It's a party for OUR city. If others who dont live in SYDNEY choose to visit us under OUR terms then thats swell. If they choose not to accept OUR terms and not come then tough titties. We'll do OUR party OUR way thank you very much.
For God's sake its 10 months away - interstate people have been given PLENTY of notice to organise, plan and budget a longer stay to accomodate both weekends if they CHOOSE to do so. The argument that interstaters cant hang around a whole week doesn't hold any water at all given the huge amount of time that there is until MG 2010.
Its simply a case of whingers putting up feable excuses for excuses sake.
So how many people whining about how the vibe at the party will be ruined because some parade participants wont be there in costume actually ever bothered going to the parade as well?
This too was my initial reaction but after talking to many parade participants who march I've realised there are two (maybe three) distinct crowds. There are those that attend or participate in the parade only, there are those that attend the party only and there are some that attend both (but perhaps not for the whole length).
Imagine what a difference to the atmosphere of the parade this change will make. The floats and marchers have been superb the last two years but adding another ten thousand or so gays and lesbians to the crowd will make it utter magic.
And I like the colour that the parade participants bring to the party but there are many factors that create a good vibe. Personally I found the crowd at the last party one of the pushiest I've ever experienced. I reckon it's got a little rough and if this change means that the drunken d'head straight tourists stay away then bring it on. The vibe at the party WILL change and I predict it will be for the better!
For many many years now we've got used to the parade then after party formula. Perhaps it's time to expand our view of what Mardi Gras can be. In Brazil Carnival goes for an entire week... an entire week of parades and parties. Imagine that.
and to counter that so called 10,000 extra party attendees will be those for example who arrive on the Gay Cruise on 27 Feb expecting there to be a Parade and Party who now only get the Parade.
Will they all be able to afford to pay for another weeks accommodation ? afford to change their air bookings which nowadays have very heavy change fees involved. And dont forget places like America some only get 2 weeks holidays so with the Cruise and the Parade they have to go back as they have run out of holidays.
I can just see the Party the week after being no different to Sleaze Ball.
That vibe/adrenaline rush everyone is on from the Parade will be lost.
I cant believe the stupidity in some of these posts.
They will just have to stay longer.
They have plenty of time to save so can stay another weekend in Sydney.
If they dont like it then tough.
Putting on a week later will mean another ten thousand.
Would life be just great if you had plenty of holidays to spare, plenty of $'s to spend and be able to do all that.
And just what is wrong with posters complaining about breaking up a traditional thing that has been done for over 20 years ?
I just hope there is a vibe to the party a week later and just hope there are 15,000 - 20,000 people who attend otherwise we are heading for another NMG collapse.
It will split people up in what we do. We may all not work 9-5 but the majority are not party goers who go out everyweekend either. You see faces at MG that you only see once a year now. Frisky has offered up a party on 27 Feb , lets see who else does and will those people want to or be able to afford to do 2 party weekends in a row. For a lot of us its not cheap.
I'll guarantee that if the parade and party had been on separate weekends for 20 years and NMG announced they would co-incide on the same night, the same whingers would be up in arms.
There is a core of people who will resist/hate change no matter what it is.
As we all know the party (plus sponsorship) is what keeps New Mardi Gras afloat.
Splitting parade and party represents a highly risk commercial gamble, splitting the events is likely to reduce party attendance (and hence revenue) as many people, especially out-of-town visitors will choose one event or the other. Parade is the lighthouse event - there can be no doubt that a significant number of people will choose Parade over party - and NMG revenue will be impacted.
The current management and board of NMG have adopted this high risk strategy wihout due consultation or transparency. The CEO and Board have put their heads on the chopping block - do we demand blood now or do we wait and hope that this enormous gamble will pay off?
The handling of this decision by David Imrie to date has me reaching for the axe....
Those of us who are worried this split in Parade and Party could be a problem should just shut up and accept it and not air our concerns. After all 20 years is evidence enough it did work.
Lets just hope enough people do come to whatever party NMG do put on otherwise we could end up with no NMG again.
I just love the short sightedness with some peoples posts about how people will just have to do the 2 weekends. How they have plenty of time to budget to stay longer. How they have endless holidays they can just use to stay the extra week.
Lets just hope you are right and that it does work.
On The Star Observer forum for their article 'Mardi Gras Promises New Party' there have been accusations of bias against Pinkboard and perhaps SX:
"Damian said, June 3rd, 2009 @ 11:52 pm
It’s quite clear that “Pinkboard” are backing these changes rather than allowing comments that speak against the changes and how to change them to be posted!
Thanks Star Observer for allowing us to freely voice our opinions on this important issue!!!
Dan said, June 4th, 2009 @ 1:03 pm
Interesting comment from Damian… I too posted a mildy negative comment to Pinkboard and it did not make the cut. Is the debate being censored?
SX also seems to be full of praise - the list of support from NMG notables read like a scripted advert."
I have replied as follows:
"Given the above accusations, it is interesting that, in the last two issues of The Star Observer, ALL the published letters have been totally negative, even vitriolic.
Does this mean The Star Observer has not received one positive letter over the last two weeks? I know of at least two letter writers who indeed sent positive feedback to The Star Observer and neither was published. Or is there perhaps a bias at The Star Observer as some would accuse Pinkboard and SX?
We are used to owner or editorial bias in our mainstream media – compare The Daily Terror to SMH, for example.
If so, in this case, that’s fine. It should just be declared so that readers are not under the impression that there is ONLY negative reaction in the community. Quite simply, there isn’t. You just have to read everything to get balanced information and views."
This has yet to be moderated by The Star Observer and I'll be pleasantly surprised if it is posted on the forum.
I imagine that the postings here are sometimes rejected for good reasons but do think that this forum has generally been fair to all points of view on this, and most, issues.
i am aware that the people who assist in moderating this forum will often choose to refer a post that is 50/50 to Panther to make the final decision. When an item is referred it sits as an unpublished post until Panther logs on and reads it. He then makes the final call and releases it for everyone to read or deletes it.
If a post is released to be read by everyone it will be filed on this page at the time it was originally posted. This can sometimes place the post a long way back from the most recent post, and to some this appears that the post was never published at all.
Of note to all is that Panther is overseas on holidays at the present time. I'm sure you all dont expect him to be sitting online checking pinkboard all the time while he is on holidays
Please read the other article I posted on that website 27/05/09 too. My postings on Pinkboard have been rather similar calling for due democratic process and proper consultation regarding these changes. That’s all!!!
If we can't have that, then real changes need to occur at a management level...
I draw your attention to the amount of comments on the SSO website, both negative and positive.
Furthermore please note the poll (a form of market research) conducted on that website and you will find that a significant majority of our community reject these changes.
This is my opinion, it does not attack anyone personally however simply states one side of an argument.
And Damian, as expected, my post on the Star Observer forum was not put up this morning (and is no longer pending). Maybe it's still being moderated. At least it's here.
Notably, a poll on a biased website will always be skewed by what the people reading that website are shown as fact - think Daily Telegraph polls most of the time after a one-sided presentation... Unfortunatley, polls like this mean very little.
More importantly, how many of those mouthing off are actually, or have been since its inception, members of New Mardi Gras? The involvement and credibility of those being given all that much printing ink should at least be tested. This is 2009 afterall. Dont' you think that would be fair?
Conspiracy theories, accusations of stuff ups... it goes on and on untested. At least 'same same' interviewed the Venue Manager and printed the fact that Mardi Gras has a 3 year year contract in place (from 2008) for its respective date. The promoter for the Antique Roadshow also confirmed that they have a multi-year contract for their date. Unfortunately, these comments were not tested by our community newspaper and clarifications printed.
There was also a link to a development application to the Council made in February this year regarding the Parade specifically noting the date of February 27th, 2010. Unfortunately, this fact was not checked by our community newspaper and clarifications printed.
It is apparent to me, and I have asked the questions directly, that the split was 'planned' at least 3 months ago. Hardly a conspiracy or cover up? The information was always out there to check before going to print.
The timing of announcing such things is always the right of the Board and management. I do agree that more consultation with the direct membership (the main stakeholders) would have been preferable and have expressed that. But, simply, it's done now, and unless people want the whole Parade and Party scrapped, we should embrace the concept and look at the new opportunities it offers.
I certainly wasn't attacking you and it appears you do get fair posting here by your reply last night. I was purely commenting on the accusations of bias in a place that is obviously being totally biased. Sorry if you didn't realise that. At least we can now all see that through this forum.
Star Observer is a disgrace. You cant half tell they aren't getting advertising revenue from Mardi Gras. Three letters being highly critical of NMG in each of the last 2 issues and not one single letter to counter the opposite viewpoint. I wrote to SSO with a letter of support for NMG but it never saw the light of day. My flatmate also wrote a letter of support, another one bit the dust. One of my work mates says he also wrote to them & yet again , nothing to be seen !
At least SX provided letters for AND against this debate.
Given that Damon's letter online to SSO seems to also have been binned it now goes without saying that the credibility of star observer is in the toilet , where it belongs.
I wouldn't rate star obsever worthy of wrapping my fish & chips after this episode.
Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm is this your Post Noisy Gypsy?

Interesting my Star post went up AFTER it was posted here. It has been inserted between two posts that were there (without my one) this morning when I posted here....the time stamp is when it was sent, not when it was put on the forum. Ho hum, how bloody boring and disappointing. And, unfortunately, transparent.
And also, NOT all letters to the Star have been published. Was their deadline two weeks ago for last week's edition? We think not. FYI, some people have bcc'd themselves, and others, with their letters of support to prove transmission.
We live in hope that the Star Observer will show us some journalistic standards by checking with Playbill, the Antique Roadshow, City of Sydney Council and print a clarification (should be an apology to NMG for not checking facts first but doubt that will happen) in next week's edition. If Christian can do this at 'same same', there is no reason why the Star journos can't.
It really isn't that hard to say "Sorry, we didn't check our facts after listening to a non-member of New Mardi Gras and believing it all as the gospel".
Oh, and finally print the supportive letters sent over the last fortnight...
I love having a continued belief that people will do the right thing in this world.
Interestingly enough NG I posted that same link on Pinkboard before I posted it on SSO and it was not deemed worthy of publication. Whilst I absolutely defend Panthers right as the publisher I do feel that your vent at SSO is unwarranted. Re the update on SSO about dates, it seems that Atlantis were under the impression until a few weeks ago that parade and party would be on the same night. As recently as late January NMG staff were confirming parade AND party on 27 February via email enquiries. Overseas friends have booked and paid for flights and accommodation.
what garbage. why when the party venue was booked in 2008 for 6 march 2010 and the parade was advertised on the nmg website for 27 february 2010 would "nmg staff" have been advising anyone both events were on the same date? just for their jollies? get real folks.
so wonder how many bought cruise tickets thinking they would be here for Parade and Party on the same night ?
note the gaytravedestinations still says Parade and Party etc
of course there are not plenty of sites with the new dates but there has been a lot of confusion so where did this confusion start from ?
I'm not sticking up for either side but when you read comments like "what garbage" its easy to find websites that have not been updated with the latest change. How many of those sites with the correct dates also had the wrong dates ?
This is factually incorrect as the Parade and Party were advertised on NMG website as both happening on 27th Feb until the recent announcements when it was then changed!
In the interest of some community harmony can you please check your facts before posting items like these...
It would have been nice if NMG emailed members with the Sleazeball theme. Why bother paying a membership fee if NMG cant even inform the membership that supports the organisation. You think Imrie and Co. would have learnt from the past few weeks - hence not!
i've been in the parade 2 times and was exhausted at the end ....went to the party and went home early...splitting them up is a great idea - i think its a great opportunity for the gay community to reclaim the parade - lets face it most guys under 40 avoid it - this year we watched it on TV with 6 other gay guys and it was fun yet they need to get rid of alot of the tired old trucks with a few boys on the back Gays from woop woop floats and tired old entries like the dykes on bikes.
I really think this is a move to try and save the parade from certain death - its not relavent to young guys and this might get them interested
Good on NMG for having some balls and a big finger to the community types who are up in arms
cheers
Stephen Kidman
So many people in the Parade say its a good thing for them to have the Party a week later so they can attend.
Well lets hope the number of parade entrants who do go the party outnumber those who decide to just pick one weekend out of the two. Something will miss out.
The main thing I will miss at the Party is all those people walking around in their costumes. Will you still wear yours ? The hype/adrenaline/vibe after the Parade at the Party.
I just see this new party as no different to Sleaze Ball.
And I truly dont understand your comment about trying to get the over 40's to come to the Parade. After about half a dozen of them it becomes boring to be honest. Not for all but certainly my group is not interested in it anymore and just go to the party. We will still go to the Party but wont be bothering with the Parade no matter when its on. Not sure how you expect to attract those people , its a case of been there done that 5 or 10 times and so we save ourselves for the party.
Lets hope Mardi Gras' so called balls and big finger survive cause if this experiment doesnt attract a lot of people to whatever parties they do put on then we could end up with no Mardi Gras again.
Already Frisky is advertising so lets hope no other promoters decide to jump in before NMG has announced what they are going to do.
I'm all for Mardi Gras trying out new ideas and concepts to keep things fresh and exciting. However I am a bit concerned at the shortening of the festival. One of the things I have always loved about MG is that it is not just a parade and party as many people in the wider community think but it is also (until now) a whole month of gay plays, theater and art. It was a festival which consumed the city for the month. I'm concerned that the focus will now just be on the dance parties. We need Mardi Gras to be more than that and we don't want the general public thinking that we're just about partying. How will people have time to see all the plays, movies and other events now?
Best of luck to Mardi Gras though and despite my concerns I hope it all works out well and good on them for trying some new ideas
"It is apparent to me, and I have asked the questions directly, that the split was 'planned' at least 3 months ago."
But... umm... wouldn't that mean they made the decision *before* they sent out the survey email to members on March 26 (which was when I received mine)? I sincerely hope that's not the case, as this would imply the survey was just seeking to build justification for a decision that had already been made.
:This is factually incorrect as the Parade and Party were advertised on NMG website as both happening on 27th Feb until the recent announcements when it was then changed!"
Actually this is not true. Ever sice NMG first posted the 2010 dates on their website there was no mention of party. The Feb 27th date was listed as the date of the parade and the usual "and party" wording was omitted.
I remember thinking that this was strange at the time but from the survey they sent members asking about their opinion on a number of festival related issues including a split parade / party arrangement I just assumed they were still considering changing the dates.
I don't think there is any incompetence or conspiracy going on. Whether it turns out to be a stroke of genius or not depends how we all decide to support it.
Just back from Frisky set-up. Looks great with all sorts of camp effects this time. The vocalists are awesome - even I got goose bumps. Should be a great night.
the parade may have been the biggest ever, but the party is the major fundraiser. it the party doesn't turn a decent profit then everything else dies with it (except formost of the festival which is NOT funded by NMG ie. film fest, plays, art shows, etc).
What has happened to "The Gay Scene" these days? It's rather bizzare coming back from o/s to a gays scene where there is no major party on long weekends and the clubs are only just ok. Friends are telling me that more and more guys are simply entertaining at home. This way you play the music you want and do what you want.
For my 2 cents worth... If the parade and party will be held on sepertae occassions, it may not be a good idea.
If you went to the parade (and if u were a participant), and u were all dressed up for the event and had the option to buy a ticket to a major dance party put on by a private promoter for that same evening, wouldn't you be tempted to attend that party, to save you having to wait and do it all over again the following week?
If MG rely heavily on dance party income, then wouldn't this be disastrous?
Not being negative, just looking at it purely from a financial angle
"The parade and party were listed on the website even after Mardi Gras 2009."
This is definately not true. Only the parade date was ever listed. I know because I check the website often and was wondering why they were not mentioning the party.
"Can you provide more information about what you are referring to? Survey??? I am curious and would like to know the details"
The email containing the survey was sent to members on the 25/3/09. It started with the following text "A big thank you to all of those who participated in, watched or in any way supported the 32nd Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras. We had a great time putting it on and we hope you had a blast. A particularly big thank you to the volunteers who made the season possible and our sponsors who play a big part in making Mardi Gras a reality. There was always a danger that after the 30th Anniversary we'd suffer a bit of a hangover, but we're glad to say that this year saw the momentum continue in almost every way. Next year will be bigger and better still. You can help us do it by completing our survey."
Frisky is putting on a party Parade weekend. All it will take is for Toybox and clubs to shove on a pile of after parties and people will go as the who Parade thing gets you hyped up , you just cant go home.
So who will have the $'s , the inclination to go a week later ?
I have friends who have already said that they will go to the Party a week later and wont be bothering going out on the Parade weekend
but
if the party a week later is a cut down version no different to Sleaze etc then they will look at whats on after the Parade.
Just waiting on NMG to actually announce what they will be putting on - where and when.
What venues has this Gift Fair booked ? usually those events only have 1 hall so here's hoping there will be something on at Fox for after the Parade in a few of the other venues.
Thank you to the Frisky team for an awesome party. Shame about the police interference but the crowd, the vibe, most of the entertainment, the music, the lights were all great. After the Mardi Gras Frisky was wondering whether this party was dead. Glad I went with my mates and gave it another chance. Shame we have to wait till January.
What an amazing party, Mark Alsop, DJ Man and Troy Cox you guys were fantastic and rocked the place. HCBears and The Clarence great job, When do we get Chunky 4?
yeah I didnt see any police at all. All we got was a brief pat-down by security at the door and didnt have to empty our pockets.
Much better Frisky this time. Improved music, all uplifting and irresistable beats.
The vocalists in the smaller room were a knockout as were the DJ's.
Effects and lighting were also turned up several notches and there were lasers at the back pointing towars the floor (previously the lighting was only from the front).
Bubble and snow machines were a nice addition, adding some fun without being overdone.
Bar service was fast and very friendly.
The fact that there were still 200 tickets at the door ensured no overcrowding and it was definitely a good thing.
I hear the October party had to be called off, but definitely attending the next, well worth the $94
WOW What a party. Thanks to all for a fantastic day. The best crowd for years at any party. The awesome music, great venue and security personnel.(no attitude security, a lot of venues can learn a lot from these guys.
Homesexual definitely did not sell out despite their usual over-hyped claims of "tickets selling fast" and "final tickets remaining". Both the silver room (or whatever they call it now) and the terrace bar were closed for the night and the second level was closed down pretty early.
The crowd was VERY twinky ... I missed the usual mixed crowd but the young'ins did look rather cute in their school uniforms.
Kitty Glitter had the crowd going in her usual glam style. Yinon Yahel, the [insert your favourite relationship here] of Offer Nissam, started well but his music quickly became rather unenergetic and dull... not bad but not fun either.
I think the problem with the event is that the venue has been re-configured so much it's become ugly, the marketing is continually over-hyped and the international DJ's just don't stack up.
It's getting to the stage where if you have an overseas address that you run a good chance of getting asked to DJ at this event - even if you aren't a DJ !
the other parties? did anyone go to dirty, dpm, after dark, for a quiet weekend there was a lot on. i thin we are more spoilt for choice than we think we are.
"...a good chance of getting asked to DJ at this event - even if you aren't a DJ"
LOLOLOL
but seriously.
sounds like you were there. that means the "hype" is working. i stopped going because it became twinky very faaast. also the intergalactic mega uber massive yahelnissimmoroncraphofer.whatever.dj.com make me rather run away than buying a ticket. this event died for me years ago.
after a great time at big queen rising, we went down to the gaff for perfect day. what a GREAT way to end the weekend! music was spot on all day, there wasn't a moment when the crowd wasnt going nuts. who were the DJs? i think mark alsop was on early on.
This was the party to be at. Could not believe how many hot guys & girls were in this venue. The music was great (well done to all the DJs) I agree the staff & security were unreal & the crowd were awesome. Had the best time ever (yes better than Toybox or any Mardigras) Thanks to all for a most memorable experience.
Yes, the Phoenix Rising at the Q bar was very special indeed. The place was packed! We had a great time. Hot guys, great venue, fantastic music, nice staff. All that for $20!!!
We were also at the Frisky.. Mmm.. not so sure the party will last much longer, with nearly $100, JoJo's set was not good. Very patchy with no rhythm, very hard to dance with. The party was saved by Ric, well done Ric for yet another fantastic set. But only played for 3 hours. What was that foam thing?? Trying to look like snow?? It was bad, somewhat tacky.
When is the next Rising @ the Q bar? We are so there!
Has anyone heard any news if NMG will be getting any other international DJs other then Sammy Jo? I hope they get someone who plays the dirty and darker sides of music rather than electro....
Fingers crossed.
What an awesome party. Hot crowd & love the sandstone interior. Very den-like. Scott Pullen's set to start the night was solid, dirty tech house. Mandy & Feisty delivered as always. Great party!
Did anyone notice that the Editor of the Star Observer went back on his word to publish all letters regarding the Party/Parade split (including those that were positive) in this week's edition? Guess we get left with a exposed biased paper. Sad.
Some friends in Brisbane last month told me about teh White Wolf party that they have up there every few monthes for guys only and as to how good it was. So last weekend I flew up for it and yes it was brilliant. It starts at 4pm and by 7pm was packed and remained that way until midnight when it closed. Not sure why it closed then but may have been due to the liscence of the venue. It was wall to wall men with their shirts off and even a few dicks being flaunted on the dance floor. The DJ was Les Smith who I have heard at Toybox but his set was completely different to Toybox. It was full of anthems and some remixes of songs that I have never heard along with some of the latest dance tracks. I am not sure if they are his own work or not but if they are he is brilliant. Nothing was too dark or heavy but was exactly what the crowd craved. He had the crowd on the dance floor in the palm of his hand. It was amazing sight to see. Another local DJ called Corey was playing the earlier set and he was almost as good. I will certainly come back to Brisbane for their next one. I am still up here for a couple of more days before I come back to Sydney as I am going to their Pride Fair day on Saturday but I hope to hell that it warms up as it is very cold.
i just found out they are splitting the party/parade. I'm dating a guy long distance and planned to fly him over for the event. I was so looking forward to taking him to parade and party. Problem is he can't get enough time off to cover both weekends, so we have to pick one. I'm sure alot of people are in the same boat. NMG is supposed to unite not divide!!
A lot of people from other countries only get 2 weeks leave and spend 3-5 days in Sydney then either another part of Australia or NZ or like the boys coming in on the Atlantis Cruise. They dont want to waste all their holidays in just one city so will choose one of the weekends.
If the internationals are only here for the Parade so be it. With all the Parade entrants and many volunteers that never get to the Party due to sheer exhaustion, there should be plenty to make a good time. In fact, without a lot of attitude, it could be a much warmer, truly Sydney party, that many have been wanting for years.
Yeah I agree. How about we don't broadcast comments like this overseas or interstate. If I was thinking about travelling to Sydney for Mardi Gras and I saw that I'd think "you guys enjoy your LITTLE festival because I won't be there". Hopeless.
People love doing the party after the Parade. It hypes everyone up and they want to continue on so if NMG does not have anything decent on ....... well people will go to the clubs or other party promoters party's.
Its not a case of not supporting NMG its a case of being out watching the Parade etc and who wants to go home at
10pm ? not many.
Lets hope that Sydney people feel like going out the following weekend. Look at the numbers Sleaze get when its just a party on a weekend. The whole Parade thing just rolls everything along. Numbers at the Party have
been getting better over the last few years. The Parade is a great feeder for the after Party.
The following weekend has nothing to hype up or feed people to the Party.
Of course if NMG would just announce what they are doing it would stop all the guessing. We can then make up our minds but while they dont tell us, Frisky have already launched a Party on after the Parade.
The fact is sydney is quite a fickle bunch and move towards what ever new fads or latest trends which is sad, sometime mardi gras where the brunt of this.
Not everyone is as shallow as the sydney whole community which is starting to become more minimal, and the rest of the n"normal" people balance out the ego's sydney attracts.
I'm from sydney but what the F@#$ as a gay community we do not do ourselves justice and support our own community.
Parties like mardi gras etc will be lost by sheer greed of corporate wankers willing to break up the mardi gras festivalk and capitlise in on the pink dollar.
I'm all for competition, but remmeber mardi gras was established for a reaosn and I still think unforunately we have a long way to go!
Support our community rather than bitching about every thing !!
If I was an international with one week I would: Fly into Sydney. Do the parade. Fly to somewhere else for 3-5 days. That is an ideal time to see Uluru or the reef. Fly back to Sydney. Do the party. Fly home.
you can sugar coat the senario that you like - the reality is that most international and interstate visitors will only come up for one weekend.
here's my reasoning:
as the atlantis cruise is docking the weekend of the parade - and there is clearly going to be a harbour party and some other privately run events around the parade - i know i am going up on that weekend and that weekend only.
it makes financial sense for me to do that and allows me the time off to do it.
also, my perception at ths point in time is that on that weekend i get to experience buzz of the parade and parties all on the same weekend with the hottest guys.
You'll be surprised. Plenty of boys fly in Saturday morning and leave Monday night. And not everyone has a 14-hour flight, you forgot that there are plenty of local and expat boys living in Asia.
The last time I flew out of Sydney on the Monday after Mardi Gras back to LA I slept better than ever before on a long haul flight. We do have drugs to bring us down you know. The new idea is great. Into Sydney on the Friday February 26th, for the Parade, get a tan during the week (coming from end of winter), then party, then home on the Monday. All in 12 days with travel time and a day to prepare for back to work. Not hard at all.
most only get 2 weeks so why visit Sydney twice ? and the 2nd time just for a party ? when they can go to their own parties overseas anytime ? not like our Party is the only one in the world. The whole Parade is an International thing. So I can just see a lot of Internationals picking the whole Parade weekend, partying at whatever is available then moving on to visit other parts.
No matter what you say or how many Parade entrants say they will go to the Party , it will make people choose one or the other whether the constraints are holidays or
the cash or simply they cant/dont want to go out 2 weekends in a row.
Of course there will be people who will do both weekends. From my group of friends it will definately be only one of the weekends. If there is something decent on after the Parade then we will be doing that and passing on the following weekend. If nothing decent on after the Parade then we wont go out that weekend but will save the $'s and just do the Party. Talking to a lot of friends/workmates they are saying the same thing. Cant afford to do 2 weekends in a row so will choose one when we finally get to hear whats on offer.
If your "Plenty of boys fly in Saturday morning and leave Monday night" holds true again, it will just show that the internationals aren't at all interested in the 'Parade one weekend, Party the next' format.
NMG may have been wiser to have first trialled an afternoon Parade and usual evening after Party, if it really believed there were thousands of Parade participants that were too tired to make it to the Party. Plenty of other cities have their Pride Parade in the afternoon.
I guess there will be plenty of tickets available for these thousands of rested up Parade participants if the internationals are a no-show.
Lots of varying opinions about whether splitting parade and party is a good idea. Great to hear a variety of opinions. Personally, as someone from interstate who has come to MG every year since 1994, I have prepared for a HUGE weekend, attending the parade as a spectator, and going to the party afterwards. I have managed, over the last few years, to wangle a secret long weekend so have Monday to recover. Not sure how I am going to manage in 2010, as I want to be able to do both, but CANNOT have the week off work between.
Whatever happens, it's going to be up to the Sydney crowd to make or break these events, because you are the ones with easiest access to both. Many of us will have to choose. I hope that, as a community, the 'will I or won't I' discussions will be put aside next year, and everyone decides to get out there and support both parade and party, so that both can continue. And then voice your opinion, for or against, in very clear terms to MG committee. This way, whether it's decided to keep them separate or join them the following year, at least both of them have been successful enough in 2010 for both to continue.
From your brothers and sisters (and good girlfriends) from outside the city limits, come on Sydney. Make 2010 work! We'll love you forever!
The Pride Parades held overseas are usually during the afternoon and those I've attended were pretty ordinary. A lot of politicians sitting in convertibles waving at bored families standing at the side of the street.
The thought of Sydney's Parade format changing scared me a little so I checked NMG's website and it says "Mardi Gras Parade will take place on the night of Saturday February 27th along its familiar route in Darlinghurst. A major post-Parade event has been planned for that night and will be announced in the coming months."
Obviously NMG's recent announcements were going to shake up the community. I'm happy to give them a go. And EVERYONE is welcome, the more oveseas/interstate visitors the better. Pick your favourite weekend or stay the full week - we'll keep you busy - just book your holiday and come have a great time. Sydneysiders should have a lot of the bickering out of our system(s) by then.
Hey, as just an idea, we could pull together and be a little pro-active to help make 2010 the best Mardi Gras yet?
The 2am lockout has nothing to do it. Oxford Street and the gay scene were in decline well before these new laws came into place. But yes you can blame alcohol fueled violence and the legions of unfriendly wasted people who descend on Oxford Street every weekend. It's no wonder gays don't want to mix with that anymore. Trying to blame the 2am lockout is a bit of a joke

