Pinkboard: Mardi Gras Party 2005 Graffiti Wall 2

DJs have been announced. Rumours of shows are starting to spread. The season is about to launch. Ticket prices are go up soon (11th Feb).

All this is saying Mardi Gras is fast approaching. All this is saying excitement is mounting. All this is saying is better start sewing or shopping for something to wear.

So have you slept with someone who knows the hairdresser of the bodyguard of someone famous who is definitely performing a duet with Cher at the party? If so, then let us all know here as soon as you can. (Pinkboard can neither confirm nor deny any rumours that appear on these pages until 6th March.)

Otherwise see you under the mirror ball on Saturday 5th March.

This wall is for the Party. Please discuss the Mardi Gras Festival (including Launch, Fair Day and Parade) on the Festival Wall.

Oh poop. Missed being first due to watching SVU.

I think I like the variety of DJ's on offer for the party, and will have much fun on our wanderings. But I reckon I'll be hanging out in Stage 11 mostly for Sveta and Feisty, with some stickybeaking in on Mr 4Strings and his mega-set and for Hordern lights and atmosphere. Mr Blomfield will be a tired boy, though. I haven't partied before in the Fox and Cocks or Hounds and Lion or whatever it's called.

Shall we post track requests on the off chance that sets have not yet been finalised? In which case, I like that one "You bring light in", because it always makes me feel happy.

Oxford Street Mardi Gras 2005 CD.

I was recently working on compiling the first mixed CD for Stonewall in association with Central Station. It was due out in time for Mardi Gras. However half way through the process it got stalled and postponed. Why? Well I guess it was so that Central could release their own Mardi Gras themed CD without any competition.

Compilation politics! Who da thunk it? :-)
www.lukeleal.com Confirmed -

That track is originally by Underworld (Two months off?) and I remember it being played by Neal Crawford at Inquisition at Stage 11 last year. Love it also and I really hope someone plays it at Mardi Gras.
-

18 tracks on CD1 - Sounds like mixed radio edits to me. HATE the mixed CD. Give me full length full strength so I can mix me own!

(Oh, and there are a suspiciously large number of Tinted/Bang On/Central tracks on there!)
Trance Trance Trance Confirmed -

I've also Heard that rumour about Dannii cancelling MG party this year- apparently another 2 acts pulled out as well so from what I hear theyre just going to go with Drag numbers etc. - time will tell thoughif there's any truth to it.
-

Inaya Day has two songs on that CD. Hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Will she be there on the night?
-

Kylie Rose - you should be able to answer this question. Does Neroli play anything like you did last year. I'm hoping the answer to this question is a yes.
- Tue 1 Feb 2005 14:05:53

In answer to this question - some people have commented that they never know what to expect from the sets I play. This is because I usually take a different approach to each event, and like to try something new each time to keep the audience interested. At the moment, I am really attracted to the electro/industrial tribal sound - and this seems to be sticking.

As you will find in any large city, there are different scenes in Brisbane. Neroli is a Wickham/Fluffy DJ - whereas I am in the process of creating my own night with different music and a different audience to what the commercial venues offer. This should give you some idea of how to compare us as DJs - but I'd be really interested to know what you actually think!
Kylie Rose -

Does anyone know if the CD is supposed to be "official"? With the description of the party etc it certainly sounds like it, although you would hope someone from NMG knows the difference between "inaugural" and "innaugrial"

The artwork on the Sanity site has the NMG logo with the "New" replaced by "2005", but says it's not the actual art work.

Bit strange...

compilation politics! Who da thunk it? :-)
www.lukeleal.com - Wed 2 Feb 2005 09:46:54

Well anyone would realize it makes financial and communnity sense for Central Station to focus their energies on a Mardi Gras CD. I remember once that Mr Leal was the poster boy for Mardi Gras when his cd came out. Step aside Luke and let Mardi Gras shine! By releasing a CD at festival time Stonewall are just cashing in on the season, Mardi Gras IS the season. Buck up kid! Your cd will see the light of day oneday- unless its been canned completely because of your latest post, which, in the opinon of this poster, appears to be sour grapes. Compilation politics, no. Pragmatic business yes.
Congrats Mardi Gras for getting together in time. So is it mixed by any one local? Or is it another Paul Goodyear studio edit? Good to see Mardi Gras opening up the local contributors (5 or 6 - a new record!) and actually having at least one gay artist on a Gay & Lesbian cd. Congrats!
Fingers crossed that Dannii can't make it - its all about Kylie anyway! Heres hoping Luke gets some action. It aint been a great start to 2005 for him poor lad.

- Wed 2 Feb 2005 14:27:31

Oh, FFS! Honestly, does it really matter? This discussion has been brought up so many times! Paul might not be gay, but he is a gay institution. He's regularly refuses to play at straight venues and straight events because he simply prefers the gay ones. He's provided a massive influence in our community and our music styles. That's a lot more than what some of our gay and lesbian DJs can claim.
-

Are you sure Central Station isn't doing exactly that?

