Below is a post I planned to do some work on, but I have decided to publish as is in a tribute to Paul Mees who died yesterday at the very young age of 52. He was much more than just a clever bloke and public transport activist. I doubt I would have such interest in public transport had I not been stimulated by frequently hearing Paul speaking in an informed and educated manner, yet also using great common sense. He is well known around the world in public transport circles and he will be much missed.

A train to the our airport? Not if it takes 30 minutes, thank you very much. What is the point of building a train line to the airport if the trip will take longer than a bus? I think it should be a ten minute trip.

The beautiful weather continues and today Kip and I headed south and went for a hike this morning. It was nice and we both got a little colour despite putting sun tan lotion on a couple of times.

Since getting back from our hike we’ve been working away and I have a couple of days with a bunch of work that I would like to get finished – one ‘chore’ is a new full length DVD which takes about 4 hours for me to do which I’ll try tomorrow morning first thing.

It is icy cold again today.

This morning, at least, I got my lazy arse out of bed and walked Santo into the CBD, well, the edge. I stand on the La Trobe Street side of the Exhibition Gardens and wave him good bye as he heads into the CBD. I keep waving until he disappears out of sight, which is behind the wire fence of the meteorological measuring station. I guess that is what it is called.

Then Buddy and I turn around and head home again.

It is freezing again today. I guess I say that as if I don't like it, which isn't exactly true. I find the cold quite bracing and it is good to get out and walk in it. While I don't, exactly, like it on my fingers and my feet, I don't mind it at all really. I love the breath visibly puffing out of my mouth. I like wrapping myself up in big woolley coats.

I like the seasons.

New Carpet

How frequently should one change their bed sheets?

Here at the field station, the answer is once a week.

My colleague's 18yo daughter just started working here as a house cleaner for the summer. Today, she told her mum (who then told me) that they were cleaning my room and apparently the older ladies were curious why I hadn't changed my sheets (despite leaving me a fresh set every week).

I thought I was being considerate. Instead they think I am a pig.

I have lapsed recently, but for about 8 months up to about a month ago I lived an abstemious life almost totally off the booze and the cigarettes.

A couple of months ago, I was walking out of the opera house talking to a friend after a concert. I was stopped not once but twice by the bouncers of the “Opera” bar. I could in fact just have been walking home past the bar (because it is an outdoor spot with a right of passage through it to the carpark, the bouncers seem to enlarge their jurisdiction to extend to this) but in fact I was planning to meet a friend from interstate who was waiting for me there.

Was it my gait? Was it my garb? Was it my age? Both, and the second more than the first, asked me those questions about what I had had to drink. These are questions which I am not asked often, and certainly not when I haven’t had a drink for some months.

In the end they let me in. I suppose I could have called my friend

VCAT strikes again. Among single, two storey and low three story buildings that surround the old Yorkshire Brewery site in Collingwood, VCAT has struck again, overriding City of Yarra and approving three 17 storey apartment towers. What does that do for the local character of one of Melbourne's oldest suburbs? VCAT is a disgrace and clearly there to support developers to maximise their profits, against local representative councils and local people.

I've just ploughed through the judgement. There are many conditions attached to the approval, but as I have discovered, the developer will quietly return to VCAT without any resident knowing and have the ones it finds onerous overturned, as the developer did across the road over public access between two streets.

However, be that as it may, it has now come to it... cleaning and tiding. Groan. So, I have been throwing shit out for a few hours. I am a few IQ points away from being an obsessive hoarder, so it has to be done from time to time. It started out with me filing my bank statements into their statement folder... and it just snowballed from there. I have now thrown away all of my treasured car magazines, all I have collected over the last 20 years ago, or so, which I haven't looked at for um, er, cough, cough, 20 years, blush, in some cases. Oh, it is a sad day.

But, you know, it is time to embrace electronic storage.

It's an expensive area, no doubt about that, and the standard of housing is very high, both old mixed and newer. The area is bounded Domain Road to the south, Punt Road to the east, the Yarra River to the north and Anderson Street and the Royal Botanic Gardens to the west. I took a a walk up Domain Road to Anderson Street, left and then right into Acland Street. I know one blogger on my list lives in the area.

This large block of only eight apartments stands dominantly on the corner.

It looks like it might not be such a cheap place buy into.