The clumsy, badly thought-out NMG changes will mean less visitors from both O/S and interstate, reducing it's regional and international significance. There'll be less tourist dollars for Sydney. As a result MG could see a decline in it's status over time making it less attractive for sponsors and harder to justify government assistance.
And all this while earning less from party tickets will make it more dependant on that Govt & commercial sponsorship. It's reliance on party ticket sales has meant that it's funding has been from within the gay and lesbian community, enhancing its independence.
There are other options for change that don't negatively affect the ability of so many people to participate (namely: visitors, festival participants and people who like to party as part of parade night festivities). A party for members, volunteers and others affected by parade exhaustion could be held on the Sunday of parade weekend or the following Saturday. The events planned for between parade and party weekends would be better held in the week leading up to the main parade where they would increase anticipation and excitement for the main parade instead of taking focus away from the main event.
Overseas Mardi Gras parades usually have a month of gradually increasing festivities leading up to the main Mardi Gras period. The build up is a vital part of what creates the good vibe on the night. Many overseas Pride celebrations also include a month long festival leading up to their Pride parades (eg San Francisco and Chicago Pride). Something that Mardi Gras and Pride parades around the world overwhelmingly have in common is a party on the night of the parades.
Partying is a key ingredient of Mardi Gras around the world. A party atmosphere is present on the street amongst the participants and crowds watching them. With the official party suddenly out of the line up of Parade night the atmosphere will be changed, becoming less of a party/celebration event for many in the Gay & Lesbian community.
The most consistent criticism I hear about MG is that it has lost much of the humour, wit, flamboyance, creativity and basic sense of being a performance that had been integral to its history and success. The balance between being a Pride type march and a Mardi Gras has shifted too far towards the worthy but less exciting or original Pride march side of the event.
These changes look set to further that trend by:
*taking away a dramatic sense of climax provided by having parade & party together on the final weekend of a month of festivities.
*taking away the party part of Mardi Gras night itself when a party atmosphere is a very important part of what makes up a Mardi Gras. People have said they prefer to party while on a high from the parade and that is the experience. That is what they have been able to do for more than 20 years and it is what happens around the world at both Mardi Gras and Pride celebrations. In Sydney and elsewhere it means seeing people in their parade outfits, meeting visitors & gathering with friends to celebrate under the umbrella of the Mardi Gras itself.
*Taking the some of the focus of efforts away from the main parade to smaller events which will have to have original content to attract people in the wake of the main event
The current NMG board was elected unopposed at a poorly attended AGM. There was not debate about these changes at the time and for most stakeholders there has been no consultation or opportunity to object. They are the wrong changes to make, unnecessarily making it more difficult for many to participate as they have for a long time. It could have been done another way and now its left for all of us who want a better outcome to join up to MG, if we haven't already, and attend the next AGM to vote in another board.
Oh and just before people claim they weren't consulted I received a Mardi Gras members email today with another survey... this time asking for suggestions about headline acts for Festival.
Members should check your inbox... and don't say they don't ask your opinion!
Saturday 20th, Launch Of Pride Weekend. DJ line up, Mark Alsop (MA+) 12-3pm, DJ Chip 3pm-5.30pm, DJ Man 5.30pm. Upstairs Dan Pearce. Special live performance by Aria Beautiful at 2.30pm and 5pm. Part of door proceeds going to Positive Life NSW. Show your support, show your Pride!
You're joking if you think you can charge $15 entry like I was today, and claim to donate 20% to charity, isnt the door normally $10? you're making more profit!
Hey Guys, what is everyone's view on DJs "mixing/creating there work" verses "just downloading & pressing play"?
There seems to be a crop of new DJs that dont seem to actually put in any real work, and take the easy way out and are actually just a kareoke machine/juke box.
Agree that daytime parades are a very bad idea and so not Mardi Gras. It is the nightime schedule that sets it apart from other (much duller) daytime Pride parades.
On the point about interstaters and internationals doing the Parade and not the Party, I disagree. Let's face it - most internationals come here because of the opportunity to get wasted and get laid and both of these are crucially about the Party, not the Parade. The Parade is just an added extra to what's become a major global circuit party event. (Although I know there are some interstaters rather than internationals who more come for the Parade.)
Either way, I think both events will survive just fine. Then the two can be put back together the following year!
There's two types of DJs out there, Producer/Djs and DJs.....all the DJs on oxford street are typical DJs only.....Dan Murphy/Luke Leal/Greg Boladian etc.....but they produce on the side.....Not sure what you mean by "just downloading & pressing Play" ? they all mix in which does take a lot of skill.
For me some DJ's get too wrapped up in themselves and some can just sound the same over and over again. The so called journey ( for me ) gets quite boring.
I love it when a song I have heard comes on and is played the way I hear it or at least one of the many mixes you also hear. And I love it when they mix a few styles that compliment each other eg tribal with dirty sexy house etc.
Think you'll find most DJs don't create/produce their own work but instead mix others' tracks - which in itself takes years of dedication and time and patience to perfect. It's not easy by any stretch. And it's not just beat matching - it's knowing the right time to mix, selecting the right tracks, reading the music, knowing what it going to sound well and what won't.
But if you're saying that only the greatest DJs are the ones who write their own music and produce it, then I'm going to disagree... certainly not true.
I think you will find $15 is the standard cover charge now. The DJs and the other staff need to be paid. Chris tried to keep the cover charge low but putting an event is not cheap and I think you will find that $15 was the cover charge on the June long weekend.
What is coming put of Perfect Day's pockets are the staff costs eg DJs, other entertainers, Doorman, security and advertising. The ad on SX cover is not cheap. As mentioned in earlier post was the cover charge went up the week before so what is the issue? The charities have also benefited by more money!
Subjective topics like this are difficult. I'm no DJ but "fake" or whatever, it doesn't matter.
Choosing the right music and seamlessly mixing it in/out is the trick. Even the length of the tracks are a consideration, to me.
More adventurous DJ's who succeed at the above, may also drop in samples and layer two tracks together. When done correctly, that's what I would call an art form.
What's the point of a well-produced sound by a "real" DJ if the music doen't move you?
Very dissapointing party. The crowd was great. Most of them were dressed up in leather or footy short. The music played by DJs Jason Forbes and Sandy Hotrod were really sucks. I was expecting they played kinda house music and trance music as the theme sounded so kinky and sleaze. In fact they played "Nothing compares to you by Sinead O'Connor" and some other Madonna and Britney. What a joke. I thought these crowd are in the wrong place. On the add that I read on SX and SO mentioned "This is a man's party" But I saw 2 girls danced on the Arena. It shows that ARQ has very weak management and the security / ticket seller didn't give enough information strictly as women/girls not allowed to join the party. And The Red hot show by the Chicago male dancers were vomiting to watch. They copied from Beyonce's I AM A SINGLE LADY. So very dissapointing that show....I was hoping to see genuine sleaze for the main event..not just guys dancing around in their underwear and look so girly. Too PG for a men only special event. And I had a chat with few people who came up from down stairs' venue (Pride Party)who managed to come up to Arena (up stairs venue where the Black Party was held) , where they only paid $15. Black Party's cover charge is $30. The whole thing were so bad.I spent $150 in total ( ticket, lollies and drinks), what a waste of money. I didn't get what supposed to get.
Those who know me, know that I do my best to please all my patrons and staff at Perfect Day. I do my best to help those in need. I have been known to give patrons money to get home and help them get drinks. This is why I am involved in raising money for great charities that help the community. In the past I have raised money for Sydneys Children Hospital and National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Free entry to Perfect Day existed only in the first 5 weekends. I took care of the costs initially. I employ the best House DJs in the business, Mark Alsop, Murray Hood, Brett Austin, James Tobin, Scotty Tanner and Miss Match over two levels. Quality music and atmosphere does cost money.
I think its fantastic that there are clubs donating money to various charities during Sydney Pride. There are many great charities out there, which do great works. Most of my patrons, where happy to know that we are donating part of the door to Charities. They even donated more money in bucket donations.
I see that your message, dated on Sat, and on 1.02pm, suggested to me that you may have not come to Perfect Day? If you had approached me with your concern, express your financial circumstances there would have been a very good chance that I would have asked you to put what you can afford in the donation tin, for the charity Positive Life NSW, and let you in. I did this a few times yesterday.
Today 20% of door proceeds will be donated to Pozhet and the Luncheon Club. We will also raise further monies to these organisations by bucket donations, with Drag Queens, going up and down Oxford Street and the club. Today we have DJs Brett Austin, Mark Alsop, Scotty Tanner and Dan Pearce. We expect to be really busy today, and cloak room is available, doors open at 12 midday and we normally close at 9pm on Sundays.
I value your feedback, come and say hello and I will get you the first drink on me. If your broke, let me know and I will just ask you to donate some coins in the donation box instead.
hmmm, its all well and good to claim costs but when you have several amature DJ's and unknown amature Drag Queens performing what at best can be described as tragic and distracting shows all for ....wait for it.....FREE its a pretty sad argument when your, as you claim 'resident' DJ's are nowhere to be seen.
As a regular atendee of perfect day, i go to see the resident DJ's cast aside or playing in the 'upstairs' bar while an amature is playing downstairs shows not only disrespect but a complete lack of understanding of how a night should be run.
im all for supporting new talent and giving them a go but FFS i go to hear the resident DJ's play and not be tortured by a pollies follies show, ill get that at stonewall later!!!
If it wasnt for the generally good DJ's and GREAT staff at the Gaff (big shout out ot Ren in particular) i would be going home instead!
Never read the blurbs on what the posters or the papers say. Always check out who the djs are. You want dirty house?..... go to Woofclub, Dirty, Xtra Dirty etc...check out those djs and see where they're playing.
Just for 1 person a whinger like you and never come again and chose going home instead, it doesn't make any different. the club is still be running, and the show must go on.
Agree with you 100%: ARQ Promoted this as a mans party. There were 5 girls that really looked out of place dancing aroud guys that were asking the same question as every guy there, "What are these girls doing here". I saw security letting those from downstairs up as well- They dont give a F***. The same as ARQ. This is all too typical of whats happening iin this city. A Pride event....... CRAP..... Just a money grab from ARQ again. I wish that the venues provide what they advertise.
yeah im with you on this one. i dont understand how can someone go to an event and not checking the dj line up. the booked djs for manhunt party have been around long enough for people to know what they play. sorry, the complaints are out of the place here.
what i dont understand even more is that the tickets for some of the major parties are on sale way before the line up is announced. NMG is pretty good at this. only a fool can buy a ticket to an event without the entertainment being released.
I think the DJs, especially Mark Alsop (MA)+, will find your statement to be false. Mark Alsop has been a DJ, in the basement 3 hours every Sat and Sun, since Perfect Day begun. Your statements are respectively false.
Jason Forbes and Sandy Hotrod should have been a big give away as to the music style, however i get your point. If i was from interstate or didnt know who these djs were, the advertising would be quite misleading. It implied a harder, dirtier, mens only event. But when i saw the dj line up i knew it would be a commercial musical style. As for the 'mens party' tag, I was wondering how they could get away with that on a general admission event. You'll find no venue can refuse entry based on gender without a proper exemption, or unless the event is a private invite/members only event. So you'll just have to put up with 2 girls dancing on the dancefloor, although it seems there were plenty more than that dancing to Beyonce, Madonna, Sinead and Britney...
I'm in Sydney for the weekend and would love to catch up with one of my fave DJs, Rob Davis. Does anybody know where he is playing? I'll be here Wed, Thurs, Fri, Sat & Sun.
IS THE MIDNIGHT SHIFT REALLY OPENING ON SUNDAYS???
My bf and I were speaking with Clarence from the shift at the last indulgence party who was telling us that the Shift is going to be starting up on Sunday afternoons? It was going to be a dirty men's leather party every sunday week. We both have not heard anything of it since....Does anyone know any more information? or is it just going to be another party?
Wouldnt it be nice if the Clubs did bring on some Sunday afternoon entertainment ! and by that I dont mean just dancing.
Anyone remember Caps ? and the Sunday arvo shows they would put on ? you had dancing in-between , then some great shows to break it up. And you could go home by 10pm after having a great time.
guy on keyboards who I think has passed away and a girl with great voice - Kat I think her name was.
I mean they can give it a go for a few months to see if it works.
Have an arvo of Jazz an arvo of Drag an arvo of Vaudeville type acts ? where you can go and sit and watch/listen have a few bevvies without the load constant doof doof doof happening ! dont get me wrong
I enjoy my doof doof doof on a Sat night but those weekends you dont go out it would be nice to have something like this during the arvo.
I'm sure the current owners went into liquidation because they borrowed and spent too much on the 3 hotels they own. And all 3 would have been lumped together as a whole, even if one was trading well.
But whoever buys the Oxford needs to have a sound business plan and know what they are doing
I was almost going to step into Stonewall Saturday night but then realised they wanted to charge cover to get in there. These places are not quality places and therefore should not be asking for cover. Unfortunately there are always going to be people desperate enough just to be in a gay bar and pay the cover...therefore resulting in these places not bothering to completely refurbish...Me and my friends have more fun in the plush striaght bars now...
omg is this the only post since the 26th (the naviGAYtion post)
wow nothing else happened? or all the posts in between have been censored - thats more like it...wouldnt be the first time.
ps looks like pinkboard is dead and in case you havent heard michael jackson is too...you certainly wouldnt read it on pinkboard cause it has got nothing to do with cover charge at stonewall or splitting the parade and party at mg (the hot topics right now)
Glad to hear New Mardi Gras have appointed Katrina Marton as Head of Events. I don't know her personally but given that she was the Production Manager of both Mardi Gras Party and Sleaze Ball in 92, 93, 94, 97, 98, 99, 00 and 01 she's got one hell of a track record.
Everyone will remember that Kylie performed in 94 and I reckon we haven't got close to matching the amazing 2000 and 2001 parties since.
My favourite quote from her in SX is "I’m confident I can help produce events of a quality Mardi Gras has never seen before".
I saw 4 people arrested at different times by undercovers at the last Frisky party.
I saw 2 dogs once, but heard that they came in 3 times and that over the night they arrested 30 people, mainly through entrapment.
At Mardi Gras I saw 5 people arrested at different times too.
And now I read in a newspaper that the Campbletown Catholic club had 29 cops and some sniffer dogs visit them a few times in a 4 hour period on a Friday night.
Look what happened to the love in the scene djs are whoreing themselves out just to get work
what has happened to style none of the djs are being true to their style some just please a crowd
im looking for all you out there that admire real djs playing the dirtyest of styles from electro to house
not this freemasons shit everyones playing
im going to raise the bar and set a new industry standard you other djs have got to stop this war and bickering theres no love yous all think yous are better
stay true to your style and your voice will be heard through your music ...
i propose bring back the dirtyness and the underground style ...
I understand what you're trying to say, but it's a little contradictory. You want DJs to be true to themselves, but you only want dirty music.
For a lot of DJs, being true to themselves involves playing Freemasons and similar tracks. This isn't any less valid a style than any others. It's more common/mainstream, and clearly a lot more people like it.
The unfortunate thing is that venues dictate the music policy. A lot of the dj's out there play the regular commercial stuff that the crowd wants to hear at your normal regular nights. You'll find that most of them at big events pull out the big guns and rock it out!!
Imagine a stonewall dj playing some dirty Paulo style all night. You'd be sacked.
I agree with you that dj's should stick to what their hearts love playing, but from what I see all the dj's you are putting into that bracket genuinely love that style ...... and you always have to consider the fans and cater for them and what the venue dictates music policy wise.
Into groups? Starting Saturday July 4, Mongrel, a new monthly club night, hits the Phoenix Bar for all you boofheads, blokes and ratbags. Steve Sonius and Ben Drayton are joining forces and will be tag teaming you all night with hairy chested, funk driven beats. Between them they have a history spanning Bad Dog, Sleaze Ball and Inquisition as well as a long association with the sweatier nights down at phoenix. Come down for the bun, we'll give ya heaps! $15 entry, $10 in footy shorts.
Currently listening to: MegaLevels - Cari Lekebusch
see, for you dj paulo (i guess thats who you are reffering to) plays "dirty music". for me dj paulo is just another fluffy american fluffy curcuit fluff dj. the same as nissim, moron and many other ones.
for me, dirty music is what was played at action. what is played by rollins, drayton, lawler, bad dog's music... (btw, music should be about experience, melody, energy flow - which is hardly achieved by playing freemasons)
if paulo plays dirty so does hotrod. take some drums, screaming diva and lets call it DIRTY FLUFF - a new music style.
Just like some DJs play a few different styles, some producers do different style remixes. Some of Paulo's remixes are fluffy, camp and fun. Some are trancey. Some are down right filthy and progressive.
The dirtiness you speak of has no place in the venues such as stonewall, shift, and most times arq. It's a style that I personally love but I wouldn't go out to hear all the time. That's why Mandy and ors hold the events they do to cater For it. It's comes down to demand. I still am confused, u want all the dj's to change and play dirty?

