DJs have been announced. Rumours of shows are starting to spread. The season is about to launch. Ticket prices are go up soon (11th Feb).
All this is saying Mardi Gras is fast approaching. All this is saying excitement is mounting. All this is saying is better start sewing or shopping for something to wear.
So have you slept with someone who knows the hairdresser of the bodyguard of someone famous who is definitely performing a duet with Cher at the party? If so, then let us all know here as soon as you can. (Pinkboard can neither confirm nor deny any rumours that appear on these pages until 6th March.)
Otherwise see you under the mirror ball on Saturday 5th March.
This wall is for the Party. Please discuss the Mardi Gras Festival (including Launch, Fair Day and Parade) on the Festival Wall.

I think I like the variety of DJ's on offer for the party, and will have much fun on our wanderings. But I reckon I'll be hanging out in Stage 11 mostly for Sveta and Feisty, with some stickybeaking in on Mr 4Strings and his mega-set and for Hordern lights and atmosphere. Mr Blomfield will be a tired boy, though. I haven't partied before in the Fox and Cocks or Hounds and Lion or whatever it's called.
Shall we post track requests on the off chance that sets have not yet been finalised? In which case, I like that one "You bring light in", because it always makes me feel happy.

I was recently working on compiling the first mixed CD for Stonewall in association with Central Station. It was due out in time for Mardi Gras. However half way through the process it got stalled and postponed. Why? Well I guess it was so that Central could release their own Mardi Gras themed CD without any competition.
Compilation politics! Who da thunk it?

That track is originally by Underworld (Two months off?) and I remember it being played by Neal Crawford at Inquisition at Stage 11 last year. Love it also and I really hope someone plays it at Mardi Gras.

Will she be there on the night?
- Wed 2 Feb 2005 12:27:53
In answer to this question - some people have commented that they never know what to expect from the sets I play. This is because I usually take a different approach to each event, and like to try something new each time to keep the audience interested. At the moment, I am really attracted to the electro/industrial tribal sound - and this seems to be sticking.
As you will find in any large city, there are different scenes in Brisbane. Neroli is a Wickham/Fluffy DJ - whereas I am in the process of creating my own night with different music and a different audience to what the commercial venues offer. This should give you some idea of how to compare us as DJs - but I'd be really interested to know what you actually think!

The artwork on the Sanity site has the NMG logo with the "New" replaced by "2005", but says it's not the actual art work.

Well anyone would realize it makes financial and communnity sense for Central Station to focus their energies on a Mardi Gras CD. I remember once that Mr Leal was the poster boy for Mardi Gras when his cd came out. Step aside Luke and let Mardi Gras shine! By releasing a CD at festival time Stonewall are just cashing in on the season, Mardi Gras IS the season. Buck up kid! Your cd will see the light of day oneday- unless its been canned completely because of your latest post, which, in the opinon of this poster, appears to be sour grapes. Compilation politics, no. Pragmatic business yes.
Congrats Mardi Gras for getting together in time. So is it mixed by any one local? Or is it another Paul Goodyear studio edit? Good to see Mardi Gras opening up the local contributors (5 or 6 - a new record!) and actually having at least one gay artist on a Gay & Lesbian cd. Congrats!
Fingers crossed that Dannii can't make it - its all about Kylie anyway! Heres hoping Luke gets some action. It aint been a great start to 2005 for him poor lad.
cd queenie - Wed 2 Feb 2005 13:50:36
Paul Goodyear *IS* a local DJ. In my opinion, I think he's Sydney's best.
- Wed 2 Feb 2005 14:00:37
Oh, FFS! Honestly, does it really matter? This discussion has been brought up so many times! Paul might not be gay, but he is a gay institution. He's regularly refuses to play at straight venues and straight events because he simply prefers the gay ones. He's provided a massive influence in our community and our music styles. That's a lot more than what some of our gay and lesbian DJs can claim.
- Wed 2 Feb 2005 15:07:03
Are you sure Central Station isn't doing exactly that?
Why is it called "Oxford Street Mardi Gras"?
- Wed 2 Feb 2005 15:07:06
i think Paul is so good he deserves to be called...
PAUL GODYEAH!!!
- Wed 2 Feb 2005 15:45:12
Thanks for the highly facetious post 'queenie' but your fingers have leapt to the keyboard a little to quickly. The CD in question has nothing to do with Mardi Gras the organisation and is not official. Gone are the days when Mr Cobden would come crashing down like gods thunder on anyone daring to cash in on the Mardi Gras name! Now anyone can (and does) take advantage of the blood, sweat & sequins we've all poured into the name. (A Melbourne Joy FM cd this time last year did the same thing) The Stonewall disc had a planned release date round MG time, it wasn't abducting the Mardi Gras name.
I have no probs with MG - a quick glance at my home page and you'll see a promotional graphic for the festival, which is linked to their web page. I'm PROUD of my association with Mardi Gras, I'm not going to let one disagreement ruin that. I was more amused by the CD situation than pissed off (hence the smiley face). So my grapes are sweet and plump thank yew very much!