Why is it called "Oxford Street Mardi Gras"?

personally, straight or gay shouldn't come into play..

i think Paul is so good he deserves to be called...

PAUL GODYEAH!!!
-

"By releasing a CD at festival time Stonewall are just cashing in on the season, Mardi Gras IS the season."

Thanks for the highly facetious post 'queenie' but your fingers have leapt to the keyboard a little to quickly. The CD in question has nothing to do with Mardi Gras the organisation and is not official. Gone are the days when Mr Cobden would come crashing down like gods thunder on anyone daring to cash in on the Mardi Gras name! Now anyone can (and does) take advantage of the blood, sweat & sequins we've all poured into the name. (A Melbourne Joy FM cd this time last year did the same thing) The Stonewall disc had a planned release date round MG time, it wasn't abducting the Mardi Gras name.

I have no probs with MG - a quick glance at my home page and you'll see a promotional graphic for the festival, which is linked to their web page. I'm PROUD of my association with Mardi Gras, I'm not going to let one disagreement ruin that. I was more amused by the CD situation than pissed off (hence the smiley face). So my grapes are sweet and plump thank yew very much! :-)
www.lukeleal.com Confirmed -

Some may recall Neroli played MG a few years ago. She is a regular at Tropical Fruits parties playing a variety of styles. For the 2003NYE Party - Neroli, Sveta and Kellie Lynch played in the second room which was much harder than the main room - alot of the boys loved it!

Neroli also recently played in Adelaide for Feast Festival's Taboo Party with Matt Steer and was very well received.

As for Les Smith, what can I say, he is also a regular and mainstay of TF parties, knows how to read the crowd and keeps the floor packed and pumping all night

congrats to all the DJ's selected for MG05

cheers!
-

though I don't care who brings out a CD at Mardi Gras, it is really a case of ambush marketing!

Was last years CD produced by Melbourne's JOY Radio any different?

As NMG were't not in a position to produce a CD Compilation previously, others have stepped in and filled the void

cheers!
-

Lets hope Central Station donate a portion of the profits of the CD to Mardi Gras. Pretty scammy otherwise. Sorry to hear you missed out on the opportunity to release a disc Luke. I reckon you would have come up with a better track listing.
bearney -

Hi Luke,

I am on your side anyway ..... Why is Central putting out a CD anyway? Are they going to donate any profits to NMG? I like the CD's that have been done in the past but they have had decent level of community input ( ie GAY DJ's)

Last time i checked Central are not to gay friendly..... One stop is a different story but thats a whole different conversation for another board.

Show = Mr Timothy, Yay!

Oh, and I also think Central Station are quite gay-friendly. Always have been to me and, for one thing, they have CD singles galore and even a wee bit of eye candy behind the counter. I actually find all the hard house on the monitors and the 17 year-old DJs with their bored-looking girlfriends on the "girlfriend seats" at One Stop a tad bit intimidating. (Oh, and no CDs - bleaugh!) Just my $0.02 on that subject.
Trance Trance Trance Confirmed -

Shouldn't the girlfriends be at the gym so that they can build up the strength to carry the record bags?
-

maybe its just a service/attitude thing.
Ryan Murphy Confirmed -

Slightly off topic perhaps, (sorry) but has anyone heard details yet about BGF seating for the parade this year? With about a month to go, their website still just says "watch this space". As I'm flying in from overseas for the big night, I'd kind of like to have everything organised so that the night runs smoothly.

Back on topic: If the dome is to become funky house, and dirty & tribal is moving to that other bit, where will all the bears and leather men be? In their traditional spot in the dome, or following the sexy music to a newer venue???

this leatherman hates funky house with a vengeance and will be found in stage 11.

The role of the "DJ Mole" is not just restricted to carrying record cases. Its a big gig. You need to be highly qualified and skilled to answer and carrying out the following requests ...

Hey DJ Mole, carry my record box

Hey DJ Mole, go get me a drink

Hey DJ Mole, put this record in its cover for me

Hey DJ Mole, grab my torch for me

Hey DJ Mole, Dont touch my headphones !!!

Hey DJ Mole, go find me a pill

Hey DJ Mole, see that boy over there ? Bring him over here.

Hey DJ Mole, That guys cute , Go get him for me.

Hey DJ Mole, Hail me a cab

This list goes on.... So folks, I'm still looking for my DJ Mole for Mardi Gras night. Any takers ??

Pinkboard is unable to verify this statement.

With Traktor it's

"Don't touch my laptop!"

But I do think the whole "Moll" terminology is a bit derogatory. I think I would prefer the term "Sweetie". As in...

"Hey Sweetie, Don't touch my laptop!"
Concerned Citizen -

Concerned Citizen - Thu 3 Feb 2005 15:37:39

"DJ Mole" is just a more contemporary term of "DJ Groupie". I have a number of friends who happily refer to themselves as my DJ Moles.

what hall you playing in? will put out for a ticket! especially to be a Dj Ho!
-

Hmmm yes, but as it's "Moll" and not "Mole" and the whole historical misogynistic gender thing that brings up with being derogatory to women and all, I would really urge the adoption of "Sweetie" or even "Luvvy". So much nicer.