Announcement in this week's press ....
Thank goodness this is finally happening. it's the only party my friends and I are going to this year. we're so over the scene but INQ is always the friendliest party around.
Never been to 202 Broadway and we are from Melbourne.
Can anyone give us an idea of the size of this place ?
and how big the dance floor areas are ?
Say compare to Dome or to Home ? we loved all the room in Hordern/Dome etc but not fussed on small dance floors like you get at Home on that mid level/upper level.
hiya we are from Melbourne
202 is a brand spanking new venue in an old Bank building on the corner of City Rd and Broadway, adjoining the Lansdowne Hotel. You can see pictures from the ground floor bar in this week's SameSame snaps. http://www.samesame.com.au/gallery/13103/Picnic-presents-Horse-Meat-Disco.htm
total Venue capacity is around the Dome and some, with a variety of spaces to suit all tastes. The Hordern is to much of a big barn space really and the Dome is (I hear) no longer available to book as a lone venue.
The event will have 3 dance areas, chill/ performance space, enclosed courtyard areas and lots of comfy spaces to sit and admire the festivities.
Give it a whirl - there are lots of accom options nearby.
202 small dance spaces & bright lights!! ewww
i always go to Inqy, but not this year-not at that venue.
not worth a trip from melbourne-stay at home
this may sound like a negative post but its actually a positive .....for the people from melbourne,im saving you an airfare.thank me at sleaze cubicle 4 in the horden gents @ 3am
I was forced to leave a club on Monday morning because an aggressive lesbian ripped something off my face and grabbed my head and shoved it into her crotch (as she growled - wtf?). As much as I try, it still haunts me.
This is the first time I have been subjected to any form of violence in my life. I guess I got off lightly ... just a reminder to never let your guard down despite how well the night is going.
Got my early bird members tix @ $89 each. Don't know how they will go trying to sell last release non members tix @ $139. A bit steap me thinks. And what is with this four stage ticketing price - it's getting a bit much.
Think NMG is running a huge risk trying to expand the party when on the same weekend you have Parklife, NRL grand final, Gods Kitchen and charging $139 for non-members and a four stage ticketing price. Lets hope it pays off....
For my gang the current pubs/clubs and smaller one venue parties are fine but we dont go out every weekend anymore.
But you just cant go past Fox Studios with the multi venue parties and we now only down to 2 per year and thats Mardi Gras and Sleaze.
You just cant beat having multi venues/choices of music and the walking between the venues, having a rest or a perve sitting outside or sitting in those Hordern bleaches looking out over the dance floor when there is a show or just simply watching the lighting is unbeatable ( in my opinion ).
NMG has picked up their act over the last few parties so need to support.
"Think NMG is running a huge risk trying to expand the party when on the same weekend you have Parklife, NRL grand final, Gods Kitchen and charging $139 for non-members and a four stage ticketing price. Lets hope it pays off..."
First release tickets are only $89 for members and $109 for non-members. The $139 non member price doesn't kick in until the fourth release.
"The promotion for the party has also been poor compared to it's rivals on the October long weekend, NMG may want to get their campaign started ASAP."
Thats because it only went on sale last Thursday!
And can I just say the posters are sooooooooo hot!
I'm not a big fan of this continued use of 'models' and photographs in virtually every poster or marketing attempt you see for gay parties. It all looks a bit amateurish. Some of the artwork you see used for straight dance parties and festivals is awesome. Why not get some of these designers to work on NMG and other gay campaigns? Would give the parties a much more modern and fresher look
what i dont understand is why the sleaze tickets are on sale while the full line up has not been announced yet (correct me if i missed something)
i have not seen anything like it anywhere apart from sydney gay scene. no one else would DARE start selling tickets for an event without letting people know what they can expect. who came up with this stupid strategy? why NMG doesnt let people to decide if they to come to sleaze based on who is p[erforming? or is NMG relying on "i will go because my friends are?"
look at me nmg, ive got one word for you - sheeps.
Most of the big straight events can afford to come out with the full line-up up front because the've been selling out within a day or two for a number of years. Sleaze Ball has never done this.
So, to keep the momentum and grab a share of media space you need to drip feed the party information over a number of weeks at the start.
Otherwise you would only hear about the party once and then everyone would be complaining that they didn't know about it.
And remember that straight parties have the total population to pull from whereas a gay party is targeting a percentage of 10%.
If I saw a poster for an event at the entertainment centre but the name of event had yet to be announced how would you respond ?
I'd say something like "What the f..."
Imagine buying a ticket blind for this so called event at the entertainment centre and then being told a few weeks after the purchase that you'd bought a ticket to a religious convention. No disrespect to the event but it's not excactly what I was hoping for.
Same theory applies to Sleaze Ball. If I buy a ticket upfront and then they announce a range of DJ's that aren't to my taste then I've bought a ticket to something that I was NOT hoping for.
Anybody whose main focus for attending a dance party is to hear a style of music or a selection of certain DJ's who buys a ticket in advance not knowing who or what is on the bill is a short sighted fool.
at the end its all about $$$$.
i do not agree with this strategy. i want to know what im paying for. you dont go to coles, get a plastic bag full of groceries and find out what you bought at home? or is this how you make your shopping?
sorry i dont. i dont want to be dissapointed when i get there. if i want to go to a party or a club, the first thing i DO is to check the line up. simple. i dont need to make my decisions based on "what my friends do". they have their own brain , so do i. :o)
the point he is making is they have the whole show worked out before the tickets are on sale.
Your argument is crazy; Sleaze could sell well in a shorter time if all the details were advertised 'from the get-go"
Drip-feeding is only counter-productive as early bird buyers are stuck with DJ's and music they don't like and would not have purchaed had they known at the start.
What you seem to be saying is a Sleaze Ball needs like 3 months to sell its tickets. Why not keep selling after the party is held so people who kicked themselves for not going can buy one?
I totally agree, why should we have to live in a world where we take a punt and buy a ticket to an event in the hope it 'May' be a great party when you are in competition with the straight parties on the same weekend (and let's face it loads of the gay community also attend) who give you the the line up 'from the get-go'.
I am all for supporting NMG, but they also need to show their support for the partygoers and give us more information regarding the nights activities eg: Dj line-up...
"Why not keep selling after the party is held so people who kicked themselves for not going can buy one?"
LOLOLOL
it sounds crazy but NMG is doing just that. only the other way around.
they take your $$$ first and then they tell you what you paid for. whether you like it or not.
ps: the same applies to harbour party. it happened numerous times. the line up was not announced till just few days before the party.
....you dont see shift or arq advertising a "secret dj line up" (mind you in some cases this strategy would probably help them )
"They did that for the last few parties and they have been huge successes. Maybe they know something you dont ?"
Hmmmm..... I seem to recall Sleaze 2008 being a major flop with one dance hall (Hordern) and a tent. Nevermind, I forgive you. It's understandable being Monday morning and all with your Alzheimer's kicking in.
Oh do some research before you post such ridiculous lies
Sleaze Ball 2008 - Villains’ Lair is sold out!

some comments -
SLEAZE PARTY
NMG you kicked arse with the Sleaze Party you put on. Well done.......
The verdict
My verdict - Good but sloppy in parts. Overall I'd say last years Zirkus was a far superior party then this badly produced mess
Brilliant
Loved the party - the atmosphere, decoration and lighting made for a brilliant backdrop for all those friendly, fun and sleazey party boys and girls.
Sleaze 2008 Disappointing
Well Sleaze is over for another year and what a miss mash of music with a poor sound system in the Hordon it was
The hordern was the best i've seen it done up in years, though the counting down clocks were annoying. I understand the logic with daylight savings messing up everyone's "body" clocks, but don't do it again please.
Sleaze ball overall was quite a fun night, although we'd had enough and went home by about 5.30am.
I had a great time. Everyone looks happy and it was a very social night. Both dance spaces were at capacity and I had a bop in both. Thankfully the rain stayed away
The positives:
The costumes of both the party goers and the show perfromers were amazing... best I can remember ever.
Everyone was in a great mood - positive, sexy, friendly and fun.
The single hall meant that the dance floor rocked all night and was very sexual and physical. The lighting and scenery looked great. Shows were good.
The negatives;
One hall meant that there was no options if you didn't like the current music (dj).
and yes there were those that didnt like it.
Point is darl's it either sold out or came pretty close and peoples biggest gripe was the lack of multi venues
which they have addressed this year.
omg people, where do you find the time to worry about what party will be on or if it will be sold out. is this the most important thing in your lifes? (apart from mincing around gyms) wow sounds so exciting!!
btw what will you wear and who will look after your cat while taking the week after off recovering from overdoses in hospitals?
Sleaze:
Arguing about a successful Sleaze Ball in the Horden/ multiple venues and ticket numbers seems a bit redundant these days. Gone are the days when it used to sell out weeks before with 16,000 tickets and we had the R.H.I., the Horden, Dome and City Live. It's Sleaze Ball in name only these days but it's a chance to support Mardi Gras and the more successful it is the more money it puts in the coffers for Mardi Gras for the following year's parade and party.
"Such a shame to see what was a great party die such a long slow death"
unfortunately i have to agree. it is sad to see another party slowly going down. for me, there is only one name (maybe two if i managed to get off my face)that appeals to me.
the poster doesnt come across as inspiring this year either.
i wonder what made slps to make those decisions...
I assume justin and kitty will be doing retro or somthing along those lines. I can see them for free doing the same stuff every weekend. not that keen on paying a fortune for them.
Party was a brilliant concept with lighting, music, screens etc.
Potbelleez really sucked!
It was a great party otherwise and I know this because of actually attending.....
Not keen on supporting SleazeBall after the little board debacle earlier this year changing our night WITHOUT PROPER consultation of its members, making extraordinary decisions WITHOUT extraordinary meetings.
However we get to vote in a few weeks and this could all change once again. Lets hope it does!!!
You can quote me on everything I have said because this is my opinion and stand by it.
I agreed with you. Sandy and Justin were sucks at Manhunt Black Party in ARQ. Pop music ? Sinead O'Connor's Nothing Compares to you ? oh man.....in a leather party played that kinda gig ? And now they playing again in Inquisition ? Oh please...........
hotrod or forbes would be enough to put me off going to inq but KLITTER???? wtf
is it this how slpa wants to attract young sexy leather guys - with klitter?
inq line up - what a joke
and the two venues will not even be connected cause council would never approve such thing. oh yeah, im sooooo gonna be there. not.
Let's be fair!
These are all djs who work hard to deliver the music they love.
The reality is that Sydney queens like their music girly just as they do dirty.
There's nothing wrong with that.
SLPA have catered to this mainly local event by doing a room with a commercial/girly style of music with sandi, kitty and justin and a dirty dark room with chip, mark and george. The last three have a fantastic reputation playing at underground events in sydney.
so if you want to spend the night in a tribal/progressive/dark electro room you have it!
if you like commercial dance you have that too!
Let's get behind the organisation and support them instead of bagging the djs for doing what they do best (whether it's to your taste or not). These guys work just about every week to give us all a place to go and not many djs do these days.
Just because it's a leather event doesnt mean you can have fun with it and that includes the music.
While I loved the Hordern parties when they had so much going on like the women strapped to a pole being carted around by 4 guys or the guy sharpening his blade and sparks going everywhere and that guy who thread himself through a tennis racket and the collective scream when he dislocated his shoulder to do so............ I didnt mind the step back down to Dome as its a great venue with big floor area and people danced under the Dome and others between Dome and the DJ etc but you could go out to the other room and rest where the music was not as loud or outside for a breath of fresh air. It was the big spaces that were great.
My gang stopped going out on Oxford St when the big parties all started at Fox ages ago and just cant go back
to small venue/small dance floor. There is just something about being on a decent sized packed dance floor you just cant get in a put or small club.
Shame Fox dont let out just Dome on its own. Is that true ?
I looked at 202 website and its not going to be for me. Realise it suits others but Hordern or Dome just cannot be beaten for great venue.