Neroli also recently played in Adelaide for Feast Festival's Taboo Party with Matt Steer and was very well received.
As for Les Smith, what can I say, he is also a regular and mainstay of TF parties, knows how to read the crowd and keeps the floor packed and pumping all night
congrats to all the DJ's selected for MG05
cheers!

Was last years CD produced by Melbourne's JOY Radio any different?
As NMG were't not in a position to produce a CD Compilation previously, others have stepped in and filled the void
cheers!
- Wed 2 Feb 2005 16:06:55
I am on your side anyway ..... Why is Central putting out a CD anyway? Are they going to donate any profits to NMG? I like the CD's that have been done in the past but they have had decent level of community input ( ie GAY DJ's)
Last time i checked Central are not to gay friendly..... One stop is a different story but thats a whole different conversation for another board.

Oh, and I also think Central Station are quite gay-friendly. Always have been to me and, for one thing, they have CD singles galore and even a wee bit of eye candy behind the counter. I actually find all the hard house on the monitors and the 17 year-old DJs with their bored-looking girlfriends on the "girlfriend seats" at One Stop a tad bit intimidating. Why is it "Moll" and not "Mole" ? I've always called it Mole. I don't care what Mandy Rollins or Feisty opt to call their groupies. Nor do I find it derogatory specifically to women in the slightest. It's a comical term used in a friendly manner. There's honestly no need to be so damn politically correct.

moll n. Colloq. 1. the girlfriend or mistress of a gangster, thief, etc. 2. see tart (defs 3 and 4) 3. see prostitute 4. the girlfriend of a surfie, bikie, etc

It was certainly derogatory when/were I grew up, but I guess words mean what we chose them to mean...

Its a DJ Mole .... M.O.L.E , not M.O.L.L
The term is used to describe the paralell drawn between the animal called a mole who like a beaver or a gopher is known as an animal that runs around collecting and doing things versus a person who runs around doing things (for a DJ) - Hence the term DJ MOLE.
M.O.L.L doesnt apply here. I thought the spelling of M.O.L.E made it obvious.
I really didnt think I had to explain it , but hey some people clearly aren't that bright

Not sure what is happening with seating for Mardi Gras
But........ I can tell you that NMG have told PWLHA and BGF they cannot run their usual concessions/bucket drops for the Launch and Fair Day so who knows what they have decided about the Seating for the Parade.
Just when you thought NMG were getting their act together they lock out these 2 and possibly more fantastic community Charities !
So NMG whats the story ? and if true

) to wherever those sexy leathermen go (not being one myself though partial to their aroma and sometimes outrageous behaviour). Agree re moles' non-gathering habits. It's "moll" folks.a rider is the package that a performer gets with the gig in addition to set fee, accomodation, transport (if they even get these things)
it usually is an esky of drinks at reasonable sized events
dj moles need to also be able to:
-unashamedly love their dj or 'host'
-let a dj know they suck without saying so,
-boost an inflated ego,
-source orange juice to prevent k holes
-source k to resume the attempt to return to a k hole
-deal with annoying requests
-fend off star f#%kers (well, unwanted ones)
-have at least 5 pairs of sunglasses on call, or the strangth to remove them from a punter
and it is M>O>L>E> in my family. like many dance culture words, it may or may not relate to its official meaning, but who cares, meaning is irrelevant when something sounds good (enter our era of culture incl music).
meaning is purely up to the receiver of any message, and is not a liberty those in the creation side of things can have anymore.

NMG needs to make money out of Launch. Cash flow is always tight at this stage. If you ban BYO you've got a captive market and, in theory, you can charge what you like. But there's really no excuse for the queueing. You pitch your service delivery against anticipated attendance. Long bar queues detract from the party atmosphere, make people cranky and cut into your profit - if people can't get to the bar easily, turnover slows.