I doubt Mandy Rollins or Feisty would call any of their DJ Luvvies "Molls".

Prepared to be corrected on that one, though(!)
Concerned Citizen for Feminist DJ Luvvies -

sneakslave - Thu 3 Feb 2005 13:02:18

The Mama bears will be in the Rhi with Goldie locks. The daddy bears will be in stage eleven, and the boy bears will be dancing in the breaks area. Where the pig bears will no doubt follow in the early morning.
-

Concerned Citizen for Feminist DJ Luvvies - Thu 3 Feb 2005 16:12:53

Why is it "Moll" and not "Mole" ? I've always called it Mole. I don't care what Mandy Rollins or Feisty opt to call their groupies. Nor do I find it derogatory specifically to women in the slightest. It's a comical term used in a friendly manner. There's honestly no need to be so damn politically correct.

ex dj moll -

as in Shannon Moll?
-

"Hey DJ Mole, Hail me a cab"? Go one better ...
"Hey DJ Mole, take me home"
groupie -

From my Macquarie Dictionary:

moll n. Colloq. 1. the girlfriend or mistress of a gangster, thief, etc. 2. see tart (defs 3 and 4) 3. see prostitute 4. the girlfriend of a surfie, bikie, etc
[Short for Molly, var. of Mary]

It was certainly derogatory when/were I grew up, but I guess words mean what we chose them to mean...
CeeJay Confirmed -

OH STOP IT PLEASE.

Its a DJ Mole .... M.O.L.E , not M.O.L.L

The term is used to describe the paralell drawn between the animal called a mole who like a beaver or a gopher is known as an animal that runs around collecting and doing things versus a person who runs around doing things (for a DJ) - Hence the term DJ MOLE.

M.O.L.L doesnt apply here. I thought the spelling of M.O.L.E made it obvious.

I really didnt think I had to explain it , but hey some people clearly aren't that bright ;)
-

Umm... moles don't run around collecting things - they burrow and undermine...

Why would a DJ want one of those when they have perfectly good PinkBoard posters to do that for them? :-P
Mrs Malaprop -

I was once asked to be a "ryder" or "rider" not sure which spelling, for a DJ a few years ago. That was the term at the time for someone who looks after a DJ's needs
-

I was just on the Mardi gras website looking at the Party information. First I couldn't find it on the menu, there were the other major events there, but no Party. Then I went to the page and there was virtually no detail. I couldn't even find the names of the DJs. There is more information here! I reckon Mardi Gras should make this the official party page.
-

sneakslave - Thu 3 Feb 2005 13:02:18

Not sure what is happening with seating for Mardi Gras

But........ I can tell you that NMG have told PWLHA and BGF they cannot run their usual concessions/bucket drops for the Launch and Fair Day so who knows what they have decided about the Seating for the Parade.

Just when you thought NMG were getting their act together they lock out these 2 and possibly more fantastic community Charities !

So NMG whats the story ? and if true
You had better back down or face the backlash -

Much as I love the Dome, I'll de-camp (;)) to wherever those sexy leathermen go (not being one myself though partial to their aroma and sometimes outrageous behaviour). Agree re moles' non-gathering habits. It's "moll" folks.
Paul "Dome" Diamondo -

"ryder" or "rider"

a rider is the package that a performer gets with the gig in addition to set fee, accomodation, transport (if they even get these things)

it usually is an esky of drinks at reasonable sized events

dj moles need to also be able to:

-unashamedly love their dj or 'host'
-let a dj know they suck without saying so,
-boost an inflated ego,
-source orange juice to prevent k holes
-source k to resume the attempt to return to a k hole
-deal with annoying requests
-fend off star f#%kers (well, unwanted ones)
-have at least 5 pairs of sunglasses on call, or the strangth to remove them from a punter

and it is M>O>L>E> in my family. like many dance culture words, it may or may not relate to its official meaning, but who cares, meaning is irrelevant when something sounds good (enter our era of culture incl music).

meaning is purely up to the receiver of any message, and is not a liberty those in the creation side of things can have anymore.

ps - love the bear to space breakdown...
-

I don't think that either BGF or PLWHA have ever been allowed to do bucket collections at Fair Day before other than at their own stalls and BGF have never done the launch, they do Shop Yourself Stupid and pre-parade. If MG let one group collect at Fair Day then they have to let all the others and we would spend our whole day there saying no or having very empty pockets. I have seen advertisements in the papers asking for collectors for PLWHA at the launch

Where are the DJ names on the Mardi Gras posters? Where are the DJ names on the Mardi Gras website? There's a 'media release' talking about the "vigorous selection procedure", though then fails to mention those who were selected. I had to check out the SSO website to find out the full list (as well as the board). An integral part of the party are the DJ's and as said before names are going to sell tickets. Think it's time to push the imagery to the back of the full page advertisements and ad some names to it. I think I recall the Sleaze posters ommited the DJ names once again.
Well done Mardi Gras for a great launch last night and here's to a successful party!