I know some didnt like the Hordern but that Party I reckon was one of the best ever.
The scenery and the Hordern is what made it. I remember
standing with a group of friends chatting when the guy came on with the tennis racquet. When he disloted his shoulder ( I think he was on one of those reality shows on TV awhile back ) you could here the eeeeeeeeewwwwwww
and you were mesmerised by him threading himself through the racquet.
I had the girl tied to the pole being hauled around by guys and singing out " help me, help me" a few times
and was a real buzz.
Dome is great just if you tried to do similar scenery it wouldnt come off as great.
But the pubs/small clubs just dont do it for us anymore.
Wasnt the Inquisition in the Hordern the party Kate Munroe played Dolly Parton. I would have thought that was the most vivid memory of that night of all. Forget the tennis racket guy , forget the lady tied up on the whipping board.... for sheer shock value Kate playing Dolly tops them all.
New Mardi Gras have released more line up information for this year’s Sleaze Ball – Game On. Get ready to party with Paul Goodyear, Greg Boladian, Mandy Rollins, Feisty and Sveta, who will join Scissor Sisters Tour DJ Sammy Jo.
Paul Goodyear is well known to Sydneysiders and a rising star on the international circuit. Based in London, Paul travels extensively and has recently played in San Francisco, Madrid, Amsterdam, Los Angeles and Rio to name a few. Most recently he headlined San Francisco’s Gay Pride.
For over a decade DJ Greg Boladian has delivered his energetic style of vocal house to dancefloors around town. Having spent recent years honing his musicality, he’ll be unleashing some of his blazing remixes at Sleaze Ball.
DJ Feisty delivers solid, polished, quality. Known for her long association with Sydney’s premier Underground venue Phoenix and veteran of some of Australia’s largest dance parties, Feisty is one of Australia’s most popular Tribal-Tech DJs.
Mandy Rollins, Dirty and Extra Dirty promoter and resident DJ, is a 13-year veteran of the Sydney club scene. She has played events for as many as 25,000 at Mardi Gras, Sleaze Ball and Inquisition, as well as weekly residencies both locally and internationally. Mandy’s sound – tribal, raw and sexy.
Russian-born, Sydney-based Sveta is widely known around Australia for her unforgettable and explosive sets at Mardi Gras. Sveta plays a diverse and eclectic range of funky, twisted, deep and dirty grooves, her sets ranging across electro, electro clash, rock, lounge, vocal house, deep-tribal house, funky tech-house, progressive house and techno.
No - you've combined different parties there, there were actually 3 Inquisitions in the Hordern. Dolly Parton was party #1 (2000), the tennis racket was party #3 (2002)I think.
2 great venues turned over to SLPA and friends for the night, news on performances and other treats to come!
DJ line up:
Lansdowne ground floor:Justin Scott, Chip
Lansdowne upstairs: Sandy Hotrod, George Roussos, Mark Alsop
202 Broadway ground floor: Murray Hood, Troy Cox, Kitty Glitter
202 Broadway vault: Puppy, Sveta, Ben Drayton
join the fb group Sydney Leather Pride Association
Ticket orders from Sax Fetish Sydney
one year in the Hordern the entire space was transformed into a set of rooms in a castle, probably the most labour intensive set ever done for a party. Sadly the $ are no longer there for using a room twice the size required by the attendees
After last years Inquisition I said I would not go again because of the crap venue 'The Forum' (or whatever its called this year).
However, the new venue is a change and sounds ok (I can walk there!).
I also don't feel that a Leather party really needs a 'big room'.
The DJs sound like a good mix and its also a cheaper party at 60 bucks not 100.
Sounds pretty good to me!
Could someone please confirm if there is access between venues via the laneway or if we have to leave and walk around the corner??
This may help with my choice of outfit.
Also, are we getting exclusive use of the Lansdowne that night??
no no no,
im sure theres a cheesier fluffier mix than this one.
that makes me wonder, where does the sexy crowd go these days?
(no, im not talking about the twinks, drag queen followers, homesexual screamers or g addicts)
"I remember 9 to 5 so well. I was speechless with shock"
I think sometimes we take things too seriously (and I include myself in this). Perhaps the DJ was trying to inject a bit of humour into the night... you know the juxtaposition of all these hot manly men in leather dancing to a sterotypical camp song.
So Stardust is the new Homosexual Party @ Home Nightclub happening on Sunday 4th October Midday to Eight PM. Progressive uplifting trance. Is S.C. trying to steal from Frisky and Toybox? And at $80 a tix - way over the top for Home.
Couldn't be any worse then NMG's line up, whom you can hear anytime. And if Jack Chang is that bad how come he is a busy boy on the international circuit.
Sailing in a few months, reservations close soon for deposits.
Less than 100 cabins now left!
Go to AllGayCruises.com.au for info, deck plans, and cabin prices
wow stardust is the new dorothy! same old same old but brand new name - very spacey, intergalactic lol
but what got me on the floor was - 8 out of 10 homesexual recommend dorothy rofl!! what is he going to come up with next?
I haven't heard a good trance set from Matt since 06, and I've heard a few from him, I'd even argue that he doesn't play trance anymore, it's more house even when he's playing a "trance" set. As for Tim Graham, the less said the better.
I'll be giving this a miss entirely, to expensive for Home, bad line up, bad sound at Home, I haven't enjoyed a Homesexual yet, even when I've had free entry and haven't wasted money on paying to get in. Queer Nation at Home or straight events have been the only decent ones in that venue.
Our next Passion event is on Saturday 15th August.
We are delighted to welcome back DJ Man, this time playing the second (closing) set. Man wowed us with his opening set at Passion 1, and is guaranteed to deliver a similar performance at Passion 4.
Stephen is just itching to play some of the amazing new music which he has been quietly collecting, so make sure that you arrive early and catch all of his set.
Additional production is by the Ruby team.
Details are:
Date: Saturday 15th August 2009
Place: Gilligans (Oxford Hotel, downstairs)
Time: 11pm till 5am
Cost: $10 on the door
DJ's Stephen Simpson, DJ Man
2am lockout applies please be early to avoid disappointment.
"who are you voting for in the mardi gras election?"
Can we please not discuss anymore politics on this the party wall. Mardi Gras elections is way of this wall's topic and I for one am sick of politics on what is supposed to be a wall about fun things.
I saw that Stardust was at Home so I thought nahhh...not for 80 bucks...but then I saw Matt Steer was there. I remember a couple of years ago when he did Toybox. It was amazing! I think I might have to go despite it being at that hole!
Jack Change is busy because he is based in Europe. He can travel to so many major cities either by train or plane for relatively low cost to the promoter. The closest international market for aussie DJs (aside from NZ) is Asia which is the best part of $2000 return airfare + fee + accomodation. It's simply not viable for overseas promoters to engage aussie DJs (often) for that reason. I don't doubt that if our local DJs were based in Europe they too would be traveling all over doing similar gigs on the circuit to Jack (who I like as a DJ btw). Unfortunately our locals are cursed by the 'tyranny of distance'.
I'm wondering if there was going to be some sort of dvd release from the footage that was filmed at the last frisky? I remember reading when I first bought tickets that filming was taking place. Does anyone know?
I just saw the ad for "Dungeons and Drag Queens". Shall we have ARQ filled with flaming gamer nerds? Mind you, the girlfriend said to me "So, you want to go then?"
I gotta say I thought the $89 Sleaze ticket price was quite reasonable. It makes a nice change. I'm so used to seeing gay parties well over $100 and feeling ripped off. Unfortunately I missed out on the first lot but will probably go ahead and buy the $99 tix. If it was any more than that I'd prolly give it a miss
Sandi is now longer playing on Sundays. Last night I found: Arena - Jake Kilby & Greg Boladian. Vortex - Rob Davis. Sorry, I missed the first Votex DJ. No complaints from me about the music whatsoever.
A really good crowd last night but very young -- you know, the facebook generation.
Sunday has traditionally been the younger crowd - alot of the retail crowd, who are young, go on Sundays. I remember going years ago and it was a bit of a twink/Facebook-generation crowd.
wow
looks like the bears will be busy over mardi gras. good on you guys.
(wonder what surprises has SLPA for us, let me guess, kitty glitter wearing chaps? - sure cant wait for that one lol)
Full details of all events, tickets & registration will be released in a couple of months on our new website www.bearessentials.com.au but here's some early details of our most popular events:
Bear Essentials Launch @ the Flinders Hotel (inc. laneway closure) - Thurs Feb 25th.
Bears of Australia Mardi Gras Parade entry - Sat Feb 27th.
Bears Beach Day @ Bondi Beach - Mon March 1st.
Underbear Party @ the Oxford Art Factory - Weds March 3rd.
Wet Furr Pool Party @ Cook & Phillip Pool - Fri March 5th.
Harbear Cruise on Sydney Harbour - Sat March 6th.
Bear corner in the RHI @ the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party - Sat March 6th.
Had a cool time at the Midnight Shift last night....those sexy boys in the show were great but surely there are better dragqueens in Sydney than the one leading the show.... Sydney is supposed have the worlds best drags, but she looked very amateur. Heard she is a good DJ though, so maybe she should focus on that... Great club overall. Have heard lots about it from buddies. Will definitely be back for the Mardi Gras!
"Re: STARDUST
got our tickets this morning. at the least its something new!"
can you please point out the "new" thing to us? all i could find was the word "stardust". the rest is the same old bad old. im obviously missing something you dont. let us know. thank you
"Re: Midnight Shift
... think she is very talented and without people like her there'd be no hot guys dancing on stage at the Shift "
is that your priority when you go out? i would rather have hot guys dancing with me on the dance floor than with a drag on the stage. also i like hot music to dance to which either shift or arq fails to deliver.
i must laugh reading some of the posts here. sometime i wonder who writes them - sexy masculine non queeny guys or the opposit? i believe its the "opposit"
so where does the sexy crowd go?
its certainly not the screaming crowd at the shift or the ***** crowd at S.Cs parties.
So true. A S.C. event is full of lots of promises but very rarely delivers. Looks like he is now trying to copy Toybox. I would be very very surprised if he even came close to the production quality and level of Toybox. And yes this is my opinion but it is based on known facts.
My mate and I were there on Saturday and the place was pretty dead. It was supposed to be a big opening night, but during the show, there were only a couple of rows of twinks in front of the stage and the rest of the room was empty.
The should ditch the boring show and spend the money on renovating the place.
i know s.c. and have worked with him, and i also know he spends the most money out of all of the gay promoters in australia on talent, and still manages to keep the ticket price under $50. not like dtpm who gives you a local line up for the same price, or arq who charges 35$ for locals on a long weekend. he's just trying something new. give him a break.
Perfect Day, on the Sunday 30th August, is having a special Porn & Glitter Theme party with DJs Murray Hood, Mark Alsop and DJ Man and special guest DJ Justin Scott and great live performances.
Have fun at the 'Porn and Glitter' party by dressing up as your favorite Porn Star or Glitter Queen. Come as a police officer, drag, cleaner, biker, plumber, nurse and be in a chance to win great prizes for best dressed. All the DJs are getting behind the event, and I cant wait to see what they will wear. I myself think of going as docter.
On Monday, we having a photo shoot with DJ Mark Alsop probably in his Jocks, which no doubt, you will see in editorial in the upcoming Sydney Star Observer Newspaper next week. Mark is our poster boy for Perfect Day, a resident DJ at Perfect Day, playing 3 hr sets each Sat and Sunday each weekend!
Perfect Day is a Day club open every Saturday and Sunday from 12 midday and is located at The Gaff, corner of Oxford and Riley street, Darlinghurst. Entrance is only $10 for those who dress up, 15 otherwise on this special theme party event. All other times it is just 10 bucks.
If you cant make it on the 30th, try coming over this weekend, were we anticipate a huge recovery turnout from the leather pride participants the night before.
Sad to say but looks like Melbourne is the place to party these days. Heading down with mates for Beyond's 9th Birthday Bash. Now these guys know how to throw a party - such a friendly crowd of leather & fetish guys and gals, great DJ's, great music and great lighting. Can't wait.
But Inquisition just feels like any other party weekend now with the venue etc.
Fox Studios ( sure some loved it, some loathed it ) was just a whole difference venue away from the usual haunts etc and Dome ( even the Hordern was ) were great venues.
Again different from the same old same old clubs.
So we decided not to go this year.
For us the party seems to have devolved. I know there are those that didnt like the token leather people going but hey in its hey day those parties in the Hordern were awesome with the scenery and shows going on. Didnt mind when it was Dome and City Live so those token leather people helped to pay for that.
Sure you will probably have just the main hardcore crowd for this party but just doesnt give that thrill like past parties.
i didn't play at ManHunt... I did a BGF Fundraising event downstairs in the Vortex which i donated my night's pay, to BGF. The Arena hosted ManHunt which i was not a part of...
Inquisition 17 was such a fun night, the venue was so great, i loved cruising around up and down the stairs in 2 different buildings. There were lots of rooms and spaces. The bar staffs were friendly. Music was great. The crowds were amazing. there were few people raided by 2 police women and 2 police men , and 1 sniffer dog.so bad......
Inq, last night, was a fun night. It has been described (by a friend in other postings elsewhere) as a fun leather-pride pub night. That is the feel it had a lot of the time. Not like the Inquisitions of the past.
My purpose for this post, though .....
Why don't the police go get a real job - like solving REAL crime.
My experience, working on most of the past 16 Inquisition parties, having co-produced the previous three (I went last night as a patron), participants are mature, out to have a good time without hurting anyone else. So, they might have substances to enhance their night. What harm are they doing?
I know one of the girls that received a field court attendance notice - she says (and I believe her) she was standing in a crowded space when the puppy dog came through. People, stupidly, panicked. Someone dropped a small bag of white powder. It fell under the girl's feet The puppy pounced, the pigs pounced and suggested they saw her drop the bag. They wrote her up as possessing 0.5gm cocaine - firstly, outrageous they carry micro-scales with them and, secondly, how do they know what it was? Both propositions irrelevant. Their actions demonstrate they aren't interested in supply reduction principles - they are just interested in the charge sheet and revenue.
The other aspect to it is that people in possession of chemicals, that hear the dogs are on their way, often take all they are carrying - thus exposing them to the real risk of overdose. It is this panic behaviour that does more harm than anything.
When is this community going to accept the 2006 findings of the Ombudsman that drug detection dogs are ineffective.
Well said Mikey. We all understand that the Police have a job to do and when they are out on the beat with their Inspector, as appeared the case on Saturday night, you do seem to get a slightly more aggressive approach.
Craig, who did that amazing pole show, was questioned because the dog went mad near him after the show.... The old used blankets he had under his greasy pole (to protect the venue's floor) were, wait for it, previously used for his dog's bed... It's not a perfect detection process at all.
That aside, and given Mikey's more important paragraph on harm minimisation, it is nice to report that medical did not write up one incident report on the night.

the rising crew better have ambulances on standby. nothing whatsoever about people taking care. afterall the promoter is asking them to stay up for 3 days straight. pure greed.
I agree, it's highly irresponsible to ask people to kick on after Sleaze from 5am til 2pm, then go from 2pm until midnight. It's clear that's what they are intending, as they are providing buses from Rising to Daywash.
The latest in the series of AcidJasmine Dance Remixes has got all sorts of goodies.
We STILL aint done with Michael Jackson and if ya like cheese, you'll fuckin LOVE LOVE LOVE "Ben 09" . It might be about a rat but dancing to this at 3 in the morning with your hands in the air, you wont care! Hurrah
Anjulie - Long Songs - LOVE this track! Very very catchy and uplifting.
AcidJasmine has only one thing left to say. Houston We have touchdown of the Whitney variety. FAAAAAB! Hurrah. She's BACK! And she is FIERCE! 2009 is gonna be her year.
Enjoy - stick it on ya pod, on ya car stereo, in ya laptop, on a CD and DANCE!

What a ridiculous comment to post that the RISING event is 'highly irresponsible'. If you feel there should be NO events for people to celebrate and be social after sleaze then you should make it known to ALL promoters including TOYBOX, FRISKY, HOME, INDULGENCE, etc etc etc. Get a life and some maturity! You sound really jealous of RISING. Besides not everyone is interested in going to Sleaze, it may not be thier thing so people are planning to start their outing on the Sunday and that is not 'higly irresponsible'! seriously, grow up...
me and my friends are not interested in Sleaze music or venue. we love the Rising parties and feel they take care of us and are the most responsible. shame on you attacking them when they genuienly care about their clientle. Richard
I already bought my tickets to Daywash. and i am looking forward to the buses too. i'm not going to sleaze so i thank Rising for putting on this event for me. Well done. Happy
I can't believe that writer (with no name i might add!) just said that, have you even been to rising events?? have you even partied on the scene?? who better to provide parties than the rising and rising/rogue teams, i have yet to be in a club that looks after the clubbers like these guys! its nothing to do with greed,(as they are always the most reasonable priced partys) the very fact that they usher staff around with jugs and jugs of free fresh water and ice blocks many times through the course of the event not to mention at least 2 - 3(that ive met)party rovers (and at least 5 - 6 (again that ive seen) friendly staff circulating the venue ensuring maximum possible care and welfare of the patrons, have you even met the incredibly gay friendly security they hire? even in the smallest and intimate of their venues they seem to be accutely aware of this necessity! these guys raise the benchmark in standards, and just for the record myself along with a huge group of my friends have already bought tickets for Qbar and daywash @ chinese laundry, most of us wont be going to sleazeball because of different reasons, some are working late sat nite, some are working sunday morning or early afternoon, so im very very pleased that rising is providing multiple partying sessions for those who miss out on others and for those who simply want to party on from previous parties, its the patrons own right and free will to do so, when they are tired or partied out they will go home like most people i know, we wont all be going for 3 days but when partying becomes a problem for the gay scene and its people we'll be sure to get on to you for a advice on how to avoid it lol, but hey all differences aside i really think you shud buy a ticket(which i bet u already have lol) to daywash and come along (even for researh purposes) and see just how these guys look after us while we are having a fantastic time, hell if it means proving this to you i'll buy you the ticket myself and you can party with me not sure where ur comments are stemming from but please dont disregard these guys as greedy or "irresponsable" there is an enormous amount of time, care, diligenced and respect injected by those in charge, you can clearly see it and feel it. now i really mean it about that ticket, i would like to change your perspective on rising and its team, its on me if u wanna have a dance at what i suspect will be the best chain of parties Sydney will experience this year!! John
all i said was to make sure you have an ambulance on standby. i do work in the club industry (in brisbane i might add) and i know ambulances can be expensive, but please look after your patrons and get one on standby. all i ever see at rising is people being taken out the front and taken into the exchange be RESPONSIBLE!
re-inquisition. A lack of comments usually means that there was very little to bitch about so the assumption (and reports I've heard) is that it was a great party.
re-inquisition. A lack of comments usually means that there was very little to bitch about so the assumption (and reports I've heard) is that it was a great party.
Unfortunately, this has hit the nail on the head. Generally people only ever want to comment on something when they want to whinge.
I went to Inquisition with a bunch of mates, and had a great time. Music was good, atmosphere friendly and fun, and I quite liked that you could go from club to pub feel as you pleased.
Firstly, i find it rather funny that you work in the brisbane club scene (which is I assume where you reside), and that you still manage to be monitoring weekend happenings at RISING. If you're always seeing people being taken to the exchange hotel from phoenix, then perhaps you're a little more local than you would care to let on (but, skillful deflection).
Secondly, your comment regarding RISING asking people to to party for three days straight is absolutely ridiculous. I get the sense that Johan and Randel have always been conscious of the fact that people need to party responsibly... If punters choose to attend sleaze, then q bar, then daywash, or stardust, and then dtpm, and then q bar again then that is their choice I feel. I have enjoyed what RISING have done for this community. They are clearly seeking to provide something new to the dance party scene (as opposed to the typical after partys which, lets face it, are becoming quite mundane nowadays). It just so happens that RISING do throw excellent parties (hello, were you at Qbar for the last long weekend? I have never ever seen a party like that before!), and its ironic, as you seem to be at least somewhat aware of this - as you assume that people WILL be attending all three RISING events on the october long weekend.
That original comment you made was just bitchy. There's no need for it. If RISING are so irresponsible (with their medics and caring staff) I challenge you to make the move from Brisbane and throw your own recovery party here, and
show RISING how its done.
This one has been a long time in the making. It's my newest mix of pumping, uplifting tunes. Kicks off with a beautiful track by Aly and Fila - with a special extended intro - and soars into some newer, uplifting tracks that will leave your hair standing on end.
It's all a bit special - with some vocals intermixed - and finally coming out the other side with a track has been dubbed the trance anthem of the year. It's stunning. Absolutely beautiful.
All but one of the tracks are new - gives you a good idea of how amazing and energetic the new trance is. Give it a go - even if you like the old school sound. You won't be disappointed!
I am going to all three RISING parties because the other parties don't come close to what RISING does for me and everyone else that goes there. And.. What clus on the strip has ever had an ambulance on standby? RISING is the last club on the strip that requires an ambulance! If you have seen patrons at any time dropping at any time dropping and being taken into another part of the building wouldn't you not agree that they are upholding a duty of care and not just throwing them out on the street. Lets face it! Every club and every dance party will have issues with intoxication and thats beyond control of the promoter. All they can do is keep a watching, caring eye on their party and act responsibly which is what RISING... ALWAYS do! Hayden
Im out all the time at all the different venues and I have a great time. But I dont think any of the venues care that much about patrons indulging illegally. Its openly done everywhere inside (including g which is the riskiest) so how is that caring for patrons?? They dont exactly get booted out do they...

... i planned to go but something came up so missed out on the b-day. Love to know how it went. Heard that it was not a full house with average music .Where does everyone go on Friday nights? Streets used to have lots of traffic
i thought thats why the next one is called stardust.
theres plenty to choose from over the sleaze w/e:
sleaze
bad dog
q bar rising
daywash
woof club
dtpm
q bar rising
...and stardust
what crowd goes to homesexual these days? i havent been for years. fancy posters, free champagne and tralala divas dont it for me anymore..
I do Im suprised more parties are not held at The Big Top, Luna Park. Toybox is the best. Otherwise Tank/DTPM is good and Nevermind is fun as well. For me, venue and sound is just as important as the music.
If I were you, I'd wait a couple of weeks. There is a new NYD party happening in Sydney, which by the sounds of it will be very appealing to both straight and gay markets. One of my mates is involved, and he's given me a sneak peak at the line-up, venue, etc.
Its a celebration of saying goodbye to the old year and bringing in the new
Any event that is solely on New years Day completely misses the point of the celebration and should only be treated as an event for those that want to kick on from the night before.
as long as its ACTUALLY appealing... has anyone seen the fierce angels lineup? I'm guessing that this is a party that ALSO tried to attack both the straight and gay crowd, and have instead ended up with a fairly haphazard mix of djs that will apparently excite and amaze us... I'm not holding my breath...
is there not a frisky on jan 1st in the night as last year?
we had a great new years with drink and views of the fireworks (let the bogans overrun the city) a nice swim at the beach then off to frisky that night. a great start to the year!
i just got this message from Dean Murphy. he sent the same message 10 days ago. come on dean it can't be selling that well. 70% of the chinese laundry's capacity (which is 150) according to their website is 105 tickets. big woop!

Just in regards to ‘Dean Murphy Please Calm Down’ message, why would the Rogue and Rising boys do a party for 150?? They have hired the entire venue which caters for a much larger crowd. Last I heard they do not do parties for Hens and/or Bar Mitzvahs.
I work for a ticket outlet and we are struggling with the demand for tickets. I look very forward to Daywash as no doubt it will be THE party of the whole Sleaze weekend (including the Ball itself).
Thats hilarious!!! How stupid must you be to think that two party promoters from separate states who already have successful parties would run an event that only catered for 150 people. I was at chinese laundry two weeks ago and from where I stood there was a hell of alot more than 150 people in the venue. Quite a number of my friends are going including 20 friends from Melbourne. A word of advice for the Rogue/Rising guys.... Keep doing what your doing!!!! Your obviously doing something right because your parties have rocked every single time, and there is clearly some jealous people out there!!!