Ryan, I think you may be in luck - I don’t know if it’s true or not, but I’ve heard the middle show actually has more than one big name and that everyone is being given glowsticks on their way into the party…
Guy Sebastian is going to sing a funky, dance version of “Climb Every Mountain” - the song he recently sang at a charity concert for the Tsunami victims. Part of the way through it will smoothly transition into “Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves” with Paulini and Cosima coming onstage to join Guy. During the second chorus four of the Dykes on Bikes will ride up through the middle of the RHI (kinda like Deborah Cox did) and all the others will ride onstage on tricycles. There will be some pyrotechnics at the end of the song and it’s going to look like the show’s over.
One of the pyrotechnics will look like it’s malfunctioned and after a big explosion Marcia & Deni Hines will appear from a trapdoor under the stage and they’ll all sing “We Are The World.” Halfway through, Shannon Noll will come on and everyone in the audience will be able to throw their glowsticks at him. (Because not everyone can fit in the RHI, Shannon will be appearing in each of the dedicated dance spaces afterwards so those that missed out will definitely get a chance. Extra glowsticks will be available from the Drug Rovers and the cloakroom)
Again, it will look like the show’s finished and the RHI will be plunged into darkness. Sirens will go off and a huge searchlight will point directly up into the rafters to reveal Madonna suspended by a single rope performing all those flexible yoga moves she loves so much while singing “Do It With Madonna.” She’ll then be lowered into the middle of the audience where she’ll have to fight her way through all her fans to make it to the stage. This will be filmed for her new reality TV show “Don’t You F****** Know Who I Am?!” If at any point she calls for help from her bodyguards, she has to sing a duet with David Hasselhoff to be released as a Charity Xmas single.
Once she makes it to the stage, Dannii, Kylie, Cher, Celine and Bette Midler will all take turns sitting on her face while Madonna tries to guess their weight and they all sing “The Macarena.” If she guesses incorrectly, she has to send her kids to stay with Michael Jackson for the weekend.
Everyone will come back onstage to sing “For He’s A Jolly Good Fellow” and when all the applause has died down Janet Jackson will run on and flash the breast we haven’t seen yet.
That’s all I’ve heard so far. I have absolutely no idea what they’ll do for the second half of the show though.

Well, its only "2 Dozen days" to the party and still no official statement from NMG on what actual actions will be implemented to resolve the sound isssues (volume not loud enough) in the RHI.
Its great they have set up a committee to investigate the problem. But will tyhat committee have power to make change? What we need is a solution, and action to put it in place.
I would suggest that anyone who is concerned that the volume level in the RHI will be similar to the last two parties (so low you could talk over it) emails NMG immediately and asks for some kind of statement on what actual actions or changes will be put in place.
A committee is nice, but its only step 1 to getting results. From what Ive read on here there seems to be a track record of NMG or various outsourced companies ignoring what some committee's have to say. We cant risk letting this happen on this issue.
This will make or break the party, we need music loud enough to dance to in the RHI and we must do everything we can to ensure that that happens.
Please if this concerns you, email NMG today and ask them whats happening, and when they will commit to, and provide details, of what actions and changes will be made.
I was going to copy the email addres to email NMG here for everyone but alas it seems I cant get to the website thismorning, Im sure it will be working again later, or that someone else can post it here for us all.
Please understand my intent is not a negative post. Im trying to mobilise community support to get something positive done for everyone who is dancing in the RHI.
I think this is way too important to simply trust "its ok we're working on it" as an answer.
Love you all

Thanks for your response ..as I feared, this is still well up shit creek. I hope a dozen or so people phone or at least email Mardi Gras on this issue. A few people have already stated on here that they wont buy a ticket until they know this is fixed, its a shame we have to fight so hard to fix something thats so blatantly wrong.
Love you all

Please, "cost cutting" ? Mardi Gras are trying to get something going resolved on this issue. In addition, this years dj line up is the most diverse ever. There are extra halls too.
Why not volunteer for a while and see if you can help at all. Channel those "F@#$ed off" energies into something constructive. Perhaps build some props for one of the halls? Even the RHI? Its a community party after all love, not a grudge match!
Here's to a great party! Happy Mardi Gras!

