30th Anniversary Mardi Gras
It's here! Tonight we celebrate the opening of the of the Mardi Gras festival. Yay!
While I was not around for that first march in 1978, I have been around Mardi Gras for most of these last 30 years. This is a very important part of my year and my life. I celebrate the achievements of these last 30 years and drink to those who have put in the hard yards. Not just those who dedicate their time to The Parade or The Party, but also the political campaigners and lobbyists, the carers looking after our community members, the counsellors who listen to our worries and fears, the writers and educators teaching about acceptance, and everyone who has had the courage to come out. It is a long list to celebrate, but celebrate we will.
But we haven't got it all yet! We are waiting on the new federal government to reform 58 laws that discriminate against same sex couples. We are fighting in the ACT for the right to have a ceremony when we declare our relationship. We are battling homophobia and homophobic attacks on our home ground of Oxford Street.
Over the years I have marched, danced, skated and ridden in the parade with many different groups. These include New Tradition Dancers, Gay Skate, Pink Link, Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service, the award winning Spoofters, Black White and Pink, Boys on Bikes and even New Mardi Gras. Building a float or costume and taking it in front of those enormous crowds cheering is an amazing experience that indicates some small modicum of acceptance.
The festival is our opportunity to see events about us. Plays where we are portrayed as normal people doing normal things: like falling in and out of love, coping with family, work, dreams. Innovative theatre. Performances by the greats from around the world and from home. Exhibitions, some of them a bit rude. Sporting events to watch and participate in. And more! Too much to fit in these few short weeks.
Fair Day is one of those wonderful days when the whole community gets together. We pop over to this park and plop down our picnic blankets. From humble beginnings in Green Park we have outgrown Jubilee Park in Glebe and now fill Victoria Park.
Then after we have done all this we have a little party with 20,000 of our closest friends. This is The Party, not the after party as some seem to be calling it. The after parties come after The Parade and The Party. This is where we hug long lost friends and sweaty strangers and wish them a Happy Mardi Gras!

Launch
Hi everyone,
Due to the uncertain weather conditions we are moving the Launch of this year's Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival to the Supper Club (Will and Toby's) on the 1st floor of the Oxford Hotel in Taylor Square starting at 5pm!

Come on down (but get there early to make sure you get your spot) and help kick off our 30th anniversary celebrations!

And for those of you who were looking forward to the tree planting. Never fear! Mardi Gras always has a plan B!

Re:
Oh please !

Yes Mardi Gras used to get 27,000 going. Why ?

because back then it was THE only major dance party. A lot of people seem to forget the very important factor.
People moan about the good old days when there was a party on at the Hordern almost every weekend. I have been doing them since mid 80's. You basically only had one type of music to dance to like you heard on the radio and Top 40 etc.

By end of the 80's other types of music diverged from all this like Trance born from House etc and so instead of there being 1 party on in all of Sydney you started to get a couple to choose from. This was in the straight and gay scene. By 90's you could easily have a dozen or more parties on each weekend which we still do. You just have to pick up mags like 3D plus the gay rags to see parties being advertised all with different styles and different sizes. The straight scene also started to do their own parties at Hordern then later at Homebush not to mention worldwide parties like Ministry of Sound and others visiting Sydney.

So the main reason Mardi Gras does not attract those huge numbers is not because NMG has not got their act right its because it all diversified nearly 20 years ago. Back then posters really moaned about the amount of straights and thats because we put on an awesome party ( and still do). But they now have their own to attend.

Raves are still going strong although smaller.

Oh and you will be surprised with your guess at 10,000 to the point you will be embarrassed you posted that.

Can you name one Government/TV series/Organisation etc
that has not had its Peaks and Troughs ? NMG was around the time MG collapsed but NMG each year has been getting better and better and the last few years my friends and I and other posters have commented how the parties are like those of old and this 30th is going to have the atmosphere of the ones that got 25,000 ! and you can quote me on that :)

So not its not dying a slow death.

Maybe it is time for you to call it a day though or at least calling it a day for your predictions.

This Party is going to prove you soooooooooooo WRONG.

MG tickets
Bought my ticket last Tuesday numbered 9507.

16,000 is a complete frabrication, but considering there are no discounts at all (just $150/$120) and there are 3 weeks to go, expect a near record crowd and a sell-out.

There is a real buzz spreading about this party. Like the Olympics, it will be a one-of-a-kind experience.

using your ticket number as a guide to how many tickets have ben sold is the fabricaton.
there are ticket outlets all over australia who have had blocks of physical tickets allocated to them for a long time now. they have had number pre-allocated to them. there is no way you can tell by your number how many have been sold.
they sold 16000 two weeks ago. it will before the next three weeks is out.