Birthday
In less than 2 weeks, Beyond will be celebrating its 9th birthday. Many of you have already have purchased your tickets for what should be our biggest party ever.
Unfortunately, due to external factors, we were informed late yesterday afternoon that it cannot be held at Beach Nightclub due to liquor licensing issues and the Sydney Road Traders Association objecting to the venue re-opening.
With the party less than 10 days out, our only option is to change the date to have our 9th birthday as a day party, the following day, Sunday 13 August.
We will be celebrating our birthday in familiar surrounds at Chasers Nightclub from 10am to 7pm. Beyond will have the whole venue for the day, with the progressive trance of Scott Anderson, Dan Wilson and Eric Tan being pumped out on the main room dance floor and Rob Gilbert upstairs. This also provides us the opportunity to provide you larger cloaking and change room facilities.
As this will be the biggest Beyond we have ever had, the laser and lighting production will be bigger than anything else we have ever done. Ben and Dan will be working overtime for this one.
While this is a significant change to our 9th birthday party, having the whole venue to ourselves is a fantastic opportunity and one we would never get on a Saturday night. Thanks to Martha and Bill for being able to accommodate us at such short notice.
We fully understand that these changes will not suit all of you and for that we sincerely apologise. This is a reluctant but essential change. If you have purchased a ticket and are no longer able to attend, you can obtain a full refund from your ticket seller.
Once again, while we would like to offer our sincere apologies for any inconvenience that these changes may cause, we look forward to seeing you all at the biggest Beyond party ever.
It’s our 9th birthday, so come and celebrate with us on Sunday 13th of September at Chasers.
See you on the dance floor
Tim & Andrew
There are too many parties that weekend!
I have decided on Stardust and then Fierce Angel. Yay! I even get forced to go home at a reasonable hour Monday morning to do my pt session.
Well I definitely know where I will be going for the October Long Weekend.
Jesus, Fierce Angel has a ripper line up, far from "haphazard", it's a hell of a lot more appealing. Rising is going to be the same old shite, different locale, and the deejays are just on repeat that whole weekend at 3 different venues. Rado excites me slightly, but not in comparison to Paul Goodyear and KKlass..... and the Ivy, well come on!

Yup, definitely Fierce Angel for me. I was feeling fairly uninspired by most of the parties in Sydney on the long weekend, even though there are lots of them.
I'm sure Daywash will be fun, but like you said, it's the same ol same ol DJs just in a new venue. Paul Goodyear and K-Klass - now that's klassy!
Have not been to Chinese Laundry before, either. Some of my mates say its a good venues, but others don't like it. Pretty mixed responses, overall.
Plus, I LOVE the Fierce Angel compilations!! Mark Doyle is a genius, back to what Hed Kandi used to be
Fierce Angel is run by the same people who do Hed Kandi and although it has a good line up, it is really aimed at a mixed/ straight crowd, as most of the dj's are big in the straight scene. As for your comments on the Rising being the same old shite...thank god!!! I have had a ball at everything that lot have run and at least i'll be able to kiss my boyfriend in public oh and take my top off. Anyway good luck at Hed Kandi oops i mean Fierce Angel.
I heard Homesexual's Birthday was terrible. In fact the last 2 i went to were really average. How do they afford to keep that tired old thing going??? I heard they are about to do one in Brisbane and Melbourne. Do you think someone needs to warn our gay interstate friends??
No your interstate friends already know what they are like these days. I would expect if they do one in Brisbane it will be at Fluffy. Both events are about the same in mediocrity.
How are they going to do a Homesexual in Brisbane and Melbourne if they dont have a 'Home' niteclub. They are lucky they dont have it though in my opinion.
All a party needs to be successful is a decent venue and great music. I dont think Home is either of that any more.
You "heard" that homesexual was terrible. So you weren't actually there, you didn't support it, but you're going to moan about it anyway.
Stuff like this is really damaging and counter-productive. If you want to warn anyone about anything, warn someone you meet that you're a chronic whinger and save them the pain of any future involvement. I'm sure your "friends" are already aware.
Haha, that's exactly why I prefer Fierce Angel. The label is run by the guy who used to run Hed Kandi, back when the music released on the label was good! As for this being a straight party, do you think Alex, Kate, Dan, Paul Goodyear, Murray and James are all bigger in the straight scene?
We're giving Daywash a miss, and we'll catch the same DJs on any other given weekend at Rising. Just bought our tickets to Fierce Angel.
Yeah the change in venue, day and time suits me better. As not arriving in Melb till late Saturday because of shift work. So now can get a goods nights sleep beforehand and party all day on Sunday. I luv Chasers too - great venue to party at and Beyond are one of the best parties. Such a friendly crowd and great music and lighting. Can't wait.
i agree, stop the negativity and just go whichever party is your scene. thank you to all promoters taking the risk and making the effort to put on a range parties for us to choose. i'm glad there isn't only one choice. lets go all out i say, life is too short! come on guys... show a little more support before we are left with nothing.
Fierce Angel gets my vote! And I will even kiss my bf there too! haha Not snogging though cos that is gross for others to see both gay and straight. I would go to Stardust too but unfortunately its at Home and will basically be Homesexual with a new name plus some extra helium cartoon characters perhaps.
Can someone organise a trance party at the big top?!! Im sure it would be a success cos the venue is awesome.
havent been to the SHIFT for a while....anyone been lately?? thinking of going this saturday for a sleaze warm up,any feedback on saturday nights re crowd size - music etc appreciated
was there a few months back and numbers were low sadly-i want a pumping, up for it dancefloor!
Yeah I agree with that. It's the same with Saturdays too, upstairs has pretty much died in the arse unfortunately. The decor and toilets are looking drab and even the shows look like they are done on the cheap compared to a few years back. I hope they can improve things though cos the place is part of our history.
It is a shame to see what was a great venue suffer, the DJs were not inspiring and it is pity that the Shift stuck by them.
There is so little choice on the strip. That can't happen when the same DJs haunt ARQ, Oxford, Colombian, Shift and Stonewall, many playing multiple venues on the same night!
It is frustrating as well when there is a big party it seems to be the same core group that get the job. If they cannot fill and hold a club dance floor why reward them and force punters to party prices for the same old crap?
Thats why I've stopped going. Hopefully more will do the same and then maybe we will get rejuvinated venues as well. Last time I went out to Arq and went to the bathroom I was too scared to touch anything in fear of catching something.
ahahaha ... you're afraid of catching something there and I'm afraid of getting caught! Saturdays are too unpredictable, give me a Sunday party night, anyday. Anyday? Well, you know what I mean ...
I'm still sold on Sunday nights at Arq; cool crowd, good music, good DJ's (Rob Davis' closing sets are excellent) and happy times.
Any budding up 'n' coming DJs here on Pickboard...?
The Bank Hotel is very pleased to announce that they will be running the hugely successful ‘Break The Bank” DJ Competition for a second year.
Last year’s event attracted over 150 entrants to the competition with contestants from all across Sydney and as far away as Newcastle and even Melbourne! The selection process found that the level of talent was very high – only the best aspiring DJ’s made it into 6 heats and only the top 4 made it into the Grand Final. Some of Sydney’s top DJ’s were on hand to judge each contestant each week and the winner, Jonathan Bennett, has gone to play many gigs at The Bank Hotel as well as other venues as part of his deal with renowned DJ Agency, The Groove Academy.
This years event will again be proven to be the best of Sydney’s DJ Competitions with an even bigger prize pool of over $9000 thanks to our proud sponsors Becks, Inthemix, The Groove Academy, AV sound, Stanton & Music Hub. For the grand final winner this will again include a contract with DJ agency, The Groove Academy, ensuring paid gigs to kick start a real career in the industry.

Could not agree more. With the huge choice of experienced DJ's available, seeing the same core group get all the work is very disheartening. Even DJ's who have played fuctions upstairs at the Shift to sold out crowds can't break through the same-old-same-old barriers. The managers of the Shift really needs to look outside his circle of friends and hire some of the guys/girls who have filled that place before.
Recently an international visitor went to 3 different clubs along Oxford st and each time the same DJ was playing and each time the visitor (without knowing it was the same DJ) commented on the crap music... I won't name the DJ in question but he somehow manages to get all the big parties and numerous weekly gigs playing very mediocre music indeed.
thanx for the input re the shift on sat nites-how dissapointing to hear it though i gotta say
think maybe i will head to dirty
as for arq on sat nite i dont really like the crowd and found it to be the same on sunday nights of late-where did all the guys with shirts off and smiles go?? if i wanted to dance with mainly straights i would go to a straight club-i have many gay n straight friends but prefer a MAINLY gay crowd
The impact to other people like me , I have booked the airline ticket flying from Melb to Syd on sunday at 3 pm, so because the party has changed the day and the time, I have to spend extra money to book another airline ticket on monday, and take monday off by taking my annual leave, and also my hotel booking will be messy too and I can't extend another one day to stay in the hotel as fully booked. It not just messed up my financial, also messed up my Europe trip at the end of the year, as subtracting 1 day from my holiday. BEYOND BLACK'S ORGANISER, you are so unprofessional !!!
Sorry to have heard about The Midnight Shift upstairs venue. My friends and I were always had a great time there few years ago, music was great, DJ's was good, the most hightlight thing was the shows, we believed because the professional shows, the crowds love it and kept coming back. Since the new person managed this place, the shows have been reduced, the podium has been moved, and the e-mail from the members and admirers have never been replied. and also the members have never been sent updating e-mail again like what we normally got. what happened now ? And.......one more thing, we they also are not willing to change the boring kissing competition shows every saturday night, yeah..yeah..yeah...for sure you will loose more clientelle too.
The problem with the shift is that downstairs competes with upstairs and has done for quite some time.
Downstairs has better sound, cheaper drinks, shows and it's free.
Why would you pay $20 on a Saturday for a tinny sounding empty room that is way too loud for the amount (or lack of) of punters, then go downstairs or leave and pay another cover charge somewhere else?
There's no better place than upstairs when it's packed.... if only those days would return
At the moment, the shift upstairs can't compete with their product so they need to be competitive and creative in other areas.
I think you hit it on the head re downstairs competing with upstairs. That just doesnt make sense.Call me crazy but if I were running the place I would experiment with reducing the footprint of downstairs on a Saturday night.I know they love the $ from the bar but consider this option.Close the downstairs dance area on a saturday night. If people wana go to the video bar they can use all of the rest of downstairs ,with music still, but there is essentially no dance floor just the areas around the bars. Then if people want a "clubbing experience" e.g dancefloor environment they can head upstairs where you could have a reasonable cover of say $15.This cost would be more appealing to the people usually choose to dance downstairs for free.Instead of having 2 dance venues-1 free one competeing against one that costs $20.You would instead have 1 dance venue at a more reasonable cost therefore hopefully channelling people that want to dance upstairs.Having the upstairs open like this should encourage more people that are out for a dance to head upstairs.Overall the numbers may balance out.Anyway I think it would be worth them trying it because whats happening now sure aint working. You can all thank me on the dancefloor when they get this idea up and running!
p.s yes mr shift im available for more great ideas!!
as for arq on sat nite i dont really like the crowd and found it to be the same on sunday nights of late-where did all the guys with shirts off and smiles go?? if i wanted to dance with mainly straights i would go to a straight club-i have many gay n straight friends but prefer a MAINLY gay crowd.
I wonder how long you stay ? The crowd is not MAINLY gay until later in the night/early morning plus it's still a gamble; I never really know what sort of crowd turns up, and when.
Surely there was a crowd last Saturday for Rugger Bugger?
Or has everybody become bored with that as well?
I last went to the Shift upstairs about a month ago. Reasonably sized crowd but the music was rather average. Had the music been better I would have felt some desire to go again, but as the posters above have said, the only way to fix it is shake up the DJ lineup but I don't see that happening soon.
I agree... Their DJ selection in recent times has been nothing short of appalling (including the recent addition of a rather uninspiring DJ to their lineup)! Come on shift - you really need to move beyond what we have heard in the past... Safe choices are no longer safe!
In addition - the shows could do with some work aswell... lets move beyond the stuff done purely for the twinks who idolise the drag queens, lets stop having the shows interrupt the night (there is nothing more frustrating than when the music stops because there is a show on... then all the thank yous and well done's provided at the end of the show... snoooooooooze!) and lets actually get some energy back into the shift's upstairs entertainment! Diva-stated is long gone - I think we've all accepted that... But can someone do something in the same vain please?!
The midnight shift SHOULD live for many more years.
Currently listening to: Anything new - By a different DJ.
I have loved the Shift Club for many years but now:
- The DJs are repeating the same stuff.
- The place looks run down
- The show is tediously long. The boys are great dancers, but the concept is passe and Kitty Glitter hasn't got star quality compared to the drag stars of yesteryear (Ashley in Divastated etc). She should stick to DJing.
- The place needs a total proper overhaul, the last real reno was around 2001!
Flick the shows-I go there to dance-shows are a bad interuption!! If they feel the need to put a show on it should be done without disruption to the music e.g purely visual
Flick the shows-I go there to dance-shows are a bad interuption!! If they feel the need to put a show on it should be done without disruption to the music e.g purely visual
They tried that with Gearshift. All of the shows were mixed in and out of the music, the music never stopped. All that happened with the shows was the lighting shifted. Speaking with the guys who were behind Gearshift, they kept on getting requests for 'commercial' music, and 'drag shows'.
Clearly, the people on here who are suggesting these changes - away from traditional drag shows and commercial music - didn't bother to go out and support it once they had it. So it's no frickin' wonder they're putting bad drag shows and commercial crap music back on.
When you compare Arq & Shift on a Saturday night it's pretty much the same thing at each venue -
* same styles of DJ's
* same run down venues badly in need of a makeover
* same high prices for drinks and door entry
So the question -
Why does Arq get a crowd on Saturday and the Shift struggles ?
Take away the appalling number of straights that attend Arq on Saturday - Why do the nice gays who remain choose to go to a rundown Arq full of agro straights over a run down Shift that will not allow the aggro straights to enter ?
NONE of the above makes sense to me - why are people going to Arq and not the Shift when both are much the same ? At least the Shift is gay freindlier ?
My reply, and my honest reasons for the above post are probably a bit obnoxious, but nevertheless probably true:
1. Venue... Good lasers and lighting, Upstairs is a nice big space, and despite the holes in the floor, sticky carpet etc its just a great space to dance in.
2. Music... It may be "the same" dj's, however the music that they play is popular, and lets face it, if the music sucked then no one would go there.
As for the str8 guys, my guess is that they go there for the huge amount of str8 girls that go there, and pretty limited competition...
The str8 girls go there to either get off guts, or with their gay friends...
I am gay and I dont mind the straights there. The straights are often more friendly. Maybe thats why more people go to Arq. Maybe society has progressed enough for a lot of gays not to worry so much about 'keeping the straights out'.
My friends and I tried to support Gearshift but the music was crap and we gave up after a few weeks. Jumpstart was no better and Muscle Mansion, nice to see cute male dancers but the show is a big yawn!
Where are the DJs who can develop a great vibe and electric atmosphere. It used to happen at the shift but those DJs no longer work there.
I really hope the Shift can reinvent itself and provide a greater choice of DJs.
We were at Rugger Bugger Saturday night and the place was packed, although once the show was over and Luke started his set the crowd thinned out significantly.
Like so many we left early as well.
I hope Clarence and the management are reading this thread. It shows there is a lot of potential support for the venue but they need to listen to the customers and fix it.
Quote "I am gay and I dont mind the straights there. The straights are often more friendly. Maybe thats why more people go to Arq. Maybe society has progressed enough for a lot of gays not to worry so much about 'keeping the straights out'."
Ding Ding Ding - We have a winner! That's the correct attitude. It's all about a healthy mix (it's best when it's mainly gay & some straight boys/men) of the right groovers who enjoy the music and just want to dance.
That's why Arq survives -> people like you.

Apart from the main thing (good crowd see previous post(s)), Arq is aesthetically pleasing whereas the Shift is too "boxy". I went to the Shift many times way before Arq was built and also feel that Ar1 is more like a dance club should be; smart design, audio and lighting. Plus a few women (as long as they don't get in your face) in the place keeps the mix right.

above all I think the shift has made a huge mistake in that they have booked what they 'think' is popular. They 'think' that luke leal will draw a crowd, when in actual fact, he won't ... they 'think' that kitty will draw a crowd, when in actual fact, her shows were not what the shift needed.
Ultimately, the shift has essentially appealed to the younger, gayer, male youth (twinks)... they need, instead, to somehow attack the wider market and get the random party goers attending the shift again. The young boys cannot sustain their business... they're too interested in trying to feel popular... the shift need to encourage an atmosphere that attracts not just people that are 20 years old. They need to attract the 30-35 year old market. they are the premier gay venue. The shift is where it should be at!
Whats even sadder is that the artists currently working at the shift don't understand that it is them that has forced it to close... what a shame...
"Where are the DJs who can develop a great vibe and electric atmosphere."
I think the current trend of having DJ's play for 2 or 3 hours is partially to blame here.
Back in the day, DJ's would play for 5, 6 or more hours and had time to build that vibe. With the short sets now the DJ's have to go on with all guns blazing and don't really have a chance to show all their skills.
These days promoters think they have to cram as many dj's into an 8 hour session which might look good on the poster but doesn't really help the event itself.
"I think the current trend of having DJ's play for 2 or 3 hours is partially to blame here. Back in the day, DJ's would play for 5, 6 or more hours and had time to build that vibe"
BINGO !!! Give that man a prize ... you win the meat tray !
The person who posted this is spot on. When I played as a DJ in the 90's at varying Oxford St venues if you got picked to DJ for a venue on a particular night you got to play for the WHOLE NIGHT from opening to closing. You wouldnt play a song more than twice a night (and even then the first and second play would be many many hours apart). You got to play 6-7-8 even 9 hours of music and this gave you scope to play the hits songs but also play new tunes in between the hits.
Today's crop of DJ's are so under the pump to perform in a short 2-3 hour shift that they jam hit after hit after hit into their set and then the next DJ comes on and does the same thing often causing a song to be repeated 3 or 4 times a night
The DJ doing the marathon shift all night in a club is a lost art, and Oxford Street is a lost cause.
um yeh, that's a valid point - but you've forgotten that in the 'good ol days' there weren't nearly as many DJs are there are now - hence the shorter set times
Agree with you there about the interuption of the Muscle Mansion show.....way too long & boring after 5 minutes. A little self-indulgent on behalf the drag queen (Kitty?) if you ask me....
Really wish the best for the Shift longterm though...it is/was a magic venue. )
“um yeh, that's a valid point - but you've forgotten that in the 'good ol days' there weren't nearly as many DJs are there are now - hence the shorter set times”
not necessarily so.
there was fierce competition for some of the residencies i held as a DJ in the mid 90's - They were prized possessions back then.
Simply put, if you were good enough you got to play long all night sets and the wanna bee DJ's had to wait their turn.
The system of 2-3 hour sets has killed oxford street
completely agree... she cannot mix and has BAD taste in music... whenever I've heard her play I've just been bored.
I would've thought a night called 'locker room' would possibly have conjured musical ideas that were maybe a little bit rough - more edgy... Kitty's camp style DOES NOT AT ALL GO with that HOT poster. Or anything for that matter (in my opinion).
Arq has an opportunity to get their fridays going again now that the shift are closing at the end of the month. Good to see Jake playing at them - I've always enjoyed his music. But - he also plays there saturdays? Maybe it would've been nice to have a DJ play there that doesn't already play on saturday or sunday?
I'm with you there....Kitty Glitter is no "pro" DJ compared to our other established names. All the "obsession" and hype about her is mostly due to her own Facebook publicity.
Most of the venues she played or appeared at were half full at best (Trash Palace, Shift Friday/Saturday) so it's hardly a coincidence that all these have closed down...
Bring back the true pros and let's get this town pumpin again with longer sets as suggested in previous comments, and keep the pressure on the venues to lift their game for their patrons....