Launch was great. One issue. I fully realise the reason for alcohol not being allowed to be brought into the event. Why the over priced drinks. Why the ques for half an hour to get a drink. Can we expect the same to happen at fair day. If it does will be popping across to the pub so I can maximise my time and see everything. Will be quicker than trying to get a warm beer in a plastic cup.

"Why the over priced drinks".

NMG needs to make money out of Launch. Cash flow is always tight at this stage. If you ban BYO you've got a captive market and, in theory, you can charge what you like. But there's really no excuse for the queueing. You pitch your service delivery against anticipated attendance. Long bar queues detract from the party atmosphere, make people cranky and cut into your profit - if people can't get to the bar easily, turnover slows.

Been out of town for several years, but coming back this year for MG with my exotic foreign Boyf. Is there still VV trashy recovery on Sun am behind the Flinders or is that a thing of the past these days???

I'm guessing Village People for 2am show in RHI - though might be too busy having a wicked time in the Dome with funky house to go and check em out.....

Looks like the site has been updated in the last cuple of days.

Thought I'd change the pace a bit now. I'm really looking forward to coming down to Sydney for Mardi Gras party. The fact that Mardi Gras put on a retro space last year was the sole reason that me and a large possy of us BrisVegas queens made the journey down for the first time since the mid 90's. I'm very glad to see we are being catered to again. Also very glad to see that one of the DJ's who played the Mardi Gras retro space last year is getting another turn, great stuff !

I know Retro ain't everyone's cup of tea and I know you trance and house heads just think we are a bunch of Retro nerds but for people like me and my freinds who rarely go out its the only opportunity to listen to and dance to music that we know in a big party environment.

I'm so looking forward to re-uniting myself with all those freindly happy retro faces that I saw smiling and singing along in Stage 11 last March. I'll be arriving in the Fox and Lion at 10pm and wont be budging till they tell me to get out. Roll on the first Saturday in March I say :)

Inaya Day was interviewed on the radio over the weekend and said she was peforming in Sydney on the 5th March and was then following on with a tour with Mr Timothey, she then stopped herself and said 'she wasnt allowed to say that'

Make of that what you will!

Also hear they have secured a massive name for the RHI, but it would be wrong to leek that JUST yet!
-

Oh really ? Lets hope they can keep the massive name this time, they had one and lost one already :) ...I really do think it will be an awesome party either way though, so long as you can hear the music this year..
Looking Forward to it -

Last I heard they were having disscussions regarding it with fox and a team, but would really like to know the outcome!

It's not a Party if the sound is to be muffled!!
Need my ears buzzing =^.^= -

ryan murphy - Tue 8 Feb 2005 13:31:47

Ryan, I think you may be in luck - I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’ve heard the middle show actually has more than one big name and that everyone is being given glowsticks on their way into the party…

Guy Sebastian is going to sing a funky, dance version of “Climb Every Mountain” - the song he recently sang at a charity concert for the Tsunami victims. Part of the way through it will smoothly transition into “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” with Paulini and Cosima coming onstage to join Guy. During the second chorus four of the Dykes on Bikes will ride up through the middle of the RHI (kinda like Deborah Cox did) and all the others will ride onstage on tricycles. There will be some pyrotechnics at the end of the song and it’s going to look like the show’s over.

One of the pyrotechnics will look like it’s malfunctioned and after a big explosion Marcia & Deni Hines will appear from a trapdoor under the stage and they’ll all sing “We Are The World.” Halfway through, Shannon Noll will come on and everyone in the audience will be able to throw their glowsticks at him. (Because not everyone can fit in the RHI, Shannon will be appearing in each of the dedicated dance spaces afterwards so those that missed out will definitely get a chance. Extra glowsticks will be available from the Drug Rovers and the cloakroom)

Again, it will look like the show’s finished and the RHI will be plunged into darkness. Sirens will go off and a huge searchlight will point directly up into the rafters to reveal Madonna suspended by a single rope performing all those flexible yoga moves she loves so much while singing “Do It With Madonna.” She’ll then be lowered into the middle of the audience where she’ll have to fight her way through all her fans to make it to the stage. This will be filmed for her new reality TV show “Don’t You F****** Know Who I Am?!” If at any point she calls for help from her bodyguards, she has to sing a duet with David Hasselhoff to be released as a Charity Xmas single.

Once she makes it to the stage, Dannii, Kylie, Cher, Celine and Bette Midler will all take turns sitting on her face while Madonna tries to guess their weight and they all sing “The Macarena.” If she guesses incorrectly, she has to send her kids to stay with Michael Jackson for the weekend.

Everyone will come back onstage to sing “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” and when all the applause has died down Janet Jackson will run on and flash the breast we haven’t seen yet.

That’s all I’ve heard so far. I have absolutely no idea what they’ll do for the second half of the show though.