As for Cher my answer is: if not, then why the hell not? She owes us Big Time for resurrecting her career.
It's about time these divas started taking care of home with a little more grace. If Kylie can do it then so can Cher and Madonna etc. They shouldn't have to be paid to do it they should want to do it for their special gay audience and the cachet and the *lerve*. Just ask Kylie or Chaka Kahn what the greatest moment of their onstage career has been and they will answer "Mardi Gras". Probably Jimmy Somerville too.
The best Madonna could do was an "exclusive" video back in '95 or '96. Exclusive to us and few hundred other nightclub events around the world I reckon. What's with that, Madge?
Cher should be beating down the door in Petersham begging for a spot on the bill. Rather than her tour promoters doing categorical denials as if to say "go suck eggs".
I'll see her at the Ent Cent anyway but she should damn well be in the RHI at 3am as well!
And I'm sure she will be!

Well AIR SUPPLY did a version - lol - they'd be GREAT for 3am at Mardi Gras hehe and of course one-hit wonder Nikki French did a dance version circa '94. I will literally roll on the floor in hysterics if it's Nikki French. All these twinks waiting breathless with excitment before the show;
"Is it Cher? Is It Bette Midler? Is it Kylie?"
"No...it's Nikki French."

'Cause we'll never be wrong together"
Nicki French's version came out in 1995.

In party news, Mardi Gras confirmed this week what SSO revealed back in January: Tina Arena will perform at this year’s party, along with former Eurovision Song Contestant Nicki French.
French is best known for her 1995 Number One dance version of Bonnie Tyler’s Total Eclipse Of The Heart. According to Mardi Gras, more big names will be announced closer to the event.

Do you prefer having the sound 'all around you' when on the floor of a dance space or coming from the DJ region only? i.e. speakers front and rear or just left & right of DJ?
Do you basically stay in the same general region on a dance floor throughout a party or move to many different spots?
Thanks for any input.

-Plenty of wandering with a general meeting space where we return to throughout the night.
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 10:40:23
Hi Noisy,
Definatley no question needed, sound should be all around. Sound at the front may work for the straight parties, who are fixed upon staring at the front. But for our parties, as everyones is moving around, the sound also needs to follow this.
Maybe I'm the only one who may feel like this, but I doubt it!
Big Party!! Needs the music to make you fuzzy!!! - Fri 11 Feb 2005 10:51:12
All around baby! Above, below, up, down and through. With my short attention span I move around quite a bit and like the music to be the same volume wherever I go. Nothing worse than finding a great spot to dance but you can’t hear the music properly. Or standing up the front being blasted to smithereens because it’s so loud.

I haven't heard of Nikki French.
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 11:13:23
Myself and most gay boys I observe are often roaming around from one part of the dance floor to the next.
Dance music requires sound on all sides, you need the full body experience to be taken away on your journey. Every decent nightclub in the world has sound on 4 sides its not rocket science.
We dont go to the party to mindlessly stare at some famous dj and bop along in our own little world.
Its a gay community party, we go to dance with eachother.
We face eachother (ie face all directions randomly all night) and we smile at eachother while totally off our faces
Music (especially trance) MUST be from all sides.

What are you smoking? Tina isnt our community. Our Drag queens are. And theyre a lot cheaper too
..why do we need some famous str8 person to make us all squeal like girls?
Our party
Our performers
Our fun
Our community
We really need to get over the need to validate ourselves with some level of famous outsider at our parties. And to be honest I think record companies should be paying us to launch or re launch the careers of people not the other way round.
Doesnt matter if its Madonna or Kylie or Tina or Jimmy Barnes, if your going to use the "support our community" line I think your missing the point.
Is either Tina Arena or Nikki French a lesbian?
Carpet Court - Fri 11 Feb 2005 11:55:07
As for Nicki French - I though that the issue was that she was a nobody and not that she was straight. For god's sake, Kylie's straight!
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:10:27
If you do not feel the same about the dance music delivery specialists then that is all good, but to slag off straight crowds who actually go out for the music is rather short-sighted. If you looked that way, you might realise that DJs are every bit the performers some divas are, and I am not talking about lip syncing to someone else's in-studio take on their voices. I'm suggesting you watch their hands. Watch their eyes. You might actually notice that something IS worth watching
FACE THE FRONT - just once, i doubledare you - Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:24:23
Tina and Nikki are dykes!????
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:25:20
No excuses. Now you know who she is!
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:29:12
Nicki French is English, a nobody and she's straight. Kylie is a somebody, Australian and straight. And - for better or worse - universally acknowledged as an Australian gay icon. It seems to me that there's a significant difference between the two when you weigh all the factors. I'm sure she's talented but there's probably at least 20 or so local poofs and dykes who could offer a spectacle potentially more thrilling than that obtainable from Ms French.
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 13:04:22
Yes but not ALL night! Straight crowds, with exceptions of course, generally stay in the same spot and face the front all night...BORING

I never said that Tina is our community. but NMG is the one that decided to have Tina for the party.