the "meet market" party the other friday night SUCKED bad!!! only literally about 10 people upstairs (after paying to get in). their underwear parties usually go off, and the one at mardi gras was AWESOME. lets just hope they have the same crowd - and that they stop dodgy perves dressed fully clothed from standing around making the less clad boys a little awkward...!!!
There was all the hype and advertising, we didn't see a closure notice, people turned up and it was closed. We were waiting for some inspired DJs before checking it out but waited too long
for me the problem with djs now is they listen too much to what the promoters and randoms tell them. ok, for a commercial dj, it is your decision to make commercial interests flow. for other djs, it is the task to make music fill the air, sensations attack your mind and body, for music to keep going forward yet based on actual progressions rather than only fad.
i don´t see a lot of risks being taken, by anyone, and for me this has become boring. yet i have hope.
Had a great time at Beyond's 9th Birthday Party, thanks boys. You guys in Melbourne really know how to throw a party, this is what is missing in the Sydney scene.
Awesome music, lighting and such a friendly crowd really made it a great time partying for me. And the darkroom was just icing on the cake.
Will definately be back next year for your 10th Birthday Bash.
"Awesome music, lighting and such a friendly crowd really made it a great time partying for me. And the darkroom was just icing on the cake."
It's pretty sad these days that Melbourne has become the leading city of Australia that is progressive and open minded to topics such as this. Sydney can no longer hold that title. Sydney is just a consertative nightmare city that is full of stuffy old fashioned farts. I'm embarrassed to be a gay Sydney resident in 2009
You've highlighted the phrase related to the darkroom. The days of an official area at Sydney parties seem long gone, but that's not to say that things can't happen. There was a party quite a long time ago where some people tried to get things happening on the dance floor itself in reaction to the lack of dark spaces. "Dicks out at 1:00am", I think it was called. There's no reason something like that can't happen again ... Sleaze is just around the corner
My mistake re DOA ... I'd forgotten about the actual aim of the protest, although I remember having an interesting time with a man in a rubber suit at that party. Perhaps now DOA should be turned into a protest about the lack of dark spaces ...
The days of dark spaces are over, and I'm thankful for that. Personally, I think dance parties are for dancing, drinking, socialising, and having a great time with your friends. Sex on premises venues are for ... sex. For the sake of 98% of dance party goes who want to dance without seeing sex on dancefloors, etc. please just be content with keeping the sex to the sex venues.
"For the sake of 98% of dance party goes who want to dance without seeing sex on dancefloors, etc. please just be content with keeping the sex to the sex venues."
Spoken like a true prude. Typical of the draconian conservative fuddy duddy attitudes of Sydney in the year 2009.
Melbourne people are so more enlightened in these times.
I don't care if you think I am a prude, I just don't want to see that stuff at dance parties. I don't think that's what they are there for.
You have sex on premises venues for that. Plus, I am not a fuddy duddy. I'm 25. And I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are.
I also love Melbourne, but I don't think they are any more enlightened just because they allow you to get your dick sucked or arse ploughed in a license premises.
'For the sake of 98% of dance party goes who want to dance without seeing sex on dancefloors, etc. please just be content with keeping the sex to the sex venues.'
The sex was not on the dancefloor at Beyond but in a seperate dark room to the side, so was not in view of anyone outside. And don't forget Beyond is a leather and fetish party so the sleaziness is par for the course. Pity we have lost it at Inquisition Parties.
It was just nice to have it at the party is all I am saying and will definately head down south for their 10th Birthday party next Sept. More Sydney boys should do the same.
Dear non fuddy-duddy 25year old.
There is a time and a place for everything and my guess is that we will never be at the same parties.
However, if I and my friends choose to get a bit sexy, cruisey and look for someone to snogg and hopefully get our cocks sucked in the bathroom then so be it!
This is how I choose to enjoy myself, not all the time and not at Slide or Ivy for example.
Therefore if by chance I offend you I do not apologise and you and your nice friends are welcome to move to the otherside of the dance floor.
A party means different things to different people.
" I am not a fuddy duddy. I'm 25. And I'm entitled to my opinion as much as you are"
Being a fuddy duddy is not an exclusive reservation for old people. Young people today have some very closed shop opinions on things, very conservative and highly unenlightened. And that makes you a fuddy duddy regardless of your age in any era.
Ps - I love how you plucked out of thin air a figure of 98% of party goers not wanting sex at dance parties. Given that I go to just about all major dance parties I was wondering where I was when you were at the party surveying all it's attendees to arrive at this remarkable statistic. :P
Oh Jesus, the statistic wasn't meant to be interpreted as accurate, otherwise I would have referenced it.
I don't find myself closed minded, overly conservative, and most certainly not unenlightened. I just don't like being confronted with vulgar, public displays of sex in an environment which I don't think it's designed for. If they renamed 'dance party' to 'sex party', then I would have no leg to stand on.
We all appreciate that you may like to get your rocks off at a party, perhaps at a leather party or something like that, it may be more acceptable or more appropriate to expect to have sex in a licensed venue, but at regular, non fetish dance parties - it's not.
"but at regular, non fetish dance parties - it's not"
So "Sleaze" means exactly what in your eyes?
I'm with the earlier poster who says fuddiduddiness is not related to age. I do appreciate that our 25yo friend may not want to see sex at a party. I personally quite like to see it. I find it quite a liberating experience to cruise/be cruised by guys on a dancefloor who may not pay any attention whatsoever to me in another environment. The dancefloor has a completely different vibe to it comapred with an sop venue. The mere fact that it's so open and public is perhaps part of the allure. Should this thread perhaps move to the "Sleaze Ball Graffiti Wall", out of of site of the more standard "Party Graffiti Wall"? Those of us looking for a more actively sexy Sleaze can discuss it there without upsetting anybody else.
I hope that you allow yourself to stay open to spontaneous, spur of the moment, unguarded responses to some situations. As a 25 year old at my first Sleaze Ball, I was horrified and fascinated by the dark room area. I couldn't even think about going to a sex on premises venue. As a 40 year old, I'm much more relaxed about these things, occasionally use sex on premises venues, have had some spontaneous, enjoyable snogs with guys at Mardi Gras parade and parties, and have come away from those experiences not damaged, but really glad for the 'Oh why the fuck not' attitude of it all. I think back to how uptight I was, and wish I had been more relaxed when I was younger. I wouldn't have jumped everything that moved, but might sooner realised that being gay is not an affliction, and that it can be expressed in all sorts of ways by all sorts of people. And that makes the gay community great to be part of - we're police one another less, and allow one another to explore our fetishes and fantasies as we see fit, in safely negotiated, consenting scenes. I won't insist that you have sex at the parties. So please don't insist that I don't.
M from NQ: very well put. If anything we become more open to different ways of experiencing life as we get older. Nobody is forcing anybody do to anything; all that is being asked is that we respect each other's choices.
Fuddyduddy shmuddyduddy the fact is you are narrow minded and dull.if you dont like what you see, look away-just like the telly dear.Go to europe where there are plenty of nightclubs that also combine as sex on premises venues then you may learn to relax a little. Its only sex-most people do it-probably at least 98%!!
The lighting was awesome in the main room, but what was up with the other room upstairs? There were no lights and the room seemed to be located in an entrance hall. It was like dancing in a shoebox with through traffic. The music seemed great up there but I lasted 10 minutes before I wanted to go somewhere with atmosphere. I don't know why they even bothered having another room.
As I have gotten older....to 28 now...I realise that there is actually no nice/cool gay venue to go on Oxford street. Thats pretty sad. I gueess it goes in phases though and once it has gone completely dead a venue will completely revamp and then the rest will follow.

DONT hold your breath. I'm 57 and I can tell you right now that there has NEVER been a "cool" venue on Oxford St , they have all been dark , dank grubby and seedy.
There was a big police operation on Oxford Street this morning. At 8.30am I saw about 20 Police and 2 dogs walk up either side of the road doing a simultaneous sweep. At 11.30am they were still around stopping and searching people and apparently they were also checking side streets.
Good to see so much police resources wasted in the middle of the day and nothing when its needed when the f***wits and homophobes are out at night.

Well, yeah, I understand, actually; If I really dislike the venue, I'm out of there, too.
But you can't just write off the whole of Oxford St/Taylor Square -- there's alot of history there. It's just getting a bit dangerous, I have to admit.

I just get enough of Rob Davis. He's my number 1 favourite DJ at the moment--a skilled mixer with excellent taste in music. Every time I hear the guy, I am transported to Mardi Gras. Rob, you rock !!.
Also, credit to Greg Boladian for his fine work, as well.
I just love Sunday nights. Sometimes, a bit too much.

In regards to the last poster I make this comment ....
The reason you hear the same DJ in 2 venues on the same night is testimony to the appalling situation in clublife in the last 10 years.
In the 90's a venue hired a DJ for the WHOLE night - normally a 8 hour shift. The DJ didnt need to find a second venue to play at.
If clubs stopped this CRAZY habit of hiring DJ's in 2 or 3 hour sets and gave them longer shifts then you wouldn't have this disgusting situation we are in now where you could hear the same DJ even as many as three times in a night.
How I long for the good old days where one venue showcased one DJ on a particular night. At least you could plan your night accordingly and DJ's would have to hop and skip from venue to venue doing crappy 2 hour shifts and needing to find three jobs a night to make the evenings work financially worthwhile for them
i just noticed midnight shift is having "last dance" party on the oct long w/e.
honestly. i am very sorry to see this icon go. as the poster says, lots of friendship were formed there. this place holds many many unforgettable memories for me. :o(
on the other hand, there are many reasons why this place has to shut down. amongst them some not very fortunate decisions made by the management. the advertised performer (for this closing party) seems to me yet another one. i remember many great djs working at this club. i think they should be part of the last night. otherwise it will be just another "lets re-live" some arq divathon from 2002. looking at the poster, i am failing to find names such as chip, rob davis or others who actually deserve to be part of the LAST DANCE.....
(there is no doubt the advertised dj is excellent but he always came across as an ARQ icon. if arq closes one day - i cant see any midnight shift dj playing 12hr set over there.)
too true... as a DJ working 3-4 gigs per night, i'd much rather work at just the one venue for a minimum 5 hr set, than carry my DJ bag up and down the strip all nite long.
Also there's a culture of only promoters/club managers hiring only their friends (or people that put out, yes the casting couch is alive and well especially with some newer DJ's) regardless of talent level!
Yeah, you guys have a good point. DJs pay better sets when they have the time to feel the crowd out and give the crowd what it wants. Paul Goodyear was always in for the long haul and those were great nights.
I stil remember the Bachanalia nights. Long sets, many of them true journeys. That's why the older DJs still get most of my respect.
I do find it particularly frustrating that some of the older DJs do essentially get all the work in all the venues. It is also particularly frustrating when some promoters do 'keep it in the family' - one wonders whether some of the promotions managers in our clubs are really equipped to do their job properly. Maybe if things had been done differently then the shift would not be closing at the end of the month (with a rather pathetic final send off if you ask me... again, DJ's at the shift's last dance will be taxi'ed back and forth between the shift and Fierce Angel it seems)...
That said - I actually don't feel that one DJ should be playing the ENTIRE night in a club... God, could you imagine if someone was having an off week? you'd be stuck with them the whole night! Yuck!
On that note, I think its worthy to mention that while the clubs may be contributing to the problem, there is a huge consideration in the DJs that are hired. In terms of the new DJ's that are hitting the scene - there are one or two that show some real promise. The rest - often quite mediocre! Notice how NONE of the contenders from last year's DJ comp at arq are actually still working in the venue... The older DJ's are just streets ahead of the majority of new DJ's hitting our street because they actually want to do their job well - not just receive the attention behind the decks. Yeah, it's a rockstar lifestye - but ultimately, DJ's are there to do a job. I don't understand why promoters on our strip cannot see this! Master the skill - then think about going public.
So Flinders Hotel is closing, Beresford Hotel is up for sale, Shift is closing it's club down and repainting and recarpeting and reopening as a new bar. What is Oxford Street and surrounds coming too. It just ain't gunna be gay anymore.
Ok, so older DJs (or DJs who have been working longer) get most of the gigs, because they have been around longer. They have the experience, and a following, whereas newer ones don't.
Each DJ will have their day, and at the moment, the more experienced ones are in their prime. Soon enough, they will need to make room for new ones. Just be patient.
As for Fierce Angel and Shift - I love both line-ups, and they are the only parties I'm doing all weekend. Would love to do Sleaze, but after last year's awful mess, I won't be going again.

DJ PAUL GOODYEAR - Closing DJ of THE MIDNIGHTSHIFT CLUB wrap up party.
Shift signature WATER CURTAIN Laser show will be in operation every hour.
The Stardust day recovery at the shift starts at midday and goes to 8pm.
"Last Dance" starts at 8pm and goes to 8am the next morning.
Excuse my ignorance but it doesnt seem with those times that the venue will shut , throw out the stardust people , have a quick clean up and then re-open.
If this is not the case what's stopping the stardust people from staying in the venue and not paying for "Last Dance" , and what if the place is still packed at 8pm ? What about the people arriving at 8,9,10pm for "Last Dance" who didnt do Stardust who wont be able to get in cause the place is still full from the previous event ?
There seems to be a potential myriad of possible cocks ups waiting to happen here, can anybody in the know supply some feedback on this issue ?

From Stephen C posting on Same Same "hey guys... wanted to clear this up.. we issued 300 complimentary tickets to STARDUST. As this is our launch event we wanted everyone to come along and see what we have put together, this includes people who were undecided and those who couldn't manage the $80 tickets. Home holds 2100 people, so there is plenty to go around!"
Makes sense to get a broad cross section of people to enjoy a launch event if you intend to build on future ones.
Well I hope for the sake of those going to Stardust that they aren't going to have standing room only. Have been there when they "oversold" Homesexual and it was horrendous. Couldn't move.
Does anyone else smell a rat??? So lets get this straight , Stephen C posted this message yesterday - "hey guys... wanted to clear this up.. we issued 300 complimentary tickets to STARDUST. As this is our launch event we wanted everyone to come along and see what we have put together, this includes people who were undecided and those who couldn't manage the $80 tickets.
So because someone was undecided he just gives tickets away??? What about those of us who are still undecided but have purchased a ticket, is he going to refund our money and give us a free ticket?? As for giving tickets away to those who cant afford it, here's a brain wave idea , why dont your try making it affordable in the first place, or did you assume that because ToyBox wasn't on you could try and cash in and charge premium price!!! As for the 5 free drinks for a ticket, isnt this a breach of the liquor licencing laws???
I will not go to any Home based parties because I used to always buy my ticket until I got to know the scene and at one party I was the only one out of my entire group of friends that paid for my ticket. How fair is that???
Sure I understand that there has to be benefits to being a promoter but I wouldn't take in one hand and give in the other. Heres an idea - make the ticket cheaper!!!
I have been to my fair share of parties and the only one I will ever go to now is Toybox. Its expensive but you get what you pay for. If a party has a wow factor then there is no need to give away tickets and you can pretty well charge what you like. In my opinion Toybox is the only place that does that for me due to the venue, sound, people, lights and style fo music.
Well, I think the point is - Stardust DIDN'T sell out... the reason there are no tickets left is because they were GIVEN away...
It just seems odd that one week they are desperate to get your business (5 drink tickets worth fifty bucks?) - and then all of a sudden next week a competition is run where there are several hundred winners and now all of a sudden there is a waitlist (hmmmmm?)... we'll see...
many people may not decide to take the offer of the freebies. Seems to be only the main floor and rooftop open which i guess would decrease capacity somewot.
stephen has sold 1800 tickets. frisky holds 1100. toybox grew to 2600. he has given away 300 tickets to show people what stardust is all about. i think thats actually very generous. and 1800 for his first party is quite an achievement. everyone in know is going, and we're going to enjoy ourselves! all of your complainers (probably promoters running events on the same day), get back in your box, or go back to melbourne.
Does anyone know why New Mardi Gras has put a deposit on and is holding the venue - Big Top at Luna Park - for both weekends next year over the first weekend of the parade and the 2nd weekend of Mardi Gras - the party weekend???? The Whole Venue is being held.
It's the right of the promoter to allocate comp tickets as they see fit.
I dont know why it's a point of continued discussion - it baffles me actually.
I'm sure if you wanted to go to the party and were on the receiving end of a freebie you wouldnt be complaining.
sounds like sour grapes to me.
Not really ... they've promised "an event". They haven't yet said what that might be. It would be great if it were something other than a party, leaving the "real" party as something to look forward to the following Saturday. Perhaps there could be entertainment in Hyde Park, like is done during the Sydney Festival - sort of a "Stars Come Out" under the stars. I really don't think we need yet another party, particularly when "Harbour Party" (or whatever it's now being called) will still be on the Sunday (correct me if I'm wrong on this).
If anyone is friends with a particular drag queen on facebook you might be aware of a certain status update that was posted today in which herself, and a host of other people, managed to slag Prada Clutch in every which way possible.
I will preface this post by stating that I AM NOT A DRAG QUEEN, nor do I know any personally.
I have to say upon reading this cavalcade of abuse I was nothing short of shocked. 64 comments made in support of the status updater in question - even though, from what I can gather, most of the people who have commented on the aforementioned status don't actually know the drag queen being attacked.
All I can say is - what a SHITTY CRITTER. never have I seen such abhorrent behaviour from someone in our world. His/her comments run on and CONTINUALLY slam the younger drag queen, and he/she doesn't hold back. I have to wonder how it has got to this stage really - whether the comments made in support of him/her have really gone to his/her head a little too much already.
This kind of behaviour is not at all appropriate, or tolerable, in my opinion - one wonders whether it is a matter of time before he/she eventually drifts out of the spotlight as a result of this inflamed ego (or whether this has actually already happened to a certain extent and he/she is beginning to realise it)... I will no longer support the person in question as a result of this. Such hostility and anger are not wanted. NEXT PLEASE! No more glitter bombs!
Hope to see some of you for a dance this Sunday at Stardust. My warm-up mix is now online - with a small taste of things to come. It's going to be a great party - lots of surprises in store.
Well maybe they have finally come to their senses and realised how much money can be made out of such a fantastic venue. So long as they put something on as good as Toybox.
Not really ... doesn't seem to make business sense to sell 1800 tickets, then give away 300. It's only going to upset those that paid the money, and let's face it ... they're running a business. Why give away what you can sell? Unless they were so far behind in their numbers at the time the competition was run that they felt "charity" was going to give them some cred and fill the place up, I don't see the point.
It certainly looks like there will be plenty of people at the Stardust. My previous experience with Home night club has always been overcrowded. Yes, it is a big venue, it can hold up to 2100 patrons. If 2100 is going to be evenly spread over the 3/4 levels, that will be fine. However, that is never going to happen. It always ended up the main floor is completely "unmovable/un-danceable. Very uncomfortable. In my opinion..
thats great, wonder how much you had to pay to license all the tracks??
did you get rights to use them if its on sale??
==
cant wait for daywash. its gonna be a great party. and its genuinely SOLD OUT! thank god i have got my ticket. coming from asia i had buy it in advance. glad i didnt wait
see thats a proof stardust is a popular party. it sold out twice already!!!
bad dog, dirty, daywash & q bar rising sold out only once....which proves theyre not as popular as stardust.
"thats great, wonder how much you had to pay to license all the tracks??
Cynical at its' best."
Unfortunately not, it's a reality that a lot of people who post mixes are either not aware of or ignore. Obviously there are those who do have all the required licences etc, but posting something like this under your name does make it easier for agencies to track you down to check...
I agree. This person’s ego has become way out of control, fanned by his “vitual” facebook friends who tell him he is fabulous not matter how defamatory his status updates are. I am a close friend of a professional drag queen and I can confirm that the majority of the drag performers in town are really over her rants and hideous abuse, which is obviously based on self esteems issues and jealousy. Lets hope he gets some help.x