Hi all,

Well, its only "2 Dozen days" to the party and still no official statement from NMG on what actual actions will be implemented to resolve the sound isssues (volume not loud enough) in the RHI.

Its great they have set up a committee to investigate the problem. But will tyhat committee have power to make change? What we need is a solution, and action to put it in place.

I would suggest that anyone who is concerned that the volume level in the RHI will be similar to the last two parties (so low you could talk over it) emails NMG immediately and asks for some kind of statement on what actual actions or changes will be put in place.

A committee is nice, but its only step 1 to getting results. From what Ive read on here there seems to be a track record of NMG or various outsourced companies ignoring what some committee's have to say. We cant risk letting this happen on this issue.

This will make or break the party, we need music loud enough to dance to in the RHI and we must do everything we can to ensure that that happens.

Please if this concerns you, email NMG today and ask them whats happening, and when they will commit to, and provide details, of what actions and changes will be made.

I was going to copy the email addres to email NMG here for everyone but alas it seems I cant get to the website thismorning, Im sure it will be working again later, or that someone else can post it here for us all.

Please understand my intent is not a negative post. Im trying to mobilise community support to get something positive done for everyone who is dancing in the RHI.

I think this is way too important to simply trust "its ok we're working on it" as an answer.
Love you all :) -

Why not volunteer for a while and see if you can help at all. Channel those "F@#$ed off" energies into something constructive. Perhaps build some props for one of the halls? Even the RHI? Its a community party after all love, not a grudge match!
Here's to a great party! Happy Mardi Gras!

So, when is Two Tribes? Sydney: Sat 5th March
the plot thickens -

Yes to Indulgence. Meh! to Bonnie Tyler.

As for Cher my answer is: if not, then why the hell not? She owes us Big Time for resurrecting her career.

It's about time these divas started taking care of home with a little more grace. If Kylie can do it then so can Cher and Madonna etc. They shouldn't have to be paid to do it they should want to do it for their special gay audience and the cachet and the *lerve*. Just ask Kylie or Chaka Kahn what the greatest moment of their onstage career has been and they will answer "Mardi Gras". Probably Jimmy Somerville too.

The best Madonna could do was an "exclusive" video back in '95 or '96. Exclusive to us and few hundred other nightclub events around the world I reckon. What's with that, Madge?

Cher should be beating down the door in Petersham begging for a spot on the bill. Rather than her tour promoters doing categorical denials as if to say "go suck eggs".

I'll see her at the Ent Cent anyway but she should damn well be in the RHI at 3am as well!

And I'm sure she will be!

I wonder -

Now, who else sang " total eclipse..."?
-

Could it be Toni Basil? The one hit wonder from circa 82?
Oh Mickey! -

People performing live in Sydney within 10 days of mardigras include Vanessa Amorossi

Hmmm...
:) -

Well technically Bonnie Tyler had more than one hit as well so that rules her out. It's A Heartache was number one in in early 1978 - I remember watching Sounds on a Saturday morning (remember Donnie Sullivan on his sofa). Lost In France was also a hit sometime before this in late 77 (I remember that one from Countdown). And wasn't there more pompous Jim Steinman songs? I thought that there was a duet with Meatloaf in there somewhere as well (OK that was another pompous Jim Steinman number).

OK - Nicky French covered Total Eclipse. Nicky who you should ask? She's the faceless voice on any number of Almight remixes. If it's Nicky French, it might as well be Nicky Webster.
-

Who is Nicki French?
-

"Now, who else sang " total eclipse..."?
- Thu 10 Feb 2005 11:03:26"

Well AIR SUPPLY did a version - lol - they'd be GREAT for 3am at Mardi Gras hehe and of course one-hit wonder Nikki French did a dance version circa '94. I will literally roll on the floor in hysterics if it's Nikki French. All these twinks waiting breathless with excitment before the show;

"Is it Cher? Is It Bette Midler? Is it Kylie?"

"No...it's Nikki French."

"Who?"
-

I thought that Air Supply covered "Making Love Out of Nothing At All". Sounds the same as Total Eclipse I know.

Love & Other Bruises you know.
-

Turn around bright eyes......
but that's not all....there's much more...
- Wed 9 Feb 2005 21:25:38

Didn't Nicki French also put out a version of it sometime during the mid 90's???
-

"Turn around, bright eyes
Every now and then I fall apart
Turn around, bright eyes
Every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong together"

Nicki French's version came out in 1995.
-

Tina Arena will also be performing, but I say bring back Christine Anu swinging over the crowd singing "Sunshine" - that was a truely great mardi gras party moment!
-

Tina Arena and Nicki French - makes me wonder what century NMG are actually living in.
-

From SSO:

In party news, Mardi Gras confirmed this week what SSO revealed back in January: Tina Arena will perform at this year’s party, along with former Eurovision Song Contestant Nicki French.

