Pinkboard: Party Graffiti Wall 48

Super Fag Tag. Copyright (c) Petez Imagez 2006 Hey Mr. DJ
Put a record on
I wanna dance with my baby
And when the music starts
I never wanna stop
It’s gonna drive me crazy

Music...music...music...music...music....music...

Music makes the people come together
(Never gonna stop)
Music makes the bourgeoisie and the rebel
(Never gonna stop)

Don’t think of yesterday
And I don’t look at the clock
I like to boogie-woogie
It’s like riding on the wind and it never goes away
Touches everything I’m in
Got to have it everyday

Music makes the people come together
(Never gonna stop)
Music makes the bourgeoisie and the rebel
(Never gonna stop)

Thank you for spoiling the "flow" of this board and not contributing to the new function that panther has placed on the board. Surely it wouldn't have taken much effort.

I wonder if its possible for Panther to make the "song playing now" function boxes a compulsory entry. ie, If you dont fill in the box with your song playing now your post doesnt get published. Just a thought ??

Clubbers of Australia, the polls are open and it’s time to have your say. Yes, the 2006 Technics inthemix50 DJ Poll is on and this year it’s bigger and better than ever before!

With two new categories including the Most Popular Club Night and Most Popular Event by state, you now get to give a little pat on the back to the people who work tirelessly to put the dance floor under your feet and a place to meet.

But, let’s remember the mainstay of the Technics inthemix50 poll, it’s also about the DJs. Make sure you support the DJs that have given you so many great memories by voting for them. There were lots of surprises in last year’s results and we expect nothing less this time around.

Tell us who’s your favourite DJ + Club Night + Event and you will go in the draw to a pair of Technics SLZ-1200 Digital Turntables with Mixer and Headphones valued at over $5000.

This is your chance to have your say and support our awesome local industry, so vote now at www.inthemix.com.au/50

I had the privilege of being asked along to the Dykes on Bikes Black and White ball.
Boys, it's a pity more of you didn't/don't get the opportunity to be invited, and go, to DoB events coz the boys could really learn a lot about community.
It was themed (as named) and without exaggeration almost every person there was dressed in theme. The music was good (great at times)and the crowd was no attitude gettin down and having fun. Just what dance parties are all about.
Congratulations to Janet and the crew from Dykes on Bikes who put the even on. You have a lot to teach the boy community.

And I was very annoyed that one young guy I spoke to had NO IDEA it was a gay club. He was convinced it's 200% straight.

Well, the news is out, the rumours and attacks over DJ selection are long gone maybe (given how quickly the debate left this forum).

All DJs are ours and many with much applauded and admired international credentials. Those without international credentials (not that relevant for Sleaze anyway) are tried, tested, proven, and much loved locals.

Yes, the process has raised some concern, partially justified just because the process was not seen as being open and transparent, even if only based on a commercial success to raise the required funds to pay for OUR Mardi Gras Parade (primarily). That basis, I should add, I'm way supportive of in these tough times.

Very much looking forward to this collaboration of music and visuals that we are so great at presenting.

DJ POLL FOR MARDI GRAS PARTY
Just been looking at the DJ Poll on NMG website.
As there will be local dj's playing in the various halls what is wrong with trying a bit of variety and importing 1 or 2 DJ's from OS for a change instead of same same. Seems every other major party overseas do the same thing.

I suggest they (NMG) drop the "local dj rules" from the poll and just leave the OS ones to be voted for. May end up getting more punters from OS to the party too.

Come on be game and try something new......

NMG Newsletter on Sleaze
25 and still looking fresh

Yes indeed. Sleaze Ball number 25. Doesn't time fly! Who would have thought our livers would still be in one piece?

A little bit of history. The first Sleaze Ball was held in September 1982 in the grand ballroom at Paddington Town Hall. It was an overwhelming success and 500 party goers had to be turned away. The following year it headed to the Showgrounds for the first time, numbers rocketed and Sydney had it's other great gay party.

While Mardi Gras Party is all wonder, celebration and light, the Sleaze Ball is darker and edgier. There's room for everything from high camp to S&M, but only so long as it's sleazy. Sleaze Ball is also the great dress-up night of the year, an opportunity to flex your creative muscles (and any other muscles you have at your disposal).

Well Sleaze is staying dark and edgy, but as it's our 25th - our silver - we thought we'd throw in a bit of bling...

Don't be fooled by the rocks that I got...

It's with great pleasure that we can officially announce to you, our members, that Sleaze Ball 2006 is open for business.

The Ball is back! We want to make this the most dressed-up night in the Sydney calendar. To help you along we've chosen a theme which we think gives you plenty of scope for sexy costumes.

So welcome to Ghetto Fabulous!

Our creative team is currently combing the urban ghettos of the world's great cities for everything that is hip and happening. They're looking for things that are so wrong they might just be right. Their goal? To give you a party that teeters on the edge between glamour and gutter. You could be the toast of the V.I.P Lounge one minute and in a dumpster the next.

