Ubanto Friends

Our Brother Friends will readily admit how ignorant they are about computers. I know nothing, as they fling their respective palms upward into the air.

Their computer had a virus. I could not fix it. I told them to bury deep in files any questionable content they may have on their computer and take it to their local computer shop. A mutual acquaintance had a bad experience at one such place, who told him to never return to the shop because of the filth he had on his computer.

They bided their time with their computer only working in safe mode. Eventually the spied an ad in the gay press by someone who fixes computers for a set fee of $100, parts not included. It took two visits of five and three hours and their computer is not only fixed, it is now running on Linux Ubantu or whatever it is. They plied the repair person with coffee, cakes and kindness and he enjoyed their comfortable home and many of their saved pictures. While I found their new system ...

My experience is that you can't run from your problems. Moving away for a while though may be a good idea because it will give you some space and the chance to be yourself. I often tell people thinking about coming out, that if they are worried about how their family will react then they should wait until they have some independence. This is good because you will have the chance to build your own support network of friends and financial independence should things go badly. Whether or not you decide to tell them is up to you.

You never really know how people are going to react. I had an Uncle who I thought would be the most homophobic person in my family. He was in a biker gang etc. But he turned out to be the most tolerant person I ever met.

Good luck with the move and your family.

    Ask me anything
...

A couple of weekends ago I was in Sydney visiting friends. This weekend I'm in Canberra visiting my folks. I'll be visiting Perth later in the month for a conference. And am also planning trips to Hobart (for fun), Brisbane (for Valentino) and Adelaide (for fieldwork). Now I just need an excuse to visit Darwin.

This is an important step forward. If the Bill passes the Upper House, NSW will join ACT and WA in allowing full equality in adoption (and Tas in allowing step-parent adoption).

? Abandoned goods not at place of residence (Victoria)

Posted to <lj comm="lawquestions_au> also.
Back in April, a young couple moved in with me temporarily as emergency accommodation. At that time they filled the shed and part of the back yard of my daughters small unit in town (I live about 30 minutes away in a tiny town). At no stage have they lived at my daughters house, offered to pay for storage or any such arrangement, they just filled her small storage shed and put the overflow in the back yard 'temporarily'. They moved out of my place 3 months ago with no notice when I asked them to follow some simple rules (regarding keeping the kitchen clean, clearing their cat litter trays regularly and putting waste food in the bin not the fridge). I am still trying to get them to collect the rest of their stuff from here, but that's only a minor problem as I have a large property. My daughters place is a different and more urgent issue, especially as what is in the backyard is hazardous to her ...

You could argue that the world does not need beef to eat, in fact most meat. You could argue that the world does not need fish to eat, but I think it does. Yes, you could argue these points. What you cannot argue to me is that the world needs whale meat to eat, or specifically Japan.

But this is not particularly about the rights or wrongs of whale hunting. Pointless preaching to the already converted. This about the Tokyo Two, two Japanese Greenpeace activists. Yes Virginia, such people do exist.

Toru Suzuki and Junichi Sato are in a spot of bother. David McNeill from Japan Times tells what is happening to them. This was written back in 2008.

Six months ago Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki were ordinary men looking after young families. But in June they were arrested by a large group of uniformed police, taken to a detention center in Aomori Prefecture, northern Japan, and held for 26 days. They were granted bail on July 15 after paying &yen ...

Happy ever after

Boyfriends, they are like people, you know, they have feelings you have to take account of. Not thinking for one, now, hey? It's an adjustment, I'd forgotten. I guess Manny wasn't very demanding, in a lot of ways. Some may say, a joyous adjustment and I might agree in my lighter moments. Other times, I'm left thinking, do I really want this? But, I think that's healthy... let's leave "taking for granted" a long way down the track.

Once you are thinking about them, when they are not around, you know you are a gonna.

Santo's funny. I'm not really the type who believes in happy ever after. I suspect he might be? He just looks at me sometimes with some of the things I think. Like Shane's recent birthday when we halves in a present (my friends just buy small gifts, a token. Sebastian gave Shane a potato masher) and I decided that we should both buy a card. Two cards, one present.

It's why I ...

The bus driver

In contrast to most people, I don't mind bus drivers, especially the ones that take me between the train station and my work. The regulars always wait for me if they see me running towards the bus and yesterday I actually had a decent conversation with the driver on the way to the train station about, of all things, abstraction (the driver is also doing a Masters in Fine Art). So...Melbourne bus drivers are both learned and kind.

...... I deplore both Israel and Palestine as they are right now......... they are both a bunch of thugs......... but celebrating 4 innoicent deaths by handing out candy????..................
Four Israelis shot dead in West Bank Hamas attack

Four Israelis were killed in a shooting attack on a vehicle in the West Bank, two days before a new round of Mideast peace talks is scheduled to start in Washington.
The four were killed shortly in an "ambush" and the police and army were searching for the assailants, police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said in a telephone interview.
The Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message to reporters in the Gaza Strip.
...

Once upon a time

Once upon a time in a land far far too close to home, there was a young prince waiting for his Prince Charming. He occupied his days and nights doing things that made him happy but couldn’t help but think it would be nice to have someone hold his hand on the way to Grandma’s house and [...]

It's the monkey...

Two of my friend's have said recently they would take a drug to stop them from getting horny all the time, if such a drug existed. (funny, aren't the pharmaceutical companies trying to do the opposite?) They say it's annoying, a need, a want, an urge they could do without, each morning, or late at night.

"Hell, lunch time in the toilets," said G. "It's the monkey..."
"Every day," said S. "I get it over and done with when I first wake up. I have to."
S said he sometimes finds it a crushing urge.
G said he does it morning, noon and night. He once did it at the day time wedding of his best friend.

I remember when I was sixteen, it was every spare moment I got. Not a problem.

I was surprised when the two of them said it, within a couple of days each other. They were both serious.
G said it used to get in the way of other things he wanted to do. "Eye on the prize ...

Ballast Point

One wonderful feature of Sydney Harbour is the 'points'. It has so many jutting out into the harbour and many of them are parkland, although many are not and have houses built on them for the the lucky few.

Julie suggested I take a look at one such park, Ballast Point. I had no idea where it was or knew anything about it. Right, Birchgrove. The last time I looked at Birchgrove was to see Rowntree Street where the tram used to travel. The Birchgrove tram diverted off the more important Balmain line, that is more important if you did not want to go to Birchgrove. The Birchgrove tram was replaced by noisy smelly buses in 1954.

Hmmm, Ballast Point appears to be a construction site with googly satellite. Near Map has a recent photo, but the site still looks raw.

I better look elsewhere. Ah, the park only opened early this year, or officially last year. It was an industrial site. I suppose chunks ...

I’ve said many times on this blog that I’m not particularly fussed on lots of tattoos but these guys do them ever so well. For one thing, regardless of your sexuality, career status played an inordinate role in social situations. Meet someone new at a party and inevitably you would quickly be made to 'show yours' to the newby. 'Show your' public service grade, that is. Wobetide that your grade wasn't sufficiently high in which event the newby would start looking around the room for someone more 'useful' with whom to spend their time chatting.

And being gay meant other perils. It wasn&apos ...