French is best known for her 1995 Number One dance version of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse Of The Heart. According to Mardi Gras, more big names will be announced closer to the event.

oh well at least now I won't be so annoyed if I miss the shows!
there's always a bright side!!! ;) -

Nikki French??- who decides on this stuff??
Why is MG wasting their money on someone who's only hit was covering one song??-I dont know anyone that would actually say that they are a fan of hers or know anything about her as a person- Id love for someone to prove me wrong.
Can we at least wheel out Bonnie Tyler doing the original along side "I need a heroe" as well - that would be awesome in a creepy kinda way.
I dread to think of the sound system that could be afforded to the RHI instead of her airfares/accomodation and performance fees that will come in toe with her performing.
Nick -

Tina Arena and Nikki French? What is it about this assumed attraction that poofs are supposed to have for bottom-of-the-bill, straight Lounge Acts?

Sorry to go against the moaning vocal minority on this board ... but I am very happy Tina Arena is performing at the party ... a great singer and most definately not a bottom of the bill lounge act ... hope she does the great 'Symphony Of Life' remix ...

So NOT true. Neither Tina nor Nicki are booked to do shows.
Paul Diamondo -

I seriously doubt NMG would be stupid enough to do nothing about the RHI's sound. The bad-will it would cause and the number of people threatening to never attend again would seriously damage the cash flow for future parties.

Wait and see.

Shows schmows - best shows I remember :) were Dykes on Bikes one year when they came out in convertible cars and their bikes / and that awesome show was it Sleaze ? or NMG with the guy from Cirque de Soleil flying through the air - now that was awesome . In my and my pills opinion !

Retro Retro Retro Confirmed -

I absolutely love Tina, I saw here several years ago do a surprise performance at the Rod Laver Arena in front of a packed house, nobody had a clue she'd be on. Brought the house down.

Fast forward to MG (or was it Sleaze?) a couple of years ago. All she did was stand on stage in the RHI next to a piano and mime/sing "Symphony Of Life" then disappear down below the stage. Very underwhelming. Huge stage, tiny Tina.

I hope she has some hunky male dancers this time.

"Gay icons Tina Arena and Nicki French will spearhead a superstar line-up at this year's Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Party."

That's about the funniest sentence I've heard for a while!
-

So..Im assuming this means that the standard of party will be back to normal then pre solvency. Staging will look a little better than it has in the last few years with more than 1 rise and there may even be some flats and drapes aside the stage. Maybe the scenic crew have watched a few old videos to get some ideas on what the old girls stage should look like for a big star. Now where is that red sequin curtain........?
-

I dont doubt for a second that Tina will be at the party. she seems to be at every party these days
-

Tina sang Burn at my first Sleaze. And Symphony of Life at the closing party for Gay Games.

Maybe Tina Arena and Casey Donovan duetting on Symphony of Life in the RHI or a tribal remix of Chains in City Live.

Go Tina.

Ok, a small Poll of people please:

Do you prefer having the sound 'all around you' when on the floor of a dance space or coming from the DJ region only? i.e. speakers front and rear or just left & right of DJ?

Do you basically stay in the same general region on a dance floor throughout a party or move to many different spots?

Thanks for any input.

-All around me please! :-)

-Plenty of wandering with a general meeting space where we return to throughout the night.

Hi Noisy,

Definatley no question needed, sound should be all around. Sound at the front may work for the straight parties, who are fixed upon staring at the front. But for our parties, as everyones is moving around, the sound also needs to follow this.

Maybe I'm the only one who may feel like this, but I doubt it!
Big Party!! Needs the music to make you fuzzy!!! -

Noisy Gypsy - Fri 11 Feb 2005 09:49:57

All around baby! Above, below, up, down and through. With my short attention span I move around quite a bit and like the music to be the same volume wherever I go. Nothing worse than finding a great spot to dance but you can’t hear the music properly. Or standing up the front being blasted to smithereens because it’s so loud.

"What's with all the 'talent bashing' for the party?"

It's a cultural tradition.

"Has anyone heard Nicki French's new single 'I Surrender'?"

I haven't heard of Nikki French.

Noisy Gypsy - Fri 11 Feb 2005 09:49:57

Myself and most gay boys I observe are often roaming around from one part of the dance floor to the next.

Dance music requires sound on all sides, you need the full body experience to be taken away on your journey. Every decent nightclub in the world has sound on 4 sides its not rocket science.

We dont go to the party to mindlessly stare at some famous dj and bop along in our own little world.

Its a gay community party, we go to dance with eachother.