It's all about being hip and cool, yet shamelessly trashy. You can't look too glitzy. You can't look too filthy. It's Sleaze Ball after all.

We've got what we think is the best DJ line-up in years. Stephen Allkins (Love Tattoo), Mr Timothy, Paul Goodyear, Sveta, Alex Taylor, Mandy Rollins, Sista P, Rob Davis, Jake Kilby, Feisty, Rob Gilbert, David Hiscock, Chip & Rado.

Sleaze Ball
I'm very excited to hear that City Live is being used for Sleaze and will again host a retro theme for the night.

My sources tell me that up until a week ago Sleaze was only going to be in the Hordern & Dome. The announcement by Toybox that they will not be having a party on the day after was instrumental in NMG electing to add another hall for the night and the DJ's in that space only being asked last week.

My sources also tell me that David Hiscock is back after his successful effort at Mardi Gras and will again be playing the middle set in the retro space and Jake Kilby will be closing the space, not too sure who is opening.

It will be very interesting having a Sleaze ball with no RHI but to be frank it's a very sensible business decision and with no RHI its going to be a very sought after party to attend in my opinion. I'm gonna get my ticket next week ;)

Looking forward to Sleaze heaps.

Unfortunately, this hasn't translated into NMG including even one trance DJ in the DJ line-up - I'm guessing this is why people like Ryan Murphy weren't invited to play. I'll be interested to see how this affects ticket sales....

Well Trance Boy , NMG have added City Live as the extra venue. It's been said over and over again that City Live doesnt work for most styles of music and its been a proven winner for retro music. Would you have been happy if City Live was added as a trance venue ? I'd say probably not.

Well done NMG for recognising that there are other needs other than trance and house.

The addition of the retro space for sleaze will attract a lot more punters than I think anyone realizes

Funny discussion about Trance in The Forum (formerly Stage 11 and City Live).

I remember distinctly Ryan Murphy rocking The Forum in the last shift of Inquisition - hands in the air and loving it.

Trance works if the room is designed to handle it, the DJ is good enough, and the people are up for it.

The Forum works well for many styles of music - let's not 'pidgeon hole' any venue for any style. We have so few venues we can use for parties in this city and our options should always be well and truly open.

Just my opinion. Have a good rest of weekend everyone.

now worried what they are going to do with the Hordern ?

Someone asked Brad W the question and no reply so far ?

Have loved the Horderns style and its been pretty well the only venue I dance in for MG and Sleaze and its always packed ? so dont understand "if" they suddenly change that around.

And while Retro boy and others may slag trance it is this
style which is the more popular and I'm talking all forms of trance whether commercial/hard etc . You only have to look at CD sales/ top DJ lists/ overseas parties etc.

I hope I'm searching in the right place here.
I was an engineer on the 1998 NYE Dance Event at Technology Park, Refern (Danny Teneglia headlining) and the Lighting Programmer for NYE 2000 ("NY2K")at Olympic Park, Sydney.
Does anyone know where I can find any photos of these two events??

I would be eternally greatfull.

Dont you realize that the DJ's have already been picked by NMG for Sleaze and that people like Alex Taylor and Paul Goodyear have already been placed in the Hordern. Sorry guys, but the Hordern this Sleaze is the commercial hall and thats that. No amount of pleading is going to change this now. Unless NMG unexpectedly can add in the RHI at the last minute then the Hordern is going to be commercial music and you tribal/hard/dark music lovers are just going to have to settle for the Dome. Sorry.

Whilst I agree with you Aiden, I do think it was reasonable to expect that the major hall at a party called SLEAZE would have a dirty/harder sound to it.

Maybe it's time to rename this party as it's having less and less to do with actual sleaze each time.

I'm not saying it's going to be a bad party, in fact it will probably be quite good. Good yes, sleazy? most likey not.

Also interesting is the change in attitude of my friends. Last year Sleaze was a must go, unmissable. This year we're still undecided. Only 1 out of my usual group of 15 has said we should definately go.

are you and your friends some kind of indicator if the party is going to be good or bad?

wherever you go its all about what YOU make it to be for yourself. not what your friends make it for you.
also, if one of your 15 friends said "we should go this year" that indicates to me that theres something wrong with your little group of 15. i think you should get rid off such a group destroying person. its dangerous wanting to have fun, an opinion and be flexible.

Hordern: Mr Timothy, Alex, Chip, Paul goodyear although he could also be in the Dome?, Rob Davis and Sista P, although they could also be in the Dome. lots of the djs they have sleceted play dark and dirty and lots play tribal.

Fox studio parties havent been "sleazy" for years and thats not NMG's fault , its the fault of the people that run Fox.

Time to get over the whole concept that Sleaze Ball is Sleazy and recognise the fact that the main hall at a dance party has to play the type of music that is preferred by the majority of party goers , and that is (and has always been) commercial music.

I certainly can remember last years party and everyone was rockin with the style of music that was played in the main hall. And guess what it wasnt commercial.