Stephen C sent out FAQ email today for Stardust. Gosh he really has outdone yourself. If you are copying the FAQ’s from Toybox it would have been a good idea to remove this one.
Getting There by Train: Catch a train from wherever you are to Milsons Point Station. Get off and take a five minute walk down the hill. Keep the Sydney Harbour Bridge on your left hand side and follow the signs to Luna Park.
So he copied the FAQ questions from a Toybox add, who cares. Why does everyone alway bag the Homesexual parties and now Stardust (before it's even been on) I have been to heaps of his parties and mostly have a great time. well done Stephen for putting on great parties and stuff all that bag you. I would like to see them do better.
Most people these days can see through the hyped up marketing of homesexual and now stardust.
* fastest selling party ever
* Over 2000 gays from all over the world
* First time performing in Australia
* Exclusive
* Tribute to (not actually performing)
* Arrive early to avoid missing anything
* Sold out, limited tix, ant scalping tix etc etc etc
At least he's stopped calling every long weekend a "Bank Holiday Weekend" (which is what they're called in the UK). It was rather annoying when he did that for Anzac Day.
She is a SHITTY CRITTER.... Anyone who uses the popularity to bully someone like that is a complete disgrace..... I have been to Venue where she DJ's.... she may have support on facebook.... but this is not reflected into bringing people into the Venue..... When will the promoters wake up and get a better DJ........ Hope the nine lives of the hateful Kitty cat are almost up.
... sums on the extent the Australian Government would be financially better off if we conceded that criminalisation of drug use was a lost cause and lifted the prohibition.
OMG some of you cats are VICIOUS!
A party is a party!
Listen to you all whinge when they are no longer on due to this lack of support, whingeing and complaining!!
The majority of tonight's line up is why my friends and I stopped going. It is a shame the management saw fit to use them for the last event! Paul Goodyear is fantastic but I think it much better to stay away and remember the shift in its hey day rather being reminded why you stopped supporting it.
Very disappointing and didn't even come close to the standards set by Toybox and Frisky.
Stephen has delivered a mediocre knockoff. It was lucky 300 tickets were given away because without them, dispite reportedly being sold out 3 times there, the place was not packed.
My friends and I received a free ticket so we got exactly what we paid for and were able to leave during Matt's set without feeling ripped off apart from wasting our time.
Matt played some great trance tracks and given his experience did a reasonable job but it reminded me of a Dan Murphy set.
OK just got home from Arq. Great night considering I was too lazt and unineterested in getting tickets for anything else. But oh my god...the place wreaked of bad b.o. The number of time I had to move somewhere else because someone had obviously been dancing for the last 24 hours non stop. Perhaps we need the b.o. police not the booze police.
I'd love to see the end result of all this waste of police time and tax payer money. The ombudsman report a couple of years back showed that most of the charges end up being dropped or people cop small fines. Why on earth they don't direct these resources to stopping the drugs coming in the first place is beyond belief... then again it's exactly what this stupid, media obsessed, waste of space government is all about.
Hey all,
I was one of the many who had a free ticket to Stardust and I did enjoy myself, but the one bad thing was the upstairs was a little bit too on the light side, the lasers were great, but I would not pay 80 dollars for what you can normally get at home,
There was so much on this weekend and I was only doing Sleaze but I did enjoy myself at Home and I took a good friend with me and one of the best things that I meet some new people as my normal crowd were not there,
Well done for copying the idea, but all you need to do now is refine it,
I'm a trance music lover from way back, having attended many events in the UK and Australia over the years. So I was looking forward to Stardust as an alternative to Frisky and Toybox. Without a doubt, I have to say it was the worst 'trance event' I have ever been to! A few much-too-short trance classics jarringly mixed with camp/handbag numbers does not create the 'journey' that trance should be. The final DJ was a lot better but we were over it by then. Don't waste your money (unfortunately we paid for tickets!) next time.
Hi Matt (if you're reading this) I loved your set at Stardust, You played a track that I've been searching for for years, hopefully you can tell me what it was.
The only vocals in it were "you are my religion" and maybe they are Madonna's vocals but I'm not sure.
Sad that the upstairs of the shift is closing as a dance venue but very happy to see a massive turn-out last night and a party that rocked. Great work Clarence & crew! The music was up, the place was buzzing, if it didn't sell out it had to have been close. Even downstairs had a queue down the street at 10:30pm. Thanks guys, fantastic job.
Easily the most fun I've had in a long time. Hot crowd, happy and friendly, first class music. Let's annexe Chinese Laundry and make it our own, or failing that hope the Rising and Rogue boys can organise another party there soon
Enjoyed Stardust. Good to great music/lasers. A B+ for effort. But my opinion is that trance doesn't really work in a small venue. You need a space at least the size of the Metro or ideally the Big Top at Luna Park or the Horden Pavillion to really appreciate the whole Trance party/lights and music experience.
yeah, stardust was ok... the lasers were great... that said - I didn't see who was playing the middle set, but it was a bit forgettable - a bit too cheesy... my idea of trance is that it needs to be pretty - if it wasn't for the final DJ, who made alot of better music choices, I would have to say that it was a below average party...
also, the sound in that room on the second level was totally awful... home is apparently a 'world class venue'... not so much me thinks...
Where does it say that home is a world class venue??? That is completely laughable! If it is because it is next to the water then that is rediculous. Sydney needs to stop relying on the water..
Each to his own but personally I thought the second DJ was way better than the last. For me the last 2 hours just dragged on but I suppose i had done the party the night before so it could just be I was tired.
Can't comment on the first DJ as I only saw the end of his set.
Upstairs was OK the couple of times I went up there, it was funny to watch the passers by below looking up and trying to work out what the hell was going on.
In my opinion Home was a world class venue when it was built. The view from the upstairs terrace was (and still is) beautiful at night. Lots of colour and movement. It's location next to the water does add a special something. It has been remodelled so often internally that it has lost a lot of what it had.
what a weekend! me & my mates have finally recovered, joined forces and thought we would let you know what we think. we did our research and me & my mates are bringing you top 5 failure parties of the weekend.
1: stardust (the hype, multiple "sold outs" and still empty)
2: bananas in cabanas (unfortunate weather, but a great concept - are girls really allowed to swim naked there? wow)
3: wooclub (female bar staff at a "private" party?)
4: dtpm (straight straight straight)
5: sleaze (the police & dogs were having great time!)
stardust was empty???? wtf?? the dance floor was absolutely packed from about 1.45 until at least 6pm. there are a few videos on youtube. can't believe you would say it was empty....
I agree, was first class when it was opened you could get on the second level and dance and look down was stunning. They have made it look like a dinghy manacle even worse. I went to Stardust on Sunday it was busy the music was great the floor wes packed the lights fantastic and would go again had a ball. Shame some one took such a beautiful place and destroyed it with the renovations.
yes i know...but if you dont want to hear any handbag music at a gay trance party then you are dreaming. Im actually the most macho gay you could ever meet and i dont mind it.
The Imperial Hotel will be open by the end of November, owner Shadd Danesi has guaranteed — irrespective of the outcome of his court case against the City of Sydney.
re: "<sni> Let your local member know that you do not approve and also let the local member of the opposition know. While it is unlikely that these laws will be changed you should let the politicians know wheat you think."
That sounds good in theory but to do so, means declaring to the establishment that you do drugs ... and that sort of thing can be used against yoo. I would rather see the police actually play it down (not that they read Pinkboard, unfortunatey). Maybe only gay cops should attend these events (and without dogs).
First and most importantly drugs are illegal and can have negative health and social impacts on your life. Just because you have used illicit substances in the past and have not had any negative consequences doesn't mean you never will (mind you this also goes for crossing the road so be careful!)
Second if you don't like the use of dogs or feel that the law needs to be changed then you need to do something about it. Neither of the major political parties are likely to relax the current situation so consider voting for the Greens, other minor parties or independents at the next election. Bitching from behind a computer screen doesn't achieve any thing.
With respect to avoiding getting caught by drug detection dogs there are a couple of things to keep in mind:
* If you don't have any drugs on you can¡¦t get caught. As said in the post above take them before you get there or don't take them at all.
* If you are going to take stuff with you then plan your night and only take what you need. Don't take extras for "in case" or for friends. If you get caught the more you have the worse it is. Explaining that it¡¦s not all for you in the eyes of the police makes you a dealer.
* Take the time to prepare your stash. Using latex gloves put it in a condom or sealable bag. Spray the outside of that with a strong alcohol based cologne and then put that in yet another bag and scent that again. If you're keen do it a third time but be aware this will make a larger parcel that is harder to hide.
* Hide your stuff well. You don't have to make it easy for them to find if they search you. It¡¦s up to you come up with your own hidey spots but we are lucky that a lot of our parties involve costumes so that can be handy. If the police ask you what you¡¦ve got you don¡¦t have to admit to having anything but be warned they can be very convincing that it¡¦s easier to just come clean and hand over. Handing over is the easiest result for them and it won¡¦t get you into any less trouble if you deny, they search and then find something. Police are not allowed to cavity search you, that can only be done by a doctor in a hospital. Believe it or not the police don't really enjoy being bastards if they can't find anything on a reasonably thorough search then they are unlikely to push too far. If you are feeling violated or uncomfortable say so and ask for them to stop and speak with their superior. If you are searched and don't have anything on you then you should register your feelings and complaint with the Council of Civil Liberties or the Police Ombudsman. Its only when you register a complaint that these people that accurate statistics are collected. You should also make a formal complaint with police service themselves.
* If you get caught you are unlikely to be taken away. Normally you will be given a court attendance notice. The less you say or admit to now the more your solicitor has to work with later. Find someone good to represent you but keep in mind that as scary as and as serious as this is it¡¦s not the end of the world and the courts deal with these things every day. It is the magistrate you will need to explain yourself to not the police.
* Turn up with a plan to avoid the dogs. The police are only allowed to search you if the dog sits down next to you. Keep moving the faster you get past them the less chance the dog has a chance to do that. Simply sniffing you as you walk past does not warrant an appropriate indication. When you get there hang back and see how many dogs are in action and where they are. As best you can avoid cues where they have a chance to walk the dog along behind you. If you can¡¦t get straight through ticketing then its best to get in to the middle of things, the police and dogs will work the edge of the crowd. Have your ticket, keys, phone and wallet out so you are not held up at security. If it¡¦s daytime wear sunnies so you can keep an eye out for trouble without being obvious. If the dogs are on the inside as is now becoming common pretend to take a phone call or have some other reason to move away quickly. If you have a friend who doesn't have anything on them have them run decoy and get between you and the dog as your heading the other way. They won't like your friend patting the dog but it¡¦s always a valuable distraction.
* Avoid situations where the police can approach un-noticed. Sitting on the grass at festivals or standing in line waiting for the toilets give the dog plenty of chance to pick up a scent and the first thing you know about it you're being tapped on the shoulder. Sitting on trains and busses on the way to a festival is also a big danger, by far the best idea is to get cab it or walk the last bit if possible. They also like working the smoking areas so be warned.
* The dogs have very sensitive sense of smell but in reality are a pretty blunt instrument for real drug detection. The dogs don't care about drugs for them the whole thing is a game. They are trained to recognise certain specific smells and are then rewarded for sitting down as they're trained to. To them it¡¦s no more significant than fetching a ball and dropping it when hey bring it back. While they are well trained they are also easily distracted and tire quickly. If the dogs have been there for a while its more likely the police have are using them for "high visibility policing" rather than expecting to catch significant numbers of people. I would like some community minded person to take a box or two of Go Cat to the next party and distribute it widely where the dogs are working. The one failing of Labradors is that they are always hungry and that amount of more desirable scent will take their mind off what they should otherwise be doing. Nothing illegal with this but it could certainly be considered a form of passive community resistance ƒº
The above comments should not be taken as advice on how to break the law or in any way suggesting you should do so. It is simply to give you some insight on how to avoid finding yourself in trouble with the law.
I personally feel that the name Satrdust or Toybox with its associated cartoonish advertising suggests it will be a more silly/cheeky kind of night with some cheesy vocal trance. I dont think being gay means you have to listen to cheesy trance though....
Well that depends on how you see things.
Here's my take:
At the expense of a community event. Bravo.
The line-up at the Dome on Saturday night was exactly the same as the local line-up at the private money making event the following night. Shame on whomever allowed this at NMG, because the community event clearly suffered on Sat night in the Dome and ultimately the community at large has suffered.
Daywash was packed, a bit too packed, but the music was awful! Nice vibe crowd, but very trashy. It was definitely like Phoenix had just moved venue. Fierce Angel had the best music by far, and was a nice mixed crowd. Well dressed, not very trashy looking, it made my weekend. Then Last Dance really hit it home well. Music was great, and a very nice crowd - the busiest I've ever seen the Shift. The last few DJs were absolutely rocking in the main room, and even the front room was jumping.
"While they are well trained they are also easily distracted and tire quickly".
A dog went up to my partner, had a sniff and then kept moving. It ended up being more interested in a garden bed and the police poked around in there for a bit before realising it was nothing. Fail!
The ombudsmans report is compelling reading. The report found that most persons who were found to be carrying drugs had very small amounts of cannabis for personal use. Only 19 people from more than 10,000 indicated by a drug dog were successfully prosecuted for ‘drug supply’ offences, and only three of them received custodial sentences. This was despite an investment of many hundreds of thousands of dollars in the drug detection dog program.
Well, the knives are out as per usual. Some of the comments here and on Facebook makes me wonder if those writing even went.... totally doubt it.
Stardust ran very well. It was the first of a new concept, on a weekend when there was a lot on, and still managed a good numbered, well behaved crowd who went off in both dance spaces. Yes, there could have been more things added but obviously a sensible commercial decision was made to concentrate on the most important aspects (music and lasers) for the first one given the competition of other parties held that day and night.
I thoroughly enjoyed 'playing' with a system I hadn't worked before and had heard varying reports as to its quality prior to getting my hands on it. The main room system is a very good system and was suited to trance quite well - albeit with a new looking eq shape to the norm there (as would be expected). It has enormous power that needs to be controlled by good DJs watching their levels and selling their music. Thanks to Matt, Matty and Tim for doing just that. You made it easier to make that sound.
Thanks also to Chip, Kitty and Justin for what turned into a very camp balcony second damce area.
Cheesy up on the balcony? Absolutely.... appropriate
The music at Last Dance was spot on. I got there just after 9 to a line down the street to get in. Greg B was in the lounge area and when that red headed DJ started in the main room he made sure we knew we were there to party. Ive heard Luke Leal play lots of times over the years but would say that was the best ive ever heard him play - so much fun. Kklass were good along with all the boys in the lounge. I was buggered by the time Paul Goodyear was on and only stayed a short time after - but wow.
I enjoyed it the most out of any party ive experienced over the last 12 months because all the djs were blending both new and old tracks together, not just new new new or old old old. It was great I don't remember sitting down at any point in the night... Had the music been as good on past weekends there im sure it wouldn't have closed. Oh well
Can I ask if your partner had something on him ? if so how was it packed ?
As most would have had something it seems pretty hit and miss and I am just wondering if its how its packed ?
is cannabis easier for the dogs to sniff out than pill or
powders ?
It was the best party that I have been for a while. Having the place pumping all night both in the lounge and club section. At one point, the lounge area was pumping hands in the air beats faster thatn the club side. all my friends were there, we dance to new songs and sang to the old classics. Each of the 11 djs seems to out do each other. The athmosphere of the place was happy with everyone just enjoying the night. The sign on wall, photo souvenir and display of old posters around the palce all adds up to making this event a night to remember.
I'm not going to give any advice but if you are worried about drug dogs then you should have a look at the ombudsmans report (just read the executive summary) at http://www.ombo.nsw.gov.au/show.asp?id=431
According to the report the most commonly detected drug through the review period was cannabis, which was located in approximately 84% of all incidents where one or more drugs were detected. This was followed by ecstasy (8.5%) and meth/amphetamine (7.7%).
The other thing to note is the most common place where indications occurred was public transport (62.9%), followed by licensed premises (20.8%), road/street/mall (11.7%), and dance parties (2.4%).
No drugs were located in almost three-quarters of searches following indications, raising questions about the accuracy of drug detection dogs. This in turn casts doubt on the legitimacy of police relying on the dogs to determine whether they may reasonably suspect that a person is in possession of a prohibited drug.
Tired of people complaining about police dogs. I love them walking about. They are really friendly and the police even let you pat them if you are nice. If you dont have anything on you, then you wont have anything to keep complaining about.
I just don't want to go to a party with a bunch of police intimidating me. I go to have fun, not to have big brother and their dogs watching and sniffing me like I'm some kind of criminal.
What kind of complacent society have we become where we think its ok for police to take over our events, use dogs to sniff our crotches and take people off for strip searches without supervision?
It's not OK. The dog system does not work. It's a complete waste of money.
And its about time people accept that THE ONLY reason the dogs exist is because its a stunt from our politicians so that they can feed the media with the "we're tough on crime" bullshit.
If they were serious about getting rid of drugs and if the dogs actually worked they'd be using them down at the wharfs and stopping the stuff get in in the first place!
I totally agree with you, don't understand how another event chooses the same DJ line up on the same weekend and thinks it will go unoticed. It appears that it may possibly be the same person who organises the event, if thats the case who is milking it for thier own benefit? Or are they the same person responsible for the line up at the dome?
I dunno....just my 10 cents , your comment drew attention to this and got me thinking......highlights one person in mind.
The community always suffers from greedy people that take advantage of it....shame
"I dunno....just my 10 cents , your comment drew attention to this and got me thinking......highlights one person in mind.