We face eachother (ie face all directions randomly all night) and we smile at eachother while totally off our faces :)

Music (especially trance) MUST be from all sides.
:) -

I am sick of hearling all those negative comments about the show.... It would be nicer if Cher or Madonna will performe for sure. But Can't we be more supportive for OUR community, please?? Tina did great job a couple of years ago at sleeze(maybe MG) and Nicki French might not sounds familer but we all know her song for sure.
It's good thing that you all try to improve MG party by giving comments but let's stop talent bashing. Its OUR commuity and we are the ones that support them. Come on guys!!
-

To allay the critics over my motives for asking such questions, although I've always maintained a stance on one type of speaker design for gay dance parties, I'm interested in others' point of views regarding our parties and their designs and your dancing position/s throughout the night. It may be a useful poll regarding what the punters want.... Pinkboard may not be truly democratic but it is a widely read sounding board. Thanks for any comments.
Noisy Gypsy Confirmed -

Well I've always thought that 'sound should be all around' but the front-of-house set up at Big Queer Nation was very impressive. Of course that was the Hordern. For we may well say "God Save The Queen" but nothing, I fear, will save the RHI. :-)
(Not) The Governer General -

No i prefer to have music all around, and i definitely move around the venue.

Noisy Gypsy - Fri 11 Feb 2005 09:49:57

At the MG party Im going to be moving around a lot so everyone can see my t shirt that says "Im going to toybox so I dont care how crap the sound is here, nyer ni nyer ni nyer nyer nyer!".

OUR community,please??
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 11:28:38

What are you smoking? Tina isnt our community. Our Drag queens are. And theyre a lot cheaper too :) ..why do we need some famous str8 person to make us all squeal like girls?

Our party
Our performers
Our fun
Our community

We really need to get over the need to validate ourselves with some level of famous outsider at our parties. And to be honest I think record companies should be paying us to launch or re launch the careers of people not the other way round.

Doesnt matter if its Madonna or Kylie or Tina or Jimmy Barnes, if your going to use the "support our community" line I think your missing the point.

Is either Tina Arena or Nikki French a lesbian?
Carpet Court -

NG - The Party Committee is meeting next week to map out our timetable for the night. Given the amazing choice this year, I think it's going to be a quite complicated agenda.

As for Nicki French - I though that the issue was that she was a nobody and not that she was straight. For god's sake, Kylie's straight!
-

Who are you guys kidding? Many on this board seem to have paid several hundred dollars to stand/sit and listen to Cher or Kylie and to face the front, sighing at their every move.

If you do not feel the same about the dance music delivery specialists then that is all good, but to slag off straight crowds who actually go out for the music is rather short-sighted. If you looked that way, you might realise that DJs are every bit the performers some divas are, and I am not talking about lip syncing to someone else's in-studio take on their voices. I'm suggesting you watch their hands. Watch their eyes. You might actually notice that something IS worth watching
FACE THE FRONT - just once, i doubledare you -

Tina and Nikki are dykes!????

No excuses. Now you know who she is!

"As for Nicki French - I though that the issue was that she was a nobody and not that she was straight. For god's sake, Kylie's straight!"

Nicki French is English, a nobody and she's straight. Kylie is a somebody, Australian and straight. And - for better or worse - universally acknowledged as an Australian gay icon. It seems to me that there's a significant difference between the two when you weigh all the factors. I'm sure she's talented but there's probably at least 20 or so local poofs and dykes who could offer a spectacle potentially more thrilling than that obtainable from Ms French.

Yes but not ALL night! Straight crowds, with exceptions of course, generally stay in the same spot and face the front all night...BORING

Comment to the previous post, "Nicki French is English, a nobody and she's straight." Do you suggest we put on someone like Michal Nicolas, gay, local and far less talent than Nicki? Narrow minds is all I can say! Nicki may not 'appear' locally on our gay scene though I have actually seen Nicki perform at 2 other international gay events and she has been greatly welcomed. I assume you have also seen her perform to suggest that she cannot perform a thrilling spectacle?
I suppose you may also want to drop Tina Arena as well now? Her last performance at the Gay Games party was her standing beside a piano. I loved it though may not be the spectacle you are looking for.
Maybe it's a drag show you are looking for? I'm sure there's one on in town somewhere the night of the party you can pop yourself down to watch.

I never said that Tina is our community. but NMG is the one that decided to have Tina for the party.
So I simply thought we all should respect NMG's(our community) decision rather than complaining.

nope, i disagree. tis fun to watch a whole movie, a whole play a whole sex display....

what stop halfway or after a few minutes? you're missing it.... oops there it was, missed it again....

I actually dont think anyone at all was complaining about Tina or Nikki, IMHO we were all just taking the piss and having some fun, then someone posted accusing us all of complaining, which was a bit like throwing kerosine onto a fire or waving a red flag to a bull :)
-

Do you prefer having the sound 'all around you'? Yes!!

Do you basically stay in the same general region on a dance floor throughout a party? No!!

I find symmetry important when it comes to sound and lighting as I am always facing in totally random directions. It would also be ideal for the visuals to be on all sides as well, but can understand it would be prohibitively expensive to have screens everywhere. The visuals in The Horden last year were great, but having all the sound coming from the DJ end, I found the volume was overpowering except at the other end of the pavillion. The sound clarity was tremendous in The Horden however - presumably because it was airconditioned as opposed to the oppressive humidity that was in the RHI. Having lasers in two diagonal corners of the Horden dancefloor seemed unbalanced.