Re: It will be the Shift for me if I have to wait for - Wed 2 Aug 2006 21:18:53
Well, those who want to kick on immediately after Toy Box normally seem to head straight to the Shift, because it keeps the pace and music going right from 8pm onwards - a good move actually.

ARQ made a mistake a few Tob Boxes back where it refused to follow the same pattern, and insisted on taking everybody back to its normal funky house opening set, progressing onto trance and uplifting styles later in the night. It was a mistake because Toy Box patrons would walk in, see it wasn't happening, and turn around and go straight back to the Shift.

Starting at 11 makes sense. And with DJ Josh and Luke Leal on the bill, I know where I'll be heading!

Plus, it gives you a chance to head home, have a short break, and freshen up before kicking on. That approach always seems to work well for our happy little group.

So, DJ Josh and Luke Leal in the Arena at ARQ? Perfect way to finish off a fantastic day of great music - for me anyway :)

Haven't been out clubbing for A-G-E-S! So really counting down to this one.

HA HA - yeah that pathetic version is what I always remember whenever i hear her name.

Remember when, years ago, she was a judge on Talent Quest, or New Faces or whatever it was called, and all the contestants used to suck up to her and say "oh i liked your version of Wing Beneath My Wings better". HA HA. that was such a crack up because the obviously didn't mean it and Colleen just kept on feeling bitter that her version didn't have anywhere near the success that Better Midler's version did.

Chris Cox plays the Shift's 25th Birthday
So, I've just learned that Chris Cox (formerly one half of Thunderpuss with Barry Harris) will be playing a six hour set at the Shift's 25 birthday party on Saturday 19 August.

Am I the only one who is excited at the prospect of hearing a DJ who produced some of the most memorable (well, for me anyway) remixes of the late 1990s and early 2000s as part of Thunderpuss?

Yes, they were so handbag. Yes, there were incredibly camp. Yes, they certainly didn't push any musical boundaries but I can't help but smile and lose myself in reminiscence whenever I hear one of these tracks.

Anyone have any idea what his muscial style is like now?

The Metro, Bless Her
As this romantic Gemini/Cancer finishes watching Studio 54 on cable tonight, he realizes that, like back then in the early 80s, the last dance is heard in venues and situations. The need to move on encompasses all. We either develop or we stagnate.

Way back in 1998 Jo Jo showed us the Metro as a special place we could escape and live in another world, albeit for only 8-9 hours 6 or 7 times a year.

Several other ‘gay’ parties and courageous promoters came along, notably Free, to give us other uses, more often, for this new favoured venue of the gay community.

Then came a new Lord Mayor, determined to clean up George Street, so that development and progress would move forward. Targeted were the 24 Hour licensed premises on the ‘strip’, not, unfortunately, the pinball parlors that actually attracted the ‘scum’ and trouble of the late night in the heart of our beautiful city. (And still do)

The new closing still, sort of, suited the wonderful venue’s regular, and much respected support, for the live band community but, alas, our perchance for ‘dancing till dawn’, and beyond, suffered.

After what felt like an eternity, two young men who had been long supporters of the Frisky experience decided to work within the ‘rules’ and hence the serious Sydney Day Party was developed. This followed many years of “recoveries” starting in the gutter, the Shift etc – feeling nostalgic right now?

We should reflect here for a second – the necessity came due to not allowing the ‘entertainment sector’ of Sydney to actually entertain – I digress...

Anyway, the rest, as they say, is history – Sunday, at the Metro, will be the 12th Toybox and the 10th at the Metro. I lost count of my Frisky parties (I just called Jo to find out and he asked if he could call me back with exact numbers as he was DJing at Arq that moment – good one Damon – he he). The date, this Sunday, coincidentally, is also what would have been the 10th anniversary of Frisky from it’s early days at Orb (starting in August 1996) before the move to the Metro in early 1998.

As many know, the Metro is in trouble financially and has been widely reported to be under Voluntary Administration. The managers of the interim period are from the Enmore (thank God), another venue that has a strong history for supporting live music and alternative entertainment in Sydney.

So, this Sunday, I, as a veteran, with the utmost pleasure, will do my God only knows how many numbered party at this icon of Sydney.

And, it may be my, our, last. If it is, let’s give Toybox the best send off we can and, more importantly, when, sometime during the day, you look up and think “Do you remember where you lost it?”, let's remember the history and the special people that made our journey so damn good.

Bump-in for, maybe, the last Gay gig at the Metro, starts early tomorrow so must away. Thanks guys for the enormous personal pride in assisting some bloody brilliant dreamers to make our dreams come true.

Love ya,

PS Thanks Stephen.. Donna came on, couldn't resist.

I disagree, the Metro underwent a huge overhaul when the new owners took over a few months ago .... paint job etc. The chandalier was removed from the tilted frame and placed (in all its glory) above the stairs (personally I think the whimsy of it hanging awkwardly in the frame was more in place) ..... pity the staff were all put off and new staff will be there tomorrow ..... the metro security staff were the best I've ever worked with, the bar staff were on the ball and generally the place worked well.
Oh well, Vale the Metro. Hopefully you'll live for us to play in, in the future.