I can honestly say the people associated with the running of Extra Dirty are some of the most wonderful, generous and community minded individuals in the entire sydney scene.
I'm disgusted that anyone could even begin to tarnish their images by calling them greedy for simply putting on a party using pretty much the same DJ's they use all year round!!!
"I can honestly say the people associated with the running of Extra Dirty are some of the most wonderful, generous and community minded individuals in the entire sydney scene"
I don't know them personally and I'm sure they are wonderful people however profitible parties do not include generosity or being community minded. Having the exact djs play on the night does give the community the wrong impression especially when its on the same weekend. If people are perceiving this, what does this say to you?
There is no shame in the truth
"If people are perceiving this, what does this say to you?
There is no shame in the truth"
It says people are cynical bitches who sprout bullshit about innocent people simply because they're too stupid to see nothing untoward has happened.
Instead of a blinkered perception look at the facts, those DJ's play for Dirty and Extra Dirty all year round. There's usually an Extra Dirty every long weekend regardless of what Mardi Gras do. Finally, it was NMG who hired them to do Sleaze so maybe you should point your bile at NMG instead of hard working people who contribute shitloads to the community all year round.
Just saw the F*cking sick line up for FMF!!!
As with Oakenfold last year, i hope some of the DJ's there can make it to the MG Party!!
What a line up it will be!!!
Would be a very clever idea for MG to share costs with some of these other events for the DJ's and it would also ensure a bigger crowd for the after party (ya know, the one that is a week after the parade!!)
Not sure I understand why the MG party has been moved from the parade weekend to the next weekend. I was planning to come back to Sydney for it, but now that it's on a weekend later, it clashes with another major commitment and I won't be able to make it. Also, I can't see how interstate and overseas visitors who come for the parade will be staying for an extra week just for the party. So, please explain, how will this make NMG more money? Is the committee that made this stupid decision living in a dreamworld? *lol*
NMG have already admitted to this cock up. Parade and party was supposed to coincide with Atlantis ship arriving in Sydney on Sat Feb 28 but Mardi Gras had booked Fox Studios for Sat March 7 and when realised their mistake Fox Studios had been already booked for Sat 28 by Antique Roadshow. So they decided on the split and put parade on Sat 28 for OS visitors coming by ship and will hold an after parade party at Luna Park for them. With the main party still going ahead on March 7.
Will have to wait and see how it pans out for them, lets hope it works.
I heard somewhere NMG has booked Luna Park for both weekends. Could this be for after parade party and a recovery party the following weekend (possibly Stardust)?
If this is so it would put an end to Toybox recovery party there after the main party.
If Stardust happened at Luna Park I really don't think people would support it. - that promoter's relationship with Home Nightclub is too strong to move any of his parties within sydney away from it...
I had also heard that NMG had booked both weekends at Luna Park. Here's hoping they give us SOMETHING NEW, and not the strikingly similar party lineups that have been used in many of the previous years... Maybe this cock up will actually force them to put some effort into their party planning and help them to think outside the square... I will gladly support these community events as long as they do not provide me with the same old same old... And before I get slammed, I concede that party lineups have not been identical - but you have to admit there has been alot of overlap recently...
A question from a member at the Mardi Gras AGM did elicit some information about what is being planned for the smaller event on the night of Mardi Gras Parade. While the plan is still to put on the main party on the following Saturday on the Parade night, or so the AGM was told, the intention is to play around with the party format somewhat to produce an event that is appropriate for gay and lesbian parents to bring their children to. Just what that means was not expanded upon.
It seems to me an odd change to make for the reasons:
*the after parade party starts at about 11pm and here I'm remembering that kids have an earlier bedtime
*although they have been getting a lot of media attention of late, gay and lesbian parents are a very small percentage of the community (one survey I read said only 2%)
*the after parade party has traditionally been a somewhat ribald, sexy event put on after a parade with adult issues of sexuality at the forefront.
Mardi Gras' plans to hire out Luna Park may fit in with a desire to make the after parade party more family friendly, stymying Toybox along the way. The rides and variety of indoor spaces may be part of how they will cater to the more varied crowd.
My personal opinion is that if more is needed in terms of community celebrations appropriate for families then it should be done as part of daytime events such as fair day. Especially if the number of people who benefit will be modest it would be a shame to alter an environment created for late-night, uninhibited adult party going.
Maybe they will open it up early for parents and children to go along to for a few hours till say around 9pm.
Hall would only music for the kids plus the rides.
Then to be ready for the night crowd.
The big party the week after as far as I can see has to be something MEGA.
Lots of Halls, big name DJ's , big name Guests otherwise if its not appealing and is a cut down version of what past parties have been then there is the possibility of a big disaster on their hands.
I heard the Luna Park party is for the Cruise people ? understand that as well. But anyone else who is at the Parade and all pumped up will be mighty tempted to go to any Party afterwards. What a downer to be just going home !
Anyway my gang has already decided we are only going to
the Party a week later so no Parade.
Unfortunately with the Cruise people that could mean a couple of thousand less going to the week later party as well. A lot of tourists do not get 4 weeks annual leave like we do in Australia. Some only get 2 weeks so these people may not want to be hanging around another week nor be bothered coming back to Sydney just for another party especially if they attend the one at Luna Park.
What do you mean booked Luna Park??? Mardi Gras couldn't afford to book Luna Park - it's too expensive. No way have they booked it for Sunday March 7 - Toybox have a five year booking.
This has to be the only way NMG can go with the main party a week later.
Big name DJ's ( but I do prefer our locals ) and big name guests and as many Halls as possible to cater for most popular dance styles and any other things they can add in.
Already the couple of thousand cruising tourists most likely wont stay for 2 party weekends as previously mentioned ( some only get 2 weeks holidays etc ) so thats quite a few who wont be attending the big party a week later so need to attract more people.
"Already the couple of thousand cruising tourists most likely wont stay for 2 party weekends... so thats quite a few who wont be attending the big party a week later so need to attract more people."
I think we need to move beyond the fact that a mistake has been made and start focussing on the positives of the parade and party spilt so that we can all make the most of it.
The party does not need the cruise ship to be successful - it's never been here before so if not one of the passengers stays until the following weekend the party will still be ok.
Conversely, the parade weekend is going to be heaving and you pretty much bet that both the yet to be announced after parade event and harbour party are going to be sell outs.
I for one, like many people I know, are now going to attend both the parade and party the following week. Something that hasn't happened in a long, long time. And I'm just a spectator. I know many parade participants and volunteers are simply relieved.
Certainly the mistake made is not without risk but maybe, just maybe, something magical will come out of it...
As the David Guetta produced, Black Eye Peas track says... I got a feeling...
Sigh .............. why the sarcasm ? or is it just natural bitchiness ?
Did I say my gang would affect any party we didnt attend ? did we ? huh huh huh ?
No I didnt.
As for music for the kids , have you ever heard of MTV ?
tune in one day and you will hear the music the kids listen to today. I dont see a problem at all if it is something like opening up Luna Park ( if that is where its going to be held ) and giving the kids some fun with a big hall playing as you so sacastically put it - Kylie,
Britney , Barbie summer hits. What is wrong with that ? you wont be able to go , it wont affect your going out plans so why the big MEOW ?
My gang..........about 10 and all I stated was we had decided to go the party only thats on a week after the Parade. You will find a lot of people will decide to pick only one of the weekends to go out. My gang consists of intersate people and they have said they cant afford to hang around Sydney for an extra week nor afford to buy 2 lots of airfares for each weekend.
Funny how someone will post saying no to a post but then putting their view as what will happen.
Yes the cruise people are new but they are the same tourists who would have come here anyway but instead of arriving on a boring aircraft they get to arrive in style. The post did not talk about the mistake that was made only you have.
And thats great that you and your friends will be doing both. People I know cant afford both and so will decide.
So yes its going to be a very big risk. Too much on offer after the Parade "could" draw people away from the following weekends party and that could put NMG in trouble if they dont get the numbers.
And another thing you seemed to not read is other posts are saying the party the week after has to offer something to attract and David Guetta is hopefully only the beginning.
I'm merely a NMG member but I can recommend their VIP viewing area at Taylor Square (if you can afford it).
What it allows you to do is have a meal before the parade and rock up to the fenced-off area say 15 minutes before the parade starts. They have an undercover bar and some finger food on sale and you get a very comfortable space with its own loos and you can enter and exit as much as you like as they give you a wristband.
Not something you wanna do every year but yeah, it's great and you're not exhausted when the parade finishes.
What an awesome night it was at the reopening of Ceasars last night. Thank you to Stuart and Andrew, the staff, and especially Mark Alsop and Justin Scott for the music and the memories. Sandy Bottom and Penny D bounced off each other brilliantly for the shows.
So many old faces turned out for a fun, camp, happy and, most importantly, safe night.
Im wondering if there is any truth in the real reason for the splitting of the parade party over 2 weekends.
I have heard from a supposedly good source that the reason for the split was that due to the studios already been booked for the night, the studios were not available for the party, so they had to re schedule the party to the following week.
However looking at Playbills bookings that doesn't seem to be the case.
Back when NMG admitted to their mistake they did name the thing that is booked and it was either a collectibles or antique or craft fair ? I cant remember which but back then I searched it and they had their website up with the date.
And no worries about your supposed good source , NMG have
clearly stated this in the gay papers etc and they were correct. Someone forgot to check the availability of Fox
a week earlier than planned but coinciding with the arrival of the Gay Cruise. Advertising and other commitments had all been done when the error was discovered.
I actually emailed NMG saying maybe they could offer $'s to swap dates. They replied unfortunately the Fair that is on was huge and had already done their advertising and taking bookings etc.
"Yes the cruise people are new but they are the same tourists who would have come here anyway but instead of arriving on a boring aircraft they get to arrive in style."
So no tourists are coming by plane? Don't you think the cruise ship will encourage more tourists to come?
And last time I looked the parade was free so if you live in Sydney its just the cost of public transport and perhaps drink and food... unless you want grand stand seating of course.
And yup I believe David Guetta is only the beginning. New Mardi Gras have been putting the word out that big announcements are coming our way.
i dont understand - if someone asks about a track why everyone assumes they are after some cheesy circuit tralala diva drag queen tralala jukebox music?
as a matter of fact, there were new mixes released around april this year. YASS - When Doves Cry
lots of mixes by: muthafunkaz, dj spen, thommy, original, dub, instrumental on labels such as d:vision, defected in the gouse, code red and many more...
some gays are into good music good music.
I really wonder if people read an entire post before commenting ?
The comment was made in another post that numbers may be up for the parade/parties as we now have the cruise people arriving.
The reply was just stating that its the same tourists but instead of the boring plane ride they cruise in . Of course others will still be coming in by plane. I work in that Industry. The Cruise will encourage more of course but certainly not thousands more.
And so glad the last time you looked the Parade was free.
So is sleeping in the gutters but I doubt the tourists will be doing that. Was talking about the extra accommodation required to be able to stay for the 2 weekends but most wont because countries like the USA only get 2 weeks annual leave and a lot of them head off to other parts of Australia or NZ. I seriously doubt the majority will be hanging around just for a dance party when the Europeans put on just as good if not better dance party anyway.
The only disappointment to tourists if they have flown in is where will they Party after the Parade ? if Luna Park is booked just for the Cruise people then the tourists will just be left with disgusting Oxford St. Hopefully tourists will also be able to get a ticket for Luna Park if they want to Party.
Which is just leaving the main party a week later for the locals and inter-staters and those tourists who can stay or come back to Sydney for it.
Hopefully David Guetta is only the beggining....its the only way NMG can ensure big numbers at the week after
Party and to bring in the big $'s spent the week before.
I need to find out the title of the song that is feature at the Stardust website www.stardustparty.com
under the "gallery" ... part of the lyrics... "you're half the world away..."
As I said, constantly whining about it now wont change it... whats done is done.
Now moving on - from todays Mardi Gras email...
David Guetta will be DJing in the Royal Hall of Industries on the night. We'll be announcing our headliner for the Hordern Pavilion later in the year. You won't be disappointed!
Tickets to Mardi Gras Party will go on sale in November.
The Land and Environment Court has granted the Imperial Hotel a 12-month trial for more than 700 patrons on a Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. The ruling, handed down this morning, brings to an end a long-running court battle between Imperial owner Shadd Danesi and the City of Sydney. The city had limited Danesi to a maximum 400-plus patrons at the refurbished Erskineville Rd hotel.
Danesi has already publicly stated he intends on opening the Imperial next month – with or without the increase in numbers.
Yes it looks like NMG can share costs of a few of the DJ's with Future Music Festival and have them perform at Mardi Gras. If this is so the Party will be huge....getting all excited now.
Can someone from Rising explain it for me. Tickets haven't gone on sale yet for Daywash 2, but SX and Samesame both say they have sold out 1st 2nd release and only 3rd release $50 tickets are left. Sold out before they went on sale?
From Murray & Ken at Gusto, we would like to send out a MASSIVE thank you for making Fierce Angel at Ivy the most talked about party of the October long weekend, at Sydney's hottest venue - Ivy. We're very excited to announce our plans for more parties coming up.
Sunday 22 November, 2009 @ Ivy:
Mark Doyle (UK) & Peyton (UK - Live PA)
Perhaps the 'first' and 'second' release lines were left over from the last party. Most likely there's just one release at one price. Particularly after it's success, there is no need to discount to get earlybird buyers.
I believe the 1st/2nd release tix were available via their Facebook group. We got ours from Bang Clothing this morning, ticket numbers just above 1000. Capacity is 1500 so will be the hottest event in town
Currently listening to: Thriller (Original Club Mix) - Allstars
What a "load" of shit, there is no way an event like Daywash can sell out their 1st and 2nd release tickets in 1 hr, this is according to facebook.
I wish these promoters would just put their cocks away, I dont care who's is bigger. Stop trying fooling us with these outrageous claims to make your events look "better".
an excellent night was had. The DJ's didn't let me down. Lost my wallet on the dance floor (I have holes in my pockets) and had it returned. Faith in human nature intact. DJ Rob Davis delivered, as usual. Greg and Dan were good fun, too. Saw Greg having a dance, too. Now that's "versatile".
Oh well, it's back to reality until the next time.
With the Future Music Festival playing the same day as the Mardi Gras party and finishing at 10pm. Take you pick of DJs NMG could book, John Digweed, Above and Beyond, Eric Morillo, Sven Vath. Oh, if only they could snap some of those DJs up, we would be in for one hell of a party!!!!!!!
Show us what you got NMG.
Daywash organisers were selling cheaper (first release) tickets to some of their friends at 'Rising' on the weekend. I dont believe the cheaper tickets were ever available to the general public!
Its a case of 'who you know!' But I guess thats their perogative, good luck to them as they throw a great party. Those that were at the first one will definately want to do it again.
We paid $50 bucks for tickets on Sat afternoon and thats still a bargain!
Daywash will be the number 1 party ticket for new year and I wouldn't be surprised if its already sold out now as I write this!
john digweed - his music doesnt appeal to the gay screamers, i doubt it
above & beyond - oh did i miss something, is trance back? thought its 2009...
sven vath - has he remixed beyonce? immagine all those confused queens on the dancefloor looking at each other asking, who is this, where is the wooden floor, where are the lasers and "hope he will play madonna" ?
if anyone it would be eric morillo but thinking, if guetta was picked by NMG - anything is possible.
why guetta? - he had one good track back in 2003. i guess thats why. after all people in sydney still havent gotten over that 2001-2004 trance era too.
As a straight guy whose been excusively with the gay party set for over 20 years, dancing with you groovey fuckers is the *BEST* fun to be had in my somewhat priveledges yet odd life.style
Nething beats those slow, deep & sexy beats (not those beats!). I wish I was gay, I'd be out there and full of pride. Add some MDxx in the mix and I'm in heaven.
My thanks go out to the gays that tolerate the odd straight male fag-hag. Now let's dance ...
"above & beyond - oh did i miss something, is trance back? thought its 2009..."
Yep it's 2009 and trance actaully never went away. I love how people have to make catty digs at music styles they don't personnaly like. Hopfully for the Hordern they'll have some music with energy regardless of the music style.
"why guetta? - he had one good track back in 2003."
I guess its because he's had a few number ones lately. Maybe thats too commercial for you but it seems to fit the RHI style of anthems.
Well said, I like it when people are thrown off their soapbox for trying to put other people down (the old tall poppy syndrome lives live and well). I think this chap thinks they have been there and seen it all!!!!! or they just like to wind others up. What ever their reasons, everyone is entitled to free speech, just make it more constructive instead de-constructive.
Hey add me in there too, this make two male fag-hags. I have been attending the gay parties for well over 10 years, where I have met and made loads of gay friends. I have been to every Mardi Gras party, Sleaze party, the old hand in hand parties and even the NYE parties since 1996. In all, probably about 30-40 parties and I am still overwhelmed at how professionally run they are and how tolerant the gay community is to have straight boys like myself attend (it is a privilege and honor to feel accepted). Being involved with the gay community and the memories I have from these experiences has made me, more open minded, tolerant, forgiving and most importantly, proud.
The straight parties have a looong way to go.
May the good times roll on.
As I was asked to comment, I will. I believe Jo Jo is running Frisky on NYD night at the Metro from a text received on the 17th. Expect more info from Jo via the FB profile and website.
MIKE KELLY is doing NYD daywash!!!!!
wonder how other promoters are going to beat this one
looks like rising promoters are the new leaders! who needs trance, who needs retro...bring some quality music.
New Mardi Gras (NMG) has confirmed that it has secured the glamorous Ivy Pool Club for the return of the Mardi Gras Pool Party.
The pool party, which was previously a highlight of the annual Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival, was last held in 2008 at Victoria Park Pool, Camperdown.
The revamped event will be held on Monday, March 1 next year – two days after the Mardi Gras Parade – on the rooftop of the Justin Hemmes-owned Ivy Bar on George Street, Sydney.
The party, which will run from 2pm until 10pm, will take in the Ivy Pool Club and Uccello Restaurant (upstairs) and the plush ChangeRoom and its dance floor (downstairs), and will be presented in association with the Rock Your Box production company.
re: "Depending which straight party.... Have to look at the pictures from http://www.petezimagez.com
Click on -> Dance party -> Q-Dance"
The lasers look spectacular. No doubt about that. I'm not sure what the crowd and music were like but, yeah, the party looks impressive and also looks like a trance crowd, maybe? I'm more into tribal/electro/jazz-funk house, myself.
I'm more attracted to going out when others don't (apart from the big parties) like Sunday nights when the rest of the city has finished partying and are safe and sound in their beds. Shift work allows for that.
But, I'll say it again - those laser light-scapes are bloody amazing. Excellent pics!
They advertised that Bang were the only outlets with first and second release tickets. we got ours from there. but i agree that final release at $50 is still very good value. they do a great job. i loved the last party -Pete
Agree with you....in fact it is now the case that all the drag queens have turned their backs on this terrible bitter character. She of course will say they are all jealous of her "glittery" fame and talent. Yeah right lol
It's a relief to see that she has drifted out of the spotlight (as you say), and apart from her DJing is now just performing one night a week, and back in the chorus.
These things have a way of correcting themselves and let's hope her crazy behaviour stops so the drag world can continue to grow without that awful stress....
I do know that one 'veteran' dancer who appeared on the original promotional poster for a show pulled out before it opened. I privately asked said Queen why, and the supposed reason was that he thought he was a bit too old or couldn't do the "fast moves".
Well hindsight tells me that was a cover up, and the real reason was closer to what you have intimated.
At least the glitter of Sydney says what she means openly on FB, unlike you anonymous dear ones do here. This has become so boring guys. Get over it and stop adding to the internal tearing apart of our community.
The main concern I have about the parade/party separation is what to do after the parade. Already Ox St is a mess on busy nights, and this could just be another opportunity for price gouging at venues, and separation of groups of friends. A range of of small outdoor, party spaces in the vicinity would be cool.
Just a heads up that the Bank Hotel are hosting a massive party after the Newtown Festival this Sunday 8th November.
Special guest international DJ is Damian Saint, who was offered the very first Ministry of Sound residency outside of the UK at the tender age of 21. I had the pleasure of working with Damian in Bali earlier this year & this guys rocks the dex like no one else. He is a master of his craft & this is his debut performance in Australia. Catch him in the Velvet Room at the Bank Hotel from 7pm - late.

Think you're asking a little early...although I'm desperatley hoping there will be one too. Any day trance party with an oversupply of lights and packed house at the big top will do me fine though! Dying to rock my socks off! and anything else
"Builders have been working around the clock installing new floorboards and beer taps to create the new look Aussie outback bar"
Hmmm aussie outback bar... quality.
I wonder if these renovations are going to be like the last overhyped renovations which funnily enough didn't look any different from what it was before.
It is significantly different and I like what I have seen so far. Perhaps rather than being negative come to the opening and check it out then you can base your comments on facts
Well said, lets hope it's a success to bring a bit of life back to that end of Oxford Street. Negative forum posters/bloggers/tweeters/whatever with no friends can stay at home.
I got a sneak preview of the Saddle Bar this afternoon (Upstairs - Midnight Shift) and was taken aback with the transformations so far... Can't wait for the official opening this coming Thursday... Saddle up and hop on up!
mmmm not my scene...i guess i will have to stick with the fag tag type of scene. or arq but that place is fallin apart. sorry its a negative post just had a big night and didnt even go to a gay bar!
well, the dj booth have been moved also the bar behing removed.
i thought the owner of midhing shift would go for more of the kooky, dirty etc cool crowd...his answer was "i never heard of them" i think that says how much he knows the scene.
so here we go, sydney leather pride is taking over this one. without being negative hope i am allowed to say it doesnt excite me one bit...
ps: wonder what is the wow factor going to be. a drag show doing madonna's dont tell me or j bear? wow
Manacle at the clarence in particular was not even close to a leather bar. With almost nightly performances by a tired old drag act, it certainly wasn't what a majority in the leather community wanted and it failed accordingly.
Funny though that the "reborn" ceasars is still featuring that tired drag act and the people are starting to stay away in droves. Seems she doesn't appeal to as many people as her ego thinks she does.
kooky ! lol
The owner of the Shift is the longest venue owner on Oxford st, says how much you know about the scene!! and he had had 2 off the best leather bars barracks and stronghold and opend the first real night club in sydney DCM. Lets just see what he does! and give some support to the scene we need this bar.
People are not staying away from the new Ceasars in droves.... where do you get off speaking such rubbish trying to damage a gay owned business? Facts please. Good crowds every night since it opened with people staying very late.
Any reports on Saturday F*cking Night at Nevermind? Was curious, but looking at the scene photos of the Friday nights there I didn't want to risk being old enough to be most of the crowd's grandfather.

What's on for NYE/NYD in Sydney? I'm a Sydney boy returning from Europe for a Xmas break and have no idea what's going on these days! Daywash has sold out so are there any other popular parties on? What happened to Frisky this year, is it on or not? Thanks for your help guys
I really hope Frisky is on. Does anyone think it seems a bit late for nothing to be announced yet? It would be good to know either way otherwise I need to look for something else!
Ring Bang Clothing ask them if there got Tickets for Friskys comeing up for sale they would know. Two posts ago on here someone said yep and hes named djs and Friskys said in there last email that there was going to be one.
Mike Kelly is a resident of the (dutch) Furball (brand) as well as Dj Bramsterdam & Dj Big general. i believe all three of them will be part of the Furball Down Under. there is no dj rado mentioned on the web site.
on the other hand he is playing other bear/hairy men party in amsterdam which is called bear necessity... http://www.bear-necessity.eu/
OMG you are SOOOOOO 1985. dont you have iFone? i used an app called zhashaam and the name of this track is 1.28$ bill by whitney houston , freemasons trance mix.
youre so not cool daahl.
"I can't imagine any of this happening in a gay club.
Too much respect for the DJ, in my experience. But maybe that stuff does happen. Haha - all I can muster up usually is "f@#ing great track", if that!"
If only all punters were as respectful as yourself! Sad to say but every one of those scenarios has happened to me multiple times while working as a DJ over the years.
The funniest was when I was playing a trance event and some westie demanded I play Jimmy Barnes! He got quite agressive when I laughed at him and had to be escorted out of the venue.
Fair enough you would not demand a song at an event such as Toybox or Frisky etc...but at bars I don't see what the big deal is. Some dj's are just really up themselves. I have noticed this seems to be the standard in Sydney, Melb and Brisbane. If the venue or dj does not want requests, then it is easy to separate yourself from your patrons with glass or elevation...so just do that!

Thank you, sir, Respectful, I am. Saves me a lot of hassle, too!

Talk about a fish out of water! Thank you bringing me back to reality.
BTW, the Tiesto track below was found in a rubbish bin, but I like it. Sunday morning material.

We want Whitney Houston to perform at MArdi GRas 2010
normally I'd be the first to say this is hogwash. We hear these ruours of a big name every year. However in this case, with the amount of drugs flying around sydney that weekend, it's just possible!

At first I didnt support gay marriage because 'marriage' is something that happens in a church but I guess it is more about equality and for the tiny number who would actually want to get 'married' in a church. More gays need to think the same cos I know many that couldn't really give a crap about gay 'marriage'.

I'm looking for a trance track that I have heard out a few times, it's Robbie Williams - Feel. I have looked around the net but I can't seem to find it or who remixed it. (it's not the Dirty Harry Club Mix)
Well it's almost the end of Nov and surprise surprise, no word on an opening date.
Mr Imperial, you can no longer blame anyone except yourself for the delays with opening those doors.....