Looking forward to checking out what this amounts to:

http://www.mardigras.org.au/Media/MediaReleases/media_release_09_feb_2005_partyperformers.aspx

And the laser configuration in the Hordern is unlike anything ever assembled at a Mardi Gras Party.

-

i think you should get over the whole mardi gras thing - the imagery of the festival sucks, the party line up is rotten and all the good djs are plonked out in the fox and lion - why am i going to want to pay $99 to go to a pub?
Mardi Gras - get over yourselves and stop acting like the old mardi gras - it seems that there are a few people making it all about themselves, and not about the community. Pity - it could have been really good... has anyone else seen anything in the mainstream about this years festival? I havent seen any posters around anywhere - it really seems like it isnt on this year...
suburbsboy -

i think it would be brilliant if Tina Arena performed at the party - she was brilliant at Sleaze years ago, and she represents a hell of alot of what the community is about! Tina Arena is as gay as anyone on this message board - her openness, love and mainstream appeal makes it a great thing - i do think drag queens are fun, but not at every party - i want a party where a mainstream star can feel as compfortable as we are there... you know, how about inclusiveness, and making sure that our community includes all the best bits of society... i for one would prefer great inclusive entertainment - than having to pay a shit load of money to see some old hack drag queen who you can see vomiting in a gutter or working in some scene store every day of the week! if you wanna see that, then go out to the clubs - not a major big time event! thats like saying you would be happy seeing a drag queen on stage at a cher concert - rather than cher!!! GEEZ!
suburbsboy -

FACE THE FRONT - just once, i doubledare you - Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:24:23

At the Horden a couple of years back(can't remember which party) where the DJs were playing in a huge revolving booth in the middle of the dance floor, you would have had to run around in circles all night to face the front. lol......mmmm hope they bring that back this year.
-

Maybe I am just always having way too much fun at the parties and I mean no disrespect to the DJ's in saying this, but I am usually so caught up in the music and the lights and the fun that I'm having that only once, in 10 years of parties have I ever even seen/noticed the DJ box. Makes me wonder...if I've missed that, how much else have I been missing out on seeing? :-)

Noisy Gypsy - Fri 11 Feb 2005 09:49:57
All around baby as Dan says. One side only is crapola.

FACE THE FRONT - just once, i doubledare you - Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:24:23
Been there, done that, experienced the crappiness of one-sided sound and (sorry Brad) one sided lasers. Might be an interesting look to the front but I want to watch and play with my friends and still see a light show and hear the sound no matter what way I'm facing.

Hopefully (and I can't believe not) the lasers in the Hordern will be coming from all sides.

tina ROCKS!!!

This comment was on the NMG wall. I felt it belonged here, as does my response:

This is pathatic!! How can they consciously throw a party with 1 of the main room substanded?

I am really F@#$ed off now!!

RHI needs to be fixed we are paying very good money for money hungry people. If money needs to be spent to make it adequate then do it, or else find another venue. As we know there are none, solution is put extra money into to fixing it.

The money generated from ticket sales is huge, explain why the buffering system cannot be used?
Stop trying to cut costs mardi gras! - Wed 9 Feb 2005 15:37:53

This issue has been addressed many times, on many different walls. Although questioning problems is definitely healthy, perhaps you should educate yourself before you start throwing things like this around.

Firstly, NMG has no control over the structure or the infrustructure of the RHI. It'd be like saying, "alright, I've hired the local RSL for a family function, but I don't really like those garish lights, so they're gone. And, while I'm at it, I also don't really like the carpet - that's gone too".

Secondly, should, hypothetically, but PLEASE refer back to point one, NMG be able to do something about the sound issues in the RHI it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fit out a room that size. Yes, you are right, takings from the tickets of MG party and Sleaze are large, however it's not like that money goes into somebodies pocket as profit. It is reinvested in the organisation to pay for Fair Day, Launch, Sleaze, etc. It's one big gay merry go round.

If you expect something to be done about the sound from a structural point of view, I suggest you contact the Moore Park Trust, or more to the point Fox Studios - the current resident of this space.

But from a personal point of view I have to say that when I'm down on the dancefloor boogying away, the music sounds plenty loud to me. I think you might just need to turn your hearing aid up love!!!! (please note this is a joke, I'm not trying to inflame any time of situation.)

And one other thing while you've got me going! I seriously think that people need to just chill our about what a terrible job NMG are doing with our parties. I personally love the parties - may have to do with the fact that I put in countless hours from the inside. Yes, we're all paying a lot of money to get in, and yes, they may not be like the "good old days", but guess what... these aren't the good old days.

It's not like before where everyone in the organisation knew someone who knew someone who knew someone could do a job professionally... for free. Now NMG needs to pay for services. So you know what my suggestion is? If you can do it... DO IT! Help out, volunteer, be useful. Put your skills to practice and help make the party the best damn community event that you can!!!! And remember girls and girls... it is a community event - there is no profit to be made.

It's YOUR Mardi Gras, make of it what you will!