30th anniversary on ninemsn
"Sydney Mardi Gras celebrates 30 years
Saturday Feb 9 21:40 AEDT
It was hugs and kisses, six foot drag queens and backslapping all around to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras and the launch of this year's festival.

Rain on Saturday afternoon forced the event indoors but it did not deter more than 100 happy supporters who attended the celebration at Darlinghurst - the inner-city birthplace of the once controversial parade. ....

Olivia Newton-John will be among the performers at the party following the parade on March 1.

For tickets to the party and information about all of the Mardi Gras events, people can visit www.mardigras.org.au"

Gosh cheer up people - the 30th Anniversary Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Festival has started! Get out there and enjoy and while you are just think about this...

Mardi Gras started as a protest at a time when homosexuality was illegal and gays and lesbians did not have equal rights. While many laws have changed there are still 58 federal laws that discriminate against us.

The celebration that is Mardi Gras is put together by thousands of volunteers who give up their time throughout the year to ensure the events are the best possible. Sure there are ticket sales and sponsorship dollars but all things going well these just cover the running costs. The engine room of the events are the volunteers who control and execute everything including the budgets, marketing, logistics, scenery, entertainment and on it goes. Fu*k even ONG is only doing it for a donation to her charity.

Mardi Gras would not occur if these volunteers did not have the passion to give up a day, a week, often time equaling months of their year to make it happen. This passion started from a protest march and has continued for 30 years...

So cheer up and enjoy a celebration built from love. All the volunteers ask of you is one thing... just bring your smiling face!

:)

IMHO, I'm not sure the parade should have the HOGs and purely commercial floats like the TripleM float of last year. I think it should be all community and protest groups. Of course they could have sponsership, but the main message of the floats should not be about buying some product.

The Dykes on Bikes should definately continue leading the parade, since they start up the excitment of the crowd and also it's safer to have them up front than stuck between other floats.
- FiremanSam - Replies: 1, add

Re:
don't let the folks make you feel bad.. your discussion was valid and you asked a simple question.

it is certainly very possible a group would walk in the parade and use the space to create a negative view of gays (for about 100m until everyone boo's them off the street).

nonetheless i think the other posters have pointed that perhaps these dominating men are on our side, and in the light of all the tension lately, it is nice to know we have some friends in Illawarra. perhaps some of these bikers are also gay? we'll see

Short Story Comp
Last night was the Mardi Gras Short Story Competition. Even though the attendance was smaller than last year, it was a great night. "Sweet Treats at the CWA" was great fun and deserving of the prize. The youth prize winner "The Parking Lot" was poignant. The rest of the stories read out were also great. You can read them all on http://www.gay-ebooks.com.au/

I'm planning on dancing at least part of the evening, not lying back watching sultry boys. Looking forward to it.

And the winners are… Stryker and DJ Toi!!
We LOVE providing up and coming DJ’s with a platform to boost their skills, experience and profile and there’s no profile quite like the Mardi Gras Party.

The winners of the DJ Spin Off are Stryker and DJ Toi. Stryker is a loud and proud gay boy, Sydney born and bred. He's been seriously DJ'ing since 2000 and has done everything from friends' birthday parties to fill-in spots at the Midnight Shift, as well as holding his own Kamp Kristmas parties twice a year. Stryker will play his own brand of funky vocal house with a focus on cool basslines, with a brief detour into darker waters in his winning set in the Forecourt.

DJ Toi started out in bands playing everything from classical to heavy metal and settled into DJ'ing regularly in 2005. She's played at Sydney venues including Yu, Candy's Apartment and Middle Bar so far. Get ready for a smooth mixture of tech house, hip hop and sexy electro when DJ Toi hits the decks at Party.

Jeremy Brennan & King Casual Live At Will & Tobys Supper Club

Jeremy Brennan and his dirty pop collective King Casual are playing a one night only Mardi Gras Festival showcase at Will & Toby's Supper Club on Tuesday 26th Feb, fusing pop, ska, blues, and UK Soul blend to create a modern sound not dissimilar to the vein of Young Disciples, Driz-a-bone, Madness, Incognito, BNH and the Soul Family Sensation.

Fronted by keys player Jeremy Brennan, the band's freight train grooves and laid back styles have earned them a reputation for tight, punchy live sets powered by Brennan's remarkable voice - even prompting one reviewer to cry "Dayum, this man can sing!"