- Fri 11 Feb 2005 18:11:15

Do you basically stay in the same general region on a dance floor throughout a party? No!!
I find symmetry important when it comes to sound and lighting as I am always facing in totally random directions. It would also be ideal for the visuals to be on all sides as well, but can understand it would be prohibitively expensive to have screens everywhere. The visuals in The Horden last year were great, but having all the sound coming from the DJ end, I found the volume was overpowering except at the other end of the pavillion. The sound clarity was tremendous in The Horden however - presumably because it was airconditioned as opposed to the oppressive humidity that was in the RHI. Having lasers in two diagonal corners of the Horden dancefloor seemed unbalanced.
Looking forward to checking out what this amounts to:
http://www.mardigras.org.au/Media/MediaReleases/media_release_09_feb_2005_partyperformers.aspx
And the laser configuration in the Hordern is unlike anything ever assembled at a Mardi Gras Party.
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 19:20:37
At the Horden a couple of years back(can't remember which party) where the DJs were playing in a huge revolving booth in the middle of the dance floor, you would have had to run around in circles all night to face the front. lol......mmmm hope they bring that back this year.
- Fri 11 Feb 2005 19:58:12

FACE THE FRONT - just once, i doubledare you - Fri 11 Feb 2005 12:24:23
Been there, done that, experienced the crappiness of one-sided sound and (sorry Brad) one sided lasers. Might be an interesting look to the front but I want to watch and play with my friends and still see a light show and hear the sound no matter what way I'm facing.
Hopefully (and I can't believe not) the lasers in the Hordern will be coming from all sides.

RHI needs to be fixed we are paying very good money for money hungry people. If money needs to be spent to make it adequate then do it, or else find another venue. As we know there are none, solution is put extra money into to fixing it.
The money generated from ticket sales is huge, explain why the buffering system cannot be used?
Stop trying to cut costs mardi gras! - Wed 9 Feb 2005 15:37:53
This issue has been addressed many times, on many different walls. Although questioning problems is definitely healthy, perhaps you should educate yourself before you start throwing things like this around.
Firstly, NMG has no control over the structure or the infrustructure of the RHI. It'd be like saying, "alright, I've hired the local RSL for a family function, but I don't really like those garish lights, so they're gone. And, while I'm at it, I also don't really like the carpet - that's gone too".
Secondly, should, hypothetically, but PLEASE refer back to point one, NMG be able to do something about the sound issues in the RHI it would cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to fit out a room that size. Yes, you are right, takings from the tickets of MG party and Sleaze are large, however it's not like that money goes into somebodies pocket as profit. It is reinvested in the organisation to pay for Fair Day, Launch, Sleaze, etc. It's one big gay merry go round.
If you expect something to be done about the sound from a structural point of view, I suggest you contact the Moore Park Trust, or more to the point Fox Studios - the current resident of this space.
But from a personal point of view I have to say that when I'm down on the dancefloor boogying away, the music sounds plenty loud to me. I think you might just need to turn your hearing aid up love!!!! (please note this is a joke, I'm not trying to inflame any time of situation.)
And one other thing while you've got me going! I seriously think that people need to just chill our about what a terrible job NMG are doing with our parties. I personally love the parties - may have to do with the fact that I put in countless hours from the inside. Yes, we're all paying a lot of money to get in, and yes, they may not be like the "good old days", but guess what... these aren't the good old days.
It's not like before where everyone in the organisation knew someone who knew someone who knew someone could do a job professionally... for free. Now NMG needs to pay for services. So you know what my suggestion is? If you can do it... DO IT! Help out, volunteer, be useful. Put your skills to practice and help make the party the best damn community event that you can!!!! And remember girls and girls... it is a community event - there is no profit to be made.
It's YOUR Mardi Gras, make of it what you will!