Regulars on the Sydney party scene, King Casual gig highlights include private parties for myspace and QANTAS, as well as playing last year's Mardi Gras Dance Party and appearances up and down the east coast of Australia. Most recently Jeremy and his band have been supporting rising star Courtney Act for her series of DIVA Award winning shows.

They also recently celebrated the launch of their debut album Actionality. One of the tracks "I'll Never Weather" is featured on an American compilation CD Artists against Cancer which has just been released through iTunes.

And if you haven't heard enough of Jeremy Brennan, keep an ear out for the new Snooze 'Mad World' TV commercial's - you'll hear him in one of his quieter moments singing the theme

*** IT'S RAINING MEN ***
~
Let’s get soaking wet with four seasons in one day!

The annual Mardi Gras Pool Party is tomorrow, Saturday 16 February, from 7:00pm.

The Pool Party will continue with rain, hail or shine, which makes it THE best outdoor event? With 1600 boys and girls in itsy bitsy teeny weeny swimwear, you can be sure it will leave you hot, wet and up for more.

Entertainment on the night takes a twist with a special “Slippery When Wet” Fashion swimwear parade produced by the amazing Lenya Jones using fashion provided by Aussie Boys, SOS and Beach Shack. MC’d by the delightful Tora Hymen think hot guys and girls doing a choreographed number to sexy tunes in some equally sexy swimwear, and just when you think it can’t possible get any hotter, we have the Gaydar Boys at their Gaydar stall with the inimitable Portia Turbo trying to get them to (mis)behave. To get your toes tapping and your Speedo’s shaking, we have Luke Leal (Arq) and Sista P (Bitch) guiding us from sunset into the midnight hour.

There are hot showers available, food and a toddlers’ pool with fountain water feature and surrounded by a wet-deck covering, so let’s get wet under the cover.

Cloak check will be onsite so people can continue their partying, so grab your towels and head down to Victoria Park Pool for a night of literally good clean and chewing gum free fun.

More details on the Pool facilities are: http://www.cityofsydney.nsw.gov.au/Residents/SwimmingPools/VictoriaParkPool.asp

Tickets are still available through www.ticketek.com.au or 132 849

Tickets: $40/$35 (members)

Please note this event is alcohol, glass and gum free.

BushDance cancelled
The Southern Cross Outdoors Group has been forced to cancel the 2008 Mardi Gras BushDance.

The original venue of Marrickville Town Hall became unavailable after the Marrickville library was damaged by a flood. The contents of the library have been moved upstairs into the Town Hall while water damage is repaired and new carpets laid.

A suitable replacement venue could not be found.

Needless to say we are very distressed about this for many reasons, especially at this point when you have put work into organising your group.

All we can say is how sorry we are for the inconvenience.

We have a firm booking for the Winter BushDance to be held at Marrickville Town Hall on July 25 and truly hope that you will be able to be there.

Donno about diverse crowd but certainly a very straight one. Why is MG marketing the Harbour Party in the straight press? Are they so desperate to sell tickets they're selling out the integrity of the event.

Pinkboard is unable to verify this statement.

Fair Day
Fair Day is strictly licensed only. No BYO will be permitted. Do not try to bring your own alcoholic drinks.

Also they will be asking for a $5 donation from everyone. Last year apparently they averaged 10c donation per person. They appear to have erected barriers around the park. Presumably to help enforce both of these.

I support both of these moves. It costs a lot of money to put Fair Day on. They need to recoup some of these costs from the participants. $5 isn't much. Last year the bar prices were reasonable.

I know people are probably going to bitch at me for this, but seriously guys NOTHING is for free and it costs stacks of money to hold Mardi Gras. If everybody donated $5 it would go a very long way.

$5 is the same price for a beer, so have 1 less drinks if thats what it means and support a worthy cause that we all want to continue.

Happy fairday people!!!

Just back from Fair Day. Huge crowd this year, it seemed! Didn't mind handing over the $5 - all good. "cant believe that Annabelle and Bill wanted out of mardi gras party, all the DJ's I know who didn't get selected are gutted/upset that they didnt get picked."

I'd say the two that pulled out were probably promised something and then NMG failed to deliver. Happens all the time. You'd be very surprised how many DJ's over the years have been selected by Mardi Gras only to decline based on numerous issues. Pay rates, Equipment brands/models to be used, time slots allocated to a DJ, and the other DJ's you would have to work with in the same space on the night are four of the more common issues over the years that have resulted in DJ's deciding it wasnt worth the effort to agree to play.
